I know this is a old joke within the fandom, but I really wanted to talk about the whole “she’s just a friend!” line Adrien would say all the time.

It was pretty common to joke about Adrien being a dumb blond who was oblivious to his feelings whenever he said that, but I actually think what he says is quite sweet.

We know Adrien lived a very sheltered life. The only sorta friend he had was Chloe. He didn’t grow up dreaming about a dramatic, heartfelt romance but instead of going to school and finally making friends and being a part of something.

Calling someone a friend isn’t something that Adrien takes lightly. It’s something he longed for his whole life after being isolated for so long.

We can see how much it means to him during the scene where Marinette falls in love with him. He tells Plagg that she’s just a friend, then goes “A friend!” With a dreamy smile on his face.

Adrien and Marinette’s relationship being built on friendship is actually so important and meaningful because that makes Marinette everything Adrien dreamed of having and more.
