hey besties! i talked about starting to do monthly recs, and i've decided to go through with that - in both the 911 and 1d fandoms! so here goes nothing, i guess... i based the formatting of these posts off of a few mutuals who do regular fic rec posts <3 much love to them. i read a lot of 911 fic this month! way more than i have in the past, so here goes nothing. this month we've got tevan, buddie, riaz, and a sprinkle of gen christopher!

It's been a while since I've been able to do one of these! And I'm still very much catching up with all of my reading, but for now, here's a list of fics I've read this month that I've absolutely adored. As ever, mix of pairings/warnings etc.

No one is shocked when Harry Potter presents as an Alpha. No one, that is, except for Harry Potter himself, who doesn't know what to do about any of it: not the weird instincts, or the horrifying anatomy, or the fact that he can't seem to stop fucking Draco Malfoy, and especially not whatever 'surprise' Draco has waiting in Harry's bedroom.

With a bang, the front door of Grimmauld swings open and Draco walks in, smelling exactly the same way he always does. Not like the scent of the heat that’s been oozing out of Harry’s bedroom and getting his dick hard for the past five minutes. “What the fuck?” Harry hisses. “You—you’re not upstairs.” “No,” Draco says, removing his calfskin gloves one finger at a time. He looks up at Harry and smiles like a fucking psychopath. “But your present is.”

Harry is too absorbed in holding Albus close to realize he is being disarmed. Before he even senses the sizzle of magic, there is a shout of Expelliarmus! and his wand goes flying. With a stumble, Harry tries to rush after it, but another spell pins him to the wall. "Hello, Potter." The drawl would be enough of a give away, but the pointed, pale face that invades his line of sight is so jarring in its malice and familiarity. There is no one else who looks, smells, or breathes like Draco Malfoy.

Tonight, Scorpius is in charge. Whatever he says, whatever he wants, goes.

"I want you to fuck James," Scorpius says. He is not smiling, he doesn't blink, barely moves; Teddy isn't even sure he breathes. The room is quiet. Teddy swears the silence whispers all the dangerous implications of that statement. "James?" Teddy asks. "James Potter?" It's not quite a question, actually. Teddy hopes Scorpius doesn't hear the edge of arousal laced in his voice.

Harry waved him off as if to say it didn’t matter. “I heard you had a thing for older men.”

Currently, Harry was keeping his eyes trained on the pitch, watching the players do warm-up formations. Looking over to where Teddy, James and Scorpius were chatting was out of the question. Scorpius had his back turned towards him, and now that he wasn’t in heavy Auror robes or Ministry robes, Harry could see he had filled out through training. Muscle had layered on his lithe form, and his muggle jeans did nothing but display it all. The blond stretched absent-mindedly, causing his jumper to ride up, giving Harry a full view of his perfectly sculpted— “He is your son’s age. What is wrong with you? Maybe I do need that app Jamie was talking about. Hey, look, there’s Ginny. Wave to the ex, Harry. Very good; quit ogling the Malfoy boy.”

I cannot even put it into words, the way James feels so immoral for being attracted to his now much younger best friend, Sirius deliberately leading him on, the pinning, Sirius being Harry's friend ( which is such a wonderful take to see ) and Lily being all supportive with her usual dry humour, all of them are so wonderfully done. It's a unique story, even in prongsfoot usual age gap themes with a wonderful narrative and hot smut . Go read and enjoy.

2. a piece i'm proud of? a piece i'm proud of.

i think i've recently taken a very critical eye to most of my stuff up on ao3, they aren't really stylistically/technically what i'd consider my best anymore, perks of years passing, i guess? but revisiting this weird little tumblr snippet that i called falling in love with a serial arsonist is still v emotionally compelling to me because it captures something about the incoherence of love and justice that i'm still quite interested in

19. new genre/style i've tried this year

side-effect of not writing that much is that i haven't ventured into any spaces that i hadn't already, most of what i've put out this year has been revising old interests to suit a stylistic flavour that feels more compatible with them now. but man, getting into reccing this year felt really fucking good, gave me some space to organise critical thoughts on creative masterpieces, delimited the horizons of my engagement with works that hold and stoke my attention.

& while both of these are unpublished, i've also really, really enjoyed writing a bit of dronarry & a bit of jeddy in '24, and diversifying from reading and writing straight & narrow drarry (yeah, both those words are ironic) offered me perspective on character work & interaction i don't think i had before. win, overall.

thank you for the asks, made me appreciate the year a bit more!

A Day in the Life of…Us? - Part 30/30: Forgiveness

The most important fact to be remembered was that James came back. It took him a few days, but there he was eventually at Teddy's door, stepping in like he owned the place and pulling Teddy into his arms. Against his body, taking his mouth with his and stealing his breath. Desperate to apologize, Teddy gave in to the boy's body with a fervor. Closing the door and pushing him back against its grounding hard surface while muttering how worried he'd been.

"I'm fine. I'm here. I'm fine," James reassured him in between kisses. All of the worries from these last few stressful days melted away beneath those wandering hands. Cementing their relationship back to the way things should be, everything else a mere stain on the tapestry of their future. But a stain nonetheless. Unwashable and unforgettable.

"I'm sorry," Teddy made sure to intonate when he felt he should stop and take a breath. His hands settled on James' cheeks. His fingers caressed his skin, selfishly making sure he hadn't hurt his lover with his anger. With his unchecked violence. "I'm sorry if I scared you or…or scarred you. I'm not saying it wasn't my fault, because in a way it was. I can't always place blame on the moon. I scared myself. Did I scare you?"

James laughed, soft and a bit haunted. "I deserved it," he parried with a mocking tone. "And I'm sorry, too. But we'll get past this – all of this."

The only thing that mattered was that James thought they still had a future. And Teddy couldn't help but to notice he was still wearing his ring. And Teddy was still wearing his bracelet. And nothing else in the world mattered. They could get through everything else as long as they still had this fire between them.

"I'm going to marry you, Edward Lupin. I'm going to wake up next to you for the rest of my life. We're going to have kids or…maybe just some dogs. Gods help me if you just want a cat, but I'll do that with you too. I'll do whatever it is you want. What we want. I'm going to wear you like a damn badge of honor for the entire world to see. I'm in it, Teds. I'm here and I'm done doubting you. Doubting this and doubting us."

Teddy couldn't help but to beam with pride at the surety behind those statements. He was on board and echoed every single one of those promises. "No more fucking your friends," he laughed. He felt like they could laugh now. If they couldn't find any humor in this, then the resulting darkness was likely to fester and spread. "Clear?"

Matching the goofy smile, James consented to that condition before continuing what they had started. Pulling Teddy close again and forcing him to believe every word he had uttered. Not that he had to do any of it. Teddy was already there and on board for all of it. And, despite their small setbacks, he couldn't wait to see how their future would unfold. Kids, dogs, cats…. Or perhaps just the two of them alone. Any of it. All of it. Whatever that might be.

"That cloud kinda looks like a dick," James said, his head cocked to the side as he squinted up at the periwinkle sky.

Teddy chuckled, lifting an arm that had been tucked between his head and the grass beneath him to swat James lightly. "Almost a year you've been at Quidditch training and your coach didn't manage to remove your head from the gutter, did he?"

James wiggled his eyebrows. "I play with balls for a living, Ted, with other young, sweaty, fit men."

"Oh, to be 19 and horny," Teddy sighed.

"Is that different than 25 and horny?"

"Not really. But I also don't play with balls for a living."

"No, but you earn your wages by dipping your quill in a pot of ink," James said with a wink. "How's that going, by the way?"

Teddy rolled his eyes. "It's fine, but there are times I have to keep from just hexing people. I swear to Merlin I should get an award for the number of times I've had to calmly explain to people how to do their jobs."

"Really?" James asked, leaning on his elbows.

Teddy scoffed. "Gods, Jamie, the Hogwarts Headlines was more professional than some of these idiots. It's better now that Skeeter's gone, but that's not a high bar to clear."

James laughed. It wasn't every day that Ted let himself get a little mean, so James wanted to make the most of it. He leaned a little closer, nearly letting their shoulders brush. "What do they do?"

"They don't seem to understand the difference between a fact and their shitty opinion," Teddy shrugged, smiling wryly. "And they don't like that someone under them has the power to delay their story."

"Yes, but you're the All-Powerful Assistant Head Line Editor," James shot up and spread his arms dramatically, deepening his voice. "Blocker of the Bullshit, Guardian of Grammar!"

Teddy threw his head back and let out a low laugh that shot right to James's chest, the warmth and butterflies startling but familiar.

"Tell me more," James said, lying back down next to Teddy, turning on his side to face him fully.

Teddy shook his head, settling to mirror James's position in the grass. "I don't want to talk about work."

James raised an eyebrow. "No?"

"No, I want to talk about you."

James blushed. "I'm not that interesting."

"Oh, I beg to differ," Teddy said, his eyes glittering. "And I think Puddlemere United would, too."

James picked at the grass next to him, not meeting Teddy's eyes. "What do you want to know?"

"Anything! I want to hear about all your escapades with the other 'young, sweaty, fit men' you encounter so often," Teddy smirked.

James shrugged. "Nothing to tell, really. Everyone's either straight or already dating someone, or both, and anyway I'm not interested in any of them."

Teddy raised his eyebrows. "Surely someone's caught your eye. Don't tell me Quidditch Hunk James Sirius Potter is single."

"Sorry to disappoint," James kept his voice light. "Turns out not a lot of people are in the market for a 19-year-old Chaser with knobby knees who sees dick-shaped clouds."

Teddy chuckle. "Trust me, they will be. You'll be beating them off with a stick after you play your first professional game."

"Yeah, well, I don't want any of them anyway."

"That's understandable. And you don't have to like anyone, Jamie, or date anyone if you don't want to. You're 19, you have your whole life ahead of you to find—"

"I know that, Ted. But just because I don't want them doesn't mean I don't want anyone. I've known what I've wanted since I was 13." The words were out before James could stop them, but he couldn't bring himself to regret it.

Teddy's eyes ran over James's face, assessing, and James kept from squirming under the scrutiny. He must've been satisfied with whatever he saw in James's expression, because Teddy leaned infinitesimally forward, looking at James intently. "You're not 13 anymore. If you want something, you have to ask for it."

James swallowed and clenched his fists, his palms sweaty. He took a fortifying breath and closed the distance, pressing his lips on Teddy's, pouring six years of pining and anticipation into the kiss.

Teddy responded in kind, opening up easily and letting James set the pace. James's head spun, delirious with the joy of a longing fulfilled. Above them, the periwinkle sky faded to orange, painting the clouds in a fiery glow.

I absolutely adore short stories, and I thought I'd use the spotlight saturday concept to spread love for them as much as I can. I will try my best to make this a monthly thing,, sometimes more or less frequent. I hope you find some bite-sized bits of escapism to enjoy through these reclists. He likes the pretty colours and the way the petals fall like rain, and he likes when Draco lifts him up to push his small fingers through the heaps of flowers. It’s Draco’s favourite too, so he sits with Scorpius by the pond often, under the full, soft petals, and watches Scorpius scoop at the water with a conjured green fishing net. He uses his magic to make the petals fall close to Scorpius, and they kiss the water and unfurl inches from him, until they’re scooped up by the net and placed in a pile on the grass./Scorpius laughs each time he catches one, patting his chubby legs with glee./It makes Draco feel warm.
