Morse and loneliness

Morse always sees himself as alone - perpetually lonely with no one to love him, nor even close friends. And while the younger Morse played by Shaun Evan’s certainly channels this, it is particularly pronounced about how John Thaw plays the older, more cynical Morse in IM. But is it really the truth?

The romantic love might have eluded him, but friendship? At a conservative estimate, he had Fred Thursday (in spirit if not in person post-Exeunt), Peter Jakes, Jim Strange, and Robbie Lewis as lifelong friends who would willingly lay down their lives for him (as he would for them). And it would probably be entirely fair to add Bright and McNutt to that count.

The more I watch Endeavour and IM, the more I feel that the only thing Morse actually struggled with was being a good boss. When he has to take Fancy under his wing in Endeavour, he is obviously completely unprepared for that role. And in IM, we really don’t get a feel for what sort of boss he would have been to a beginner because Lewis (already an experienced DS and a happily married man with kids he is devoted to when their paths first cross) is streets ahead of him from the get go when it comes to emotional maturity and balance.

Navi Desmond Navi Desmond Navi Desmond!

I’m going to be honest, nonny. It’s been a while since I watched Avatar but I’ll try my best XD

For this one, we’re going for full on Desmond gets reborn in Pandora as a Na’vi. He’s not connected to an avatar like Jake was in the beginning. He was reborn and raised in Pandora.

In this one, he could be reborn as part of the Omatikaya Clan or the Metkayina Clan so he can interact with the characters from the film, maybe even become something like a friend to Jake’s children.

But, of course, because this is Desmond Miles, we’re going to make his life a bit difficult.

He doesn’t like to connect with Eywa because Eywa can read all of his thoughts and memories, including his memories as Desmond Miles.

Eywa sees him as their child but Desmond doesn’t like it when it pokes around his mind.

It reminds him too much about how he spent his last few months with a mind slowly unraveling.

And connecting to Eywa always makes Desmond feel like he could see his ancestors.

Like he was having a Bleeding Effect episode that was so severe he could not trust any of his senses.

This puts him somewhat in the same boat but on opposite sides with Kiri who also has a special connection to Eywa.

They don’t necessarily hate each other but they don’t get along all that much. They act like friends who bicker and would stress they weren’t friends.

He’s definitely strange in the eyes of everyone and the only reason why they haven’t clocked that he was reincarnated is because Desmond is baffled by many of the tech he sees the humans use.

He sometimes wonder how long he had been dead.

Does he miss being human?

Not really.

He does sometimes miss the people he knew.

Not just the people Desmond Miles knew but the people his ancestors knew and cared about.

He sometimes missed the comforting presence the Bleeding Effect shrouded his senses in, to let himself believe the lie that his ancestors were there.

That he wasn’t alone.

That was what made Eywa dangerous.

Desmond knew he could just as easily lose himself if he continued to connect with Eywa.

And that is what Kiri doesn’t understand.

Thinking about cycles of revenge in the prequel games again.

The Azran people refused to free the sentient golems, so the golems destroyed their civilisation. A few surviving Azrans imprisoned the golems in ice and set up their legacy knowing the golems could wipe out a future race. If whoever freed the Azran emissary viewed her more as a pawn than a person— enough to pierce her heart— then the legacy would be unleashed.

Leon and Rachel Bronev were taken by Targent and their kids were left behind.

After Rachel’s death, Bronev rose through the ranks of Targent and eventually, tried to bring his eldest son into the fold, like many archaeologists before him. When Desmond refused, his family were killed.

From then on, Descole became so determined to unlock the Azran sites before Targent that he would hurt/kidnap/manipulate other people’s families— even his own brother who stood in his way.

Of course, the people Descole used as pawns also reacted: 

Third Eye Jakes’ control over Misthallery, Oswald Whistler trying to steal others’ lives to revive his daughter, Randall terrorising Monte d’Or and his old friends…

And so on.

The cycle only stops when someone decides to break it. Luke— despite seemingly being shunned by his family and his friends— writes to Professor Layton for help. Melina— despite being given a second chance at life— hopes Professor Layton will stop her father. Angela— despite her losses and her troubled past with Layton— reaches out to him after eighteen years.

Even Desmond, on some level, realises this when he asks his brother to investigate the Azran with him. Sure, he ends up betraying Layton… but look at how well that worked out for him; he lost the Azran key to Targent and then Bronev unleashed the Azran legacy.

Aurora— despite everything the Azran did to she and her fellow golems, despite being kidnapped by Targent, despite the betrayals she faced even from her human friends— begs the light of the Azran to resurrect her friends after they sacrifice themselves.

Even if the prequel series isn’t very connected outside of the Azran sites being mentioned, I like how this cycle is felt throughout. I love how Layton— a contender for the world’s most tragic backstory, who’s suffered so much thanks to the Azran— steps in to stop it.

Jo: *with a knowing look* De you know the real reason you volunteered us is because you don't trust anyone else to get quality groceries and its a perfect excuse to make your homemade pizza.

De: *scoffs and gives Jo a little shove* Well a choose your own toppings, from scratch, pizza bar sounds way better than a couple of boring frozen Digiorno. Plus It will be a fuck ton tastier and an added activity.

Jo: *chuckles and links arms with De* Oh I'm not complaining your constant need to be in the kitchen keeps me very well fed. And the fact that your cooking is Michelin worthy doesn't hurt either.

MC: *running in slow motion ready to jump into the band's arms*

Ro: Uh...what's that?

MC: Guys!!! I've been... *gets closer and jumps into the group*

Ro: *Jumps away*

Jo: *is startled and drops their tote bags, and scrambles to pick everything up*

De: *is standing baffled holding MC in their arms, in a classic firemen's carry, still has tote bags on each shoulder*

MC: I've been looking everywhere for you guys!

Ro: *stepping out in front of De and MC, laughing* Well you found us. What's up?

MC: Uh...nothing actually.... I just missed you all....*gets intensely embarrassed and tries to scramble out of De's arms*

De: *keeps hold of MC, and continues on to the dorm* Well you're stuck with us now. *nonchalantly* What pizza toppings do you like?

Jo: *cracking up* It doesn't matter you bought every possible option! Silas is gonna flip when he sees the receipt.

I’m very much buried under a giant pile of scientific papers due to me having to write my thesis, but I still had to share my joy at today’s random Layton epiphany:

I can finally come to terms with Katrielle’s game and anime existing. In fact, I can come to terms and live peacefully with everything Layton-related existing. Heck, even Cheerful Mystery while we’re at it! Because there’s more than just one continuity and everything is canon, just within the confines of more than only one timeline.

Just take Katrielle’s entire series. If you thought that it was taking place after the six main games and movie, then none of it makes sense, if only because Flora doesn’t seem to be here, and the entirety of the prequel trilogy (aka three games and a movie) were literally Thanos snapped out of existence.

In the anime, when Marina shows that Luke made charms as reminders of the cases he solved with Layton, there are only charms for the first trilogy. Nothing about the prequels. Characters such as Emmy, Descole/Desmond, the Stansbury gang, Janice & Melina, are never mentioned, and despite Layton and Luke having disappeared for an entire decade, none of these competent people went to look after them? This simply doesn’t make any sense. If Layton and Luke ever met these people like they did in the main games, then the moment these people would have learned about them going missing, at the very least Emmy, perhaps Descole, and probably the Stansbury gang as well, would have gone on a literal rampage looking for them.

But then consider: what if this is an alternate timeline in which the prequel trilogy really didn’t take place? What if Flora, after the events of Curious Village, decided to stay in St Mystere instead of following Layton and Luke to London? Hey, all of that suddenly makes a lot more sense.

In that case though, why didn’t the prequel trilogy happen (assuming Flora’s decision to stay in St Mystere would simply be a butterfly effect consequence of an entire trilogy + movie being erased)? Could there be one single event that could justify such major events… never existing?

I can think of one. One very dark and tragic one, but one that could explain everything.

In the Katrielle timeline, Desmond Sycamore died alongside his wife and daughter.

There was no prequel trilogy, because there was no Descole.

The Tritons likely moved back to London early enough, around the same time as they did at the end of Last Specter, perhaps because Clark and Brenda’s team never found the Golden Garden and they decided to do something else. Anyway, there was nothing stopping Clark from leaving Misthallery, since Jakes had no reason to change Evan Barde’s will in order to make him mayor.

With the Tritons back to London and reuniting with Layton, Luke probably became his apprentice/assistant early enough after they saved a cat down a tree or something.

There could be a number of reasons why Emmy was never sent to spy on Hershel Layton. Perhaps Bronev felt bad for killing one of his sons and decided to leave the remaining one alone, for a change?

Hershel Layton never got to reunite with the Stansbury gang. Randall is probably still missing, leaving peacefully his life in Craggy Dale, unaware.

Hershel Layton never got to learn about his origins. Roland and Lucille probably ended up suspecting that something happened to the Sycamores, but they never had the heart to tell their son that not only did they hide from him that he used to have a brother… But also that said brother is now dead.

There could be many reasons why either Layton and Luke decided not to take Flora in, or Flora decided to stay in St. Mystere. Perhaps Layton simply didn’t learn that many lessons about the importance of family and adoption or something. He’s just a gentleman doing his thing, and Luke is his only companion.

It took much longer for Targent to find the three sites and unlock the Azran Legacy. Perhaps they never did. Perhaps they actually succeeded, eventually, and were wiped out by the golems due to not having been able to gather the five people required as a sacrifice in time.

Perhaps, thankfully, various governments from countries all around the world managed to prevent the world from ending completely by finding a somewhat peaceful agreement (Aurora certainly helped a lot with that, and likely became the human-golem ambassador). Perhaps the golems eventually accepted that an entire planet would indeed suffice as a place to live free, even if that planet isn’t Earth.

Perhaps the golems are still in contact with humanity and now want to get a job in the UK, because why not.
