i feel like percy is the person that people bring with them when they need to go somewhere or do something potentially dangerous. or more realistically, he’s the one who people’s loved ones tell them to take with. it just makes people feel better knowing percy is there. you know what i mean?
sally has a meeting with someone who sounds a bit weird (and paul can’t go)? paul tells her to bring percy.
paul needs to go to a really sketchy part of town? sally asks him to bring percy
piper got a weird anonymous note and needs to go meet them at a location? annabeth tells her to bring percy
leo has to go get some magic machine part from a really shady dealer? piper tells him to bring percy
frank has to go on an unofficial quest to investigate some shady legion history, and hazel has to stay with camp? hazel tells him to bring percy
and it’s NOT because any of these people can’t take care of themselves. they are all strong and brave and badass, and can handle anything. but for one, percy is intimidating as hell. his “wolf stare” sends literal gangs running the other way. you can avoid conflict before it even happens, because no one is messing with percy. and second, percy just makes you feel safe. his presence is comforting. not only has he been through all the demigod-hero-world-saving shit, and is powerful as hell, but he also grew up in new york city. he can handle pretty much any situation. plus he’s super sweet and funny, and you can always count on him to make you laugh and decrease your anxiety. and he’s always got your back. he takes care of the people he loves.
he’s just the best company. for so many reasons.
when in doubt, bring percy

sally and percy were always each other’s constants, they became a bit more distant once percy found out he was a demigod, but they were still each others firsts
then estelle was born
percy loves estelle so much, so much it physically hurts
but he sees estelle and how happy she is, how she had a mom that doesnt work the night shift nearly every night and instead is home nearly all the time, and she has a dad that’s present and there and is safe and percy is so so happy that she has what he never did
but at the same time he knows thats the exact reason why it hurts
estelle has what percys wanted his whole life
and now estelle has the only thing percy had his whole life
being his mothers first and top priority
he knows why, he understands why, estelle is a baby and needs to be cared for constantly, and percys nearly 18 and doesnt need his mom all the time anymore
but it hurts because all the food is no longer blue, it hurts because he sees estelle grow up and get help, it hurts because he sees estelle with the life he always wanted, but knows he will never had
and it hurts because hes no longer his mother’s constant.
sally has paul now, she has paul to help her through her issues and she has a child that doesnt get expelled from every school shes been in
and percy has his family. but its not the same. annabeth has always been there, but she doesnt understand, thalia has been through the same childhood as percy but she doesnt know what its like to watch the bad go to good in the same household, grover has always listened but he just doesnt understand
because hes happy estelle has the life he always wanted. hes glad his mother has the life she always wanted. but hes not in that life. because hes moving out soon. and hes no longer his mothers son, at least not in the way he was before

You know that scene in The Incredibles where they finally let Dash try out for sports and during his race the family is all shouting for him to slow down and then speed up so as not to show his powers. That’s how I imagine Sally and Paul are with Percy’s competitive swimming. Like Sally with Estelle on her hip and Paul with his face painted and Annabeth with a Go Percy sign just shouting from the stands like, “Too fast! Breathe above the water, Percy! Okay! Now you can speed up! YEAH PERCY! WHOOO!”

imagine telling 12 year old percy, who’d just been told he’s being blamed for literally starting a third world war right after his mother dematerialized right in front of him, who feels so utterly alone in this new world (which isn’t very foreign to him, because it’s not like he felt he belonged in the human world), that one day, he’d be cozied up in his childhood apartment with his mother and step dad who treats him like his own, eating a home cooked meal about to go off to college with his long-term girlfriend.
imagine the look on 12 year old percy’s face when he’s told that one day, he’ll have a place where he finally belongs.

the chb counselors would pull frank and hazel into their little group SO quickly once they meet them after the war
this is a group of people who remember little twelve year old percy walking around chb with the widest eyes and naïveté. they've heard his snarky comments, have seen him stand up to bullies, they watched him panic searching for his closest friends, they've witnessed his breakdowns and tears during the summers where he just couldn't do it anymore.
everyone else at the camp has a view of percy as another god, or as an untouchable being. they only see him for the hero he is, but they don't see the real him.
frank and hazel, however, got to see the real percy on their quest. they saw all his little quirks, heard every quip and sarcastic comment, watched him freak out over other demigods and legacies getting hurt, and they saw how percy is so much more than just a hero.
not saying that the rest of the seven wouldn't all be welcomed by the chb head counselors, but frank and hazel would immediately just click with all of them because of their connection to percy. there's a small group of people who know the true him, and they're part of that, and it just brings them into this little special group. they'd be invited to the sleepovers and told every single embarrassing story about percy while he just groans and attempts to commit murder by smothering clarisse with a pillow. frank and hazel would get introduced to sally and paul and just be immediately folded into their little family.
frank and clarisse would become an inseparable duo. hazel and chris would become so close, not just because their partners are siblings, but also i think they'd connect on their shared "being trapped somewhere for an unknown amount of time after being manipulated by someone i cared about" experiences. travis and connor would ADORE frank, i think for some reason pollux and hazel would get along really well. there would just be an automatic camaraderie between all of them so quickly.
yes, nico is the go-between for the camps, but i think frank and hazel would just automatically be so completely and utterly trusted by the entirety of camp half-blood purely because percy completely and utterly trusts them.

Post-tartarus Percy and Annabeth and even post tartarus Nico weren't written well at all. Tartarus makes them manic, always on edge, jumpy. This is PTSD and it doesn't just go away. Not to mention, they lost Bob and Damasen.
Yes, sure, one could argue there weren't many opportunities for Rick to explore how Tartarus changed Percy in Heroes of Olympus series. There still should have been mentions.
Rick focused on Bob and Damasen part for a bit and then never again. It's like after Tartarus arc, Percy and Annabeth were back to being themselves, which is such a character assassination. Here's what I think are a few ways Tartarus changed Percy and Annabeth and even Nico in:
PART 1-PERCY
Percy becomes hypervigilant at all times.
He can barely sleep, and whenever he does, he is always affected by terrible nightmares.
He feels extremely guilty about not being able to save Bob and Damasen and hence is now extremely protective of his other friends and family.
He no longer feels at all safe in his cabin and avoids it since Hera abducting him from there led to his whole thing.
He spends large amounts of time away from the camp.
Percy only ever feels truly safe by the sea .
Percy knows how delicate Sally and Paul act around him, and he hates it and hates himself for it. They don't say a word even when him screaming wakes them up. In fact, they just sit beside him, holding his hand and letting him cry or scream.
Poseidon also makes his own protective tendencies known, and when Percy gets too manic to stay anywhere, he whisks him away to Atlantis to calm him.
Every night, Percy finds a place to look at the stars and repeat the same message : Bob says hello.
He becomes an entirely different person when attacked when fighting monsters. A killing machine. It scares most people especially Annabeth.
Percy becomes a lot more aloof and likes being by himself (so he doesn't have to bear the responsibility for protecting someone other than him for a while)
He becomes a bit more pensive and talks less than usual.
He hates his own power but doesn't shy away from using it in dangerous situations. But this leaves him with a long internal struggle.
He begins to think of himself as monstrous.
He can't feel at ease without feeling Riptide in his grasp.
Somedays the nightmares the memories get so worse that he has to make himself bleed to take the worst of it away.
He becomes skeptical of most things: people, and food and objects.
Everyone makes sure not to bring Calypso in the same room as him lest he kill her then and there. It takes him a long time to forgive her.
Percy is now so good at sensing monsters that he is always ten steps ahead of everyone.
The worst of it is Percy's constant need to fight something. He spars with multiple strong opponents to at least make it a bit challenging for him. It makes him feel like Ares, and he hates it.
Percy's first true genuine smile is when he finds out he is going to have a baby sister.
Will cover Annabeth's and then Nico's in the next parts. This is enough ptsd for all of us for one day.

What ever you do don't think about Percy reading Estelle a little kid version of 'The Odyssey' because that's what Sally read to him but he doesn't want to scare her. Don't imagine Sally looking on with guilt in her eyes cus she HAD to read him the real one so he knew what to expect. Don't think about Sally looking down on her little girl with tears in her eyes cus she doesn't need to worry about snakes in her bed or teachers being Cyclopes. Don't think of Sally seeing Estelle with Paul and having to leave the room cus when Percy was that age they had Gabe. Don't think of the unimaginable guilt that Sally must feel for being relieved that Estelle's biggest battle at 16, is her Dad being her teacher. And whatever you do don't think about Percy feeling like an outsider in his own family even though he gets constantly reassured that he's part of it and loved.
#percy jackson#percy jackon and the olympians#sally jackson#estelle blofis#paul blofis#teenage estelle making a comment about how blue food is for babies and Percy and Sally stopping cus to her its a juvenile thing but to them#it was a way to rebel against their abusive husband/stepdad.#camp half blood#perseus jackson#heroes of olympus#rick riordan#dont imagine Percy looking across the way at Sally Paul and Estelle play at the park and not going over cus he hed hate to ruin it with a#monster attack (theirs no monsters around that he can see but what if? he cant let his sister be harmed by them too)#pjo hoo toa#pjo#pjo series#theirs a Reddit abour this person that got to go on a overnight trip for school and their sleeping bag was a blanket tied up with rope.#their pjs were old sweats. their tooth paste was in bagie instead of a travel size. cus that all they could afford and they got bullied but#it was ok cus they got to go on the trip. but in the end the trip kinda sucked cus they didn't get to do what they wanted but they got to g#so it wasn't all bad. but afew years later after their family came into some money their little sibling got to go on the trip but they got#all new rhings for the trip. new clothes new sleeping bag a suit case. travel size products etc and while the other sibling get it its just#they're upset that they didnt get that. they know WHY they didnt but their still upset.#or that one episode of The Goid Place where elenor doesn't believe her mom is a good mom now cus she wanted a good mom but all she got was#shitty mom and if her mom had the ability to change she could have changed all along she just didnt.#that vibe but make it Percy Jackson (not to say sally was wrong she did what she could to make sure percy was prepared she just... doesn't#have to do that with Estelle that its kinda heart breaking cus she would have LOVED to not have had to prepare Percy but life sucks)

I understand how, from an angst perspective, the whole “Percy will never really be apart of the Blofis family” is an interesting idea but it’s also such?? Bullshit? Like what do you mean? He calls Paul his dad? That’s his family? Go? Fuck yourself?

It's Sally Jackson-Blofis
When Sally Jackson gets married to Paul she hyphenates her name. She becomes Sally Jackson-Blofis. She doesn't do it because she feels any sort of way about the name Jackson or Blofis, nor does she keep Jackson for her family's sake. She does it for Percy. Percy who was the only good thing in her life for so long. The kid she had when she was too young, too naive, too unprepared who never made her feel like a failure. The kid who looked at her with stars in his eyes, who she fought the universe to have. Her sweet, loyal Perseus Jackson. Jackson. She couldn't give up the name she gave him. It was her way of showing him that even if she may have started a new chapter in her life, it didn't erase the one that came before it. A reminder that before she was Paul's wife, she was Percy's mother. She would always be Percy's mom, a fact that she was so grateful for, and she would never let Percy think otherwise for a minute. And when Estelle is born Paul signs a birth certificate that reads Estelle Jackson-Blofis with a smile.

I’ve seen someone say that Sally was selfish and inconsiderate for telling Percy they need his room for Estelle???

Potentially controversial opinion (that’s probably not as serious as I’m making it):
I’ve grown to hate whenever people say something along the lines of Percy never being a part of the Blofis family.
“Percy will watch Estelle grow up with Sally and Paul and know that he’ll never truly be a part of their family” WRONG
“Of course Percy will step aside and let Sally focus on being a mom to Estelle” WRONG
“He’ll always be an outsider” WRONG
Last name does not determine family. Just because he’s not a Blofis does not mean he’s not just as much a part of that family as anyone else.
And please fuck off the with idea of Percy stepping aside so Sally can focus on Estelle. News flash: parents can simultaneously be a parent to more than one child, even with large age gaps. It’s sacrilege to say that our Queen Sally would ever choose between her babies. She is an amazing mother to BOTH of them.
Of course Paul would feel types of love for Estelle and Percy, but different doesn’t mean less. Paul has always and will always love Percy.
Percy will always know he’s different and sure, in some moments that may make him feel like a bit of an outsider. But those moments will be fleeting because Sally and Paul would never exclude him. To suggest that they would is spitting in the face of kids with a step-parent and half sibling(s) that love them. It’s also spitting on all of the parents that have a second child with a different parent than their first.

Percy and Estelle
In "Catcher in the Rye" (JD Salinger), there's this one scene in the book where the protagonist (Holden) is talking to his little sister. His sister is much younger than him, and he is telling her that he's going to leave and never come back. He doesn't tell her because he wants her to convince him to stop, he tells her because she's the only person he wants to say goodbye to. And though it isn't his intent, by doing this he basically puts his survival in her hands. She's the only one he tells, so she's the only one who can save him.
I don't like Catcher in the Rye. I don't know what that scene is "supposed" to mean and I think it's truly awful that Holden puts the burden of his survival on a childs shoulders. But here's what I do like about it.
In the book, Holden's sister doesn't see anything wrong with what is happening because in her mind she and her brother are equals. Even though he's older than her and clearly has been through it she doesn't look up to or down on him Of course her brother would tell her his secrets and plans. And Holden, he trusts her not to belittle him, not to try and control him or tell him what he's thinking or feeling is wrong. She accepts him for who he is, and that is something he has desperately been searching for and unable to find in the adult world. Despite the differences in their age they respect each other enough to react honestly to each other.
I kind of want Percy and Estelle's relationship to be like that. I want him to find comfort in the childish innocent no bullshit attitude kids can have. I want her to remind him it's okay to be childish sometimes and to find joy in simple things. I want her to see the hurt in him and even though she doesn't understand it she knows it's there because children can just see these things and be there for him in silent and childish ways. Sharing her crackers with him and giving him her teddy bear.
I want to see her try and help him as his equal, because she's too young to see the difference between a child and and adult and to her Percy isn't an adult. He's just her brother. I want him to see her and realize he can't withdraw from this world because she's in it and for her gentility to remind him that he isn't the monster he thinks himself to be. And from her maybe he can believe it, because she has no reason to lie to him like all the other adults in his life do.
I think sibling relationships can be really powerful because your sibling is your equal and they know you in ways no one else does and I think that's incredibly special and I want Percy to have someone that he doesn't feel beholden to and doesn't have to act a certain way around. I think that could be a really healing thing for him.

anyone have any headcanons about percy interacting with his step-grandparents (paul’s parents)?
the thought of him having incredibly normal loving grandparents for the first time in his life and them having no idea their step-grandson is half-god is such a fun idea to me
they try to bond with him by taking him out fishing once and sally has to make something up about why he can’t reel up a fish without crying

If you thought I was done posting PJO content for the day, you were wrong. 😂
In honor of the Solstice, and of the show dropping, here's the fic I wrote for the PJO Winter Solstice 2023 Fic Exchange!
It's heavy on the Percy & Sally bonding, which feels very appropriate given all the incoherent screeching I did about the perfection that is their relationship while I was watching the show last night. 💀
Hope you enjoy, dear ones!
