can't believe Emilie Agreste ran away from British high society to grasp her own freedom only to end up essentially marrying her father.

"Felix secretly swapped out the rings with a fake before Maribug ever gave them to Adrien, so the akuma went into a fake ring and the real ring is in London."

You get how that would only add an aditional fifth layer of mixed-messaging to the message about Adrien's right to self-determination right? At that point, the episode about how Adrien deserves a right to make his own decisions would:

1-Fail to let Adrien escape the Trophy-prison. (he needs to be murder-saved instead)

2-Have Marinette decide who Adrien's mom is and where Adriens home is, instead of lettign Adrien do so himself.

3-NOT end with Maribug telling him the Senti-secret after he just gave Emil Graham the ring. As such implicitly stating that even now Maribug doesnt trust him with his own autonomy.

4-Have the villain of the episode (who the child-audience have been conditioned to distrust over 5 straight seasons) be the only one explicitly stating the moral of Adrien's right to self-determination.

5-Claim that Adrien not being in posession of his own soul was literally the only thing that kept him safe during this whole affair. It would be a thematic confirmation that Gabriel was right to keep Adrien in the dark. 6- as i was writing issue 4, i realised a sixth, or truly 0th under-cutting i hadnt even realised going into this post... This episode was broken before the writers ever put pen to paper. By the simple nature of the episode being a custody battle, it cannot be about the right to self determination. Closest it can get is a version of Solomon's Law: "She who truly loves him gets the child". The episode doesnt end with Adrien getting a right to make decisions for himself, it ends with an explicit message that Nathalie has a right to make decisions for him. (it's the difference between a Custody Battle and an Emancipation Procedure.)

Werepapa's had a single textual message it had to get across, and they might have undermined it six seperate and distinct methods. I'd say that deserves a trophy, but after this episode I dont trust them with the symbolism.

So, I was rewatching Glaciator 2 with my dad today, and there's a particular bit of Marinette dialogue that suddenly has new context, with the release of season 6.

"But telling someone you love them? If it doesn't work out, it's your heart that gets cataclysm-ed, and no Miraculous Ladybug can repair that. That's why I never get anywhere with boys. When things are really important to me, I get so scared that it won't work out that I can't help trying to control every possible outcome! I tell myself stories with wedding dresses, and hamsters, and what people see is not Marinette opening her heart up. It's Marinette talking about some ridiculous nonsense she's made up."

Think about how she's been acting in season 6 so far. Catastrophising, scheming, trying to control everything she possibly can. She even says as much in Illustrhater. I genuinely think she knows the truth about Gabriel is going to come out eventually. And I genuinely think she's preparing for Adrien to break up with her over it.

She's acting crazy because she's terrified. She's acting crazy because she thinks she's going to lose Adrien.

first I'd like to note the callback to the episode Chameleon. very nice.

next, I'm curious about who us and them are. when she refers to them, she may be referring to herself as Chrysalis, or she may be referring to someone else. as for when she's referring to us, I can't help but to think of the way season 5 ended, with the bright light shining. it makes me think that may be the person who is helping her. perhaps her from the future? perhaps Tomoe? perhaps a different threat we haven't been introduced to yet? not sure, but very interesting.

also loving the implication that she's just at the cafe spying on marinette and adrien on their date.
