By the way, I will never not resent the fact that Nico's grief for Jason is used as background for Solangelo's first kiss.

I decided to keep reading through it I just got done with Nicos first time in Tartarus flashback scene. They totally forgot that Nico went to see Achlys and she wasn’t even mentioned. Nico has a dream in blood of Olympus about when he met Achlys to get the death mist. She said she couldn’t do anything to help Nico because he was already perfectly miserable and didn’t need the death mist.

Also they introduced Hypnos as the god that put the entire island of Manhattan to sleep in the last Olympian. Hypnos didn’t have anything to do with that. It was Morpheus who put everyone to sleep.

There are so many other inconsistencies and throughout this book (and Riordan books in general but this one has so many) I’m sure Mark hasn’t read the series in years and his memories of the details are very skewed. Same with Rick I doubt he rereads his own books I bet he barely remembers writing them. There are so many inconsistencies and contradictories.

Some problems in TSATS

I finished the book a day or two ago and personally it was alright. I didn't find Nico as out of character as some people are saying but I also found some of his behavior a little confusing. My main problem though, were some of the loose ends and continuity issues.

One of the biggest questions I had that wasn't answered by this book: How did Bob and Damasen escape? The last we saw of them before this, they were fighting Tartarus and losing. The same Tartarus who demonstrated that he could consume the essence of immortals like he did against Krios and Hyperion.

So then, how did Bob escape this and instead end up in the clutches of Nyx? Rick didn't really give any explanation for this in the book.

The other big question: Damasen. What happened to him? We get a sentence or two of explanation in the book. Here's what Meneotes tells Nico:

‘I hope Damasen has regenerated. He was killed fighting the drakon, but if he has been reborn, I am sure he would love to help you.’ (SaTS)

But this explanation doesn't even make sense. In House of Hades, Damasen changes his fate by befriending the drakon instead of fighting it.

"The Maeonian drakon spread its frilled collar and hissed, its poison breath filling the battlefield with the smell of pine and ginger. It shifted its hundred-foot-long body, flicking its dappled green tail and wiping out a battalion of ogres. Riding on its back was a red-skinned giant with flowers in his rust-coloured braids, a jerkin of green leather and a drakon-rib lance in his hand. ‘Damasen!’ Annabeth cried. The giant inclined his head. ‘Annabeth Chase, I took your advice. I chose myself a new fate.’" (HoH)

So, how did everything change? Why did the drakon start fighting again? No explanation is given and Damasen is revealed to not have regenerated yet so he's left behind in Tartarus.

Besides these two loose ends, there's another continuity issue relating to Bianca. Near the end of SaTS, Nico is allowed by Hades to talk to the spirits of Maria and Bianca.

"‘Where you went?’ Nico raised an eyebrow at Bianca. ‘How is she here, then? How are you here? Aren’t you in Elysium?’ ‘I am,’ said Bianca. ‘But the two of us … We were granted one last visit with you.’" (SaTS)

Nico asks if Bianca is in Elsyium and she confirms it. But this just can't be true based on what he said in SoN.

‘Where you went?’ Nico raised an eyebrow at Bianca. ‘How is she here, then? How are you here? Aren’t you in Elysium?’ ‘I am,’ said Bianca. ‘But the two of us … We were granted one last visit with you.’

This isn't as big of a deal, probably just a mistake on Rick's part, but when I read it I knew something was wrong.

Overall the book was entertaining and I'd probably give it a 6-6.5

Thinking many Will thoughts. Of him as a healer familiar with death but only as the worst case scenario and not something neutral and unbiased. Will seeing only the good in Nico but failing to realize death is part of that, that it’s intrinsic to Nico. Understanding Nico and the Underworld also means Will understanding death not as an enemy but as a part of life.

Tartarus boys and the Cocoa Puffs

I’ve seen a few headcanons (especially in fics) that Will solace actually is naturally brunette but when he was claimed by Apollo his hair turned blonde (weither it’s over time due to sun bleaching or straight away).

And I just wanted to say I love this so much purely because of how heartbreaking some of the implications can be. 🤗

It’s never happened to any Apollo campers before, Will doesn’t know why it had to happen to him, his one sense of normalcy taken away so quickly, his one connection to his previous life- gone.

Will starts to pick up quite quickly he’s not like his other siblings, he’s can’t write and is average at archery. But he can heal, better than anyone else can.

He was different from the start, he was claimed differently, and his gift was different too.

And while still struggling with what to do, at the ripe age of 12 he’s now in charge of a cabin full of kids younger than him, because he was the oldest to survive.

Just imagine how the plague powers would also affect him. Apollo himself said that it seemed Will had gained all of his good qualities and none of his bad.

How would this 15 year old feel that the same hands that can heal can cause harm?
