He gets his one last night, just before his final exams

He's a mess before they can even get started

Regulus holds James' face. He himself is tearing up.

"Hey-what did.I say about crying?" It doesn't have the desired effect, because he's so clogged with emotion

"I know," a kiss. It lasts long because they're running out of time now, "I love you too,"

James marries Lily. He never bothered to find out who Regulus married. Couldn't stand it.

Then there was the wedding in the DP

Lily knows. She's known for as long as she's known James and she holds him as he sobs into her shoulder, the black ajd white image of Regulus Black, the heir to the Black family smiling at the camera with his new wife on his arm

That's not Regulus' real smile. James would know. He's seen it

James doesn't ask how Lily knows, but she tells him it's okay

That it will always be okay with her and that she'll love him no matter what

Harry comes along and for a while, James is okay

Regulus doesn't join Padfoot and Moony to come visit their son

Regulus Black confirmed dead

And James is a shell of a person after that

So when Voldemort is at their door on October 31st that fateful night, and all James can do is tell Lily to run with Harry
