Maine Flag Redesigns

Over the last few days, I've been working on some redesigns for the Maine state flag since the current flag isn't the best, and the one from 1901 has some issues in being tied to, how shall we say… less than great causes. With that in mind, here are some concepts I made!

DESIGN ONE

My first design is one I came up with several months ago, but I never put it together until now. This flag is a simple tricolor of green, buff, and blue. The green represents pine trees and the forests, the buff the beaches and coastline, and the blue the blueberries as well as the lakes within and ocean beyond the state. (By the way, these three colors were all sampled directly from the simplified version of the 1901 flag.) In the center, a lobster is placed as the main symbol on the flag.

DESIGN TWO

The second design sees a buff-colored star placed between two columns of solid blue and green, with a third column of red placed to the right. The star represents the North Star, and the red still represents lobsters, despite no longer bearing such a shape.

DESIGN THREE

This third design creates an oblique division between green and blue, representing a vague depiction of Maine's coastline progression, the star has been moved to the upper left, and a lobster has been placed in the bottom right, replacing the red triangle that once occupied that territory.

DESIGN FOUR

The fourth design starts with the same green and blue triangles, but here, the lobster is holding the North Star and both are placed in the center of the flag. Over to the side, stripes representing a lighthouse (specifically the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse) are placed to add some distinctness to the flag. The twenty-three stripes represent Maine's entry as the twenty-third state in the union.

DESIGN FIVE

This fifth design returns to the three bar idea of the second design, though here each bar has far more detail than the first version. The leftmost bar is green with a blue circle cut out of it, this circle representing blueberries. The middle bar is blue with the lobster holding a star placed in it. The rightmost bar again is composed of stripes representing a lighthouse, though here just five stripes. I attempted to make this design with sixteen stripes representing the counties of Maine, though no matter the arrangement, it simply didn't look as nice as this one with five stripes, so I ended up sticking with that.

DESIGN SIX

My sixth design seeks to add something to represent those sixteen counties, and so the lighthouse segment has been repurposed as a border, a lot in the way the Prince Edward Island flag has. The rest of the sixth design is borrowed from the fourth, with the green & blue slope and the lobster holding a star in the center.

Amongst these designs, I think the first and sixth stand out just a bit as my favorites, but feel free to comment with any thoughts you may have on any of these designs!
