Will Roland's speaking voice as Jeremy <3

I literally love Will Roland's portrayal of Jeremy and one of the reasons I love it so much is his voice. And I don't just mean his singing voice, in this case ,(though I really do love that <3) but more his way of speech. I love his over-articulation, his problems with volume control, him talking too fast, and all that mumbo jumbo makes me so happy- Cuz' I always worry that I'm being "too much" or "too weird" with how I talk sometimes cuz' of my ADHD but seeing Jeremy like that makes me feel not alone! It's real' touchin'. ALSO- HAPPY DISABILITY PRIDE MONTH- I know the month is almost over but I want to keep bringing it up till' the end of July hehe

Jeremy and Christine both have extended time for tests and because of this they have to be put in a separate room for tests like the SATs and stuff so Jeremy HAS tried to talk to Christine before during like. The breaks or before or after tests but always pussies out.

WAIT FREDDY what is BMC? it interested me wheni saw you reblogging post about it, and i thought it was a show, but it's a book? and if you like it, it's obviously good, but would you recommend it? i want to get new interests anyways lol

Okay so basically bmc stands for be more chill and it's a musical (adapted from a book, but they have very different plots) that's basically sci-fi and coming-of-age!!! The songs are all VERY catchy and the musical's been around since 2015 so there's a lot of fan content out there for it ^^ (and the book's been out since 2004 I believe?)

So the plot follows our main character Jeremy Heere who's an (autistic coded) social-outcast who's only friend is his childhood best friend Michael Mell =D (I'm gonna try to give a brief summary here =^=) A very famous scene that happens in the first song is when one of Jeremy's bullies writes something on his backpack, which we find out was "boyf." And later, which Jeremy and Michael are talking, the two of them put their backpacks together and read that it says "boyf riends." (Also, in the broadway revival, they added a line where Michael says "my mother's would be thrilled!!" Confirming a popular headcanon back in the older fandom to be canon. Anyways, in the opening number, Jeremy is seen getting shoved around, called gross, and, on a more positive note, is convinced (by Michael) to join the school play. Jeremy wanted to sign up for the play initially because he has a crush on this theater kid named Christine Canigula, but is too nervous to ask her out (so he would have to if he was working with her, and he wouldn't be seen as a creep. Christine sings a song abt how much she loves play rehearsal (she also canonically has ADHD >u<) and bu the end of the song all of the popular kids (who were previously seen bullying Jeremy) are revealed to have also joined the play. Jake, a popular kid, talks to Christine and blah blah blah Christine then shows an interest in Jake. Jeremy then goes into the bathroom to wash off the writing on his backpack, but gets caught by the guy who wrote it: Rich Goranski. They talk for a bit, then Rich starts having (what seems to be) a seizure, before quickly calling out to Jeremy to stay. Then he explains how he became popular so quickly in the span of a year. He took this pill called a super-quantum unit intel processor, SQUIP for short. Basically, a SQUIP is a super computer that goes into your brain and "tells you what to do." In Rich's case, it made him cool. Rich tells Jeremy that he can hook him up with one, for 600 dollars. Jeremy is immediately interested, because, as previously established, Jeremy hates being a loser. He then talks to Michael abt it when he gets home. Michael is convinced that it's a scam, but Jeremy insists that they should at least go check it out. So, they go to the mall and end up buying one SQUIP. Jeremy takes it, and nothing happens immediately. But, after a little while, Jeremy starts having that seizure-like reaction that Rich had in the bathroom...in the middle of the mall. IN FRONT OF CHRISTINE. Then, the squip activates and immediately starts telling Jeremy what to do. Blah blah blah stuff happens the musical almost ends in an apocalypse it's really cool actually ^^ (also srry for how long this is ;-; I really like giving this spiel)

And then the book has a sort-of-similar idea, except the endings and actual events are VERY different. But!!!!! I personally really like the book, and think it's definitely a good read.

K so bmc has a few different productions out there (including a LOT of high-school productions available on YouTube [and a bunch of other bootlegs also available on youtube])

Currently, there is only a 30 minute long visual bootleg for the original two river theater regional production, but there is a full length audio bootleg (and I know that one of these [I can't remember which] is currently unlisted, so if you happen to want to watch/listen to this musical AND want to enjoy the original production, then just dm me and I can send u the link ^^)

There are also a few off-broadway bootlegs (with mostly the original cast), but there are DEFINITELY the most broadway bootlegs (and, I can't also send u the link to the [in my opinion] best one)

And then little warning there are some explicit themes and a character get sexually assaulted in one scene so don't watch it if either of those are triggering for u ^^

Aaaaaaaand then the book has a LOT of explicit material in it. I Definitely don't recommend it if ur sensitive to that stuff.

(Also, don't feel pressured to watch/listen/read it just cuz I like it =p both musicals AND be more chill are kinda an acquired taste lol)

Christine - Filipino - Everyone thinks she only listens to autistic people music, but she also listens to riot grrrl and hardcore - Actually pretty confident in her body (One that is chubby, if you draw her as a skinny woman I will bring woe upon your house and famine upon your fields). But very socially unconfident. - Transfemme, found out in 7th grade, socially transitioned and started puberty blockers in 8th grade, started hormones a year before the musical. - Had a crush on Jeremy since ILPR, was going to confess in GTIKBI, but got cold feet. - Actually a pretty devout liberation theology Catholic. - Decently fluent in Tagalog - Demisexual - Tumblr user (affectionate) - Post-canon starts learning Yiddish to be more connected to Jeremy's culture, ends up being more fluent than he is

Jeremy - Half Ashkenazi (Mom's side), half General American Mutt (Dad's side) - Deeply ashamed of himself for not being more devout or not speaking better Yiddish as well as imagining a future and family with a Goyische woman. - Tries to keep to Kosher - Actually only listens to autistic people music, but also some klezmer, specifically Daniel Kahn and The Painted Bird - Redditor (Derogatory) - Transmasc, found out in 8th grade, came out in 9th, puberty blockers in 10th, hasn't started HRT but is considering. - Went through an embarrassing reactionary phase - Bisexual - Autistic - Secretly he's kinda girly - No one at school except Michael knows that he's Jewish. - Gets a tumblr account post-canon due to pressure from Christine and Michael, ends up really enjoying it - Tries to learn Tagalog but is horrible at it. Obligatory disclaimer that I'm not as much into bmc as I was anymore, but I still feel like answering you sooooo

First off, I'm not saying any character IS definitely autistic, it's not my place to say that, I'm just saying they could be read as autistic!! Just wanted to clear that up, but yes I do think Michael could be autistic

As for characters I think are neurodivergent, Christine canonically has ADD (Inattentive ADHD) so that's a definitive one! I also do think Rich is neurodivergent in some way, but I don't remember enough about him to tell specifically how rn. Also JENNA!! I feel like people forget her a lot, I feel like she definitely reads as neurodivergent in some way, more specifically the kind that masks a lot. Jake is very neurodivergent coded too I feel, and so is Brooke. Chloe goes without saying I think! I don't see anyone talking about this but MR. HEERE SEEMS VERY MUCH NEURODIVERGENT CODED TO ME. Like not only because his son is autistic/neurodivergent, he just feels like an autistic dad who's struggling with the consequences of his wife leaving him and the changes that brings, which makes him quite depressed and unmotivated to do anything like we see in the show. Him not being able to put his pants on reads as like executive dysfunction made worse by all the changes his life is going through to me, I would love to hear anyone's thoughts on this :)

In conclusion, almost all if not all BMC characters are neurodivergent in some way hshs (at least to me)

BMC Fic Recs!

i have enough time, boredom, and underrated fics in my bookmarks to put this together, so here you go! none of these fics are the ones on every rec list with hundreds of kudoses and comments, so maybe leave some if you read?

give it time and you’ll be fine - burnsides (6830 words)

including one of my favorite ever christine characterizations, a realistic portrayal of her adhd and weirdness without making her silly and stupid for the sake of it and without infantilizing her. the author’s michael characterization is also excellent, striking the balance between the fact that he’s happy with himself overall and the fact that he gets anxious and has breakdowns, without straying too far in either direction. their friendship is treated well too; usually it’s a “they don’t get along” or “they’re best friends immediately”, but this takes them from point a to point b smoothly and realistically.

post-canon squip squad interaction fic. the characterizations of literally every single character are so on point, it literally feels like it’s been pulled straight from canon with their tics, dialogue, thoughts - the whole works. the language and metaphors are so pretty too, and we deal with the fact that they’re not all gonna be friends immediately, even if they try, and the aftermath of the squip syncing them all up and the connection formed there.

bet you’ve got a bone to pick with me - memorytheservant (13975 words)

set in the october of their senior year, we get to see how much jeremy and the rest of the squad have moved on from the whole squipcident. i’m literally in love with the characterizations in this fic, they feel so authentic i swear the author could secretly be joe iconis and joe tracz. the balance between “it’s been a year and they’ve changed and moved forward and become friends” and “it’s only been a year, there are a lot of things that are still haunting them and their relationships aren’t perfect” is struck beautifully. and jeremy’s jewishness is actually acknowledged in this fic - portrayed totally naturally and as an important part of him, in fact. also, jeremy has a therapy bunny. it’s literally the cutest thing i’ve ever read.

jeremy heere and (failing at) the art of being charming - hamelott (8225 words)

rich/jeremy fluffy coffeeshop au! this is literally so cute, and their characterizations are great and hilarious on the surface but even better once you dig deeper, and their relationship growing through this killed me. and the background characters and relationships (michael and jeremy’s friendship and michael being hella into jake) are just as wonderful as the main characters of rich and jeremy.

Sleepover - BackyardPodcast (1317 words)

a michael and christine friendship, they’re at a sleepover where they discuss things such as discovering their queerness and how michael may or not be in love with christine’s ex-boyfriend. their characterizations are so spot-on, their interactions are super cute, the whole discussion about michael’s gayness and christine’s aromanticism literally hit so hard i lowkey cried, and michael’s crush on jeremy is treated in a healthy way.

Just a Really Bad Night - Snovi (6844 words)

a zombie apocalypse fic in which jeremy comes back from a trip not okay, and michael becomes even less okay than jeremy because of it. can’t talk about the plot too much without spoiling it, but the interactions between jeremy and michael murdered me, and i was sobbing all the way through the end. warning for vomiting, death, guns/shooting, murder, and suicide. (yeesh that sounds heavy but it’s a really really good fic.) also note that it’s tagged as boyf riends but the relationship is actually platonic
