The terms of the bet that actually got Anakin out were, and I just went and watched the relevant parts of tPM to check (which is something I never complain about doing, so thanks)

"I'll wager my new racing pod against the boy and his mother [that Sebulba doesn't win]." And then when Watto said no racing pod is worth two slaves, "The boy, then." Watto hemmed and hawed and said "We'll let fate decide" with a six-sided blue and red chance cube. Blue for Anakin and red for Shmi. (Dice are not useful when Qui-Gon is in the room and cares which side lands up, and it's fairly clearly shown that he cheated.)

Nothing is said about Anakin’s being freed - the bet is for a transfer of ownership.

The key part that I think you’re going for is a line after the race: "You can bring the parts to the main hangar. I'll come by your shop later so you can release the boy." Unfortunately that gets us no forrader, because it's not clear whether it means 'release Anakin to my ownership' or 'release Anakon from slavery' and Qui-Gon does not really do unnecessary words even when they would be really helpful. Watto is clearly under the impression throughout this conversation that Qui-Gon owns Anakin now.

You're right about Anakin being manumitted on Tatooine (it's at 1:05:31 but I only have the inverse running time rather than the timestamp); Qui-Gon tells Shmi "Anakin has been freed" and Anakin, "You’re no longer a slave."

I maintain that there was a non-zero period of time in which at least on some level Anakin was considered Qui-Gon’s property, but looking at lighting I think it's less than a day, possibly less than two hours.

Was Anakin free before leaving Tatooine YES, did Qui-Gon at any point legally own Anakin ARGUABLY ALSO YES.

Let’s be real. His expense reports are widely known to be like this.

After the Empire fell, they returned to Tatooine. And they visited the farm.

Han landed the Falcon not far from the sandswept complex, almost reclaimed by the ocean of desert. By silent agreement they let Luke disembark alone.

Leia sat on the ramp of the ship, giving her brother space in his own grief but not wanting to leave him entirely alone. He stood at the boundary of the property, head bowed in silent communion with his loss.

The warmth of the suns was filtered through the shade the Falcon cast as Leia sat, legs tucked up to her chin. For a moment, she felt envious of Luke, that he had a physical place for his loss. Her own loss was an empty hole in space, forever left gaping.

Finally, Luke lifted his head and let out a long breath. He seemed to shake himself out of it and turned back towards Leia. There was still a heaviness to his steps, and Leia wasn't surprised when he held out a hand to her.

"Come on," he said. "I want you to meet someone."

She followed, bemused and curious. He led her from the shelter of the Falcon and into the sunlight, carving a path it was clear he had taken many times before.

It was a graveyard, not far from the homestead. Luke released Leia's hand and his own on the warn wood of a marker. Leia could make out through words carved into it.

We don’t talk about Leia killing Jabba enough. Her grandmother and father were born into slavery. Her blood was that of the desert sand and the shackles of bondage. Leia was never more a Skywalker than the day she strangled her slave master with the very chains he used to bind her. The daughter of Anakin Skywalker was the one who killed Tatooine’s most notorious slaver, and I find that really beautiful.

Yup at the addition about Kristina and Ludvig acting more like Wille’s managers than his parents. They’re so focused on his royal duties that they totally forget he’s a 16 year old kid who in the past few months has had to deal with: his beloved older brother’s sudden death, his cousin releasing revenge porn of him and his boyfriend, his mother protecting said cousin over him, and his mother then becoming seriously ill.

Although I also have to laugh uproariously at @wilmonshake ‘S original post with the crack about Anakin Skywalker. It’s true (and funny) in and of itself. But also Pernilla August (Kristina in Young Royals) literally played Anakin Skywalker’s mother in the Star Wars prequel trilogy!

So Anakin is kind of Wille’s other brother from another media franchise.

Owen and Beru never managed to have kids of their own despite always wanting them and having married right around the start of the Clone Wars because both of them got their Sex Ed from Shmi 'Immaculate Conception' Skywalker-Lars

considering that it worked out more or less as they'd wanted via Force-wizard baby-delivery before too long anyway, they never actually questioned this

padmé is the tallest skywalker lady with confirmed canon height, closely followed by shmi and mara;

jaina proudly holds the title of the tiniest adult skywalker;

anakin is the tallest skywalker ever, followed by jacen;

(is there a minimal height requirement for the banite sith of the family?);

JAINA AND JACEN’S HEIGHT DIFFERENCE IS 33 CM, THE TOP OF HER HEAD CAN BARELY REACH HIS SHOULDER, THAT'S GREAT;

they are the ultimate tol and smol sweu duo;

out of the three couples, luke and mara have the smallest height difference, just 12 cm 🥺❤;

adult jacen is barely taller than han;

(tall enough to get petty about it though);

luke and 17-ish anakin solo are the same height, but grown up nik would have been 2-3 cm taller;

and therefore no threat to luke's first (from the end) spot on the skywalker men height scale.

It's very interesting to me how Shmi haunts the narrative to only Anakin - everyone else forgets about her. Kind of like how she is in the fandom. It makes sense because of how little we see her in the movies. But she really is a massive part of Anakin's character, and his main reason for Falling is so what happened to Shmi won't happen to Padmé and I think that's very interesting.

Anakin frequently thinks of the parallels between his dreams of Padmé & of Shmi in ROTS. It is because of his experience with the Council not freeing Shmi that sets him up to not trust them all his life and why he can't bring himself to tell Obi-Wan (because no matter how much he loves Obi-Wan, he's still a Jedi and can't be trusted is how Anakin's poor, manipulated mind sees it) about his dreams of Padmé.

If Shmi had been cared about or remembered more by the Council, then perhaps they would have understood why Anakin is the way he is and prevented him from Falling.

A little bit of Hollow Knight in your Star Wars

I wanted something simple, yet emotional. I think i like it. It was a bit difficult to distribute the characters among the verses. Some fit perfectly, while others have to be interpreted. Like, "the lady, lovely and pale" suited Padme well too, but i choose "the writer" because of, well, a broken heart (i guess you can interpret the senator as a writer, in some sense?). "The sage and his sons all three" was also good for Yoda and his lineage (Dooku, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan). That's why I didn't take the last verse, because I couldn't find suitable characters for it (you can write your own ideas if you want).

But otherwise, I like the result.
