I know we don’t really talk about The Starling Girl because of how triggering the character that Lewis plays in that is.
However, that is honestly one of my favorite performances from him. It reminded me slightly of The Devil All The Time (maybe that has to do with Eliza?) and he was just so convincing. Like, the whole time I knew I shouldn’t fall for the hot young preacher but he’s charming and I did and it’s easy to put yourself in Jemma’s shoes.
Anyways, it’s actually a good movie and Lewis is really good in it and if you can handle the contents it’s definitely a movie that you should watch.

Watching Cats (2019) DvD Commentary
Thoughts as I watch:
Tom is literally basing this entire movie on the one time he saw Cats in 1981 when he was 8 years old
He called the movie a coming of age film about Victoria meeting characters that effect her and that Tugger represents the sin of lust (yes I am laughing)
He said abandoned three times in a row to describe Grizabella
Tom made up the thing about Grizabella used to be with Macavity happened because he wanted to cut out the idea that she was a prostitute
Has Bustopher eat trash because he thought that's what cats would be more interested in
The pause in Bustopher Jones when he says to gather the cats is a meta joke about the cats actually being people
The food was CGI
"Sees the implication of his unchecked appetites" in reference to Victoria and Bustopher Jones
Hooper brought his niece and nephew to set to play on the Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer set
He keeps insisting that there is a learning and growing arc for Victoria, but I have no idea what he's talking about
He has barely talked about the characters as actual characters and mostly just talks about how great it is to work with famous celebrity number five or how they're symbolical. I think he's making things up at this point
He added the love story because he thought Misto trying to figure out how to be a magician was a good parallel with Victoria's story of finding herself
Originally the first barge scene was longer with a lot of improv from James and Rebel as Growltiger went on
"Robbie Fairchild is brilliant" that is the only thing Tom said that makes sense
This man really said "women can be the god of cats in 2019"
Judie and Ian were the ones to decide that Gus and Old D had a thing...well at least they followed the pattern of cats actors making weird decisions for their characters
I've come to the conclusion that Tom chose his cast based on which famous actors he's always wanted to work with
Tom has no idea how to describe choreography...just like how he has no idea how to film it
Giving Victoria a solo to sing was ALW's idea
He thinks the call and response of Beautiful Ghosts and Memory is brilliant and doesn't understand how he fucked that up
They almost cut "Moments of Hapiness"
He keeps talking about how great this film is for women, but where is Demeter sir!
He didn't know that it's Jellylorum that sings Gus' song and because Ian couldn't tell what the relationship between the two was he cut out her singing it for him
He talks about the advantage of mixing the CGI with the practical clothing, and I'm like, you know what would be even better? No CGI!
I don't know who's playing Bomba, but she was the first person to be cast in Cats
He said that he thinks Macavity works better as a solo and it didn't need to be a duet...I have never felt more like murder in my whole life
Taylor Swifts dad gave him the idea for the catnip
He likes the idea of Macavity being evil yet still plays by the rules...why?
He's talking about the changes from the musical to Mr Mistoffelees, and boy is he not bringing up that Tugger is the one that sings the number
Talks about community like there was any in this movie
This man has no idea who Jemima/Sillabub is, does he?
He finally mentioned Mette Towley as Cassandra at least. Recognize that she's the best character in this film goddamit!
Apparently Munkustrap was supposed to be learning about leading this whole film...wat
Apparently he watched the 98 film several times while writing the script...and yet this movie is straight
I'm not watching the commentary for the end credits. Fuck I hate this man

if you had to choose between one or the other, which stbh characters would prefer cats (original stage production) and which would prefer cats (cgi movie adaptation)
Having seen both productions multiple times I'm uniquely suited to answering this question
Ok straight up, the easy ones:
Félix prefers the stage play because he loves the theatre full stop and also as a big fan of musicals, the stronger vocals in the stage play would appeal to him. Favourite song: Moonlight (he finds it relatable). Favourite cat: Mister Mistoffelees (projects onto him hard as an aspirational figure, a hot cat man is clearly into him and gassing him up etc)
Bowman: it all depends on which Rum Tum Tugger he thinks is hottest and I think Jason Derulo might win that one, and I don't Bowman has much appreciation for art in the first place so the flaws will go over his head. Prefers the movie. Favourite song: Rum Tum Tugger obviously.
Islin: it's all equally horrible to him but I think the stronger vocals of Stage Old Deuteronomy would win him over to it. The theme of blood sacrifice is relatable and he thinks he would probably want to go to the heavyside lair. Favourite song: Cats (the first song), because everything after that is just another torment to suffer through. Favourite cat: Mister Mistoffelees (thinks he's kinda cute and magic is a sin so that makes him a sort of psychosexual forbidden fruit)
Jean: prefers the movie. He thinks it's hideous but he's the type of person who's fascinated with the cutting edge cat mocap cgi. He'd watch a behind the scenes documentary about the film's technological aspects. Favourite song: Skimbleshanks, ditto for favourite cat. He likes trains.
Erica: obsessed with the movie but like ironically you guys seriously it's just so bad it's good you gotta watch this and laugh with him it's hideous!! The type of person truly pushing the boundaries of irony because if they truly thought it sucked they wouldn't be singing along. Also a Skimbleshanks fan
Léa: sorry it's the movie again, she can't stand the goofy make-up and costumes from the stage play and she believes that the cgi cats are a step up actually. Favourite song: Beautiful Ghosts. Favourite cat: Taylor Swift
Senca: the play. She appreciates the way it explains absolutely nothing and finds that the movie telegraphs its plot just a bit too much to hold her interest, and adds too much unnecessary context. She likes telling people after they all wall out of the theatre that she understood it all and nobody else picked up on the deeper themes. Favourite cat: Jemima (her staunch defence of Grizabella is heartwarming). Favourite song: didn't like any
Cain: kills himself. Favourite cat: Munkustrap

This third season of the series is only her first and she hit it out of the park as Christina Hunter, the new anchor on the show replacing Reese Witherspoon’s character. She’s already been recognized at the Gotham Awards for the performance, and now is excited about being up for an Emmy for the much buzzed storyline in which the owner of the network (played by Holland Taylor) is found to have written an email in which she described Hunter as an “Aunt Jemima.”
Beharie joins me for this episode of my Deadline video series, The Actor’s Side, in which we talk about that episode, other breakout career moments (including her starring role in the hit film Miss Juneteenth), and her experience working opposite Chadwick Boseman in the Jackie Robinson biopic 42. She also gives us a clue as to where her Morning Show character is heading in the upcoming season 4 of the series. what do you mean by horribly miscast?
Ooh story time! Sorry, this ended up so long for no reason. I felt like I needed to add context
Let me preface this by saying this was a good production. I'm being silly about it because I love the community theatre group this was done by, and still work with them years later.
I auditioned for a Summer community theatre production of Cats when I was 15 with my friend, because my high school had just done Cats for their Fall musical (I was still in middle school so I was not able to be in it), and became obsessed with the show (watched the 1998 movie 50 times, saw a professional production, memorized the cast recording, discovered fanfiction.net. You know, normal autism stuff).
This was a youth production, so the actors were 12-21. When I saw how many 18-21 year olds were auditioning and actually knew how to dance, I didn't expect to get any of the big roles. I was a very strong singer but pretty middle of the road when it came to dancing, and this is a very dance heavy show. I would have been happy with anything but really wanted Jemima. We just didn't really expect to compete with the older actors.
So imagine my surprise when the cast list came out and my friend and I got Old Deuteronomy and Bombalurina respectively. We weren't the only younger kids in bigger roles, but we were probably the youngest compared to how large the roles were. For example, Demeter was 20, other 15 and 16 year olds got Jemima, Coricopat, and Macavity, and most 12-14 year olds were unnamed ensemble cats.
I was ecstatic but also kind of like "wtf?" Because even at that age I knew this was a weird casting choice. I wasn't much of a dancer which Bombalurina is supposed to be, I was a very high soprano which Bombalurina isn't, and I was a shy kid who didn't know how to act sexy (and still don't).
I figured out pretty quickly that the director wasn't that familiar with the show. He would pronounce every character's name wrong, and had Cassandra sing her line in the opening number up the octave even though it's supposed to be low and the girl playing her was an alto, among other choices that were just weird. He knew the basic idea of what happened in each song but he definitely didn't get into the character descriptions and their personalities or relationships to each other. Which imo is the whole point but .. whatever. I got the role solely because I could sing and not because I suited the character at all. So I decided to play Bomba cute and young instead of trying to be big and flirtatious and failing spectacularly (at one point Demeter and Mistofelees took me aside and gave me new choreography for my solo in Macavity because all the choreographer gave me to work with was walking around and being sultry and like... trying to imitate what pole dancing looks like without a pole and I was super uncomfortable and just wasn't selling it at all.)
I did a good job in the end but the character I was playing was not Bombalurina. Imagine if you took Etcetera and gave her all of Bombalurina's songs. That was basically what I was doing.
Still my favorite show to this day though.
It's even funnier now because I tell people I played Bombalurina and they think I played the Taylor Swift version of the character. And I have to be like no she's actually not like that at all.

you’ve probably talked about this before so forgive me but as someone who has only seen the Cats movie, I’m so curious what your thoughts on it are (I sadly don’t remember the actual plot but I do remember liking the music)
how long do we have…..
Tumblr media
so i just wanna start off by saying: i was REALLY excited for the movie and REALLY wanted it to be good. like, i was ready to be TOXIC about this 😭 but then i saw it opening night and as the movie progressed i was like… this is terrible lol.
immediately we have to state the obvious: the digital fur technology DOESNT WORK. theyre fuckin ugly looking, and IMO part of the musical’s appeal is that i’m watching grown adults wear yak wigs, unitards, and leg warmers and they’re all dancing, singing, and acting like cats onstage. it’s crazy! and that’s what makes it so fun! it’s easier for me to suspend my disbelief that these people are cats! howard ashman once said something along the lines of “musicals only work onstage and in animation because you’ve already suspended your disbelief,” and it’s stuck with me ever since. there’s something about sitting in the theatre for 2-3 hours watching a production happen LIVE in front of you and shutting out the rest of the world. and for cats, seeing those huge set pieces that make YOU feel like you’re the size of a cat. and then having the cats come out into the audience and interact with you. it’s totally different compared to watching a movie. i easily believe these people are cats. i easily believe that I’M in this junkyard. you don’t get that with this movie.
and yeah like i mentioned earlier before i went crazy, the designs of the cats are butt fuckin ugly 😭 in the musical, i can easily tell the cats apart. they have their own distinct beautiful colorings and markings. in the movie, they’re all some boring shade of brown or grey. like where is demeter? jemima/sillabub? alonzo? i can’t tell these bitches apart and they look gross!!!!!
the plot: idgaf what anyone has told you, the musical has a plot !!!!! it’s pretty paper thin, since i think the main focus of the show has always been the dancing, but it’s still there. basically, it’s a huge honor for the jellicles to be reincarnated. every year, it’s old deuteronomy (their leader) that chooses who gets to live their next life. i’ve always described it as “a chorus line with cats.” the cats present themselves and all their accomplishments to prove why they’re worthy. they break the fourth wall multiple times, explaining things and interacting with the audience. but they also don’t explain EVERY LITTLE THING. the show is sung through. they don’t sing “grizabella the glamor cat” and then turn to the audience like, “she’s a bitch cuz she turned to drugs/prostitution/what have u and left us and so we don’t like her.” we already got that in the song. in the movie, they make victoria (the white cat) represent the audience, and they explain everything to her. like. EVERYTHING. it’s redundant and clunky and doesn’t go with the story! and more proof that this movie Doesn’t trust its audience. and then the bullshit with macavity catnapping EVERYONE??? bitch bye i can’t 😭😭😭😭
the songs: i know every. single. word. to the original album. it is so serious to meeee 😭 it’s music by ALW, do u know how hard it is to fuck that up?! the arrangements are fuckin ATROCIOUS, and don’t even get me STARTED on the performances. they keep trying to inject humor in places that are arguably already really funny and ridiculous. bustopher jones always gets some giggles in the show but then in the movie they have to have james fuckin corden stop the song to make some dumb joke about “are u calling me fat?” like SHUT UP AND JUST SING THE SONG????? and then u have the random taylor swift song that is beautiful but doesn’t fit the story or vibe at ALL. that shit should have stayed in the end credits. the only number i honest to God enjoyed was skimbleshanks because they kept it upbeat and fun. rum tum tugger and mister mistoffelees were SO DISAPPOINTING especially because those numbers are PARTIES when u see them live and in the film they’re soooooo underwhelming. and don’t get me started on macavity. that number is supposed to be jazzy and sexy and fun and they gave us…. taylor swift. not even taylor acting as a cat, it’s literally just taylor in horrifying fur technology singing the song as taylor and randomly throwing around glittery catnip????? literally makes NO sense. and jennifer hudson is a beautiful singer, but i didn’t really care for her version of “memory.” especially when u watch it in the film she was doing… way too much. yall couldn’t CGI out the boogers running down her face?!:$:&/ this is wacky!!!!
anyways, if u like the soundtrack for the film, i promise you’ll LOVE the broadway soundtrack even more.
that’s all i can think of off the top of my head, but i’m sure there’s more😭 IMO, cats as a film only works if it’s animated or if you just film the stage production. the only cats film i acknowledge is the 1998 recording with john partridge and elaine paige, so if u can get your hands on that or even a bootleg of the 2016/17 broadway revival i cannot recommend them enough! i know cats has a reputation for being dumb and weird, and maybe she is, but she’s *MY* dumb and weird show. its fun and exciting and im always in awe of the pure TALENT you need to have to be in a production. i genuinely can’t describe what it was like to see this show live back in 2017. easily top 5 theatre experiences, and ive seen 50+ musicals/plays.
