Trauma in Solo leveling

Always haunted by what could have been of Solo Leveling if the narrative acknowledged the inherent trauma vision that guides most of Jin-Woo's actions through the series instead of glorifying him for that.

Like, it is pretty clear to me from the start that a lot of his obsession with self reliance and his increasingly cynical views of the world ("The weak are destined to be betrayed") are a direct response to the double dungeon incident, and in more ways than we initially realize.

I think it's particularly obvious in the way he is paralled with Lee Joohee; while they're both shown to be traumatized from their encounter, Joohee is supposedly 'worse off' than him. She has noticeable flashbacks to that episode and withdraws from life and work in an attempt to avoid possible triggers - becoming paralysed when she fails to do so. And because, while also afraid, Jin-Woo is instead making a point to return to dungeons we are very clearly meant to think that he is moving on when she is not. ...Except that he isn't.

Because, you see, along with withdrawing, the reenactment of a traumatic event is also a very common response to trauma. And so is the risky behaviour that might come with it. And what does Jin-Woo does as soon as he's able to leave the hospital again? Immediately throw himself into dungeons, alone, with a clear disregard for personal safety and an extreme need to both prove himself and give meaning to his near death experience before.

Not only does he goes right back into the very same place his trauma took place, but he seems to subconsciously be trying to recreate said event in a way that gives him control of the situation. This time, he wasn't abandoned to die alone in a dungeon: he did it himself, willingly. He placed himself in that position. And later on, when he risks himself with shady parties he expects to betray him, he seems almost content; once again putting himself in risk by creating a scenario where he is 'abandoned' and 'betrayed' but where he can come off on top. He is desperate to both have his belief confirmed that someone perceived as a weak hunter like he is will always be betrayed, always be left behind, and to fight that supposed fate. To prove that he has 'fixed' this aspect of himself and will thus not fall victim to that consequences of that abandoment again. In fact, he is so detatched from the current scene that he deliberately ignores the fact Yoo Jinho challenges those believes by protecting Jin-Woo, whom he believes to be an E rank at that point.

And were this any other story, all his development from then on would prove the faults of this mindset. The dangers of self reliance, of cutting yourself off from any support network, from depriving himself of any sort of meaningful trust or vulnerability with others. But instead, we're meant to respect the fact he is increasingly isolated from everyone else. That he becomes cold, emotionally withdrawn and paranoid (his refusal to join any of the existing guilds always felt to me like his need for control taken to extreme, plus the fact he could not deal with how exposed he felt working with others again). And I think that's really sad.

It would have been really interesting to have a story that is willing to challenge the notion that he is better off alone, and that trust in others is ultimately unecessary. And that would acknowledged the strength necessary to allow himself to trust and be vulnerable after everything - and the importance of surrounding himself with people he loves and knows will protect him too. Sad 😔

Solo Leveling Episode 10 Thoughts

This episode was wonderful! Spoilery thoughts for the anime, novel, and manhwa below:

The scene with Lee Joohee is really well handled, and so sad, especially with the extra anime info about how terrible her mother is... I feel really bad for her in a whole new way. She goes back to them in the manhwa as well (and I think in the novel, it's been a while), but since we didn't know about her family, it wasn't as bad, and felt like a needed break. This way... goodness, this is all kinds of sad.

I still think Joohee was massively underused as a character. I'm not sure if Chugong just decided she wasn't going to be the endgame love interest or what and just moved her out because of that, but the way her whole arc is handled is quite strange, other than maybe like... showing how damaging the dungeon system is in regard to PTSD. Which is a valuable story to tell, it'd be weird if no one else was broken this way (though Min Byunggu and clearly Choi Jongin have this, and Jinwoo and Sung Jinah deal with it to some extent), but Joohee just... she's not handled well at all. The story has things to say about ableism and how mental health is treated in our society. It's just kind of confusing at times.

Han Songyi, you are a child lol I love her still, but she is a child. Acting very much like a high schooler, though, thinking she can take on anything and adults always underestimate her.

I still really love this idea that they do this in a way to help out people who can't raid on their own/would have a hard time joining raids, especially the injured guy. Makes me think of poor Han Yoojin in S-Classes That I Raised, pre-regression...

The White Tiger recruitment team arrives lol I was wondering if they'd get cut for some reason, given Woo Jinchul is taking up even more time in the anime than he did in the manhwa, and he absorbed a lot of their presence in the manhwa. But nope! Welcome, anime versions of Ahn Sangmin and Hyun Kichul!

Ah yes, we also get an incredibly unnecessary random female passerby ass shot like her skirt has been absorbed by her butt. Lest we forget this adaptation is an action-adventure series probably targeted at the shounen market made in Japan. As I recall, in the webnovel, Kichul does get busy chatting up women at some point (I thought it happened during this scene, but I can't find it looking back, so maybe my memory is just messy with how bad the novel overall is with women a lot of the time).

Sangmin just opening his mouth to a strange hunter aldkjaldja This whole continuing aspect of the story is still so ridiculous alkdjlaj I don't recall it being explained in the manhwa, but in the novel, Jinwoo discovers that he can't give potions he buys to other people to use. They literally disappear. But other people can take them. They just can't hold the bottles. So he has to feed it to them himself, and they can't see the bottles when he doesn't lol He also doesn't want people to see him pulling stuff out of his inventory cause inventory isn't a thing other Hunters have here.

I still love Jinwoo getting one over the stalkers, ahem, scouts. He's so creative, love him. Make the scouts second-guess crossing you :3

'The police station next to the fire station' Kim Rae-won and Son Ho-joon are in danger while chasing a serial arson case.

In the 12th episode (final episode) of the SBS Friday/Saturday drama 'The Police Station Next to the Fire Station', which aired on the 30th, Jin Ho-gae (Kim Rae-won) and Bong Do-jin (Son Ho-joon) suffered an explosion accident.

On this day, Bong Do-jin found something suspicious at the scene of the three accidents, and said, "Has there been any witnesses who saw strange patterns during the fire at Dochun Villa and the septic tank? I saw something strange. I saw the same star pattern during the fire at Dochun Villa and the septic tank." he confessed.

Bong Do-jin was worried, saying, "This doesn't feel right. If one person set fires serially," Gong Myung-pil (Kang Ki-dung) said, "Isn't it over? It's not a serial murder, where is the signature of arson?" did

Dok Go-soon (Woo Mi-hwa) also dissuaded him, saying, "Yes, Do-jin might have misunderstood you," and Bong Do-jin said, "The fire at Dochun Villa is at 10 am, the hot dog truck at 1 pm, and the septic tank explosion at 4 pm. The fire broke out every three hours," he said.

Song Seol (Gong Seung-yeon) said, “If the fire today is a series of arson fires that occurred every three hours, as the senior said, the next fire could happen three hours later. There is no left," he said, and there was no accident even after 7 o'clock.

Bong Do-jin thought it was a serial arson incident until the end, and went to visit Jinho-gae, who had disappeared after submitting a letter of resignation. Jin Ho-gae finally joined hands with Bong Do-jin to investigate the fire accident.

In particular, Bong Do-jin and Jinho-gae found the scene where the arson failed through the body of a stray cat. Song Xue was delighted that Jin Hao Gai had returned, and handed over his police service card. Jin Ho-gae sincerely said, "I'm glad you were by my side when my heart stopped."

244/Jinho Lee as a dad

After putting it off, I finally caught up with Viral Hit on Webtoons. I’m someone who loves reading headcanons/scenarios about my favorite series and just people’s thoughts in general. A popular headcanon across many fandoms seem to be “how would x be as a dad,” and I’ve given it some thought. 

There are many lovely headcanons about father 244 on here, but I have a different idea of how he would be, so here we go! This will be single dad 244. Possible mild spoilers!

I can’t imagine him being married, which is why I’m going the single father route. I can see him having a child due to an accidental slip-up. He’d either be a single father because the mother is deceased or because they aren’t together, but let's go the deceased route. Sorry, mom.

According to the wiki, he is older than 25, but I can’t imagine him being older than 33. Let’s put him around 28 for our scenario. For scenario/headcanon purposes let's say that he has a 5 year old daughter .

Onto the good stuff, I don’t think 244 would be a good dad. I believe that he would be emotionally unavailable. He himself and other characters who know him as Jinho acknowledge that he is heartless and lacks proper emotions. He doesn’t view people as people and admittedly feels empty. I personally think that he is possibly a psychopath. Whatever love he would have for his child would be shallow and more like the love one would have for a belonging or tool than a person.  

He wouldn’t be physically affectionate unless he had something to gain from it. I can see him only being affectionate to look good in front of others or to manipulate his child into doing something because he knows that humans crave affection. 

He would provide well financially. We can see that he is pretty wealthy. I think that his daughter would live in a nice neighborhood, go to the best schools, have the best toys, and she'd receive a hefty allowance once she entered middle school. Now, I don't think that he'd send his child to the best schools just because, she'd definitely have to eventually do something in return such as making sure to brush shoulders with the children of powerful men, only so he can use them to expand himself and go even higher. Not at 5 but she'll have to be prepared for it later on.

Part of me thinks that he'd raise her as a useful tool but another part of me thinks that she would have a somewhat normal but detached upbringing.

Another thing, I don’t think that he’d would ACTUALLY raise his own child. I think that for the most part his child would be raised by a nanny.  They'd live in the same house but he seems to be a busy man so I imagine that he'd be away on "business" trips pretty often. I'd say that he'd spend half of his time at home and the other half out.

I could see him checking in on her progress and status through the nanny though. I don't think he would go out of his way to take her out or spend time with her unless he needed her for something or she requested it. Perhaps he'd do it every once in a while on a whim.

Now I don't think he'd be a complete asshole to his own child. He wouldn't be mean but he wouldn't go out of his way to be loving. Like he would let his child hug him but he wouldn't go out of his way to hug his own child. He also wouldn't be the type to randomly tell his child he loves her, I don't think he'd actually say it in general, unless once again, he had something to gain. He'd be a distant father.

His child wouldn't have the best upbringing honestly, but it wouldn't be the worst. She would be well fed, have a warm bed, nice toys, and warm clothes, but she would have a distant father. I can imagine her having a loving nanny who continually tries to (wrongfully) tell her that 244 loves her very much.

How he behaves as a father could go multiple ways. He could be a "normal" yet distant father, constantly on business trips, not really affectionate, always throwing money towards his child, but he never actually does anything bad. He's not the most loving dad but he wouldn't full on treat his daughter terribly.

He could also just go full bad father route. Extremely manipulative(more so than usual) and essentially raises his child solely as a tool to help further himself.

He'd possibly be a mixture of the two. Sometimes manipulative and occasionally uses his daughter as a tool if the situation calls. But he wouldn't go out of his way to specifically raise her as a tool and constantly use her as one.

maybe it's just me, but I think Hobin as a protagonist is weak?? At the beginning he was this pathetic but likeable guy that you couldn't help but root for, but his character development always seemed kind of limited to just him gaining confidence in fighting and being a leader(kinda) and nothing too deep. His main goal went all over the place; one chapter he wanted to be rich, the other he wanted a gf, some other time he wanted to be famous, and sometimes it's not even clear what he wants. I think the fragment of his backstory was interesting, but it's a shame it was used as more of a love story told from Bomi's romanticized pov than an opportunity to flesh out Hobin's character more or give something more to it. It's so funny that his 15 year old self seems way more interesting than him at 18,,

I guess he's more realistic that way but it's eh

With the final fight arc, everything happened so suddenly and Hobin's character changed drastically with the blink of an eye. The author could've made these changes such as Hobin's body gradually rather than just, you know, keeping Hobin stick skinny even after all his training for 120 chapters and then slapping some lazily drawn muscle lines on his body to create the illusion of him being ripped. I also don't really understand Hobin's change of heart, risking him and his friend's lives to fight for "justice" because he thinks that bad guys should be punished. Hell, even Seongjoon's girlfriend had a more understandable reason even though she was horrendously written.

Even in the last fights, it felt like he was just there, the development felt really artificial and I lost all interest in him as a character. I think all the characters we were supposed to root for had a weak presence, just as much as the bad guys did. The author randomly introduced the story of Seongjoon and Jinho into a story about YouTubers, which is kinda silly. The primary YouTube kids plot waters down the dark atmosphere that the Seongjoon/Jinho parts are supposed to have, while it feels like the gangster/yakuza subplot just don't fit here and they would be better off as separate series. Maybe if this was a story about gangs it would fit, but imo the two antagonists make the main characters look like a joke.

I agree. I think, early on, Hobin was a fantastic protagonist. I have a fondness for a MC who can openly be like "Look, man, I just want money and attention and IDGAF how dirty I have to play to get it." His growth to being more mature (e.g. deleting the Jiu Jitsu guy's channel instead of profiting off it), and wanting to protect his friends, felt genuine and well written.

And then there's been the last third of the story, and that all kinda stumbled and fell on its face. Which can be said for most of the comic at this point, honestly.

Like, as someone who's written, uhhh, ~4 standard length novels worth of fanfic and origfic, I understand: Endings are HARD. It's tough to both get in all the things you want to happen while also trying to wrap things up neatly. But hoo boy has the story as a whole not been doing too hot since Seongjun’s death. I think he cursed the creators to get revenge for killing him off.

Yeah he’s definitely a sweetheart I mean look at him 🥺 he’s a sub and wants to be babied by you but doesn’t mind if you like it the other way around. Because, he just wants you to be happy. He would be that yandere type of the group that would most likely stalk. He feels guilty doing it but at first it’s “ harmless “ like following you home to see where you lived. Looking at you for a little bit through your window. Then it just got worse, and he couldn’t stop. He almost failed school because he’d sit there until you went to bed and still didn’t want to leave after that. He just loved everything about you and couldn’t take his eyes off you for even a second.

Shinwon

Yandere type: overprotective

He’s insecure and anxious all the time. Being with him, and well for him as well would be stressful 24/7. He doesn’t like you going out, at all, he doesn’t like you even going to the bathroom alone. And it’s not like with Wooseok (sorry spoiler) in a clingy way. It’s more of a you can get hurt, burning yourself on hot water, slipping, god knows what. And he’s constantly worried because you’re the most precious thing in his life.

He’s clingy but not very toxic. MUSICAL ACTING WORKSHOPS & AUDITION

aecha shifts the conversation a bit as she brings up an opportunity that she had told the actors about, “for some of you that are interested in musical acting, we’ve received information from the acting department that there is a musical audition that is about to happen in a couple of weeks. it is optional for all of you to partake in it, but we highly recommend it for a lot of you who are planning to focus more on the acting side.” 

starting from now until JUNE 4, the models are invited to attend the musical acting workshops. it’s highly recommended for the people who aren’t in the NOTORIETY TIERS GROUP to participate in it due to the rewards that one might get if they do the requirements along with passing the auditions. as for the ones in the NOTORIETY TIERS GROUP ( JINSEO, SANGHYUN, YUMI ) it is optional to skip out on this event if they choose to do so. if you choose to partake in this event, you will not be able to redeem the NOTORIETY TIERS next time ( JUNE ). on the other hand, if you choose to skip out on this opportunity, you can still do the NOTORIETY TIERS. in the end, it’s up to you which one you prefer!

then from JUNE 6 to JULY 2, all of the actors ( and models, if they choose to participate ) will be scheduled a date and arrive at the CHARLOTTE THEATER. there will be several other people joining to audition as well, mostly actors from various ( npc ) mid-tier companies. 

their audition will be split into two parts. during the first part, the participant will have to sing an excerpt of the song ( approximately 2 minutes ). the participant can pick any song they wish as long as it showcases their vocals, so it doesn’t have to be from a musical ( but it is recommended ). if you choose a song that isn’t from a musical, it has to be a song that was released before JANUARY 2020. soon after, they will be requested to do a short dance segment to see the person’s dance abilities. for the second part of the audition, rather than giving a reading from the show, one of the people from the casting panel will give the participant a scenario and they must improvise the rest of the scene for ten minutes until they are told to stop ( for this task, we’re giving you three choices so pick one ). 

SCENARIO A: your friend follows you to go somewhere and after spending thirty minutes walking around, your friend says, “admit it; you have no idea where you’re going, do you?”

SCENARIO B: you and your friend reunite at a party. it’s been years since you’ve seen each other. your friend tells you, “don’t look at me like you’re sorry. you’re not sorry.”

SCENARIO C: you receive a phone call and it’s from your friend. the first thing your friend asks is, “when will you come back home?”

results for the auditions will be given at a much later time! as for the possible types of roles available and the requirements, we have listed some below:

MAIN ROLE: must have prior experience in being in a musical ( this applies to any musicals they may have joined from the notoriety tiers, legally blonde, AND/OR dream high musical regardless of what their role was ). you must have a minimum of 100 ACTING, 100 PERFORMANCE, 100 DANCING, and 125 SINGING.

SUPPORTING ROLE: you must have a minimum of 50 ACTING, 50 PERFORMANCE, 50 DANCING, and 75 SINGING.

ENSEMBLE: you must have a minimum of 25 ACTING, 50 PERFORMANCE, 50 SINGING or DANCING.

STAGE NAMES

for completing one term, JISOO, TAIYOU, AHYEON, and JIYEON have the option to suggest a stage name! you will have the option to submit THREE POSSIBLE OPTIONS ( alternate spellings and capitalization of the letters are allowed ) from which the company will ultimately choose one as your official stage name. out of character, the admin team will make that choice out of the provided options. it should go without saying that any stage name suggestions have to be appropriate for a general audience, both in korea and internationally.

How have you been? I hope you are well! Training is going well, although I wish I was learning dances rather than learning how to fight. I miss home, every part of it. With each passing second, I’m that much closer to returning home. Writing letters never came easy to me, but when I write to you all of that slips away. It’s like my brain has infinite ideas, unlike when I send letters to others. When I write to them, I run out of words past ‘How have you been?’ ‘How’s family?’. But when I write to you, I write run-on sentences wanting to get my thoughts out as quickly as possible. Thank you for being there for me through this all.

After we each find our seats, I’m between Hyunggu and Jinho as we celebrate his return. My mind goes back to our letters, how at the end of the last one I wrote, ‘Love, (Y/n)’. And his reply he sent me before he came back said, ‘P.S. I have a secret to tell you when I come home’. I wonder what his secret is as I eat my cake.
