also we always say that ellie's just like him and we see that in pt. 2 where she decides to forgive him but it's too late. she can't do anything with that forgiveness except to stew in the shoulda-woulda-coulda that becomes her primary drive. they're both just vehicles of guilt and regret as much as they are of family and loyalty and at the end of the day she is still to late in deciding to end her vendetta—she returns home to find that she's alone. it's her greatest fear manifested and it happenes because of her own actions and inability to let go

the tragedy of joel's life being that he's always too late. he's too late to save sarah and she dies in his arms. he's too late to find tommy and tommy's moved on, he's grown, their family is changed. too late for henry and sam, just missed bill and frank before he could say goodbye. he is a constant spectator in people's lives and their deaths. by the time he accepts what ellie and all the others mean to him he's too late to protect them, too late to have helped her before she was so traumatized. he wakes up too late in the hospital to talk to her and the only thing he has left, the last resort of a man thrashing while he's drowning is to not let his fear paralyze him and stop him from saving another daughter. so he makes that choice, and then it's too late to take it back.

Before Sarah dies the colors are a lot warmer, a lot “kinder”, almost

But when she dies, and it transitions to present day, the colors get colder. More stark.

But Ellie’s colors are warm

And you see that contrast…

sorry but I am officially a joel miller apologist. the fireflies knock him out & as soon as he regains consciousness marlene breaks the news to him that ‘yah sorry you’re never going to see your daughter again bc the surgery is lethal. but here’s her knife as a keep sake <3′ i’m sorry marlene but u thought that was going to go over well? you thought the insanely dangerous and firearm proficient man was who obviously bonded to ellie was going to go calmly? she should have sent ten men to escort him out. thirty. she should have just shot him in the head while he was unconscious. but of course she underestimated how much he cared. what he would do for ellie. bc she knew mean gruff self serving survivalist joel not father joel. she didn’t even let joel and ellie say goodbye to each other. was planning on killing ellie without even telling her for an experimental procedure they had no proof would work. didn’t even give joel the option to see her one last time. “would u kill 1 person to save 100?” they didn’t even allow a fourteen year old the agency to answer that question. team joel
