New Vinyl New Artist

It would be a whole-ass lie to say I am some kind of music aficionado, when listening to streaming music I listen to the same five playlist on Spotify. When it comes to my vinyl I spent most of my collection restoring records I had back in the 90s. Then I focused in on certain artist I like, like getting Janet Jackson's entire discography on vinyl.

I am not closed to new music, but am not always exposed to new artist even though I listen to alt.latino on NPR. I am picky about the vocals of my artist, and I really prefer to BUY new music on vinyl. I know a lot of these artist stream their work, but why have a vinyl collection if you're not always adding to it?

Another way I hear new music are artist interviews on NPR, soundtracks from television shows or maybe something played in a podcast. I decided to put together a listicle of five of my favorite vinyl albums of artist I had never heard of and or never heard music from.

Amythyst Kiah - Wary Strange

I don't even know how to pronounce this artist name, but I heard her song "Black Myself" in an artist interview on NPR, and before it was even over I started Googling her artist website.

I am also not really sure how to categorize her maybe alternative folk rock? To be honest I have to be in the mood for this album, its doesn't get played as much of some as some of my other new music, not because I don't like it, but because its hard for me to pair it with other music.

Usually when I am listening to music, I like to think of other albums to play after it, and this is a stand-alone album that its hard for me to pair. I could do some Tracey Chapman or maybe some Lenny Kravitz, but she really has her own sound and she really changes up the tracks on the album.

But as I said in the intro, I love her vocals a little reminiscent of Dionne Farris from Arrested Development fame, she was also a very alternative artist who I find hard to pair with, even though I love her debut album "Wild Seed – Wild Flower".

Conan Grey - Superache

Wow, I couldn't even remember Conan's name as I was typing him into this listicle I was searching for Connor Grey! This aside I was very moved by a track called "Family Line" a song about alcoholism and familial physical abuse/violence, I found this very relatable.

I couldn't tell you what Conan's race was or sexuality, but I could tell you I love his smooth tenor vocals and very personal lyrics about his love life and friendships.

This is an album that has a more upbeat tempo but sometimes very sad subjects. I enjoy singing along with the young Mr. Grey. I can't overstate how when it comes to music, I am really just about the music.

I have a Led Zeppelin album and I couldn't even tell you if that is a single person or multiple people or what any of them look like. I wasn't remotely interested in seeing any of Conan's videos or seeing interviews, I just love this album!

bells atlas - the mystic

This was my first time buying an album from Bandcamp I don't think it gets anymore farm to table than that, meaning I really try to buy albums directly from the artist websites as opposed to other secondary markets like eBay or Best Buy.

I think I heard on NPR that buying music directly from the artist sites puts more of the money in the artist pocket. And I do genuinely want to support the artist, as an artist I understand how its important to get a bigger portion of the pie yourself not getting your monies diluted by agents, managers and in their case record companies.

Now I can't recall if this was the site where they let you choose what you want to pay, but I did have one of these smaller artist have that option and I paid the standard thirty-five bucks which to me is the standard for a single vinyl album.

I clearly recall where I heard a song from this "group" I think, remember I am not studying that kind of details. But Glenn Washington the host of Snap Judgement used the end of one of their episodes to play a track from bells atlas. I used Shazam and Google to quickly find who this frenetic music was from and ordered the album immediately!

I am pretty sure the lead vocalist is a Black woman, what I loved is the music, it wasn't R&B, maybe alternative club rock & roll music? I don't know why we feel the need to label music can't we just enjoy the sounds based on their own merits?

I love the fast-paced high energy music paired with the round and robust vocals, its totally pick-me-up music. I love pairing it with my Eric B & Rakim "Paid In Full" album they both are very upbeat and have lots of beats and rhythms. This is the kind of album I put on when I need to go outside and want to get energized before I leave the house!

José González - Local Valley

Mr. González be all up in my mentions, I love using that term, that isn't quite true but I seem to keep encountering his music on my television shows that it seems like he is following me. I first encountered him on NPR in a music interview, and I loved the soothing quiet tones of his vocals and accompanying music.

Primarily I use José's music to relax, calm down or get ready for bed. He seems to be able to magically take my anxiety and reduce it to a dull-ache and not a explosive-burst.

I heard something else of his recently looked up the album which was from a soundtrack of a 90s film and the album was like fourteen hundred dollars. Now I did sometimes put out a couple of hundred dollars for my Janet albums but I am not paying thousands of dollars for an album that I will only play during certain times. I do have an eBay search looking for a cheaper version.

Mr. González is a mix of two cultures what we used to call a bi-racial child, I think part is Mexican and the other part something Northern European, please fact-check me cause I wasn't studying any of these details. The only other personal information I recall about him was that he was in a group before, because I was looking for another song of his and found it under another name.

Right now he's hanging out in one of my tabs for consideration of me buying another one of his albums. Some artist end up having several albums in my collection sometimes surprising even me. I didn't realize I was such a big Alicia Keys & Lenny Kravitz fan I have about five albums from each of them.

Willow Smith - Empathogen

Okay okay okay, yes I know the fame of young Ms. Smith's family hardly makes her an unknown factor and I am not even gonna fix my face to lie that "Whip My Hair" wasn't a bop that was on high rotation in my home. But none of that was driven by her, her family wanted another pop-star and were seeking to create one. She clearly rebelled cutting off all of her hair showing that this isn't who she is.

I also watched this young woman who could easily be my niece hold her own with her very beautiful and formidable grandmother and moms Mrs. Jada Pinkett-Smitth at the red table. So I clearly know who she is, but I don't or didn't know who she was as an artist and this album gave me the opportunity to get into her head a bit more.

Full disclosure I am not one of those people who study lyrics or muddle over musical bars trying to find hidden meaning in the music. Half the time I don't even really understand what folks are saying, music is something that fills the background in my studio apartment. I am usually either writing, reading or doing something else around the house when I feel the need to bump some tunes. Unlike everything else on this list YouTube served up one of her videos to me, don't ask me which one, all I remember is she was laying down for the entire thing and it was shot from above.

YouTube knows my heart and knows I love Black artist and they didn't get it wrong sending me the young Ms. Smith. After the video ended I was already on her artist site looking for her new album.

It was on pre-order and after the Aaliyah experience I wasn't doing any more pre-orders, but the release date was only a little over a week away so I would just wait till May to cop it. There were a few technical bumps with the site, but then I finally got my copy and it was love at first listen.

Frankly not one album on this list I hated, I do have an album from a trans artist Beverly Glenn-Copeland called "Transmissions: The Music of Beverly Glenn-Copeland" where I wasn't crazy about two tracks, the opening one which has an operatic beginning and this other at the end of the first side that has this call and response.

Mx. Glenn-Copeland's speaking voice isn't my favorite thing, so the call and response is a bit grating to me. Otherwise I LOVE the album. I love their vocals and song choice, I love where they sing in their voice. I am thinking I should maybe attempt to look at Ms. Smith's lyrics and see what else she's trying to express, but I am NOT-THAT-PERSON, I'm the one who gets an album and only listens to the album, doesn't read liner notes, doesn't even open any included booklets with the album.

Ms. Knowles-Carter's Renaissance album came with I think two books which haven't as much as been cracked. I am one of those odd folks who just want to hear the music. I have now reserved my loud-time for Friday nights and Ms. Smith will be bumping Ms. Knowles-Carter out of her spot as my Friday night dance party album. But Beyince Act II will pair quite well with Empathogens's kinectic youthful and fun energies!

Madagascar in Nickelodeon Magazine (part 2 of 4)

The second time Madagascar was featured in Nick Mag was in their November 2008 issue, highlighting the film's release that month.

The cover features a conga line of several characters through the reserve, led of course by King Julien.

Madagascar got quite a good treatment in this issue; the rest is under the read more!

Included were nine punch-out trading cards. The pictures on the backs, when put together properly, form the film's poster. The Internet Archive does have a version of the website noted, but nothing loads on it, so we will never know what you call four penguins in the desert.

Next we have a small ad for the film's website, featuring King Julien. This site can be accessed on the Internet Archive here (the games are still playable!).

Next we have an ad for the film's tie-in video game. It has a board game path you could play on with a coin and any small objects as tokens.

Talking Animals

We chatted with the actors who voice the four main characters.

What is your character like? Ben Stiller (Alex): Alex is a performer. He's used to being the center of attention. He's a good friend, and the camaraderie with the other animals is really important to him. Chris Rock (Marty): He gets bored easily, and he pushes the whole crew. Everybody else wants to stay in the zoo and he's like, "Hey, there's a whole world out there." Jada Pinkett Smith (Gloria): Gloria is very loyal. She's pretty strong-willed, but most of all, she's really fun. She's kind of the mama of the group. David Schwimmer (Melman): Nervous, a hypochondriac, loyal, intelligent, and generous.

How are you like your character? Ben: Alex is comfortable in the city. When he gets into the countryside, he's not used to the quiet. I was like that growing up. Chris: It doesn't take much for me to be bored. Jada: I'm a lot of fun, but I definitely tend to take on the mother role in a lot of the circles that I'm in. David: I'm fairly tall with long eyelashes.

What is your least favorite thing about your character? Ben: The amount of hair that he has. It's a lot of hair care. It's like an hour every morning with a blow-dryer. Chris: Uh, just that's he a zebra. Jada: She could probably exercise a little bit. Not too much—just a little bit. David: His fear of heights.

What advice would you give your character? Ben: Even though we get set in our ways, change is important. Let life happen because then great new things can happen that you would never expect. Chris: I'd tell him to try to appreciate the things he has. Don't go too fast because you can miss some great things while trying to get to the next thing. Jada: I know Gloria likes to eat, which is fine. I would just tell her to make sure she's eating all the right things. David: Have a massage once a week to help you relax.

What would you want to have if you were stuck in the wilderness? Ben: Hopefully, food. And probably a couple of good books—big, thick ones. Chris: A BlackBerry, a Kindle e-book reader, an iPod, and a generator. Jada: A good book and some matches. David: The complete works of Shakespeare, food, fresh water, my girlfriends, and a limitless supply of paper.

What was your favorite line or scene from the movie? Ben: When the lead penguin says, "It's gonna take six to nine months [to fix the plane]," and Alex goes, "Sixty-nine months?" That always makes me laugh. Chris: All the [scenes] with Marty and the other zebras are rally good. Jada: My favorite scene is when Gloria falls in love with this other hippo, named Moto Moto. He asks her out and it's a really cute, flirtatious scene. David: My favorite line is "Aaaaaargh!!!!" My favorite scene is when Gloria saves Melman from falling into the volcano.

Which do you like better, the chimps or the penguins? Ben: The chimps. I've always liked monkeys a lot better. Chris: The penguins are funny. Jada: I like both. [Zelda the roving reporter: I like whoever has the best snacks.] David: Penguins!

Next year, Madagascar's penguins will star in their own TV show on Nickelodeon. We asked Jada, Ben, David, and Chris what kind of TV show their characters should have.

GLORIA "Her show would be called How to Be Fabulous, and she would show viewers how she does it," says Jada. ALEX "Alex would have a variety show," says Ben. "He'd do some singing and dancing, and then have a guest on along with one of his friends." MELMAN "In Melman's show, called What Was That?, he would play a superhero who has the power to fly and become invisible," says David. MARTY Chris says, "Marty would host his own talk show and do a monologue every night about what's going on in the world."

Finally, we have a tutorial on how to draw a penguin. The instructions say that this penguin is supposed to be Skipper, but clearly no one told this to the artist.

Chapter 6: The next morning in Washington DC. Bendy, Tommy, Uzi, Loona, V, Octavia, Wilbur, and the others (Jill, CatNap, Freddy, Chris, and Claire) got up and everyone are packing their stuff up and they head downstairs to the hotel lobby to get some breakfast before they all go out to find me, Leon, and N. When Jill, CatNap, Freddy, Chris and Claire got downstairs to the hotel lobby to get some breakfast and they saw Bendy, Tommy, Uzi, Loona, V, Octavia, and Wilbur sitting on the table eating their food. While the five of them (Jill, CatNap, Freddy, Chris, and Claire) get some breakfast they sat right next to Bendy and the others. And, Chris still feels really bad about what he did to me, Leon, and N for pranking us with a live rat and he didn't say anything, so he stayed quiet. But then Bendy, Tommy, Uzi, Loona, V, Octavia, and Wilbur told Jill, CatNap, Freddy, Chris, and Claire where me, Leon, and N are at, and they told them that the three of us are in New York City. When Bendy, Tommy, Uzi, Loona, V, Octavia, and Wilbur tell them, they were in complete shock. 0_0

Octavia: So Bendy do you guys know where Jada, Leon, and N is? Because I didn't hear because I was asleep last night.

Bendy and Loona: Yeah.

Bendy: So Leon, Jada, and N took the train and-

Loona: The train is taking them to New York City.

Octavia: 0_0

Octavia: What!?

V: But they're okay, though.

Octavia: Yeah, I hope so.

Jill: Morning guys!

Tommy: Oh, hey guys.

CatNap: So Bendy, Tommy, Uzi. Did you have a sleepover with Loona, V, Wilbur, and Octavia? And did guys get a good night sleep?

Uzi: Yeah we sure did, CatNap! ^-^

Freddy: Hey. Its okay, Uzi we'll find him.

Jill: Mhmm. Freddy's right, Uzi. Leon and Jada are my brother and sister, besides they're really protective from anyone else, and they'll protect N, no matter what.

Claire: Yeah. He still have Leon and Jada with him they'll keep an eye on him.

Uzi: Yeah! I guess you're right, Claire! ^-^

Jill: So Loona did you know guys know where Leon, Jada, and N is?

Loona: Yeah.

Bendy: Okay guys, so Leon, Jada, and N took the train and-

Jill took a deep breath and she breathes out and I know how much she means to me and Leon, because we care about her so much. So CatNap tells Bendy, Tommy, Uzi, Loona, V, Wilbur, and Octavia about what they're gonna do while they'll begin to find me, Leon, and N.

CatNap: So Bendy, Tommy, Uzi, Loona, V, Wilbur, and Octavia. What're we going to do?

Freddy: How are we going to find Leon, Jada, and N?

While CatNap and Freddy told Bendy, Tommy, Uzi, Loona, V, Octavia, and Wilbur. CatNap, Freddy, Jill, Chris, and Claire started to look at Bendy about what they're gonna do.

Bendy: ...

Bendy: I know what we're gonna do.

V: All of us are going to New York City and we're gonna go find Leon, Jada, and N.

Claire: Yeah, that's a good idea, V.

Jill: Wait! I think me, Leon, and Jada have family members in New York City.

Bendy and Tommy: Oh, yeah

Bendy: Yeah, I know what you're talking about, Jill.

Tommy: Yeah! You, Leon, and Jada's cousins lives in New York. ^-^

CatNap: Wait! Really? I didn't know you, Leon, and Jada had family members in New York!

Uzi: Alright, guys no time to sit here and chit chat!

Claire: We got three friends that we need to find.

Wilbur: Alright, guys what're guys, waiting for?

Loona: Lets hit the road to New York and find Leon, Jada, and N.

And then Bendy, Tommy, Uzi, Loona, V, Octavia, Wilbur and the others starting to get in the Kings Island van and Bendy is about to start driving so, they're adventure are still awaits them to find me, Leon, and N. So Tommy and Uzi sat in the front right next to Bendy and Loona, V, Octavia, Wilbur, and the others (Jill, CatNap, Freddy, Chris, and Claire) are sitting in the back row of the van. Bendy started to check with the others if they're buckled in or not.

Bendy: Tommy, Uzi. You guys ready go, you two buckled in and stuff?

Tommy and Uzi: Yeah.

Uzi: We're ready.

Bendy: *look behind at the others*

Bendy: You guys buckled in back there?

Loona, V, Octavia, Wilbur, Jill, CatNap, Freddy, Chris, and Claire: Yeah!

Loona: We're ready to go Bends!

Bendy: Alright, lets get going.

Uzi: Hell yeah. Lets go find our loved ones.😏

Tommy: Hang in there, Leon. I'm for you babe.

While Bendy started driving, Tommy was looking at his phone of a picture of him and his boyfriend, Leon. And him, Bendy, and Uzi, will find me, Leon, and N in no time.

Bendy: (Okay, Jada. I hope you, Leon, and N are okay I'm coming for you just hang in there, babe).

« LE PRINCE DE BEL-AIR » : QUE SONT-ILS TOUS DEVENUS 30 ANS APRÈS ?

Le tout premier épisode de la série culte était diffusé le 10 septembre 1990…

« Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped turned upside down… »

Pour beaucoup, il s’agit du générique le plus célèbre des nineties. D’ailleurs, il s’agit très certainement de l’une des séries télé les plus nineties qui soit.

Le Prince de Bel-Air ou l’histoire de Will, un ado tchatcheur des rues de West Philadelphie qui suite à une embrouille de trop avec des mauvais garçons est envoyé illico par sa mère vivre chez sa tante à l’autre bout du pays dans le très cossu quartier de Bel-Air, Los Angeles.

Là-bas s’ensuivent six saisons durant moult péripéties articulées principalement autour du décalage avec les codes sociaux et culturels de la famille Banks.

Alors certes avec le recul (nan, mais 30 ans quoi…) la mécanique n’a pas forcément toujours très bien vieilli, mais l’ambiance « feel good » reste de mise – et les blagues de très bonnes facture.

Largement donc de quoi donner envie de se demander ce qu’est devenu le crew depuis tout ce temps.

Will Smith (51 ans)

Petite vedette du rap grâce à son duo bon chic bon genre avec Jazzy Jeff (leur album He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper sorti en 1988 s’est écoulé à 3 millions d’exemplaires), à l’orée des années 90 Willard Carroll Smith Jr. n’en est pas moins endetté jusqu’au cou : non content de dépenser sans compter (genre faire fermer un magasin Gucci d’Atlanta pour que ses potes viennent se servir), le fisc vient en sus taper à sa porte pour lui réclamer 2,8 millions d’arriérés d’impôts.

Joie du mektoub, son chemin croise celui de la légende Quincy Jones (lire ci-dessous) qui décide de miser sur lui en lui confiant ce premier rôle, quand bien même Smith n’a jamais fait l’acteur de sa vie auparavant.

Hyper à l’aise face caméra, le Fresh Prince se met alors en tête de devenir « la plus grande star de la planète » en dupliquant son personnage dans des films d’action à gros budgets (Bad Boys, Independence Day, Men in Black…), non sans oublier de revenir au rap à échéances régulières – notamment avec Big Willie Style en 1997 vendu à 9 millions de copies à ce jour.

Omniprésent dans les années 2000 (I Robot, Hitch, I Am Legend…), il s’autorise brièvement de changer de registre avec le biopic de Muhammad Ali dirigé par Michael Mann qui dans un monde parfait aurait dû lui valoir l’Oscar du meilleur acteur devant Denzel Washington, puis avec le mélodrame The Pursuit of Happyness où il donne la réplique à son fils Jaden.

[Jaden qui pour info est prénommé d’après sa mère Jada, tandis que sa fille Willow est prénommée d’après lui. Maintenant vous savez.]

En 2013 les deux remettent d’ailleurs le couvert avec After Earth de M. Night Shyamalan, un film de SF qui bide tellement que ni l’un ni l’autre n’ont failli s’en remettre.

Will Smith fini toutefois par rebondir au box-office en refusant Django Unchained avec Suicide Squad (2016) et Aladdin (2019).

À la base pas forcément fan des réseaux sociaux (car pas forcément fan de la proximité engendrée avec le public), il s’est depuis reconverti en youtubeur, (voir cette séquence où il saute à l’élastique d’un hélicoptère) quand il ne rend pas visite à femme dans son émission web Red Table pour évoquer leurs problèmes conjugaux et autre histoire « d’entanglement » (coucou August Alsina).

Oh, et si cette biographie expresse est allée un peu trop vite pour vous, là voici ici rappée par le Christ.

Quincy Jones, le producteur (87 ans)

Assuré d’apparaître en majuscules dans les livres d’histoire pour avoir été le producteur historique de Michael Jackson (Off The Wall/Thriller/Bad), Quincy Jones c’est aussi et peut-être surtout une carrière débutée dans le monde du jazz dans les années 50 et qui lui vaut d’avoir son patronyme crédité sur près de 3 000 chansons !

Multi instrumentiste, il a collaboré au fil du temps avec les monuments que sont Ray Charles, Miles Davis ou encore Franck Sinatra (qui le premier l’a surnommé ‘Q’).

En 1990 il change cependant totalement de registre en fondant sa propre société de production, Quincy Jones Entertainment, avec dans la ferme intention de se lancer à la conquête des écrans.

Inspiré par la vie de Benny Medina (un exécutif de maisons de disque qui dans son enfance a vécu entre Watts et Beverly Hills), il jette ainsi les bases du Prince de Bel-Air avant d’engager Will Smith après lui avoir fait passer une audition de 10 minutes au beau milieu d’une réception.

Chauffeur de taxi du générique (lui qui n’a jamais passé son permis de conduire), depuis que l’aventure s’est terminée il refait régulièrement l’actualité, que ce soit pour avoir marié l’une de ses filles à 2Pac, publié sa biographie en 2003 dans laquelle il révèle que sa grand-mère cuisinait des rats pour le nourrir, survécu à un AVC en 2015 (son second) ou plus récemment avoir tourné dans un clip de Travis Scott et Young Thug, OUT WEST.

Toujours fringuant à l’approche de la nonantaine, il a fait l’objet d’un documentaire Netflix en 2018 tandis que l’année dernière il s’est offert un jubilé sur la scène de Paris Bercy, lui qui en 1957 était venu apprendre sur nos terres comment écrire de la musique pour instruments à cordes, là où aux États-Unis il était « très mal vu d’enseigner ce genre de chose à des noirs ».

Alfonso Ribeiro/Carlton Banks (48 ans)

Si vous vous êtes toujours demandé pourquoi dans Le Prince de Bel-Air Will Smith a choisi comme nom de scène son véritable nom, sachez qu’il a suivi là le bon conseil que lui a donné Alfonso, selon qui, si la série marchait, tout le monde allait l’appeler jusqu’à la fin de ses jours par le nom de son personnage.

L’idée était ainsi de faire d’une pierre deux coups en optant d’une part pour un blaze cool, et de l’autre en faisant de sorte que par assimilation le public se souvienne toujours de lui.

Sachant cela, impossible de ne pas se demander pourquoi diable Ribeiro ne s’est-il pas appliqué son propre conseil, lui qui se fait appeler Carlton partout où il va ?

À sa décharge, il se trouve qu’il était à l’époque persuadé que le rôle ne dépasserait pas en popularité celui qu’il avait tenu l’année de ses 13 ans dans The Tap Dance Kid, une comédie musicale jouée sur les planches de Broadway qui lui avait valu de tourner plusieurs publicités – dont une aux côtés de Michael Jackson.

Mal lui en a pris puisque de son propre aveu il est depuis stéréotypé en éternel cadet de la bourgeoisie, lui qui a pourtant vécu dans le Bronx.

Avec le temps Alfonso Ribeiro est toutefois parvenu à se renouveler en touchant à tous les domaines, qu’il s’agisse de la présentation de jeux et émission télé (ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos, Spell-Mageddon, Money Tree…), de la participation à divers télé réalités (I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, Celebrity Duets…) ou de la réalisation d’épisodes de sitcoms (All of Us, Meet the Browns, Are We There Yet?, Shake It Up…), sans oublier un peu d’acting à droite à gauche (dont un début de série avec Soulja Boy en 2010).

Fou de danse, le créateur de la fameuse « Carlton dance », ce pas inspiré par le déhanché de Courteney Cox dans la vidéo de Dancing in The Dark de Bruce Springsteen, s’est également illustré en 2014 en remportant non sans panache la 19ème édition de Danse avec les stars.

Tatyana Ali/Ashley Banks (41 ans)

Âgée de 11 ans au début de la série, la fille cadette du clan Banks s’est muée au fil des 148 épisodes en adolescente un peu rebelle-mais-pas-trop.

N’hésitant pas à pousser la chansonnette dès que le scénario lui en laissait l’occasion, c’est sans surprise qu’elle enregistre en 1998 un premier l’album intitulé Kiss The Sky. Le succès n’est toutefois pas spécialement au rendez-vous, et ce malgré la certification or du remix de son single Boy You Knock Me Out en compagnie de Will.

[Il lui faudra alors attendre 2014 pour sortir un nouveau projet, l’EP autoproduit Hello.]

En 2002 Ali ajoute une nouvelle corde à son arc en décrochant l’équivalent d’une licence à Harvard dans le domaine des « African-American Studies and Government ».

Toujours très active sur le petit écran comme sur le grand (beaucoup de direct-to-dvds, beaucoup de sitcoms), en 2008 elle s’engage en parallèle auprès de Barack Obama avec qui elle fait campagne sur les campus.

Rayon potins, en 2013 elle a admis à demi-mots avoir eu une aventure d’un soir avec Drake.

Mariée en 2016 à un professeur d’anglais, Tatyana Ali est depuis mère de deux enfants.

Karyn Parsons/Hilary Banks (53 ans)

Beaucoup plus snob que la plus snob de tes copines, et qui plus est même pas ta copine, si Hilary était clairement insupportable, grâce à Karyn Parsons elle n’en demeurait pas moins la préférée de beaucoup.

Ce n’est d’ailleurs pas pour rien que le personnage a pu être vu aux génériques d’autres séries diffusées concomitamment comme Petite Fleur et Out All Night.

La carrière d’actrice de Parsons va néanmoins vite passer à la trappe quand en 1996 la série Lush Life dont elle est respectivement coproductrice, coscénariste et covedette est annulée par la Fox après quatre petits épisodes faute d’audience.

Vue ensuite dans quelques métrages pas des plus mémorables, en 2002 elle décide de passer à autre chose et fonde Sweet Blackberry, une société de production d’animés pour enfants mettant à l’honneur des héros afro-américains méconnus de l’histoire US.

Remariée en 2003 avec le réalisateur Alexandre Rockwell rencontré sur le tournage de 13 Moons (elle avait convolé en noces une première fois à 21 ans), le couple a ensemble deux enfants.

L’année dernière Karyn Parsons a publié son premier livre pour enfants, How High the Moon, qui relate sur le parcours d’une mère célibataire au temps des lois raciales.

DJ Jazzy Jeff/Jazz (55 ans)

Moitié du DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, ce n’est faire injure à Jeffrey Allen Townes de dire qu’il n’est ni né pour jouer la comédie, ni que sans l’aide de son pote Will Smith jamais il n’aurait été engagé pour jouer le rôle du pote de Will Smith.

Toujours est-il qu’il a réussi à marquer les esprits en serrant Hilary grâce à sa poignée de main culte en « Psshhh ! », ainsi que pour s’être fréquemment fait jeter des lieux (14 fois pour être exact) par un Oncle Phil jamais à court de prétextes pour se débarrasser de lui.

Suite à la parenthèse Bel-Air, Jeff est cependant logiquement retourné à ses platines.

Invité à venir scratcher sur les albums des plus gros noms de la scène philadelphienne (les Roots, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild…), mais pas que (Eminem, les Black Eyed Peas, les Little Brother, Mac Miller…), entre ses mixtapes et ses soirées, il prend le temps de sortir deux albums solo de très bonne facture : The Magnificent en 2002 et The Return of the Magnificent en 2007 qui contient notamment un interlude bien golri avec Willou (déso y’a pas de lien).

Proposé en perso dans le jeu vidéo DJ Hero en 2009, Jazzy Jeff continue depuis d’arpenter inlassablement clubs et salles de concert de par le monde.

Joseph Marcell/Geoffrey Butler (71 ans)

Employé de maison le plus pince sans rire de Bel-Air, outre le fait d’avoir délivré parmi les meilleures punchlines du show, Geoffrey le Majordome (« butler » signifie réellement « majordome ») incarnait bien souvent la voix de la raison au sein d’une famille Banks aux manières pas toujours des plus aristocratiques.

Tout comme son personnage qui la fin de la sixième saison s’en allait rejoindre son fils à Londres, le très british Joseph Marcell est revenu sur ses terres.

Acteur de théâtre de formation, il s’est fait voir dans différentes pièces (dont Le Roi Lear de Shakespeare) ainsi que dans plusieurs soap operas anglais (The Bold and the Beautiful, EastEnders…).

Sa dernière apparition remonte à la série Le garçon qui dompta le vent produite par Netflix en 2019.

Janet Hubert/Vivian Banks (64 ans)

La toute première Tante Vivian de la série, et entre nous la meilleure.

Congédiée à la fin de la saison 3 pour « différences créatives », c’est peu dire qu’elle n’est pas partie en bons termes avec une partie du casting, Will Smith en tête qui lui reprochait son égo démesuré – « Elle aurait voulu que la série s’appelle ‘Tante Viv’ de Bel-Air’ » dans le texte.

Ayant plutôt mal pris la chose, Hubert revient régulièrement sur le sujet que ce soit à dans la presse (en 2011 elle traitait Smith « de trouduc’ et d’égoïste » au micro de TMZ), dans ses mémoires publiées en 2009 (Perfection Is Not a Sitcom Mom) ou plus récemment sur Facebook lorsqu’en 2017 elle s’en est pris à ses anciens petits camarades qui se sont réunis sans elle.

Bisbilles mises à part, elle a été aperçue ensuite dans bon nombre de séries télé comme NYPD Blue, Friends ou encore depuis 2018 dans l’éternel General Hospital (56 saisons au compteur).

Voix dans Grand Theft Auto 5 en 2013, Janet Hurbert consacre également son temps à combattre l’ostéoporose, une maladie osseuse dont elle est atteinte, en tant qu’ambassadrice de la National Osteoporosis Foundation.

Daphne Maxwell Reid/Vivian Banks (72 ans)

Nouvelle venue à l’entame de la saison 4, Reid a repris le rôle de Tante Vivian.

Et plutôt que de faire comme si de rien était, les personnages s’en sont gentiment amusés que ce soit Will qui dans le premier épisode se demande « Qui joue la mère cette année ? » ou Jazz qui lorsqu’il tombe sur elle remarque « qu’il y a quelque chose de différent chez elle ».

Discrète depuis, Reid a donné la réplique aux jumelles Tia et Tamera Mowrydans dans Sister, Sister en 1996, puis à la rappeuse Eve dans sa série du même nom de 2003 à 2006.

Mariée à l’acteur télé Tim Reid, elle possédait en sa compagnie et jusqu’en 2014 son propre studio de cinéma.

James Avery/Philip Banks (décédé à 68 ans)

Patriarche aux faux-airs de Suge Knight, en parallèle du Prince de Bel-Air Oncle Phil s’est fait entendre dans Les Tortues Ninjas où il a doublé de 1987 à 1993 le méchant Shredder.

Régulièrement sollicité pour sa voix bien particulière (War Machine dans Iron Man et Spider-Man, Aladin…), sans nécessairement retrouver de rôle du même acabit, il a tourné à la chaîne avec pas loin de 80 rôles à son actif (dont des apparitions dans les séries That ’70s Show, Star Trek: Enterprise et Grey’s Anatomy).

Victime en 2013 de problèmes cardiaques, sa disparition a énormément touché ses anciens comparses avec qui il était resté très proche au fil du temps.

Tous lui ont rendu publiquement hommage avec au premier rang Will Smith qui a déclaré que « James Avery lui a transmis parmi ses plus grandes leçons de vie ». Alfonso Ribeiro a quant à lui a tweeté qu’il était comme « un second père pour lui ».

5 moments de la pop culture qui m'ont marquée en 2022.

La claque: Considéré comme la gifle qui a été entendue dans le monde entier, Will Smith giflant Chris Rock lors de la cérémonie des Oscars de 2022 est un événement que personne n'avait vu venir. La gravité de l'incident a été immédiate, les utilisateurs des réseaux sociaux s'emparent de l'événement et créent de nombreux memes. Bien que l'agression physique soit quelque chose dont il ne faut pas en rire, il est indéniable que cet événement choquant s'est imposé comme l'un des événements les plus mémorables de l'année. Inconcevable, mais vrai : Will Smith a giflé l’animateur des Oscars Chris Rock devant un public mondial en mars 2022. « The Slap » était un événement culturel pop si massif qu’il a inspiré un déluge de pièces de réflexion et un traitement en plusieurs étapes – du choc que le saint Smith (qui a remporté le meilleur acteur peu de temps après) allait craquer, au déni (était-il mis en scène?), à beaucoup d’indignation (y compris de Judd Apatow, qui a réagi de façon excessive sur Twitter, pontifiant que Smith « aurait pu tuer » Rock). Smith a ensuite lancé une tournée d’excuses pour s’être emporté contre Rock à cause de sa blague sur la calvitie de Jada Pinkett Smith (Rock a dit qu’il ne savait pas qu’elle avait de l’alopécie). Il y a eu une première déclaration, puis un confessionnal sur YouTube en juillet, et encore une autre référence ces dernières semaines, dans The Daily Show With Trevor Noah : « En fin de compte, je l’ai perdu, vous savez », a dit Smith. « Je suppose… on ne sait jamais ce que vit quelqu’un. »

Pete Davidson et LA Kardashian? : Pour le meilleur ou pour le pire, Kim Kardashian et Pete Davidson étaient sans doute le couple de 2022. Rebondissant de Kanye West (qui a décidément fourni certains des pires moments culturels pop de 2022), Kardashian a trouvé l’amour avec l’éternel It Boyfriend. Ils étaient improbables : Kardashian, la Marilyn Monroe moderne, tomber pour Davidson, avec son Saturday Night live medium ugly style? Mais ils sont allés très très fort dans les réseaux sociaux, et pas seulement. Pete s’engage avec des tatouages de plus en plus absurdes comme:«Ma femme est avocate » et une marque « Kim ». L’Histoire s’est intensifiée lorsque des messages ont fuité montrant Davidson West dans la défense de Kardashian, bien que « Je suis au lit avec votre femme » était à peine désescalade.En septembre, Kardashian et Davidson ont fait une apparition très innatendue et immédiatement controversée au grand Met Gala , où Kardashian a mis au jour la robe iconique et recouverte de cristaux que Monroe portait pour chanter « Joyeux anniversaire » au président John F. Kennedy en 1962. Un débat enflammé s’ensuivit au sujet du droit de porter des vêtements d’archives et l’aveu de Kardashian qu’elle adhérait à un régime strict pour entrer dans la robe. Mais oh non! surprenant! Le couple n’a pas tenu l’année, se séparant en août.

Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard: TikTok était le nouveau CourtTV en termes de suivi du procès dans lequel Johnny Depp accusait sa  ex femme Amber Heard de diffamation contre lui dans un 2018 Washington Post éditorial avec un arti le en l’accusant de violen eces conjugales. Le procès en Virginie a été un cirque et un « cloaque », comme l’a écrit Raven Smith de Vogue, qui a déclenché une vague de misogynie en ligne de la part des fans de Depp. Le verdict de culpabilité prononcé en juin était partagé, ordonnant à Heard de payer à Depp 15 millions de dollars en dommages et intérêts, tout en accordant à Heard 2 millions de dollars. La décision tendait vers Depp, mais il n’y avait vraiment pas de gagnants. 

Twitter et Elon Musk: RIP Twitter, la plateforme sociale basée sur les mots aimée par les écrivains (mais aussi D*nald Tr*mp). crée 2006, Twitter a été apparemment vidé de sa substance en 2022, lorsque le méga troll Elon Musk l’a acheté pour 44 milliards de dollars en avril, enhardissant et saluant les tweeters toxiques comme Trump et Kanye West sous le nom déformé de « liberté d’expression ». Au cours des mois qui ont suivi, Musk s’est lancé dans une « frénésie de congédiement », notamment en épuisant le service juridique de l’entreprise et en démantelant un comité consultatif sur les questions de sécurité. Twitter avait 16 ans et on se souviendra des bons moments et du harcèlement gratuit. 

Bella Hadid et la robe Coperni: 2022 était l’année où Bella Hadid a gagné sa place dans le temple de la renommée des mannequins. Elle a marché 19 défilés à la Paris fashion week, a été nommée mannequin de l’année aux British Fashion Awards et sa capacité à augmenter les profits d’une marque de mode (elle a ajouté 90 % à la valeur monétaire prévue pour Jil Sander en marchant pour le défilé) surnommée « l’effet Bella » par la plateforme de marketing d’influence Lefty. Cependant, il y eut un moment qui lui valut vraiment sa place parmi les grands. Oui, je parle de quand Bella, pratiquement nue, s’est baladée au milieu de la passerelle de Coperni pour se faire repeindre de fibres liquides. Le plus surprenant ? Elle est partie avec une superbe robe blanche à une épaule qui était assez conséquente pour être lavée. Selon la WWD (Women’s Wear Daily) , dans les 48 heures qui ont suivi l’émission, l’impact médiatique et  je dirais même culturel de l’événement a été évalué à 26,3 millions de dollars, dont 20,9 millions de dollars attribués aux médias sociaux. Pour moi, Bella Hadid est en train de devenir LA mannequin de notre décennie.
