You're not glossing over the suffering and trauma the Scavengers have been put through at the hands of Artificer or having them all be ok with it just because they felt sorry about it like so many AUs like to do right?
Who said anything about them feeling sorry about it đ€Artificer has a lot of issues but if they were justified is not one of them they're grade A hater
On a more serious note: It depends. I don't like the 'genocidal maniac' style of characterization so they're pretty far from that, so if you consider anything less than that sympathetic you're not gonna find it here. They have a brain and a goal so their destruction is/was a little more targeted and less of a wildfire. They harm a lot of people in the process, and they don't particularly have any qualms with that ('Sometimes you get caught in the crossfire, get over it or punch back' mindset) but they aren't a killer for fun or a sadist or anything like that. As for what others think of them... What they did was still pretty awful, but I imagine its not something a lot of people know about. Or at least don't know that Artificer specifically did it. Not exactly something they're advertising and they also pretty much live in a toxic swamp away from the people who would be most suspicious.
#ask#rw anthro#Artificer knew exactly who they were aiming for this time#but also didnt really care if there was collateral#when I say that they dont really pay much mind to what they did do#its not because they have any particular problem with their actions#but more because they dont particularly think its something they need to bother thinking about anymore#unless someone wants to come and beat them up in revenge which#frankly they would be quiet happy about! they arent the most stable and would#frankly love for someone to try and murder them in their sleep it would be exciting for them#sadly the person most likely to do that is currently trying to clean up their mess

TJâs 2K request celebration!
Anonymous asked: Hey i was wondering if i could request a friends to lovers eddie x reader, its romantic and the tension finally breaks, its their first time with each other and the reader absolutely blows his mind sucking and fucking him, shes the best hes ever had and he wasnt expecting it to be THAT good, hes just sprawled out flushed and sweaty like hes seen god đ€đ€ Im just imagining him trying to get up to pee and his legs give out, he face plants in the hallway, his cheeks just out đ and youre both giggling
wc: 2.9k
Cw: friends to lovers, your and Eddieâs first time together, smut, oral (f + m) , p in v, talks about cuming inside but Eddie is wearing a condom.
Concealing your emotions around Eddie had become increasingly taxing over the past couple of months. Although you've been friends for a little over a year, you couldn't help but notice that something had shifted in your interactions with him.
You felt giddy when you were together. Your face, cheeks, and ears would feel on fire whenever he complimented you. You also found yourself thinking about him first thing in the morning, and when your head hit the pillow, fantasies of you and he would play in your mind until you fell asleep.
The flirting between the two of you was so unbelievably blatant, and any time you innocently did it in front of your friends, they would make gagging noises. You never thought much of it because thatâs just how you and Eddie were, thatâs how youâve always been, it was never serious for you, until it was.
It was one particular comment he had made that made it all switch for you. It was late at night, and you and he had been smoking together at his place. Heâd told you that âyou are the only person in the whole world who makes him feel whole.â You could have kissed him right then and there, and that thought scared you.
Ever since that night, Eddie has always been at the forefront of your mind, especially on the night of that party, when he expressed his feelings for you during a game of truth or dare.
In all honesty, Eddie had been set up by Dustin and Steve. They were tired of hearing him go on and on about you for a year and a half, so they fed Eddie a bunch of alcohol and insisted on playing a game of truth or dare.
Finally, when it was time, Steve asked Eddie, âWho do you like?â He drunkenly but confidently said your name. You hadnât believed him because he was so drunk, but Nancy reminded you, âDrunken thoughts are sober words.â
When you were both sober the next morning, you marched your way to the trailer to set the record straight. You needed to know if what Eddie said had any slice of truth to it. At first, he refused to even look at you, embarrassed by his actions, but when you confronted him about it, he could only nod his head âyes.â
Your stomach erupted with butterflies as he confessed heâd always liked you like that. Like more than a friend. He didnât want to lose you because youâre one of the most important people in his life.
You didnât let him finish speaking because your lips were on his. This kiss was everything that you had wanted it to be. Itâs the type of kiss youâve only been dreaming about every night before going to bed.
After one of the best makeout sessions of your life, Eddie insisted he take you out on a proper date before things moved forward because âyou deserve the world.â His words, not yours.
Dating Eddie was fun and easy. You were such good friends before, so you were already comfortable with one another, but now you got to steal kisses and hold each other's hands without worry. The only problem was that youâve been on five dates with Eddie, and neither of you has yet to make a move past steamy makeouts.
It was weird, in a way. He was your friend, and you didnât want to seem too pushy, and neither did he. You both were too chicken to let one anotherâs hands roam too far without worrying about the other's reaction.
Eddie didnât even know if you would want to have sex with him. You said you liked one another more than a friend, but you were you. You are everything to Eddie, and if he fucked this up by moving too quickly, he would never forgive himself. So, he played it safe.
Stolen kisses on cheeks, innocent hand holdingâhe wouldnât initiate further than kissing until you wanted, but the problem was that you and he never talked about it, and he was not picking up on your signals.
It was coming to the end of your sixth date with Eddie, and you would be damned if you let the night end with you in your separate beds.
Eddie walked you to your door and went for a kiss goodnight, but you stopped him, âI want you to come inside.â You smiled sheepishly, and Eddie, nothing but your local follower, humbly listened to your request.
âCan I get you a drink? You ask as you guide him to your living room couch.
âSure, Iâll take whatever youâre having.â Eddie rubs his sweaty hands over his jeans.
You come back a few moments later with two beer bottles in hand.
âThanks,â Eddie smiles, seemingly more comfortable.
âEddie, can we talk about something?â You ask nervously as you sit down.
Shit, here it was. You want to go back to just friends.
âS-sureâ Eddie swallows the lump in his throat, the confidence suddenly drained out of his body.
âDo you think Iâm attractive?â
âWhat?â This is not where he thought the conversation was going.
âWeâve known each other for so long, and this is our sixth date, and we havenât⊠you knowâŠâ You look down, embarrassed to say what is on your mind.
âHavenât what, sweetheart.â
You take a deep sigh, building up your confidence.
âSex.â
âOh uh-Iâ
âItâs ok if youâre not attracted to me-â
âWhat! No! God no!â
âThen why havenât you made a move?â
âI didnât want to scare you awayâŠâ
âScare me away?
â Iâm obsessed with you to the point itâs a bit embarrassing.â
âAnd Iâm not obsessed with you?â You counter back.
âI didnât think youâd be into me like thatâŠâ
âItâs all I think about.â
That was the confirmation that Eddie needed to hear.
âSo do you uh,â he ears his throat, âwant to umm.â
âYes,â you nod your head enthusiastically.
Slowly, Eddie leans in to kiss you. Itâs soft and gentle until you lean in and press into his lips more.
A low moan leaves Eddieâs throat, and you canât help but smile into the kiss as his hands trail up your upper thigh to your waist, pulling your body closer and closer until you are straddled on top of him.
Finally, he was taking control like you had wanted for so long. You pulled away to catch your breath, pushing Eddieâs brown tendrils out of the way so you could latch your lips onto the side of his neck.
âMmmm, baby,â he moaned.
Your heart skipped a beat with his words; that was the first time heâd called you that, and you yearned for more.
âGod, I want you so bad.â his breath had become heavy as his chest pumped up and down.
âYou have me, baby,â you bravely let slip the pet name.
âFuckâ he groaned as the blood rushed down to his stiffening cock.
âHow do you want me?â Your confidence was growing with each passing touch.
âFuuuuuck, you canât just say shit like that to me, sweetheart.â
âWhy not?â You pout playfully.
You could feel his cock against your cunt, and you rolled your hips to test out the waters.
âOooh! You are a dirty girl.â Eddie grits through his teeth as he stills your hips by gripping onto your ass, and a wave of arousal floods your lace panties. The panties youâve been saving for each passing date.
âCan I suck your cock?â
âYes,â Eddie blurts out without a second passing thought.
You slide off the couch, and Eddie shifts forward for you before he undoes his pants while you place a pillow under your knees.
The butterflies in your stomach still havenât settled as you wait impatiently to see what he looks like. From what you could feel in his lap, he wouldnât disappoint you.
As Eddie shifts the fabric uncovering his cock, your mouth waters with anticipation. Youâre mesmerized by the sight of it, itâs long and thick, and the tip is so pink itâs just begging to be sucked, kissed and licked.
Eddie watches as your face turns into a grin as you bite your lip. Youâre entirely giddy as you lean forward to take his hard length in your hand.
A soft âfuckâ leaves Eddieâs lips as the tips of your fingers brush the shaft and take it into your gentle fingertips.
âYouâre so big,â you purr.
Eddie was about to respond but your mouth is enveloping his cock.
âOh my god,â he sputters. He cannot believe that this is his life, that he is here with you at this very moment. He never thought his most intimate daydreams would one day come to fruition.
Eddie snapped out of his own head as you sunk down lower and lower until you reached the back of your throat. You tried to breathe through your nose, but it was too much, so you returned to catch your breath.
âHoly shit, baby!â
There he goes, throwing around that word again, which makes you melt for him. All you want is to please him, to make him feel good.
âYou like that baby? You like sucking on my cock?â
Fuck, he has a dirty mouth.
A whiny âmmmmmhmmmmmâ fills the room and only enhances Eddieâs pleasure.
You feel his hands grip your hair, pushing it out of the way for you. So ever the gentleman.
âNeed to see you, pretty girl.â There was no way Eddie was missing the sight of you taking him in your mouth because a bit of hair was in the way.
Eddie was trying everything in his power to not buck up his hips into you and down your throat. You were making it so hard because you were so good at this. Too goodâŠbut Eddie couldnât let his mind wander about how you are so good at head. No, he will allow himself to enjoy this moment. Heâs waited 20 months for this moment.
âBaby, baby, baby,â he chanted as your mouth slid up and down, swallowing the shaft, swirling your tongue on the tip each time before repeating it over and over and over again.
You canât help but touch yourself as youâre also pleasuring your boyfriend. The way his words were affecting your body was too much to ignore any longer.
âOh my god, youâre so hot; I need you; I need you now.â he watched as your fingers slipped between your skirt and your ruined panties, and he couldnât take it anymore. God, he wanted to fuck you so badly.
âMmmmmm, Eddie, please fuck me.â You remove your mouth and replace it with your hand as you jerk him off.
Your face is dripping with the mix of pre cum and saliva. Your eye makeup was a little smudged from the tears from when you gagged on his cock, but Eddie never thought you looked more beautiful.
âCome here.â
âYou going to ride me baby? Show me how much you want me? Or are you going to let me fuck you so hard you wonât be able to walk tomorrow.â
âWho needs legs anywayâ you let out a shaky laugh.
Eddieâs face morphed into a mischievous grin as he threw you over his shoulder and brought you to the bedroom.
He flopped you on your back, and you landed with a giggle that quickly was cut off by a hot kiss.
Before you knew it, you were both finally naked, and Eddie was taking in every inch of you like he was committing your body to memory.
âPerfect,â Eddie whispered before leaning in to kiss you. âPerfect,â he moved down to kiss your neck. âPerfect.â He muttered into your breast, taking a pebbled nipple into his mouth and making you arch up into him. He repeated his actions until he got to your weeping pussy.
âOh baby, look at you, youâve been crying for me, havenât you⊠You just want so much attention; thatâs why youâre so wet for me. Donât worry. I need you just as badly.â He stuck out his tongue and ran it up your slick slit making you let out a long, drawn-out moan.
âThereâs my girl.â
Another wave of arousal washes through you at the term of endearment.
âHoly shit,â you try and catch your breath, but his tongue keeps going.
Eddie fucks your pussy with his tongue so good you canât believe this is real. Heâs eating you like youâre his last meal, and heâs enjoying every last drop.
âEddie, baby, oh god!â Youâre cuming in his tongue before you even comprehend whatâs happening to your body.
âDid you just!â He pops up in shock that he was able to make you cum in a few short minutes. In all honesty, he was kinda sad it didnât last longer. He loved being between your legs. It was his new favourite spot.
A breathy âuh-huhâ leaves your chest as you soak in the euphoria.
âCan weâŠ. Do you want to?âŠ. I canââ
âFuck me. Fuck me now, please. I donât want to walk tomorrow.â You begged in your fucked-out needy state.
âKeep talking like that baby.â
âI need you so bad; Iâve wanted you to fuck me for so long, please, Eddie.â
You were so long in your begging that by the time you had finished talking g Eddie already had on the condom and was aligning himself with your pussy.
âAre you ready?â he asked, and you answered by pulling him into another long, passionate kissâone full of wanting and need, one that was much overdue.
âIâll take that as a yes.â Eddie mumbles before he slowly slips himself into you.
The stretch was so good; you had been more than prepared for his cock, so when he entered you, all you felt was pleasure.
âOh god.â You clawed at his back, biting down on his shoulder, pussy clamping down on him.
âFuck, your pussy is so tight.â Eddie was already having a hard time fighting off his orgasm as his hips slowly rocked back and forth into you.
âMore.â You plead.
Eddie situated himself so he could fuck you like he meant it, to fuck you so good youâre seeing stars.
âBe careful what you wish for, baby.â You had no idea what was coming when it came to sex with Eddie.
He was an animal, a beast, a man untamed.
His hips start getting faster, and his movements are calculated and raw. Each undulation of his hips into you was so delicious you could no longer think. Youâre crying out as his cock hits your sweet spot in each thrust. He works his cock into your pussy as it sucks him in each time, taking him in willingly and refusing to let go.
âThatâs it, baby, taking my cock so goodâ he watches as his cock disappears inside of you, gripping onto your soft inner thighs to spread your legs as wide as they can go.
âLook at that baby,â his thumb brushes your swollen clit, âso pretty and puffy for me,â he praises, and your pussy clamps down on him once again.
âOh, she likes it when Iâm nice to her, huh?â
Fuck he needs to stop talking to your pussy, or else you canât hold on much longer.
âI want to come!â
âCome on, my cock, baby, show me youâre mine.â
That did it for you. Your second orgasm takes over your mind, body and spirit. Your floating on a cloud as Eddie rolls his cock into it and runs your clit so good youâre seeing stars.
Eddie is out of breath, but he still continues chasing after his own orgasm.
âI want you to come,â you mindlessly say, not realizing you're talking.
âYeah? You want me to fuck you full of my cum. Is that what you want?â
âPlease! Give it to me, baby,â you pout, and the look on your face sends Eddie over the edge.
Jagged breaths fill the silent room as Eddie collapses on top of you before he rolls over to catch his breath.
âWow.â Is all you say before giggling.
âDid I rock your world or what.â
âYeah,â you sigh. It's too bad it took you this long to do it; we could have been doing this for weeks now.â
âHey, come here,â he drags you into his arms, stealing another kiss.
âIâm going to get a towel.â Eddie sits up on the edge of the bed so he can take off the soiled condom and toss it in the trash.
Not realizing how shaky his legs are, they give out, and he falls forward.
âOh my god, are you okay?â You start laughing.
âGod damn, I fucked you good, didnât I?â he laughs.
âAnd you said I was the one who couldnât walk tomorrow.â You shriek in a fit of giggles as Eddie lay on the floor, ass up face down.
âYouâre a goddamn succumbs, you know that? Sucked the life right out of me.â He laughs into the floor.
âYour ass is like a fuzzy peach, I want t to bite it.â
âWhy donât you come over?â he says, dragging you into his arms. And have a taste, then.

big question. i'm cis (afab) and my gf is trans (amab) and i'm sorta having a hard time reconciling something. i've been a hard line feminist since i was about 8, by 12 i was a practical library on everything and anything womens lib. i'm spending a lot more time around trans people especially my gf now and i'm sorta struggling to reconcile the trans experience with my feminism. like- i'll see trans women being like "i hate my body :(" "my voice is awful" "i need [x thing to try to pass] ugh" and like my first thought is always "NO! THATS HOW THEY FUCKING GET YOU!!! THE PATRIARCHY WANTS YOU TO HATE YOURSELF SO YOU ENSLAVE YOURSELF TO CAPITALISM AND LIVE IN A CONSTANT STATE OF NEED FOR NEW PRODUCTS TO WARD OFF THE EVER PRESENT SELF HATRED BROUGHT ON YOU BY SOCIETY" and they go "well then how do i pass/transition?" and i honestly don't know and i also don't know how far it goes before its no longer dysphoria but instead the intentional subjugation of women by patriarchy for profit. i wanna help my fellow ladies but i honestly don't know how to like- apply the feminism i was taught as a child to trans women and i want to learn as soon as possible so that i can start doing it like yesterday
hi there,
I'll be honest: if it feels hard to apply the feminism you learned as a kid to your trans friends, that's probably because the feminism you were taught didn't have trans woman in mind.
luckily, the answer to this is something that I consider to be feminism 101: what a woman does with her body is, ultimately, her fucking business.
listen: I agree with you that the beauty industry(TM) is evil. it's misogynistic, it's exploitative, it thrives by making women feel bad enough about themselves to make them spend money on shit they don't need, etc. we all know this.
now, having said that: women who like makeup or wear heels or get laser hair removal or whatever other asinine thing are not my oppressor, nor are they my enemy. dare I say, we have bigger problems.
we also need to consider that many trans women are coming to these choices from a VERY different place than many cis women are. while I think my fellow cis women really benefit from reminders that they're allowed to stop shaving or wearing eyeliner or dieting or whatever, that's because most of us have had those actions forced on us from very young ages and may genuinely need a hand to feel secure breaking out of those behaviors.
the majority of trans women are not coming from a background where they were encouraged to partake in the same personal grooming habits and modes of presentation as cis women; many of them have, in fact, been ostracized, bullied, threatened, and otherwise hurt because of forays into forms of presentation that are considered feminine. no matter how good your intentions may be, approaching your advice indelicately can, unfortunately, make you come across as no different than any transphobe on the street trying to enforce cisnormative societal expectations. it also must be said that, for many trans women, the ability to "pass" is a matter of security - for having their status as women recognized at all, and to avoid harassment and abuse in public spaces. if you live in America, like I do, politicians in power currently have an extremely explicit anti-trans agenda that can make it harrowing to be visible as a trans person, and trans women in particular are frequently targeted for violence.
there are absolutely critiques to be made the way the many trans women are expected to perform hyperfemininity. the notion that someone is duty bound to drastically change their appearance in order to transition at all is itself extremely rooted in cisnormativity, and "passing" is often contingent on being young, thin, able-bodied, reasonably wealthy, and hewing as closely to Eurocentric standards of beauty as possible. that's not awesome! but that's also not the fault of any individual; no trans person asked to be born into a world where gender norms are so narrow and failing to pass can come with a very real risk of physical danger.
also, if I can circle back to this: again, women who participate in aspects of the beauty industry are not our enemies. there are always going to be some number of women who enjoy doing their makeup or like spending time fussing over their little outfits or want breast implants or whatever. some of those women are going to be trans. my official feminist stance on this is that I don't give a shit, because I believe in bodily autonomy even when it involves things I would not do personally and the choices that individual women make about how they want to style their little meat body don't even crack the top 100 things that I'm worried about right now. it's actually kind of vitally important, politically, that trans people be able to safely pursue their preferred gender expression; while it's not particularly revolutionary for a cis woman to go outside all dolled up, whether a trans woman can do that safely is a pretty basic litmus test for how safe a given space is for queer people. it's a ridiculously low bar, and many places will still fail to clear it.
so, yeah, I don't know, dude. be there to talk to your trans girlies if they want to start unpacking some of the pressure they feel to conform to a very rigid idea of womanhood, but whether or not they can walk down the street in your neighborhood safely is a WAY bigger issue than whether they decide to do voice training or not.
if you really want to cut to the root of the insecurity and vulnerability that the beauty industry thrives on exploiting, your time is much better spent working to ensure the trans women in your life feel safe and supported and have a community where they can find support regardless of how they look.
necessary disclaimer I'm a cis girl, any transfemme folks please share your voice here and feel free to clap my ass if I've said something out of line.

a while ago you said that Starclan cats design kittens and customize them with patterns and colors from their parents genes. So, do the clan cats raise any eyebrows when it comes to people who know cat genetics? Is there a geneticist who is holding their head wondering how these two cats have this colored kit while their starclan designer was just playing around? Or do the Starclan designers still have to stay within the rules?
Basically, do the humans notice that some of these clan cats are sparkle cats lol
I try to not get too "lost in the weeds" since the humans aren't the focus of the story, just taking care that they DO have real motivations behind their actions rather than construction crews materializing out of nowhere to Do A Chaos, but...
First, the genetics of cats in Albion are different than humans in equivalent Great Britain.
Partially, this is because I honestly just don't really enjoy learning about in-depth genetics or applying them realistically. I like drawing anime characters and writing anime battles, so they have anime genetics. But more than that, off-screen, the intelligence of cats has altered the timeline of this world.
If cats really were capable of higher thinking, that totally would have had some butterfly effects. I like dropping crazy alt-history and then not elaborating on it, because it's funny. Archimedes' cat helped him invent a death ray, btw.
On that note of genetics though, you guessed right. StarClan designers DO have to work with what they have. Whatever the genetics of this alternate universe of cats are, every kit born still abides by the laws of nature.
Which brings me to...
Second, the researchers do notice that the Clan cats are special. In fact, there is a "study of magic" in this universe-- Thaumatology. "The science of wonder."
(There's no world where magic actually factually exists that science isn't all over it lmao)
Thaumatology facts I haven't shared so far since it's all offscreen and just Bonus Worldbuilding;
It is a "soft science," not a hard one.
It has a LOT of problems with replicability. Thaumatologists and Quantum Physicists have a lot of in-jokes.
The most well known (to the point of being a cliche) is "magic and quantum particles both hate being watched."
Magic is highly variable based on a bajillion very personal factors, like emotion, environment, culture, personal background, etc, so it's severely difficult to re-create it in controlled environments.
Thaumatology has a lot of overlap with sociology, archeology, and theology, so people from these fields work together a lot.
There was absolutely not a dedicated Thaumatologist working in the Research Team early on, sadly.
It was probably discovered when the Battle of the True Eclipse blew out a bunch of field cameras.
It's pretty common that photography equipment fritzes out a bit during "supernatural" times like eclipses, but the damage was extensive enough to be noteworty
The Clan cats were initially notable just for the fact they had advanced culture.
Cats are usually comparable to crows and monkeys, in this universe. So cats with fire and a crude writing system were enough to SHAKE the field of zoology.
The fact they're cats helped a lot. The public loves cats, enough that since their discovery after Speckletail attacked a bulldozer, massive outcry has secretly helped the Clans several times.
The discovery that the culture also has Thaumatological elements is more of a goldmine for a scientist than the public, though.
It's common knowledge that "animals are magic," because humanity projects traits onto them. "Of course they do, they're cats...?"
The Thaumatologist is freaking out because "THE CAT IS PROVABLY DOING ITS OWN THAUMATURGY"
Most people don't know the difference between Thaumaturgy (the functional work it does on the world) and Thaumology (the study of that as a whole), so this particular scientist is going to have a hard time explaining WHY this distinction is so special.
(And possibly even offensive to certain groups, who would insist only humans are capable of this)
In any case, eventually there would be Thaumatological interest in the Clan cats, but they weren't there in the mid to late 2010s when BB!ASC takes place.
#One of the things I like doing with The Researchers is making them relatable to my scientist friends lmaoo#So I like imagining the mundane reality of it all#There's exciting moments that make it all worth it-- but they have to grapple with budget a lot#Or their subjects breaking their equipment#Or an idea not working out the way they imagined it would#And trying to keep the public interested in their REALLY COOL PROJECT!!!#I was reading a paper on the swamp project in delamere and felt Incredibly Violent when i saw that they couldn't extensively re-wet one spo#Because there was a goddamn Go Ape Zipline#SCREW YOUR ZIPLINE OH MY GOD JUST MOVE IT#BITE BITE BITE BITE#''We could not remove the nearby patch of rhodo-motherfucking-dendron because a landowner thinks it's pretty :(''#1000000 US National Park Systems kill this man#Better Bones Au#Millie's Radio Collar

When attempting to critique the values of a long-running franchise like STAR TREK, it's important to draw a distinction between superficial issues and structural ones.
"Superficial" in this sense doesn't mean "minor" or "unimportant"; it simply means that an issue is not so intrinsic to the premise that the franchise would collapse (or would be radically different) were it changed or removed. For example, misogyny has been a pervasive problem across many generations of STAR TREK media, which have often been characterized by a particular type of leering-creep sexism that was distasteful at the time and has not improved with age. However, sexism and misogyny are not structural elements of the TREK premise; one can do a STAR TREK story where the female characters have agency and even pants without it becoming something fundamentally different from other TREK iterations (even TOS, although there are certainly specific TOS episodes that would collapse if you excised the sexism).
By contrast, the colonialism and imperialism are structural elements â STAR TREK is explicitly about colonizing "the final frontier" and about defending the borders, however defined, of an interstellar colonial power. Different iterations of STAR TREK may approach that premise in slightly different ways, emphasizing or deemphasizing certain specific aspects of it, but that is literally and specifically what the franchise is about. Moreover, because STAR TREK has always been heavily focused on Starfleet and has tended to shy away from depicting life outside of that regimented environment, there are definite limits to how far the series is able to depart from the basic narrative structure of TOS and TNG (a captain and crew on a Starfleet ship) without collapsing in on itself, as PICARD ended up demonstrating rather painfully.
This means that some of the things baked into the formula of STAR TREK are obviously in conflict with the franchise's self-image of progressive utopianism, but cannot really be removed or significantly altered, even if the writers were inclined to try (which they generally are not).
What I find intensely frustrating about most modern STAR TREK media, including TNG and its various successors, is not that it can't magically break its own formula, but that writer and fan attachment to the idea of TREK as the epitome of progressive science fiction has become a more and more intractable barrier to any kind of meaningful self-critique. It's a problem that's become increasingly acute with the recent batch of live-action shows, which routinely depict the Federation or Starfleet doing awful things (like the recent SNW storyline about Una being prosecuted for being a genetically engineered person in violation of Federation law) and then insist, often in the same breath, that it's a progressive utopia, best of all possible worlds.
This is one area where TOS (and to some extent the TOS cast movies) has a significant advantage over its successors. TOS professes to be a better world than ours, but it doesn't claim to be a perfect world (and indeed is very suspicious of any kind of purported utopia). The value TOS most consistently emphasizes is striving: working to be better, and making constructive choices. Although this can sometimes get very sticky and uncomfortable in its own right (for instance, Kirk often rails against what he sees as "stagnant" cultures), it doesn't presuppose the moral infallibility of the Federation, of Starfleet, or of the characters themselves. There's room for them to be wrong, so long as they're still willing to learn and grow.
The newer shows are less and less willing to allow for that, and, even more troublingly, sometimes take pains to undermine their predecessors' attempts along those lines. One appalling recent example is SNW's treatment of the Gorn, which presents the Gorn as intrinsically evil (and quite horrifying) in a way they're not in "Arena," the TOS episode where they were first introduced. The whole point of "Arena" is that while Kirk responds to the Gorn with outrage and anger, he eventually concedes that he may be wrong: There's a good chance that the Gorn are really the injured party, responding to what they reasonably see as an alien invasion, and while that may be an arguable point, sorting it out further should be the purview of diplomats rather than warships. By contrast, SNW presents the Gorn as so irredeemably awful as to make Kirk's (chronologically later) epiphany at best misguided: The SNW Gorn are brutal conquerors who lay eggs in their captives (a gruesome rape metaphor, and in presentation obviously inspired by ALIENS) when they aren't killing each other for sport, and even Gorn newborns are monsters to be feared. Not a lot of nuance there, and no space at all for the kind of detente found in TOS episodes like "The Devil in the Dark."

The United States of Fanfiction vs. Project 2025
Hello, friends!
I happen to be passionate about free speech, and fandom in particular, and since I've been seeing a number of posts to the tune of "Project 2025 is going to ban (and potentially criminalize) fanfiction," Iâve decided to take a deep dive into the issue over the last 24 hours. Iâve done a decent amount of research between other tasks, and I've asked my spouse â who is more politically aware than I am â to explain an embarrassing number of things to me like I'm five. The following is a result of my efforts, and it pertains to Project 2025 as it may affect freedom of speech as well as fandom.
This is not a diagnostic, or a clairvoyant look. I will get some things wrong, and so will anyone else who attempts to predict the future. But feel free to conversate with me, correct me, and contribute your own takes.
The tl/dr version of this article is as follows:
Project 2025 is an ethos and a "wish list" put out by a conservative think tank. It is not a law, a bill, or any kind of concrete action.
No content will become illegal that isn't already.
The IS a concrete law called KOSA that's been making its way through the federal legislature for the last 2-3 years. It is meant to require for-profit platforms (aka not AO3, but yes Tumblr) to funnel certain "harmful" content away from their users who are minors. If you support free speech and the actual safety of kids online, you should OPPOSE this bill. That is a concrete thing you can do. But again, no content is suddenly being outlawed or banned.
For those who want to know more, without further ado... Brace yourselves, this is going to be long.
Unsurprisingly, there seems to be a decent amount of misinformation on this issue.
I'll say right off the bat -- Project 2025 is a huge problem and it is scary, because it aims to dismantle a lot of the freedoms and government structures we take for granted.Â
But here is what Project 2025 ISN'T.
It is NOT a law, and it is NOT a bill.Â
Rather, it is a broad, 900-page "wish list" put out by an ultra-conservative think tank called The Heritage Foundation, which has existed since the 80's. A lot of actual conservatives consider it frankly crazy.Â
There are a number of staff from Trump's first administration who have joined The Heritage Foundation over the past several years. At least one of those people, Trump has hired back. Outside of that, he has gone back and forth about his views on Project 2025, as he does on most things.Â
Now, what are think tanks? They're exactly what they sound like. They think. And they put out really long documents aimed at influencing policymaking. They do not actually make the policies, but they aspire to carve their ideological pathways into the minds of those who do.
Now, how are laws actually made? Laws are proposed in the House of Representatives or the senate. By representatives and senators. They then take a really long time and a lot of back and forth to pass. The president, his cabinet, and various other stakeholders such as think tanks and lobbyists (people with lots of money who make it their business to hassle lawmakers) can influence the legislative process. Then, once laws get passed after much trial and tribulation, they may get challenged in various courts as unconstitutional. Trump in particular can influence the legislative process by appointing judges who will make decisions aligning with his ideology. (Think what he has done to the Supreme Court).
Now, back to Project 2025, the section everyone in fandom seems to be worried about runs as follows:
"Pornography, manifested today in the omnipresent propagation of transgender ideology and sexualization of children, for instance, is not a political Gordian knot inextricably binding up disparate claims about free speech, property rights, sexual liberation, and child welfare. It has no claim to First Amendment protection. Its purveyors are child predators and misogynistic exploiters of women. Their product is as addictive as any illicit drug and as psychologically destructive as any crime. Pornography should be outlawed. The people who produce and distribute it should be imprisoned. Educators and public librarians who purvey it should be classed as registered sex offenders. And telecommunications and technology firms that facilitate its spread should be shuttered."
Take note of the language. Its tone is that of incendiary rhetoric, not law. It tells its readers (which it assumes are Trump loyalists) that the end-goal is a total crackdown on pornography â whatever it decides that is. But these pie-in-the-sky discursive acrobatics simply donât land. They are a what without any semblance of a how. And while that vagueness is inherently terrifying (because a lack of firm definitions always suits those in power), please do not lose sight of the fact that the Project 2025 lays out Napoleonic plans without any hint at how they will be accomplished.Â
Law, and actual legal documents go into excruciating detail as to who, what, when, where, and how will be affected. They make at least some attempt to describe what is and isnât under a law's jurisdiction.Â
While Project 2025 indeed sets an frightening ethos, it does not give a blueprint. What is lost in the terrifying vision it proposes is how hard it would be to implement their ideas on the mass scale they are proposing.
That being said, we absolutely need to be vigilant for any initiatives that align with those views. Because chances are, if we do nothing, the freedoms will erode gradually, similar to a "frog in the pot" phenomenon, where the temperature goes up one degree at a time until the frog is cooked.Â
There are concrete things to worry about. And some of them are lost in the blinding Mercury effect that is Project 2025. One of them in particular already has a head start.
I am talking of course about KOSA (the Kids Online Safety Act), which is making its way through the federal legislature and has been... for the last 2-3 years. Many people have identified it as a "Censorship Bill in Disguise" that mandates for-profit websites to "protect" their underage users from certain "harmful" material.Â
What does this mean in practice? That is tech companies are aware that a user is a minor (there is some info floating around that this will be done by government ID's, but that's not actually written into the law), then they will be required to funnel certain material away from them. ***Specifically, algorithms and other design elements will not be allowed to suggest certain content to minors, though that content will still be hostable and searchable.***
The obvious problem is that what's "harmful" may be broadly defined, and there is concern that kids will not be able to access information about LBGTQ+, mental health, reproductive rights, etc.Â
But again, here's what NOT happening. Unlike the language of Project 2025, nothing is being criminalized for creators. In other words, no, you will not go to jail for writing fanfiction, and fanfiction will not be illegal, no matter what itâs about. Nothing that is of an "adult" nature will actually be illegal that isn't already. The law is a mandate on the tech companies to funnel it away from their underage users. ***Importantly, they are not required to delete or "block" any content -- they just can't suggest it or push it to underage users via algorithms or other "design features." Of course, this is easier said than done, and the tech companies may in fact short-circuit compliance by changing their TOS to avoid hosting certain material to begin with, and they may still delete content, and no, none of this is good or even "not that bad," but this does not translate to an automatic, blanket ban.***
Critically, as the proposed KOSA law is written now, nonprofits like AO3 are exempt. But tumblr is not, tiktok is not, instagram is not. So fandom will be affected, but not universally.
(That is, AO3 is exempt for now. There is a bill in progress called HR 9495 that would allow the government to strip organizations of their nonprofit status without any due process - that's scary too).
But here's the other thing. KOSA has been around since 2022, and it keeps getting blocked and rewritten in Congress. It was endorsed by Joe Biden himself -- way before Trump, before Project 2025, before all of it! In the most recent session of the House of Representatives, it stalled again before the House went on recess for the election. There is a decent amount of opposition to KOSA from the tech lobby (unsurprising) as well as from Republicans themselves, who fear that it will block kids from seeing anti-abortion rhetoric (ironic).
However, the KOSA example gives an idea of how slow the legislative bodies are to get things done. It also highlights the difference between Project 2025's extremist and incendiary language, and what is actually happening and how it happens.
So: what can we do?
The most concrete thing you can do right now is to work to stop KOSA. Part of the reason why it didnât pass the first two times was because people protested. To this end, you may call your representatives, email them, write to them, protest peacefully if you want to. This bill is actually dangerous, and a wolf in sheep's clothing, because "protect the children" is always an easy sell to someone who's not looking closely. And you can click here to fill out a form opposing it: https://www.stopkosa.com/Â
But there is more!
KEEP CREATING!! We are all fundamentally creative people. Creativity awakens the senses. We will not find victory by being numb and leaving creative energy on the table. So draw. Compose. Hit publish. Hit send. And hit one another up when youâre feeling down, or when you think that your friends might need a good hello. And to my fellow writers, KEEP DYING! KEEP WRITING IT DOWN! (Thatâs the words of CK Williams, by the way). We are the multitude, and the more we make our voices heard the harder it is for those who would silence us to pretend it will be easy.
Iâll leave you with a few quotes from a famously bizarre French philosopher whose works Mr. NisilĂ« and I I ran into in college. His name was Gilles Deleuze, and he very much believed that corrupted power only works when the people on the bottom give up by giving way.
âA concept is a brick. It can be used to build a courthouse of reason. Or it can be thrown through the window.â
âIf you're trapped in the dream of the Other, you're f-cked.â
âBring something incomprehensible into the world!â
âWriting has nothing to do with meaning. It has to do with land-surveying and cartography, including the mapping of countries yet to come.â

Lance Stroll x HornerDaughter! BFF Smut.
Ok this is loosely based of an audio linked by @2-fast-2-curious because sheâs doing gods work out here with her F1 audio masterlist, Iâm not sure if I should link the actual audio I donât wanna steal anything, but anyway hereâs some Lance smut so 18+. warning: explicit content, intoxication, funny drunken arguments, masturbation, unprotected sex, unexpected sex, creampie, oral, admission of feelings? probs not a warning but yolo. I LOVE writing as reader being Hornerâs daughter itâs just fun ok. Reader and Lance are besties and have been for a while but they reunite and something clicks between them, anyway enjoyâŠ
Partying it up in Monaco was probably the pinnacle of my life. Nothing could get better than being 22 and dancing on a yacht with all of your closest friends. Promiscuous Girl was blaring through the speakers as the yacht began its way back to dock in the harbour. It was a Saturday night and the expensive town of Monte Carlo was bustling. Vibrant nights exploded through the night sky and vibrations of all kinds of music spread through my body.
âShould you be up there?!â Lance asked, one of my closest friends as he stared up to me on the back of the drivers platform. âNo.â I giggled, âcâmon, letâs get you down.â He held his hands out, helping me down off the side. âWeâre going back to Jaspers, are you coming?â He questioned as I jumped, a little uneasy on my feet as the boat rocked slightly.
âWeâre going back to Jaspers? And not a club?!â I almost burst out laughing, out of everywhere to choose from we were going back to a house party- equivalent to afters? âYeah, I donât know why.â Lance shook his head, watching me for a second before scanning around the boat. When he turned away I stole a glimpse before mimicking his action of watching all our friend. The good majority of us had known each other for a good 10+ years, now we were all back in Monaco to celebrate nothing particular, it felt like a school reunion. âArenât you glad to be back with everyone?â I then nudged the Canadian who Iâd known since being a child. âYeah, itâs kinda weird. Everything feels normal again.â
âYeah, I know what you meanâŠâ I faintly muttered, gazing into the distance. âYouâre so corny, you know!â I then teased, jabbing his side. âHey, you asked!â He playfully knocked me back as we engaged in a gentle scuffle. âYouâre the one person I hoped wasnât coming to this party!â He joked as I gasped, âand youâre the one person I want to push overboard!â With a gentle shove back, Lance giggled cheekily, holding my arms still.
âGet your dirty hands off me. I donât know where theyâve been.â I teased, firmly crossing my arms across my chest. âYou donât even wanna know, miss Horner.â
âYouâre right, I donât⊠Iâm gonna go get a drink before we dock, you coming?â âSureâŠâ
Soon enough we docked, and the main bulk of us went to Jasperâs house. I mainly lingered around my closest girls, piling into the bathroom, sitting in the bathtub, having deep conversations in the tub one minute and then dancing the next. It was just like how it felt when we were all 16. Iâd always eagerly tried to recreate my teenage years, missing the freedom and carefree attitude I always had, so the whole nice was like a free cure for any of my problems. At one point, Jasper and Kiran, butted heads. They were way too drunk, and you just know when their shirts off and their egoâs were inflated, thereâd be trouble. âNah bro, youâre still the same as school.â Jasper waved him off, Kiran frowning, squint growing as he got progressively more angry. Kiran and Jasper went to the same international school in the south of France, they always fought. Theyâd fight over girls, alcohol, cars, money, and when there was nothing to fight over theyâd fight over nothing.
âWhat the fuck is that supposed to mean?â The Italian responded as a few of us gathered, waiting for the entertainment to start. âYouâre still a prick mate, you act like a fucking 16 year old.â âOh, here we goâŠâ Somebody muttered from besides me, I glanced up to see Lance and a smile grew. âWhat are they fighting over now?â
âErm, something to do with shoes and alcohol bottles, I donât even know.â I waved it off. âNice.â Lance, along with about six more of us stood and watched the argument progress until the men were almost head butting one another.
âMaybe I should stop this nowâŠâ Lance comically sighed. âOr maybe I should wait for it to get physical.â Within seconds it got physical. âOh shit.â Lance flew forwards and others attempted to break up the fight. It was comical, drunken fights always were so dramatic, it made me laugh. I stood there and laughed out loud, I mustâve looked so unhelpful but when masculine men got all fragile and crazy it was funny. The fight caused the party to end, probably at the right time, many people were staying there, but with my familyâs house nearby, I thought it would be best just to head back. âOh youâre leaving?!â My friend Molly exclaimed.
âIâm going to bed.â I yawned, my sobriety taking over and exhausting me. âWhat? Youâre not staying over here?!â She exclaimed. âI was gonna go to my bed.â I was then met with a chorus of complaints pleading me to stay as it would be âjust like old timesâ. What I didnât expect was to be stuffed on a sheet on the floor in a room where the air-con was blasting me to death. I was in my underwear and one of Jasperâs shirts, trying to bunch up as much blanket as possible but Naomi, who I slept besides, rolled over and took them all. After an hour or so the sleep wouldnât come, so I excused myself (silently) and just stood in the hallway shuddering slightly. I suppose it wasnât too late to go home, it was nearing 4:30AM and sleep would be non existent, unless I found somebody who actually had a bed to themselves. I turned lightly seeing the door to Lanceâs room on the bottom floor open, swiftly I patted down the stairs with a quiet giggle knowing I could bug him enough to sleep in the bed. We used to share all the time when we were younger, so to me it wasnât such a big deal.
Creeping in, I nudged open the door to see Lanceâs face lit up with the reflection of his face. âHey..â he whispered, a smile growing as he dropped his phone to one side. âCan I come in?â I asked.
âYeah, sure. Shut the door behind you.â He pushed himself up a little to reveal he was shirtless. Again, no big deal, right? I giggled, closing the door behind me as he patted the bed besides him. âCouldnât sleep?â He questioned. âNo, I was on the floor and Naomi was hogging the covers.â I tucked my legs up under me on the bed, facing him directly. âUnlucky. You cold? Come get under.â The Canadian hushed, budging up as I felt the relief of slipping under the blankets, warm from where heâd been laying.
âWhyâre you awake?â I then questioned pulling them all the way up over my shoulders. âCouldnât sleep. Hey, this is like old times again isnât it?â He nudged softly, the warm of his arm brushing against the cool of mine with a hiss. âYouâre so cold, câmere.â He wrapped his arm around me, sinking down into the sheets as we borderline cuddled. âNow itâs like old times.â I pointed out as he giggled again. âOh yeah? We used to do this a lot, didnât we?â Expect now it felt different. Lance and I were no longer awkward and frigid 16 year olds, he had muscles, I had boobs, there was extra parts pushing against extra parts and it made me feel⊠different.
âI know, back when we were both frigid.â I whispered knocking into his chest which my arm laid across. Lance let out a laugh a little too loud in return. âWe both were werenât we..â He then sighed as I let out a giggle before a comfortable silence took over us. âThis bed is so much comfier.â I muttered, staring into the darkness of the bedroom. Truthfully, there was something a lot more intimate about sharing a bed with Lance all these years later. âYouâre a lot comfier than you used to be.â I nuzzled up, my chest pressing up against his side. âMe? Really, why?â âMuscles.â I squeezed at his bicep playfully as he swatted me away when the action mustâve been ticklish. âYeah well, youâve got tits now, didnât you used to be like a waterboard?!â He fired back playfully as I choked out a gasp, attempting to push at him but his hands grasped mine.
âI had small ones, thank you very much!â Lance laughed at my response. âOh, what the fuck.â He quickly spoke, arm falling back around me and resting softly on my upper back. âWhat?â I giggled, pushing up. Our faces were super close and for the first time in forever I felt something spark up inside of me. Lanceâs smile softened as his eyes roamed over my face before down to my chest.
âWhoâs shirt is that?â âMy boyfriends.â I lied as Lance shifted quickly. âIâm kidding. Itâs Jaspers!â My eyes widened. âOh.â There was an evident relief on his face and in that moment I felt my knee knock against his leg. âI had no shirt to sleep in, but itâs kinda⊠uncomfortable.â The shirt was scratchy, it was drowning me and I most definitely couldnât sleep in it. âWhy donât you take it off?â Lance glanced up and down to my propped up state. His words were quick and I could see the slight worry that twitched in his eye after he answered. âTake it off? Now?â My breath was hitched as the two of us stared back to each other.
âYeahâŠâ Lance didnât break eye contact as my lips stretched out into a grin at his seriousness. âWhat? Shut the fuck up, Iâm being serious.â He joked as I smirked down, fiddling with the hem of it.
âBut Iâm not wearing anything underâŠâ âOh youâre not?â Lance seemed on edge, eyes constantly dropping down. The peaks of my nipples were pressed up against the fabric and if he looked close I swore he could see the outline of my piercings.
âNoâŠâ I whispered gently as his free hand slid forwards, fiddling with the end of my shirt. It seemed to happen in an instant that my top was off and my breasts were exposed. I giggled, covering them slightly as I laid back, Lance propped to the side of me. âDonât go all shy!â He chuckled. âIâm not, Iâm not.â I pushed them together slightly, feeling Lances eyes fixated on them. I knew I was getting turned on, I wondered if he felt the same? There was an undeniable tension between us and I was shocked that weâd actually crossed the barrier of being âjust friendsâ. âYouâve got really good tits.â His voice lowered, as I scanned over his body. âYour turn.â Except the only thing he was wearing was his underwear. With a smile, Lance pushed his hands under the hem of his Calvin Kleins, freeing himself but he was hidden under the duvet. âWhatâre we doing right now?â He quickly laughed to himself as I giggled, arching my back slightly. âIs this weird?â He then muttered, hand disappearing under the covers. âI donât know, is it?â
âNo⊠whatâd you- uh, want me to do?â Lance quietly asked, almost shyly. âI donât want you to do anything.â I teased, giggling as I glanced down. âYou just said take them off!â By the looks of it they were already half off. âI know!â âFuck it⊠now Iâm fully naked and youâre not!â He pointed out. âYou want me to take my underwear off?â My heart was beating rapidly as I laid against the pillow, gazing up to him. His hand brushed against my naked waist, resulting in me swallowing harshly.
âYeah, I want you to..â his voice was so gentle I barely heard it. I looked down, my hands sliding under the band of my thongs feeling his hand meeting mine and pushing them off, exposing me completely. I felt the blood rush to my core as I squeezed my legs together, looking back up to him with a smile.
âWhat do you wanna do now?â I lightly asked. âI dunno- you wanna kiss me?â To this I burst out laughing. âFine! We wonât kiss!â He chuckled, placing a hand on my stomach.
âWouldnât that make it weird?â I dumbly asked, becoming lost at the sensation of his large hand sprawled across my stomach and hip bone. âWhat and this wouldnât?â He muttered, fingers grazing over my skin as I inhaled deeply.
âNo.â I swallowed, glancing down to where Lanceâs hand had slipped off me and onto himself. âWhatâre you having a wank or something?â I teased. âNo, Iâm just⊠Iâm fucking hard.â He admitted as I felt a blush rise on my face.
âWhy?â
âWhy? Cos youâre naked and fucking hot as fuck right now.â He spoke as I smiled, âyou wanna touch yourself?â
âFuck, yeah.â Lance borderline whined as I felt his movements begin under the covers. I bit down on my finger, giggling deviously as butterflies erupted in my lower stomach. I didnât think Iâd been this turned on in a long long time- and it was over one of my lifelong friends? I always knew Lance was hot, but not this hot.
âTouch yourself as well, itâs only fair.â He panted out a laugh as my fingers slipped down. The minute I made contact with my clit I felt relief, applying pressure to my throbbing pussy. âFuck.â Lance uttered, mesmerised as his eyes wandered over me, his jaw slightly hung slack as he jittered as his hand moved a little quicker.
âI canât believe Iâm doing thisâŠâ I snickered, hearing him hum out a laugh. âCan I touch you?â He then questioned, making me slightly nervous. âYeah.â God, I wanted him to, the room felt red hot with tension. Lanceâs hand slid over my tits, giving them a squeeze slightly before moving down to my pussy. He didnât waste anytime, I was getting wetter by the second, and when his fingers touched me I let out a soft gasp at the sensation. My best friend was touching me so intimately, the more I watched him, the more shocked I was, it felt fucking great, the adrenaline was pumping inside of me and I felt desperate for Lance. I was trying to keep quiet, and also keep my composure, but Lance was too fucking good at this. âI need to taste you, fuck.â He shifted, sliding to the end of the bed as I covered my mouth with my arm, choking out a moan.
Lance was like a fucking god as he ate me out. His mouth was so warm against my pussy and he physically moaned as he licked and sucked over my clit. âFuck- I canât believe youâre so good at this.â
âYeah⊠you wanna return the favour?â He teased. âYeah.â I seriously whined. âYeah?â He kissed my upper pubic bone as I lifted my head, nodding with a gentle breath. Lance switched our positions around, scraping my hair back gently as I smiled, shyly moving forwards.
âIs this weird?â I asked, his cock literally in my hand. âNo.â He seemed tense. âJust go slow or I might bust too quick.â
âReally?â I slowly tugged on his member, teasing over the smooth skin as he let out a shaky breath. âFuck, donât laugh.â He nudged my shoulder as I giggled, moving down and wrapping my lips around his cock. Hearing Lance moan as I pleasured him with my mouth was something I never expected. It felt so dirty and raunchy, it turned me on even more. The way his arms trembled as he gripped the bed sheets, sliding his fingers through my hair, or when he pleaded for me to slow down.
âFuck, donât cum!â I laughed, swiping my thumb against the corner of my mouth. âYouâre so fucking good at that, oh my godâŠâ he sounded so turned on, his voice was low and sultry, pulling me by the arms on top of him. âI wanna fuck you, can I fuck you?â He was wide eyes, scanning over my own.
âYeah.â I was breathless, reaching for his cock as I eased it inside myself, the two of us letting out a sigh in pleasure. It had been so long since anybody had fucked me, and the fact it was Lance made everything feel 10x better.
âOh my god.â I moaned as I bounced ontop of him. âOh fuck, baby, bounce on my cock, like that.â
âLance.â I whined in response as he hummed, holding onto either side of my hips. âYou feel so good.â His head tipped back with a moan as I lifted my hips, bouncing on my knees on top of his cock.
âSo do you.â I panted, the sound of our skin slapping and the bed creaking filling the room. We continued like that for a few more minutes, Lance pulled me down, our faces inches apart as he fucked into me. âFuck, Iâve needed this so bad.â He groaned, his hips slapping into mine as I let out an open mouthed moan, his hand sliding up the back of my head.
âKiss me, fuck y/n, kiss me.â Lance begged as I pressed my lips against his firmly. It felt so good, the kiss was so heated and desperate, it spurred the sex on further.
âFuck, my legs.â I groaned, âlazy.â Lance teased as I scoffed. âShut up or Iâll stop.â He smirked, flipping us around as the bed creaked under out movements. There was movement outside the other room, footsteps drawing closer and moving past the room as Lance and I stared back to each other in amusement. âSh, sh, sh.â He hushed, looking towards the door. I giggled, bucking my hips up playfully.
âTheyâre going to the bathroom.â He whispered, turning down and laughing, purposefully pinning his hips up against mine to the bed. The movements started again, slowly. I could hear whoever was in the toilet flushing the toilet and the run of the tap, until we heard the bedroom door close again it was a mission to stay quiet. âFuck me properly now, fuck me.â I pleaded with Lance, wrapping my arms over his shoulder as he spread my legs wider, beginning to thrust into me once again. Our quiet moans filled the room, his cock pushed up deep inside of me as his balls slapped against my skin.
âI canât believe weâre doing this, oh my god.â He laughed as I giggled, pulling him in for another kiss. âI wanted you for so long.â He admitted as I let out another moan, muffling it with another kiss. âFuck me, fuck me.â The sex continued, in doggy, spooning, back in missionary, it felt like we were at it for ages.
âCan you cum like this?â Lance questioned, voice on edge as he held me close. âNot like this.â I admitted, he didnât hesitate to move down and pleasure me with his mouth again.
It didnât take long before he was pushing me over the edge, giving me the first ever orgasm from oral ever. I felt like I was in bliss, and after a few more thrusts inside of me, Lance was jerking himself over my stomach and tits, spilling his cum with a bitten back groan.
âFuck, fuck.â The Canadian man tossed his head back, falling forwards on top of me, kissing me deeply as I hummed against his lips, scraping my hand through his messy hair. âYou were so fucking good.â I cooed as he let out a husky hum, continuing to keep his lips against mine.
âSo were you. Fuck, Iâve been in love with you for so longâŠâ his words startled me, a warmth spreading through me as I gasped out. âHave you?â He pushed up on top of me, lingering there as he nodded shyly.
âI think- I think I love you tooâŠâ

Why disinformation experts say the Israel-Hamas war is a nightmare to investigate
The Israel-Hamas conflict has been a minefield of confusing counter-arguments and controversiesâand an information environment that experts investigating mis- and disinformation say is among the worst theyâve ever experienced.
In the time since Hamas launched its terror attack against Israel last monthâand Israel has responded with a weekslong counterattackâsocial media has been full of comments, pictures, and video from both sides of the conflict putting forward their case. But alongside real images of the battles going on in the region, plenty of disinformation has been sown by bad actors.
âWhat is new this time, especially with Twitter, is the clutter of information that the platform has created, or has given a space for people to create, with the way verification is handled,â says Pooja Chaudhuri, a researcher and trainer at Bellingcat, which has been working to verify or debunk claims from both the Israeli and Palestinian sides of the conflict, from confirming that Israel Defense Forces struck the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza to debunking the idea that the IDF has blown up some of Gazaâs most sacred sites.
Bellingcat has found plenty of claims and counterclaims to investigate, but convincing people of the truth has proven more difficult than in previous situations because of the firmly entrenched views on either side, says Chaudhuriâs colleague Eliot Higgins, the siteâs founder.
âPeople are thinking in terms of, âWhose side are you on?â rather than âWhatâs real,ââ Higgins says. âAnd if youâre saying something that doesnât agree with my side, then it has to mean youâre on the other side. That makes it very difficult to be involved in the discourse around this stuff, because itâs so divided.â
For Imran Ahmed, CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), there have only been two moments prior to this that have proved as difficult for his organization to monitor and track: One was the disinformation-fueled 2020 U.S. presidential election, and the other was the hotly contested space around the COVID-19 pandemic.
âI canât remember a comparable time. Youâve got this completely chaotic information ecosystem,â Ahmed says, adding that in the weeks since Hamasâs October 7 terror attack social media has become the opposite of a âuseful or healthy environment to be inââin stark contrast to what it used to be, which was a source of reputable, timely information about global events as they happened.
The CCDH has focused its attention on X (formerly Twitter), in particular, and is currently involved in a lawsuit with the social media company, but Ahmed says the problem runs much deeper.
âItâs fundamental at this point,â he says. âItâs not a failure of any one platform or individual. Itâs a failure of legislators and regulators, particularly in the United States, to get to grips with this.â (An X spokesperson has previously disputed the CCDHâs findings to Fast Company, taking issue with the organizationâs research methodology. âAccording to what we know, the CCDH will claim that posts are not âactionedâ unless the accounts posting them are suspended,â the spokesperson said. âThe majority of actions that X takes are on individual posts, for example by restricting the reach of a post.â)
Ahmed contends that inertia among regulators has allowed antisemitic conspiracy theories to fester online to the extent that many people believe and buy into those concepts. Further, he says it has prevented organizations like the CCDH from properly analyzing the spread of disinformation and those beliefs on social media platforms. âAs a result of the chaos created by the American legislative system, we have no transparency legislation. Doing research on these platforms right now is near impossible,â he says.
It doesnât help when social media companies are throttling access to their application programming interfaces, through which many organizations like the CCDH do research. âWe canât tell if thereâs more Islamophobia than antisemitism or vice versa,â he admits. âBut my gut tells me this is a moment in which we are seeing a radical increase in mobilization against Jewish people.â
Right at the time when the most insight is needed into how platforms are managing the torrent of dis- and misinformation flooding their apps, thereâs the least possible transparency.
The issue isnât limited to private organizations. Governments are also struggling to get a handle on how disinformation, misinformation, hate speech, and conspiracy theories are spreading on social media. Some have reached out to the CCDH to try and get clarity.
âIn the last few days and weeks, Iâve briefed governments all around the world,â says Ahmed, who declines to name those governmentsâthough Fast Company understands that they may include the U.K. and European Union representatives. Advertisers, too, have been calling on the CCDH to get information about which platforms are safest for them to advertise on.
Deeply divided viewpoints are exacerbated not only by platforms tamping down on their transparency but also by technological advances that make it easier than ever to produce convincing content that can be passed off as authentic. âThe use of AI images has been used to show support,â Chaudhuri says. This isnât necessarily a problem for trained open-source investigators like those working for Bellingcat, but it is for rank-and-file users who can be hoodwinked into believing generative-AI-created content is real.
And even if those AI-generated images donât sway minds, they can offer another weapon in the armory of those supporting one side or the otherâa slur, similar to the use of âfake newsâ to describe factual claims that donât chime with your beliefs, that can be deployed to discredit legitimate images or video of events.
âWhat is most interesting is anything that you donât agree with, you can just say that itâs AI and try to discredit information that may also be genuine,â Choudhury says, pointing to users who have claimed an image of a dead baby shared by Israelâs account on X was AIâwhen in fact it was realâas an example of weaponizing claims of AI tampering. âThe use of AI in this case,â she says, âhas been quite problematic.â

shuro notes
upon rereading some of dungeon meshi, I got a better grasp on his role in the story and why hes in the main supporting cast along w kabru (main protag of the suporting cast), namari, and mithrun (main antag of the supp cast) . Contrary to most of the characters disliking eating monsters, he seems to dislike eating, period. In his first appearance he refuses to eat maizurus cooking (with maybe some mermaid eggs sprinkled in..?). His refusal to eat ties into his extreme passivity. He seems to dislike how his father does what he pleases with no regard to how it affects others, and his fear of doing the same seems to play a huge role in how he lets other ppl walk all over him. He ignores his own desires, including his own hunger, because consuming means taking another life. To live means something else has to die, so to desire is to want to take from others. To try to live up to the image of an impassive leader he tries to not participate in this process at all! But bc hes a human being he has to eat, so instead of never taking from others, he starves.
With Falin, I think he realizes there is a way forward where he could be himself and face the ugly realities of what it means to want. To be unabashedly yourself while not hurting everyone in your life. His love comes from a deep place of admiration! I think part of the reason why he's so dead set on saving her is bc he wants to be her equalâshe saved him from his nightmares without a second thought, and part of it is to repay her kindness and to be able to reciprocate it. I think he foils nicely w marcille bc he proposes to her (asks her to choose her future) while marcille doesnt want her to move on from the time they were both children. I think this plays a huge part in why marcille hates him, bc its a reminder of how the time will pass and also he aims to take falin away from her. Interestingly, she also became fairly distant and withdrawn after falin left and they both formed their relationship w her bc dirt and bugs r cool. They both are the party members in Laios squad that fly off the handle the most. Socioeconomically, they both seem to be in the least dire straits and kinda prissy abt things as a result. On re-read something else clicked into place.
After his fight w laios that starts w legit grievances and devolves into him hitting all of laiosâ insecurities like a game of whack-a-mole, shuro says heâs returning to his home country and after that he would never see any of these ppl again. Even before falin got eaten, he knew he was going to have to leave the party but couldnt bring himself to tell them. The way the convo goes, it seems part of the reason why he proposed to her so suddenly is bc he wants to take a part of his time on the island back home with himâi.e. that hes not ready to say goodbye. That the prospect was taken from him so suddenly is why this is the first thing hes asked for or wanted for himself. Interesting parallels to how marcille is not ready to live the rest of her 1000 year life without her friends now, and how falins death is a catalyst that brings her fear to the surfaceâthat for both of them, theyll live the rest of their lives never seeing the ppl they love from this island again. I think part of the reason he is so nasty to laios in particular is bc his entire worldview falls apart at laios' actions
Both desire wise and literally, Shuro is starving. And like a starving person getting his first meal in a long time, I think he gets a little greedyâwhen he gives Laios the bell, he says if the party somehow makes it past thistle, to ring it so they can all escape to the East--where he's headed. Likewise marcilles solution is to bring everyone with her to the 1000 year lifespan. Thats surprisingly childish of both of them! Also not a solution to the problem that suits anyone but themselves. Theres so many solutions to this. He could write. He could call. He could communicate view morse code using that bell instead of attempting to blink in morse code to communicate to laios how he doesnt want to be here. Falin voice: Iâll go visit you, okay? He could set foot on the island again. Honestly. This is so embarrassing for him.
But I think it gets at a core theme of the work. Marcille, Laios, and Shuro all say their greatest desire is to save Falin, but once u get down to it, theyre pretty basic-to not be left alone, to be w monsters who u feel a kinship with, to not have to leave. Namari says she left bc of money but later on goes u must never let go of your fear. Kabru says he wants to get to know laios to prevent utaya from happening again but its much simpler-he wants to be his friend. Our base desires are petty, but they are what keep us going day to day, just like how every living being has to hunger and eat to achieve the goals they set out for.
Lets talk abt his relationship w his retainers.
Hein- theyre childhood friends that have drifted apart in adulthood. By the familiar way she talks about him when hes not around, I think she wants to be close to him again. I think the distance between them is probably intentionally imposed by Shuro bc hes afraid theyll turn out like maizuru and his father. She thinks hes unreliable in a way i think u can only rlly get when u know someone for that long. I wonder if some of that I thought wed always end up together and I want him to like me even tho I dont like him back is wanting that closeness in friendship again
Maizuru- Good god whats happening here. she loves him but also treats him like a child even tho hes a 26 year old man. I think its got fun connections to how kabrus adoptive mom treats him like a child, how marcilles not ready to see falin n herself as adults, thistles relationship w degal. Now these are all relationships where differences in lifespan come into play, but w maizuru n shuro i think u see something real banal in why these elves cant let the ppl in their lives go. She coddles him bc she loves him and tells him at the end he doesn't have to eat the dragon if he doesn't want to, but he rebukes her and says he has to eat it to accept his own failures. So like he doesn't need to be coddled he needs ppl in his life to challenge him so he can grow. And at the end he realizes it tastes good--that even tho his journey had so much conflict and in the end he failed to save falin he made friends! He grew as a person! He starts reaching out to his retainers again! He got to harrass the elf cops and give them migraines! Ties a lot into laios speech to marcille that if falin didnt die they wouldn't have met all these ppl and gotten to eat all this food.
Its wild she put that hag curse on him. Poor kid cant even take a shit in peace. Actually the fact that he couldnt even have that time for himself n grew up constantly feeling watched explains a lot. I think the fact his father nonchalently burnt it and then roasted mochi over it without giving him any explaination made him think oh this is just what everyone goes through and im the weird one for being frightened. And it takes him 20 years to find out that no, its not normal to be haunted by a ghost that chases you with a knife. Pretty apt metaphor for how rules have defined his life without him fully understanding why they're in place. I'll give it a crack tho--it seems like the time period his homelands based on the sengoku period bc its a period of heavy civil war where ppl below upsurped the ppl above them. The strict hierarchy is probably an attempt to exercise social control in an extremely precarious situation.
Also side note: kinda impressive he can do magic when he was six. Probs a combination of maizuru being a talented teacher and his own skill. The fire cast⊠close but no cigar. Also interesting is how the magic he casts seems more elf-y in nature vs maizurus gnomic spirit magic. I wonder if hes his partys black mage- the occupation his party is pointedly missing vs the toudens missing their white mage and kabrus party being well rounded at all points. If so thats hilarious that when the toudens lost their previous mage and everyone was panicking he was like well⊠im just not gonna say anything #OnBrand. I do wonder if the bell he gives laios is his own magic tho.
Also shuros mother is mad at maizuru for being shuros dads mistress but gives her her children to raiseâŠ. Lets unpack this contradiction. Incidentally my tin foil hat theory is Shuros a bastard child. maizuru n his dad have been fucking since 4ever -> one of these children is not legitiment -> probs the one w a strange distance from the rest -> whys shuro succeeding his dad so up in the air when his competitions a 14 and an 8 year old. It's not important tho.
izutsumi + inutade: the fact that he doesnt speak up is his defining moment of moral cowardice. Its tied to his passivity! Hes scared of saying or doing the wrong thing bc hes afraid of hurting others, and he does basically attempt to torch his relationship w laios like it was contaminated w anthrax. Like the first time he tries to be active it went horribly, but his involvement moves the plot forward enormouslyâwith him kabru would not have run into Laios, izutsumi would probably not have been able to run away, he raises the stakes of the journey by indicating they probs cant return to the surface so they have to keep going. And even tho its messy, ugly, and embarassing, he can still pick up the pieces afterwards. Nothing he does is as harmful as his passivity on inutade and izutsumis situations which unequivically, he knows is wrong.
Also w all the references to buying people, I looked it up bc i was like.... like slavery...? it seems to be a reference to retainership as a social caste where people buy your services and as a result you owe the estate your service. You get paid and you have rights, but it seems like you are bound to your station, but depending on the time period japan is supposed to reference, some ppl took on these positions for the sake of social advancement. Regardless, it seems the caste system is also less rigid than stated and ppl can move amongst the positions. There doesn't seem to be an exact cultural equivelent to this, but I think the closest concept is like, being a vassal. I was like if this is slavery this narrative portrays izutsumis time w the nakamotos too ambivenlently and hien going don't you feel any gratefulness for them taking you in makes no sense. But I still think theres something pretty rotten going on here.
Allegedly, as a ninja, you ascend the ranks based on your skill. And yet izutsumi and inutade are at the bottom, and hien, the person that was born into this role, is at the top! Izutsumi and Inutade aren't even considered human in the island of wa--this distinction is given to tall-men only. Theyre both from positions where I feel like the other characters are like they should be grateful they got from one horrible situation to this one thats a system based on merit and skill, but like out of everyone, theyre in the least position of power to say no, to even appreciate what other options there are for them in the world. Like its deeply coercive and wrong. Whats up w shuros father collecting ppl like theyre trophies man. So we can see a system allegedy based on merit is not one at all. Also I feel theres undertones of japanese imperialism with izutsumi being from the equivelent of central asia and having a soul of a child stuffed into her like some kinda of science experiment. Maizurus constantly trying to "civilize" her by teaching her ettiquite such as using your chopsticks. Like the rhetoric of the elves ape pretty directly to imperialistic sentiments, it would not surprise me if theres intentional commentary about japanese imperialism in how izutsumis treated bc japans kinda known in the east for their imperialism... theyve just done it so many times like my parents were like we left our families, our culture, everything we knew behind to go to america.... but we kept our death grudge against japan tho!! #lmfao. Honestly fair. anyways i think theres intentional parallels between how izutsumi is treated as both as a child and a feral animal by maizuru and how the elves treate other races as children that need toys taken away from them. But also how fundementaly, maizurus unsuited to take care of izutsumi bc the tools she has are not suited to izutsumis needs! She has no understanding of izutsumis life. Her hag curse turns from a highly questionable child rearing tactic on shuro to outright a slave collar on izutsumi. Teaching shuro ettiquate and being able to fight gives him the tools to survive in the postion he was born in but is erasing the culture izutsumi grew up in and has been taken away from before she even knew what it meant. Bc she was treated like a circus freak she never got to choose for herself! Tho providing the basic comforts to shuro is a privilage, it's not to izutsumi bc shes never been able to choose what she wants in life. It's why shes set up as shuros narrative foil like so:
This is his pensive look btw its a consistant tic that he lookes like hes glaring when hes deep in thought. Maizurus is both these people's strange mother figure who feeds them in liu of their actual mother. She smothers shuro in love and doesn't let him face actual challenges in life while she intensely disciplines izutsumi. Shuro reacts to this by aquiessing and never making demands of his own while izutsumi constantly refuses to conform. This is probably why he doens't get her.
In the early points of the story, shuro either says leave izutsumi for dead or leave her so she can pursue her freedom. The ambiguity is intentional, because i think in this part of the story we are not supposed to have a good read on him. But it's also because because of his passivity he doesn't do shit for her! So he loses out on having any type of relationship w her even tho they were tormented by the same curse. But crucially he may have learned from this w inutade, who he explicitly aknowledges how her situation is fucked up and her worship of his father is due to an insane power imbalance even tho he has no clue how to talk to her about this. And at the very end of the manga, he gets into an eating contest with her at her prodding as equals. So maybe there's hope he can do better. But I think its important that his relationship w izutsumi is non-existent as a consequence of his passivity despite the things they have in common bc theres no excuse for it. Thier relationship probs deserves its own post.
benichidori - very funny amongst all these complicated relationships these two just straight up dont know each other n r too shy to do so. Is what I was going to say but then I realized benichidori has taken shuros place as hiens closet friend and I wonder if theres any jealousy abt that. But also she shares a lot of traits w shuro and isnt that just interesting:
but even more interesting is her comic:
this is beat for beat shuros conflict w laios.
We only care about one thing: the crushing opinion of everyone in the universe.
I didnt get this on my first read even tho laios was like hes smart but he is incredibly sharp. Hes good at making useful deductions when things dont add up. It rlly reminds u hes trained in espionage.
He keeps kabru on his toes! interesting for such a smooth talker.
He gets kabru to open up about his motivations here and how it affected him and kabru actually shares some of his own feelings on the manner when usually hes holding ppl at arms length. I think him getting a chance to recite this helps prep him to talk to the caneries where notably, hes a lot more clinical about it.
Its nice all three of these ppl can challenge each other and support each other. I think it would be funny if kabru hits em up in the future like do u wanna start some shit for old times sake
able to tell chilchuck was not a child
is afraid of marcille which tbh fantastic call
Everyone else horrified marcille just killed a man but he's like yeah #tracks.
Other things that reminded me hes basically a fixer:
Spends his screentime evading the elf cops.
Refuses to talk to the canaries even under threat of being interegated for 50 years despite threatening laios party multiple times that hes gonna tell on them. instead spends his time going tbh i've never known anything in my life. I'm stupid like that :pensive emoji:
Incredible bit of manipulation on his part-he pretends to be thinking out loud to cast doubt on the canaries judgement to appeal to the ppl in the dungeon that are not motivated by the goodness of their hearts. Reminds me of namaris relatively selfish reasons for leaving the party--needing to get paid, which is a need she was ignoring for far too long and also laios was also not paying proper attn too when namaris in dire straits, and how she says she left the party after the dragon bc she remembered to never forget your fear. That selfishness must also drive you forward. Then he uses that doubt to twist the situation to say all their information could be false so maaaybe the situation is not as dire as they claim and they have other motives (social control). And he pretends hes talking to the caneries but this is directed to everyone else. He and namari pretend to pick a fight so the leader's distracted and everyone else uses this opening to scatter, which causes enough chaos that it breaks the control the elves have. Which is wild bc shuro knows the dungeon is dangerous bc kabru told him about utaya. He also knows laios party can be dangerous w the amount of collateral they cause w the dragon. He puts a lot of ppl in danger that do not need to be even though multiple times he worries about people getting hurt. At his core, tho, I think he wants to see laios and his party again and that selfish desire trumps everything else in this moment. Namari and shuro are so ride or die TBH.
He never shares any of this when not prompted. Except notably at the end he interrupts when ppl think laios might be dead. Which as an aside I think its interesting his biggest contribution to saving falin is not thru his fighting prowess, but through the simple fact he reached out to laios. His compassions his greatest strength. Laios frestrautes him and kabru, and they both punch him and complain that theyll never understand him, but I think they dont have to. Love requires compromiseâit requires eating things you really dont want to, you clash and you hurt each other, but what matters most is that you keep reaching out to one another, that you keep on trying to understand each other. Living requires you to hurt and be hurt, to give and take.
Once again stuck in the middle of an insane and ancient beef
low key funny that he remembered the last time he was here and he was like u know what.... ill just sit this one out....
If my son told me he spent the last week pissing off the elf cops, Id be like yeah thats what the nakamotos are all about TBH
Theres pretty juicy stuff abt how laios is interested in shuro because hes exotic like a monster and his own relationship with being othered by ppl and the fact that shuro is constantly referred to as a foreighner even to ppl hes known and has risked his life for for two years + how to laios monsterhood is a type of freedom while being othered is a type of dehumanization for shuro + how hes trying to show some kind of solidarity to shuro but hes microagressing him thru his attemps + how laios just is being explicitly saying the racist beliefs everyone else implicitly holds just like how mithrun says other races are inferior races which horrifies the rest of the elves but its honestly what they believe but I'm tired and need to think abt it a bit more.
Why do shuro and his party from an island primarily composed of humans and other ppl sometimes not classified as humans but have similair lifespan bc of sociopolitical reasons imitate so many interracial dynamics despite being of the same race? It's to show how marcilles wrong about how the inequality between races exists bc of lifespan differences. Her own fears due to fantastical reasons of being a half-elf and unable to relate any of her insecurities to other ppl are not exclusive to her! Tall-men - Tall-men relationships run along the same lines and have the same conflicts. All the things she fears are things that make her human, that other people have also felt.
in conclusion:
think abt the messiest person u know. Its a man
jk its marcille #feminism

Benâs Big BL Blurb 2: Fall is Finally Here
I am simply too busy with worth, family, other hobbies, and life to write about every show in real time anymore. Iâm sorry to all the Stray Thoughts readers whoâve reached out about whether I would pick that back up, and I simply just do not have the time to do them anymore. Instead, Iâll try to do one of these as often as I can to catch up on things.
First, letâs go over some shows I finished recently that I donât think I wrote much about.
First Note of Love
I was so happy to see Michael back on screen, and I was glad to see that heâs still able to get great chemistry with his co-star. Unfortunately, I donât think this show was very coherent, so I didnât get a lot out of it emotionally. It was a pretty inoffensive watch overall, and thus an easy show to put on without having to work through too much. I liked the work between everyone, and Mei Lei was such a fun character. Probably wonât return to this one, though.Â
Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo
This is probably the show of the year for me. Thereâs so much I loved about this show. I loved that the characters had sex, but were neither rewarded nor punished for it; their sex didnât solve any problems. I also really love how this show explored how childhood trauma expresses in two different kinds of boys, and I love that we got to see a bully reckon with his actions and get closure. I love that this show ended with them being kinda poor, but happy together. I love how messed up they both were about everything. I loved that Juyeong wasnât stupid, and could read what was going on.
I clearly need to write a separate post to unpack everything I felt in this show.
Letâs move on to what Iâm watching currently, in no particular orderâŠstarting with the lesbians, and then the worst BLs.
Apple My Love
Genuinely having fun with this GL. I like how quickly most of the drama plays out. Itâs giving me quite a bit of secondhand embarrassment, but I like the characterizations in this show. This new production house brought us Knock Knock, Boys! and Monster Next Door this year. We need to keep an eyes on them.Â
Haunted Hearts
Iâm so fascinated by Oxin Films teaming up with Regal Entertainment. The leads are very attractive, but the cinematography is really boring. Iâm trying to stay invested, but itâs kind of a sleepy watch. Also amused that they started airing a ghost romance right after Halloween ended. Iâve kind of moved on emotionally from the season.
My Damn Business
This show could be good, but itâs not. I struggled with episode 5 because our lead looked more relaxed and happier with his senior than the guy heâs getting into a romance with. Thereâs something missing here in this one, but I canât exactly put my finger on it. I think itâs primarily a side effect of the short run time, but I think the bossâs interest isnât landing properly for the employee to respond to.Â
Eccentric Romance
This show could be good, but itâs not. Still, I am obsessed with a murder mystery being the primary source of confusion between our leads. I was willing to forgive this show a lot of its rough edges, but it failed to handle the turn from friendship to sexual/romance really well. I feel like our guys just started dating and having sex, and Iâm a bit frustrated that they didnât talk about it really at all, particularly since this show features two different languages spoken on screen. Genuinely looking forward to seeing how this one finishes.Â
See Your Love
Iâm not sure this show is exactly working that well, but everyone is very pretty and Iâm having a decent time watching it. I like the way Shao Peng stands up for himself, and I like that nothing thatâs happened has been totally unbelievable or unreasonable (at least with the mains). Iâll be curious how the hard of hearing and deaf viewers respond to this one once itâs complete.Â
Love is Like a Poison
This show is actually so funny. I love that Shiba is in his own lawyer genre separate from everyone else, and I really like how the two of these guys have become a team. Iâm curious how they manage to resolve the scamming next week, but this has been the most unexpected dynamic of the year.Â
Love in the Air: Koi no Yukon
MAME won this year, yâall. We all have complicated feelings about her, but sheâs secured a loving adaptation from a Japanese team thatâs put solid effort into bringing her characters to life. Every character feels correct compared to their Thai counterpart we saw on screen, and thatâs a strong sign that the writing behind MAMEâs work is strong, even if we all have issues with the way she tackles certain themes. Iâm really impressed with this adaptation, and really like this version of Rain.I also feel like this show is doing a better job blending the forthcoming couple focus shift.
Our Youth
We just got this show, but damn does it feel sharp! Iâm always going to be a sucker for a cinephile character, and Iâm so compelled by the way Minase is drawn to Hirukawa. The scene in episode 2 where Minase has to leave Hirukawaâs house might be one of the most impressive sequences weâve had in a while, requiring a great deal of choreography and effort from the actors and the camera crew to pull off, and Iâm excited to see how these characters split and then come back together.Â
Smells Like Green Spirit
Let me just say that I need another Abe Alan appearance when he isnât playing a character doing horrible things to his students. Iâve enjoyed meditating on the 90s with this show and what that era felt like. Iâve liked how the show has tried to focus on how different parents (especially the moms) have responded to their kids coming to terms with themselves. Iâve also really enjoyed the friendship thatâs grown between Mishima and Kirino. Iâm struggling with Yumeno a lot, because Iâm really not a friend of bully romances. Still, I feel like this is one of those shows Iâll remember for a long time because of its focus on the 90s.Â
Blue Canvas of Youthful Days
I think @lurkingshan covered reactions to episode 5 and episode 6 better than I could, and I loved @twig-tea giving context for the film history moment in episode 6. I remember screaming into the chat for friends to show up for this when I got to that moment. This show has two great pairs of dynamics going on that mirror well. Itâs got such a strong handle on its charactersâ motivations and how they would respond to the actions from each other. Itâs probably the tightest thing Iâm watching now, backed by extremely dialed-in performances. I will be thinking about Qi Lu organizing his potential first kiss with Qin Xiao, and how unapologetic heâs been about the entire affair. Heâs being selfish here, but I kinda like it. Iâm so thankful that we are somehow still getting this show, because goddamn do the Chinese actors deliver on chemistry sometimes.
Interview With the Vampire Season 2
I finished this with a friend last week, and holy fuck is this show still so, so good. We watch a lot of gay romance because of BL, and I am having so much fun watching the show about gay divorce. I loved the time we spent in Paris, Danielâs shifting role in the narrative, and the new insights we got into Lestat this season. I will miss Claudia so much, and I have to give a standing ovation to Delainey Hayles stepping into the role of Claudia and doing the damn thing this season. I just love seeing my little fucked up gay people torment each other on screen.
I'm still thinking about Louis and Lestat reuniting in a hurricane after Claudia derided this as yet another chapter in their stormy romance.
Dropped Shows
Unfortunately, everyone canât win. Some of these shows are just too long for me to keep up with them, and oftentimes I get bored. Iâve currently dropped:
Lovesick 2024 - I may go back. Weâll see
Jack & Joker - Itâs just too long, and they just killed Jennie and a kid. Iâm good.
Fourever You - Iâm bored with Earth always playing this character type.
Pluto - Namtam and Film are beautiful, but this looks too messy right now.
Every You, Every Me - Wasnât intrigued after episode 1, but the commentary may draw me back.
Kidnap - Ohm is not enough to keep me invested in this show.Â
Uncle Unknown - How did they make a 6 minute show feel slow?
Iâm genuinely not trying to be harsh to Thai shows out here, but I just do not have the time to keep up with all of them when theyâre this long and dragging.
Thanks for stopping by, and let me know if thereâs something I missed that I should check out.

Union Politics and the Karrakin Trade Baronies, or, Why Union Lets the KTB Do All That
Let me open this post with a small disclaimer: what I am saying here is not necessarily meant to be argumentative, nor is it targeted at anyone in particular. Lancer is a TTRPG setting, and as such is infinitely malleable in terms of setting alterations in order to suit you and your playgroup. This behavior is explicitly encouraged in the core rulebook and I encourage you to do it yourself, in order to better set the limits of what you might want to engage with in the course of play.
However, it has been my experience that it is usually best to understand the material that you're bending when you do so and I'm not entirely sure that some people do- an understandable problem to have when you do not just consume guidebooks in one sitting or fixate on the particularly fucked politics of some aspects of the setting. Of particular concern to me is the Karrakin Trade Baronies (henceforth the KTB,) one of two parts of the setting to get its own dedicated guidebook and the subject of the forthcoming module Shadow of the Wolf. It's a repressive aristocratic state that is home to some of the worst sanctioned atrocities in the setting, but also its a part of Union, so why does the "utopian" Union let them do that?
It's simple: the KTB is a vassal state in an extractive colonial relationship. This is text.
(Field Guide to the Karrakin Trade Baronies, p. 3)
The long and short of it is this- the KTB's initial encounters with Union were short and violent, as these encounters were with an expansionist Second Committee who coveted the KTB's rich resources. The first of these wars featured SecComm nearly securing an incredibly quick victory via an initial refusal to engage in ship combat in favor of simply barraging civillian populations instead:
(Field Guide to the Karrakin Trade Baronies p. 33. I recommend reading this entire section actually, as I find few Lancer sourcebooks willing to go this into detail about single events- the Battle of Kantus Void (starting p. 32) is described in great detail and is frankly quite horrific)
Only to retreat at the last minute in order to deal with the Deimos event. Â (e.g. the emergence of Ra on Deimos, followed by the First Contact Accords. One of the ramifications of this is that Union gets access to blinkspace and NHPs, which one might consider a Big Deal technologically.) The second war was won via an overwhelming technological advantage from SecComm as a result of the Deimos event , to the point where the Second Union-Karrakin War gets scarcely a paragraph in the book, and the result is the New Prosperity Agreement, as follows:
(Field Guide to the Karrakin Trade Baronies, p. 34.)
So: Union gets a treaty-guarantee that the KTB has no military fleet, a regular supply of the resources mined in the KTB (explicitly to fund the growth of Union Core), and the KTB gets the Dawnline shore, reparations, and the guarantee that Union will not depose their government. This treaty remains on the books with the transition to ThirdComm, because the demand for resources did not end with the end of SecComm:
(Field Guide to the Karrakin Trade Baronies p. 36. Note the term âprintersâ here, this is not Star Trek, there are no replicators, your mech was built with raw material that was probably sourced in part or in full from the KTB.)
That is to say: why has the Third Committee allowed the KTB to continue doing what it does? Because 1. There is a treaty saying protecting the existing government and specifically the nobility 2. That treaty is the thing that feeds its shipyards, printers, and the resource demands of its core worlds 3. The First Utopian Pillar says "All should have their material needs fulfilled," so any action that threatens Union's supply lines is viewed as a threat to Union's ability to uphold the Utopian Pillars:
(Field Guide to the Karrakin Trade Baronies p. 36, this one is actually a bit more of a stretch but this is the only thing I can imagine "Union relies on the New Prosperity Agreement to... uphold its principles" refers to.)
You may be asking a few questions.
Does this make absolve the KTB/make their existing structure okay?
Absolutely not. The existence of the structure of landed nobility over an ignoble population is a power structure that itself produces the problems like those seen on Free Sanjak- this is something I see a lot of existing ink spilled over and I think this is made explicitly clear just about everywhere. However, I think it is important to understand that the conditions that the Ungratefuls fight against are those involved in resource extraction, and those are ones that they identify as being ultimately in service to union, as Tyrannocleave says:
(Field Guide to the Karrakin Trade Baronies p. 82)
In fact, even the core guidebook notes that the Ungratefuls tend to regard Union as hostile for these reasons:
Lancer Core Rulebook p. 415, notably the edition that contains the GM rules and setting notes. All other citations from this source are the same.)
They also will target Union openly:
(Lancer Core Rulebook p. 415, paragraph truncated due to page limit in source, the opening lines were "Beyond this, Ungrateful activity ranges in scope from the local to the interstellar. Some cells focus on direct...)
The actual politics of the Ungratefuls are their own discussion, though, and this post is far too bloated as-is.
The same conditions that incentivize resource extraction as a precondition of survival also incentivize existing power structures in the KTB to sanction and allow the kinds of abuse on Free Sanjak. Resource limitations (also noted in the early pages of the KTB guidebook as growing) in the KTB are not a result of lack of material but a demand for export, and those limitations are never going to be felt by the nobility, who will inevitably guarantee that they will be fed, but rather the people.
That is to say- the conditions of the nobility existed prior to Union, but the continued abuses are informed by the Treaty obligations imposed by Union, and this is something that the Ungratefuls textually understand.
Is Union doing nothing?
As shown in that second to last rulebook excerpt, also no. However, the actions Union is taking are broadly informed by the necessity of maintaining plausible deniability. Union is funding and maintaining the Ungratefuls, but are unwilling to put pressure on what is an unstable larger diplomatic situation:
(Field Guide to the Karrakin Trade Baronies p. 81)
That is to say- their larger aid to the Republican Houses (Water and Dust) filters into support for the Ungratefuls, and the UIB hires free agents to run support for them in order to make Union's hands in the conflict seem clean. However, this does not mean any sort of direct intervention by any forces that have clear ties to ThirdComm, as they are unwilling to jeopardize diplomatic ties to the KTB writ large. Or, in short: Union Navy and the DoJ/HR are hands off for this one.
Wait, isn't ThirdComm supposed to be utopian?
I read Union as being a government with a complicated history that seeks to act in the direction of Utopianism. I think that what is textually true about the KTB and the way Union interacts with it, however, is proof of how complicated that project can be. To sanction the KTB is to remove the resource flows that make the Union Core a society that can easily uphold the First Pillar. To maintain this relationship is to continue the colonial legacy of SecComm and continue tacitly endorsing both the aristocratic, exploitative present in the KTB and the extraction that it now seeks to maintain. The compromise that Union has come to is to accept the resources while funding freedom fighters, a position that I wholeheartedly disagree with as a citizen under American Empire who finds that this "compromise" uncomfortably echoes similar situations in the real world, but I think that the inclusion of this in the setting serves to pose the question: what should be done, when you are building Utopia on still breathing body of Empire?
There's a larger discussion to be had here about Lancer as a Utopian setting, but that demands a word count that I think this post has no space for. Suffice it to say- I think that discussions of the KTB should consider this context more, because I think that this is a question the setting is asking, and it is one worth engaging.

Welcome to another round of W2 Tells You What You Should See, where W2 (me) tries to sell you (you) on something you should be watching. Today's choice: æČæ”·/Tomb of the Sea/Sand Sea.

Sand Sea is the 2018 installment of the DMBJ/Lost Tomb franchise, which tells the story of the search for an ancient desert city, a fight against a secretive assassin family, the raiding of more than a couple tombs, and a whole bunch of other action-packed bullshit.
Have you ever watched an anime adaptation that outran the as-yet-incomplete manga it was adapting, necessitating it throw together a largely befuddling ending based on the available clues? That's Sand Sea. At time of production, only ~75% of the Sand Sea novel had been written. As I am making this post, that's still all of the Sand Sea novel that has been written. I finished watching the show and had a lot of questions about its loose ends. I read the book. It didn't help.
So, I'm not going to try and summarize the story, much less try to sell you on the show on the strength of the plot. What I am going to try and do is convince you it's a good time anyway.
As I mentioned earlier, it's part of a larger franchise, but you shouldn't let that stop you from diving in here. Most of the DMBJ shows and books are narrated by Wu Xie, the series' special little birthday boy. Sand Sea takes a different tack -- your main POV characters are completely new to the world of the tombs, meaning that the show explains things to you while it's explaining things to them. Wu Xie's still a major character, but you're seeing him through the eyes of a befuddled teenager who wasn't even supposed to be here today.

I'm going to give you five reasons to watch this series, and all five of them are relationships. I'm pitching it to you this way because, as was the case in my rec for Reunion (one of the other tomb-raiding dramas), I'm assuming you have zero familiarity with DMBJ, which means that any appeals to the larger franchise or its twists and turns will have no impact. Instead, I am here to sell this to you on the strength of character interactions. If you're interested in what the characters are doing, the plot will come.
1. Dudes Rock
The aforementioned teenager narrator is Li Cu, a too-cool-for-school underachiever who lives with his abusive father and has no direction in life. He comes with his two best (and only) friends: earnest pushover Su Wan and neighborhood bully Yang Hao.

They're a trio of problem children who cannot succeed by the metrics of society at large: Li Cu and Yang Hao are both from family circumstances that have hampered their ability to perform academically, while Su Wan, bless his heart, is just not that bright. They do, however, all do well when put in situations that play to their strengths and given appropriate mentorship. (Alas that all of their mentors are terrible people; see point 4.)
They're set up as an intentional next-generation parallel to the Iron Triangle, which is the term DMBJ uses for Wu Xie and his two closest people. Normally, the Iron Triangle would be the core of a DMBJ story -- but since that threesome is broken by Circumstances at the moment, these boys become the substitute triad whose friendship is one of the main bonds holding the narrative together.

They have such teenage boy dynamics, it's great. They're stupid about girls and alcohol and money and homework and all the other things teen boys are stupid about, while also being stupid enough to get themselves entangled in shadowy international conspiracies. Huge parts of the plot are fueled entirely by their dumbass decisions. But they also barely have any competent adult supervision in their lives, so you know, when you're seventeen and basically feral, renting a warehouse so you can beat a bunch of frozen snakes to death actually sounds like a good solution to the problem at the time.
It's not all comedy, though. Li Cu and Yang Hao in particular are deeply traumatized young men even before the story starts, and events of the series make it worse. They're definitely the "feelings are for girls!" type of young men, and they need Su Wan there as their eternally bippy buffer. When he's not, they can get mean.
What's also charming about this trio is that they're all pretty darn straight. In a franchise chock full of (unintentional?) homoeroticism, these three manage to keep their platonic dude dynamics pretty platonic. I mean, I myself come at most things with slash-colored glasses on, and even I'm of the opinon that they're befuddled heterosexuals struggling with how the entire tomb-raiding industry's gay. And even if you assume everyone in this entire show is straight, these boys are still going to get a bunch of real-time lessons in how to love other people, whether they like it or not!

So if you like a Teen Boy Squad of goobers who don't want to admit they're close or have emotions or anything like that, right up until they're all each other have, this may be just the thing for you.
2. The Only Good Het in the Tombs
DMBJ is not known for its high-quality heterosexual romance, to put it mildly. Most of the time, it makes the smart decision to not even try. When it does, you mostly wish it hadn't.
Therefore, you cannot imagine how shocked I was to find myself falling head-over-heels for the incredibly weird canonical love story between horny hot mess Dr. Liang Wan and emotionally constipated 80-year-old virgin and arsonist Zhang Rishan.

Their relationship goes a little something like this: He needs something from her, so he contrives a plan to ask her out. She declares him her boyfriend. He continues the relationship in order to continue getting things from her. She thinks he's hot, so she's fine with that. He warns her that continuing their relationship will involve messing with some very bad members of the Tomb-Raiding Industrial Complex. She's like, again, you're incredibly hot, so that's not a problem. He makes her memorize maps and sends her to a desert. She dresses up like him and pepper-sprays him. And somewhere in the midst of all that, he falls for her and she gets sick of his shit, and they wind up for-real dating as equals.

Part of what's so delightful about their relationship is how awful they are to one another. It'd be bad if that awfulness were one-sided, but man, they each give as good as they get. He's heartless and exploitative, and she's neurotic and insecure. She makes constant demands of him that he's almost too confused by to refuse, and he keeps putting her in situations no sane person should want to be part of. He comes from a cutthroat world of complete bastards, while she wears her heart on her sleeve whether she wants to or not. They're extremely good for one another, because he trusts her competencies and is going to make her demonstrate every one of them, while one of her chief skills is calling him on his bullshit.

It is at this point I need to sing the praises of Liang Wan, hottest of the hot messes. She's one of the principal POV characters for the novel, where she's just as boy-crazy (though for a different boy, because Zhang Rishan's not in this book) and just as far in over her head. The adaptation has absolutely done her character justice. What makes Liang Wan so charming to me is how much she absolutely refuses to let herself be stopped by being completely out of her depth. She doesn't know what the hell is going on most of the time, but fuck it, she's rolling with it. She's just also going to be applying moisturizer and anti-aging serum the entire time, because you know what, sometimes when your whole world is falling apart around you, the one thing you can count on is your skincare routine.

Zhang Rishan is surrounded by people so cool, butter doesn't melt in their mouths. He can be balls-out naked in front of them without batting an eyelash. It is her thirsty disaster charms alone that have set fire to his frozen heart. I love them to bits.
3. Enemies to ... ???

This is Sand Sea's Wu Xie. You're not going to like him at first, because he spends the first several episodes tormenting a teen who only mildly seems to deserve it. What you find out as the show goes on is that Wu Xie is having a bad time -- more than that, he's having a straight-up bad decade. He has taken a lot of psychic damage and decided to cope with it by being absolutely insane. He's a bitch with no sense of self-preservation living in constant gremlin mode. He is no longer under the active supervision of his husbands, and he's going to make that everyone else's problem.
The show chooses to start out by inflicting Wu Xie on a bunch of strangers through an arc that's bizarre, lengthy, and mostly completely unrelated to the larger plot. It does introduce a few elements that will matter, though, and one of them is Su Nan.

When Su Nan appeared as the badass head of a mercenary outfit, I was braced for one (or both) of two things to happen. Thing one, I figured she'd die or otherwise leave the narrative after the first arc, which made me not want to get attached to her, if she wasn't going to stick around. Thing two, I was all but certain the show was going to try and make her Wu Xie's love interest, which made me make such a face, because [see last point].
Neither happens. Su Nan is still around in the final episode, and what she becomes to Wu Xie is much, much more interesting.

They're not friends. They're never friends. They can't be friends, because they absolutely can't trust one another. Except sometimes they have to trust one another, and in return they have to allow themselves to be trustworthy.
In the last relevant chapter or so of the novel, Wu Xie gets his throat cut and shoved off a cliff ... and because the novel isn't finished, we have no idea why that happened or who did it. The drama decides that when he goes over that cliff this time, throat unslit, Su Nan needs to go with him. This means they spend much of the later part of the series depending on one another for survival, getting real vulnerable, sharing trauma, and occasionally fucking one another over anyway, because they are both bad and untrustworthy people.
And they're ... kinda into one another? But because it's not textual, it winds up being great. If the show had tried to write their romance, I would have hated it. Instead, it chooses to leave things fraught and unspecified, with the two of them obviously having a lot of feelings but not even knowing themselves what all those feelings are, much less how to react appropriately to them. That is delicious. Pour that right into my mouth.

I also choose to interpret Su Nan as being transfemme (complimentary), if only because that's the most charitable explanation for her dedication to keeping her tits out and her lipstick game sharp even in wilderness conditions.
4. This Man Should Not Be Trusted With Children
As I mentioned before, all members of the Teen Boy Squad wind up paired with adult men who act as their mentors. Li Cu and Wu Xie are the main duo, since they're the main character of this show and the main character of the entire franchise, respectively. Yang Hao winds up in an even more abusive dynamic with a bitch of a man who takes advantage of Yang Hao's capacity for rage. But precious baby Su Wan is lucky enough to be adopted by, well...

If you read my rec for Reunion, you will recognize him as the guy I called "this giant fucking loser" with all the affection in the world. Hei Xiazi is both the worst and the best, which makes him the perfect man to take care of the tender soul that is Su Wan.

Su Wan's a poor little rich boy who is happy to be bullied by his friends, because it means he has friends! He's a dipshit because he's sheltered by his family wealth, and he's also a dipshit because he'd be a dipshit no matter how much money he had. He needs someone to kick his ass in a way that builds him back up again and helps him make the transition from doormat to functional adult.
The circumstances that bring these two together are so batshit, they're not worth recounting here. Suffice it to say that as one adventure arc ends, Hei Xiazi is tasked with taking Su Wan home. Su Wan expresses interest in whatever Hei Xiazi's whole deal is, and Hei Xiazi responds by offering (in a roundabout way) lessons in what exactly his whole deal is.

Hei Xiazi is a terrible teacher, but he's a perfect teacher for Su Wan, who is the kind of boy who would go find the nearest dictionary if you told him the word "gullible" wasn't there. They're preciously weird at one another. The work so well together because Su Wan believes the best of everything, which leads him to see right past the parts of Hei Xiazi that other people (correctly) find inscrutable and offputting. With Hei Xiazi's questionable guidance, Su Wan finds for the first time in his naive, privileged life a goal for himself that is both achievable and worth the effort.

Later books give evidence that all three of the boys eventually go to work for Hei Xiazi, which I think is great, especially since he is somehow the least toxic and terrible of all the mentor characters. ...Man, though, that bar is low. It's a miracle anyone in DMBJ survives into adulthood.
It's also cute to think about how the boys are no doubt context-appropriately homophobic, because it's so easy to picture their respective reactions to finding out that their strong, terrible male role models are queer. Cue Li Ci and Yang Hao's respective no-homo freakouts, while Su Wan just has a million slightly offensive but ultimately well-meaning questions about how bisexuality works.

And I'm just going to say, if you watched the Untamed and loved Xue Yang? You owe it to yourself to see that actor suddenly become the sweetest little butterscotch muffin ever. ...Yes, if you didn't recognize him earlier, that's Wang Haoxuan, and he turns in an incredible comic performance here. Su Wan is consistently one of the funniest characters onscreen. The bit with the saxaphone kills me dead.
Anyway, unlike the first three relationships I've talked about here, this is one you have to wait a good long while for. Su Wan shows up in the first episode, Hei Xiazi appears about a dozen or so episodes later, but it takes their storylines much longer to cross. It's worth the wait, though, knowing that eventually you'll get to see these two weirdos bounce merrily off one another.
5. Everybody Loves Pangzi

This is the Iron Triangle I mentioned earlier. Obviously there's Wu Xie in the middle. The perfect boy in the hoodie is Xiao Ge, who is at the time of this series slightly stuck in what's basically a giant time-lock safe, so you're only ever going to see him in flashbacks. (Xiao Ge is trapped, so you can't have Xiao Ge.) And then, over there on the left is the man whose nickname translates to "fatty," Wang Pangzi.
Hold on to your butts, because I am now going to wax poetic about how much I love this fictional man.

Pangzi is the best. The best. He's funny. He's kind. He's got terrible taste in men and only slightly less terrible taste in women. He's a gentleman. He's the party shock absorber. He's prone to making things explode. He's impeccably dressed. He's charmingly superstitious. He's not subtle. He's got an excitable little stammer and an atrocious Beijing accent. He's a flexible fat man. He's the most fuckable person onscreen no matter who's onscreen with him.
He's also usually the DMBJ everyman character, except Sand Sea has a ton of everyman characters for a change, so he winds up filling the role of a badass insider instead. His job is basically to hold down the fort while Xiao Ge's indisposed and Wu Xie's off being insane. In the absence of both his beloveds, Pangzi's going to do what needs to be done, and he's going to be incredibly hot while he's doing it.

Usually, DMBJ shows serve up a huge amount of Pangzi and Wu Xie interaction. Sand Sea only puts them in the same room near the very end -- but they're collaborating throughout. In fact, the only way the whole story works is if they're basically so much in each other's back pockets that they can function as a single unit even across great distances. The record will show that I read them as husbands -- but more importantly, they're good friends who understand and trust one another completely. As much as it pains me that they're apart for basically the entire thing, they're never really apart, you know?
However, because Wu Xie is physically elsewhere for so much of the show, Sand Sea provides a unique chance to see Pangzi interacting on his own with other characters. Wu Xie is the special little boy who always takes up all the oxygen in the room -- and of course Pangzi doesn't begrudge him this, because Pangzi loves him. Without Wu Xie around, though, we get to watch all the other relationships Pangzi has cultivated over the years.
One of the best is with Xie Yuchen, a.k.a. Xiao Hua. In other series, we see the two interact, but only in the context of having Wu Xie around. Sand Sea presents us with a little window into what is clearly a longstanding friendship. From the tiny bit we get of their interactions, it's obvious they hang out on a pretty regular basis. They're chilling and having spa dates while their husbands are out there getting sandy and fighting snakes, proving that these two urbanites are absolutely the brains of their respective marriages.
...Hold up a second,
I hear you say,
IS this show actually gay? Because you keep using words like "husbands" and talking like it's intentionally, onscreen, boys-kissing-boys gay.
On the one hand, no.
On the other hand: Is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid gay? Textually, taking it at face value, and especially considering the context in which it was made, no, it is absolutely not gay, nor was it meant to be gay. But when you step back and realize everything it's doing, you kind of can't avoid the really romantic implications. Maybe Butch and Sundance never smooch, maybe they don't even want to, but they're each other's other halves. We would instantly recognize what they are if one of them were a lady. In a narrative setting where gayness is unthinkable, nothing they can do can be gay, which loops around to making everything kinda gay, and ... look, I'm just saying, if Pangzi were a woman, we'd know immediately what she is to Wu Xie (and holy fuck she would be so hot). If Xiao Hua were as female as the opera characters he plays, we'd have no questions about her relationship to Hei Xiazi. Keep everything beat for beat, line for line the same, and there'd be no missing it.
This is something you get a lot with stories about men written by men, this unintentional homoeroticism from male authors who don't realize their misogyny has actually poisoned them against heterosexuality. Remember what I said earlier about DMBJ's regrettable het? So much of it stems from the assumption that getting a girl and a boy together will inevitably to romantic feelings from at least one of them, so there's no reason to bother spending time giving either of the participants any actual reasons to like one another. (Sand Sea does this too! Just with a character I haven't mentioned here, because I'm trying to talk about the good dynamics.) This kind of thinking treats women not as people, but as as basically interchangeable desirable objects. But men are people, which means the male characters' feelings are worth discussing in the narrative! So what you get is these well-developed, intimate relationships between men described in loving detail, sat right next to perfunctory heterosexual couplings -- and we're supposed to believe that one is romantic and one is not based solely on the genders of the participants? Yeah, no, I call bullshit.
And -- if you'll permit me to loop back to the boys for a minute -- we now have a model for how a straight Iron Triangle would behave, and it is not the way the actual Iron Triangle members are about one another. Those teens love one another in a way that is fierce and strong and not what Wu Xie, Pangzi, and Xiao Ge have going. Maybe it could become that, but it's not now. It's not better or worse now for being what it is, but it is different, and it makes by contrast some things very clear (and very queer).
So that is why I feel justified in referring to them as husbands and will continue to do so despite the lack of explicit textual support.
Anyway, back to Pangzi!
Where were we? Right, Xiuxiu!

Pangzi's always at his best when he gets to be a knight for someone he cares about. This time around, that's Huo Xiuxiu, who who only shows up after you've met several of her matriarchal family's other members, all of whom would be at home in a Tank Full Of Dangerous Ladies. Xiuxiu is not a fighter like they are, but she does have an object that means everyone's out to get her, and as such she relies on her Pangzi to keep her safe while she's trying to survive the fucked-up games her family is playing.
And Pangzi clearly loves it. He absolutely thrives on being the big brother/bruiser figure for her. He loves how cool it makes him look to her. He doesn't have Wu Xie around to be a tank for, so he's going to tank for her. In fact, he's even going to bring in reinforcements to help him do it. (What's the deal with the cute Tibetan boy? Look, shh, just appreciate that you've got a cute Tibetan boy.)

Then there's his dealings with the rest of the Tomb-Raiding Industrial Complex, who are a bunch of shady dudes with impressive family pedigrees and expensive suits, all of whom are trying to play twelve-dimensional chess with one another. There's going to be lots of names dropped, of families and of individuals, and the show is going to act like you're supposed to be impressed. And if you're familiar with DMBJ canon, yeah, you could be impressed! Or you could be like Pangzhi, who rolls up in his amazing Holstein shirt, not giving a single fuck what any of these rich bastards think about him.
This is actually some character development for Pangzi, who has in the past been cowed (pun unintended) by the wealthy, mostly due to his own financial situation. That stage of his life is over now. Honey badger has ceased to care. The cool, pretty people are going to try and give him shit, and he is impervious to it. You better believe the Iron Triangle trashed this fancy restaurant the last time they were in here, and if you give Pangzi half the chance, he'll fucking do it again.
No wonder Zhang Rishan likes him. A pair of little firestarters.

Don't let me oversell you on how much Pangzi is in Sand Sea, because he's not. There's maybe a dozen of the 52 episodes that have any Pangzi content, and he's only in small parts of those episodes. Pangzi is a rare and precious event, like an eclipse. Cherish the Pangzi moments and all the wonderful interactions contained within.
caveat: You call that an ending?
Buddy, if you'd seen how most other DMBJ series end, you wouldn't be asking me that. But because I'm assuming you haven't: Yes, I call that an ending, because it actually attempts to do a winddown and conclusion, instead of just wandering off on a cliffhanger. The ending isn't wholly satisfying, but it is an ending. There is a narrative, and that narrative concludes. Does the conclusion make sense and tie up all the loose ends? Absolutely not! But it does follow basic story structure and resolve the action semi-competently.
As I said about the sweet disaster that is Psych Hunter (which was also directed by the guy who did Sand Sea!), I think knowing in advance that an ending sucks makes the ending suck less. It removes the disappointment factor and lets you enjoy what is there, instead of making you grumpy about what isn't. No, you're never going to understand a lot of things. That means whatever you want to be true can be true. The book is unfinished. The series is nonsense. Canon has no hold on you. You are free.

As compensation, here's a picture of Xiao Ge without his shirt on.
Are you feeling like it's Tomb Time?
There are a couple places you can get this one! Try Viki, WeTV, this YouTube playlist (which is missing the first episode for some reason), or this YouTube playlist (which has the whole thing). Note that subtitles vary in quality from place to place. The YouTube versions also have the bizarre, amazing in-character commercials, and it's up to you if that's a plus or a minus for your viewing experience.
I love this bonkers show. It is balls-to-the-wall weird, to a point that will make you question the translation. I got to the part where Zhang Rishan explains that ancient people worshipped fish with snakes in their eyebrows, caught the fish, took out the snakes, and implanted the snakes in their own human eyebrows -- and I thought, surely that's not what he's actually saying. Nope! The subtitles are accurate. It's the show that's off its rocker.
Anyway, once you've watched Sand Sea, scroll down to the bottom of my rec post for Reunion and find out how you can get even deeper into said tombs! Trust me, there's a lot down here.
As those other posts would indicate, this would not be my first choice for how to get into DMBJ. It is, however, how a fair number of people have gotten into DMBJ, so what the hell do I know! Or maybe this post has convinced you that Sand Sea is worth watching, but you'd rather build up to it than go into it raw. That works too! Whenever you get to it, it'll be here: under a bunch of sand, tattooed and inexplicable, and extremely gay whether it knows it or not.

Go to the desert, they said. Find Gutongjing, they said. Solve the mystery, they said. Fuck it, we nap.

Some things associated with New Age that aren't inherently bad
Since this blog can get kinda heavy sometimes, and because there's some people out there who think that anything remotely adjacent to New Age is evil and must be banished forever, I figured I'd write something on elements it includes that aren't necessarily bad.
Its general concept of God and divinity
New Age beliefs typically posit that God, or Source, effectively split itself into many different souls in order to have different kinds of experiences. There's nothing wrong with this model of divinity in itself, since it doesn't by itself imply anything hateful or suggest any kind of action that might lead to harm. Where it gets messed up is when people start claiming that if you're suffering, it's because you deliberately chose to have this kind of experience before you incarnated. That's just victim blaming, and it's wrong.
Energy healing
Energy healing on its own is a harmless practice, and many people do report feeling better for doing it. Dismissing energy healing as inherently bad in itself would be like dismissing prayer for recovery as inherently bad. It's really not. The problem is always when people start believing they should only rely on energy healing or prayer, or fall into the belief that pharmaceutical medicine is sinful or an evil conspiracy.
Listening to relaxing tones
No, those "healing frequencies" probably won't cure any serious ailments. But that doesn't mean they can't make you feel more relaxed or help you focus. You don't have to subscribe to any specific belief system to listen to these audios.
Glossolalia
The New Age practice of speaking in light languages is a form of glossolalia, which basically involves relaxing and speaking whatever sounds immediately come to you. Doing it can be cathartic and relaxing, and you don't need to subscribe to any specific belief system to do it.
Tarot reading
Reading tarot cards doesn't require subscribing to any specific spiritual belief system. Nor do you even need to be spiritual at all; you can read tarot cards with the perspective that what you're doing is prompting your own mind to consider things from new angles.
Meditation
Meditation is known to have beneficial effects, and doing it doesn't require subscribing to any particular belief system. Yes, it's a problem when somebody subscribes meditation as a cure-all, or use it as a form of spiritual bypassing, but that's a problem with the teacher, not the practice itself.
Eating more plant foods
Provided you don't have any allergies or intolerances, eating more fruits, vegetables, nuts, and the like usually isn't a bad idea. The problem with New Age is when it effectively moralizes food by decreeing certain foods "high vibrational" or "low vibrational," or when it's pushing conspiracy theories about modern processed food items being intentionally poisoned to block our psychic abilities or keep us dependent on the healthcare system. And obviously, it's appallingly ableist to tell someone that they could cure a chronic illness by switching to an all-natural vegan diet or something.
Belief in aliens
It's a big universe, and it's not unreasonable to think we're not alone in it, and that maybe there's beings who are observing us. The problem is when belief in aliens becomes part of a conspiratorial worldview that scapegoats certain groups of people for the world's problems, displaces real history, and misuses other people's traditions and beliefs.
Belief that things can and will get better
To paraphrase Terry Pratchett's words in The Hogfather, we sometimes need to believe in things that aren't true (such as justice and mercy) so they can become true. Believing that things can change makes people feel like their efforts are worth something. Meanwhile, when everyone's got a doomer attitude nothing will change for the better because nobody will even try.
One problem with New Age's optimism in specific is that they tend to believe that things getting better is contingent on converting a large number of people to New Age spirituality, which includes getting them to accept a large number of conspiratorial beliefs that target and harm vulnerable minorities, and/or distort and erase the actual spiritual beliefs of people from different cultures (many of whom are marginalized minorities and/or have been severely harmed by colonialism already).
Another problem is when you get the whole 5D ascension thing going on. 5D ascension is basically the New Age version of the Rapture, and just like the Rapture, it's always said to be right around the corner, but it never materializes. (If you'd like examples, here are predictions for 2012 and 2015.) Very concerningly, New Agers often list a number of physical and mental health symptoms as "ascension symptoms." They were claiming this as far back as the 2010s, when December 31, 2012 was supposed to be the big day. (Here's an example.)
Basically, hope and belief that things can get better is important - but it's also important not to hang our hopes (and medical decisions) on supernatural predictions that have already failed multiple times.
Wanting to promote compassion and understanding between people
This is a great thing to want! The problem with New Age isn't that they want to spread peace and harmony, but rather the way they want to do it without really listening to the people they supposedly want to help. You can't, for example, genuinely fight colonialism if you're engaging in cultural appropriation and misrepresenting their spiritual traditions - you're an active part of the problem. Promoting compassion and understanding begins with you shutting up, listening, and learning without imposing your own preconceptions or reacting from your ego. You're not doing this if you're looking for mythology to project aliens onto, or dismissing anything you don't want to hear as a conspiracy.
And here's some critical thinking tips before you go
When you're evaluating any belief system or practice, it's always important to remember that belief and practice are not the same thing. Most of the time the practices are harmless in and of themselves; the actual danger comes from the conspiratorial and morally polarized worldviews many practitioners also subscribe to. Nobody's ever died from putting rose quartz in their room or getting a reiki session. They have died from refusing evidence-based medical care because someone convinced them that the health care industry is a scam and will also separate them from Source.
When it comes to beliefs themselves, ask yourself what kind of narratives they're upholding. If they basically promote the same kind of conspiratorial narratives used by Nazis, witch hunters, or far right Christians to justify their hatred and violence, that's a pretty strong sign that this belief is bullshit. But of course, there's a pretty stark difference between believing that aliens could be out there, and believing blood-drinking reptiles have invaded the Earth.

Hey! I hope you are alright.
If it wont be spoiler or something can you tell why Tom is using harry's cups, plates and the other things, i really Wonder and cant stop thinkining about it.
And i want to say it Adore ATLWETD. For me, fav fic of all time
Another ask: When Tom asked "what was i to you" and harry replied "i dont know" what did Tom think? And why tom is asking those questions at first place?
Another ask: hey, are you okay? I hope everything is okay there. I don't know if it means anything but my prayers are with you.
I have two question about ATLWETD.
First what did Tom feel when harry hugged him? And what are Tom's future plans for both of them? What he want?
If you dont want to answer i understand and its alright.
English its not my first language so if there is any mistake or misunderstand i am sorry.
Another ask: I just figure out how to use tumblr and as soon as i did i came your acc. I love your works. ATLWETD is reason is am still reading tomarry. I just wonder what Tom is planining rn. Take Harry to knigts and the other things. if it wont be problem i want to hear your answer, love you!
---
Since these asks are sort of related, I decided to combine them into one!
First of all, thank you all so much, both for your words and prayers! I'm so pleased that you're enjoying ATLWETD and that you're thinking of me.
Some of Tom's thought processes will become clearer later on, but I don't mind offering the specifics, especially since we won't be getting his POV until the middle of the story.
Tom has been using his mood stone on Harry repeatedly. He's been mystified by all the emotions Harry seems to be alternating between, and one in particular has intrigued him most, which is attraction.
Tom's been wondering about the specific nature of their 'alternative world' relationship for a while, and now he's begun to suspect that maybe they were romantically involved - or on the brink of becoming involved. He's curious and fascinated by this possibility. He wanted Harry to answer him truthfully, and Harry saying "I don't know" proved his hypothesis that while they weren't together, they were probably about to be in some near future.
If you liked Tom using Harry's things, just wait until the Tie Saga in the next chapter :D It'll be hilarious. Poor Harry will be so confused and frustrated by Tom's actions.
Now, why is Tom doing that? A part of it is him testing how receptive Harry is to something this intimate. To him, it's yet another indication that they were closer than friends, and since Harry doesn't react, it's probably something the other Tom did, too. Another big reason is the violation of boundaries. Tom feels entitled to Harry, to everything he is and everything he owns. He views Harry as his thing, his personal person, and he's determined to take his freedom piece by piece because Harry is supposed to be an extension of him, in his eyes. There is genuine possessiveness in him as well.
Making Harry a part of the Knights also feels into this context. Tom wants Harry to be involved in his life to the fullest extent. He's interested in seeing what Harry is going to think and how he's going to react to some of his plans and ideas. Tom has seen valuable qualities in Harry, and he wants to use them for his benefit.
What Tom felt when Harry hugged him - uncertainty, mostly. Unexpected warmth. Fascination. Some awkwardness. It's one thing to build theories about their alleged romantic relationship, but it's another to get a more physical confirmation of it.
Tom isn't planning or not planning to become involved with Harry romantically right now. He's just watching how everything unfolds, and he's increasingly interested in being surprised and experiencing something new.

Hey look, Biden pardoned his son and the media is going wall-to-wall in its coverage. Yeah, this is exactly what's wrong with our country right now. SHORT RANT (TM)?
WHAT HAPPENED?
So, for those who missed it, President Biden has officially pardoned his son Hunter. Media coverage of this is wall-to-wall today, it's the front page story on every single national news website. But, of course, that's not the whole story here or I wouldn't be calling it "what's wrong with our country".
Obviously it's getting reported as unequal justice, but let's look at what led to it in the first place. As reported at the time, the firearms charges that he was charged with and convicted of are charges that are almost never charged if they are the only ones that can be proven. In other words, far from being unequally pardoned of common crimes, the younger Biden is being pardoned of crimes that no ordinary person would have been charged with in the first place.
Let's face it, Biden wouldn't have needed a pardon if his dad hadn't been president. I'm a father myself and, if my kid was facing jail time as a result of something I did and I had the power to undo that, I'd undo it without a second thought and who cares about the consequences. Good luck finding a headline or even a full article in the American media today that provides all of that detail.
THE COVERAGE
The most responsible coverage reports this in the context of how it will provide an example for Trump to point to about how justice in this country is unequal/political, which, sure? Of course, that coverage (1) doesn't mention the context that I described above and (2) largely ignores Trump's own massive politicization of justice for the benefit of himself and his cronies.
The less responsible coverage, FOX News for example, simply reports it as an outrage the likes of which has never happened in American history and provides no other context whatsoever. As I said, I expect this from FOX, but the issue is how much this particular framing has leeched out into the broader media ecosystem because we've all forgotten the lessons of 2016 in which we should have learned that FOX and right-wing media in general must largely be tuned out if you want to report accurate news.
WHY IT'S A PROBLEM
Look, I'm all for being outraged that Biden is doing something like this, but are you only outraged at Biden? Where was this outrage when Trump pardoned major political supporters, campaign staff, and political advisors? Where was the outrage when he pardoned 7 Congressmen who had supported him politically? Where was the outrage when he pardoned wealthy individuals who had paid tens of thousands of dollars for those pardons? Where was the outrage when he promised to issue a blanket pardon to those who attempted to overthrow our Constitution and our democracy on January 6th, 2021? Where was the outrage when he talked about pardoning HIMSELF for the myriad of crimes that he has committed and been charged with?
If we're going to talk about unequal justice, let's talk about unequal justice, but at this point it seems like there is more outrage for people who take actions that might feed into Trump's misguided narratives than there is for Trump himself.
When Democrats talk about a double standard, this is it; Democrats are held to an impossible standard of perfection because any perceived misstep might give fuel to Trump's outrageous lies while Trump himself is able to do just about anything with only the barest of peeps. It's a double-standard that's guaranteed to make even the most perfect Democrat look as bad as Trump to the casual observer even as he wallows in corruption, bigotry, and criminality.
That's what's wrong with our country right now, we can't accurately get across the scale of atrociousness that Trump commits on a daily basis because we're too focused on making sure that those opposing him meet an impossible standard of purity before we're willing to even look at him. No problem can be fixed until the person who needs to fix it can put a name to the problem and describe it and the American media seems to be committed to making sure that we are never able to understand where the problem actually lies and what it actually is.
Until that changes, be prepared for American politics to sink deeper and deeper into the muck and mire of Trumpian corruption.

Creature Commandos...is NOT James Gunn's best work
"That sounds like a clickbaity title."
Oh, it's VERY clickbaity, but it's the honest feeling I get from this series. Creature Commandos, to me, feels like a show that's ALMOST good. I mean, for what it is, it's still a fun show that has Gunn's usual brand of balancing darkness with comedy, some delightfully fun and brutal action scenes, and some decent animation...for the most part. It becomes obvious how much the budget went into certain scenes compared to others with how rigged and stiff characters move from time to time. Other than that, though, I'd still say that if you're a fan of James Gunn's work, you're likely going to have a good time watching this. But if you want his BEST work, well, that's where things get a little complicated and we're GOING to have to go into spoilers to talk about it.
Keep in mind, though, this is NOT a show for kids or those with an uneasy stomach. You will watch life drain from a child's eyes in this series and it will make you feel VERY uncomfortable in all the right (and mostly wrong) ways. Consider that your warning before we get right into things.
Spoilers Ahead
Positives first, I LOVE how this series pulls no punches. Like I said, things will make you uncomfortable for the sole purpose of telling tragic tales of humanity looking down at what it perceives to be monsters. There's a scene where a man is crying his eyes out as gangsters rub his hands all over the blood of his recently murdered wife and child, and it's quite possibly the most horrific thing James Gunn has put to screen. Now, if this was back in 2015, I would absolutely have seen this as a negative. It's another example of DC going overly dark for no reason when superheroes are not overly dark characters. However, I've grown a bit since the days where everyone was making fun of Batman v. Superman for being overly edgy. Darkness was never the problem in that movie. The problem was thinking that a bright, hopeful character like Superman deserves to be adapted in a dark, almost hopeless world. A grim story is fine if it suits the character, and Creature Commandos, for all its worth, is a comic line worthy of the edge.
I've only read a handful of issues of the original Creature Commandos run, and from the good amount of stories I've read I'd say it's appropriate to give them a dark enough adaptation. It's a series of stories about these soldiers being turned into monsters, some voluntarily and others being forced this way, with their disfigurements and changes often being met with wisecracks from their rude and VASTLY annoying commanding officer (Who I am very glad is not adapted into this). These characters often feel tortured to have their lives changed so harshly, with the character Lucky being in the most turmoil. He was a military officer that blew up from a landmine and the troops came to stitch him back together in this horrific Frankenstein monster that has everything saved except vocal chords. And, when not being able to take it anymore, he attempts to commit suicide only for the doctors to stitch him back up. Again.
Creature Commandos can get a little silly at times, of course. Every comic tends to. But when adapting it, I think it's fair to still give it more of an edge than any other superhero project. James Gunn certainly tries to do that with his usual style, and, for the most part, I say he does it well. Gunn went on record stating that Creature Commandos is probably the saddest thing he's ever written and I can certainly see why in certain scenes. All of the Commandos are monsters that were made to exist in this world without any choice, were transformed that way by acts of science gone wrong, or are deemed monsters because society said so. The Weasel in particular is surprisingly tragic, showing us that he was never really a danger to anyone. It was only a misunderstanding and unfortunate circumstance that made everyone believe he's a monster, with the only exception being the naive who just didn't know better. The more I think on it, the more that I feel bad for this lanky creature who's not evil or mean or ANYTHING. He's just a wild animal that only knows how to survive or protect. It honestly changes how I look at that scraggly thing that drowned in the first few minutes of The Suicide Squad.
The rest of the Commandos also toe the line between tragic and endearing. Each episode gives us a glimpse into their past, showing how they came to be and the differences between how they were and who they are. The Bride and Doctor Phosphorus definitely have a lot in common, once being happy with the lives they had until someone vile takes that happiness away, with both going through different coping mechanisms. The Bride chose to run from the man who ruined her life, growing jaded after centuries of having this constant and persistent reminder of why she existed in the first place and doing anything but a monster's bride. As for Phosphorus, he decided to face his trauma head-on and murder the people who ruined his life and take their place in the criminal underworld to fill in the void of a lost family. Both often act jaded and show no remorse for doing some pretty bad stuff to people, but you know why quick enough and even feel bad for them when good things in their lives are only fleeting.
Though, not everyone's jaded. Both Nina and GI Robot act more positive with the hands that their given. Both very much did not ASK for the life that they have, but still try to make the best out of most situations. Nina gave humanity a shot for most of her life only to give up when it became too much for her, but still embraced being a fish person a lot easier than you expect and STILL tries to act as nice as possible despite having EVERY REASON to act like the monster her girlfriend best friend does. Yet Nina doesn't, and that's genuinely admirable. I like how she tries to treat others better than how humanity treated her, and I love a character like that.
But GI Robot? Oh, man. GI Robot is absolutely my favorite character in this. There's just something to love about a Nazi-Murdering robot who takes great pride in killing Nazi scum. And yet, that very fact is also kind of tragic too. He was built to be an effective solution for what the US soon decided to be a temporary problem. Killing Nazis is all he knew and without that purpose he was just...a machine that grew irrelevant while the world he knew lived on past him. And most of the time, when people treated him like a person, it was either because he seemed useful or they wanted something out of him. The only one who's affection seemed genuine was Nina...which makes it sad that she never got to see him again and he never really got to say goodbye--FUCK, James Gunn, you're a cold-hearted bastard!
Though, there's more than just tragedy in this. It's a James Gunn production, after all. There's going to be his usual brand of humor and, while it's more miss than hit this time around, there's still some great bits to be had all through these characters and their interactions. James Gunn is great at endearing you to characters through comedy and showing how well these ensemble casts can work off of each other. It's no different here, with Rick Flag Sr. in particular working well off of everyone as the perfect straight man. The way he tries, and often fails, to corral these misfits is often humorous.
If you can tell by now, there's a lot more praise in this than you'd might expect. And that's because I meant what I said in the intro. This is a GOOD James Gunn production with a lot of great moments that help endear me to these characters...MOMENTS. There are MOMENTS in this show that I love. But when you interweave those moments, characters, and themes into one long narrative? Well, to quote what he believes to be one of the best superhero movies...
It's a hot mess.
James Gunn is NOT good at writing a TV show. I had my doubts with Peacemaker Season One, and those doubts are only reinforced by this season of Creature Commandos. He's great at writing ONE story out in a single movie, but to write SHORTER stories to help a stretched out narrative, that's where things get a little messy. I love how each episode is sort of structured as a "Backstory of the week" format where we learn more about each Commando, but not ALWAYS does it feel like that's the important thing going on. Not all the time, mind you, but it feels like The Weasel and Doctor Phosphorus' tragic origins don't get the longevity or focus they need. Weasel's backstory plays second fiddle to the episode focusing more on the overarching PLOT instead of what's going on with him. Even though an episode where a lawyer is trying DESPERATELY to communicate with something that can't speak WOULD have been interesting. As for Doctor Phosphorus, there's not a lot of time to linger on his past and how he was happy before showing how thoroughly FUCKED his life became. We had to show what the rest of the Commandos were doing and sell this message about how being a whore is better than a killer (Which, I mean...fair?), when seeing more of Phosphorus' happy life would have further sell the tragedy of what happened to him.
Another issue is that while James Gunn is doing good in making me love these characters as INDIVIDUALS, I don't care too much about them as a team. This is actually one of his weakest ensembles because the chemistry and relationships aren't as strong. The Bride and Nina's "friendship" was nice, but we don't see how well the others do together. Phosphorus has a handful of conversations with The Bride and talks AT Weasel instead of TO him. Rarely is there a sense of commradery shared between these characters. The Guardians of the Galaxy have that "Losers" speech Star-Lord gives or planning the prison break, and The Suicide Squad have that bar party scene or the conversation on the bus. These are moments where you can see how well these characters and actors work off of each other, and the Creature Commandos don't really have a scene like that. When we got to that bit where The Bride and Phosphorus try to convince Nina to kill the princess, I couldn't really FEEL the emotions in that scene because this is really the first time these characters felt like a team and trying to have conversation together as a group. I hope that Season Two does a far better job with the NEW cast, but I'm also hopeful that James Gunn also finds a better story, because he fell short in creating something SATISFYING with all this narrative build-up. There are two cases where it's the most noticeable.
First is probably the best and worst character in this entire series: Eric Frankenstein. This is a great character, who often switches on a dime between being both hilarious and eerie. One second he's waxing poetically about how beautiful his false love is, sometimes doing sick and disturbed shit to people so he can get his way. And other times, he so firmly believes that him and Rick are best friends and simps for The Bride in such a pathetic matter that I can't help but laugh at him. His as sick as he is hilarious...but his character goes NOWHERE. This entire season builds up how he's going to meet The Bride again, and when they DO meet, she just shoots him down to an inch of his life. After all this build-up, he ends up getting his shit kicked in, which isn't all that special or satisfying to see as episode two just has a whole MONTAGE of the exact same thing happening. By the time the season ends, it's right back to square one, making me wonder if there was even a POINT to making Frankenstein play a role in the present narrative. He works perfectly to explain why The Bride turned out so fucked up, but other than that, you could almost write him out with very little changes being necessary. Honestly, it feels like it'd be smarter to save him for Season Two or to make HIM the main antagonist of the season instead of the princess.
Oh, and that's other thing: The twist with the Princess is poorly handled. I like the irony that we're supposed to ROOT for the monsters about to kill the beautiful princess, but there's no real build up or expectations that this is the natural conclusion. We're first told by a SUPERVILLAIN that Princess Ilana is evil, so the first instinct is to believe that's horseshit. I mean...it's a supervillain, obviously we're not supposed to take their word for it. And we're never given a distinction that Ilana is evil aside from this cold stare she gives Nina while murdering her. That happens in the LAST episode, with every other scene she has involves having her be the sweetest, kindest, horniest person in the show. The closest I can think of is the scene where she's begging for her life and seems too willing to give Circe anything she wants. Like, no one pure would barter with a supervillain if it meant saving their life. Still, you could argue that's James Gunn writing her to be more human because, yeah, humans aren't inherently pure. I'm not asking for much, I'm just asking for MORE scenes where it's clear she's not to be trusted instead of making her a Disney style twist villain for The Bride to shoot. Especially since it'd make the ending ACTUALLY satisfying.
Having The Bride basically explain Ilana's overly complicated plan so she can justify shooting her is...all kinds of wonky. Because we never really got to see how evil the princess is until just now, this feels like James Gunn is holding the audience by the hand and guiding them through all the vague and forgettable details we missed. A proper twist builds on the BIG moments in the story, not the little ones. Plus, it is so weird to me that The Bride executes the leader of a foreign country...and NO ONE gave a shit. The soldiers didn't fight them, the media didn't throw a fit, and the US government even REWARDS The Bride and the Commandos for this decision. And that...That just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I'm fine with characters doing dark, fucked up things and leaving it up to the audience to decide if it's the right call or not...But for the story to paint this as the right thing to do, especially with The Bride spoon-feeding us this information that she's JUSTIFIED in her actions, it's just...not a good ending. In fact, this is probably the most rushed, faulty ending that James Gunn has ever written.
Everything else that's faulty about the show is small and I don't need to dwell on. The pacing is atrocious, but I blame that more on how modern streaming has ruined television. Shows aren't allowed to take their time anymore out of fear of sudden cancellation or because studios think it's better to give audiences that quick binge. If you were to tell me that Creature Commandos was meant to have another episode, or that it was originally meant to have TEN, I'd believe it.
James Gun also WASTES some pretty good DC villains. Circe gets her ass kicked by The Weasel of all characters and Clayface is presumed dead. A show that features one of Wonder Woman's BIGGEST villains and one of Batman's popular foes ends up doing NOTHING with them all so Gunn could do a bad job at making the Princess the bigger threat. It especially hurts since the teasers and trailers put a lot of emphasis on Circe being the main villain, only to have her get written out halfway through.
Also, on Twitter, this show has a LOT of heat as someone pointed out how James Gunn is bad at writing women. I'm not going to get into that discussion because that's a whole different can of worms that I'm not able to properly discuss...but I will admit that this is his worst work with female characters. They're often sexualized or fucked up by men, with there often feeling like an imbalance with how often it happens with men. Sure, Rick Flag Sr. is treated as an absolute GILF in episode two, but there's an entire episode taking place inside a whore house and how "empowering" they are. It doesn't help either with how sexualized Nina is. She spends a good amount of the series fully naked and, yes, she doesn't have genitals...but do you REALLY think boys will care. And with how the tragedy of The Bride was that she was a creation from a pervy stalker, it doesn't feel right to have her outfit be all torn up and revealing for all the other pervs to gawk at. Again, it's a WHOLE thing that I'm not gonna get into. I'm just gonna leave it to those who are MUCH more capable than me to talk things like this.
Creature Commandos is really good...in moments. I like these characters, I like a lot of these scenes, and I overall had a great time watching. I think James Gunn did a decent job, but nothing that tops some of his best works or even compares to them. Guardians of the Galaxy is amazing, The Suicide Squad is the only GOOD DCEU movie, and I am very much looking forward to his take on Superman. But if I were to recommend Creature Commandos, I can't really do it without letting people know its his WEAKEST project. You'll have fun, just not more fun than anything else he made. Hopefully things get better by Season Two, because for now it's more of miss than a hit.
