2022 Year End Fic Review

in the words of a very ancient internet joke, better nate than lever!!

1. What is your AO3 account?

My ao3 is lookatallthemoresigive, because that was my tumblr url at the time i created my ao3. I desperately need to change it but I'm having trouble coming up with a new one and am worried if i switch I'll lose brand recognition, which is hilarious bc my MO is to write a fic or two for a fandom and then bounce

2. How many words did you write total in 2022?

I wrote 8,487 published words, but i have at least 7k unpublished. There is a very long rangshi capture the avatar au that been languishing in my drafts for over six months that im hoping to finish up and post this year. I am not a particularly fast writer because i obsess over every word i use, but I've found that with practice im getting faster and better at writing more

3. How many fics did you publish in 2022? How many multichapters vs oneshots?

I published 4, which is about my usual (a couple of random scattered fics + yuletide). They're all oneshots of varying length. My new years resolution is to write 5 fics this year!! I'm holding myself to it. One day I'll write a complete multi-chapter fic, but it's not currently in the cards.

4. What was your longest fic? Your shortest fic?

Longest: a kyoshi novels fic about hei-ran, 바늘 구멍으로 하늘 보기

4,441 words that i agonized over, including the title. I'm super proud of this fic.

Shortest: your hair never falls in quite the same way, a locked tomb missing scene fic clocking in at 890 words.

I honestly had a pretty quick turnaround time writing this one. After i had a lovely and overwhelming response to a rangshi drabble in 2021, I've been trying to be better about posting fics regardless of their length. Sometimes, hitting 1k or even 500 words is not necessary to tell a story

5. What was your most popular fic? Your least popular fic?

Most popular: kiss you too hard and follow you west another quick turnaround, this is a rangshi fluff fic so i’m not surprised

Least popular: Shinrin-Yoku, my gen character study yuletide fic for a video game that came out in 2020. I'm not losing any sleep over it. Its currently at a 15% kudos to hits ratio which good!

6. What fic didn’t perform as well as you thought it would?

Listen, I died on some weird hills last year (the love interest’s mom needs more of a backstory!!!!), so any response is a good response. I guess I was secretly hoping your hair never falls would usher in an era of camilla/nona fics bc i was certain it was going to be a thing, but the book came out and crushed those dreams. I still maintain nona had a crush on cam!!

7. What fic performed way better than you thought it would?

바늘 구멍으로 하늘 보기 because as I mentioned above, it was a character centric fic focused on a minor character. glad the kyoshi novels fandom appreciates milfs!

8. What was your favorite fic you wrote from 2022?

This is turning into a whole arc. I love the nona fic dearly, it makes me happy every time i read it, but im so proud i pulled off that hei-ran fic. Writing a character arc is not easy or as instantly gratifying as making two characters kiss. I knew I was pouring my heart (research into ancient Korean tea ceremonies for half a scene! Politics! Asking @funnefatale to bug fandom friends for Korean sayings for me!) into a work that simply might not be received. Also, I finally came out to my mom around the time i was writing this for unrelated reasons, and this fic reminds me of that 💕

9. What was your favorite fic that somebody else wrote in 2022?

by land, by sea, by dirigible, @firstelevens' amazing c&d/tfatws fic which gave me everything i needed for BOTH shows. A two for one, can you believe!!

falling (for you) like snow on christmas, a warrior nun ava/bea hallmark au. I watched a lot of hallmark type christmas movies last year, and this fic delivered on the coziness these movies provide and the chemistry they usually don't. Also, it relased daily during the week leading up to christmas, corresponding to the days in the chapters, which was super fun to experience in real time.

The sellout au is actually a carmilla au! It's a proximity curse AU set early s1 that they decide there's Only One Way to cure. I had read a bellarke proximity curse au around the time (thats how old this fic is. We're talking the 100 s1!!) and really enjoyed it and thought it'd be a good match for laura and carmillas antagonistic relationship the first half of s1. I still think it's a really fun dubcon trope and should be used in more fics as like a magical handcuffed together/trapped in a closet situation The title is now deeply ironic, bc its hard to sell out for a dead fandom, but it was very much an active fandom at the time. It's 95% completed, but i chickened out when i got to writing the porn (which was the entire point of the fic), and the movie having a sex scene made me decide to shelve it Usually i find the plot and lead up to these types of fics can be boring, but this one has really fun quickfire plot scenes that I'm super proud of, and definitely helped when writing the wn married in vegas au im currently considering just finishing and posting it, mostly so it'll help knock arrow off my top fandoms in my profile. we'll see. Snippet: Only, when Laura's hand had grabbed Carmilla's to wrestle her off the computer, she felt a rush of clarity, like diving into a crisp pool on a hot summer day. They froze. Laura gingerly lifted her hand off, and felt the loss of contact like a dull ache. She put it back over Carmilla's, and the clear feeling returned. “Wow, they really messed this potion up.” “That's, that's not normal?” Laura's pulse was racing, which was a little ridiculous. Get it together, Hollis. “No, I've seen love potions in action before, and usually the second you make eye contact you start ripping off clothes. At the very least when there's physical contact. It takes some effort to screw up a potion this bad.” “What if it's a friendship potion? Maybe we just need to hug for a little bit and then we can get back to our busy, saving the university lives.” “Really, Kit Kat, a cuddle potion?” Carmilla smirked. “If you wanted to get into my bed so bad, you could've just asked.” “Ugh!” Laura threw up her hands. “If you want to be stuck like this forever, fine. I am going to go shower.” “Maybe it's a showering potion,” Carmilla called out as Laura trudged off to the bathroom. “Water could be the only way to break it! I really should come join you--” She slammed the door, but it wasn't thick enough to shut out Carmilla's laughter.

I MUST KNOW ABOUT THE CHUCK AU

the funny thing about that title is its hilariously broad. I have at least two other chuck aus for different fandoms (Runaways and Sweet/Vicious) lurking in my gdocs in the drafts of other completed works

aside from arrow ones we basically created as a fandom, all my chuck aus have been for f/f pairings, which means the inversed gender tropes from the show are removed, but leaves interesting questions like why was dating the cover chosen for these two women? For the Sarah stand in, how has being gay affected her life as a spy? For the Chuck stand-in, it gets a little hard as i have to divide up the couple's friend group like they're getting a divorce, and sometimes they're much more of a loner than Chuck (see: Ophelia from S/V), so its difficult to find characters to populate their civilian life

For every fandom chuck au I've ever briefly entertained, the first scene i always write is the bomb kiss scene. It's a great way to get a sense of where the characters priorities and principles differ, and also i get the instant gratification of writing the first indication their feelings are very mutual.

Anyways, this specific wip is a warrior nun chuck au.

Of all the ones I've had kicking around, this one has the most solid plot outline and interesting contrasts with Chuck as a series.

Ava's best quality is her love and gratitude for being alive. She's never had a chance at a normal life, and this makes her conflict about desiring one while having an innate need to help people more interesting than Chuck's resentment of having an average life. Complicating things, the Intersect also acts as spinal technology for her, so removing it would very likely be deadly. (Thanks, secret shady government organization for jamming ultra classified technology into her back!)

In this, Ava and Beatrice's cover is roommates, and she's fake dating another of her handlers (Michael), which is a pretty wild decision to make for an au built around fake dating. I felt this was the more interesting take and truer to Beatrice’s very reserved character. Michael has real feelings for Ava, which would lead to a fun love triangle/pining and ramp up the tension

This fic would take place in more of what I would consider the second season, with the previous season being about Ava learning to become a spy and a civilian, with Mary as Ava's handler and roommate. After the s1 finale, Mary goes off on a globe trotting, no-holds barreled revenge mission to track down Vincent. Beatrice, who briefly helped initially train Ava, is brought in to be Ava's handler and she's STRESSED about it.

I feel like Mary and Ava's dynamic is either not explored enough in fic or mostly revolving around Avatrice. They have a great friendship and chemistry, and having Ava learn most of her spy skills from Mary and then learning to work with Beatrice would be really cool, and I'd want to write some prequel case fics about this. Mary takes a more coaxing, laid back approach to handling Ava that is very different from Beatrice’s direct, appraising style.

I don't know if its the same for you, but usually there's one section of a wip that i love the most that keeps me going for the rest. That section is this snippet below:

"Oh thank fuck you picked up!" Ava exhales in a rush, her voice tinny over Mary's shitty burner phone. "I need your advice."

"Ava?" Mary can already feel a headache coming on. "This line is for emergencies only--"

"Beatrice kissed me!"

"What?"

"We thought we were gonna die! Would you kiss me if you thought we were both about to die?!"

"No," Mary scoffed. "You wish."

"Right! So what does it mean? Does Agent Perfect Score have a crush? On me?"

Mary rolls her eyes. "Like your ego needs any more inflation."

"And if so, what should I do? God, I'm so confused. How does she feel. How do I feel? Can you come back and be my handler?" Ava pleads. "Because I don't want to kiss you and I keep thinking about kissing her and it's really distracting."

"Wow, thanks Ava. I'm flattered."

"Hey, you're the one that turned down my very generous "if we're both single and alive by 40" offer..."

"Yeah, I spend every waking minute desperately regretting it." Mary's phone beeps. "I gotta go."

"Wait, Mary, no!"

"Mary? It's me." Beatrice's voice sounds downright uncertain when Mary answers the phone. "I need your help. I uh, kissed Ava."

"Wow," Mary says, looking up to the heavens, beseeching whatever sort of Almighty was out there to put her out of her misery. "This is shocking information."

"I know." Whatever level of guilt/repression/shame spiral Beatrice is down has made her unable to comprehend sarcasm. "I figure, as the person last in relationship with an Intersect, you might be able to provide...guidance."

i just checked my drivers license: apparently i was mistaken and i’m 5′6.

i always remember it as tall, but not as tall as i want to be (5′7).

Thanks for the tips on making friends in college! But since I'm not very good at it, any tips on being the first one to talk to a new person? Like I really want to talk to the people around me but I'm nervous/ don't know what to say

no problem anon! oh i have been there soo many times.

you and the other person are in the same physical space for a reason (ie: class, activity, free food) so that’s always a safe jumping off topic

the common thing to ask about is the other person’s major, year, classes, and occasionally whether they live on campus or commute. 

sometimes i try to make a joke/observation about something going on around us, but i never make fun of someone/something, don’t put someone down to make yourself look better. 

but seriously, asking stuff about themselves is the most effective- you get to learn more about them, don’t have to speak as much, and then they’ll often ask you for your answer!

for suitemates and stuff, say hi to them and ask them about their day! college is so stressful, having someone genuinely listening as you vent really helps

Hey I just started college a week ago, and I was wondering if you have any advice for making friends?

hey there anon, congrats on starting college!

the number one thing i would suggest is join a club! i was just complaining about going back to school soon, but then i scrolled through my improv club’s fb page and i remembered how much i miss everyone and how excited i am to see and perform with all of them again!

if you live in the dorms, hang out in the common room! this is up to a certain point, of course, but when my roommate started hanging out in the common room we all gradually started joining her, and our suite became quite close. most of us are still great friends two years later!

talk to people in your classes! this will help you so much cause you can get notes for the times you have to miss class and you’ll people to study with! if talking to a rotating cast of people in a large lecture hall isn’t your thing, discussions, study groups, and free on-campus tutoring are where i have had an easier time getting to know people

especially in your freshman only classes if you have them, people in your class are just as nervous and excited and hoping to make friends as you are! 

on a related note, befriend your tas! they’re usually pretty cool people, and going to their offices hours means extra help  and winning their love so they’ll give you good grades

also food

food makes you a lot of friends

i've heard a lot of cfl players are american players who couldnt get into the nfl or are trying to get into the nfl lol

so like. even if he was solely american it wouldnt be super surprising for him to have been in the cfl 

ahhh that makes a lot of sense because i think he got an injury in college and so he was sidelined for most of his time on the team so sadly not what the nfl was probably looking for :((
