Radical chic, senza fantasia.

Chapter 35: The Risk of D.
âItâs a pleasure to meet you again, Miss.â Shanks beams as he bows a little. âGood to see you on your own two feet already.â
You tilt your head in confusion. âA little birdie told me.â He says, looking over at Marco.
When the van reached the small port town the brothers had gone to work. Youâd been surprised to see Shanks, of all people, but Marco wasnât. Ivan had done a lot of the coordinating, and Shanks was in town already. As Marco explained, he wasnât technically a pirate anymore, but Shanks was the most experienced sailor at Lvneel, so he wasnât surprised that was who Ivan had found.
Shanks, as well, had a reason to see things through. According to the man himself, Teach had given him the scars over his eye.
âWhen the world changed, I really thought heâd settle down.â Shanks says, bringing you below deck on the small vessel, and offering you a place to sit. âInstead itâs come to this.â
âAre you,â you start, but stop, unsure of how to ask him if heâs going to get involved in whatâs, by definition, a murder.
âGoing to help?â He prompts. You can feel that steel gaze on you from behind long crimson locks, but you donât try to meet it. Youâre still not sure where you stand, and until you open the Library, you donât think youâll know. âNo. Itâs a family matter.â He answers, looking away.
âNow, if things go sideways, Iâm not going to leave it be, but I donât see that happening.â He adds, giving you a wink as he leaves the room.
You stayed put, not just because you were sore and tired, but also because you figured youâd just get in the way. At least while everyone was doing whatever it was people did to set sail. The most you knew about boats were all the different ways you used to be able to reach the galley on the Moby.
Thereâs a steady lurch in the ship as it breaks away from the pier. The toss of the waves is a little alarming at first, you donât remember it being so pronounced last time, but this caravelâs a fraction of the size of the other ship.
After a few minutes the door opens and Marco smiles at you.
âWant to come out on the deck?â He asks, stepping into the room. âItâs beautiful out, and we wonât be on the ship for too long.â
Looking from him to the door and back, concern crosses your face. âItâs⊠a small ship.â
âWe wonât capsize.â He reassures you, kneeling down before you. âI wonât let you fall into the ocean, pretty bird, I promise, yoi.â One hand twines with yours, the other caresses your cheek. "But if you want to stay in here, Iâll stay with you.â
You can feel the heat rushing to your face and cover it with your hands. A strangled groan of frustration escapes you and you reach out and grab Marcoâs shirt collar, shaking him a little.
âYouâre killing me.â You grumble, pulling him close enough to kiss his forehead. âBut thank you for trying to distract me.â
Bright blue eyes look into yours, and his face is calm as it always is. You can see the faint lines of worry creasing here and there, but heâs keeping his expression neutral. âItâs going to be okay, no matter what happens.â
â⊠Have you⊠Have you ever?â You canât get the last few words out, but Marcoâs eyes stay steady on yours.
He nods, looking away in memory before looking back at you. âNot even the saints were saints, and clashes between pirates and marines were always violent.â
âBut⊠like this?â
He reaches out, relief on his face when you donât flinch, and gives you a sad smile. âNo, my love, never like this before. We never knew betrayal before Teach.â
Marco stayed with you in the small cabin, letting you rest while the ship sailed. He got you out of the chair long enough to get you in his lap, but he just had you rest against him while he ran his fingers soothingly along your hair and back.
There wasnât much said between the two of you, but the commotion out on deck caught your attention. Marco led you to the deck, staying nearby - not that he had much of a choice, you had most of a death grip on his shirt.
It wasnât fear of the ocean so much as fear of falling in it. You might not use your devil fruit much at all, but that didnât mean you werenât aware of the pitfalls from it. It didnât take long for you to be completely distracted from the concerns of the ocean, however.
The clear sky brought with it a warm sun, and the sound of the caravel cutting through the small waves was soothing in its own way. What was mesmerizing, however, was watching the other people on the small ship move around.
Shanks slipped through rigging and rails as though he had extra arms, instead of being down one. Izou was graceful from the moment youâd met him, but he seemed even more at ease on the softly rocking boat than on dry land. Jozu moved as if the waves were nothing to fear, and Vista was yawning at the helm.
There were two memories that stayed with you, years after the events on Drop Island. The first was when Marco transformed entirely. The teal-blue flames, the gold that licked at the edges of the fire that made his feathers and wings, the long ringed tail feathers, that glimmered in the sunlight.
The markings around his eyes, and the way his tattoo stayed with him were surprising to you. The Phoenix in your books had no such markings, and other small details were different, but none of it mattered.
He was beautiful.
The soft ruffle of fire against your cheek as he nuzzled you, urging you onto his back so he could take you ashore himself. The comforting warmth, the surety with which he flew, and the feel of each beat of his wings. All of it was engraved in your memory as much as your heart.
You wanted him to change again, somewhere safe, somewhere that was just the two of you. You wanted to commit every detail of this part of him into your memory, learn every curve and flicker. You wanted to be able to admire all sides of him when there wasnât such a terrible darkness looming over everything.
Marco circled the beach an extra time or two you were sure, letting the others come ashore, and delighting at the feeling of your fingers buried in the warm fiery comfort of his feathers. No one pointed it out when he landed, everyone understood why.
Everyone gave you space once it was time. No one rushed you to do something youâd spent most of your life keeping secret. Instead they only promised that the skies and horizon were clear, that there wasnât anyone around to be able to see what you were doing.
With time to focus you were able to manifest the doors to the library on the beach. It was easier to open the doors against a flat surface, like a floor or wall, but with a little time you could effectively build the frame work where ever you wanted, and bring the doors in that way.
Izou and Vista stood beside you, and Izou had a hand on your shoulder, ready to throw you out of Teachâs reach if he tried to pull you into the library with his devil fruit. Marco and Jozu were nearby, ready to move in, or support depending on what state Teach was in. Ace was a bit further back, ready to catch you and fill his protector role, but none of that was needed.
All the meticulous planning.
All the possibilities.
Everything you could have expected, and none of it matched up.
A small mountain of books was gathered in the open area youâd created the doors by. It was the part of the library you were most comfortable with, so you knew it was where youâd deposited Teach. He hadnât wandered far, but heâd apparently gathered, read, and organized an alarming number of books in the few hours heâd been in this space.
It hadnât even been a full twenty four hours.
Yet, in the midst of the pile of the books was Teach.
Unmoving.
Cold.
Dead.
His skin was a sickly grey, desiccated and gone entirely in large patches. What was left of his skin one his face was pulled into a wide smile. Your legs nearly buckled at the sight, but you managed to keep your feet.
Marco, Jozu, and Ace came closer, looking into the library one after the other.
âBy the seas.â Izou swore softly.
âWhat happened?â Vista murmured.
You stepped forward, a few hands moving toward you, but none of them ended up stopping you. Once you stepped into the Library you knew. It was as it always was. The Library gave you knowledge. Within the space you could read everything, and you knew what book you needed for what knowledge you craved. The minute your feet hit the stone floor you knew.
You turned and looked back at everyone else. âThe Library is mine. I decide who enters, and who leaves. I decide who can read, and who canât.â You turn toward Teach, but move your gaze back to Marco before you turn far enough to see the dead man again. âWithout my permission, it seems thereâs a price.â
â⊠The Library really did eat him.â Marco murmurs, stepping forward and through the doors.
You nod. âItâs more that Teach fed himself to the Library. He⊠he knew the cost. The Library wouldnât condone ignorance.â
The others step inside and they carefully make their way over to Teach. The brothers collect their wayward sibling, carrying him out of the Library, while Marco stays by your side. Once theyâre outside you walk over to the books piled up around where Teach had been.
You skim the titles, making some sense of what drove him as the Library provides you summaries. You pale a little, leaning against a stack of books and letting out a shuddering breath.
â⊠What was he reading?â
Looking up at Marco, you look over at the doors and pull them shut. He doesnât even flinch at the sound of the doors closing, the heavy sound of it is light compared to everything else. Instead, his eyes shift over the spines of books piled nearby.
You breathe in deep, trying to steady your own twisting stomach. âHe found books onâŠâ Pausing you try not to wretch. Years of hiding, certain knowledge was still enough to send your anxiety rocketing. âThe void century, ah, information on the One Piece, and⊠and I think he was,â you stop again, feeling dizzy from the overwhelming understanding of what Teach was going for. You lived your entire life with a bulls-eye on your back, and carefully avoided anything that could make it worse, but Teach had dove into such knowledge without a second thought.
Marcoâs hand is on your back soothingly.
âItâs okay, you donât have to say it.â
You shake your head. âI think he was trying to blackmail the World Government.â
â⊠To what end?â Marco murmurs but you just shrug.
âHe⊠He died, before he could find enough information.â You admit. âIâd have to sit and read these properly to really know, butâŠâ You start pointing. âThese eight books here are all about the Void Century, specifically just one kingdom, and these over here are about the equations for the magnetic pull of the Grandline islands, so you can navigate them without a log pose. These books are about the production of the ponegylphs and the language used. Four of these are about devil fruits. Thereâs twelve more history books, and⊠I donât think he made it to that stack there.â You say finally, pointing to a few books that had been nearest Teach.
âAnd the cost?â
âA year of life.â You explain, looking around at the books. âPer⊠per book. He read,â you count quickly. âFifty-three books.â
âThat wouldâve made him ninety-three, yoi.â Marco mumbles the words a little before his eyes go wide. âHowâd he read that many books so fast?â
âShowing is better than saying.â You reply, looking around and finding a book. Handing it to Marco, you give him a reassuring smile. âYou have permission to read anything in here, no charge.â
Marco takes the book, and as he opens the cover he understands. Holding it open, the pages turn for him. He looks at each page for just a couple seconds before it moves onto the next, the pages nearly fluttering by. After just a few minutes, the last page turns and Marco looks up at you a little dumbfounded.
Taking the book from his hands you smile. âAlmost three-hundred pages in under ten minutes.â You put the book back on the shelf. âEven if he was reading from books double that length, in an hour he wouldâve read four, and in twelve hours, forty-eight. Once you get into a groove, though, it goes even faster, and the Library doesnât care about length, the cost is the same.â You explain, running your finger over a few titles that were short.
You watch Marcoâs eyes flit over the books stacked up in a strange monument to his brother.
âHe was close, yoi.â He says after a few moments. âWhatever he was aiming for.â
You nod. âI donât think he wouldâve risked the last six otherwise.â
The weight of the last twenty four hours sits heavy between you. For a long moment neither of you say anything, still in the quiet library as you struggle to process the revelation. Whether for his own gain or not, it seemed as though Teach was trying to empower revolution.
To finish what Roger started, and change the world to one that was truly free? Or to hustle his way onto the empty throne and create a world power he held the reins on?
It was hard to say, based on what you knew of him. Teachâs actions toward you were only enough for you to understand he was willing to make sacrifices for his goals - not what those goals were. You couldnât say that he would be better or worse than the government you currently had, but even if you had known before now, you werenât willing to give your life for his cause.
Certainly not with how he had âaskedâ.
You couldnât help the small guilt that nipped at you, however. There had to be a way that wouldâve worked for everyone involved. If you had only-.
âAn issue for another day.â Marco declares quietly, breaking your swirling thoughts. âCâmon, mi cielo, letâs go home.â

And I am going to end my El Internado rewatch posts on Ivan and Marcos, who started the show by wanting to punch each otherâs teeth in and ended up as best of everything, incandescently happy and utterly free, having burned down the Nazi school from hell to the ground.
This was a rare show that held up on rewatch - I still laughed and sniffled and shipped and raged and swooned. It had some awesome performances and characters but was held together by really solid writing that knew what to keep and to discard and aaaaaaaa such a pleasure!
And yes, Ivan x Julia are still in my Top 5 tv OTPs and Ivan in top 5 fave TV characters. Here we are.

Fedez Bestemmia e inveisce contro Morgan

Chapter 33: Options
Waking up was rough. The strange sensation of your dream clings to you and it takes you a minute to realize youâre even awake at all. The pain in your body is foreign because you didnât feel it while you were in the Library - or the dream Library - and the sheets cling to you in a way that feels too heavy. Like they mean to consume you in retribution.
It takes a moment longer to realize you did not sleep in your bed last night. That the odd feeling of the sheets was because you were in someone elseâs bed. Confusion shifts to understanding as you piece together the events of the night before. Pain zings through you when you move too quickly and you let yourself sink back into the mattress.
Marco took you to his familyâs home because it was closer than your home. Heâd used his devil fruitâs powers to ease your wounds, but it had sapped what was left of your strength. Even so you still hurt, but that was a testament to just how roughly you and Teach had clashed. At the end of things the only thing keeping you moving was adrenaline, and with that gone even rest couldnât stave off the ache of your one-sided fight with Teach.
You stared at the ceiling and wondered idly if he was really dead.
It was true that you didnât know much about your own devil fruit because of your fear of getting caught. You never shared the Library with anyone else, never mind throwing someone in there on their own. You didnât know if that space really would eat someone to incorporate their knowledge or not.
You only even knew you could turn into an owl because you felt the need to do something and had ducked into the Library to test things out. Past actually changing into the shape and changing back, youâd never done anything else.
Youâd spent years trying to make sure no one even knew you had a devil fruit, and while that hadnât worked out for you, youâd like to think you at least mitigated the risks.
A soft knock at the door precedes Marco entering. He smiles when he sees youâre awake, tray of food in his hands.
âI wasnât sure if you were still sleeping, yoi.â He explains, setting the tray down nearby. âAnd I didnât want to come in without warning.â He sits down on the edge of the bed. âHowâd you sleep?â
âWell enough.â You answer, wincing as you sit up.
âHey, no, hold on.â Marcoâs hands are on your shoulders, but you shift and give him a reassuring smile and he helps you sit up instead of trying to get you to lay back down.
âIâm just stiff from sleeping.â You reassure him. âI mean, things still ache, but nothing feels too bad.â
âAfter you eat weâll need to change your bandages anyway.â
You start to remind him heâs a veterinarian, and then you remember that he spent years as the doctor on an Emperorâs ship. âWhat time is it?â
âClose to ten,â he answers, setting the tray across your lap. âIt was after one when we got back here, yoi. Ivan wants you to call him once youâre up for it. Heâs been coordinating with Vista about getting us to Drop Island without anyone noticing.â
âVistaaaah- ah, one of your many brothers.â You nod as you begin eating. âI remember you talking about him. IâŠâ You stop, looking down at your food. âYou never mentioned Teach, I really shouldâve known better.â
âI shouldâve told you about him.â Marco insists, sitting at the end of the bed. âI knew he was focused on his goal, but I didnât think it was going to be to such an extent.â
You shake your head. âWith how everything came together for him, it was probably for the best it unfolded the way it did. I donât want to think about how poorly things couldâve gone if theyâd happened differently.â
Marco concedes the point, checking his phone as you eat and moving the tray aside once youâre done. He takes your hand, leading you into the hallway and down to a nearby bathroom. You realize quickly how large his familyâs estate must be when an auxiliary bathroom has as much space as this one.
Marco helps you strip, and carefully removes the bandages from you. He strips as well, and gets the shower running. Itâs certainly big enough for both of you, and the lip edge is set low.
âPops and the nurses stayed on this floor while he was still alive,â Marco says, answering questions you havenât even asked yet. âThis bathroom was made for easy access for Pops and the nurses. Afterward I used it when any of the kids got hurt. The room right across the hall is set up as a small clinic space.â
âThis place is bigger than I thought.â You laugh nervously as Marco moves you both into the warm water, and starts carefully cleaning you up.
âYeah, itâs 248,000 square feet.â You freeze in place and Marco nearly snorts. You look at him and his control breaks and he laughs.
âAre you-.â
âIâm not kidding, yoi!â He insists, laughing more despite it. âThe Moby was over two million square feet, the house is small comparatively. We couldnât convert the entire ship, and the manor only has five floors.â
âOnly.â You nearly choke the words, letting Marco help you wash up. Youâd be more useful if he hadnât nearly broken your brain with statistics about the house. âI knew this place was going to be large, I guess I just didnât realize how large.â
âWell, the entire estate is almost a hundred acres, and thereâs a few smaller houses.â Marco says, grinning and you put your face in your hand. âThe manorâs only home to a few of us, and some of my married siblings live in other houses on the land.â
âYou werenât worried about your brothers,â you begin, as Marco starts to rinse you both off. âYou were worried Iâd see the size of this place when you came here to grab your clothes and a toothbrush and have an existential crisis.â You tease.
He laughs, giving you a quick kiss before trading places with you so he can clean up. The shower area is so large thereâs a little ledge you can sit on while he washes up.
âHonestly I hadnât thought about it,â he admits sheepishly. âI was worried about my brothers so much I didnât even think about the impact the manor would have, yoi. Weâve been here for a long time now, and thereâs so many people it just doesnât feel fancy.â
âIt feels like home.â You say and Marco pauses for a moment before smiling and nodding.
âYeah.â
You lean against the wall as Marco goes through his own routine. You grin after a moment and tilt your head a little.
âDonât rush on my account.â You say, biting your bottom lip when he looks over his shoulder at you.
With a smile he turns and faces you. âYou can look, mi cielo, but until you heal youâre not doing much more than that.â
Your grin breaks into a wide smile. âIf I work up enough of an appetite I might actually keep you under me for once.â
You see a few small flames lick Marcoâs skin as blush rushes to his cheeks. His expression is mostly unchanged despite the other things heâs not controlling well, and he returns his focus to cleaning up. You take the win for what it is, stretching slowly and trying not to let the aches in your body ruin your brightening mood.
The shower cuts off and Marco gives you a hand up. Itâs frustrating how much you ache, but considering how things could have gone, this was a small price.
Heâs careful as he dries you off, and you barely twitch or flinch.
âI knew when I healed you as much as I could last night that I wouldnât have to worry while you slept, but this is worse than I thought it was.â There was anger in his voice, and you could feel the heavy warmth of his flames. The pains and aches ease, and for a brief moment almost vanish entirely.
âI canât sleep all day again.â You warn softly.
âAye,â he replies, leaning forward and kissing the back of your shoulder. âIâm not going to exhaust you. You swelled up and bruised bad while you slept, Iâm just going to do enough to lessen it before we wrap you back up.â
Thereâs a long quiet moment before the warmth of his flames fade, and you can feel the leftover pain settle back into your bones.
âIâm going to throw him into the ocean.â He growls through grit teeth, fingers tracing very carefully over your back. You tense, thinking about your dream and Marcoâs hand rests a little heavier against your back. âSorry, pretty bird, itâs not a pleasant topic, I know.â
You shake your head. âThatâs⊠not it.â Breathing in slowly you let it out and turn so youâre facing him. âI had a dream last night, and⊠I donât⊠I donât know how to say this, but I think Teach is already dead.â
Marcoâs brows raise, and after a momentâs consideration they furrow a little. âWhat makes you think that?â
âI dreamt the Library ate him.â You admit, looking up at him sheepishly. It sounds wildly improbable when you say it out loud.
The look of shock on Marcoâs face almost makes you smile despite the heavy topic. âAte him?â You nod. â⊠It does that?â
You shrug. âI donât really know what it does. I rarely used it, and when I did it was just to read. I used it once to transform just so I knew what that was like, but Iâve been trying to live like I donât have a fruit for ten years. I donât really know what it can do.â
Looking away from him you start to speak and stop a few times before sorting out what you wanted to say. Marco waited patiently, as he always did.
âItâs not: What if I killed your brother,â you finally explain. âItâs: What if he only died because I didnât learn how to control my ability?â
Marco leans forward, wrapping his arms around you and letting you rest your head against his chest. His embrace is careful, gentle where it needs to be, and holding onto you as tightly as he dares to in the places he can. He kisses the top of your head, mindful of the cut thatâs going to be healing for a few days yet, even if he tends to it every day.
âWhat you did brought you to me,â he says quietly. âEvery choice, yoi. Whether Teach is alive or not doesnât matter to me as much as your being here right now does.â
âBut -.â
âYou didnât kill him.â Marco interrupts, leaning you both back so he can look into your eyes. âWhether the Library did, or we have to later, youâre not at fault.â
You know heâs trying to console you. You donât doubt that he means what heâs saying, but the weight of it all is too heavy. Youâve done a lot to keep yourself alive, but youâve never had to make such a choice. Itâs never been a matter of someone elseâs life or your own.
What gave you the right to put yourself above another? Teach had certainly done things you couldnât see as being right, but by the letter of the law you were the one with a bounty on your head. Was it immoral for him to turn you into the Government? Was it immoral for you to want to live peacefully regardless?
Was the only way to answer that with someoneâs death?
âThere had to be another way!â You finally shout. Marcoâs fingers slip between your own and you can feel the building turmoil inside you subside a little from the gesture.
âWasnât there?â You ask quietly. âIsnât there?â
âThere are always options, mi cielo.â His face is twisted with painful understanding, and he caresses your cheek with a warm hand. âLiving is deciding what options you can live with.â
âI didnât pick this, though.â You press your lips together, holding back tears of frustration.
âNo, you didnât. Teach did.â He insists, leaning down and kissing the tear that escapes your eye. âWeâre heading to Drop Island later today.â He explains, kissing your forehead. âIâd rather you stay here, but-.â
âNo one else can open the Library.â You interject, nodding and leaning against him.
âI donât mind losing⊠taâ someone like that.â
Teachâs words echo in your mind from the dream, that crooked smile burned into your senses. It was like he was at peace, like he knew that such was the possibility of his choices, and if he was going to die then at least he was dying in a way that didnât bother him.
âIâd want to be there anyway.â
âOh?â
You nod, staying tucked against him. âWhatever is decided, whateverâs happened or not, I want to face it with you.â
Marco rests his chin carefully on top of your head, keeping you close for a minute before re-bandaging your wounds. Youâre both quiet as he works, and you donât complain when he helps you get dressed. No matter how the day goes, itâs not going to be easy.
But at least you wonât be alone.

I forgot that the whole story started with Mariaâs escape from the psych ward! I actually love that parental/familial love was such a huge theme in this show - Mariaâs drive to find her wrongly taken child and then to be a mother to him is such a driver and theme in the narrative - just as important as any romance. Her and Ivanâs mother/son bond is one of my favorite relationships in this (also for once casting an actress not much older than her supposed son makes sense since she was barely a teen when she had him.) And the irony of Noiret taking a kid Maria very much wanted so as to please his wealthy wife (if I remember correctly, her baby was stillborn and he swapped the kids so she wouldnât lose it) and then abusing the hell out of him the kidâs entire life for the sin of not being blood when there is someone who really wanted him (and who he stuck in a psych ward!)
Speaking of things I forgot, I forgot what an utter DILF Hector was!
They were clearly setting up Maria x Hector at first. I kinda hope that after she grieves her amazing Fermin she and Hector eventually do make a go of it (and Marcos and Ivan become step-cousins, heh.)
Anyway, moving on. Ivan!!!! Light of my life!!! Itâs one of those things where I knew he was a fan fave going in but was going âhuh, why, not a fanâ and then by the end of s1 I was all âI love him more than anything!!!!â Heh. And Carolina. She was beautiful and acted OK but I donât think the character ever clicked for me. She wasnât interesting on her own and in terms of ships, I shipped her neither with Ivan (it was dependency on his side and pity on hers) nor Marcos (he was not the greatest boyfriend to her.) Itâs kinda funny that they were setting this as a big love triangle but to their credit, changed tack when they saw it wasnât hitting.
Papa Noiret! A truly a gold medal winner in the abuse Olympics! He just comes across as a garden variety too busy/disinterested parent here - who knew that heâd turn out to be an abuser, murderer, sadist and Nazi. I wish I knew whether they decided to make him one of the Big Bad Guys from the start or as they went along.
I see dead people! Seriously, these people will have a 40% survival rate.
Marcos!!! I liked him but was never as fond of him as I probably should have been but his love and care for Paula was everything!
God, what a blast from the past!
