that moment in the last ep when jace says "i hope you do not mean to use [visenya] as an example" to rhaenyra is v delicious to me. it shows part of jace's control issues. rhaenyra is not your child, jace! he has taken responsibility in both the war room and in the family and he considers rhaenyra to be his responsibility like, say, joffrey is. and her going away like she did without a single raven or a word to jace must have been such a blow that he feels like he has to police what she's doing from now on, that he can do what he thinks is best.

furthermore, why jace would not take visenya as an example says a lot about how different jace and rhaenyra see their legacies. visenya was a very powerful woman, warrior and queen, survived her younger brother and managed to put her own son of dubious birth on the throne. it's easy to see why rhaenyra identifies and admires her. but we also know how visenya was vilified as a sorceress and a usurper and that's how jace must have seen her as he was taught about his family history by the maesters. he feels no kinship to her being both a man and a firstborn son raised in the safety net of his family support.

jace is deeply worried about how people perceive him and how he will be seen in the future too, will i be a good prince and king? will this unchangeable thing in me (a bastard) allow me to be what i want to be (a targaryen)? he does not want to step out of line if he can't help it, he wants to learn the intricacies of high valyrian, he wants to be the perfect prince, he wants to be trusted to do what it must be done as rhaenyra's heir. that he thinks that rhaenyra will follow in what /he/ knows about visenya, and what's she done wrong to that moment clashes too much with how he thinks he (and she!) must be. visenya's legacy still persists alongside maegor's and while jace wants to be The Targaryen, he can't afford to be "tainted" in that way.

it's why i think it's super interesting that jace, allow me the assumption from his daemonization this season, did not disagree with b&c because to him it feels justified for luke's murder. the same way rhaenyra feels justified in looking up to visenya's legacy and to try and emulate her because she feels lost "the path I walk has never been trod". she has to do everything in her power to win this war! no one is coming out unscathed.

sorry thinking abt the bad kids again. thinking about how they keep having to do things that they shouldn’t have to. thinking about how seven girls went missing in their freshman year and they were the only people consistently making progress in finding them. thinking about how they were expected to return the crown of the nightmare kind in a week. thinking about how they couldn’t even get a real break afterwards because they immediately went back to school and then had to fight the night yorb over summer break. thinking about how the bad kids literally BROUGHT BACK THE SUN and the only way they can get school credit for any of it is for each of them to write a ten page paper. for each incident.
