Your heart and soul is mine (and mine are yours) - Chap 2
Chap summary: The first thing to know about being a Jujutsu Sorcerer is how to control your CE, from there it's just basic manipulation. And also meeting your nephew/not really nephew Megumi Fushiguro.
notes: I'm probably not gonna upload for a solid month after this chapter, or maybe after the 3rd chapter's done idk. maki and the gang pull up in the next chapter, and GODDAMN, she is RUDE. but its funny
she's gonna be like that probably until before yuta pulls up once we get to the jjk0 storyline- another thing to note is that since jjh is a year round school, they likely start school in may because they have a summer uniform, winter uniform, blah blah, you get it
After that first very impressionable meeting with your long-lost half-brother, he wasted no time in gaining guardianship over you.
He gained it rather quickly actually.
Even you were surprised as to how fast he gained it, but he has both connections, proof of his relation to you, and money to make it faster.
So after a month or two and him coming back every week, he could finally say he became your legal guardian, and he talked to both your aunt and you about moving to Japan with him.
Sure, you have no idea as to how to speak Japanese, but you'll go to school, learn there as he helps you as well.
Over the course of the next few weeks, you packed up most of your things and moved to Japan with him.
Tokyo, Japan.
You don't want to be one of those people who acts all weird with it, but for the first few months of living there, you definitely did. Not to mention that Satoru never once mentioned Megumi and Tsumiki while he was talking all about Japan.
Your first meeting with Megumi wasn't too bad. The boy stayed pretty quiet the whole time.
“So.. Do you like comics?”
You tentatively ask, as he raises his head slightly, looking as if he's thinking about this.
“..yeah. The new 52 Batman comics are my favorites.” You grin, seeing the corner of Megumi’s lips turn up. It seems he's glad enough to have someone new in the house who likes comics.
“Awesome. I personally like the Civil War book that came out a long ass while ago. Cap dies, but I think that's fine. We need more permanent deaths in comics anyways.”
He nods his head in agreement, as you continue to talk about the 2006 Civil War comic.
‘She seems pretty cool.’
He's not going to say that out loud though. Megumi already kind of is starting to like you, and that's saying something. Maybe it's because you're very close to his age, or because you're not hounding him with questions on basically one of your first meetings.
“Anything else you like? ‘Cause I have a lot more I could talk about.”
You smile, and now Megumi can definitely tell you're related to Satoru. Both your tendencies to talk seem similar, even when you're clearly asking him if he'd like to talk more.
And he's glad for that. He's glad you're a little like Satoru, but not enough like him that you're unbearable to talk to or be next to.
Even then, Megumi contemplates your question for another few moments, thinking of something else he actually enjoys. His voice comes out a little quieter than normal, as he scratches his chin for a moment.
“Well, I also like Iron Man. The movies are pretty cool. The Avengers movie was awesome too.”
Common interests make this bonding with Megumi easier than he would make it normally. He's quiet, sometimes unusually so, but that's fine by you. It's nice to have someone to share opinions with- Even if they're very opinionated like Megumi’s.
You're sure you can get along with Megumi quite easily.
——
A few days later, after Satoru comes back from his business trip, he sits you down to talk to you, one on one. In a serious tone, he speaks, sitting down at a table across from you.
“We need to talk.”
His hands are interlocked in front of him, as his face forms into a serious look. He's really trying not to smile at all.
It doesn't make you nervous per say, but it does make you narrow your eyes at him as you start to suspect something. Satoru isn't very good at being serious in these types of situations, so this is killing him.
“So, I'm sure you have no idea what I do when I leave, right?” He's referring to his “business trips”, so you nod your head. He seems to understand, and keeps talking. “I would guess so. Anyways, you don't know what Jujutsu is, do you?”
At this point, you just stare at him with a ‘Are you fucking stupid?’ look. Of course you have no idea what that is.
“What the fuck is “Jujutsu"? Fightin’ style?”
You narrow your eyes at him, eyebrows slightly furrowed in confusion. You've only ever heard of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and those pretty much sound the same. That's probably what he's referring to, right?
“No, no, it's something else. It's kind of like super powers.” He watches you for a moment, watching you burst out into laughter shortly after his words.
Satoru's serious gaze doesn't falter, even when he already probably would've burst into laughter himself as well, but he wants to introduce you to this, because he can definitely sense a huge amount of cursed energy from your body. Especially a few months ago, when you were still reeling back from your mother's death.
“I want you to take this seriously.”
His words coupled with his tone makes you stop laughing, and instead pay heavy attention to his next words.
He’s never done anything to lose your trust, and he's certainly never lied to you (so far). So when he asks you to take him seriously, no matter the topic.
So after that, he starts yapping all about jujutsu, curses, the Jujutsu society, and the fact that because you have blood of the Gojo Clan in your veins, you have the extreme potential to be one of the strongest Sorcerers of this generation.
In all seriousness, you don't believe him for a good while. Until you try touching him to slap him (as a joke) and you can't touch him.
You can't touch him because of his Infinity. He explains it to you, both Infinity and his cursed technique: Limitless. Not just Limitless, but his Six Eyes technique.
He first explained that the Six Eyes and the Limitless come together in one sorcerer every 400 years. He’s an extremely rare case of a sorcerer: possessing two techniques in one brain. Then he explains it all a bit more in depth, then moves onto you. He’s not sure if you’re like him- in the sense that your eyes sense cursed energy better than a regular sorcerer would. But then again, he has noticed your narrowed eyes around both him and Megumi quite a lot. Your squinting eyes can only lead him to the assumption that you see cursed energy better, like he does.
He didn’t want that for you, but it’s too late now. At least now, Satoru can teach you how to control and harness your cursed energy- not to mention, give you his old high school glasses to help you with the overload of cursed energy, and just overall your eyes being sensitive to many forms of different things. Like him.
——
And so, as soon as he got some time off and a safe spot to help you start to work on your jujutsu, he got right on it. Honestly, Megumi is slightly surprised that Satoru’s doing all of this, but he knows the man isn’t cold-hearted. Quite the opposite. Satoru took him in, so he knows firsthand how generous he can be, even if he’s a bit childish at times.
Right off the bat, he teaches you how to channel your cursed energy; how to not be wasteful with it, especially considering your overwhelming amount of it- from what he can tell, with his blindfold/glasses on or off.
It’s not tough to learn it, but the hardest part is mastering it by repeating it over and over. All it is is using your negative emotions and channeling them into a layer of cursed energy over your body.
Over and over. Satoru had you practice channeling cursed energy into your fists, hitting him with his Infinity up, even if it did nothing. After all, it didn't do ‘nothing’. It helped you practice CE manipulation, and helped you control your emotions, especially your grief after your mother’s death.
“The body is the soul, and the soul is the body. If you don’t understand that, you don’t understand the basic principle of jujutsu.” He’s a good teacher when it comes to application and technique. After all, he’s been a jujutsu sorcerer ever since he could use his techniques. And you…
He didn’t even know what cursed technique you had until around a year after the initial start of your training. And when he found out what it was, he was absolutely thrilled. The technique itself was Special Grade 1, and with your mastery so far, how well you’ve exceeded on the minor missions Satoru sent you and Megumi on to test your skills, and the knowledge of jujutsu you have- even after only a year- you’re already definitely top tier Grade 1 material.
Not to mention your skills in martial arts; with boxing as your primary, Muay Thai for more power in the weaker areas, and karate for leg strikes.
As for your CT…
Cursed Technique: Time Dilation.
Your CT is one of the most powerful- but volatile- techniques. A user of Time Dilation hasn’t been heard of or seen since the Heian Era. Already, Satoru knows you’re a slight danger- or at least he knows that’s how the jujutsu higher-ups will see it.
With the power of your CT, you have the ability to slow time to almost a halt, and at your current mastery, only for around maybe 2-3 seconds per usage.
You have potential. Great potential. Just like him.
Just like Satoru Gojo.

Chapter 19: Joint Custody
“There’s nothing to discuss, General Ardmore.” Quaritch eventually managed to find the words after a few moments of shock at not only the subject of Spider’s guardian, but Nash McCosker’s presence for it. “Spider is on the road to recovery, albeit with some bumps along the way. His primary care team have suggested some medications he can try to control the outbursts.  I have him scheduled for an E.E.T to determine his level of education. If need be, I’ll enroll him with virtual professors-”
“Don’t waste your time.” McCosker interrupted, crossing his arms and looking back up at the recom, “That boy gave up on learning anything past the age of 12. All he cared about was being out in the forest.”
“As his former guardian, that sounds like your fault for not enforcing his education.” Quaritch growled back.
McCosker grit his teeth, having a hell of a lot more courage in Ardmore’s office than he did in the interview room. He retorted with a gruff raspiness, “Couldn’t get much in through that thick skull when he would pay attention.”
“Again, sounds like your fault for failing him.” Quaritch growled again, ears pinning back.
“No worse than his parents did.” McCosker snapped back quickly. It was like he was taking every opportunity to tell the closest thing to the dead human Quaritch what he really felt. But before Quaritch could lose his temper anymore by the quick thrash of his tail, Ardmore cleared his throat.
“Gentlemen, this isn’t about the boy’s past.” Ardmore reasoned like she was ending a squabble between children, “Colonel Quaritch has made it abundantly clear, against my better judgement, to take Miles Socorro under his wing and it has been done in a civilized and legal manner. At least as far as the RDA’s PR department is concerned. But all that effort will be wasted if this child is deemed more of a distraction or threat to RDA operations. Including pulling top men from the field ahead of schedule because of a little panic attack.”
Now Quaritch’s anger was directed at the general. He knew returning from the mission early was going to come back and bite him in the tail. He tempered his tone quickly before explaining, “Spider wasn’t just experiencing a panic attack, ma’am. I provided a medical update with my closing mission report. He was suffering migraines and an unexplained onset of heightened levels of paranoia. Given his condition and the lack of risk to my men, I entrusted them to finish the remaining trek home under Corporal Wainfleet.”
Ardmore stared at him, studying him like a cell under a microscope. Quaritch knew she was looking for emotional tells...cracks in the armor. The armor Quaritch had become to protect Spider. It was clear to anyone with eyes how much the boy had come to mean to him over the last couple months. Some people said it was guilt; others said he was trying to make up for lost time. There was even a rumor that it was all just a ruse to put the boy back together enough just to break him all over again for information...
“But again, gentlemen,” Ardmore continued, “This isn’t about the past; this is about a sixteen-year-old boy’s future and welfare. It’s clear he needs constant guardianship. Security acting as babysitters isn’t going to protect him or this base, colonel.”
“Nash McCosker is no father to Spider.” Quaritch said affirmatively.
“Nor are you, Miles.” Ardmore said so casually it made Quaritch want to slam his fists on her desk as quickly as he’d ripped the table from its bolts when McCosker stated his boy should have been put down.
When did Spider become his boy? How long did it take for his views of the kid being nothing more than a pain in the ass to someone he would risk break protocol and orders for?
“What I have determined is not a complete transition of custody, but stand-in guardianship while you’re in the field.” Ardmore said as she calmly looked from Quaritch to McCosker. “After some extensive discussions following the incident in the mess, Mr. McCosker has volunteered for this task.”
“Why?” Quaritch couldn’t even snap his teeth shut fast enough to stop the word from coming out as he too whipped his gaze down to the man.
“I didn’t always do right by the kid and I’m betting he, or some side of him, is just waiting to stab me in the back, but I know Miles better than anyone here.” McCosker answered lowly, keeping eye contact with the imposing colonel.
“If you knew him better, you’d know to call him Spider.” Quaritch hissed.
Silence fell between the two men and the general just watched. She was waiting for the next move. Quaritch knew she was moving her pieces around the board, and he was starting to get cornered. A question was burning in his mind...but he couldn’t ask it.
“You realize he could kill you? Leave your wife a widow and your kids without their father?  And I don’t mean Spider when I say that...you gotta deal with Miles when that time comes.” the recom said quietly, backing down to avoid complete defeat on the matter. If he refused the terms, Spider would likely be taken away for good. And even if the boy didn’t end up with the poor excuse of a turncoat before him, no one else in Bridgehead would protect him.
“I know the risks,” McCosker said with more finality than Quaritch was expecting, “I read the incident report and saw the brain scans. I may not have always been the best for him, but I sure as hell never broke him like that either...”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The fact that Quaritch did not rip off both McCosker’s AND Ardmore’s head after the meeting about Spider’s future custodial arrangements was a miracle. Maybe that Eywa fairytale Spider always talked about gave him enough control not to get himself and the boy in some seriously deep shit. Ardmore explained how it would all go down. It wouldn’t be an instantaneous transition. They had to reintroduce Spider and McCosker in a controlled setting first...
The recom cursed under his breath when he checked his watch. It was almost 1430. He completely missed lunch with the squad and Spider’s E.E.T. Even though he knew Wainfleet would pick up where he left off, Quaritch still felt guilty for breaking the promise to the kid that he would go to the testing with him. He was relieved when he returned to the recom barracks to hear laughing and jeering.
“Four of a kind, bitch.” Spider said smugly as he threw a poker hand down on the table with Mansk, Lopez, and Zdinarsk. Based on the laughter at Lopez’s expense and him cursing in Spanish, it was clear he’d been dethroned as the squad’s resident poker king. Even kneeling on the chair at the recom-sized table, Spider looked like he belonged there. He smirked and looked mock offended at something Lopez said, “I am not counting cards, you just suck!”
“You speak Spanish too?” Lopez said, realizing that every quip he’d made about the punk the last few months didn’t go unheard.
“I speak twelve languages, actually.” Spider said matter-of-factly.
“Thank god we’re not betting against the kid...” Wainfleet grumbled as he got up from the couch when Quaritch came in.
“He looks ok.” Quaritch observed, watching Spider start spitting out fluent Spanish and started what he assumed was a playful argument with Lopez.
“Yea, he’s good, boss. He ate a good meal then I took him to his test. Finished it in twenty minutes!  He was bored as hell waiting for the hour timer to go off.” Wainfleet reported.
“Twenty minutes? Did he even read the damn thing?” Quaritch said and looking to his friend, this bit of info concerning him. He thought about what McCosker said. That Spider had ‘stopped learning’ at 12. He sighed deeply and asked, “What grade do I have to put him in?”
“Depends.” Wainfleet said with a cocky grin and pulled his tablet out of his cargo pocket, “You want him to get his bachelor’s degree or go straight for a doctorate?”
Quaritch stared at Wainfleet, speechless at the question. It wasn’t until the corporal brought up the test results that tallied up after the timer ended. His golden eyes scanned over the results and every category was checked off as exceeds expectations or greater. Quaritch didn’t think Spider was dumb by any sense of the words, but this?! This is not what he was expecting...and he scolded himself for letting that fucker McCosker make him doubt his boy in any way.
“Wait...” Quaritch said, ears flicking back and raising an eyebrow as he pointed at a number at the bottom of the results, “Is this accurate?”
“Yes, sir.” Wainfleet said, knowing his friend was swelling with pride but hiding it when he confirmed. “142. That’s his IQ, boss.”
“Kid’s a fucking genius...” Quaritch said, cold dread spreading through his body about not only the physical damage the boy suffered at the hands of the RDA but now the literal mental assault. The potential this boy had was almost destroyed by his serious lack of judgement.
“Koaktan!” Spider’s voice rose above the others and across the room to Quaritch’s ears. He had a sly grin and held up the deck of cards. “You in? I mean, supposedly , Lopez is the best card player you got but I need to make sure by kicking all of your asses.”
With a pat on his back as Wainfleet took back the tablet, Quaritch nodded and walked over to the table. But he couldn’t hide the surprise and admiration on his face looking at Spider. The expression made the teen’s eyes dart around before he asked, “What?”
“Nothin’, kid...Lopez just talks too much.” the colonel said as he pulled out an empty chair, “Deal me in, smartass.”
Spider just chuckled as he rolled his eyes and shuffled the cards. Quaritch and him would talk after he had a little more time of carefree fun.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“General, I hate to agree with the man, but...the colonel is right.” McCosker said as he sat slumped in a chair in her office after Quaritch left. “That kid is going to kill me.”
“Mr. McCosker, you’ve lived here a lot longer than most so you know everything on this planet wants to kill any one of us if given the chance. You’re just fortunate to have a controlled threat.” Ardmore said, completely unmoved by McCosker’s concern, “The colonel is right about another thing and that’s that you have a history of changing loyalties.”
“Mistakes were made.” McCosker said quickly, as if that was enough to convince Ardmore that he felt remorse for being part of the first round of rebel scientists fifteen years prior.
“Then consider this a chance to fix them.” Ardmore said, leaning back in her own chair and slowly rapping her fingertips on the arm of it, “Spider may not be willing to give anything up, but that doesn’t mean one of his ‘other sides’ will be as loyal.”

Fun Fax: OLM Chapter 6
Jin’s injuries have caused such a particular timeline of events in my head its kinda stupid, im hyperaware of how they would realistically heal and what he can and cannot do in this time, its driving me nuts lol! stuck between writing realistic injury/recovery stuff, and this being freaking tekken. help.
the thing with Jin’s flame trainers is of course directly lifted from Bloodline, i like that they felt the need to add detail when it came to one of his biggest monikers. unlike with Bloodline, tho, he actually gets what he wants cause we dont have Heihachi as the one calling the shots
i mention kata a LOT in this fic, apparently, and i wish i had any kind of reference for what a Mishima-Ryu kata truly might be. only knowing Isshin-Ryu myself, i imagine Kusanku and Chinto (Shotokan style) kata especially in reference to Kazuya! (for the record, i think of Sanchin and Seiyunchin (Goju-Ryu style) for Heihachi. i could go into a lot more on this subject, but both these styles are p rooted in their playstyles!) apologies to anyone who doesnt know much about martial arts for real 😬
do i look like i know anything about ward/guardianship proceedings? no, im keeping it vague on purpose. if you know anything on the subject i am truly sorry but im not writing a legal drama we have to kill the demon
Kazuya is such a dick it drives me insane 💀 hes so fun to write, but like Jin, im over here wanting to strangle him during this chapter. stop trying to make him mad and just be a dad wont you 😭 (extra, my beta said “ive decided i hate this man” while reading his convo with Jin hsdfdn)
speaking of which, i found the first time he takes on the dad tone when Jin gets caught eavesdropping so funny to me for no reason sdfds
unfortunately, i found myself very exasperated with this chapter when i finally posted it. im finding my issues in pacing a lot more now that im actually getting into stuff, and its a little discouraging tbh. but we persist! trying to find a balance between throwing in the towel and being at peace with the fact that this isnt going to be perfect. its my first long fic, after all, and the weight of that is starting to land lol

Tim did his best not to react as he heard Harley stop herself from saying his name. She must have figured it out. Wouldn't have been too hard; she'd known Bruce and from there had probably guessed Dick and then learned that her ex had killed Jason. Now granted, Tim was something of a media hermit so he wasn't seen with Bruce much, not to mention he'd never been adopted despite them having that conversation about the possibility. Perhaps it was just... process of elimination? It wasn't too hard to find out that Bruce had been given some legal guardianship over him after his mother died and his father was in recovery. Didn't stop it from being disconcerting that Harley had almost said his name.
"He's a civilian actually... and has no idea I do this." He started, slow and shy. "Actually, we've only spoken online. He's a local, goes to a different school but he believes I'm at school in Europe somewhere. He knows my first name. We watch a lot of movies together when I'm not drowning in homework or patrol."
The bo staff was pulled out of its pouch on his leg, the weapon twirling slowly and expertly between glove fingers and no where Harley. Not a thread, if anything he seemed to be using it as a fidget toy.
"I've looked him up so I know what he looks like. He's... really pretty. Shares a couple of surface characteristics with an ex of mine so I think I have a type."
“It ain’t all bad. I mean sure, ya get carded for alcohol ‘til you’re thirty, but at the same time people are always impressed by your age when ya tell ‘em.” Harley’s shoulders rose in a shrug before fishing the other fry off her lip and placing it in her mouth.
Her smile grew and her eyes lit up as she slowly turned to face Robin. “Ya have a boyfriend? That’s so cute! Is he a hero too? No, wait, ya don’t have to tell me, I’m just so happy for ya!” She pulled him into a quick tight hug before letting him go again with a shake of her head. “Nuh, uh. Not kickin’ ya into any hole. And I’m not gonna be blabbin’ about your romantic life to anyone either. I’m just glad ya have somebody T-er-Robin.” Harley stuffed more popcorn into her mouth to shut herself up.

i wish this was spoilers for t&b2 2nd cour but its not. i just wish yuri adopted lara because her mother sucks. i think yuri would be a great dad despite him probably not believing he can be an explicitly positive influence on anyones life...
i think yuri would uniquely understand lara because theyve experienced some similar things in their lives (awful parents & accidental manslaughter in self-defense)
this is just an AU but huge spoiler warning for t&b 2nd cour happenings under the cut where i explain this AU in more detail (seriously dont read unless you already saw the 2nd cour):
again if you clicked the readmore open on accident, implied and explicitly stated huge massive spoilers for t&b2 2nd cour just below this text.
-
first of all, did i cry while drawing this? yeah. dude i am not coping....
anyways i cant get over the fact that lara killed a villain in self-defense and on accident in the 1st cour and it wasnt brought up again, she was just fine about it. plus im seething that her mother “cared about lara for real actually”, or so i understood and i dont feel like rewatching that. i dont have any sympathy for her mom...
i think the only person who could possibly know half of it and also understand lara is yuri, in regards to awful parenting and killing someone as a child in self-defense both.
yuri definitely has looked up laras information and is at least peripherally aware of her mothers circumstances, etc, we know for a fact yuri keeps up-to-date on classified information on the heroes, and just in the 1st cour he was effortlessly holding a law class for children.
i think laras mother couldve given her an ultimatum on how she is her mother and legally lara cant really do anything without a guardian- shes 14, so i dont think she can be a hero without her parents approval, and realistically paolin couldnt whisk lara away from her legal guardian no matter how much she wanted to help.
given an ultimatum from laras mother, i think paolin shouldve definitely tried to whisk lara away in the childish sense of “lets run out of here now, i dont have time to think it through but i dont want to let your horrible mother take you to a different city to put you through all of this again because i care about you”.
its not realistic, of course, and i think paolin would be aware enough of it and also retroactive enough to seek help she can think of: agnes and yuri, who are her superiors and the first authority figures she can think of since the heroes are more familiar to her
i do want to think the heroes would have some sort of legislature considering child heroes, that while imperfect (obviously, since why do child heroes exist in the first place...) are in some ways effective in protecting the rights of underage heroes, including something that makes sure theyre not manipulated in their position or somesuch.
i think the legislature would allow the judicial bureau to immediately restrict the activities of a hero if applicable and place them under alternative guardianship and for the reasons of yuri ending up as laras guardian, include something that the guardianship can be immediately transferred if a suitable guardian is found (has to be a higher-up or somesuch to begin with maybe)
its just for plot reasonings, though, and similarly i think laras mother would realize where paolin mustve taken lara and follow the two girls.
i think yuri couldve lost his mother shortly before this, but in any case, agnes isnt evil but she really doesnt feel like someone who wants to take care of a child. in a moment of weakness and his sense of justice and personal trauma, i think yuri would sign the motion and when questioned who the guardian may be, he just says its him.
i like to think he wouldnt have let laras mother take her, not after any hurried explanation from paolin and just laras body language around her mother...
which yuri regrets immediately afterwards mostly because he doesnt see himself suitable to take care of anyone any longer, even if his mothers death doesnt have anything to do with him etc.
lara would definitely think yuri is scary and intimidating, and he can be very stoic, but hes not cruel at all. lara could hug him without permission and scare herself, especially with how she got tears and snot all over his suit. yuri would be surprised by a hug but only because he doesnt know how to deal with positive things happening to him, and the rest of it is quite alright.
as it turns out, hes actually very kind and very mindful of laras feelings, whereas lara has never been in a position where she has felt free to express herself in any negative manner without being reprimanded and controlled by her mother.
yuri is also undeniably a foil to kotetsu in many ways, and to have him assume a parental role with a child would be very fitting. in contrast to kotetsus mother and bother supporting him freely and kaede being his biological child, yuri is inadvertently making his own family after fully losing it (in more ways than one, by having terrible experiences and quite literally his parents dying) by growing very fond of lara.
and i think kotetsus career in heroism has led to him at times neglect kaede, especially when she didnt know about his hero identity (despite his best efforts, because hes been so busy). yuri, however, would be such a wonderful parental figure in every way in a relatively effortless way, even if he may appear distant at times- he would just be worried about lara.
but i think lara would grow to trust him quickly, because he doesnt raise his voice nor punish her, and hes very gentle despite his meticulous demeanor.
yuri getting enrichment in his cage of sorrows because somehow, due to this, hes breaking the cycles that have kept him captive his entire life. he becomes gentler with himself because of lara talking about her feelings to him and he has to accept that if it was not a sin for lara to have killed in self-defense, perhaps he can truly forgive himself for his original sin.
i think lara couldve been cleared fit for herowork again, but yuri sees her hesitancy and asks her whats wrong, and lara would trust him enough to dare to eventually admit that she doesnt want yuri to abandon her because she cant be useful as a hero anymore, but that she doesnt even want to be a hero.
her heroism was her mothers dream, and after what happened to her and accidental manslaughter, she doesnt want anything to do with hero work on the field anymore.
it wouldve been refreshing to have someone who just doesnt want to be a hero anymore, for very understandable reasons. yuri wouldnt have been angry with her, he wouldve told her that she doesnt have to be a hero if she doesnt want to. she doesnt have to be anything... and what she experienced on the field was undeniably frightening, even without her mother having pushed her into the hero career.
and anyways, at that point, lara could just say she wishes yuri was her dad and cause yuri enter such an emotional turmoil he doesnt know what to do with himself but in a way thats somehow positive.
he would have his own reservations about it, but like, thats something hed solve by himself instead of dumping it on lara.
paolin wouldnt have been disappointed in lara either, and whereas laras mother things you have to pick between things, paolin wouldve respected laras wishes and assured her that of course theyll be best buddies forever, even if she ends up getting a new buddy hero partner. she doesnt have to choose between friends, she can be friends with multiple people at once.
i think lara couldve just become yuris daughter. yuris ties are as garish as they have always been, but theyre so cutesy now because he lets lara pick them. he has ties with hearts and flowers and stars and licensed cartoon characters. all of his private folders are now marked with cute stickers in addition to the meticulous numbering system he uses.
lara couldve been part of the whole message of “you can still be a hero even if you dont have X power or do X things”, because even if her NEXT ability is powerful, she just doesnt have the will to be a superhero. instead she would be free to choose her own path and i think she still wouldve wanted to help people some way: maybe she wouldve gotten interested in yuris career as a judge and study hard so that she could be just like him.
t&b really hasnt had anyone who has just given up on heroism, and sometimes “giving up” is the kindest thing you can do to yourself... and i just feel if theres someone else who would benefit seeing “giving up” as something positive, its yuri. because hes so strict with himself.
it wouldve been lovely to see him gain some more substance in his life and for him to see that even if he doesnt feel that way, he can be kind and gentle and a positive influence on someones life, because hes not an awful person...
like my status if you cried lol (yeah im fucking crying btw)

Anakin and the Jedi Babies: A Child's Ink
Context: Anakin and the Jedi Babies, chrono
WARNINGS: underage characters get tattoos/piercings
Word Count: 5680 Rating: T Ships: primarily Gen (Disaster Lineage + Shmi), offscreen JangoShmi, past Obitine, past Anidala ----
Ylliben Skywalker is known as a preternaturally calm and quiet child, serious and pensive.
He jokes. He roughhouses. He is as responsive to tickle attacks and shoulder rides and warm hugs as any other child.
But he is Jetii'Manda, not just Mando'ade, and that fact is impossible to forget.
This is a child that can read before he can speak, a child who can talk at length about 'grassroots antiestablishment propaganda and its influence on rural sociological development' before he can say the words without a lisp. This is a child who looks a man in the eye and tells him to check over his blaster one last time, or it will explode in his hand only minutes into the next engagement. This is a child who is not only willing, but capable of discussing the plausible ramifications of Duke Adonai Kryze's latest decrees with Jaster Mereel himself, while still in possession of all his baby teeth.
(His father is not worried by this. Upset, sometimes, pained and tired, but not worried.)
(His sister only laughs.)
It is, as a result, not as surprising as it could be, when a six-year-old wanders his way into Na-Tsuyon's parlor and asks her what the risks of getting a tattoo at his age are.
"I'm not having that conversation with you unless your parent is here," she says. A few of the other artists crane their heads in her direction, but she waves them off.
"I'm not trying to get it right this moment," Ben protests. "I'm just gathering information. He said that was fine."
"Still need your parent here here," she tells him.
He leaves for about ten minutes, and then comes back with a tall, gangling figure in tow.
"I hear this isn't the place for unaccompanied minors," Knight Skywalker jokes.
(She has heard him called a General. She does not know which war he fought. Nobody does.)
(They no longer ask.)
"Well, he is young," she says, brushing her tentacles back over a shoulder. "I don't let anyone under human-fourteen get tattooed without a parent on hand, and giving preliminary information to anyone under twelve is... generally not worth it, shall we say."
Skywalker smiles, oddly amused in the way he always is when someone points out his children need supervision. "Glad to hear it. Are you the Na-Tsuyon whose name is on the door?"
"I am," she says. "And you're Knight Skywalker."
He's pleased at that. She can feel it in the chemical receptors of her head tails, and wonders. "Yep. So, do we jump right into the discussion or do you need me to sign something, or..."
"No, it's enough that you're here," she assures him. "Now, the main reasons we discourage tattoos for younger sentients is the distortion factor. While the level of pain is much lower than it would have been several millennia ago, and we have the technology to remove ink from below the skin, a tattoo before your body stops growing will distort as you grow and your skin stretches. You would need to come in yearly for touch-ups, to remove the sections that have moved out of place, and fill in where the ink is no longer settled."
"That makes sense," Ylliben says. He looks up at his father, and then back to her. "You'd be able to tell me if any of my choices would be... bad for a Mandalorian, yes?"
"I would," she confirms. She glances up at Knight Skywalker. "I don't suppose you have any history of getting tattoos?"
"No," he says. "I'm from Tatooine, so..."
Different connotations to the very act of it, for him.
She ducks her head in a nod. "I understand. Generally it's easier if the parent has experience in the process, but it's far from mandatory. You're willing to work with the distortion maintenance?"
"Yes'm," Ylliben says, and his father shrugs and gestures, as if the word of a six-year-old is thus law.
"I'll walk you through the details of the process, including the care, relevant allergies, and so on. I don't suppose you have anything in mind already?" she asks.
"I do," he says. He doesn't tell her what it is, yet.
Anakin Skywalker stays there the entire time, and they make an appointment for later in the week.
----
"My buir isn't my only father," Ylliben says quietly, when it comes time to get details on what he's getting tattooed. "I had another father before him. A Jedi. He died, to protect me, and a lot of other people. So, um..."
He shoves a picture to her, the symbol of the Jedi, plain and simple. She looks at him.
"In red," he says, shifting on his feet, looking up at his father and then back down at the page. "For, um, to honor a parent."
"Your first father was a Jedi?" she asks, gentle as she can.
"Mm-hm," Ylliben says. "He died, um... he saved buir from slavery, too, a long time ago. Both my dads were Jedi, and I'm going to be one, too, and so is Sokanth. It's--it's about where I come from, and--"
"You don't have to justify it if you don't want to," Na-Tsuyon tells him, reaching out to place one hand on his. It's very warm and dry, in her opinion, but she finds that most humans are. Mandalorians are some 80% human, or near human.
Nautolan Mandalorians aren't unheard of, but she's a rare one.
Ben sucks in a breath, and says, "I want it up here, on my right shoulder, like a pauldron."
Na-Tsuyon nods, and looks up to Skywalker. "You'll have to sign some papers to approve it, Master Jedi. You approve of the design?"
Skywalker hesitates, and then goes to one knee in front of his son, and speaks so quietly she can only hear "--remind you of the generator complex?"
Whatever Ben's answer is, it's too quiet for her to catch. It satisfies Skywalker, though, and he stands. "Alright, let's see this paperwork."
----
When Ylliben comes in again, a year later to get his slightly-twisting tattoo fixed, it's with Miss Shmi in tow. Na-Tsuyon greets the middle Skywalker, for all that she's still not entirely sure how to address the girl. "I heard you've been attending the university at Sundari. Some kind of engineering?"
"Mechanical, yes," Shmi says, oddly soft. "I'm going to spend another year to specialize in vehicular engineering. I'd like to design starships, since I already know how to fix them."
"A worthy goal," Na-Tsuyon says, as she leads them over to one of the stations and starts sanitizing Ylliben's inked shoulder. She doesn't entirely see why a university education is needed for something that, in her opinion, an apprenticeship could more thoroughly cover. It certainly worked well enough Na-Tsuyon herself. "You're on vacation, then?"
"I am," Shmi confirms. "It's... unfortunate that Anakin couldn't be here a the same time, but we'll see each other in a few days."
Ylliben fidgets for a bit as his jedi symbol is fixed, and then finally asks, "Ori'vod can approve new tattoos, right?"
"Sokanth, no. Shmi..." Na-Tsuyon looks up at her. "I have no idea if you're listed as his legal guardian anywhere, and I'd need proof of that."
"Secondary to Anakin," Shmi confirms. "Ben would like this to be a surprise for Ani."
Ben pulls out a sheet, with a careful design on it, and presses it into Na-Tsuyon's lap when she lifts the tattoo gun and he's not at risk of ruining his own ink. It's simpler than the Jedi symbol, though it's two colors instead of one.
"It's the Open Circle Fleet," Ben says, shy in a way she's given to understand he usually isn't. She thinks his shyer moments may be connected to admitting to emotion, something that he's tying quite closely to his choice of Tattoos. "I thought, um, since I'm already--already honoring one buir, then, er..."
"The Open Circle Fleet was under the command of my brother's Jedi Master," Shmi explains, one hand on Ben's. "And I am given to understand that the symbol was designed as a subtle nod, of sorts, to the two of them as a team. Ben's looking to honor Anakin as he has his first father."
Ben looks down at his lap, and doesn't meet Na-Tsuyon's eyes.
"Bring me proof of guardianship," she tells them. "And I'll make sure you get it finished early enough that the bacta comes off before Knight Skywalker makes it home."
She holds true to her word, and talks her way into being there to see the reunion and reveal.
The emotions that cross Skywalker's face are complicated and unexpected in ways that she can't identify.
Then it's all too simple, because he starts crying on little Ylliben in the middle of the hangar.
----
It doesn't take a full year for Ylliben to come in for another set. It's only five months, maybe six. He has a sketch again, a geometric design of something she doesn't recognize, but still pings as familiar for some reason.
"It needs to be the right shade of blue," he tells her, serious as anything. Knight Skwyalker is right next to him, smiling all soft and indulgent, and maybe a little sad. "It's for Soka."
Oh. This is based on her facial markings, then. Or... what they will be, maybe. This doesn't look quite like what she's seen on the girl, but everyone knows little Ben is more touched by visions than his father and sister.
Na-Tsuyon thinks she knows where this is going. "The same blue as her montrals and lekku?"
Ben shakes his head. "No, 501st blue."
Or not.
"It's close, but a little darker and more saturated," Skywalker offers, and shrugs when she looks his way. "It's a long story, but the 501st was the legion I led before I arrived at Mandalore. It had a specific shade of blue assigned for armor paint, so legions could easily identify each other in the field."
That's... odd. She doesn't ask for more detail, though. It's not her business. "Where do you want this one?"
Ben shows her his left forearm and frames a section about two-thirds the length of it, along the outer side. Like a vambrace.
She has a feeling all these symbols will be on his armor, once he's old enough for it.
"Let's go through my inks and see which one will work best," she says, and does not comment on the rest.
----
When Ylliben comes in again, a few months before his next touch-up appointment, he doesn't have an image on hand. His father is trailing him again, and Na-Tsuyon has a guess.
"Time for Shmi?" she asks.
Ben ducks his head, flushing and not meeting Na-Tsuyon's eyes. "Yes'm."
"I thought as much," she says, and smiles at Skywalker. "General."
"Don't start."
"There have been oh so many rumors flying since the last Jedi run-in, you know."
"I don't care," he grouses, dropping into a seat. "Hells, a man takes emergency command for one battle, and it's all anyone can talk about."
"You ended a civil war, sir."
Ben giggles into his hands as Skywalker groans and slaps a hand over his eyes.
"No respect," the man complains. "Ben, be nice to me, I'm your dad."
"Nuh-uh," Ben says. "I know all the most embarrassing secrets."
"A cruel child," Skywalker accuses. "Ruthless."
"You're the one raising me," Ben says, swinging his legs back and forth. He's got plastoid training vambraces, now, and greaves that clink against the legs of the chair.
"Somehow, yes." Skywalker sighs, with great drama and all such things. He drags himself up to sitting. "Anyway. Moving on."
"Do you have something in mind already?" Na-Tsuyon asks.
"Binary suns," Ben says. "Just two overlapping circles, coin-sized, one bigger than the other, in sunset colors. In a gradient, with a sort of... flare to it? Halo? The... oh! The stellar corona. Buir knows the colors better."
"I want to see what you have to work with before I sketch out the design," Skywalker says. "But yeah, sort of pink and yellow and peachy."
"I can do almost any color," Na-Tsuyon promises. "Especially on fair human skin like Ylliben's. I won't have a problem getting those to show up the way I would on myself."
Na-Tsuyon is a color most would call 'aquamarine.' She's a light shade between blue and green, and much as she likes her skin, it's an absolute pain to make red and orange show up.
She can do it.
It's just annoying.
Ben asks for this one to be on the inside of the left forearm, high and opposite to the widest point of the mark for Sokanth.
----
"Can I see your fonts?"
Ben's alone, for the moment, but Na-Tsuyon knows that when he makes his decision, his father or Shmi will approve it without question. It's no harm to let him browse.
"Basic, Mando'a, or Huttese alphabet?" she asks. "Or something more esoteric?"
"Mando'a, please."
He's eight years old, now. He's still far younger than most of her clients, but she's long gotten used to him. Even when he's acting like a child, there's something to it that doesn't quite sit right. 'Born middle-aged,' a few of the other civilians on base had joked.
She wasn't sure if she thought it was just a joke, these days.
Na-Tsuyon passes her fonts book to the boy, and settles back in her chair for a long afternoon of running numbers. He, meanwhile, goes to sit in the lobby, legs still not long enough to reach the floor, paging through with unwavering, unsettling gravitas.
Half an hour, and then Ben returns.
He points to a font. "This one."
"What's it going to say?"
"Vode An," he tells her, as serious as can be. "In black, over my heart. It's important."
"It's a fairly common phrase," she notes idly. "Should be quick."
She doesn't expect much of a response, and certainly not the one she gets.
"It was different for them," Ben mutters, not looking at her. She sees him twisting the toes of one shoe into the floor. "It was... it was different. I can't talk about it. They were brothers, actually brothers, and they had--they had nothing, they were basically slaves, but--"
"You don't have to talk about it," Na-Tsuyon assures him, a hand on his. "You don't have to explain it to me. If it means something to you, that's all that matters. I just need you to be sure."
"And buir to sign the paperwork," Ben quips, smiling at her. She notices that several teeth are missing. It's cute. "You need that too."
"That too," she agrees.
When Skywalker shows up, he hears what it is that Ben would like, and makes a few suggestions for a border--a gear that sounded too much like the Republic's symbol for a Mando'a phrase, a building on stilts from a city she's never heard of on a planet that rings no bells, a human genetic strand for reasons she can't imagine--most of which are soundly ignored, until Skywalker sketched out a stylized ship of... some sort.
"Venator," Skywalker says, and taps the image. "Nobody will know it except us, but it'll mean something to you, for them."
Ben looks at it for a long moment, and then takes the scrap of flimsi with Mando'a on it and lays it overtop the center of the sketch.
He stares at it for a few long moments, and then nods sharply and pushes it to Na-Tsuyon. "This, please."
He's such a polite child.
It makes it easier to ignore the more confusing parts of his presence in her parlor.
----
"Hi!"
Sokanth Skywalker is in her shop.
That's new.
"Hello," Na-Tsuyon says. "I didn't know you were thinking of getting ink."
"I'm not," she says, hopping up on a stool across the counter. She holds out a hand, and Na-Tsuyon clasps it with bemusement. "But you guys do piercings too, right?"
"We do," she confirms. "You're... ten?"
"Yep!" Sokanth chirps, kicking her legs back and forth. "Is that old enough to get these without permission, or should I ask my dad to come by?"
"At least twelve for piercings without in-person, signed approval from a parent or guardian," Na-Tsuyon says. "Though if you're anything like your brother, I don't imagine that'll be a problem for you."
Sokanth grins at her, bright and a little wild. "Nose, bottom lip, eyebrow. I don't know the actual terms, but I know what I want. Which do you suggest getting first?"
"I'd say nostril," Na-Tsuyon tells her. Most species even vaguely humanoid kick off with the ears, but that's not exactly an option for a togruta. "Let me get a chart and you can figure out what type of piercing you want, and what kind of hoop or stud. I don't actually do the piercings myself, though. Comm the General if you want this done today, though."
"Thank you~!"
----
Nostril, labret, and a horizontal brow, the piercer notes down at the end of the latest Skywalker visit. Na-Tsuyon wonders if the brow piercing will look strange with Soka's markings, and then doesn't think on it further.
----
Ylliben, almost nine, is silent as he gets the touch-up.
His father isn't here. Neither is Shmi. It's pre-approved, signed permission and all, but it's still odd that neither of Ben's adults is here.
Sokanth is, but she's almost as quiet as Ben is.
Na-Tsuyon has heard the rumors, but she's not going to say anything. She's not. It's not her business.
"Ben," Soka speaks up, towards the end of the appointment. "Ask her the thing."
Ben shakes his head. "No way."
"She knows more about tattoos and how important they are than anyone!" Soka urges. "Ask her!"
"Do you want to wait for your father?" Na-Tsuyon suggests.
"No!" both immediately yelp.
She pauses, glad the needle hadn't been to skin, and levels a look at Ben. He flushes and settles down, mumbling an apology for jerking as he had. She goes back to fixing the stretch of the binary suns tattoo.
Soka shifts in her seat, watching them intently.
"Shmi's upset with buir," Ben suddenly says. He doesn't meet Na-Tsuyon's eyes. "I'm... I don't know if you heard what's going on."
"I do my best to avoid rumors," she says, keeping her voice as neutral as she can. "I did hear that the Mand'alor is about to have a grandchild, and something about an upcoming wedding. That much has been announced officially."
"Dad freaked out," Soka says, legs kicking back and forth. "He's happy for her, and he's fine with Jango being the other parent, but it kicked off a... philosophical crisis? Ben, what do you think?"
"Metaphysical, maybe," Ben mumbles. "Definitely existential."
"And he told Shmi some stuff and now she's hurt that he didn't tell her before and it's all a mess," Soka finishes. "So, uh, we don't... want either of them involved. Until. Um. Until that's settled."
Na-Tsuyon bites back any deeper questions she might have. "Alright. I won't pry. What did you want to know from me?"
"I had a plan for what I was going to get next," Ben says, staring at the fold of fabric over his sister's knees in lieu of something more pertinent. "A peace lily, on the inside of my wrist, for..."
"You don't have to tell me," she reminds him.
Ben bites his lip, and closes his eyes, and breathes in deep. Neither of the girls comment.
"She was important," Ben finally says. "In the big memories. But she doesn't... she's not... she isn't here. And Jango is. And he's marrying Shmi, and they're having a baby, so I should put a mark down for him first, right?"
"He's gonna be Mand'alor, too," Soka adds.
"He is," Na-Tsuyon says, as neutral as she can.
"He's joining the family," Ben says, his gaze fixed on the floor in front of him. "And there's going to be a baby, and that's. That's important."
"There's no order that you have to get things in," Na-Tsuyon assures him, squeezing his shoulder in a light gesture of support. "You've prioritized family so far, so I think it would make sense to get a mark for the coming cousin, at least. Unless... is the lily for your birth mother?"
Ben's face twists, uncomfortable for some reason she can't begin to guess at.
"No," Ben says.
"Skyguy's Jedi Master did almost marry her when they were younger," Soka explains. She glances at Na-Tsuyon and then away and at the wall. "They had a whole dramatic 'forbidden romance' thing going on, 'cause Jedi aren't supposed to get married. She died before Ben came into the picture, though."
It's a neat enough explanation.
It feels fake, but much of what the Skywalkers say about their pasts does.
She's sure it's true in some way. In some perspective. From... from a certain point of view, maybe.
"Alright, then," Na-Tsuyon dismisses. "All things aside, I would suggest adjusting your order of tattoo acquisition, but there's no particular requirement by Mandalorian standards. Your choices are rarely anything that intersects with set traditions, nor do you have a historic clan or house that comes with mandates of the sort. It seems that you're leaning towards prioritizing something for the new additions to your family, though; you've made it clear that these things are important to you, and I think you should pursue it if you're comfortable with it."
Ben nods, eyes somewhere far off.
"It'll make him flustered," Soka pushes, kicking lightly at her brother's ankle. "Jan-Jan's still worried you don't like him anymore."
"He is not," Ben huffs. "He's just scared of buir."
"Nah, your opinion matters too," Soka argues. "And you've been avoiding everyone 'cuz Skyguy freaked out and Shmi's upset, so Jango's worried you're mad at him about the baby happening. If you get a tattoo about him, he might actually cry."
"Is that why you want me to take that route?"
"Not the only one," Soka says, utterly guileless. She blinks at him, bright and innocent. "But I definitely do want to see the future Mand'alor crying because you made it obvious he's family now. It'll be funny."
Ben sighs, very clearly being dramatic about it. "Soka, I'm not going to pick a tattoo based on what you think will be funny."
"Imagine his face, though."
Na-Tsuyon doesn't comment at the expressions Ben makes as he very clearly does exactly that.
"Well, kriff," Ben sighs, and Soka giggles at the swear. "I'll have to get a tattoo for Jango, then."
----
Ben is already nine by the time he comes in with his father to actually get the tattoo for Jango's addition to the family. The choice he makes isn't particularly imaginative, but it'll suit well enough. A mythosaur skull, the symbol of the Haat Mando'ade, in a grey the same shade as beskar.
There actually are traditions to this one, specific adjustments to the framing and stylization meant to indicate how one fits into the faction, but also how one is associated with the Mand'alor. Ben is family, and close family, but not related by blood, nor adopted directly by the Mand'alor, rather a relative through the riduur be alor.
Na-Tsuyon explains each element and adjustment in detail, lets them process and agree, until she's taking a needle to Ben's skin once more.
"Will you be getting one for the coming child as well?" Na-Tsuyon asks while shading in a curve of bone.
"Not yet," Ben tells her, quiet and oddly contemplating. "I need to meet them, first. Figure out who they are."
"Sensible," she agrees. There's the usual oddity in his phrasing, and she ignores it as ever. "Did you tell Fett that you were getting this?"
"No, it's intended as a surprise," Ben says, watching her work.
She can almost feel the coming question.
It does not come from the human she expects.
"Do you know any Mando tattoo artists in Little Keldabe?" the General asks, voice low.
She finishes the line she's on, lifts the needle away from skin, and turns to him. "You're leaving for Coruscant?"
"Not yet," Skywalker says. He meets her eyes evenly. "But... soon. The time's coming. A year, maybe two. The Force will let us know when the time is right."
"Uh-huh," Na-Tsuyon acknowledges this. She does not comment further. The Force is not her wheelhouse. If they think it wants them back on Coruscant, with the Temple, then that's what they believe.
"These are Mando work," Skywalker continues, almost painfully earnest, "and I'd like to ensure whoever maintains them until Ben stops growing knows the right way to handle Mando art."
It's really not that different from a standard tattoo artist, but she's a little charmed anyway. Enchanted, almost. The man really does care.
"I can get you some names and addresses next time you stop by," she promises him. "It's been a few years since I checked in on their work, and I'll need to look them over before I make any recommendations."
He smiles at her, relieved in a manner she finds appallingly open for a Jedi like himself.
Ben mimics his father.
----
She gets to attend the wedding, months later.
The food is very, very good.
(Ben waits until the reception to show off his new tattoo, and the future Mand'alor does, in fact, cry.)
(So does Shmi.)
(So does their eight-week-old daughter, but that's probably unrelated to the tattoo.)
----
"Do you think getting a belly button ring would be good?"
Na-Tsuyon doesn't lift her head from her paperwork when Sokanth poses the question to the piercer. She's in for the horizontal brow bar, this time, and the labret is going to be somewhere a few months down the line.
"That's really up to you," the piercer says. His name is Hujnak, and he's a Devaronian that's been working here since Na-Tsuyon opened up the place. She loves him dearly, but he stole the last piece of cake and for that he will have no help with difficult customers for the next fortnight.
Or until she gets bored.
"I'm leaning towards 'no,' but I'm not sure," Soka muses. "I like the idea of it, but I feel like it might get snagged on things more easily. Plus, it's going to be a point of higher damage and pressure if I get a gut punch. It's one of the parts of my body I'm never really going to armor up, you know?"
They do know. There have been screaming matches about all the Jedi's refusal to wear enough armor on many occasions. The Jedi prioritize their agility to such a degree that armorweave is more reasonable than actual armor, in their opinion. This is an opinion that Fett and Mereel both take issue with.
At great volume.
(Shmi has vambraces, a gorget, and greaves, Na-Tsuyon knows. Some of it was exchanged at the wedding. Shmi doesn't wear much armor, certainly less than even the children. Shmi, crucially, isn't a warrior or otherwise planning to see battle.)
"Then I would say it may be best to hold off."
"Phooey," Soka says, though she doesn't seem particularly upset. "Ben's gonna be cooler than me forever, then."
"You think tattoos are cooler than piercings?" Hujnak challenges. "I'm offended."
"He can just get more," Soka protests. "Without it looking weird or getting dangerous, I mean."
Hujnak hums, noncommittal. "And you're worried about being cooler than the younger brother you have told me is, and I quote, the biggest nerd ever?"
"Well, yeah," Sokanth scoffs. "He's gonna start acting older than me as soon as he thinks he can get away with it. I gotta have something to hold over his head, you know?"
"Seeing as you are the older sibling..."
"Ehhhh..."
Nope.
Not paying attention.
----
"These are House Kryze colors."
Ylliben's breath hitches.
He is ten. He doesn't seem ready to provide answers. She turns to the father instead.
"Will that be a problem?" the general asks, calm and even.
"Yes," she says, and Ben slumps. She continues, because this is her job, and for a reason. "Unless you have a ready justification for when House Kryze asks, yes, it will be a problem. If it were a landscape or an animal, it wouldn't matter, but the pairing of the colors and the peace lily is an explicit statement of loyalty to Adonai and his heir, Satine. Unless you've suddenly decided to adjust your political stance to total pacifism instead of your Jedi approach, or have another reason to take on House Kryze colors, I'd warn against it at all, and would refuse to perform the work myself."
Ylliben's eyes are fixed somewhere behind her, and shining wetly.
"Okay," the general says. "Ben, do you have any other pallettes in mind?
"These were her colors," Ben whispers, and then he swallows thickly. "I just..."
"Simplify," Skywalker suggests. He fiddles with a necklace half-hidden in his Jedi layers; the japor one is visible, but a dull gold glint is all Na-Tsuyon can see of the other before it's tucked away again. "She'd understand, yeah? There's political ramifications. Dangerous ones, especially to you."
Interesting thing to say about a woman who, by Soka's earlier statements, died well before Ben was born.
They could at least try to stop dropping hints about their oddities. She doesn't want to know more.
"Lilac," Ben finally decides. "And... pale silver. With a filigree pattern in the shading?"
"I can do that," Na-Tsuyon promises.
She does not ask further.
----
"We're moving to Coruscant in a month."
Na-Tsuyon's head snaps up, head tails jolting almost painfully with the movement.
Sokanth is getting her labret, finally. She's gossiping as Hujnak prepares the tools, as usual, and Na-Tsuyon tries to ignore it when they Skywalkers do that, she does, but...
"You're leaving," she repeats, feeling oddly blank.
"Um... yeah?" Soka answers. She scratches at one stubby montral. "We've talked about it before. I thought you knew."
"I didn't realize it was so soon," Na-Tsuyon defends. She's more upset than she should be. "I thought you'd be waiting until the little princess was older."
Sokanth blinks at her, slow and... not judging, no. Evaluating, maybe.
"I'm almost thirteen," she says, slow and deliberate and heavy. "And Ben's eleven. There's no hard age limit for becoming a padawan, but I'm getting into the peak years for getting chosen, and I've been living here instead of in the Temple. I haven't had years to impress a potential Master like the others. That might not matter; sometimes a Master sees their future student and just knows, but... I need to have other Jedi to spar with, not just Skyguy and Ben. And Ben's visions are getting stronger, and Dad was never that good with his own in the first place, so he's worried about being able to help at all. We could stay longer, but..."
She trails off, and shrugs, and the weighted air disappears. "It's not the same thing as a verd'goten, at all, but it's about the same age, you know? I should be in the Temple for it."
"What would a verd'goten equivalent be?" Hujnak prompts, when Na-Tsuyon fails to find her words. "Being an adult and equal member and all such things?"
"Knighthood," Soka answers immediately. "Dad got knighted when he was twenty, but that's really young, usually. His master was knighted at twenty-five, which was a bit late, but apparently there was a whole dramatic thing going on there that Dad never got all the details about."
"Becoming a Padawan is a sign that your teachers see you as someone that is ready to take on the responsibilities of a Jedi, yes?" Hujnak asks. "That you may not be ready to go out on your own, but that you're old enough to understand your oaths and choose how to follow them, and to protect others?"
Sokanth considers this, and then nods. "Yeah, I guess it's similar to using the verd'goten to gauge if someone's ready to swear the Resol'nare, that way. Still not moving out, and just about entering an apprenticeship, but enough of an adult to make the choice of how to change the world."
"I think most cultures have something like that around the same age," Hujnak comments. "Some do it a bit later in the teens, but it's usually around your age that most... well, most cultures who age at the 'human standard' rate--"
Na-Tsuyon can't help the reflexive snort of derision. Neither can Soka. Hujnak, the closest to human in the room and yet still very much not, smiles like this is exactly what he intended.
"--most who age at that rate do have it somewhere in that eleven-to-seventeen range, I'd think."
Soka shrugs. "Yeah, well. Still gotta go to the Temple for it, you know?"
"Are you going to take the verd'goten at all?" Na-Tsuyon asks, suddenly a little desperate to keep the Skywalkers here, with Mandalore and all its people, just a fraction of a moment longer.
"I don't think so," Soka muses. "I've been thinking about it, but I should probably talk about it with Jango, yeah?"
"Yeah," Na-Tsuyon says, and feels like she's swallowing down around rocks.
----
As it turns out, the timing is very deliberate. Three weeks later, Jaster transfers the title of Mand'alor to his son.
(Though Na-Tsuyon does not know this, twenty-six is older than Jango was when he lost the title, once upon another life.)
There is a week of festivity. There is food, and drink, and dancing. Some people get married. Some people make announcements of impending births. Some people reveal songs they composed in preparation for this very day.
For a week, Mandalore celebrates a new king.
Then, the Jedi and his children leave.
(Ben gives Na-Tsuyon a hug before he goes.)
(She tries to understand why she feels like she's losing something when he does.)

Send me a character: unpopular opinion about Hiroshi Ochanomisu
Hiroshi Ochanomizu, since no specific iteration was chosen, I will do the character as a whole (edit for anon, this isnt a pick and choose ask meme so ur getting the whole thing babeeeey)
First Impression
"hm hes cute i guess"
Impression now
I would literally die for him. in universe, many would see him as a pushover given his soft appearance and kind demeanor, when hes anything BUT a pushover. this man will literally jump through the fire and flames for his kids (he did)
Favorite moment
oh my, I will give my favorite moment for ATB Hiroshi, 2003 Hiroshi, and Pluto Hiroshi
ATB HIROSHI- i could easily list his death experience as a fav moment and how it completely reworked his entire direction for Bewusstein, but I think one of my favorite moments is in vol 11, when Hiroshi wants to confront Moriya. He's so angry and you can tell he's trying not to snap, especially when Umataro's own anger towards the situation is factored in.
Tumblr media
I also think its a good moment to show hiroshi is indeed just as stubborn if not more so, than tenma. Vol 11 in general has a lot of good Hiroshi moments. I could honestly talk forever about my favorite hiroshi moments, its hard to figure out which is the best.
2003 Hiroshi- now this is a good ochan. many amazing moments, but I think my favs are when he's very fatherly. top tier ochan moment is in the lost memories episode, wheres hes looking for atom, not because he's the minister of science and needs to find this priceless robot, but because he's that robot's father. Another good moment is when he takes legal guardianship over reno when shit goes down, he rolls up like dont touch that boy im his legal guardian as of right now i love ochan. oh and of course you fucking know him running into a burning building on the verge of exploding, to save his son. like...cmon...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pluto Ochan- My favorite moment from this Ochan is when he gives it his all to save a little robot dog. I dont need to say anything else.
Tumblr media
honorable mention- OG manga ochan beating the absolute shit out of Count Burg
Tumblr media
idea for a story
an idea for a story is ochan wanting to create an education branch of the ministry of science that can be for any kid, no matter wealth, grades or skill, and him having to fight the board on this, because they see no use in it unless they can be very selective about the students. i can imagine him wanting a place where kids can foster a love for science and robots, even if they never become roboticists/choose a different path in life, he wants to give kids that chance.
unpopular opinion
I ALWAYS get hung up on this one because I do not know what my unpopular opinions are. do i even have any??? lololololol
favorite relationship
Do I Even Need To Say It also im not allowed to post any more images on this >:(
favorite headcanon
bro idk ochan has been in my head for so long who fckin knows what i think of him how about that i think he can play the cello (or that hes in love with tenma. which i had to remember. thats still only a headcanon, cuz in my head. Its Real. Its So Real.)

Interlude - Rewrite POYW - Harry Hook x reader - part 2 - preparations
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*i realized today was Saturday and was like “oh holy shit time to post part 2!! so enjoy!*
=
*felt like doing another episode entrance to this so deal with it*
-a camera pans from Auradon to the isle of the lost, zooming in on a large ship that held the symbol of Harriet Hook, the camera zoom fades into Harriet watching her crew move around the deck, a small stack of papers in her hand-
Harriet glanced up suddenly as Xiaohui slid down from rope as she switched out with another member of the crew for lookout in the crow's nest “what ‘cha got there captain?” she hummed, stepping next to Harriet and leaning over to look at the papers.
“just stuff that king beasty sent me, something about guardians for the twins, Sammy, and CJ” Harriet muttered, folding the papers and shoving them into her inner jacket pocket. “apparently because im a legal adult” Xiaohui rose her brow in confusion and Harriet waved it off “Auradon thing I don’t know, but since I’m an adult, they think that I can be the twin's guardian and they are trying to see if I can be CJ’s at the same time since im her sister n stuff” Xiaohui nodded a bit and looked back at the crew, most of which was getting the new supplies of food and water into the lower decks for safekeeping.
“I’m slightly impressed that (y/n) girl actually kept her word” Xiaohui hummed, crossing her arms and leaning on Harriet a bit, who pushed her back with her shoulder “like only a week ago the king announced the new program for us getting better shit and its already in full effect.”
“I think (y/n) scares whoever's in charge of that stuff and made ‘em work faster” Harriet snorted, remembering when she had passed by the main market almost everyone was whispering about the Auradon girl that had kicked her father's ass and left him as an amputee.
“well, she sure scared the fuck out me when she went apeshit on your dad” Xiaohui chuckled, pushing off the rails of the ship and about to walk towards the crew as they began to head out for another shipment “so how long do you think it gonna be before they get the next group of kids off” Harriet looked off for a moment.
“well with the letter Harry sent me, they are aiming for at least within the month, and at most within the next two, but first they got to get the guardian shit out of the way first” Xiaohui nodded, glanced back at the crew then back at Harriet, “I think once we get over there, I’ll be able to help out with choosing more kids to come over to Auradon, Evie might have her heart in the right place but she hardly even knows any kids, I have a lot more tabs on everyone on here and will be able to help get those who need it more off first.”
Xiaohui nodded again, understanding that the crew would probably be left on the isle for a bit longer just to make sure everything was running smoothly on their side, to make sure no one ruined a single kids chances at getting a better life. “now go on, Im pretty sure Sammy’s about to trip over nothing there”
Xiaohui turned and sighed, running over to Sammy and catching his arm just as he stumbled forward, she chided him as they walked off the ship and towards the barges again to collect the last of their shipments.
Harriet let out a small sigh and took out the papers again, tapping her foot anxiously as she flipped through the “guardian” application copies that Ben had sent her just in case she wasn’t able to be the twins and CJ’s guardian, and they needed someone from Auradon to be their guardian.
'Application of guardianship
Child; Skipper Smee  - parent; Sam Smee
Guardian applicant(s) - Wendy Darling, Rapunzel Fitzherbert, Eric & Ariel Barnes’
'Application of guardianship
Child; Sterling Smee  - parent; Sam Smee
Guardian applicant(s) - Wendy Darling, Eugene Fitzherbert, Eric & Ariel Barnes’
'Application of guardianship
Child; Sammy Smee  - parent; Sam Smee
Guardian applicant(s) - Wendy Darling, Rapunzel Fitzherbert, Eric & Ariel Barnes’
Harriet raised her brow at the repeat of applicants, especially the Wendy Darling one, considering she dealt with her father and uncle Smee first hand. Though (y/n) had written on the blank side of the applications that Wendy had applied for that exact reason.
She folded away the Smee papers and looked at her little sister's Guardian application.
'Application of guardianship
Child; Calista Jane Hook - parent; James Hook
Guardian applicant(s) - Wendy Darling, Eric & Ariel Barnes, Tiana Maldon’
Once again Wendy Darling and freaking King Eric and Queen Ariel had applied to be a guardian of her “family” Harriet sighed again and let her hands drop to her thighs, staring off at nothing as she thought about the upcoming future.
She broke out of her trance as a sheepish Dizzy stepped onto the deck, hands clenching tightly to her denim jacket “um…Harriet?” she squeaked, stepping forward a bit as Celia, Dr.Facilier daughter, pushed her towards Harriet “I-I was wondering if there was anything about…me in those papers King Ben sent you?”
Harriet brought up the papers again and flipped through them, nodding as she spotted Dizzy’s name on a guardian application and a blue envelope “yeah” Harriet muttered, handing the envelope to Dizzy and glancing back down at the application.
'Application of guardianship
Child; Dizzy Tremaine - parent; Drizella Tremaine
Guardian applicant(s) - Ella Charming, Fairy Godmother, Anita Radcliffe’
She handed the younger VK the application a moment later and the girl gasped as she read the names of the people who signed up to be her guardian “Cinderella? Fairy Godmother??” she squeaked, crunching the papers in her hand as Celia walked up behind her and looked over her shoulder “why would they-holy moly!!!”
“please just say fuck” Celia laughed, snatching the application from Dizzy and looking it over, curling her lip at all the other information details under the main application script. “wow that’s a lot of shit do to”
The guardian applicants had to fill out most of their information, sign waivers, and multiple other things just to be the guardian of a singular kid.
“oh, Harriet?” Harriet looked up at the call of her name and raised her brow as Dizzy held out the letter she had gotten from Evie, pointing at the back of it “there's some stuff for you on the back of the letter”
She grabbed it from Dizzy and started to read, not recognizing the handwriting but it had been signed by (y/n).
-Hey Harriet, so real quick all I need you to do is pick out who YOU would want to be your fams guardians (aka CJ, the twins, and Sammy) and we’ll pick out who we think is best with your opinion in mind. the kids are never obligated to interact with their guardians but I thought you would be more comfortable knowing exactly who the guardians were.
There are two pieces of blank paper in the envelope with Dizzy’s name on it, one for Dizzy to write back to Evie and one for you to write to me.
-see you soon, (y/n) (l/n)
Ps. Gil and Harry scream-said “hi”-
Harriet snorted at the last bit and folded the letter back up and gave it back to Dizzy “ey Dizzy” the younger vk looked up at her with wide eyes, Celia peeking over her shoulder “who would you rather be your guardian, Cinderella, FG, or that Anita chick?” Dizzy looked off for a moment then shrugged.
“um, I don’t know?...I guess which everyone Evie picks out is okay?” Dizzy gave a slightly uncomfortable grin before jumping as Harriet's crew started to return and lug the last of the new supplies abord. “oh, um, I have to go, bye!” Before she could leave, Harriet grabbed Dizzy’s shoulder and grabbed the envelope from her, taking out one of the blank papers then letting the vk go on her way. Dizzy and Celia turned on their heels and raced off the ship, Dizzy’s letter from Evie clenched tightly in her hand.
Harriet hummed to herself and lifted the papers again, looking at the notes next to the guardian applicants that (y/n) had put.
She made eye contact with Xiaohui and nodded at her, the girl nodding back and taking command of the ship as Harriet moved to go into the captain's quarters. Sammy breathed a sigh of relief as Xiaohui took command, he might have been the first mate but he was horrible at being in control of things.
Harriet sat down at her creaky old cherrywood desk, grabbed a pen, and started to write.
-
“im still surprised that we actually got more people signing up to be guardians for the vks” you chuckled setting down the copy of Dizzy’s file and leaning back on Bens desk “I mean, almost all of them are repeats for the first round but my point still stands” Ben smiled and nodded.
“yeah, something about since the first round went well enough that people are not as averse to being guardians for the vks” Ben signed off a paper with a flourish of his wrist and set it aside. “though we might have to figure out something else as we go along, I don’t think there are enough adults in Auradon to claim every single kid on the isle, even if one person can claim two kids”
You sighed and nodded, rubbing the side of your head slightly “yeah, and at some point, we need to figure out another way to transfer kids off safely without having to go through the whole ‘guardian’ thing, because eventually, we will run out of guardians”
Gil, who had joined you and Ben for today's ‘vk shit’ meeting, looked up from his bowl of grapes “oh this reminds me of when Harry and I went to the animal shelter with Carlos, and-and um, there was a bunch of rooms for the cats n dogs n stuff and Carlos asked something about chips and the lady said that as long as the worker was licensed, they could claim the animal” he looked back down at his snack as you and Ben looked at him with wide eyes “what?”
“that-that was the weirdest thing you have ever said” you laughed, shaking your head a bit and crossing your legs at the ankles. Ben smiled at the blonde-haired vk and turned back to his papers, then popped his head back up with sparkling eyes and a wide grin.
“THAT’S IT!” you and Gil jumped slightly at his suddenly loud voice. Ben stood and pointed at Gil “Gil that is brilliant!”
You and Gil looked to each other then back at Ben “Ben please tell me you didn’t get an idea from Gil's weird rambling?” you laughed, leaning back a bit as Ben's grinning face turned to you. “you did….what is it then?”
“A shelter for vks!!!” Ben exclaimed, bouncing on his heels as he moved away from his desk and towards a large blue painted filing cabinet to the left of his desk. “here in Auradon! And I have just the place for it!!! And-and we can start an organization just for people to be guardians for vks! And we can figure out a system to have one person be responsible for multiple kids so we’ll never run out of them!” he rushed back to his desk and threw a set of building blueprints along with the deeds to the building.
You looked over the papers, raising your brows as you realized you were looking at a large castle that was written in Bens name “that…doesn’t sound like a bad idea?” you laughed, picking up the blueprints as Gil pawed at the deed. “in my world there's a thing called orphanages or foster systems, they kinda suck but usually there is one or two people in charge or responsible for sometimes over twenty kids, so this could work for our vks if we do it correctly and get good people” Ben grinned and nodded, grabbing the paper from you and shaking it in his hands.
“and-and! This castle, which was my parents, is in my name! I can do whatever I want with it! Let's turn it into the shelter! It's near the ocean too so these kids can see the real ocean every day and go swimming or build sandcastles whenever they want!!! And-and during the summer! Or warm days! I can hire people to take the kids on boat rids or-or!” you laughed and set your hands on Ben’s shoulders, calming him down a bit.
“Ben! Amazing ideas, love them, let's take it one step at a time, first we get Harriet and the others off” you gestured to the stack of papers for the six vks that held their information “then we start working on the shelter and the guardian organization, not baby steps, just one step at a time” Ben took a deep breath and nodded, the grin still wide on his face
“then let's finish up! All that’s left is choosing their guardians! Then we can send the limo next week!!!” he set down the castle blueprints and picked up two of the vk folders, handing you and Gil the last three “we got no time to lose!”
-
Celia slyly glanced up from her cards as Dizzy danced around her grandmother's hair salon, her aunt and mother busy working on some client's hair as Dizzy swept up the fallen locks. “now Diz” Anastasia, Dizzy’s aunt started to speak, the young vk immediately stopping in her little chore and looking to her “remember, while there will be people there that will accept you with open arms there will inevitably be people that will be out to hurt you” Dizzy’s shoulders dropped at the reminder and slowly nodded “that doesn’t mean we don’t want you going, it just means that even in Auradon it's not a fully safe space, there will always be assholes in every place” the clients ignored the surprisingly supportive talk from Anastasia and looked down at their torn magazines.
Dizzy sighed and nodded again “I understand” Dizzy smiled, starting on her chores again, though with less energy than she had a moment before. Celia looked away from Dizzy and shuffled her cards, laying them out on the table in front of her and closing her eyes, focusing her energy on Dizzy and hovering her hand over the cards.
In her mind's eye, three cards seemed to glow. She quickly picked them out and flipped them over to show their art. Celia opened her eyes, and looked at the first card, which symbolized Dizzy’s past.
The reversed fool. Celia furrowed her brows; Dizzy had been taken advantage of? When? Then again, Celia hummed looking to the next card, this was the isle, being taken advantage of was a daily thing, especially for someone like Dizzy who sometimes could be a bit airheaded.
The next card, which symbolized Dizzy’s present, was the upright chariot. Dizzy was heading in the right direction then huh? She was going to Auradon soon after all. Celia looked to the last card, which symbolized Dizzy’s future.
The upright sun. Celia nodded again, Dizzy’s adventures in Auradon would be successful then, all the more reason to see if she could stay on Dizzy’s good side even after she left for Auradon so that maybe one day Celia could have that success as well.
“watcha doin?” Dizzy asked suddenly, peeking over Celia’s shoulder as the younger VK jumped and threw herself over her cards. Celia looked back at Dizzy with a pout.
“if you have to know” Celia sighed, pushing off the table and gesturing to the now strewn about cards. “I was reading your fortune, I got curious” Dizzy hummed at that and kneeled next to Celia slightly, looking at the cards that were still facing up.
“what do they mean?” Dizzy asked, picking up the upright chariot and tilting it in her hands.
“just stuff from your past, present, and future. Your past is not the best, your present is going in the right direction, and your future is bright, that’s basically what those say” Celia held out her hand, Dizzy setting the card and a few coins in her hand “uh-“ Dizzy grinned.
“well you did read my fortune, and I remember you said you never read without a payment!” Celia stared at Dizzy as the girl skipped over to her chalkboard with all her chores on it and checked off the sweeping chore. Then she started cleaning the windows, picking up a rag and a spray bottle with a blue liquid chemical in it.
Celia watched for a moment before looking at Dizzy’s aunt and mother, who finished up with their last clients and sent them along, getting their payment and reminding Dizzy to close up properly as they went upstairs to the family's apartment.
“Hey, Diz” Celia started, fixing up her cards and putting them into her hip cardholder. The older vk hummed and turned to look at Celia “you…you aren’t gonna forget me once you get to Auradon…will you?” Celia, while her original intentions with Dizzy were ill-intentioned and she just wanted to get a leg up on a future in Auradon by being friends with the vk that had connections already, but Dizzy was just that kinda person you couldn’t be fake around, and Celia had come to genuinely care for her.
Dizzy’s face bloomed into a bright smile that could blind the sun and she set down her rag and bottle, skipping over to Celia and hugging her tightly. Celia froze at the sign of affection and moved to push Dizzy off but stopped herself as Dizzy pulled back and shook her head “of course not! Once I get to Auradon I’ll make sure you’ll be the next one off, just after me! I would never leave you here willingly.” Celia felt her nose and eyes burn and she quickly twisted around, wiping her face as Dizzy giggled.
“sap” Celia chuckled, letting out a small breath as Dizzy slammed into her and wrapped her arms around Celia, shaking them around a bit “hey hey come on” Dizzy giggled again and released the young shadow witch, skipping back over to the rag and bottle and resuming her chores.
Celia let a smile grow on her face as she bopped her head to the song Dizzy started to hum as she took out her pocket watch and checked the time. “oh shit it's late, I got errands to do, bye dizzy!” Celia grabbed her bag and bolted out the salon door, rushing towards the market to grab a couple of things for her “boss”
Well, less boss and more someone who just hired her to grab stuff for him because he was a hermit and didn’t like going outside his little underground hidey-hole.
Celia skidded to a stop as she spotted the short ombre blue hair of Hadie, the son of Hades. Aka the son of her “boss”. Hadie was a tall, oddly buff, blue ombre haired, punk-styled villain kid, the oldest on the isle at that at, being born before Hades had been shipped off to the isle.
“hey,” she muttered, reaching around him and grabbing a couple of peaches, that were not bruised thanks to the fresh shipments that were coming as of late, from in front of the much larger vk. Hadie glanced down at her and opened his messenger bag, allowing Celia to dump the fruit into it. “what’ca here for?”
“stuff” Hadie simply replied in his usual dry tone, following Celia as she started to travel the merchant stands, grabbing what Hades had requested from her and letting her dumb the items into his messenger bag.
One of the merchants, which Celia had stolen from before on her own time, sneered at her, flinching back as the spotted Hadie just behind her just staring at him. The merchant looked away as Celia took two cans of corn and dumped them into Hadie’s bag, skipping away with the older vk following her.
“why does he let her do that?” one of the market keeps whispered to their friend, who shrugged and looked back down at her stock of oranges.
“dunno, but it keeps the creeps off of her and keeps a fight from breaking out so who am I to care?” Hadie glanced at them but kept pace behind Celia, scrunching his nose slightly as one of the merchants leered towards Celia, the merchant reeling back as Hadie flashed his pocket knife.
Celia smirked to herself knowing that Hadie was subtly protecting her as she picked up things for his dad, and with a snatch of some packs of water, she was done for the day. “come on!” she yelled back towards Hadie, who grabbed a small pack of blueberries and followed after her, digging his key to the opening of the mineshafts that lead to his dad's lair out of his pocket. Celia bounced on her heels as Hadie opened the gate and followed him inside.
The two foregoed the bicycle contraption and just walked down the length of the tunnel that lead to the main area, Hadie taking one of the water packs from Celia and hoisting it onto his shoulder.
He ignored the echoing bark that blasted in his ear as he passed by a speaker that his dad made him set up a couple of years ago to keep trespassers out. He and Celia finally made it to the main living area and Celia skipped down the wooden steps, setting one of the water packs on the large metal table in the next room.
Hades looked away from the fading tv and raised his brow as Hadie let Celia snatch the bag from around his neck and take out the items she had taken from the market. “you get everything kids?” Hades teased, standing and walking over to the vks, ruffling his son's hair and laughing a bit as the just shorter Hadie smacked his hand away. “yep” Celia nodded, turning and holding out her hand to Hades, who dug into his jacket, pulled out a small red velvet pouch, and dropped it into her hand, Celia tugged it open as Hadie reached around her to grab a small peach and moved to plop into his dad's makeshift minecart seat. Celia nodded five rubies and several silver coins. “pleasure making business with cha’” Celia held out her hand, grinning as Hades gave it an exaggerated shake and skipped out of the lair, leaving the two gods behind.
She skipped all the way back to the hair salon and moved into the alleyway just next to Hades restaurant. Celia knocked a specific rhythm on the spray-painted door with the words ‘Pa Deranje’ on them. As it slid open Celia slipped through and ran into the quiet arcade her dad manned when school was out for the summer.
“Daddy~!” Celia cheered, running towards her father as he spotted her and held out his hands to lift her up and around.
“Cher~!” he called back, setting her back on her feet and wrapping his arms around her shoulder “so how was the hussle tonight?”
Celia grinned and held up the red velvet bag, her father grinning and holding out his hand. Celia dropped it into his palm and sat down at his fortune reading table, gasping happily at the steaming bowl of food that was resting in front of her.
Her father gestured for her to eat as he dug into the bag, nodding to himself as he saw the inside. He took out the silver coins and set them in front of Celia, stashing the rubies away for safekeeping as they were a higher currency on the isle.
“mmmhmm!” Celia hummed happily around her food, kicking her legs as she took another full bite of the soup-like meal. “what is this?!”
“good ol’ Gumbo my dear” Facilier took a seat in front of her and dug into his own bowl of Gumbo. “found all I needed to make it with at the market, thanks to those shipments” Facilier laughed at his daughter as she eagerly downed the gumbo, reaching out slightly to slow her “now slow down there cher, it’s a bit strong” Celia glanced at him and obeyed, setting the bowl back down and swallowing her current mouthful of food. “now after this you head straight to bed, it’s almost nine am and you’ve been up since eight yesterday” Celia went to object but stopped as her father gave her a look.
“fine” she pouted, smiling behind her bowl as he nodded and reached out to tweak her ear.
The two finished their “dinner” in comfortable silence, Celia finished first and stood from the table, giving her dad a quick kiss and hug before running up to the apartment where she and her dad stayed.
Facilier sighed and took the two empty bowls and followed Celia up the apartment, counting down from 5 and nodding as the telltale sign of Celia’s room door closing sounded just as he reached 0.
While the isle was just a bit better nowadays, thanks to the program that Hooks sons girl had started, he still hoped one day his little girl would be in Auradon one day and never have to worry about where her next meal would come from.
“one day cher” Facilier whispered to himself, setting his top hat on the hat rack and moving to his room “one day you’ll get your cut.”

So, the good news: Ghetsis was not redeemed, he isn’t going to have a relationship with N moving forward, and although N was shown to wish things could be different between them, ultimately the whole situation was treated with the seriousness and gravitas that it deserved and N never once forgot the abuse that Ghetsis put him through, nor was he at any point willing to just brush it aside. In that regard, I’m very glad for how Masters handled the situation.
With that said, though, the writing in Masters made me realize something else about how child abuse stories are handled in Pokémon, and that something else is . . . not good. Namely, I’ve realized there is a significant difference between how child abuse stories in Pokémon are handled depending on whether the abusive parent is blood related to the child or not.
First and foremost, let’s get this out of the way: There is a social stigma in Japan against adoption. This isn’t to say that children never get adopted, but that culturally adoption is looked down upon in comparison to having biological children, and as a result there are only a few hundred adoptions each year in comparison to the thousands of kids living in orphanages. (Although this isn’t purely stigma, since in Japan the biological parents can still retain legal guardianship over their children in the orphanages and can therefore prevent them from being adopted by families as well. They don’t do this maliciously, but instead might think, “I will be able to care for my child later” even if that never comes to pass.) Additionally, I’ve read before that the stigma is why adopted children often don’t refer to their adopted parents as “mother” or “father” but I can’t find that source now, so take that with a grain of salt.
Anyway, the point of me saying all of that is: Japan has a stigma against adoption and Pokémon is a video game series created by Japanese people. Therefore, it stands to reason that Japanese cultural beliefs (such as the importance of blood family over adopted family) can make its way into the series, even if the series itself is a worldwide phenomenon that they know will absolutely stretch beyond Japan’s borders . . . and I think that’s what has happened here, intentionally or otherwise. Basically, whether an abusive parent in Pokémon is redeemed or not seems to have very little to do with the severity of the abuse (including that which is shown to the audience), but instead everything to do with whether their children are biologically related to them or not.
First, let’s take a look at the abusive parent that was redeemed, Lusamine. In Sun & Moon specifically Lusamine is not once shown being anything but abusive to her children. Lillie tells a story of how Lusamine was kind to her a couple times in the past (dancing in the rain, co-sleeping when Lillie was sick), but that falls in line for abusive parents. Abusive parents generally aren’t abusive 24/7; there’s a well-known cycle of abuse which contains a “honeymoon period” stage in which, typically after an apology and a promise to do better, the abuser treats the victim kindly, which usually results in the victim believing that the abuser really does love them and that whatever abuse comes later (and it always does come later) is in fact the victim’s fault on some level, for failing to keep things stable. Regardless, we know that not only did Lusamine abuse both Gladion and Lillie terribly in the past (to the point where Lillie has trauma surrounding even the clothes she wears and has trouble getting new ones), but we also see her verbally and emotionally abuse them on-screen, and then we see her attempt to murder Lillie during the climax. While Lusamine was retooled into being a well-intentioned extremist in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, we again see her verbally abuse her children on-screen, to the point where when Hau says that Lusamine really isn’t a bad person after all, we see Gladion grimacing in the background. All told, we see Lusamine emotionally, verbally, and (with her attempted murder in SM) physically abuse her children on-screen, and yet she is still forgiven by them pretty much immediately, redeemed, and treated as if they’re a happy family with just a few unfortunate bumps in their history. I’ll note here, for anyone who isn’t already aware, that Lusamine is Gladion and Lillie’s biological mother, and this is obvious by how similar they all look even if you weren’t told repeatedly.
Now let’s look at the abusive parent that is not redeemed, Ghetsis. In the first set of Unova games, Black & White, most of Ghetsis’ abuse of N happens off-screen and isn’t revealed until the climax. Ghetsis had N raised in a castle underground where he was cut off from society. He was brought pokémon that had been abused so that he could be manipulated into thinking that all humans abused pokémon and that pokémon needed to be liberated therefore. Because Ghetsis needed N to act as King of Team Plasma and control the legendary dragon, Ghetsis didn’t directly abuse N during this time. Instead, he neglected him (N was primarily raised by his sisters, Concordia and Anthea), and psychologically abused him via manipulative lies about what the rest of the world was like. It isn’t until the climax when N has decided to disband Team Plasma and listen to what the player has to say that Ghetsis brings out the verbal abuse, calling N “a freak without a human heart” and revealing that he was only ever using N all along. In the sequel games, Ghetsis is similarly openly hostile to N again, showing that he has no intentions whatsoever of being a good father to him. He’s pretty terrible to him, even if we didn’t see very much of it (particularly in comparison to what we saw with the Aether family, whose abuse was also much more realistic than N’s situation), and pretty much no one would want him to be redeemed. But also it’s important to note that N and Ghetsis, despite having the same hair color, are for whatever reason NOT biologically related.
And this is hammered home time . . . and time . . . and time again, particularly in this Masters event.
Now, I think most of us would agree that it would be hard to find a woman who would want to procreate with Ghetsis. Granted, Ghetsis isn’t the type of person who would care about consent, but I do think it’s reasonable to assume that Game Freak probably wanted to avoid those thoughts, even though it could have been very easily solved by having a female Sage who was also Ghetsis’ baby mama / wife (similar to how Ariana, one of Giovanni’s executives, is very obviously Silver’s mother). So I mean, from a taste standpoint, I can see why they wanted to go the adoption route with Ghetsis, even though they still made him and N have green hair despite not being biologically related for some reason.
But.
I still think it’s noticeable that they have the irredeemable abusive parent be the one who both had the least amount of on-screen abuse (and also the least realistic abuse) and also be the adopted parent, versus the one they bent themselves into pretzel shapes to redeem be the one with the most on-screen abuse (and most realistic abuse) who also happened to be the biological parent. The message that sends, to me, is that it doesn’t matter how badly you abuse your children in this world so long as you are their biological parent. In the end, you will be forgiven and they are beholden to you as family. Versus if you’re an adoptive parent . . . well, you were never as important anyway, so. I mean, why else would Lillie leave her loving adoptive parents of Kukui and Burnet to go back to her abusive mother in Sun & Moon? Clearly the blood ties were just that much more important. (Granted, Kukui and Burnet hadn’t officially adopted her, but they as good as. I’ll never stop being infuriated by that ending.)
This is, to a lesser extent, even shown with Giovanni and Silver’s situation. Giovanni was, to our knowledge, never actually abusive toward Silver; in the one conversation we see them have in HeartGold & SoulSilver, Silver’s main issue is that he doesn’t understand why Giovanni is disbanding Team Rocket after losing to Red, and also he doesn’t get why Giovanni needs so many underlings to begin with. He thinks Giovanni is weak, and Giovanni just tells him that he’s wrong without really bothering to explain things. At most, Giovanni is aloof and distant with Silver, which makes Silver angry, but Silver’s bigger issue is with Team Rocket as a whole. Giovanni’s definitely not a good father, but he’s not an abusive parent on par with Lusamine or Ghetsis from what we’ve been shown, and the implication is there that they could potentially repair their relationship in the future. Even in this event, the tension between them wasn’t bad, just complicated.
But . . . they’re also biologically related. Silver is Giovanni’s son, we’ve been told this a million times, and it’s very obvious that Ariana is his mother. They’re biologically related. And so, even though Giovanni is routinely touted as one of Pokémon’s most fearsome villains, Silver will never actually cut him off completely / be able to do that because Giovanni is his biological father. The fact that Team Rocket is based on yakuza probably complicates things even further there, but all the same. If Silver had been adopted by Giovanni, I’m pretty positive that Giovanni wouldn’t care / Silver would cut him off entirely. It wouldn’t be seen as a “real” family.
And this all bothers me, because not only was my biological mother abusive, but my stepmother was the only one who treated me as a mother should treat her child. Similarly, my biological sister was complicit and even participated in the abuse I suffered as a child, but my stepbrother whom I’ve known practically my whole life is the sibling I’d ride or die with. To me, biological ties mean jack shit. Family doesn’t begin or end with blood; to treat non-blood relations as lesser is something that will never fail to raise my hackles. So to see it handled this way in one of my favorite franchises of all time . . . yeah, it’s more than a little upsetting. I understand why it’s happening, I’m fully aware of the cultural context that this series is being written in, but that doesn’t mean that I have to like it, because I don’t.
And before anyone gets it twisted:
Both Lusamine and Ghetsis can rot in hell, NEITHER should have been redeemed. This is NOT me complaining about Ghetsis being treated as the piece of shit he is, but rather my anger at the fact that Lusamine got a pass because she birthed the children she abused, and Masters making that abundantly clear by having N and Ghetsis state in every single chapter of this event that they weren’t blood related.
But anyway, it’s nearly 4am, and I need sleep. I can continue being angry about Pokémon’s handling of abusive parents at a later date.

Saving Her (Ojiro Mashirao x Wolf!Reader)
Tumblr media
Part 3: Reuniting with Ojiro, protective Sero and Shoji, Aizawa’s temporary guardianship, Koda’s adorable rabbit and naptime.
Word Count: 4.8k
Tumblr media
Pelting towards him at full speed, you saw him drop his books just so he could catch you in his arms. You giggled as he wound his tail back in its familiar place around your middle once he drew back and nuzzled into his neck, breathing in his scent deeply.
A content growl rumbled from the back of your throat as you scented him.
He chuckled, ruffling your hair. "Y/N-chan, you're back!!"
A huge smile broke out on your face as one rivaling your happiness stretched across his and you hopped up and down once you broke apart from him.
Your eyes shone brilliantly with a light that put the stars to shame.
"Ojiro-san, everyone's been so nice and friendly to me!!" You waved your hands around wildly to convey to him your experience. "I met Tsu-chan and we were all in Yaoyorozu-san's room and Hagakure-san painted my nails, see?! And then Sato-san made a cake and it was so good!! I had no idea that things could be so fun and—"
You stopped dancing and lowered your arms when you saw the soft expression adorning his features. Despite his arms being crossed over his chest, he didn't seem closed off to you. It was more like he was observing something he really liked from far away.
Padding towards him, your head cocked to the side, furry ears twitching curiously. "Ojiro-san?"
"I'm really happy for you, Y/N-chan." Ojiro murmured breathlessly.
His confession had your heart thumping wildly in your chest. And in a much more intense way than you experienced with Sato and the girls.
Your breath caught in your throat and you swallowed thickly, growing shy in a way that the attentive observers scattered across the room didn't miss.
"Ooooo someone's got a crush." Kaminari teased from the sofa and you blushed.
Ojiro frowned at the uncomfortable spot you had been put in and subtly shook his head at the electric boy. But his heart skipped a beat when you didn't deny it and his gaze flickered back to you.
Your whole face had turned bright red and you were unable to look at him, mouth opening and closing, at a complete loss for words.
His tail snaked around your waist, tugging you closer until he could embrace you.
"It's okay." He whispered so only you could hear him. "Whether it's true or not, don't worry. I won't be scared off."
You sighed in relief but the tender moment was broken when someone wedged their way between the two of you.
Ojiro narrowed his eyes at the purple head in suspicion.
Mineta introduced himself, salivating at the mouth in a way that made you want to crawl someplace safe.
You curled into Ojiro's chest, wanting to hide your face but not wanting to seem rude. So you introduced yourself to him, suppressing the urge to snarl when his gaze didn't leave your chest.
Then, he was gone.
"Resident pervert." Sero warned you, the ball of tape by his side struggling on the floor from where he had tied him up.
He had come down for dinner but when he saw Mineta bothering you, he didn't hesitate to shoot his tape to bind him in it.
You blinked. Somehow when you weren't looking, Shoji had come to stand in front of you, acting like a shield with his duplicate arms stretched out.
"T-Thank you," You faced the two of them wide-eyed at what just happened. "Both of you. I-I didn't know what to say."
"Don't worry." Shoji said, gesturing towards the barely recognizing Mineta. "He's learning to respect women but in the meantime, this is the best solution."
Sero nodded his head in agreement, tugging the ball of protesting tape along the floor as he flashed you a thumbs up. "As long as you have Ojiro with you, you'll be just fine!!"
The two strolled away and everyone else resumed their studies.
The displeasure creasing Ojiro's features didn't leave and you lifted your hand, smoothing them out and poking his cheek up into a smile.
"It's true I don't know a lot about people, I know I can be naïve," You admitted quietly so that only he could hear. "Are you mad at me?"
He looked at you, shocked you would even think that. He was quick to reassure you. "No, no, of course not."
The tension disappeared and you exhaled shakily.
Taking your hand, he squeezed it once. "Let's go upstairs, I got you something."
At that, your ears immediately perked up and your tail began wagging furiously.
"What is it?!" You exclaimed, running around him only to be halted by where your hands were joined together. "I want to see!!"
Ojiro swore he heard Sato chuckle at your energy from the kitchen.
A disinterested tone floated from the doorway. "Before you do that—"
You paused mid-skip and would've gone crashing into the door that had just opened once more if it wasn't for Ojiro's quick thinking. He brought his tail up and you ran into it with an 'oof' as it slammed into your chest, knocking the wind out of you but successfully catching you in time.
"Take a look at this first and tell me what you think." Aizawa finished, holding something up.
Arms draped over Ojiro's tail from where he had caught you, you smiled sheepishly as he shook his head at your antics, lowering you so that your feet were planted firmly on the ground.
Aizawa held out a single sheet of paper and you took it, scanning over it relatively quickly.
"A guardian?" You inquired with a tilt of your head.
He nodded, hands stuffed in the front of his pockets as he leaned against the frame of the door. "For legal reasons. This will allow you to do as you please as well as enroll in UA."
You flipped it over and then back again, confusion clear as day on your face.
"I don't understand. Why are you asking me?"
According to the contract, all he needed to do was sign it. It didn't make sense to you why he would let you know ahead of time. You weren't used to such consideration.
Pushing off of his post, he strode over to where you were. If you didn't already know that he was a softie underneath that unapproachable front, you would've been scared as he towered over you.
"Because it involves you." He scoffed lightly. "Your guardian will be me until you find another home if that's what you want. This is a binding agreement that'll secure your safety for now. If you agree then I'll sign it but if not then you'll have to leave here until Principal Nezu and All Might can call in a few more favors."
Your jaw dropped at the mention of the number one hero. "All Might?!"
Aizawa looked like he got this reaction all the time from people so you shut your mouth and cleared your throat.
"What does it do to you?" You asked meekly, wondering what he would be getting into if he signed the contract.
"Do?" He raised an eyebrow, shrugging his shoulders. "It makes me responsible for you, that's all."
"... I," You gulped. "I-I..."
You couldn't bring yourself to say it no matter how hard you tried.
Ojiro watched you visibly struggle with it and wanted to go to you but Shoji's hand on his shoulder prevented him from doing so. Instead, he was forced to shift his books in his arms, his backpack unusually heavy as he waited for the silence to be resolved.
Aizawa noticed your conflicted emotions. You were more concerned with how this would affect him rather than you. To think of his feelings first before your own made a flicker of admiration shoot through him.
You sure had potential.
You let out a small squeak when he rested his hand on your head, blinking up at him with big eyes.
"You're not tying me down, kid."
He called you out on exactly what you were worried about.
"So stop thinking you're being a burden." He told you, retracting his hand when he saw some of his students watching the exchange.
Tears welled up in your eyes and you hastily brushed them away before they could fall. Handing the paper back to him, you gazed up at him with earnest eyes.
"Thank you," You said softly. "I understand you could've easily given me away, so thank you. I won't cause any trouble, I promise."
A rare chuckle rumbled through his chest. "Yeah, I know, kid."
You shut the door behind him as Aizawa walked out the dormitory, clutching your hands tightly to your chest with an uncharacteristically solemn expression.
But Ojiro could read you better than that. Your tail was lashing back and forth like his did when he was unbelievably happy.
He couldn't stop himself from laughing when it became uncontrollable to the point where you actually grabbed onto it to stop it from giving away your feelings.
"You're happy." He remarked and you grinned.
"Don't tell him, he'll never let me live it down." You joked, offering to carry his books since it looked like his arms would give out any moment.
You waved goodbye to Asui and Tokoyami as you both headed up towards his room.
The elevators had gotten a bit more bearable to you but they still were a pain since they were so anxiety inducing. You never knew how you could be so scared of something you had no prior knowledge of before but you supposed that came with not knowing how the world worked.
You had been hidden away for a long time. Now, it was like dipping your toes in an endless ocean of possibilities.
He would give anything to make sure your future wasn't filled with the pain of your past.
Noticing he was caught up in his thoughts, you shot ahead of him sneakily.
Ojiro was so busy thinking that he nearly crashed face-first into the door which mysteriously shut in front of him. A smile twitched at the edge of his mouth and he cleared this throat.
"I could've sworn this was open a minute ago." He said loud enough for you to hear inside.
Your giggles filtered through the wood separating the two of you and with some difficulty, he managed to get it open.
"You seemed so distracted that I couldn't help playing a little." You teased, sitting on the floor in the middle of his room.
He swallowed, setting down his textbooks on his desk. Seeing you like that, tail waving behind you with an eagerness as if you were waiting for him made his heart pound harder.
You remained blissfully unaware of his surfacing feelings as you sniffed his backpack.
"Soooo, what's the surprise?!" You cried eagerly.
Ojiro barked out a laugh, unzipping it to pull out a large, compressed package and tossed it to you.
Thanks to your reflexes, you caught it effortlessly and flipped it over, reading the writing on the front.
"Yuzu beef jerky." He explained, scratching the back of his neck bashfully as your eyes lit up. "I know we don't have any meat in the fridge at the moment, Bakugou was supposed to go get some more last week but he forgot so I got something to hold you over until we go again."
Your eyes glistened with tears, touched to the core once again by his thoughtfulness and you were reminded of everyone's kindness. You felt the urge to repay it, to thank them properly and filed it away for later.
Ojiro nearly choked on his saliva when you knelt down in front of him, your canines poking out in the brightest smile he's seen to date.
"Thank you, Ojiro-kun." You breathed.
He relaxed and his eyes grew fond.
You squealed as he ruffled your hair, batting at his hand playfully, but in truth, didn't want him to stop.
He laughed, patting your head a couple more times before sinking down in the chair by his desk. "I have to work on some stuff but you're more than welcome to stay unless you'd be more comfortable with one of the girls or in a room of your own."
He pointed to the jerky you had already torn open and was wrestling with it in the corner. "I know Jirou-chan likes that stuff too, so you could give some to her if you'd like."
You pouted, shaking your head and clinging to it almost possessively. "Mine."
You had nothing against your friend but he had given this to you. It was a gift and you wanted it all to yourself.
Chuckling, Ojiro left you to your own devices while he got started on his homework. He would need help from Yaoyorozu later on with math but he could knock out the majority of it for now. Tapping his pencil mindlessly, his mouth pressed in a hard line as he hammered out worksheet after worksheet.
It wasn't until a puff of warm breath hit the back of his neck did he look up.
You were gazing at his homework with sort of an awed expression and he shuffled back so that you could see.
"Want to learn?" He offered. "It's not particularly interesting but it might make the time pass by quicker."
You nodded eagerly, plopping on his lap before he could stop you. You twisted around when he tensed underneath you.
Sputtering, Ojiro's cheeks colored at your innocence. He knew you were doing that just so you could see better but he couldn't deny how perfect you were for him. Your height made it perfect so that you were nestled right below his chin and he wondered what it would be like if he just rested it on your shoulder for a second.
Your tail was curled around your leg as you sat in between his thighs and your back was pressed flush up against his chest as you studied the numbers and words on the page.
Tilting your head up when he didn't start explaining, you wrung your hands anxiously in your lap. "Am I heavy?"
"N-No, princess," He stammered, the pet name slipping out again despite his best efforts to bite his tongue. "You're not."
Holy All Might, were you always so freaking cute?
You looked adorable, peering up at him like that and he felt like he was about to combust. The fact that you were still wearing his hoodie didn't make it any better.
You already looked like you were his.
Swallowing the lump caught in his throat, he began to stumble over his words, pointing out different equations to you on the paper, ones that he had already solved so you could see the process before giving you something to write with to practice on your own.
Your tongue poked out between your lips in concentration as you tried to solve it like he did. Then, you shuddered.
Despite the warm hoodie you had on, the AC was blasting and you were getting cold.
You tried to hide it from him. After all, he had already given you so much. You didn't want to keep taking advantage of his kindness.
You didn't get a chance to debate about it anymore in your head because a set of hands inched across your tummy hesitantly. You knew he was asking you if you were cold and you cursed your inability to conceal it from his keen eyes.
Sinking back further into his chest, you gave your answer and his arms hugged your waist from behind.
Either one of you could have easily gotten up to get his blanket but neither one of you wanted to move.
You were naturally very affectionate and in return, you were growing used to accepting a lot of affection from him, but somehow this time, it felt different. It didn't feel like the casual affection you experienced from Aizawa and the girls, this felt warm.
Intimate.
And as much as you didn't want to admit it, you desperately never wanted to leave his embrace.
The two of you jumped when there was a knock on the door.
Out of instinct, Ojiro squeezed your middle, ready to whisk you away at a moment's notice just like that day he rescued you.
Unfortunately, that caused you to squeak and the next second, the door cracked open.
Ojiro visibly relaxed when he saw his friend holding his pet rabbit. "Koda-kun!!"
He waved hello to the both of you and you returned it shyly as Ojiro invited him in. Internally, you wondered if you should get off of Ojiro now but really not wanting to.
Little did you know, he was feeling the same way.
The teen behind you nudged your shoulder and pinched your side to gain your attention. "He knew your first day back must've been kind of stressful so he offered to let you play with Yuwai-chan if you want to."
Intrigued by the creature exploring the room, you reluctantly climbed off of Ojiro, getting on all fours and following the bunny. You were unsure if it wanted to play with you since you were sure you seemed scary to such a fragile animal.
"You're not afraid I'll eat her?" You asked Koda.
Usually people ran at the sight of your canines.
He shook his head. Ojiro said you didn't have a mean bone in your body and he trusted him. He only wanted you to get more acclimated to the rest of his class and since he lacked the social skills, he was hoping to accomplish it through this instead.
Koda didn't talk much but you didn't mind at all. Choosing a spot on the floor, you tucked your knees up to your chest and waited for her to come towards you.
The domesticated bunny eventually crawled into your lap and you internally exploded at how soft and tiny she was.
"Kawaii..." You murmured to yourself as you petted her fur.
Ojiro smiled, sharing a look with Koda as you handled the latter's treasured pet with so much care. He couldn't bring himself to look away for fear he would forget how happy you looked.
You lifted your head and your gaze locked with Koda's. "Kawaii-chan!!"
Koda smiled at you happily and you beamed, eyes flickering over to Ojiro.
He was pretty sure his heart stopped. You were seeking his approval.
"It's a cute name." Ojiro commented softly.
You wiggled happily in place, squealing when the bunny burrowed her way into your arms and promptly fell asleep.
After some time, you handed her back to her rightful owner and resumed your previous position on Ojiro once he didn't protest. You bit down on your lip to keep the smile from spreading too far as his hands settled on your waist.
"Can," You cursed how meek you sounded. "Can you hug me again?"
All traces of nervousness faded as he obeyed almost immediately and you laughed breathlessly when his fingers danced along your sides.
"Stop that!!" You protested, unable to stop giggling before your hands shot to his wrists in a desperate attempt to pry him off.
Ojiro grinned, doing it again before conceding and stopping.
"It seems like you have a weakness, Y/N-chan." He whispered in your ear and you snorted.
"Who would be immune to tickling?"
You stiffened as his chin rested lightly on your head, in between your ears.
"C'mon, let's see if you can finish those four problems before I get the rest of this done." He challenged with a smile.
You grinned. Challenge accepted.
Before either one of you knew it, it was getting close to midnight. Everyone else was already in bed or fast asleep.
Everyone except for the two of you.
You had successfully completed his challenging questions for you to solve and as you proudly showed off your work, he had praised you. Not just for getting them right but for all the effort you had put in, emphasizing the latter.
You were sure you had never felt more touched by his genuine words. The two of you had moved to his futon once he finally set down his pencil, done for the night.
You were supposed to have your own room but since that only was going to come about once Aizawa signed the agreement, you didn't have a place of your own for one more night. The girls had kindly offered up their rooms for you to crash in but you had respectfully declined, saying you wanted to be with Ojiro.
You felt most comfortable with him.
They weren't worried for you. He was one of the purest boys in the class and had already shown he would never harm a hair on your head.
He had offered you another one of his sweatshirts and was puzzled when you nodded so fast, he was afraid your head would fall off. His unspoken question lingering in the air was answered when he caught you sniffing it once you thought he wasn't looking.
I'm whipped for her already...
You were about to make yourself comfortable on the floor when you saw him doing the same. The two of you glared at each other for the first time, engaged in a staring match that would end when the other caved and took the bed.
"What are you doing?" You growled through clenched teeth.
"Sleeping." Ojiro answered nonchalantly, fluffing his pillow only to have it snatched out from under him and tossed onto the futon with so much force it was a wonder how feathers weren't flying out of it.
"Get off the floor, Ojiro-kun." Your eyes glinted. "I won't take no for an answer."
"This is my room, Y/N-chan." He said firmly with absolutely no malice in his voice. "And as a guest, you're required to sleep in the bed."
You shook your head, crossing your arms childishly over your chest. He shot you a warning look but you stubbornly stayed put.
"Time's up." He declared, pushing himself up to his feet and striding over to you.
"Wha—" You cut off with a yelp as he hoisted you easily into the air. "Ojiro-kun!! Put me down!!"
A smirk pulled at the corner of his lips. "Okay."
You shrieked as he dropped you onto the bed, bouncing a couple of times before shooting him a glare. "Ojiro!!"
He wouldn't let you get up, placing his hands on either side of your hips and leaned in close, staring at you intently. Your cheeks reddened and all protests of how evil he was died on your tongue the second he was a millimeter away from you.
"Sleep here, okay?" He pleaded, expression giving way to concern. "I don't want you to sleep on the floor. You deserve better than that."
You couldn't tear your gaze away from him. "But... But if you sleep on the floor—"
"I'll be alright, don't worry." He reassured you, patting your head and offering up a comforting smile.
You wanted to argue but lacked the energy to do so.
This time, you didn't resist as he tucked you in. Surrendering yourself to the exhaustion that had just kicked in, you were completely unaware of the fond gaze trained on your face.
It had to be sometime during 3 am when it started.
At first, it was just little things that woke him up. Rustling barely distinguishable until it got more frequent. Soft whimpers filled with poorly suppressed anguish followed not long after. It wasn't until you screamed that he tore off the covers and bundled you in his arms.
"Y/N, Y/N!! Wake up!!" He pleaded desperately.
Your eyes were crazed and feral when they shot open and Ojiro almost had a heart attack at the blood staining your teeth from where you had bit your lip. Your lip was busted but he didn't have time to dwell on it now.
"It's okay, it's okay, I got you." He chanted over and over again as he rocked you back and forth in his arms. "It was just a nightmare, you're safe now. I promise."
You couldn't calm down. Your chest was tight and you felt like you couldn't breathe. You were panicking, hyperventilating.
Your heartbeat was loud in your ears and you couldn't hear anything else.
Ojiro hushed you softly, stroking your hair tenderly. "It's okay, I'm here. I'm here, Y/N."
He continued to soothe you gently, combing his finger through your hair to calm you down, his other arm wrapped around your waist, holding you close. It wasn't until ten minutes later that you had finally started to calm down and come to your senses. And then you started to cry.
Silently, as if you couldn't make any noise.
At first, he was worried that you couldn't breathe but when you started hiccuping, he couldn't suppress the small twinge of relief he felt and focused on helping you through it.
The next thing you wanted to do when you regained control of your breathing was to apologize for waking him up but he wasn't having it.
"It's okay," He whispered, tucking your hair behind your ears. "You're not alone. I'm here for you."
You clutched onto his t-shirt tighter, the material growing sheer as your tears flowed.
Ojiro rubbed your back soothingly, his big brother instincts kicking in from when he would comfort his little sister.
"What do you need?" He asked kindly.
Your muffled reply in his chest had him smiling faintly. Your thighs were straddled on either side of his hips but neither of you noticed how close you were sitting to him until you were practically pressed chest to chest.
His warmth enveloped you like a blanket as he held you.
"I can't quite hear you, princess." Ojiro joked, hoping to hear you laugh.
A flush creeped up your neck as you put him at arm's length.
"Can... C-Can you s-stay with me?" You managed to say, embarrassed to be asking for such a thing this late at night.
An identical blush overtook his features but he nodded, easing you back down so that you could both lay comfortably on the bed. He let you arrange him however you wanted, somewhat surprised when you snuggled into his chest. His hand hovered over your waist for a moment and he lowered it slowly.
"Is this okay?" He asked, making sure he wasn't crossing any boundaries.
You nodded sleepily, clutching onto the front of his shirt weakly. "Yes, I want you to hold me... please? If that's okay..."
He was never going to be one to say no to you. Draping his arm over your waist, he pulled the blankets up, ensuring you were all the way covered.
You pouted when his chest shook with laughter. "What are you laughing at, huh?"
Your hand flew up to cover your face out of the embarrassment of being laughed at but you were closer to him than you expected.
He caught your wrist deftly before you could accidentally hit him, shaking his head with an easy smile. "You're just very cute, that's all."
If it wasn't so late at night and he didn't have a near heart attack seeing you in that panicking state, he probably wouldn't have let it slip out. But weird things happened at 3 am and he wasn't in the mood to dispute it.
And neither were you.
Literally. You were speechless. How in the world did he find you cute? Those were two words you never heard before.
Ojiro's breath hitched when you tangled your legs with his, your bare foot brushing against his.
"Shoot, Y/N, you're freezing!!" He exclaimed in shock.
You squeezed your eyes shut when he crowded you closer, bringing you in so tight you thought you were going to lose your ability to breathe.
Cheeks puffing out petulantly, your voice came out stifled. "Ojiro-kun, you're squishing me."
Your strained mumble made him jump apart but you caught his collar before he could escape. Tail hitting the wall behind you, you didn't let up your grip.
Eyes widening in alarm as he moved, you feared you would be left all alone again. "... Don't go."
He froze as vulnerability shook your voice. Wrapping his arms around you again but looser this time so that you could breathe comfortably, he molded his body around you, tail winding around his leg.
In this position, you could hear his heart beating against your ear loud and clear.
Your eyes fluttered close and it lulled you to sleep once more, wrapped in a warm blanket of safety that kept the terrors away for the rest of the night.
"Thank you... Ojiro..." You whispered.
He smiled softly, resting his chin on top of your head as he crooked your face into his neck, your breathing evening out once you finally fell back asleep. He made sure that his tail wrapped around your leg.
To keep you close during the night and constantly reassure you that he was there. No matter what.
Anytime, Y/N.

Chapter 11
Tumblr media
Frank looked up as Fliss walked into her parent’s kitchen and his mouth dropped open. She was dressed in a gorgeous long legged strapless jumpsuit along which the neckline was embellished with lace flowers which spread down the sheer sleeves. Her long hair was styled in loose curls and she’d done something to her make up that made her cheek bones stand out even more. Her eyelids were adorned with a deep green that shimmered and made her dark eyes pop and she had a clear gloss on her plump lips. Fuck, she looked stunning. But as he watched, he saw her face fall and she bit her lip.
“Is it…is it not ok?” She asked shyly “I can change…I mean…”
“Don’t you dare.” He said sternly, stepping forward, his hands falling to her hips “Honey, you look amazing.”
Her face lit up and she smiled at him, shyly “I wasn’t sure how posh to go or…”
“Lissy…” He chuckled “Stop it.”
“Sorry.” She wrinkled her nose as she stepped back slightly and looked him up and down, taking in his dark jeans, boots and light denim button down. “You look pretty good too Sailor.” she smiled, running her hands up his chest to his shoulder and he noticed then she was also wearing her Pandora. He smiled back, his eyes also spotting that her neck was bare and then had the perfect idea for a final Christmas Gift he had been struggling to come up with. With a soft smile he leaned down, taking in that she was slightly taller than usual thanks to her heels and he pressed a gentle kiss to her mouth.
“Get a room…” Bill shot as he walked into the kitchen, Mary in tow.
“Bore off.” Fliss shot back, looking at her dad as he sent her a grin before he did a double take.
“Wow, you look cracking Titch.”
“Thanks” she smiled
“You ready to go?”
“Sure you don’t mind dropping us?” Frank turned to look at Bill “It’s no problem to get a cab.”
“It’s no bother at all, besides, I need to collect the Thai anyway.” Bill waved him off.
“You’re getting Thai?” Frank raised an eyebrow and glanced at Mary “Funny that just so happens to be your favourite…”
She shrugged “Verity asked what I wanted for dinner.”
Frank sighed and looked at Bill “You spoil her.”
Bill shrugged “And?”
Frank rolled his eyes a soft smile playing on his face. The way that Bill and Verity had welcomed Mary, and him for that matter, into their lives still amazed him. Whilst he and Fliss had only been officially together four weeks or so now, they’d opened their doors to him the day they had met pretty much back in August and he was eternally grateful. Mary got a sense of family, something he had wanted her to have all her life. It had even been brought up at the Court Hearing earlier that week where the paperwork had been signed awarding him legal guardianship status, the woman from the Child services department commenting in the court room that Mary had been gushing about Bill, Verity and Fliss, and seemed extremely settled.
Frank was simply relieved all of it was more or less over.
The last two weeks had been stressful as Greg had been handling the main discussions with the state for him and when they’d sat down one night to go over the notes for the settlement they had proposed, Greg told Frank that 2 major conditions would be set. Firstly that he found a home to allow Mary a room of her own and secondly that she was given access to a higher, more challenging form of education. After a bit of discussion with Mary, who had insisted she didn’t want to go to a posh school, Greg had done a little research into previous cases and come up with a suggestion that Child Services agreed with. They would provide a scholarship grant that would allow Mary to attend a number of University classes a few days a week and then her normal school the rest. It was a middle ground, giving Mary the mental stimulation she needed but also allowing her to be a normal kid. It was agreed she would return to normal school when term started in January and the arrangements would be made with the University to start there when their term picked up the middle of the same month. Frank had insisted that she wouldn’t be taking any exams or anything like that, just doing the work, keeping herself occupied. The judge had accepted the proposal, giving Frank 6 months to find alternative living arrangements, and had then awarded the Guardianship temporarily with the instruction it be awarded permanently upon a review in 6 months. So whilst not 100% complete, it was almost there, and Frank knew that as long as he did what they said, there would be no problem. The other good thing was nothing had legally been awarded to Evelyn, after she had remained completely absent from the proceedings. Which meant that if she did reach out, Frank would have total control over where and how often contact took place. Which suited him fine as he could ensure it was on Mary’s terms completely.
“Hey…you ok?” Fliss asked, rubbing his arm. He jerked round, realising he had been completely elsewhere and gave her a smile.
“Yeah, sorry, was just thinking.”
“Did it hurt?” Mary asked and Frank shot her a look as Fliss and Bill laughed as Mary left with the drink she had come in to the kitchen for.
Frank followed her into the living room as she perched on the large sofa next to Verity, the pair of them looking at something on the laptop.
“Behave.” Frank looked at Mary. “Go to bed when V and Bill tell you, no back chat or arguing…”
She saluted him and V looked up smiling. “Stop fussing Frank, she’s never any trouble.”
Frank nodded and then headed out to Bill’s Range Rover catching Fliss up.
“You do realise she’s gonna be up until midnight, pigging out on junk and watching movies right?” Fliss said as he reached her side, looping an arm round her waist.
“Yup.” Frank said “But she’s staying over there and not in the Annex, which means she’ll wake them up at stupid AM in the morning after no sleep and not us so I don’t much care…”
A little while later Frank guided her into Bongos Beach Bar and over to a booth at the far side. Fliss smiled as she recognised Greg, and Frank introduced her to his wife Zara, then his friend Jake and his fiancée Lisa. Finally she smiled at Simon who then excused himself heading off to meet his date at the door.
“Date?” Frank raised an eyebrow
“Yeah he’s been seeing her for about three weeks.” Zara supplied “He invited her tonight…”
“Huh, must be serious.” Frank mused and Jake looked at him.
“Could say the same about you.” He teased and Frank shoved him on the shoulder.
“Prick.”
Jake laughed and then raised his hand “They’re here now.”
Frank turned to see Simon making his way over towards them with a familiar brunette in tow.
Oh for fucks sake…
“Bonnie…” Fliss smiled at her as the woman stilled when she saw her and Frank.
“You know each other?” Simon asked, frowning slightly.
“Yeah, errr…” Frank began, wondering how the hell he was going to get out of this when Fliss spoke up.
“Bonnie is, was, still is I suppose, Mary’s teacher.”
Bonnie shot her a grateful look and Fliss simply smiled as Simon made a noise of comprehension.
"I should have twigged!” Simon smiled, as they all took a seat at the booth. Zara handed out a few glasses of prosecco from the bottle that sat on the table to Bonnie and Fliss who both thanked her, the men grabbing a beer from the bucket.
“Thank you.” Frank whispered into Fliss’ ear as she turned to look at him. “I didn’t know he was seeing her, or that she was gonna be here, I promise…”
Fliss frowned and shrugged “It’s fine.” she said, almost as if she was puzzled as to why he was apologising. The confusion on his face must have shown as she smiled and lay her hand on his knee. “Frank, I don’t have a problem with Bonnie. I still think it was a stupid thing to do but…” she shrugged.
He smiled at her and dropped a kiss to her cheek. “You’re fucking amazing you know that?”
“Yep…” she popped the p, grinning at him as she took a drink from her champagne glass.
Fliss kept up with the conversation, but she soon realised that as nice as they were, Zara and Lisa were just not her type of people. With both their husbands having well paid jobs, as a lawyer and a bank manager, both were stay at home mums with a lot of money to spend and time on their hands. Plus they clearly spent a lot of time together so a lot of the chatter they made between themselves, leaving Fliss to simply listen.
At one point she glanced at Bonnie who was sat, nervously twisting her fingers together before she excused herself and headed over to the bathroom. Fliss gave it a few seconds before she too did the same, Frank moving so she could squeeze past him, hands falling to her hips as she went.
“Hey…” Fliss looked at Bonnie who was stood leaning on a sink. “You ok?”
“Yeah, I err, well, I don’t know about you but I feel a little out of place. I mean they’re nice enough but…“
"Kinda feels like we’re outsiders.” Fliss nodded finishing the sentence for her.
Bonnie snorted “I feel like they’re judging me a little. Like I’m a teacher…who has to work, and it’s not a great job…”
“Dude, I shovel shit for a living and Frank’s a grease monkey.” Fliss shot causing Bonnie to snort. “It’s not that at all, they’re just friends and we’re…well…”
 “Strangers…” Bonnie nodded.
“Exactly.” Fliss shrugged “Trust me, I’ve done the whole awkward social circle thing before, this…well, this is actually kinda nice in comparison. I met some real ass hats when I was with my ex. These guys are ok”
Bonnie smiled and then she grinned cheekily "Wanna go do tequila?”
“Fuck, yes.” Fliss nodded and they left the bathroom giggling, heading straight to the bar. Bonnie placed her order and slid a note over the bar as they both settled on a stool. Fliss glanced round to the booth where Frank was sat talking to the rest of his friends before she turned back to Bonnie who slid her a shot over. Without a word they both had their salt, downed the shot, then bit into the lemon, both grimacing and laughing as Fliss ordered another two and asked Bonnie what long drink she wanted. Turns out she was also a gin and tonic woman.
“I’m glad you and Frank ended up together.” Bonnie smiled at her. “It’s nice.”
“Thanks.” Fliss grinned. “Kinda crept up on me a little, you know? I wasn’t looking for anything but...”
“I’m glad me and him didn’t ruin it.” Bonnie said gently “That entire night was a huge mistake…I could tell the day after he regretted it.”
Fliss shrugged “Well we all do dumb shit.”
“Say that again.” Bonnie mumbled as their second shots arrived along with their gin.
“You know when he told me he’d told you it was a mistake I went mad at him.” Fliss snorted “I mean, talk about a shitty thing to say.”
“Oh that’s not the half of it, he-…” Bonnie trailed off and shook her head as she took a drink of her gin. “Forget it, doesn’t matter.”
“What?” Fliss pressed.
“Nope.” Bonnie shook her head firmly.
“You can’t just say that and not tell me!“ Fliss whined as Bonnie downed her shot, before she sighed
“He called me by your name, twice.”
Fliss choked on her gin, her eyes wide “What, when you…”
Bonnie nodded.
“Ok, so I feel like I should be apologising…” Fliss snorted, “Not sure what for but…” Bonnie chuckled as Fliss shook her head and continued “How did you not rip his cock off…I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m very glad you didn’t but…”
Bonnie laughed loudly as Fliss sprinkled more salt onto her hand “It’s not a big deal, he was mortified when I told him.”
“So he should be…” Fliss shook her head, as she picked up her tequila.
She turned to look at Frank who was now looking round the bar, questioningly. He spotted her at the bar and raised an eyebrow and she met him with a look of her own. “I’m dating an ass hole.” she said, turning back to Bonnie “He’s cute though.”
There was a pause before they both laughed, and Bonnie gestured to the empty glasses. Fliss shrugged and Bonnie, with a grin, ordered another 2 shots.
****
“So, how’s the new job Frank?” Simon looked at him and Frank smiled, taking a pull from his bottle.
“I don’t start until January.” he swallowed his drink, “But yeah, looking forward to it. Full time wage, benefits…what’s not to like?”
“And a boss.” Greg said, and Frank laughed.
“Well, be kinda nice not to have to think about where the next job is coming from.” he shrugged, “I still get to do what I enjoy but less stress…”
Greg, Simon and Jake all exchanged a look which Frank didn’t miss. He gave a sigh. “What?”
“Nothing…”  Jake smirked “Just watching you finally growing up is bringing a tear to my eye. I mean, you brought a girl to our Christmas gathering, the first one ever…in the history of the Circle of Truth holding Christmas gatherings…”
“Yeah, I imagine this is what it’s like waving your kid off to university.” Simon nodded.
Frank raised his middle finger at them all, causing them to laugh.
“We’re only joking.” Simon winked at him. “In all seriousness, it’s nice to see.”
Frank shook his head “You make it sounds like I’m some kind of utter disaster case…”
They all paused and once again looked at each other. “Oh fuck you.” Frank snorted as they all laughed again.
Anyone seen the ladies?” Greg looiked around suddenly.
“Oh, I think Zara and Lisa are on the dance floor…” Jake nodded.
Frank glanced round the bar, looking and saw that indeed they were but there was no sign of Fliss. Or Bonnie for that matter. Fliss had gone to the bathroom a while back but surely it couldn’t be that long to pee, even if you were a girl.
“Oh, looks like our girls are getting on…” Simon jerked his head to the bar. Frank turned in his seat and glanced over and saw Fliss laugh at something Bonnie said, before she licked a line of salt off her hand, downed the shot, and bit into the lemon. He couldn’t decide if he was relieved or a little weirded out at how cool Fliss was around the woman he’d almost ruined his chances with her over, but as he watched her cutting loose, talking to Bonnie, the two women locked in a very friendly exchange he felt his chest warm. Fliss had openly admitted to him not long back she was a little lonely, her own friends being in England and the ones she had in Boston, well, they’d not really been her friends, more his. He supposed it was nice to see her with someone like that, even if it as one of his one night conquests. As he watched Fliss spluttered on her drink and looked at Bonnie, another exchange was had before Fliss picked up her next tequila and looked at him. He raised a questioning eyebrow but all she did was smirk and turn back to Bonnie. With a slight shrug he turned to Simon.
“Wanna join em?”
Simon nodded “Yeah, why not.
They excused themselves from the booth and headed over. Fliss smiled as Frank slid an arm round her waist and dropped a kiss to her neck, before Simon grinned and nodded as he added another 2 tequilas to their order.
Several more shots and gins later Fliss was drunk. So was Frank. Which was the reason the two of them had ended up on the outside beach dancefloor, dancing to some random Christmas shit. It was also the reason Frank’s denim button down was now un-done revealing his white sleeveless which he had on underneath, giving Fliss a perfect view of that collar bone tattoo she loved so much. It hadn’t surprised her in the slightest when he had explained where the words were from, being a man of philosophy and all that. She also loved the reason behind his Taurus tattoo, it being Mary’s zodiac sign. Basically her sailor underneath all his bravado was a huge sentimental sap. A huge, sentimental sap whose hands were once again now cupping her ass as they swayed together to the music. Fliss had long given up reaching around to restore them to the bottom of her back and simply smirked to herself slightly as she looked round the dancefloor and out across the dark ocean
“Still not right.” she murmured.
“What?”
“This…” she made an elaborate gesture with her arm and hit a guy next to her. “Whoops…sorry.” she grimaced as Frank snorted, the guy simply shrugged and carried on his way. “I mean…no snow at Christmas…”
“Yeah but, you’re outside, on a Christmas dancefloor, on the beach” he shrugged “I mean it’s kinda cool…”
“Suppose…” she shrugged, and then she paused, and Frank watched as a gorgeous grin spread across her face whilst she cocked her head to the music. It had just morphed into Fairy Tale of New York and she let out a whoop “I fucking love this one!”
There was a loud cheer from someone and suddenly the two of them were squashed together as Simon and Bonnie appeared, followed by the rest of the group and they found themselves in a circle,  arms tangled around shoulders, the girls singing the girls part and the boys singing the boys part. At one point someone dressed as Santa muscled into the middle of the group, simply giving a loud cheer before he exited and moved elsewhere, causing Fliss to snort hysterically, hanging onto Frank’s arm as she did. As the song ended, everyone belting out the last line the group descended into giggles and Frank just watched his girl. Her cheeks were flushed, hair was slightly frizzier now thanks to the humid outdoor air and she was absolutely the wrong side of wasted but god did he love that woman.
Oh.
He loved her.
Frank Adler, one time self-proclaimed bachelor, king of the Friday night fucks was in love. When did that happen?
As he watched her lean in and say something to Greg who burst out laughing he realised he couldn’t pin point it. It had crept up on him, like a slow burn, a deep fire in the very core of his belly. And damned did that fire feel hot.
Frank reached for his girl and pulled her away from Greg. She stumbled slightly into his arms and she looked up at him, giggling a little and he cut her off with a deep kiss. And before he could stop himself, he blurted it out, right there in the middle of a temporary beach dancefloor
“I love you.”
If anyone else in the group had heard they were tactful enough to all turn away, pretending not to, but there’s no way they could have missed Fliss when she pulled back, a look of shock on her face which morphed into a grin and she pointed at Frank
“Youuuu loooooveeee meeee!” she sang and Frank felt himself blush.
“Yeah, do you hafta announce it to the entire of South Pass?” his Boston accent dripped off his tongue.
“Youuuu loooooooveeee meeee!” she said again and he groaned, pulling her closer. She leaned up so she could whisper into his ear, and damned the touch of her lips against his ear aroused him far more than was appropriate for the middle of a public dance floor.
“Wanna know a secret Sailor?” she asked. He turned his head to look at her and she smirked at him “I love you too.”
Well fuck.
Despite the fact they were both trashed, they both knew this wasn’t just a heat of the moment thing. Both felt it, both knew that whatever it was they had was different, special, a part of them now and Frank felt himself mimicking the stupid smile on her face. He leaned down to kiss her again, and her hands tangled into his hair, the feel of her delicate nails on his scalp sent hot pokers to his belly and his already half growing arousal was, well, aroused even more.
“And that’s even though you’re an asshole who calls someone else’s name during sex.” she pulled away. With a groan Frank hung his head as her arms linked around his neck, his hands locking behind her back.
“You know about that?” He asked with a little hiccup. “She told you?”
“Yup.” Fliss narrowed her eyes “And FYI you do that to me I’ll cut your balls off and feed them to Thor.”
“Harsh but fair.” Frank conceded after a short pause.  She grinned and leaned up to kiss him again before she pulled away.
“Can we go now ‘cause I’m kinda horny.”
Ok, so Drunk Fliss was another Fliss to add to his list of favourite Flisses. Along with Sassy, shy, stern, sleepy, just fucked, just woken up…basically all the Flisses
“Nope.” He teased “I’m good here.”
“Really?” She asked, pressing closer to him, tilting a little and he grunted as her hip bone pressed into his groin “Sure about that?”
“Yup.” He managed to squeak out.
“That must be a spanner in your pocket then. Or a screwdriver, or some other form of pointy tool…” She was hardly able to finish the sentence she was laughing that much.
“Yeah, those…damned pointy tools…” He shook his head as he leaned down to kiss her. It was sloppy, open mouthed, full of tongue and absolutely filthy and left the pair of them in a bit of a daze. Frank pulled away and looked around, taking a deep breath “Ok, we can go now.”
Somehow they made it home in one piece. It took Fliss three attempts to get the key in the lock, the pair of them giggling like a couple of school kids, before she finally managed it and Frank leaned over and pushed the door open. Fliss stumbled slightly and Frank caught her, laughing.
“Shhh” He said.
“What for?” She asked, kicking off her shoes.
He paused for a moment and then shrugged “Actually I don’t know…”
“Idiot…” She sniggered, pushing his undone shirt down his arms before pulling at the bottom of his sleeveless underneath. He moved so she could pull it over his head and as her fingers started to undo the button at the top of his jeans he reached round and gently found the zipper on her jumpsuit, sliding it down, his fingers gently skimming her back as they backed to the couch. Fliss fell over the arm with a thud, Frank following, before the momentum tripped him and he rolled onto the floor, pulling her with him, landing with a thud on his back. She fell on top of him, her elbow catching him in the ribs and he gave a loud huff, before she laughed and leaned over kissing him. His hands tangled into her hair, keeping her head angled perfectly, the kiss searing, leaving them breathless. Fliss pulled back and he brushed her hair back with both his hands, smiling softly at her.
“I meant what I said you know.” He looked at her
“Remind me again what that was.” She teased.
“I…” he leaned up and pecked her lips “love…” another peck “you.”
“Tell me when you’re sober.” she sassed back and gave a squeal as he whipped her over so she was on her back on the rug by the coffee table, framed between his strong arms and legs.
“In vino veritas.” He quipped and she propped herself up on her elbows, the front of her jumpsuit fell forward slightly and Frank blatantly stole a look down it at her lacy strapless bra, giving a groan.
“Yeah, and in vino a load of non-sensitas too…” She grinned and he gave a snort, as he dipped his head.
“Shut up.” he mumbled, his lips pressing onto hers again.
 *****
Frank groaned, blinking against the light that was streaming in through the crack in the curtains. Jesus Christ his head hurt. Rolling over he was met with a face full of hair and he blew it out of the way, smoothing down Fliss’s wild locks which were splayed all over the pillow. Gently sliding an arm under her neck he dropped the other one round her bare waist and pulled her into him, her back pressing to his chest as he snuggled close, screwing his eyes closed against the painful daylight.
“What year is it?” Fliss groaned and Frank chuckled slightly.
“Feeling rough, baby?”
“Rough?” She croaked “I feel like I have a smurf in my head with a pick axe. This is all your fault.”
“My fault?“
“Yes you let me drink tequila with Bonnie.”
“Ok, first off I didn’t know you were doing that until I saw you at the bar…”
“Yeah, and then you and Simon joined in…
“…and second off, you’re a grown ass woman. You make your own decisions.”
She groaned again and then stilled “Fuck, we had sex last night…”
“Wow.” Frank laughed. “Way to ruin my pride, Sweetheart…”
“No I mean…” she shuffled onto her back and looked at him. “Did we…use…“
Franks eyes went wide. "Oh, erm…”
No, no they hadn’t… fuck, fuck, fuck.
“I mean, come on, surely, we’ll be fine right?” he asked, “I mean, one time…what are the chances of…”
“No, it’s not that I’m worried about.” she shook her head “I’m on the pill…I just..” she trailed of
Frank propped himself up on his elbow as he cottoned on to what she was saying “Are you being serious?” he snorted.
“Well I don’t know where you’ve been!” she shrugged indignantly “well, ok, maybe I know some of where you’ve been, but…”
Frank snorted and shook his head “What do you take me for?”
“An ex ho?” she shot back immediately.
He fell onto his back laughing “If you must know I’ve never had unprotected sex with a one night stand in my life. And the other week I went and got tested, just for you. And I’m clean so…”
“That’s so romantic. ” she grinned at him.
“Well I try.” he raised an eyebrow.
“Still love me?” she quipped and he turned his head to look at her.
“Fraid so.”
“Too bad.” she teased, shuffling over to him “Coz that means you’re stuck with me…”
“Oh no…” he said sarcastically as he turned onto his side, glancing down at her bare breasts “How will I ever cope?”
“Sure you’ll think of a way.” she arched an eyebrow before she suddenly went green. “Oh shit…” she mumbled, before she shot out of the bed and into the bathroom.
Frank listened to her barfing and snorted a laugh before he swung himself out of bed, glad to find his boxers on the floor by his feet. Although where the rest of his clothes where he had no idea. He knocked on the bathroom door.
“You ok?”
He heard the toilet flush and she emerged, wrapped in a robe and looked at him. “I’m never drinking tequila again. Ever.”
Frank had to hand it to his girl, despite her raging hangover she still managed to teach four classes of kids that day, and made it through to nine that evening before she completely crashed on the sofa, falling asleep as the three of them sat in the apartment living room watching The Grinch, Mary’s choice. As the film finished at little after ten, Mary, who was lounging on Frank’s lap looked over to where Fliss lay, her head resting on the other arm of the couch, her feet nestled under his thigh, and nudged Frank.
“I know.” He smiled softly “Leave her be.”
Mary grinned and reached up to run her hand through his beard “you love Fliss.”
He looked at her for a second, eyebrow raised “What makes you say that?”
 “Roberta.” she shrugged.
Frank snorted. “Well, she’s not wrong.”
“Did you tell her yet?” Mary looked at him.
“Yeah.”
“What did she say?”
“That she loves me too.”
Mary grinned “Lissy and Frank, sitting in a tree…”
He rolled his eyes as she chanted off the rest of the ridiculous rhyme and then looked at her. “You finished?”
“Yup.”
“Good, bed time.”
“Awww Frank….”
“No arguments. Bill told me what time you stayed up till last night.”
“Grass.” she narrowed her eyes.
“Yeah, you better believe it. Go on, wash your face, clean your teeth.”
“Shower?”
“Quit stalling Stack you had one when you got back from the stables…”
With a groan she pushed herself off his knee and he stood up as she headed into the bathroom. He pulled a fresh pair of pyjamas out of the clean pile of laundry he needed to sort that was on the chair at the back of the room and lay them on his bed before he moved over and knelt down by Fliss’ head.
“Honey,” he said gently, pushing her hair back off her face, “Lissy…“
She made a noise as she wrinkled her nose, and he smiled as she blinked and looked at him.
“Oh, shit. Sorry…” she yawned as she realised she’d fallen asleep. “What time is it?“
“Not too late.” He smiled “Just about to put Mary to bed. You staying here or…”
“Yeah if that’s okay?”
“Course it is.” he smiled and dropped a kiss to her lips before she sat up running her hand through her hair as she blinked, yawning again.
“Fuck I’m so tired.” She stood up, stretched and then smiled as Mary came back into the room. The girl shot Frank a filthy look and stalked past him into his room. “Ok, wow…”
“She doesn’t want to go to bed.” he shrugged, “moody little madam.”
Fliss laughed as she headed into the bathroom. Frank sat down on the sofa and a little while later, Mary emerged and shot straight for her bed.
“Can I at least read?” she looked at him.
“Ten minutes, tops, whilst I do the dishes…”
She grinned and he turned off the TV and headed into the kitchen, clearing away the remains of their takeaway, stowing the left overs in the fridge for lunch the day after.
In the bathroom Fliss was busy groaning to herself as she realised she’d come on. She knew she was due, but still, this was a pain in the ass. Sorting herself out, she washed her hands and walked into the kitchen. Frank looked up and raised his eyebrow, misinterpreting the look on her face.
“You been sick again?” he asked.
“No… ” She shook her head as she bit her lip. “Look, Frankie, I think I’m go home…”
“Why?” He frowned.
“I errr…” She flushed “I forgot…I…” she trailed off and his frown deepened as her hand moved instinctively to her stomach before a look of realisation crossed his features.
“Oh…” He nodded. “Well, ok, if you’re more comfortable going home then that’s up to you.” He dropped a kiss to her head and she looked at him, confusion flooding her brain.
“You don’t want me to go?”
“Why would I want you to go?” he frowned.
“Because…” she looked at him, unable to voice what she was getting at. Another memory flooded her mind, one of John screaming at her for the sheets being marked, she was jerked back to the here and now as Frank closed the distance between them, tipping her head up to look at him.
“Lissy, talk to me…”
“Sorry, I err…” she rubbed at her head “He used to make me sleep in a separate room.”
“Are you for real?” Frank blurted out, and she could see the anger flooding his system. “Seriously?”
She visibly recoiled a little at his tone and Frank cursed himself as she looked at him, eyes wide as she began to apologise.
“Hey.” He said gently, reaching out to her. “Stop. You’ve nothing to be sorry for I shouldn’t have shouted I just….” He took a deep breath.
“That’s fucked up.”
She looked back up at him, her eyes now had a fierce spark. “You think that’s fucked up? When he was trying to get me pregnant, every month he’d stop me taking pain killers when I came on. Told me it was my own fault for not managing to conceive.”
“Jesus Liss…” Frank shook his head, as she shrugged, her head turning to the side. “Baby…”
“Don’t” she shrugged “I don’t wanna talk about it anymore.”
“Ok.” he nodded. “Look. If you wanna stay then it’s up to you. Whatever you wanna do.”
“I do.” She nodded, smiling softly.
“Good.” He dropped a kiss to her forehead before he moved away from her and reached over, filling the kettle.
“What are you doing?” She asked from behind him.
“Making you a tea.” He shrugged “Used to help Diane…”
“Thanks…” she smiled after a short pause.
“You got everything you need or you need to go the store?”
“I’m good. Ex Girl Scout, always prepared…”
Frank gave a laugh.
“Think I might take another shower though, if that’s…”
“You don’t need to ask.” He looked at her. “You’re my girlfried. I want you to feel like you’re at home when you’re here.”
At that she gave him a soft smile as she moved over and wrapped her arms round his waist, nuzzling into his chest. He gently rubbed at her back, before she leaned up, kissed him and headed out. The kettle boiled and he leaned on the side, dropping his head slightly. What kind of fucked up asshole did that to his own wife? To a wife he was supposed to love and protect no less. It broke his heart to think anyone could be so callous, so mentally and physically abusive to someone so soft, so gentle, so damned amazing….he looked up as he saw her making her way into the bathroom, bag in hand and she smiled at him, shutting the door.
Once he’d made them both a hot drink and grabbed the Advil, he made his way through to his room, placing one mug on the bedside table on the side he slept on and then another on the sill behind Fliss’ side and leaned on the doorframe, looking at Mary. She was still reading.
“Please just the end of this chapter.” she held up the Harry Potter book. Frank took a deep breath, then decided fuck it. She’d fall asleep at some point, there was no school.
“Lights off after that. I’ll be out to check.” he instructed as he dropped a kiss to her head. “Night Stack.”
“Night Frank.”
Back in his room he stripped off, tossing his t-shirt into the hamper before folding his jeans and dropping them on his dresser. He settled on the bed, stretching his legs out as he kicked the duvet down and flicked on the small TV, flipping through the channels looking for something to watch. Grinning when he found an episode of Family Guy, he turned the volume down low and had been watching for about five minutes when he heard Fliss talking to Mary who mentioned something about the book before he heard her bid her good night, and as Fliss opened the door he saw Mary’s light flip off.
He smiled at his girl who had her hair pulled back in a braid and was dressed in a pair of bed shorts and a tight camisole type top, her shoulders bare, long legs stretched as she dropped onto the bed besides him.
“You okay?” he asked, dropping a kiss to her shoulder as she reached round for the drink. She paused as she saw the Advil and then picked it up, smiling at him as she turned to face him.
“Yeah.” she assured him as he kissed the bridge of her nose. She tossed down two pain killers and sipped her drink, her legs bent in front of her as they sat in a comfortable silence, watching the TV, both laughing softly at the show. Eventually she placed the mug down and snuggled closer to him. He reached down for the duvet and pulled it up round their legs as her head lay on his chest, his arm falling round her, fingers lightly brushing down the back of her neck, shoulder and then up again. It was an action he knew she found comforting, and he was proven right as little over fifteen minutes later he looked down to find her fast asleep.
With a soft smile he turned off the TV and gently moved her so that they were both lay flat and she gave a soft hum of contentment and snuggled into him closer. With a yawn he pressed a kiss to her head and closed his eyes.
The rest of the two weeks remaining to Christmas was spent in a whirl of tree-decorating, paper-chain making, shopping and eating more crap than Fliss had thought humanly possible. Steve and his wife Sian arrived on the 22nd and Verity cooked a huge family dinner where Mary was introduced to their twin boys. Frank watched her with interest, they were both her age and he was pleasantly surprised to see she actually seemed to mingle with them quite well. Steve was also noticeably warmer towards him too, which was a relief, and Frank was more than happy to take him out for a beer with Bill one evening whilst the women stayed at home and wrapped presents whilst drinking copious amounts of champagne. A Gallagher tradition Frank was informed, a tradition he eagerly told Bill he could fully get on board with, especially when Fliss had offered to wrap Mary’s presents as well.
By the time Christmas Eve rolled round Frank noticed that Fliss was ridiculously excited and was happy to admit it was because she was looking forward to spending it with him and her family. When Verity had invited him to join them for Christmas dinner he’d been reticent to accept at first, not because he didn’t want to, but because he didn’t want to put her out. When she’d told him she’d be more offended if he refused he’d relented and made the mistake of telling Mary who hadn’t let the subject drop for the last two weeks. Fliss joined them in their traditional Christmas Eve celebration with Roberta, where they exchanged gifts, Roberta made up with the chunky silver bangle Fliss had spotted in a shop and the photo frame which Mary had made one evening with Bill by glue-gunning sea shells onto a plain wooden one she had gotten from Target. Once they were done, they packed Fliss’ jeep up and headed off to the annex. After watching “Elf” in the cinema room with the rest of the family,  wearing her new Christmas Pyjamas (another Gallagher tradition that all the kids in the family got new ones to sleep in on Christmas Eve)  they three of them headed back over to the annex and Mary shot up to bed with no fuss at all, leaving Frank and Fliss to enjoy the rest of their evening which they spent making out like a pair of horny teenagers on the couch until they’d ended up fucking like a pair of horny teenagers on the couch too.
Christmas morning Fliss cracked open an eye and grinned as she sat up, listening to Mary who was calling from the spare room, before she started to sing We Wish You A Merry Christmas, which was punctuated by barks from Thor. Besides her Frank gave a groan and she nudged him.
“Wake up scrooge.”
“Fuck off.” he mumbled.
She laughed and nudged him again before she climbed out of bed, wearing his T-shirt and pulled a pair of denim shorts on “I reckon you got about two minutes before Mary barrels through the door…”
"Fucking Christmas…” Frank scoffed, but Fliss caught the smile on his face as he swung his legs out of bed and stretched, the muscles on his back rippling as he did so. Standing up Fliss watched as he moved, his ass looking pretty damned fine in his boxers as he headed to the bathroom, banging on the spare room door as he did. Fliss heard it fly open and a few minutes later Mary came shooting into her room and bounced on the bed, a half-eaten chocolate Santa in her hand which she had unwrapped from her Stocking. Thor followed, taking up position on the foot of the bed and Fliss hugged Mary, grinning. She loved Christmas, she always had done as a kid. Granted, it hadn’t always been fun with he-who-shall-not-be-named, but the last two since leaving him she’d gotten that childish excitement back, and today was no exception.
“So, I just stand here do I?” Frank asked as he leaned on the doorway, gesturing to the now full bed. Fliss grinned at him and shrugged.
“We’re not staying here.” Mary looked at him “We got presents to open downstairs…”
“Hmmm not sure we do.” Frank teased as he pulled a shirt from his bag in the corner of the room “I mean, does Santa know you’re here and not at the apartment?”
Mary rolled her eyes “I haven’t believed in Santa since I was five, Frank.”
“What?” Fliss looked horrified “I still believe and I’m like thirty three!” Mary gave her a scathing look. Fliss shrugged. “What can I say, I believe in Christmas magic”
“I did…” Mary shrugged “Until he didn’t bring me a puppy.”
“He doesn’t do live animals.” Fliss reasoned.
“Or a piano.”
“Too big to fit on the sleigh.”
“Or an algebra book I wanted.”
“Yeah, why the hell would he bring you maths books?” Fliss snorted “That’s school work.”
“I like it. "she shrugged, before she shoved the rest of her chocolate in her mouth and jumped up, bouncing on the bed. "Come on! Get up!”
Thor looked up giving a huff as Frank told her to stop bouncing. She flopped down and looked at him, folding her arms and Fliss laughed.
“Ok, let’s go!”
The two of them raced down the stairs, Frank following as Mary burst into the living room to see her presents piled by the sofa, and her eyes immediately went to the large wooden box which wasn’t wrapped that had her name painted on the side, and a large painted white pony on the top, resembling Monty. She moved to it and opened it, giving a squeal as she began to pull out the various grooming products that Fliss had bought her to make her own little pony box.  As Mary began to hastily rip the wrapping paper off the rest of the pile of gifts, Frank moved to the tree and pulled out two boxes. One large, one small.
“Merry Christmas baby girl.” he said, dropping a kiss to Fliss mouth. She grinned and sat down on the couch, opening the little box first. Inside was a silver necklace a pendant in the shape of a Daisy which Fliss beamed at.
“I love daisies!” she smiled at him “They remind me of home.”
“I know.” he smiled as she looked at it again before she moved to the next box. This was the one Frank was excited about. They’d cost him a small fortune but, turns out when you don’t spend every Friday night in Ferg’s you actually saved a fair bit of dough. Who knew?
“Oh my God…” she whispered as she cleared the paper away from the contents and glanced down at the tan Cowboy boots. She took a deep breath as she picked one out of the box to examine the detailing on the leather before her eyes widened as she saw her name ‘Lissy’ stitched on the top.
“Do you like them?” he asked softly, although he could tell from her reaction that was a stupid question.
“Frankie…” she looked at him with tears in her eyes, God this man really did listen to every damned word she said.  “I can’t…” she leaned over and gave him a kiss. “Thank you…”
He smiled as she slipped them on and stood up, giving Mary a twirl. There was something about her wearing them along with denim shorts that Frank wasn’t ashamed to admit he found a little arousing.
Frank laughed when he got his presents from Fliss, a new Paul Smith shirt, a Red Sox Cap and a new Samsung Smartphone as she informed him his Nokia had gone out of fashion in 2009. Which was before Mary was born, she pointed out. But it was the gifts they both got from Mary that surprised and reduced them to tears of laughter.
Fliss held up the cowboy hat, grinning from ear to ear as she slipped it on whilst Frank held the white Navy Captain’s hat up and shook his head. “Where on Earth did you get these?” he asked, laughing.
“Bill helped me.” Mary shrugged, looking up from where she was now jamming a pink Ariat baseball cap which she had just unwrapped on her head.
“Remind me to thank him later!” Frank rolled his eyes as Fliss snatched the hat from him and stuck it on his head.
“Mary, get in…” she patted Frank’s knee and Mary hopped up, as Fliss held her phone away from them, snapping a selfie of the three of them. Frank watched her as she smiled, inspecting it and he had to admit it was a pretty good snap. All of them were smiling, all wearing some form of head gear, and for the first time in as long time he realised he was enjoying Christmas morning because HE was having a good time, not just Mary. To him it normally meant a fuck load of expense and the fact another year was rapidly drawing to a close. But he was more than happy to draw a close on 2017. Not simply to shut the door on a mentally draining court fight, but also because he was looking forward to the future. He was starting a new job, would be in the market for a new home and moving through all of those changes with his girl by his side excited him instead of filling him with dread.
As Mary slid off his knee to examine another present he turned to Fliss who grinned, knocking his hat off his head.
“Merry Christmas cowgirl.” he grinned,
She smiled, leaning over to kiss him “Merry Christmas Sailor!”

I don't want to linger any longer
DCU Gen Rating: G Words: 7,523  AO3
In upstate New York there's a very lush, very expensive summer camp that caters to the children of the rich and famous. Bruce and Oliver happen to be those children. And they're less than thrilled to be at this camp.
Alfred was leery of the summer camp. Bruce went to public school partially because of Martha's pointed remarks regarding democracy and public education, partly because of her pointed remarks regarding Thomas's own time at boarding schools and prep schools surrounded by equally rich and entitled boys. Alfred never said anything at the time, it wasn't his place, and would never say anything now but, he whole heartedly believed both. Especially after his own childhood in private schools, even if the times and the British and American systems were very different. Regardless, Bruce was remaining in public school with all the trials it entailed. Including the socializing problem.
He'd always been a quiet, almost shy child but after Martha and Thomas died he retreated far beyond. Even friends from before like Miss Zatara took coaxing and occasionally trickery to get him to interact with. At thirteen and with the beginnings of acne and voice cracks the behavior was partially to be expected. The newfound interest in The Clash was too. Still, Alfred felt strongly that the boy should have the opportunity to at least try and make some friends. So when he overheard some of the women mentioning the summer camp during one of the Wayne Foundation luncheons Bruce insisted they attend "for appearances" (and Alfred was a little worried about the thought process behind that as well but well, one thing at a time) he had to break his normal rule and butt in.
"Pardon me, but what summer camp might this be?" He tried to be as nonobtrusive as possible, it still raised some eyebrows from the women with their pearls and perfect red lipsticks. Their clothes were so immaculate that while he knew they all had nannies, looking at them you never would've even known they had children. Alfred no longer owned a single shirt that wasn't stained somewhere by something, he just hid them well.
The blonde in the most putrid shade of chartreuse he's ever seen recovered first. "Oh! Camp Open Woods. It's in upper state New York, very exclusive but so worth it." Mimi flicked her wrist and half rolled her eyes as though to indicate sending the children she never saw there was the best parenting tip she'd ever taken. Mitzie shifted her hair before continuing, "They've got hiking and horses and like there's a lake." The other women all hum and coo their agreement at how pretty it is, Muffy silenced them with a brow, she was the one who started the story after all. "The kiddos just love it there. Go for a month a time. Would be there year round if they could!" They all nod enthusiastically in agreement.
"Sounds lovely." Which isn't strictly incorrect, but Alfred sincerely doubts these women would actually know whether their children enjoyed the camp or not. "I'll have to look into it, thank you," Alfred excuses himself. He will look into it.
The camp itself does seem the definition of picturesque, with acres of land and woods as well as the lake. The cabins looked to be clean and well maintained. The extensive list of activities alone made Alfred want to go. He reached out to the nannies he'd made friends with over the years, trying to gauge how any of the kids who attended regularly really felt. And the reviews were glowing.
Alfred made an executive decision, the fresh air would be good for Bruce, and called to secure a place for June. Just one month, to test it. Bruce might not be pleased at not having been consulted but Alfred was sure the end results would be well worth it. And if not, it's not like the boy could fire him in revenge. Legal guardianship made that rather tricky.
~
Oliver heard someone stop in the hall outside his room. From where he sat on the floor organizing the old jazz records his mother had given him he couldn't see who it was, the bed was in the way and he didn't really want to move everything just to get up. That seemed like a lot of work. Whoever it was could just come in. Or talk. Whatever. He wasn't moving.
"Are you in here, Oliver?" he finally heard his mother ask, apparently having grown impatient.
"Yes."
"I signed you up for camp. You leave for New York in the morning. It comes very highly recommended, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Chef is making your favorite chicken parmesan as a treat for dinner at six. I will see you then." The sound of her heels were nearly silent as she made her way back down the hall with its plush carpeting.
Taking a minute to process this, Oliver stared at the short shelves in front of him momentarily. Well there went his record organizing, now he was going to have to try and pack.
~
Bruce narrowed his eyes as Alfred slowed to turn the car onto a narrow lane that was barely a break in the trees. A large, wooden arch above it was carved to proclaim it as the entrance to "Camp Open Woods." Somehow, Bruce managed to narrow his eyes even more. Though he suspected it made him look like he was squinting. Especially by the way Alfred pressed his lips into a tight line, an obvious tell that he was trying not to smile.
The lane curved gently through the trees until they opened up to show a field, teenagers and college students in soft blue polo shirts and khaki shorts were scattered throughout it, directing cars in where to park and kids and parents in where to go next. A girl with brightly colored beads on the ends of her tight braids waved at Bruce through the window as they passed. Tentatively, he waved back at the counselor.
Once they were parked, the sleek black sedan settling a little into the grass as they both got out, Bruce immediately slung his backpack on and beat Alfred to the trunk to pull out his bulky footlocker. "Master Bruce," Alfred chided gently, reaching in to help lift the heavy thing, "I do wish you'd let me do that."
"It's fine, Alfred," Bruce protested. Even if the help was appreciated. "Isn't the whole point of this to teach me to be self-sufficient?" Bruce tried to level his steeliest gaze on the man. The unimpressed look he got in return told Bruce he might need to work on that.
Alfred sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose in the process -- and really Bruce didn't think his actions warranted that level of dramatics -- before leveling a flat look at Bruce. "No, Master Bruce. The point of this endeavor is that you enjoy yourself with peers of your own age. Possibly make friends. Build lifelong bonds. Get a nasty sunburn on the first day and minor bear scare on the last."
Bruce frowned and lifted one end of the battered footlocker Alfred had dislodged from the attic the week before. Possibly, it had been Alfred's and come from some hidden corner of the man's room as Bruce had never seen it before even in all his exploring of the manor's nooks and crannies. "Exiting pursued by a bear is not a worthy goal, Alfred," he said dryly.
Lifting the other end of the footlocker the duo began to make their way towards the counselors with carts lined up at the front of the field. "Maybe not for yourself, but personally an exciting and Shakespearean end would be the greatest achievement of my mundane existence."
He snorted, and Alfred wondered where his own penchant for melodrama came from.
"Hiya folks!" The young man next to a cart already loaded with duffels and trunks waved brightly as they approached. "Welcome to camp! Where are you staying?"
Bruce glanced to Alfred and Alfred returned the look, both challenging the other to speak first. If Bruce admitted that he had read and memorized the pre-camp welcome packet then Alfred would see it as a win. If Alfred's patience crumbled before Bruce's then it would vastly undermine the veneer of authority Alfred had managed to paint over their strange relationship. The poor guy standing by the cart was starting to look uncomfortable.
Finally, Bruce broke. He was going to be here for a month, it's not like he'd have to see Alfred be smug during that time. "Pine Ridge," he said flatly.
The counselor visibly sagged in relief. "Ok, great! You're going to toss your gear on that cart up there where Gambit's standing then follow the road to the Health Center to turn in your paperwork and get your head and foot check."
Wrinkling his nose, Bruce nodded. He wasn't really a fan of being touched, even for medical examinations, and was a little glad he got a heads up. He'd briefly forgotten about the fact the packet had said there would be a lice and athlete's foot examination. Not that Bruce had either, which is probably why he'd let it slip his mind. They reached the next cart and a young woman with large sunglasses leant against it. Bruce squinted at the lanyard she had around her neck with an odd badge on the end as a nametag, all the counselors had variations of brightly colored and often glitter coated badges on lanyards. Each as unique as the names on them. Hers had popsicle sticks layered to make a large X and playing cards glued on top so that their back's made a place to write. "Gambit" had been scrawled in looping white paint. With red glitter. Bruce really hoped they weren't going to force him to make a glitter nametag.
"Are you living in Pine Ridge?" She asked, pushing off the cart to stand and raising her clipboard.
"Yes," Bruce said simply.
Gambit nodded. "You can toss your stuff on. What's your name?"
"Bruce. Bruce Wayne."
"Ok, double-o-seven," she smirked, checking off something on her clipboard. "I'm Gambit, head girls counselor for Pine Ridge. But just cause I'm not the one doing bed checks on you doesn't mean I'm not still in charge," she teased. Bruce was fairly certain he heard Alfred snicker. "Anyway, you'll be seeing a lot of me over the next month even though we don't share a latrine. You a first time camper?"
"Yes."
"Well then, welcome Bruce, Bruce Wayne!"
Alfred definitely snickered at that.
"Um, thanks."
She grinned and stuck her pen back behind her ear. "I'll watch your stuff until the grounds guys come and hook the cart up to the ATV to take it up to the cabins. Lucky us, we're on the hill. Nice site, one of my personal favorites actually, but you'll be getting your steps in while you're here. Whole summer or no?"
"Um, just the month." Bruce was starting to get a little overwhelmed in the face of her relentless positivity.
"Rad. Well, I hope you enjoy it! You're gonna want to follow the gravel road trail and head to the health center. I'll see you at dinner."
Bruce nodded and began to walk on, Alfred a step behind him. Once they were out of earshot, Bruce hung back slightly so that they walked next to each other and turned to Alfred. "Do you think everyone's going to be like that?"
"Well Master Bruce, I don't think that children's summer camp counselor is a position that attracts introverts," Alfred replied dryly.
Bruce glared.
"Which isn't to say, however, that every person here would be so enthusiastic."
"Hmm." Bruce didn't say anything else and they made their way to the two-story farmhouse that had a sign hanging from the porch proclaiming it the "Health Center" in silence.
A large group of people were spread out in the grass in front of the porch around a series of low, backless wooden benches. Bruce slowed as they approached, lingering on the gravel. Alfred gripped his shoulder once before gently pushing Bruce forward to step into the grass. Alfred was still a head taller than him, but Bruce was catching up and he couldn't wait for the day he could glare at the man without craning his neck. Alfred looked the picture of cool indifference and collected innocence.
"Excuse me," Alfred called, striding forward and fully expecting Bruce to follow. Which he did, but in silent protest. "Is there a queue?"
"Not really," the teenaged boy Alfred had asked shrugged. "Just give your paperwork to nurse Doc, then pick a spot on a bench and we play monkey."
"Monkey?" Bruce tried to raise an incredulous eyebrow. It was a work in progress.
The older boy's face split into a wide grin. "Yeah! You know," and here he began to howl and jump, scratching at his head in imitation of a monkey.
"Ohmystars, Apollo you're ridiculous!" Another teenager said, her silver painted crescent moon nametag read "Artemis" and the two did look like they could be siblings if not twins. "Theater kids." She rolled her eyes derisively.
Apollo stopped abruptly. "Arty, you're a theater kid."
"Tech kid. There's a difference," she snapped with practiced ease.
"She is correct," Alfred added sagely. Bruce's forehead met his palm as he hung his head.
"Thank you!" Artemis preened. "C'mon, I'll take ya in to Doc." She gestured at them to follow as she turned and headed onto the porch. Having no real other option, Bruce glanced at Alfred before following. Artemis had waited for them, holding open the screen door before shouldering open the second door and leading them into a large room with worn wooden floors and a table with a trio of adults sitting behind it. Some other children and parents stood in front of them and spoke with the adults at the table. Artemis winked and wiggled her fingers in a wave before turning to head back outside. But she stopped short and came to stand next to them again. "Actually, they don't need me out there right now and I'd much rather soak up the AC with you."
Bruce nodded. It was cold in here, especially compared to the muggy afternoon it was shaping up to be. And those polo shirts didn't exactly look comfortable. Neither did the crisp button up and khakis Alfred wore, but Bruce could count on one hands the number of times he'd seen Alfred in shorts or a t-shirt. The group in front of them shifted and Artemis lead them to the table. The burly woman on the end glanced up at them and smiled. Unlike the counselors, her nametag was a pin though she, and the other two adults at the table, still wore the light blue polo shirt. And her nametag also had sequins spelling out "Doc."
"Hey there, you have your paperwork?" she said by way of greeting.
Alfred produced a carefully paperclipped stack from somewhere. Bruce honestly had no clue where. Sometimes Alfred liked to do things like that just to puzzle him. Often times. Bruce was certain he did it routinely just for fun and Bruce's annoyance.
Doc took the stack and looked it over before leaning over to file it in a plastic tub and marking this off on a couple different clipboards. "Alright," she said finally, "you're officially checked in, Mr. Wayne. You still need to be checked over before we can let you run wild. But you're checked in. Welcome to Camp." She smiled broadly and held out a hand, Bruce shook it and managed a small smile in return.
Artemis led them back outside and instructed Bruce to sit, take off his shoes and socks, and wait for Apollo cause she didn't "do feet." Alfred chuckled as Bruce sat, his nose wrinkled, and Artemis took gloved hands and a comb through his hair. Apollo eventually reappeared as she declared him lice free and he poked at and spread Bruce's toes before proclaiming him "good to go!"
As Bruce pulled his socks and sneakers back on --  Alfred refused to buy him hiking boots because they wouldn't be broken in in time and apparently if Bruce was going to be miserable it was going to be his own conscious choice and not due to poor footwear decisions -- Alfred chatted with Apollo about a production of Midsummer that the counselor had done in fall. Finally, Bruce was standing up and slipping his backpack on again.
"Well, I'll let you say bye to your dad and then we'll go find your group," Apollo grinned.
"He's not-" Bruce started but the older boy had already walked away and started talking to one of the other counselors. "Hmph."
Alfred raised a single eyebrow -- Bruce wished he'd just teach him how to do that already -- and gave him a sly smile. "Well Master Bruce."
"Alfred."
They both stood there staring at each other. Finally, Bruce caved and stepped forward to wrap his arms around Alfred. "Bye Alfred," he muttered.
Returning the hug, Alfred replied. "I shall be back at the end of the month. I do sincerely hope that you enjoy yourself, Master Bruce. And I expect letters at least once a week. You should have more than enough stamps for that and if not you have credit at the camp store."
Bruce snorted at that before pulling away. "Thanks, Alfred."
Alfred smiled. "Of course, Master Bruce."
Apollo reappeared then and led Bruce to the edge of the trees and a path there. Bruce looked back once to see Alfred still standing by the benches, waving. Bruce waved back before turning to walk into the woods.
~
Oliver tapped his fingers restlessly on the formica topped table. The other kids all seemed to know each other and once the counselor escorting them to the dining hall left they immediately headed off to meet their friends. Not that he minded, Oliver was used to being alone and could function on his own just fine thanks. But all of these kids would be living with him for the next month at the least. They could at the very least come over and ask him who he was. But apparently, Pine Ridge was the largest unit at camp and so his age group was the biggest if they were staying there. And already there were at least twenty other kids who were all preoccupied and not noticing the blonde kid with a bad haircut.
Tugging at his recently shorn hair, Oliver frowned. He'd been trying to grow it out and it was almost to his shoulders when this morning his mother took him to the barber before putting him on the plane and shipping him off. Supposedly, she thought he'd be too hot with all that hair. Oliver just thought it was a convenient excuse. Oliver respected the trick even if he didn't like it. Especially because he didn't like the end result. His ears were still slightly too big and the cut just emphasized that. No girl would want to go out with a guy with satellite dishes attached to his head. Not that any girl seemed to even want to talk to him right now. Not that anyone at all wanted to talk to him. Maybe if he'd stop glaring at the table? But Oliver didn't really want to be here to begin with.
One of the dinning hall doors opened again and Oliver turned to look. The dorky guy who'd walked Oliver over, and only a dork would name themselves Apollo, and a new kid stood next to him. All dark hair and pale skin that Oliver bet was going to be looking like a lobster by the end of the week. He lingered in the doorway as Apollo said something and turned to leave, scanning the space in front of him. One of the other counselors walked over to meet him, he'd said his name was Sherlock and he was the head boys and Oliver secretly respected him for having the guts to name himself after the world's greatest detective. Sherlock was obviously introducing himself to the boy and Oliver was trying to figure out why the kid looked so dang familiar as his gaze landed on Oliver. And stuck.
That's when it hit him. That kid was Bruce Wayne. His parents talked about him all the time. Mostly, wondering what he would do with Wayne Enterprises once he turned eighteen and could take over and what that would mean for Queen Industries' contracts. Oliver had ever only met the kid once. Right after his parents had died and the whole Queen family had flown out to Gotham to "express their condolences" at the Wayne Foundation's Annual Holiday Party. It wasn't until a couple years later that Oliver realized how awkward the whole thing had been. But that was definitely the same kid, older now but his eyes no less haunted. Oliver blinked and turned away. Bruce Wayne was one kid he'd be happy to leave him alone.
Oliver never did have good luck.
"Oliver Queen?" The kid had come up behind him and without asking, walked around to sit on the bench across from him.
"Yeah?" Oliver winced as his voice cracked at the end. Stupid fraggin luck what the frickety heck stupid stupid puberty.
"I remember you." The kid still hadn't taken off his backpack. They were inside and it's not like someone was gonna steal it. Oliver's own sat on the bench next to him and he barely had anything in it anyway.
"Yeah?" This time his voice didn't crack. Small victory.
"I'm Bruce Wayne."
"Yeah."
The kid's brow crumbled in annoyance and he frowned. "Do you ever say anything else."
Oliver gave his cheekiest grin, oh this was too good. There had never been a more perfect set up. "No."
Impossibly, the kid's look got darker.
Oliver sat and smiled back. The seconds stretch out and Oliver just knew they were each waiting for the other to crack. Bruce continued to glare. Oliver continued to smile.
Finally, his cheeks started to hurt and Oliver took the loss. He was kinda starting to feel like an idiot anyway. "So, this your first summer?"
Bruce relaxed his glare but he still frowned. "I'm just here for a month."
"Didn't answer the question, Brucie."
The frown deepened. "Yes."
Oliver nodded. "Mine too," he admitted. Bruce finally seemed to relax.
"I'm... not sure what we're supposed to do," Bruce admitted, though it looked like struggled to.
Oliver let some of his bravado fall. "Yeah, neither do I. I think we're supposed to have fun, whatever that means."
Bruce's mouth twitched in the direction of a smirk. Oliver took it as a small victory.
"Hi!" A high voice warbled behind Oliver and he turned in surprise.
"Zee?" Bruce sounded just as shocked, though he apparently knew the girl that had just yelled in Oliver's ear. She settled heavily on the bench next to him and Oliver turned to look at her. Long black hair pulled up in a ponytail, bright pink shirt and darker pink shorts, light-up sneakers. She looked younger than him too. Which was confirmed when Bruce said "Aren't you too young to be in this unit?"
The girl rolled her eyes. "I turn eleven in July and I'm here for the summer so."
"That didn't answer the question," Bruce pointed out.
"And the unit is twelve to thirteen," Oliver added, finally recovering from his shock at her sudden appearance.
Pushing out her breath in annoyance, the girl flounced to her feet. "So, I may have heard that you were here and in the dinning hall and convinced my buddy to take a detour on the way to the latrine." She wiggled her arm in the direction of another girl shifting awkwardly by the side door. "We have to sit with our groups at dinner tonight but find me at breakfast tomorrow," she said it like an order and then ran off towards her friend and together they left.
"Alfred," Bruce muttered like a curse.
"Her name's Alfred?" Oliver felt like strange names were just a part of camp life but still.
"Her name's Zatanna." Oh, that was even weirder. "Alfred's my butler."
"Right," Oliver nodded like he understood. He absolutely did not. And Bruce did not seem like he would be explaining.
~
The counselors finally rounded them all up and made them stand in a wide circle, saying that they were going to count off and play get to know you games since one game of like forty people could be fun but maybe was a bit ambitious for first thing. Bruce told Oliver to stay where he stood before wiggling away further down the circle so that there was three people between them. Four groups of ten or so made logical sense and even if Bruce didn't know if he liked Oliver, he at least kind of knew Oliver and would prefer being in a group with at least one person he knew. So Oliver would have to be that person.
They both wound up being number three and Bruce leaned forward slightly to look at Oliver and smirk. The other boy just blinked back at him.
By the time dinner and the opening campfire rolled around, Bruce had come to the conclusion that Oliver wasn't his friend, but he was certainly one of the more tolerable of the other campers. As soon as he'd introduced himself as Bruce Wayne he'd been all anyone else could focus on. Even the kids not from Gotham looked at him with wide eyes. It made Bruce sympathize with the lions at the Gotham Zoo a whole lot more than usual. But Oliver acted like he didn't care. Oliver acted like he didn't care about anything. Just joking and smirking. He gained a gaggle of admirers over the course of the afternoon despite how downright obnoxious Bruce thought he was, but he still didn't seem to care that Bruce was Bruce and that's really all that mattered.
Besides, they apparently were in the same cabin. It just made sense that they hung out together. And if Oliver got sick of Bruce or Bruce got sick of Oliver well lots of kids wanted to ask Bruce all sorts of questions and everyone else seemed to love Oliver.
Even still, they sat next to each other at meals when Zatanna and an everchanging roster of her friends would flock to Bruce. Zee sitting herself down next to him and chattering on about what she'd done in the few hours they were apart. Oliver looked bewildered by the interaction every time. Bruce just nodded along at the appropriate points and asked questions as the fancy struck him. Sometimes he'd ask her stupid questions, like if she was sure the horse she rode that morning couldn't fly so that she would laugh and say she hasn't "learned levitation yet, you dingus!" Oliver's face when that would happen always made Bruce grin.
These meals were the bright spots in Bruce's day. He was... not having a good time. They'd had a swim test first thing Monday morning and Bruce had stupidly forgotten to put on sunscreen, so between swimming laps in the lake while the lifeguards made notes and sitting on the beach he'd very quickly burnt to a crisp. And would have to deal with that for the foreseeable future. Then on Thursday during their hike, Oliver had been behind him and tripped, stumbling into Bruce and pushing them both off the trail. Right into a patch of poison oak. So now Bruce had sunburn and poison oak. To say he was in constant pain was putting it mildly.
Bruce wasn't making friends. He wasn't enjoying the great outdoors. He was just slowly suffering in silence. Especially after Oliver left the screen door open one night and mosquitos had gotten in to use Bruce as their very own all you can eat buffet. So now Bruce was sunburnt, covered in mosquito bites, and still had poison oak.
Doc was really the only bright spot in this hellhole. Her air conditioned domain of the Health Center was quite and comforting. With individual exam rooms that meant Bruce could be completely alone for at least a little while. Which Bruce desperately needed. Being around people all the time was exhausting. And Doc herself had a wry, dry sense of humor that Bruce appreciated and a calm demeanor when Bruce sat and complained about the fact it was all Oliver's fault everything itched twice over. She would just snicker and have Bruce put some slightly odd smelling pink cream on his skin. Then she'd tell him that maybe he should write home about it. Bruce would frown and say "I will."
Alfred didn't seem to care though based on the letters back Bruce received. Or possibly the man was making fun of him. Most likely both. The end of the month really could not come soon enough.
~
Frankly, Oliver had no dang clue why Bruce flippin Wayne decided they were friends. Ok, "friends" was a stretch. But still, the kid spent more time with Oliver than anyone else at camp. Maybe he'd hang out with that Zee girl if she weren't in the younger group, and she did come have meals with them and wander over during all camps, but he didn't even really bother to even attempt to talk to anyone else. Oliver at least tried. If only because he was fairly certain he'd singlehandedly end the Wayne family line if he only talked to Bruce. Besides, the other boys in their cabin weren't terrible. Sure they were a little stuck up and that Brad guy had about the same amount of brain cells as Oliver's old hamster, but they weren't awful people. Which couldn't be said about all their fellow campers. Bruce had pushed one boy off the end of the dock the one morning after he said his third sexist remark in an hour. Oliver had gladly covered for him on that one. Another kid kept picking on two of the girls and Oliver might have possibly sort of filled his bag with rocks and as many spiders as he could find when he wasn't looking. He thinks Bruce saw him do it, but he never said anything once the kid got tired of carrying it and opened his backpack then immediately started screaming.
Neither incident had necessarily endeared Bruce to Oliver though. Especially since the kid had somehow managed to tip their canoe while they were in the middle of the lake. So they both floated there buoyed by their life vests spluttering water and trying to right the stupid canoe while screaming at each other and kicking madly. In the cold lake. They never did manage to flip the boat and the counselors had to come with the little motorboat to fish them out of the water. They were still glaring at each other after Sherlock had taken them to get showered and fresh clothes. He let Bruce mess around with his nametag as he ran their wet, smelly stuff into the Health Center and throw it in the washer that was supposedly there. Oliver was still pissed though so he ripped the plastic magnifying glass out of the other boy's hand. Sherlock's name was just a label stuck onto the handle so you could still use it. Which Oliver immediately did in an attempt to burn Bruce's shoelaces.
Which is about when Sherlock came back. "Hey! Oliver! Cut that out! Seriously dude, what're you doing? And Bruce, you were just gonna let him light your shoes on fire?"
Bruce shrugged. "I have other pairs. And I did dump him in the lake."
Oliver handed the nametag back and nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, he's the one who thought he saw a frog and tipped the thing."
"A fish, not a frog."
"Whatever."
"And you gave me poison oak."
Oliver frowned and scratched at some of his own poison oak. "That was not intentional and I have it too."
Sherlock looked between them. "Right. You two are supposed to see Doc soon anyway, wanna go in now?" They both nod and that was the end of that. For then at least. That night Oliver got up to go use the latrine and forgot to close the screen door again. All five boys in the cabin wound up eaten alive and never mind the fact Oliver was just as itchy, Bruce acted as though he'd planned it just to mess with him.
Still didn't excuse the fact that the jerk got them lost and banned from the stables on the following Monday. Oliver liked the stables. He thought the horses were cool and they seemed to like him. He'd tried to schedule as much riding time as they'd let him after the initial group session. Bruce just so happened to have scheduled some on Monday morning too it would seem. And they both were the same ability level. Great. But they were doing a trail ride, going single file through the woods at the edge of camp, didn't leave a whole lot of room for talking and Oliver was more than ok with that. He wound up behind Bruce at the very back of the group and took it at a leisurely pace which Pancake didn't seem to mind. So long as Oliver stayed behind Bruce he just zoned out. Taking in the forest with its sounds and smells, the warm horse that swayed gently as she walked making him sway too. Oliver should've been paying more attention. Because Bruce decided to take his horse on a bit of an adventure. The two were wandering through the woods for an hour before Oliver realized that Bruce had hijacked a horse and gotten them lost. Another two before anyone found them. They'd completely missed lunch. And they were banned from horseback riding.
Not that Bruce cared, he was only here another two weeks.
Oliver had two whole months.
It's not like his father recognized he ever existed half the time, but his mom sending him off to the other side of the country was a bit much. He'd thought they had an understanding. Apparently not. And now he wouldn't even get to ride the horses.
Which Oliver naturally thought was overkill for himself but it was totally punishment for Pancake too. They had bonded. Not that the riding staff seemed to care when he tried to plead his case. Knox looked a little sympathetic at least. And she called after him when he'd turned to walk back over to Brad and maybe go play volleyball or something. "Oliver!" Knox said again and he paused. "I'll talk to Bambi and see about a probationary period or something. Maybe clean some stables or just make it a two week ban since you're here all summer. Kay?"
Oliver grinned. "Thanks." She returned the smile before turning to go back to mucking stalls and cleaning the tack.
~
Archery, Bruce decided, was the worst. It slapped his reddened and itchy skin even with the arm guard on. The smaller bows they had were too easy for him to pull and sent the arrows almost skittering at the target when he released. The bigger ones and the compound bows were too heavy a draw though and Bruce's twiggy thirteen year old arms just didn't have the strength. Oliver didn't seem to like it either. He seemed like the type of guy who had everything handed to him and most of the sports came naturally to him. Archery didn't. It clearly frustrated him that while he managed to hit the target he couldn't hit the center. Or even the yellow rings just outside it. He managed to pepper the blue ones every time. He could at least use the larger recurve bows at least. Which Bruce wouldn't admit to but was supremely jealous of.
"You just gotta practice, you'll get there!" Legolas reassured him. Bruce and Oliver both raised skeptical brows at that. Legolas had gotten his name because he was a crack shot. Hitting the bullseye just about every time. His encouragement wasn't as meaningful as he meant it. Especially when there was a rumor going around that the other counselors had dared him to shoot an arrow off of someone's head while blindfolded. And that he had managed it. "Though not today," he laughed after checking his watch, "we need to clean up for lunch."
The boys and other campers all turned their bows in and Legolas set them in the shed before returning and sending them to collect their arrows. By the time they were all cleaned up a couple other counselors had wandered out of the woods where they must've gone for a hike on their breaks and decided to head with them to lunch. A week and a half of camp had all the kids falling into a buddy line without even being told and Oliver fell in next to Bruce out of habit. Beaker made them do a headcount, checking each camper off on her list, and let Legolas lead them off toward the dining hall. He also started to lead them in some insipid song about a worm getting stuck in a straw. Legolas would shout a line and around Bruce all the other kids would eagerly shout it back. Even Oliver. Bruce would rather actually swallow a worm.
Inside the dining hall was the usual premeal chaos as counselors took their assigned tables and yelled across the room to each other. Kids swarmed around trying to find seats next to friends or at tables with specific counselors. Bruce scanned the space when a small arm covered in bright string bracelets -- and there hadn't been that many at breakfast, Bruce was certain -- shot up and waved towards him enthusiastically. "BRUCE!" Zatanna bellowed. He was fairly certain she'd pushed her magic into it because he could clearly hear it over everything else. That, or Zatanna was just disturbingly loud.
Bruce began walking to the table she was at and the two seats she appeared to be guarding with her life. Oliver followed and Bruce couldn't explain why. Well at least not beyond the fact that it was just what they did anymore.
"Hey kid," Oliver said by way of greeting. Zatanna preened and smiled. She was a ten-year-old queen and this table was her court. Just no one beyond the three of them knew that just yet.
"Hi Ollie. Oh! I want you guys to meet Hartley! He lives in the cabin two over from mine. He really likes music," Zatanna told them breathlessly, pointing at the small redhead next to her. Bruce and Oliver both sat down across from the two as more kids took the spots further down the table. Oliver waved at the boy while Bruce just nodded. "That's Oliver and that's Bruce, he's my best friend," Zatanna told Hartley and pointed at the two older boys.
Bruce frowned at Zatanna and was glad to see the boy looked skeptical when he glanced between Bruce and Zee. "Isn't he a little old to be your best friend?" he asked a little too loudly.
"Yes." Bruce said. "And we're not best friends."
Zee pouted. "Well until Oliver I was your only friend."
"We're not friends," Bruce and Oliver corrected her at the same time.
"Sure," she said with an eyeroll.
The poor boy she'd dragged into this looked so confused. "So, how old are you?" he finally dredged up the courage to ask.
"Thirteen," Oliver sounded smug. Bruce just nodded.
"Oh." Hartley seemed to shrink in on himself.
"How old are you?" Zee asked, genuinely curious.
"Eight." He was still a little too loud when he spoke, even though he seemed like he was shy.
Bruce raised an eyebrow. He'd been practicing and he knew it wasn't as smooth as Alfred's but Oliver provided infinite possibilities to practice and it was still leaps and bounds better than a week ago. "Aren't you in the nine to eleven group?" he asked Zatanna.
"Yeah," she frowned. "Hartley, how'd you wind up in my group?"
He shrugged. "I skipped a grade and my mom kinda bullied them into putting me in by grade instead of age."
Oliver seemed to hum in understanding. Bruce just felt himself frown. Zatanna met his eye with a slight frown of her own. The moment passed though when one of the counselors started the quiet clap and everyone shut up and turned to pay attention.
~
Oliver was officially tired of camp by the last week of June. A racoon had gotten into their cabin the day before and went though literally all of their things. It didn't eat or destroy anything though, just wanted to make chaos by rubbing its tiny hands on everything apparently. Sherlock had to make another laundry run for them. Gambit had heard about it over the radio and claimed a golf cart just so she could come laugh at the mess before they managed to clean too much of it up, having been off on her break at the time. She left the cart for Sherlock before heading to her own cabin for the rest of her break, laughing the whole way. The other counselors in the unit made a fire for the boys while everyone else got ready for bed and they waited for their sheets and sleeping bags to be washed.
Unfortunately, Oliver had a whole two more months to go. He was officially less than pleased with his mother for this grand idea.
Luckily, Knox found him before the Final Campfire for those who were only there for the month. Taking long strides up the wide stone steps of the amphitheater to where he sat next to Bruce. Zatanna and her little friend Hartley on Bruce's other side. They all watched as the barn staffer made her way towards them, standing out in her jeans and tall muck boots while everyone else was wearing shorts. "Hey, Ollie!" she called as she approached, obviously not realizing that she already had everyone's full attention. "I just got back from the barn and I wanted to be the first to tell you that your ban has been lifted! You're allowed to come back starting Monday, since Bruce is leaving." Here she grimaced over at Bruce. "Sorry, but Bambi kind of decided you were the responsible party and Ollie just collateral damage. Very foolish collateral damage." She didn't bother to apologize for that one though as she turned to look back to him. "So Pancake will see you Monday? She's missed you."
Oliver nodded eagerly. "Yes. Absolutely. I'll talk to Sherlock about changing my schedule right after the campfire."
Knox nodded. "Sweet. Ok, I need to hit the showers. Bye all! I'll see you at breakfast tomorrow!"
They all said their goodbyes and Oliver couldn't stop smiling. Camp still sucked and the one person who made it interesting at least was leaving tomorrow, but at least Oliver's ban had been lifted. He could spend the rest of summer riding horses.
~
Bruce thought that he'd never been happier to see Alfred in his life. The man stood on the porch of the Health Center, talking with Doc when Artemis came to collect him from the dining hall where he'd been sitting on the steps, avoiding singing camp songs. The irony of Apollo taking him to the dining hall at the beginning of the month and Artemis leading him from it at the end was not lost on Bruce. Nor was it lost on Alfred by the sly grin he had when he saw who walked with Bruce. "Have a safe trip home!" Artemis said brightly before heading to Bugs, the camp director, and getting the name of the next camper she was to fetch.
"Well Bruce, I'm sorry that the circumstances weren't better but I'm glad I got to know you," she said and held out a hand that Bruce shook. "Maybe I'll see you next year? And if not, keep in touch. Mr. Pennyworth has my mailing address, maybe you can write me some of your famous letters."
Bruce smirked. "I will."
Doc laughed and the corners of Alfred's mouth twitched. "Shall we, Master Wayne?" he asked. "Your footlocker has already been loaded and you have officially been checked out."
Nodding, Bruce eagerly turned to go search the field for the car. He thought to look back once and wave to Doc, but then he was off and moving. He closed the door hard after he climbed in. Alfred started the car but didn't shift into gear. They just sat there in silence as the vents slowly began to push out cold air.
Finally, Alfred asked what he wanted to. "How was camp?"
"Never again, Alfred. Never. Again."
"That bad?"
"Didn't you get my letters?"
Alfred finally pulled out of the field and started down the long drive towards the road. "I did. I had just assumed that you were exaggerating as is your penchant."
Bruce glared at him. "You were talking to Doc."
"And I realized that you were not exaggerating."
"Never. Again."
"Yes, Master Bruce."

Single Parent AU Headcanons (FFXV)
Pairing: Noctis x Reader/Prompto x Reader/Ignis x Reader/Gladio x Reader
Warnings: abandonment, alludes to depression
A/N: here’s another set of headcanons for the FFXV boys, I wanted to try something new so I made headcanons for each character! I know single parent/guardianship can be a sensitive subject for some, so just a fair warning that these rely on abandonment. I made it as gender neutral as possible (but this is my first time, please let me know how I can improve). As always, feedback is appreciated!
You've been a single parent for quite some time now, your child being seven years old and your significant other walking out seven years ago. Adjusting to this new milestone was extremely hard, especially since you juggled child care on top of your job and possibly any schooling. It wasn't until you met him that you finally caught a break from your overwhelming life.
Tumblr media
Noctis Lucis Caelum
Wasn't a big fan of kids
He didn't mind them, but he didn't think he wanted some of his own
He preferred pets over children
His father convinced him to take some time off from work to go fishing, since he enjoyed it so much
There, he met you and your child, where you were struggling to teach them how to fish for "life experience"
He noticed that you were beginning to grow frustrated with it and stepped in (mostly because you looked like your veins were about to pop)
As you got to know each other and spent more time together, Noctis got closer with you and your child
Eventually, you two started dating, which your child was absolutely thrilled about
Finally, you were able to focus on work a little more, and the memory of your significant other walking out didn't bother you as much
You felt yourself beginning to heal, and you could tell your child was much happier too
Noctis spoiled them to no end
He ended up growing a soft spot for children
They often spent time together in parks or in the city, shopping and talking about the most random of things
(Shopping meant Noctis buying anything that your child stared at for longer than three seconds)
Eventually, when you two get engaged and married, Noctis becomes the legal guardian of your child
The three of you become a happy family together (Noctis possibly hinting at maybe a fourth member joining soon)
Tumblr media
Prompto Argentum
Prompto definitely liked kids, and was leaning towards the idea of having his own one day
His job is taking baby pictures and school pictures
Unfortunately, your child ended up getting sick during school picture day, so you had to schedule to meet with Prompto elsewhere to take pictures
After you two meet, he basically falls in love at first sight
He's caring and kind to your child, and he enjoys taking care of them while you're out working
Partakes in the "bring your child to work day" events
When you two finally start dating, your child is excited to spend even more time with you and Prompto
After every date, your child would ask the same question with a silly grin on their face: "Did ya kiss?"
Without fail, Prompto's cheeks would turn red every time
You could tell your child was picking up some of Prompto's habits and traits, which meant that they were happy to have Prompto in your family
Eventually, you and Prompto get married, and more than likely have your own child, as well as adopting another
Your family is big, but full of love
Tumblr media
Ignis Scientia
Ignis was fond of children, but never had any thoughts of having children of his own
He was a second grade school teacher, specifically the teacher of your child
You met a few times for mandatory parent/teacher conferences
Without fail, Ignis complimented your child for its academic abilities and good behavior
One time, he messes up and brings up the child's other parent (asking about what they do for a living)
You explain to him the circumstances and he immediately apologizes
After this, Ignis notices the way your child clings to him like a father
After enough heartstrings were pulled, Ignis finally grows closer to your family, knowing that you've been going through a rough time
Finally, the two of you start dating
Your child is skeptical at first, not sure whether this was bragging rights to their classmate, or weird that their teacher and mom were dating
It took a couple more dates and a lot more time spent together for them to realize that this was perfect
Eventually, when your child was past second grade, Ignis continued to help them study and teach them at home, which definitely helped their school career
When the two of you got married, your child was beyond happy and proud
They eventually stopped associating Ignis as their second grade teacher, and more of their father
The three of you were perfect in his eyes, he felt no need to expand the family
Tumblr media
Gladiolus Amicitia
Gladio enjoyed the thought of having his own kids one day, but much further down the line
He was a coach (baseball, soccer, basketball, etc.) at the school your child went to
When your child decided to try out for sport, that's when you met him.
The first day of tryouts, Gladio noticed you were the only single parent out of everyone else
He pitied you, finding it unfortunate that you had gone through that
He caught you after several practices to speak with you, mostly small talk and catch-up
Your child noticed the favoritism and formed a sly plan to get the two of you together
Eventually, when you both started dating, your child was proud and said that it was definitely their idea
Gladio spent a lot of time practicing with just your child
They played a lot together while you watched in amusement
The closer each of you got, the more time you spent together
When it was time for your child to move on from elementary sports, Gladio was sad
It's not like he couldn't help your child with sports anymore, but the bonding time they had at practices will be missed
Eventually, you and Gladio got married
Your child was still proud and believed this was all because of them
Gladio was happy to have your child, but the two of you ended up having two more kids along with them, making you both a big happy family

Also, I don’t know why I’ve never mentioned it before, but a huge song inspiration for the title of this fic (and some chapter titles) is Realize by Colbie Caillat.
Thank you so much to everyone who read, reblogged, replied, allofthethings, for this fic! I’m very proud of it and have loved writing and sharing this story with you. Your support means the world! Keep your eyes open for a new series announcement coming Sunday! ;)
Series Masterlist
Tumblr media
Y/N —
Well, here’s a letter I never dreamed of writing. Having Milena, though, it’s changed everything. I look at my previous little girl and I want to give her the world. I’ve brought her into a scary world, and without a father to boot. I know, though, that she will have no shortage of family, love, and opportunities.
Thank God for my brother. Sebastian is a good man. I’m a better person for being his little sister. Being a mama on my own seems so much more possible with my family, especially him. I know that my baby girl will always have that father-figure in her life with him around. Can you just imagine him walking her down the aisle one day? She’s such a tiny thing now, but I can picture it perfectly in my head.
Part of protecting my daughter is making sure she is taken care of in the event that something happens to me. No shortage of family and love means there will be no shortage of people taking care of her, but I want it to be Sebastian. He’s going to think I’m crazy. My parents might not even understand. But I know, with every fiber of my being, that he is the best option to raise her if I’m not around. I can’t explain it beyond that — I just know. He will get her through my absence, get her through the toughest times in life. He will give her all of the love in the world.
Which is why I’m writing you. I’m honestly not sure who will have a harder time if something happens to me, Milena or Seb. You’re his best friend, and I can only pray that the two of you maintain that friendship — not for the benefit of this potential situation, but for his sake and yours. I can tell you now that I secretly hope the two of you will see the love you have for each other and let that come to fruition. Either way, Y/N, you have to be the one to guide him through all of this. He will be grieving, may not know the ins and outs of parenting, especially of parenting a little girl … have to admit, I’m laughing to myself thinking about him trying to do her hair or pick out outfits for her. He’ll figure it out, on his own or not, but I know the best choice for my brother, in so many ways, is you.
I’m having all of the legal documents sent to you, as well. You’ll be in a better place to handle all of this and make sense of it to Sebastian. He’ll handle my parents, but only if he’s in a good place. Help him find that good place. Please.
Whatever happens with the two of you … take care of each other. Take care of my little girl. Take care of Mom and Dad. I’ll be watching out for you.
— Irina
Philip set the letter to the side. Y/N had read it aloud to Sebastian when she first opened it, and they had read it countless times together, but hearing Philip read it aloud with all four of the grandparents present made the emotion new and raw. Even Tim and Anthony were brought to tears by the words. After a box of tissues was passed around, Philip continued.
“The legal documents sent have all been endorsed — they’re legitimate. I spoke with the lawyer Irina had draw everything up and put in charge of sending the letter and the papers out. News of her death didn’t reach him quite the way it was supposed to, which delayed everything being mailed, and then they sat in Los Angeles for a while, of course. She’s included copies of everything we need: Conor’s rights being signed away, copies of the emails they exchanged leading up to that, a last will and testament appointing complete guardianship to both Sebastian and Y/N. I know we want to avoid a hearing, so I’ll present these to the court, and we’ll go from there. I don’t see, though, with all of this, how anyone could give Conor any part in custody of Milena, including visitations.”
Alice sniffled. “We have told Conor that we won’t take part in his case. We love our son, but he has to face the consequences of his initial decision.”
Sebastian nodded his gratitude. “We’d like to make sure all of the grandparents are included on visitations in the final papers, but Y/N and I want to adopt her. We want to make her officially ours.”
“And everyone is in support of that?” Philip asked.
All four grandparents nodded their agreement, with enthusiasm and without hesitation. Philip explained the process going forward, promised to do his best to keep it out of the courtroom, and sent them on their way.
Tumblr media
The remaining days that Milena was with Conor, Y/N and Sebastian worked to put the final details of her birthday party together. They visited the breeder and put a deposit on a puppy they could pick up on Milena’s birthday to surprise her with at her party. Y/N washed her bedding and found a couple more things to decorate with, and Sebastian worked on putting together the swings they had invested in but hadn’t gotten to setting up yet.
After that, there was nothing left to do but wait. With thirty-six hours to go, they decided it was okay to go out for a date night. They hadn’t been able to since they had opened up about their feelings and decided to make a real go of things, so they took the opportunity and went to dinner and a movie.
“I had a good time tonight,” Y/N said, leaning on his shoulder while they waited for the movie to start.
Sebastian smiled and kissed her forehead. “We’re only halfway through the evening, Bright Eyes.”
She shrugged. “I know, but I’m with you. That’s all I need.”
“Me too,” he agreed, hooking a finger under her chin to bring her lips to his as the lights in the theater began to dim.

By the time Milena’s birthday came around, life had fallen into a pleasant routine. The adoption wouldn’t be final for a couple of months, but that was more to do with court timelines than anything; one week with a little girl processing her mother’s death and a lot of other changes in a short time had been enough for Conor to know that parenting was not something he could handle. He dropped his end of the custody battle a couple of days later, allowing the family to move forward with their lives unhindered.
Milena’s night terrors continued, but were becoming less and less frequent. She was still seeing the psychologist once a week, and that seemed to be helping. She had even had an overnight with Georgeta and Anthony without any mishaps.
Sebastian left around lunchtime to go pick up Milena’s puppy, leaving the girls home to put the finishing touches on party decorations and make sure everything else was in order. Milena was in her birthday outfit, her hair was secured in a cute, curly ponytail, and she was jumping around like she’d already eaten an entire pan of cupcakes.
“Is it time yet, tanti?” she asked Y/N for the millionth time that day. [Tanti = Auntie]
Y/N chuckled and scooped Milena up in her arms. “Not yet, princess. Very soon, though.”
Milena groaned. “Can I call Gramma Alice and Bunica and ask when they’re coming?”
“You can call Gramma and Grampa,” Y/N offered, dialing the number and putting it on speaker before handing the phone to the now-three-year-old.
Thirty minutes later, all of the grandparents had arrived. They grinned at the little girl dancing around and showing them everything that was set up for the party. While Milena was kept busy, Y/N checked her watch and realized Sebastian should have been back by now. Frowning, she found her phone and stepped outside to call him.
“I’m just pulling up to the house, babe,” he answered.
She looked up and spotted him, so she smiled and waved. She waited there, anxious to get her hands on that puppy.
“Two puppies?” she exclaimed when Sebastian approached with a puppy in each hand. He carefully handed her a black and tan one, its little tail wagging faster than a hummingbird’s wings.
Sebastian kissed her hello, then stepped back. “I saw how you were eyeing that one when we put the down payment on Milena’s puppy. No reason both of my girls shouldn’t have a puppy.”
Y/N held the little creature close, tears welling in her eyes. “She’s so precious!”
“Why are you crying?” Sebastian chuckled, pulling her to his chest and kissing her again. “I didn’t know you’d be this excited!”
“I am excited,” she sniffled, “but it could also be the baby.”
Sebastian nodded, then his eyes went wide. “Baby?”
Y/N giggled through her tears. “I was gonna wait to tell you — found out at my doctor’s appointment the other day. I wasn’t expecting it at all, since it was just a yearly check-up, but since you and I haven’t been preventing anything, they wanted a test and it came back positive. I was going to wait to get through the party before I told you …”
Sebastian set down the puppy that was in his arms and grabbed up his wife, tears flooding his own eyes now. “I can’t believe this — I can’t … I can’t form words.”
Y/N grinned and wrapped her free arm around his neck. “You don’t think it’s too soon?”
He shook his head, taking her face in his hands. “From the moment I realized how long I’ve been in love with you, I knew we had a lot of time to make up for. I’d say we’re right on track.”
“Me too,” she grinned. “Let’s not tell everyone yet though, okay? One shock at a time.”
Sebastian nodded his agreement and looked around for the puppy he had set down. He was just corralling the little thing when Milena came out to the porch and saw what her Uncle Seb had brought home.
“Puppies!” she squealed clapping her hands and running toward Sebastian. “Can we keep them?”
“This one is yours,” Sebastian told her, handing the puppy over and guiding her on how to hold it safely. “Happy birthday, munchkin!”
“Thank you!” Milena said before peppering the puppy with kisses and then asking if she could go inside and show her grandparents.
Y/N opened the door with her free hand. “Let’s go!”
Sebastian took the door from her, allowing both girls to go in and show off their new pets. He stood back and let them have their moment. Watching his parents, his wife, his niece, and Alice and Tim, Sebastian felt a moment of sadness. His sister should have been here for all of this. He would always miss her, but the pain of it was still too fresh.
Seeing that Sebastian’s smile had fallen some, Y/N stepped in front of him and wrapped her arms around his middle. He hugged her back.
“She’s watching over us,” Y/N reminded him. “She said so herself.”
He leaned to kiss her. He knew that Y/N was right — after all, he was married to his best friend, would be able to raise his niece the way his sister would have wanted, and had a baby on the way. Without his sister watching over them, he wasn’t so sure all of this wouldn’t have passed him by.
“She did,” Sebastian grinned, “and I’d say today is perfect proof of that.”

Overview: I first learned of Vanessa Riley while reading an article about women of color and historical romance, so when I finished a rather confusing (and depressing?) read, I decided to see which of Riley’s books my library had on offer. This novel originally caught my eye because of the marketing: a multi-cultural regency romance? Seems like just the thing I’m looking for! Unfortunately, the writing style just didn’t gel with me, so for that reason, I can’t give this book more than 2 stars.
Writing: While I can respect the easy-to-digest prose style of most romances, Riley’s style didn’t work for me for a number of reasons. First, I found the use of the first person jarring. If you know me, then you’ll know that first person narration feels unnatural to me (unless the book is self-conscious about the way perspective is being used). But I also found the first person strange because Riley’s book alternates between Patience’s POV (which is in first person) and Busick’s POV (which is in third person). While the shift in POV was a nice delineation between the two characters’ perspectives, I ultimately had some trouble losing myself in the story because there was such a marked shift. I found myself preferring Busick’s chapters over Patience’s because I found it easier to let the prose just kind of wash over me.
Riley’s prose style is also a bit too reliant on dialogue and rhetorical questions for my taste. A large portion of this book involves characters talking to one another, which would be fine except I felt like Riley used dialogue in order to tell readers things rather than show them. The dialogue would repeat certain ideas or events over and over again, and the flow of the conversations didn’t feel natural, as topics would change abruptly or characters would speak in ways that didn’t feel genuine. I did like moments when Patience and Busick would have a little tit-for-tat; Riley is strongest when writing Patience's witty comebacks to Busick’s insistence on military order.
But because there was so much dialogue, there wasn’t much room for anything else, and I felt like Riley wasn’t quite sure of how to create suspense without dialogue. As a result, there are a lot of rhetorical questions; “Was she a spy?” “Did he have some secret in his past?” and the like. I feel like these types of questions popped up every other page, and part of the reason they were relied on so much may have been because Riley had a tendency to tell rather than show. Riley would point blank tell us what her characters were thinking or feeling, as well as what actions they were taking, and as a result, the narrative (and characters) felt flat.
Structurally, I also think the book could have used some tweaking. Early on, I felt like Riley was using a lot of expositional dialogue to dump a lot of info on the reader, and Patience’s internal monologue would make allusions to characters or events in ways that felt awkward and/or not relevant in the moment. I even had some trouble determining what exactly was going on at first because the book starts out with an exciting scene, and the circumstances that created that scene were unclear (unless you read the book summary first). To help with this, it would have been beneficial to get some kind of prologue, and if Riley didn’t want a prologue that depicts Patience being separated from her son or being victimized by the antagonist, then maybe we can see her escaping Bedlam or joining the Widow’s Grace - anything to give the book the space to establish a setting.
Plot: This book primarily follows our heroine, Patience Jordan, as she tries to regain custody of her son, Lionel. Following her husband, Colin’s, suicide, his uncle Markham seized control of their estate at Hamlin and claimed guardianship over Lionel. The reason? To gain access to Patience’s father’s money. To cover up the truth, Markham had Patience committed to Bedlam, so now, Patience must find evidence that Markham fabricated this insidious plot - evidence that she thinks is contained in some legal documents hidden within the family home.
However, Lionel’s legal guardian is not Markham, but Busick Strathmore, Colin’s cousin. Wanting to do right by his family, Busick seizes control of Hamlin and establishes himself as Lionel’s adoptive father. Not sure if Busick can be trusted, Patience gets herself hired as a wet nurse for Lionel, and uses her knowledge of the house to look for the legal documents that will prove Markham’s guilt, thus preventing her from being separated from Lionel again.
On paper, this plot looked really intriguing, but in practice, not a whole lot happened. Most of our time is spent reading the dialogue between Patience and various other characters, and we don’t actually get to see much of her snooping around, risking getting caught, and so on. Events didn’t seem to build on one another, so I mostly felt like I was getting character snapshots rather than an actual narrative.
There’s also something of a side plot where a mysterious “ghost” causes some minor trouble around the house. Personally, I think this plot could have been more centralized; if Riley had gone full Gothic romance (I’m thinking Jane Eyre because Jane gets hired to care for a child and Thornfield is spooky), I think this book would have been a delight. But the existing tone is a little too light, so it didn’t quite achieve the desired effect.
I also think that the whole Widow’s Grace stuff removed a lot of agency from Patience. While I liked that Patience had friends - especially friends in high places that could wield social influence to help her - having an organized, underground band of women was a little much for me. I would have preferred to see Patience concoct plans and discover information on her own, rather than having the Widow’s Grace act as the architect.
Characters: Patience, our heroine, is fairly likeable in that she’s brave, determined, and fiercely loyal to the people she cares about. I really enjoyed following her as she tried to search for her legal papers, outsmart Busick, and bring her companions along for the ride. I also liked that she had a lot of complex emotions surrounding her husband’s death; while the marriage wasn’t happy (and she has a lot of feelings about being treated as an Other), she also feels guilty about potentially contributing to her husband’s depression and wonders what she is going to tell her son about his father. I liked seeing her try to work through all these emotions, all while remaining focused on her goals.
Busick, our hero, is also fairly complex, but my appreciation for his complexity is dampened by some of the cheesiness that surrounds his military outlook on life. Busick is a former soldier who is working through his feelings about being injured in battle. Two years before the story begins, Busick loses his leg and must either use a prosthetic or a wheelchair, and he has a lot of issues with the perceptions surrounding his disability. As a result, he tries to hide the fact that he’s missing a leg; he never uses his wheelchair (except when alone) and plays it off like his leg just isn’t healing right. This kind of internalized ableism could have been really interesting to read about, especially since there was an opportunity for Busick to learn more about his value as something other than a soldier. However, Busick’s desperate desire to be useful to the war effort came off as fairly ridiculous; not only does he bring soldiers into his home and conduct drills in his yard (wouldn’t that be done at a camp or base?) but he tries to put Lionel on a strict military-style schedule and requires people to witness him as he rides a horse around the lawn (to prove his strength?). His past as a notorious rake isn’t really utilized effectively either; while we get allusions to his amorous activities, I didn’t really see how it was relevant. Did the military give him more discipline and now he’s reformed? Does he find himself slipping back into his old ways now that he can no longer fight on the battlefield? How does this situation with Patience and Lionel challenge all that? I think I would have liked to see Busick grow a little more, maybe by having him use his guardianship of Hamlin and Lionel as a way to “prove” that he’s changed from rake to responsible, disciplined adult (and his disability threatens that by making him seem incapable, so he has to deal with that as well). And while there were some hints at those kinds of things, they really weren’t central to his story.
Side characters were fairly enjoyable in that they had sweet relationships with the heroine or hero. I particularly enjoyed the relationship Patience had with Jemina - her fellow inmate at Bedlam who suffers from amnesia. I appreciated that Riley didn’t make Jemina seem “crazy,” but instead, she was a capable woman who demonstrates genuine affection and concern for her friend. I also liked that Busick had a similar support in Gantry, a viscount who is helping Busick with Hamlin (and with self-acceptance?) while also struggling with his own family issues. Lady Shrewsbury, the head of the Widow’s Grace, was interesting for the role she played in using her social power to get Patience into Hamlin, but otherwise, I didn’t really like the idea of the Widow’s Grace (because it removes some agency that could have been given to Patience instead).
Markham, our antagonist, is barely present, so I don’t really have many thoughts on him. While his actions were sneaky and abhorrent, and I appreciated that Riley didn’t use him to showcase a bunch of on-page misery, I also thought he was underutilized.
Romance: I hate to say it, but I think Patience and Busick lacked chemistry. I couldn’t quite see how each character enriched each other’s emotional lives; Patience seemed to like Busick because he was fatherly towards Lionel and because he was kind, while Busick seemed to like Patience because she was pretty and defiant. I wish Riley had done a little more to make them feel made for one another; maybe Patience challenges Busick’s rigid outlook on life and shows him that he has value beyond just being a soldier. Maybe Busick shows Patience that she matters as a person - something that was lacking in her marriage to Colin - or that she doesn’t have to take on all her burdens herself. There were hints of some of these things, but because of the writing style, I thought we were told rather than shown that the two characters had feelings for one another.
I also think the romance lacked heat and longing. While not every romance has to be sexy and steamy, I do think that there should be some element of longing that plays out in how the characters interact physically. One place where Riley actually does this pretty well is when Patience discusses how well she works with Busick while taking care of Lionel at night - the two hand him over to one another and move around the room as if doing a “dance,” and they brush against one another and smell each other’s scent. But other than that, it felt like I was smacked in the face with statements like “I noticed his mouth and wondered what it would be like to kiss it” or “Didn’t you notice? He follows you with his eyes!” I personally like these physical moments to be a little more subtle and for them to build on one another without the author having to spell out what they mean for me.
TL;DR: A Duke, the Lady, and a Baby has an intriguing premise and good characters, but ultimately lacks a strong plot, gripping prose style, or steamy romantic chemistry. Most of what holds this book back is the overuse of dialogue and rhetorical questions to create suspense, as well as the tendency to tell not show. While I would love to rate this book higher, the prose just isn’t there.
