I've seen some fair share of fanart where Percy is covered with Tattoos.

If Sally allowed it these are the tattoos I think Percy would get

Fire or hammer or a mix. Something of that sort for Charles Beckendorf. The hero who was never supposed to die

Stars, a constellation one of Zoe Nightshades. For failing her when he was the first guy she trusted in millennials.

A toy that Bianca had picked up with a skull, maybe some black or with the words "I promised". For the girl who never got to know her heritage and the boy who lost himself with his sister.

Flowers, or maybe a mirror covered in some. For Selina Beauregard, the girl who died a hero.

A bow and arrow or maybe a falling bridge, for Micheal Yew who fell as the Percy destroyed the bridge.

And then maybe something that symbolizes rebellion against the Gods. Something for himself and the sympathy for the ones who went against the Gods when they were abandoned and hurt.

The sky, for Bob, small Bob and Damasen who will one day see it again.

Lightening, one with the symbol of both camp half-blood and SPQR, for the friend who belonged to both. Someone for whom Percy would be proud to wear the symbol of Lightening.

It’s kind of funny because statistically, there is a 100% escape rate of demigods from Tartarus. If you count gods and titans, there’s either a 90% or a 92% escape rate (depending on whether you subscribe to all six of Kronos’s kids freed the cyclops and hundred hand ones or just the three gods). This is all based on people who willingly went there and attempted an escape (or who lived there and attempted to escape in Damasen’s case). So this doesn’t even take into account that monsters die, return to Tartarus, and escape all the time.

So we have: Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Demeter, Hestia, Nico (2x), Percy, Annabeth, Bob/Iapetus, Damasen, Apollo (sort of) and Will who have all been. That is 14 instances and the only one who didn’t make it out is Damasen who we could probably lop in with the regular Tartarus denizens who didn’t willingly go there. In that case, it becomes a 100% escape rate all around.

Just breaking down the demigods that went and made it:

Percy Jackson - extremely powerful godly powers, very good swordsman

Annabeth Chase - does not have offensive godly powers, but she’s an accomplished strategist and talented with weapons

Nico di Angelo - extremely powerful godly powers, very good swordsman, was not in a great headspace the first time, had a buddy the second time so that was a lot better for him

Will Solace - very powerful healer and also has plague powers, brought zero weapons

They all have various different skill sets and I think are a decent sample of the different types of demigods Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter might have to offer.

So statistically, a demigod’s odds are pretty good if they want to pop down there for a quick visit and then get out. That exotic tour destinations thing might work out. Nyx might need to start advertising.

Post-tartarus Percy and Annabeth and even post tartarus Nico weren't written well at all. Tartarus makes them manic, always on edge, jumpy. This is PTSD and it doesn't just go away. Not to mention, they lost Bob and Damasen.

Yes, sure, one could argue there weren't many opportunities for Rick to explore how Tartarus changed Percy in Heroes of Olympus series. There still should have been mentions.

Rick focused on Bob and Damasen part for a bit and then never again. It's like after Tartarus arc, Percy and Annabeth were back to being themselves, which is such a character assassination. Here's what I think are a few ways Tartarus changed Percy and Annabeth and even Nico in:

PART 1-PERCY

Percy becomes hypervigilant at all times.

He can barely sleep, and whenever he does, he is always affected by terrible nightmares.

He feels extremely guilty about not being able to save Bob and Damasen and hence is now extremely protective of his other friends and family.

He no longer feels at all safe in his cabin and avoids it since Hera abducting him from there led to his whole thing.

He spends large amounts of time away from the camp.

Percy only ever feels truly safe by the sea .

Percy knows how delicate Sally and Paul act around him, and he hates it and hates himself for it. They don't say a word even when him screaming wakes them up. In fact, they just sit beside him, holding his hand and letting him cry or scream.

Poseidon also makes his own protective tendencies known, and when Percy gets too manic to stay anywhere, he whisks him away to Atlantis to calm him.

Every night, Percy finds a place to look at the stars and repeat the same message : Bob says hello.

He becomes an entirely different person when attacked when fighting monsters. A killing machine. It scares most people especially Annabeth.

Percy becomes a lot more aloof and likes being by himself (so he doesn't have to bear the responsibility for protecting someone other than him for a while)

He becomes a bit more pensive and talks less than usual.

He hates his own power but doesn't shy away from using it in dangerous situations. But this leaves him with a long internal struggle.

He begins to think of himself as monstrous.

He can't feel at ease without feeling Riptide in his grasp.

Somedays the nightmares the memories get so worse that he has to make himself bleed to take the worst of it away.

He becomes skeptical of most things: people, and food and objects.

Everyone makes sure not to bring Calypso in the same room as him lest he kill her then and there. It takes him a long time to forgive her.

Percy is now so good at sensing monsters that he is always ten steps ahead of everyone.

The worst of it is Percy's constant need to fight something. He spars with multiple strong opponents to at least make it a bit challenging for him. It makes him feel like Ares, and he hates it.

Percy's first true genuine smile is when he finds out he is going to have a baby sister.

Will cover Annabeth's and then Nico's in the next parts. This is enough ptsd for all of us for one day.

Part 1

Blue eyes met worried dark ones. Instantly, he heard Nico's voice, but he couldn't make out what he said. Will tried to pinpoint where all of the pain was coming from, but everything just felt wrong. It took much of his willpower to focus on his surroundings, well those outside of the beautiful dark-haired boy we had woken up to.

The first thing he noticed was that he wasn't in the infirmary. While it made the instinct to not look for his older brother whom he knew wouldn't be there easy to ignore, it also made him feel uneasy. Where were they? How had they gotten here?

"-olace. Will!" Nico's accented voice cut through his thoughts. A cold hand holding tightly to his overheating one.

"You sound like an angel." Will wasn't sure why his mouth didn't get the memo that admiring Nico in dire situations normally stays in his thoughts, but before he could try to form any coherent way of "taking it back" Nico's cheeks tinted pink, and suddenly it was well worth it.

"Don't think compliments and flattery are going to save your ass." The pale boy scowled, though it was hardly as affective as it should have been. "Honestly, what the Hades were you thinking?"

Will tried to filter through his brain for any recollection of what Nico could be referring to, but it seemed his brain still hadn't caught up with the present. He was happy to be able to lift his hand to brush against Nico's cheek with confused eyes. "I don't understand. Where are we? What happened?"

Nico seemed to tense up and let out a quiet sigh. "We're still in Tartarus, Will. Right now, we are in the hut that belongs to Damasen. Small Bob brought us here." Will nodded and bit the inside of his cheek.

“Is he- is he around?” Will couldn't help but wince at how weak and pathetic his voice sounded. He was sure Nico noticed, but his boyfriend didn't say a word about it. “Damasen went out to find something that may help you. I fed you some ambrosia earlier..Will, I'm sorry. Shit, if I paid more atten-”

The blonde leaned up (much to the protest of his body) and grabbed Nico by the boy's aviator jacket and pulled him in for a kiss. It was short and sweet, but exactly what they both needed. “It's alright, Nico. I'd do anything for you.” Even if he couldn't exactly remember what happened, he could piece things together. After all, he wasn't stupid. Waking up in the hut of someone who was said to help with healing, Nico's worried eyes, ambrosia, Lee, all of it fell into place. Will had taken a near-fatal blow for Nico…and he would do it again in a heartbeat.

“If anything, I should be the one apologizing to you. I know how much you've lost people and I-”

“William Andrew Solace, if you apologize for saving my life so help me.” Nico was looking at the ground, shaking his head. His voice was filled with fond exasperation. “What am I going to do with you?”

“You could take care of me? Nurse me back to health?” Will could feel his cheeks heating up. Before this trip, it was something he would have never mentioned. Will Solace was not someone who got taken care of. Will Solace took care of others. Will Solace smiled through the pain. Will Solace didn't allow himself to break down or cry. Will Solace had to be a ray of sunshine in everyone's life. Will Solace had no darkness inside of him…

Or did he? Ever since his meeting with the goddess Persephone, Will couldn't help but think of all the times he so desperately wanted to cry for his big brothers. The hatred he felt towards Percy for months after the Battle of Manhattan, despite knowing it wasn't his fault. (He only didn't let Will look for Michael, but it's fine. Will has accepted it.) All of the times he felt like breaking under the pressure of being the perfect older brother and head counselor.

The truth was that Will Solace did have darkness inside of him - it was just hidden by the overwhelming light. Trust is a two-way road, and if he wants Nico to give him trust, he needs to show that he trusts Nico in return. Will wants to show Nico his darkness. He wants to allow himself to be cared for once again. It's a revelation that shocks him more than probably anything else so far on this trip, though it's not over yet. They still have to find Bob the Titan.

“Yeah, I'll take care of you.” Nico's voice is so soft that Will almost misses it, but he doesn't miss the comforting squeeze the cold hand in his warm one brings.

“Nico, can I tell you about my older brothers?”

“Go ahead, Will. We have a little time to rest.” Those soft brown eyes looked at him with such understanding and love that Will felt things were gonna be alright for the first time in a while.

Prologue

Gaia PoV

AGH I can't believe it; how can I be defeated by those demigods? I should have waited to regain my full power. These demigods are foolish enough to think that these burns can destroy me. I am the Earth itself, I will be back.

Just as I keep thinking to myself, suddenly a man came up with the shadows inside my consciousness. He has shoulder-length black hair, eyes that have no pupils, wears a black suit, his skin is pure black, and he wears a mischievous smile.

"Long time no see, dear sister.  I know that you brainwash my dear wife and brother to go after little kids and then you have the nerve to kidnap my son Thanatos. You foolishly think that you can get away from this. What happened to you sis, I thought your main goal in life was to protect those that live under you, but now you become someone you hate. No matter I will have my vengeance on you for hurting my family. I will seal you into a pure-hearted demigod, a demigod who doesn't have a malicious bone in her body, a child of Demeter if you will. Btw I brought our eldest sibling with us” The shadowed man says, or should I say my troublesome elder brother, Erebus. Right next to Erebus is a teenage girl with long red hair, green eyes, freckles across her nose, white pants, and a blue t-shirt with paint strains all around it.

"Hello Gaia, it's me Ananke and Chrones, but my mortal friends just call me Rachael, Rachael Elizabeth Dare. Now you be wondering is how I can be two primordials, you can say I'm a fusion, anyway, that's not what is important. I'm going to help my dear brother Erebus to punish you for what you did to mortals and for brainwashing our siblings to do your bidding. To be honest, you had it coming for hurting innocents and for being a bitch for the past millennia, hopefully, you can behave with the demigod that we will seal you in. Goodbye, sister." Ananke, or Rachael as she would prefer, helped Erebus chant in the old language of the primordials and I can feel my essence scattered to the air, all across Earth, and I was put in some type of coma by Erebus's spell. Erebus has always been a meddlesome brother, I can’t believe that Erebus and ‘Rachael’ managed to get into my consciousness and cast this sealing spell on me, I have underestimated them and now I will be stuck with an evil, conniving demigod. I will come back from this humiliation.

Erebus PoV

Gaia has it coming for a long time, but for now I will save Nyx and Tartarus from her manipulation.

“Go save our siblings Erebus, in the meantime I will still disguise myself as a camp oracle. I will make sure those pesky Olympians will lose their power in the future and that there will be better leaders that will end the cycle." Rachael says in a neutral tone, I guess our eldest siblings have a soft spot for mortals after all.

“You know I was just about to do that eldest sibling; it is strange how both of you guys decide to fuse and then disguise as mortals, but I’m not going to judge you. See you in a couple of years” I say in a carefree tone, and I waved to our eldest sibling. My physical form has become like a shadow, and I feel my essence shadow traveling to the realm of Tartarus.

I saw my brother Tartarus, under the spell of Gaia, about the strike the killing blow to his giant son Damasen, but then I use my shadow body to cover my brother's body to contain him. I can feel Tartarus trying to struggle to get away from my body, but I managed to draw a rune on his body that puts him to sleep and can break Gaia's spell. I let go of Tartarus' body once the rune took effect. The giant, Damasen is shocked at how I managed to knock Tartarus out. I notice the titan, Iapetus, has grievous injuries around his body and I manage to heal the titan with my shadows.

“Why did you help us?” The giant asked with uncertainty.

“Well, I never expected to see you here as well Damasen, did you join your brothers to wage war because the last time I saw you, you were working at the farmer. Anyway, I came back to help my brother and wife to be free of your mother's brainwashing. You just happen to be on my way to my wife, and I decided to heal Iapetus because he was the underworld janitor and can't have Hade's janitor to be in bad condition since he was the only one who was brave enough to clean after Cerberus. Plus, it's hilarious that the piercer has a new identity that goes by the name of Bob. It's ironic how Iapetus ruled the underworld before it was given to Hades. Well anyway, you, your half-brother, and your father should rest. I'm going to deal with my lovely wife and make sure my kids are alright, can't believe your mom kidnapped my son and put his doors in Tartarus. Your mother is such a pain Damasen, btw he brainwashes your father and my wife for her stupid scheme to help your brothers to overthrow Olympus. See you later” I explained in a cheery tone as I walked toward my home, The Mansion of Night.

“How did my mother brainwash my father? he’s the pit, well it doesn’t matter. Uncle Erebus will you help Iapetsus and I to get out of this realm” Damasen shouted in a loud voice.

"I will help you nephew, but first let me save my wife quickly. You will need your father's permission to leave first since it is his realm, which he gladly will. I know it's hard to believe that he loves you and your sibling, but he wants you and your siblings to be happy. Tartarus was so happy that he was impregnated with you and your sibling. It was so hard to let your mom take you from him but he understands that he's a bad environment to raise you a lot, he trusted Gaia to not turn you and your sibling to become her weapons against Olympus. I will be honest, I don't care for Olympus at all, the only Olympian I care for is my boy Hades, really wanted to adopt that guy. Your father tries to stop Gaia from waging war, but you know how your momma is a sneaky girl, she stole my spell book so she can brainwash your father and other primordial to do her bidding. Anyway, you should talk to your father for closure. Now I must leave." As I walked toward the Mansion of Night.

"WAIT, YOU TELLING ME THAT TARTARUS IS MY MOTHER AND GAIA IS MY FATHER," Damasen shouted in horror.

"Tartarus will explain the truth once he is awake. Now please stop being noisy. While you were busy being loud, I put a force field way makes you undetectable to other monsters as you can see the shadow ring in your area. Now stay inside while I save my darling” I say as I pointed to the shadows surrounding us. I moved out the forcefield that I created, you think I will tell you how I do that, well my readers, A real magician doesn’t review his secrets, so figure it out yourself.

I got inside the Mansion and luckily my adorable kids didn’t detect me, I don’t want them to be involved with this mess. As I saw my beautiful Nyx laying on the couch, I decided to take my physical form and sneakily put the rune on her back.

“Who are you and you dare touch me, I’M THE NIGHT AND WHY DO I FEEL TIRED AT THE MOMENT” Nyx shouted as she fell asleep, this rune should help her break Gaia’s brainwashing spell and relaxes her. She deserves a break from all that stress, she looks so adorable sleeping.

Thanatos, Hypnos, Eris, Nemesis, some arai, Moros, Oizys, the Keres, Geras, and Charon started to appear with Nyx shout but then they just stopped and just tackled me to the ground and they have tears of happiness that their awesome dad has come back, despite their dark and depressive domains, they will forever be my adorable kittens, I’m the luckiest being alive. Pretty sure the Keres stabbed me out of affection with their scythes.

“Sorry kids, I’ve been gone for so long, your crazy aunty Gaia try to brainwash me to fight her war, but unfortunately, she was successful with your mom and uncle Tartarus. Well anyway I miss you guys and I got ice cream, we have to be quiet, so we don't wake your mommy. She's a hardworking woman, hopefully, she didn't try to hurt you guys while she was brainwashed." I said in an anxious tone, knowing Nyx, if she hurts any innocent being, she will be horrified by her actions. Nys is such a gentle kindhearted being, I'm so glad I married her. I'm the luckiest god alive to marry this wonderful goddess and have these awesome kids.

"Father, she usually just sleeps in her room a lot and usually shouts a lot. She does have huge headaches and just pushes us away for our protection. One time two demigods pretended to be tourists to trick her, I guess they were on some quest. It was a trick, but we played along since we were bored. Mother was fooled rather easily, I guess somehow the spell made her dumber. Mother is arguably the smartest being that I know, right next to you Father. Another time she confuses me with Eris whenever Eris tries to prank her. The spell has been messing with her a lot that she can't think clearly.”Nemesis explained in an emotionless tone, I can tell she is concerned with her mother's health, all of them are.

“Why are two demigods in the Mansion and Eris, have you been misbehaving and giving your mom a hard time," I said in a half-annoyed and half-amused tone.

"Yes Father, I pranked Mother at times, but I swear it was nothing serious. I will make it up to her I promised." Eris said in a remorseful tone, it is my daughter’s nature to cause strife, but as long it wasn’t serious then it is fine, but deep down I know that Eris is a loving daughter.�� She’s just mischievous like her dear old dad.

“Well kitten, you can help make some good food for your mom. You guys want to have ice cream first, I got chocolate, mint chocolate chip, some cookies and cream, some vanilla, some yellow cake.” As I take out ice cream cartons, my kids were greedily consuming the ice reams with the spoons they created out of thin air.

"Hey Dad, I'm glad that you are back, but I worried for Mother. I wasn’t with her because Gaia kidnapped me and have her son, Alcyoneus, but luckily Percy Jackson, Hazel Levesque, and Frank Zhang free me from capture.” Thanatos says in a worried tone.

“I’m glad that the three demigods saved you, my son. Nyx And I never wanted you kids to deal with this dumb drama with your aunt and her bloodline, so we moved inside your uncle Tartarus. If I wasn't endlessly pursued by your aunt goon, I would have saved you myself Thanatos. I'm just glad you are ok." I say as I hug my son, It is good to be home.

Some problems in TSATS

I finished the book a day or two ago and personally it was alright. I didn't find Nico as out of character as some people are saying but I also found some of his behavior a little confusing. My main problem though, were some of the loose ends and continuity issues.

One of the biggest questions I had that wasn't answered by this book: How did Bob and Damasen escape? The last we saw of them before this, they were fighting Tartarus and losing. The same Tartarus who demonstrated that he could consume the essence of immortals like he did against Krios and Hyperion.

So then, how did Bob escape this and instead end up in the clutches of Nyx? Rick didn't really give any explanation for this in the book.

The other big question: Damasen. What happened to him? We get a sentence or two of explanation in the book. Here's what Meneotes tells Nico:

‘I hope Damasen has regenerated. He was killed fighting the drakon, but if he has been reborn, I am sure he would love to help you.’ (SaTS)

But this explanation doesn't even make sense. In House of Hades, Damasen changes his fate by befriending the drakon instead of fighting it.

"The Maeonian drakon spread its frilled collar and hissed, its poison breath filling the battlefield with the smell of pine and ginger. It shifted its hundred-foot-long body, flicking its dappled green tail and wiping out a battalion of ogres. Riding on its back was a red-skinned giant with flowers in his rust-coloured braids, a jerkin of green leather and a drakon-rib lance in his hand. ‘Damasen!’ Annabeth cried. The giant inclined his head. ‘Annabeth Chase, I took your advice. I chose myself a new fate.’" (HoH)

So, how did everything change? Why did the drakon start fighting again? No explanation is given and Damasen is revealed to not have regenerated yet so he's left behind in Tartarus.

Besides these two loose ends, there's another continuity issue relating to Bianca. Near the end of SaTS, Nico is allowed by Hades to talk to the spirits of Maria and Bianca.

"‘Where you went?’ Nico raised an eyebrow at Bianca. ‘How is she here, then? How are you here? Aren’t you in Elysium?’ ‘I am,’ said Bianca. ‘But the two of us … We were granted one last visit with you.’" (SaTS)

Nico asks if Bianca is in Elsyium and she confirms it. But this just can't be true based on what he said in SoN.

‘Where you went?’ Nico raised an eyebrow at Bianca. ‘How is she here, then? How are you here? Aren’t you in Elysium?’ ‘I am,’ said Bianca. ‘But the two of us … We were granted one last visit with you.’

This isn't as big of a deal, probably just a mistake on Rick's part, but when I read it I knew something was wrong.

Overall the book was entertaining and I'd probably give it a 6-6.5

Let’s talk again about how Hermes tells Percy in TLO that immortals can’t change and then Rick hits us with Bob and Damasedus. And then after we’ve cried over “say hello to the sun and stars for me” he hits us with an entire series about people breaking out of the narrative where the protagonist is the god of prophecy.
