i really quite like the relationship between vertin & argus

it's nice seeing vertin interact with someone who she doesn't feel the need to be the timekeeper for or knew when she was younger, and it's nice seeing how argus slowly goes from bossing her around to following her command thru trust

i love the parental relationships vertin has with many of adults but it is nice seeing one where it doesn't have that type of dependency

hear me out, svsss extras au where, some part after canon, when the original luo binghe shows up, shen qingqiu does go with him (whether forcefully or willingly) to the other world. of course, bingge being bingge he immediately starts planning a wedding and trying to take shen qingqiu to bed, but his spouse-to-be isn't having it. he has this thing called self-respect, you know!

so, shen qingqiu, trying to buy himself time, tells bingge he'll need to be properly courted first. after all, how can you marry a guy you just met? (frozen ref). bingge, though reluctantly, agrees.

and generally in my head it's a bit of a feel-good fic, in a way? at least before the angst begins. shen qingqiu is sweet and kind to bingge but strict and aloof enough to not be a different person entirely, and when shen qingqiu (teasingly) tells him to perform the qing jing sword drills, bingge blooms under the praise he's given when he performs them flawlessly, and there is something very calming about walking into shen qingqiu's suite and finding him curled up on the cushioned window sill with a blanket, a cup of tea and a book he's helplessly engrossed in.

in this au shen jiu is still alive, locked in the dungeons of the demon realm castle. with the new shen qingqiu here he's been severely neglected, mainly because bingge hates to taint his new image of 'the kind shizun' with his hateful despicable old shizun, clearly this is how it was always meant to be, and shen jiu can rot for all he cares. at first shen qingqiu (yuan) thinks shen jiu must be long dead and gone, but then he overhears two guard demons bickering about "food for the prisoner", and he gets curious.

it's a scene à la 'belle and the beast' where shen qingqiu goes to the forbidden wing dungeon, finding shen qingqiu chained up, bones broken, cultivation crippled. one of his arms is gone, and shen qingqiu doesn't want to look too long at the rotten remains in the corner of the cell. shen jiu is barely conscious at this point, but shen qingqiu spends a little time with him anyway.

when he has dinner with bingge later that night, he asks after shen jiu, saying he wants to see him. binghe gets a little paranoid, worried about them teaming up against him or that this shen qingqiu will think he's a monster too. but shen qingqiu knows to spin it in such a way that it basically amounts to "wouldn't it be great to have two nice shizuns?" (shen yuan knows how important closure can be). and. yeah. bingge does like the idea of two nice shizuns.

so then shen qingqiu gets to take care of shen jiu (who does have to remain in the dungeons for now), and if bingge hadn't seen it with his own eyes he wouldn't have believed shen jiu took to shen qingqiu so quickly, being the pitiful pile of broken bones, starvation and torture trauma that he is, but, clearly, the way he allows shen qingqiu to touch him, stroke his hair, how his face falls, just slightly, when shen qingqiu has to leave, he's getting attached. something in bingge's xin-mo influenced mind delights in the idea of something else he can take away from his old shizun (shen yuan won't let him).

there's a bunch of endings to this, whether shen qingqiu and bingge find love and get married, or maybe binghe comes to save his shizun and they take shen jiu back to their world, or shen qingqiu acts like a catalist between original binghe and original shen qingqiu for them to be together, or idk maybe everyone goes to the other (svsss) world and they become some insane quartet, take your pick!

honestly i don't think sqq (jiu) would have minded the accusations of preferential treatment from yqy if they'd felt true. like as children he guarded the title of being yue qi's Favorite with teeth and claws. why shouldn't he be given preferential treatment? everyone ought to know just who qi-ge likes and trusts over everyone else. and for good fucking reason--who else here is watching out for qi-ge? as peak lords he's literally 2nd in command and chief tactician, if yqy values his word over yours, then its both what makes most sense and also what he deserves.

the thing is that to sqq, being accused of being favoured by yqy over others now just feels like a sick joke, because obviously (to him) that's not the fucking case. if he actually gave him preferential treatment you'd think he'd listen to what he has to fucking say, instead of believing what anyone else tells him about sqq. you'd think, if he was yqy's favorite, he wouldn't have left him to rot.

so i think, in a setting where they reconcile after becoming peak lords, that sqq would very much slap yqy's love for him in everyones faces as a kind of power move. a kind of, "oh, you thought that was favouritism? you havent seen yet what it looks like when qi-ge lets himself favour someone."

btw this post kinda made me think about how, as both a JGY and SJ fan, i see both of them get similar yet opposite treatment from certain parts of their fanbases.

like JGY consistently gets interpreted to be much more of a prickly asshole and a ruthless murderer than he actually is, while SJ is often toned down into a Tough (but secretly caring) Teacher archetype with full disregard for his canonical blatant and cruel abuse of children (well, one specific child as far as we know, but he's a quality over quantity man for sure).

like maybe some JGY stans would benefit from switching to full-time SJ apologism instead of trying to mold their polite little customer service smile blorbo into an angry feral kitten with abandonment issues. and vice versa.

Mxtx was so sexy for having shen qingqiu experience the shen jiu flashbacks and still deciding to dislike him. Don't get me wrong I eat up all those awesome fanfics and headcannons of them having some sort of positive relationship like it's breadsticks, but sy!shen qingqiu's canon perception of shen jiu is just so juicy!

Like, you die, you die cursing and screaming some trashfire novel but wake up in your least favorite character's body. But he's not a character anymore, you eventually find out and accept that you and everyone around you is real. This body is real and so was the person who had it before. This body was theirs but now its yours. This body has done real horrendous things to real people that you care about. Some omnipotent system inside you is encouraging and coercing you into doing similar horrendous acts this body would have done, what it used to do. This body is not yours but now it is and now you have to live with it knowing you have to act out this body's role. Hurt your loved ones, distance yourself from your comrades, die a painful death. That is what this body was meant for, this was the original owner's fate, live with it. You are now one of the only people in the whole world that intimately knows how that man was the way he was and why he did the things he did. But that does not make it better, you feel pity, some sort of regret for how things could have been, but you cant forgive and forget because you hate him. You hate the character who turned out to be a man. You hate the man that used to own this body. You hate this body that's yours but not really yours. You hate your role, this narrative, this world, your future circumstances. Your actions of self preservation that have caused great harm. And ultimately, you hate yourself.

I know jiu is a bit complicated and hard to know, but I was actually hoping for him to have at least a few slightly positive relationships with the other kids even if he doesn't allow himself to open up fully. I think jiu and yumi could be really good acquaintances? they're similar in a lot of ways (especially the repression and just playing along to whatever other people want for you, being their perfect pet/dress-up doll) and are both quite reserved, so I think their interactions would be rather harmonious even if not very substantial. jiu could also be quite amiable with yumi's girlfriend asahi! I think he'd view them in a very coworker-like manner, always at an arm's length distance but holds respect to them and trusts their capabilities more than some other people.

I'd like to know what yumi thinks of jiu, if that's okay? I love thinking about the best buddies ever kio and asuka, but I also thought it'd be nice if jiu had another person in the garden he could associate with from time to time (for the rare and brief moments he allows himself to be in someone's company).

I actually really love the idea of Jiu and Yumi having a cordial, amiable relationship, even if they're not exactly friends. They are quite similar, as you said with the reserved personalities and the dress-up doll, people pleaser personalities (even if they might not want to act this way) but also I do think they have another thing in common, that they compare themselves to other people a lot, to their own detriments. Jiu seems like he compares himself to others, especially Kio, and it usually has a negative impact on him, tbh. Anyways, basically, yes that would be so awesome!! Jiu definitely deserves to have people he can hang around at the garden who don't actively bother him or somehow irritate him in another way haha

YUMI -> JIU

Yumi finds Jiu to be a refreshing presence at the garden, if only because she doesn't have to put on her saccharine, perfect persona around him. He's quiet and he doesn't expect her to perform a certain way, as long as she's not being obnoxious (which is a very rare occurrence), she can sit with him and just be in the presence of another person without it needing to be confusing or overwhelming. She doesn't feel the need to prove herself around him, for some reason, but she's not exactly about to look that gift horse in the mouth and question it. He's a quiet retreat when her other friends get too loud or too boisterous, and besides, no one ever thinks to look for her with him.

Jiu never treats her like a child or assumes that she is one, despite her appearance and her size. He never demands a performance from her or even asks her to talk. Jiu is the only person Yumi is physically able to cry around.

Currently fucked up considering that the central point around which 79's agonies are built—yq's promise to come back when he was stronger and save sj—is a child's fantasy. Because even if he had come back? What could he do? Sj was considered qjl's property, it was legally within his rights to do whatever he wanted with him. He had money, now, but qjl would never have given up sj. Being a cultivator wouldn't have put yqy above the law, and exerting his newly-acquired strength to save sj by force would have only earned him a warrant.

Yue Qi becoming a cultivator wasnt some magical cure to everything. There would still be work and planning necessary in order to get him out of there without huge consequnces. And the thing is, I think sqq understands this. I think he understood this when he burnt down the qiu estate, perhaps even long before that. He probably considered plans for it—what to do once Yue Qi came back. But even when he understood, he waited, because the important partof their promise wasnt who precisely did the saving, it was that Yue Qi would come back for him, that Yue Qi cared about him, even if he found a better life for himself

Yue Qingyuan, i think, doesnt understand this at all. I think he really believes if he was just a little faster, if hed just gotten there sooner, if he hadnt been trapped in the caves, if he hadnt messed everything up, then he would have been able to show up in time to whisk sj away. The sentiment of the promise isnt so important to him—of course he loves sj, he always has put him first in all things, it goes without saying bc every single thing he does and says is an "i love you"—to him, the part of the promise that sat most heavily was the responsibilty. Its not enough to come back without strength, its not enough just to care—he had to save sj, and he failed.

Had sqq known he'd tried, he'd surely have viewed his failure as an inevitability, and it wouldnt have bothered him at all. To yqy, his failure is crushing. It is the basis around which every pathetic facet of his personality will be built for the rest of his life.
