Noticed the side eye and dark look Jaylen gives ND-5 here when ND asks for Kay's opinion instead of relying entirely on Jaylen's orders and expertise.
This is definitely the moment he notices that there's something going on between them that he never took into account because it never happened on previous missions, that they would grow so close and attached to each other while working together that his droid's loyalty would be swayed by the rookie scoundrel.
This is the moment he realizes he's losing ND and has to double down on using the restraining bolt to keep his control over him.

“You owe Jabba money?”
She'd found the idea humorous, that he—that a droid—would be in financial debt to a crime lord. It wasn't an accurate assumption, not completely, but the principle of the matter remained. Even droids—not their owners—could be indebted to Jabba, and droids such as him would certainly be punished if they didn't come through. [ He hasn't spoken about his time in service to Jabba. Those aren't memories he's intent on revisiting. ] Kay had learned, though; the relationship between droids and money.
“I don't get a cut. I'm a droid, with a restraining bolt and property of Jaylen Vrax.”
Jaylen was the one who controlled the finances. The one to whom money flowed. Of course, ND-5 had been able to access funds—weapons upgrades, bribes and payment—every dollar purposefully spent. ND-5 is a droid; superfluous purchases were unnecessary, it was pointless to acquire anything that did not enhance his capabilities. (If he is honest, thread and needle was superfluous; dusters aren't standard issue, don't provide any real use to an old BX Commando unit. Then again, Jaylen deemed his maintenance and upgrades superfluous, too.) It's strange to own money. A lot of things are strange; getting an equal cut of any job he and Kay do, belonging only to himself, reporting to Kay only if he chooses. She pries, of course. But never with entitlement; always bright eyed, lips quirked—asking questions out of genuine curiosity, and a desire to know him better. (That's yet another strange thing. That someone would devote time to knowing him better, and care in their methods for the task.)

Everything You Should Know About Star Wars Outlaws
It is a period of civil war across the galaxy…a perfect opportunity to make it big in the treacherous criminal underworld! Massive Entertainment’s Star Wars Outlaws, an open-world adventure set in the famous galaxy far far away, puts you in the shoes of a cunning new scoundrel on the scene named Kay Vess as she takes on a dangerous heist job to earn herself a real reputation. Explore numerous planets - some new, some familiar - throughout the job, stealing right from under the nose of a notorious gangster and evading the Empire’s attention as you reach the top of the galaxy’s most wanted list. Outlaws is set to release on August 30th 2024, but if you need to catch up on any news beforehand, I’ve gathered here a rundown on all the details we know about the game for you to enjoy. Read on!
The Basics - A Good Blaster at Your Side Outlaws is the first of its kind for the Star Wars gaming repertoire - a singleplayer, story-driven open-world adventure, at a considerably larger scale than the previous major games like Jedi: Survivor. It features wide-open free exploration of numerous planets in the galaxy far far away, in a choices-matter narrative where every move you make could earn you reputation across worlds or land you in trouble with the Empire. Explore, sneak, steal and fight your way across the most famous fictional galaxy in the most gorgeous high-definition graphics it’s ever been witnessed in - I almost thought a handful of the games’ screenshots were taken from some upcoming show!
Gameplay Details The game truly allows the player to pick their approach to any situation. In action, will you go the stealthy route, or would you prefer a straight fight to all that sneaking around? Guns blazing is always an option, or you could send your faithful little companion Nix to distract enemies, grab weapons or activate diversions. When things get too hot, you can activate a special focus mode to slow down time - even in the midst of a high-speed chase on your speeder - and carefully line up your shots to take down your targets. By completing certain jobs, attacking certain factions or making certain dialogue choices, you can earn reputation (good or bad) with the various crime cartels you’ll encounter - but of course, gangsters don’t play nice with each other. Pick your allegiances carefully, as working for one gang will often make you an enemy of another. When the Empire catches wind of your crimes, you’ll deal with Grand Theft Auto-style wanted levels as increasingly difficult stormtroopers, death troopers, walkers and even TIE fighter patrols are deployed for particularly troublesome scoundrels. When the pressure gets too high on the surface, you can flee to the stars in your ship - unless there’s a fleet of Star Destroyers or bounty hunters ready to ambush you in orbit for an all-out dogfight!
The Characters So, who are the stars of the show here? The player controls Kay Vess (Humberly González), a scoundrel who grew up on the corrupt streets of the casinos of Canto Bight and wants to finally make a name for herself in the criminal underworld scene. Accompanying her are her faithful pet merqaal Nix (Dee Bradley Baker), who is excellent at distracting enemies and grabbing items, and Clone Wars veteran commando droid ND-5 (Jay Rincon) that has managed to stay mostly in one piece in the decades after the war and now works as a personal enforcer. The game sees them pulling off a daring heist job that promises to put Kay’s name on the map, masterminded by notorious gunrunner Jaylen Vrax and targeting the mansion of the dangerous crime lord Sliro, who commands an army of bounty hunters to “discourage” any wannabe thieves. Additionally, Kay and crew will be tangling with various galaxy-spanning cartel gangs, including the Hutts, the Pikes, Crimson Dawn and more that will make either powerful allies or vicious enemies.
The Time and Place The game’s story takes place during the events of the Original Trilogy - more precisely, in the year between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The Empire is busy fighting a full-scale war against the Rebellion, allowing the scum and villainy of the galaxy to thrive in the background. The familiar “used future” aesthetic of the Original Trilogy is ever-present in Outlaws, with the classic screen-wipe scene transitions, rusted chrome ships, and Kay’s extremely 80’s mullet and jacket. There’s plenty of worlds to explore, both familiar and new - visit Jabba’s Palace on Tatooine (and catch a glimpse of a certain scoundrel frozen in carbonite), survive the mean streets of Canto Bight, and navigate the snowy alleys of Kijimi. Brand-new planets are introduced in this game too, such as the windswept savanna moon Toshara and the war-torn jungles of Akiva. The player will be able to soar across the open lands of these freely-explorable worlds on Kay’s trusty speeder bike, and fly through the stars beyond aboard her ship, the Trailblazer.
That’s all there is to know about Star Wars Outlaws before it releases on August 30th! I know I’m excited for this fresh new look at the galaxy far far away - let me know if you are too! Feedback, reblogs and likes are all much appreciated, and thanks for reading!

Star Wars Outlaws Preview - Everything We Know About ND-5 - Game Informer

Star Wars Outlaws Preview - Everything We Know About ND-5 - Game Informer
The June 2023 reveal of Star Wars Outlaws gave us our first glimpse of Kay Vess and Nix, the two protagonists of the game. From talking with Massive Entertainment during our recent trip out to Sweden to get our hands on Star Wars Outlaws, it sounds as though their bond will be special. However, they aren’t on this journey alone, as they are joined by a trenchcoat-wearing BX-commando droid named ND-5. Though Kay and Nix were greater points of emphasis during our studio visit, we had to ask the developers about the internet-popular droid that joins the Star Wars Outlaws adventure.
ND-5 joins Kay Vess in her trip around the Outer Rim and beyond, but he has a long history in the Star Wars galaxy prior to meeting up with Kay. “He is a BX-commando droid – a veteran of the Clone Wars – and he works as an enforcer droid for a character named Jaylen,” associate narrative director John Björling says. “ND-5 is there to make sure that Kay follows through with the heist job, but together, they’re going to face some big challenges and really get to know one another.”
The job that Björling refers to is referenced in the latest story trailer (see below). At the start of her adventure, Kay crosses Sliro, the leader of the Zerek Besh criminal syndicate, resulting in him putting a bounty on her head. Jaylen Vrax and ND-5 drop in on Kay to offer her a path forward. The only way she sees out of it is to pull off the ultimate heist to earn her freedom.

Since Kay meets ND-5 early on, he plays a crucial role in the story, as well as Kay’s mission to pull off this heist. Because he has experience in the Clone Wars and the criminal underworld, he’s a valuable asset to her. “He comes from the Clone Wars and he is wearing a lot of emotional kind of baggage from that,” Björling says. “He’s an enforcer droid and he’s seen a lot and he has a lot of experience in the underworld. Matching him up with Kay, it feels like the perfect kind of combination because she’s new to that world; she doesn’t know the key syndicates and the major players, but ND-5 is there to guide her and support her as they are moving towards the mark.”
The reveal of ND-5 inspired a lot of excitement, with much social media attention put on his design. “First of all, I was very excited to see the fans’ reactions to ND-5’s design; it was really great to have all these reactions, and I think it really added to his character,” associate art director Marthe Jonkers says with a smile. “For his design, we really had a similar approach as we did to all the other characters in really trying to show his background story in his look. So, of course, he’s a BX-commando droid. He was made by separatists during the Clone Wars. He’s been through a lot; you see that – he has a scar on his chest, but he tries to hide that with his jacket. You will find out more about him in the game, so I’m not going to spoil too much, but you know, he’s walking a bit [lumbering]. He’s usually sitting hunched over. And, you know, we tried to put a lot of personality into this droid by using these kinds of elements. I’m really happy that people really picked up on them and he became very popular. I think he’s a super interesting character and I’m looking forward to people playing the game and finding out more about him.”
ND-5 graces the box and key art of Star Wars Outlaws, all but guaranteeing he’s a major player in the game
Star Wars Outlaws arrives on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on August 30. For more exclusive information about Star Wars Outlaws, be sure to visit our exclusive coverage hub at the banner below.
