Hi! I wanted to ask for advice on finding an artstyle, I've been drawing for sometime but I still dislike my style.

Whenever my artstyle gets kinda boring to me, I try asking myself questions to figure out what exactly is it about my artstyle that I don’t like. Things like what is it about my art that feels boring to me while this other’s artist’s work excites me? What makes me most insecure about this piece? What do my favorite artists do in their artworks that I don’t do?

This isn’t to put yourself or your work down, make sure to go out of your way to still note anything you like or are particularly proud of in any of your artworks, you work hard on your art and that deserves to be appreciated, even if your artstyle isn’t quite at where you want it to be yet! But this is mainly what I do to try to address reasons my artstyle isn’t giving me as much joy, and what changes I can make that might make me happier. Most of the time I can’t really put my finger on what it is that I dislike about my art, so I keep these questions in the back of my mind while I try experimenting through doodles and messing around with my style in each one. Have some doodles dedicated to things you dont normally try in your artstyle. Varying eye sizes and distance from each other, some doodles with different ways of stylizing noses, trying varying levels of realism vs cartoonishness when drawing characters, and trying different brushes if doing this in digital art. If any specific doodles jump out to you as kinda neat, take note of whatever you did in that doodle and try it more often!

(Sorry i was doing this in a hurry but definitely couldve utilized more full body shots, varying poses, face at more side angles, coloring styles, would 100% reccomend experimenting with that too. But this is mostly what those batches of experiment doodles usually look like for me)

As always, it doesn’t hurt to also study other artists’s whos stuff makes you so happy and figure out what it is about their art style that excites you so much. Whatever that may be, think about if its something you want in your own art style and try replicating and practice doing it if you do want to take your art in that direction.

Quick example from me but november 2023 i remember starting to feel super uninspired with my artstyle. I asked myself what felt like the most unrewarding part of the process for drawing and realized the answer was my lineart. At the time I was seeing a lot of @/bixels ‘s artwork of drawing mlp characters as humans from the 1920’s americana and was so delighted by their lineart. I kept experimenting with brushes in my doodles and realized that using the gel pen reminded me somewhat of bixels’ art, so I took that and ran. It was a neat change after a while of having thicker lineart and actually having fun with pressure sensitivity and how the brush is able to taper.

This is what i found works for myself so im not sure how well it applies to other people or if i worded everything well, but I hope its at least a bit helpful in some way!

Lore dump under read more!

Baphomet 

Lore: All of them have magic and instead of a traditional family, Baphomets are raised in covens, with kids usually being grouped together like the girls in Madeleine. They’re taken care of by a priest (of any gender), who is helped by deacons (also of any gender). They are ruled by the High Priest (usually female). They are sensitive to light and live in ruins. They’re secretive and vaguely sinister, but also very polite. A respectful attitude is very important for Baphomets. 

Their naming conventions are 4 letters, a hyphen, and a three letter surname (eg: Rose-Lal, Kana-Mar Neta-Lei, etc.), . Though the relationship between parent and child isn’t given much focus (since children are raised by coven leaders instead), Baphomets take their birthgiver’s surname. 

Appearance: they all have that same color scheme, though perhaps in differing shades? Their horns are always goat-like but the shape can differ. They have goat-like eyes, too, with bright pink scleras. They have long tails and cat-like noses.

They have little flames atop their heads like a weird halo- it’s mostly harmless, though when a Baphomet is straining their magical energy the flames can grow out of control and become larger. It is said that a Baphomet who is overwhelmed with hatred and power will be consumed by their own flames. In its default form, however, all it does is glow harmlessly. It disappears when a Baphomet is sleeping or dead. 

Their symbols are geometric, runelike shapes that are always mainly pink with a white accent. 

Tengu 

Lore: A pretty mundane fanspecies, all things considered. They’re not that different from humans socially or culturally. Harpies and Tengus (and perhaps some other bird based fanspecies I may create in the future) are thought to be descended from a common ancestor, though the tengus have their own myths/beliefs. They like tall areas though and are often from mountainous regions. They may or may not be able to fly once they reach maturity, I haven’t made up my mind, though if they do I;m sure the harpies are mad about it since they can’t. 

Naming convention is undecided, though I’m gonna go with six letter first names for now.

Appearance: They have the wings of a crow and the ears of a dog. They have golden scleras like the trolls and facial markings inspired by kabuki performances, so they’re mostly red but other colors can be used as well. As for their hair color… I’m a bit torn if they all have blue hair or if they have differing hair colors. You can decide if you want! 

Their symbols are pretty much just fankid symbols, but with two colors.

Harpy 

Lore: According to Harpy mythology, they once had wings that were big enough to soar across the sky and never get tired. They believe that the original harpies were created to be entertainers for their God, but they grew greedy and prideful and tried to fly to Paradise and steal God’s riches. In retaliation, God took away the Harpy’s most prized possession- their wings, so that they would not be able to fly again. Realizing their mistake, the Harpies begged for forgiveness and wished for their wings to return… Which it did, but in much smaller form- no longer than a human’s arm, and certainly not big enough to fly for anymore. And so, the modern harpy is with wings that cannot fly. 

Dancing is a very big deal for harpies, and they have a variety of traditional dances, and many of their folk stories are told through the art of dance. 

Appearance: In addition to their facial markings, Harpies also tend to have body markings. Shoulders are most common but it can appear anywhere. 

As for color, the harpy I made had her color scheme lifted right off of Feng Huang from SMT, but I think any bright color is possible. Hair color tends to be dark, but not always. Antennae feather thing is usually gold though, as is their hands and feet that have that bird skin (I think they’re called scutes?). Speaking of feet, they’ve got clawed feet and thick soles so they don’t wear shoes, but some of them wrap their feet for a little extra protection. 

Naming convention is 4 letter first names and surnames ranging from 3 to 5 letters. 

Their symbols are troll-like.

What's the writing process like??? Since in the notes of I believe chapter 1 it says its all from a discord channel so I'm really curious about how you and cupidkiss go about writing???

The writing process of HFM kind of just… came out of somewhere? It got far far smoother as we went on. The first couple chapters initially were rough when released to AO3 but since then I have gone back one or two times and revised.

Initially the rp wasn’t even going to be uploaded to AO3. I just decided to archive the roleplay on a google doc because I had a long ass roleplay way back with another person and I regret I never archived it. It was only a couple chapters in me and Paigey realized we were onto something good. I took up the duty of archiving, revising, and uploading the roleplay because it was my desire to fan fiction it.

Why discord?:

Because me and paigey talk on discord and we felt it was most convenient to just make a discord server for keep everything organized.

General: commentary on the events on the roleplaying/ live reactions. It also functions as a catch all channel for any topic that isn’t captured by others.

Rp: channel where we take turns sending responses. Once a message is uploaded, I can copy and paste it into google docs (with minimal formatting issues).

Plot ideas: this was more active earlier in the story when we were organizing ideas, but it’s basically where we shot ideas and planned what would come next in an arc.

Prompts: similar to plot ideas but far more loose and general. This was a channel for art ideas, silly story ideas, character creation ideas, AU ideas, etc.

Art: where we exchanged art of the RP and characters. This channel mainly exists so I can find art quicker and don’t have to filter through something like general channel for a drawing.

Refs: author Bible channel. Quick place to find ref sheets, character desc, maps, mood boards, and whatever else we need to quickly pull up.

Photos: posts not made me either of us that we send to the server. Yet again exists so I can find images or links sent easier.

There are more channels but they are unrelated or AU related.

In rp channel we initially used Tubberbots for Boone and malt because…. Idk. Thought it’d be cool. Near the end I stopped using my malt tubberbot because it prevented me from existing my messages.

All the rp gets put into a doc and revised by me. Everytime we send a rp response, it gets a once over read, then another scan by me when I am in revising mode. Once there is enough written to be one whole chapter, I do a revise of the entire chapter in one sitting. It is during this step I turn all *italic words* into Italic words because discord copy and paste doesn’t copy the text effects across to google docs.

Once I do that final review, I copy it and upload it to AO3. There are 2 google docs. The first one got so full it would crash and so I made another one. It’s holding up better than the last one, even if it is longer.

Would I recommend roleplaying like this? Hmmm. Not particularly, but I can’t think of many better ways. Discord is familiar and accessible and even though it has formatting issues, it is not the worst.

~Lore:

• While the Company of Light fought against the Ancestral Witches (after defeating Valtor) the reason they were so powerful and why they were so hard to defeat was that they (unlike Darkar, and other magical enemies/creatures) did not have a magical balance

• Previously they did, due to one of my own other characters, Almah (the previous Fairy of Dark Arts) existing.

• Though they killed Almah before the battle against the Company of Light, and she was doomed to exists as a spirit because her soul couldn’t rest. (Same as Daphne’s fate, and spirits with unfinished work is actually common in the Magical Demension). Almah’s spirit soon mentored Iorda in the events of season 1

• Lilith (one of the Ancestors) made sure no one remembered Almah existed

• When the Ancestors were defeated the Company of Light (in order to make sure future descendants of the Ancestors did not wreak havoc, or should they come back) merged a small remainder of one of the Ancestor’s magic (Lilith, specifically Darcy’s ancestor) with some of their own in a powerful convergence spell, and that combined energy just went around non-sentiently until it made its way to Iorda

• Iorda without the combined magic by chance making its way to her would’ve been a human, but the magic was strong enough to manifest her into a fairy (as was the intention of the spell, ie, a fairy to balance the Ancestral Witches)

• The spirit of Almah communicates through the dreams back in Earth, and soon Iorda’s magic manifests (not transforming yet.) After convincing her family, Iorda uses the special spell (girl had to run around to collect a lot of things for it) Almah told her to use to open a portal to Magix

• Iorda arrives in Magix and, with the limited information Almah told her (on purpose—Almah could see Iorda’s future, and it sure wasn’t pretty, so she wouldn’t let her run away from her fate) went to Alfea

• But since Iorda has mainly Lilith’s magic, Miss Griselda thought she was a witch. Before Almah was killed she was a student at Alfea and was killed when three witches (the Ancestors in disguise) snuck into Alfea and killed Almah. Griselda and Faragonda still existed at this time, just beginning teaching at the school

•Iorda is turned away and decides to just go to Cloud Tower. She needs to learn magic and she isn’t above going to a school for witches. She runs into Mirta and the two walk to Cloud Tower together

• Iorda during the time of season 1 meets several other witches besides Mirta and Lucy, who are really nice people, and they form a group called the Nyx

• These witches are Pyris (witch of disguise and deception, eventually Iorda’s girlfriend at the end of season 1)

• Lucina (witch of blood)

• And Nith (witch of water and ice)

• The events of season 1 on the Winx’s side goes on as usual, but during that time Iorda disrupts the Trix’s plans because she just isn’t going to let them hurt the people at Alfea—where she would have gone to

• She stops them from stealing the ring during the dance but later returns it when Iorda runs into Musa while she is racing away from the witches after slapping Icy

• Towards the end of season 1, Pyris (Headmistress Griffins granddaughter) tells Iorda about a tomb. It holds the access to the Whisperian Crystals (that were sealed by the Company of Light, only to be opened by the balance they created) because they were the primary weopans of the Ancestors

• Long story short, Iorda opened tomb, Pryis reveals information, Iorda is overcome with stress and shock. Iorda has the power of the Whisperian Crystals inside her and of cource they get stolen by the Trix (not her magic, they’re just like, we can do that later)

• This replaces the Trix stealing Blooms magic (gurl gets spotlight in season 2 & 3 though)

• The fight against the Army of Decay goes on as normal

• And so on, Iorda (being the Trix’s balance and all since they are the decendants of the Ancestral Witches) faces a lot of turmoil as the Trix want her kind of dead

• Then at the time of season 6 they just want Iorda to suffer because, as determined she is, Iorda is a little sh!t who was messed with their plans one too many times (I mean it’s her job)

Duskmourn- The Living Horror Plane Theory

Hello, this is me making another big post, but this time related to an upcoming set we know almost nothing about other than its loose themes. Duskmourn, a set themed around modern horror, or more accurately horror from the 70’s and 80’s, is extremely unique in that it takes place on the plane of Duskmourn. Why is that unique? You see, Duskmourn, the plane, is not like other planes at all. Even the most corrupted of Magic’s natural worlds, like Innistrad and Amonkhet, have a natural appearance to them. They have wildlife, a difference between civilization and nature, and overall are just standard worlds with differing cultures and ecosystems.

Duskmourn is extremely different from that.

Duskmourn is just one, absolutely gigantic, haunted mansion. As far as we know, this plane has very little in terms of an actual “world” and is just this massive house of horrors, hence the name of the set “Duskmourn: House of Horrors”. What is so interesting about this is the potential implications of this. As said, Magic’s planes almost universally follow the basic blueprint of being an actual world not unlike our own aside from the magical aspects of them, like Kamigawa’s Spirit Realm and similar.

The only plane that comes close to not being an actual “world” is Mirrodin, now better known as New Phyrexia. Even New Phyrexia, a world molded to its core by Elesh Norn and the other praetors of New Phyrexia, loosely imitates a natural world with its various spheres each having their own… ecosystem if they can be called that.

Duskmourn, until it is shown further and they say otherwise, has none of this to our understanding. It’s ONLY this big mansion. This leads me to my main theory I have today:

Duskmourn is an unnatural world.

And I don’t just mean this by how different it is. I mean to imply either this plane was created, similar to Mirrodin, by an extremely powerful entity, OR has been so heavily corrupted/modified/etc by a similar entity that it can no longer be called a “natural plane”.

The first possibility is interesting, but there isn’t much to further analyze with that possibility. We don’t know of any characters currently that can CREATE planes that aren’t just some random oldwalker we probably haven’t met yet or some all powerful demon potentially.

The second possibility, that the plane was corrupted and shaped into its current form by an extremely powerful entity, does have more interesting implications, as there are hilariously several beings in Magic’s modern lore capable of doing so. This is mainly because it seems to take much less effort to corrupt an individual plane, especially if you have a lot of help, than it is to create a full plane. Not that it still isn’t world breaking power at play, but its possible. We saw the New Phyrexians do it to Mirrodin, and they probably could have done it to other worlds if they weren’t met with heavy pushback.

Let’s revisit the image that I posted above and has basically been WotC’s chosen image to showcase the plane in its little time slot on their release timeline.

This is an extremely large, very eldritch and/or demonic looking entity that dwells on Duskmourn… or perhaps more. If you study this art, its “body” naturally flows into what can be called doors, staircases, pillars, and windows. The sheer size of this thing is awe inspiring, and it is extremely eldritch in appearance. Its really only a little different in appearance to another cast of very eldritch entities in Magic’s lore that I also made big posts about.

The Eldrazi Titans. Very similar bone-like appearance to Ulamog, very similar “multiple limb” design of Kozilek, and a similar “glowing eldritch hole(s)” design to Emrakul. You might see where I am going with this, which is:

Duskmourn is a giant, living plane, who’s World Soul has been supplanted by an Eldrazi Titan.

Now, you might say, “But Colin, Eldrazi’s do not do that. They eat worlds.” But how do we know that? Emrakul, in Eldritch Moon, was fully capable of taking over Innistrad. She had the entire plane in her grasp and there were no signs of her losing. She was delayed by the Gatewatch, but by the end all of them had been mentally overwhelmed by her powers. Emrakul sealed herself into Innistrad’s moon at the end of it all, clearly with a larger, more complex goal in mind that has haunted us to this day.

Duskmourn, I believe, is a world that has been completely corrupted by an Eldrazi not unlike Emrakul.

The inhabitants, who I don’t even know how they survive in such a world, are constantly bombarded by mental attacks from the world itself. This is not unlike what happened when Emrakul fought the Gatewatch. Every inhabitant of Duskmourn is a captive in Duskmourn’s corrupting grasp, and that will be central to the plane I believe. This is an unnatural world run by an eldritch entity, and the nature of it could be the key to learning more about the Eldrazi and/or how the World Souls of planes function.

I am very excited to see what Duskmourn has in store, and I hope it does not disappoint.

Ada. Her hand is liquid warmth, pooling around you, molding like shea butter to pull you up before she shoots her comrade a shaky smile and nods. You’re wary, suddenly, of her shaky movements, on edge like a skittish mouse.

“Is something wrong?” you ask, voice tentative. Ada stalks ahead of you, shoes clacking on the unsteady floor, roiling your stomach, tossing your insides back up in your throat. 

No, no, no, no, no, no.

“Sadly, yes,” Ada says, albeit you give her a little grace for the hint of sadness in her voice before tossing her a glare. “Know yourself, and you’ll know your enemy.”

“What?” You scowl at her, but she just gestures in front of her, into some kind of structure. It looks like a well, from the outside, bricks bearing the weight of time, chipped pieces lying on the wood, nature colliding with itself.

Much like your fear and curiosity once again warring within you, blood pulsing to your hands that reach out to grasp the edge of the monochrome stone wall, feeling every indent dig little grooves into your palm.

“I am not the enemy here,” she states calmly, “but you don’t seem to know who the real threat is. To you, at least.”

“If not you, then who is?” You tilt your head quizzically, leaning back over the edge to the bloom of darkness. There’s some liquid down there, you can tell from the gentle sloshing that floats its way up to you, but you can’t discern it from this distance.

“You are.” All at once the liquid rises to meet your face, reflecting a grotesque figure of you, cracked and shattered, blood and skin akin to the dark ruby liquid pooling your hate into an image, bones pressing against your face as you stare back at the face.

Your face. Do you really look like that?

“That… that isn’t me,” you say, hesitating.

“No?” Ada chuckles. “To find who you truly are, you must delve into the parts of you that you swore never to face again. The ones that are hidden behind that pretty little mask of yours,”

A soft finger, trailing even softer down your face. Her touch is gentle, restrained, and you can feel the volumes it speaks with just the one action, a motion so fluid you must freeze.

“Go ahead,” she coos, coaxing you to peer over the edge. “Look harder.”

And in the liquid, you spot it. The figure struggling for purchase on the walls, reaching for the glowing substance in the liquid, waving in and out of sight, struggling to be seen. You look to Ada, who offers no guidance.

So you reach out to the glow, trying to believe it’s a real, tangible item, and when you finally grab hold of it and curl it around your finger, heaving it towards you, two things quickly become apparent to you.

The first one is that this is the same thread you’ve been chasing in yourself for so long, forcing yourself not to succumb to these demon’s wishes, and yet… you come to the second revelation. The figure was your humanity.

And you’ve just ripped it away.

Ada cradles your face in her hands, smearing the liquid onto your cheeks, gazing at you with such adoration that it makes you sick, churning your stomach as you struggle to fight her steely grip, her hooded eyes only becoming more crazed as you struggle.

Finally, you manage to slip away under her slick fingers, yet she doesn’t move. She examines you for a moment, admonishing the aching pain bursting in your jaw, the curling of your teeth only felt as you run your tongue along the ridges. You scan your arms, watching the color drain from the skin, rendering you pasty white.

A part of your identity, gone. Without your humanity, what are you?

“You aren’t too sharp, are you?” Ada muses, fingers curling at her chin, staining the pale skin with a cherry colored tint, twisted, bloody makeup that runs down her neck, which she lifts in a silent question, goading a reply from you.

“What���” You gulp to swallow the remains of your fear, forcing it to stay down along with the contents of your stomach. “What am I?”

“A vampire,” she replies simply. You stumble backwards at her grin.

And you spot strands webbing over her teeth.

Chapter 2, Part 2: The Sea Protects

Loki breathes in deeply, amazed that he is breathing in water, as he does air. The currents around them swell, and fish swim all around him in shimmering colors - their bioluminescence lighting up the dark depths of the ocean, and glowing plants sway in the currents, the colors lighting up the waters. 

However, this is nothing compared to the palace in front of Loki. It glows, showing its proud and majestic features. Jewels and pearls decorate its exterior tastefully, with stone carved beautifully as crafted art of the tides and oceans and life. Somehow, yet, the palace still looks daunting, its beautiful exterior a beautiful mask, hiding dangerous points and defenses with a carefree grace when one begins to look more closely at its majesty. 

“Enjoying the view, my απατεών (“shark”),” Poseidon grins at Loki’s awe of his kingdom. His “human” form shed to his simple mer form, with now dark cobalt skin sparkling with dark golden highlights, and his two twin tails grace the water. His long black hair now has a hint of blue in it, and his eyes reflect the deep dark waters around them. He, however, does not change to his royal attire or complete royal form that Loki has seen before, all sparkling and brilliant and deadly, as they need to stay inconspicuous for now. 

Though, Poseidon is still 15 feet tall, about 3 ft taller than the average mer person, and Loki is 6’2”, so they are still bound to stick out a bit.

“Shark,” Loki rolls his eyes once again grateful for Allspeak, “You really couldn’t come up with a better nickname my ᚲᛚᛟᚹᚾ ᚠᛁᛋᚺ.”

“Yet you call me clown fish,” Poseidon rolls his eyes, but looks at Loki fondly, “Besides sharks are a dangerous beauty, much like you are αγαπητε μου (“my dear”).”

Loki’s cheeks heated up, despite himself, “Yes, while clown fish was mainly to jab at your striking sense of humor, I know that clownfish are protective fathers, and you will do whatever it takes for the safety of our child.” 

Loki holds his still flat stomach tenderly and looks fiercely into Poeidon’s beautiful deep greens, “It's why you blessed me to breathe underwater, even when I would have been fine due to my asgardian biology adjusting to the new environment much like how I can survive in space for long periods of time without air, you didn’t want to risk the baby. ᚺᛖᛚ (“Hel”), we are here under the sea to get help for our child in the first place. You are already an amazing father, my lovely ᚲᛚᛟᚹᚾ ᚠᛁᛋᚺ.” Loki adds on with a sincere smile.

Poseidon's cheeks heat up, and he looks at Loki bashfully. Then, he seems to come to a revelation, “I knew you secretly liked Finding Nemo!”

“I-I don’t,” Loki states indignantly, “I just think that Marlin’s parenting is admirable, with how much he cares even when his child is different.” Loki then gets lost in his thoughts, wishing that, despite his differences, his father Odin was that protective and loving. Alas, that isn’t the case, and Loki sighs. 

Poseidon senses Loki’s change in mood and goes to squeeze his hand comfortingly.

Loki looks into Poseidon’s worrying eyes, “I-I’m fine Poseidon. Now, let’s go and meet your family.” Loki squeezes Poseidon’s hand back reassuringly, and lets go. Then, Loki breathed in and straightened his back, the posture and stance fit for a prince, and walked (swam?) into the palace with grace.

Luckily, the visit wasn’t unexpected for Amphitrite nor Triton. They just didn’t know the circumstances or who they were meeting with Poseidon. Although, it still came as a surprise that with Poseidon came the Norse god Loki walking side by side together into the throne room. 

Loki bowed politely, “Pleased to meet you, your royalties, Queen Amphtrite and High Prince Triton of the seas. I am Prince Loki Odinson of Asgard.”

They quickly got over their shock, though, and bowed to Loki as fellow god royals, “Greetings Prince Loki Odinson of Asgard.”

Amphtrite asked, “Now what brings you here, Prince Loki.”

Loki takes a shaky go to open his mouth to speak, and nothing comes out. He tries again, and he can’t speak. He looks to Poseidon for support.

But Amphitrite cuts in warmly, “Why don’t we go somewhere more comfortable since I feel this will be a tough discussion.” 

Then, she leads them into a comfortable room with soft chairs to sit at, placed around a simple round table in the middle of the room. It's all soft blues and greens, with a sandy wall, groves carved into it like ocean waves, and a soft floor of sand with simple plants to the sides, and bioluminescence all placed smartly on the ceiling and walls like shimmering pearls to light to room up enough for comfort.

Amphirtite looks patiently at Poseidon and Loki once they are all seated down. Her gorgeous golden hair like beach-grass pinned back in nets of pearls and silk, a circlet of polished sharp red crab claws across her brow. She smiled at them warmly, her deep blue eyes like sapphires in calming pools, and her seafoam green skin was decorated in jewels and fineries. Her emerald tails draped in pearls and in silks moved calmly, but her ruby spiked fins and scales glint dangerously as her red circlet - showing her deadly grace and power. 

Triton for now remains silent, and places his seafoam green arms with golden bracers on his forearms much like his mother’s on his lap, his two green twin tails unmoving, their golden highlights much like his father’s sparkle in the room's bioluminescence. His dark blue eyes like the hidden depth of the oceans stare steely ahead, part of his hair pulled back in a ringlet of pearls and a small circlet of golden corral remains atop his head, his dark green hair behind his webbed ears cascading down to his shoulders.

Both of them, much like Poseidon, are dwarfing Loki in height and size, even though they are both around a foot shorter than Poseidon.

Loki takes a deep breath, looks to Poseidon and sees his nod, and tells them everything.

Notes:

Do I care that Finding Nemo came out in 2003? No, because comparing Poseidon to a clownfish was needed here, and was cute as heck, and I don't regret it.

Also, I decided to have Amphitrite have blonde hair instead of black because I thought it would fit her, and the mix between yellow or blonde and blue gets Triton's green which is fun.

Loki may or may not have a crush on the beautiful goddess.

Lollipop’s catchphrase - I WANNA KILL YOU!!!

Appearance -Lollipop appears similar to regular RED Jammer but without the tights under her shorts and the brown roller skates are replaced with neon pink glittery ones. Her usual long curly hair is replaced with short and choppily cut hair in messy pigtails like spikes. Instead of pink lipstick it wears dark black lipstick and her helmet actually appears as a jammers helmet in roller derby. The knee pads are still black but now with neon pink nuclear symbols and it now has sharp vampire teeth instead of bunny teeth.

Personality and behavior - Lollipop is similar to Ass Pancakes and Painis Cupcake in her behavior, only being nice to people when treated with kindness. If it thinks it’s being treated with rudeness it will take out her scythe and cut the person in half while screaming ‘I WANNA KILL YOU!!!’ But if nice to it will be moderately good (good as in will just stare at you, smile if it really likes you)

Powers and abilities - As put above, Lollipop uses a grim reaper style scythe to cut people in half it doesn’t like. It isn’t actually very strong similar to Jammer, it often struggles carrying around the weapon when not angry. It’s only able to cut people clean in half when they piss her off.

Lollipop Chainsaw is also known to ‘eat time’ the ability being to eat an hour out of the day which with fast forward time, doing it too much though could completely collapse the space time continuum and everything will disappear as everyone explodes, this has happened on numerous occasions and every time Lollipop just universe hops to another dimension where that didn’t happen. It’s on her eighth universe. Every time it does this it also gets weaker, it knows it’ll kill her eventually but it can’t stop.

Faults and weaknesses - While a hard opponent to beat when angry, it still has a few weaknesses that can be exploited to win:

* Without being pissed off enough it can’t use her scythe, it’s still good with her other less heavy weapons but not as great with the scythe

* It often thinks it can just win battles by eating time till you’re weak enough to lose, but this often just ends in another universe collapse

* Her own powers are really her weaknesses

Unsurprisingly, its name is after the 2012 video game Lollipop Chainsaw. This is mainly because the original oc, The Jammer, was based off Juliet Starling.

Now this is going to be a bit difficult because I haven’t really posted a lot of my fan content lol…I’m working on that because I love participating in fandom and I wanna get my stuff out there! But I’ll try my best to answer these!

1) Something I wrote that I enjoy still is my fic Like Clockwork. This one is short and Will-focused and invokes “Wuthering Heights” even though I am not a huge fan but it works and is what I was reading at the time. And I love playing with the clockwork metaphor with will almost as much as I do angel imagery. I was and am happy with this and I’m glad I put it out there—I think I did well with the characters and dialogue.

2) It isn’t out yet (October 3rd stay tuned) but my Royai BigBang piece lol 💀💀💀 I was going through a lot last semester. The beginning of the fic came really easy but as I hurtled towards the conclusion I lost momentum a little bit. I’m not sure if I’m happy with its ending but I do like aspects of it and I’m super stoked to be a part of the project (you all should definitely check it out @royaibigbang and get excited for this year’s fics to drop).

4) I’ve gotten a really positive reaction to Pavane For a Dead Prince(ss) which I am pleasantly surprised about. I’m sorry for being a danganronpa fan like it’s my fault…seriously though I’ve appreciated it especially because it’s transfemme Byakuya which is an important headcanon to me (it’s also FTM Makoto but that’s a more popular headcanon I think) and though the story hasn’t reached the realization part of the story for Byakuya (I update so sporadically) I’m glad people are resonating with the character development and stuff. Naegami still means a lot to me (and THH in general) so I’m glad I can make this sort of love-letter to it, even if it takes me forever to finish it lol.

5) As for other things I want people to see I mainly just want everyone to stay tuned! I’m mulling over a lot of ideas now and am dipping my toes into writing x-files stuff (I get so scared of messing up the characters especially when 30 years of amazing fic and analysis and familiarity of the characters exist but I simply must try). I have some other Royai ideas as well and some Royai AUs I’m fooling around with as potential ideas for the Big Bang next year. I’m super excited and hope you all are too!

j3j4 time!!!!! director's commentary for the part starting with "He says it again" and ending with "there really is something thrilling about being chased, isn’t there?"

Oh my god i asked for this, didn't I? I'm gonna interrogate my deeply horny art. Sorry I put this off for so long but again i got a little embarrassed trying to analyze my own smut and needed to take a break. This is gonna get long winded. Please bear with me.

He says it again. His voice shaky. “Punish me.” A beat. ��And why would I do that?” she asks, feigning naivety. “When you’re being so good for me.”

This is gonna sound funny but. I do think there is something to like. J4 actually being kinda bad at the reward/punishment framework of like a Scene b/c she's just ultimately too soft for J3. But to be fair, she is getting something she wants in this situation. He is articulating at least something about his wants to her.

And I've joked before that LJ3 is a little jaceporter coded in that there is a slightly less hostile version but still an undercurrent of "The only time you liked yourself is when you were trying to be someone this cunt might like". And in this moment (well, just prior) he's laughing, he's happy. She likes making J3 feel good, likes herself when she's doing it. She sees herself as too ugly on the inside otherwise, too unloveable and cruel and miserable. She wants to be a person, but she feels like she's getting how to be a person wrong, unless she's with him (and its her god given right to fuck up being a person, she knows this, but part of being a person is the hope that you're doing something of meaning and this? weirdly. Is the only time she feels like she's doing something of meaning)

Anyway. There's this weird dance the two of them are doing of J3 like refusing to articulate what he wants or only doing it in half truths and J4 trying to get him to speak and giving him what he wants but only to a certain extent also those wants conflict anyway. He wants a reward. He wants punishment. he wants EVERYTHING. Is J4 refusing to give him what he wants (punishment) part of their delayed gratification game? Or is it more important to satiate the initial expression of want from earlier (touch me). And obviously, she's doing it with the mage hand so. She's giving him what he wants but there's still that element of denial. That is part of the delayed gratification game, part of the punishment, but also part of her real and genuine boundaries. Her feelings are hurt in this moment, so maybe she's not ready to touch him just yet.

she has to bite back a pathetic moan of her own [...] because he moans her name so loudly, and it makes it sound real, she sounds real, like it’s something of meaning and not just a number—she’s been fighting to be real her whole life and he just willed it into existence, just like that.

Funny b/c i just made a post abt the Eurydice vibes i felt writing this scene. Anyway I know i was a total coward and didn't commit to the Electra-Ellie-El name for J4 in this bc. As much as I personally like it (and its an @neerdowellnarrator Esme Special so thank them) and use it interchangeably i'm always scared abt adding new shit to the lore... Mainly bc idk. I feel like I don't want my decisions to carry that much weight but im also terrified of my choices being rejected. I was so scared abt that with Bluejay as well. But like it seems like everyone has really taken to it so tbh i feel less weird abt it now. Thank u Esme, go pay ur respects to them.

That being said. The other reason i wanted to hold back i guess is. I really liked the idea of J3 imbuing the name "J4" with meaning even though it's just a number just because he wants her so much, he reveres her that much. The name J4 is not inherently meaninful but he imbues it with meaning. And like. Doubly so because that's not even her hand, its through use of a tool.

And there's something so... Unfair I guess. I loved the unfairness of it. Of someone else being the one to give J4 meaning. And it being so easy. Like. She wants to feel real. But she's fought so hard to be the person who determines her own life. She strives for personhood. And J3 doesn't have to fight. He just says it and she just feels real. And that's so unfair. She wanted to be the one to do that. But she'll take it. It's why she moans too. She wants it. She's used to being difficult to love. It feels so good in this moment to be wanted, special, loved—especially for being who she is, and not as an extension of anybody.

There's also the idea of like. The follower having power over the god. Putting a name to it. So that it is Borne into existence. Belief as a form of power.

And being in his head—no wonder he is the way he is, she pities him, the incessant loneliness is abated as he’s filled, as she pushes in deeper, all the other swimming thoughts are vanished completely, he simply wants someone to touch him, wants her to touch him, wants that hand to be hers so badly, in his head she’s right there with him—

There's so much like. J3 being like Jace, being like J2, wanting to amalgamate into one perfect being energy here to me. In the like. Being filled in a sexual way but also like also the. spiritual way i guess? I think thats the one thing that i can't picture J4 wanting that the the others secretly or not so secretly desire. Like. On some level they want someone, porter especially, to take over and like. ALmost live their life for them. Or Be with them always. They want that level of closeness and intimacy, and they maybe even want to abdicate their own responsibility. And. As exhausted as J4 is i do think she understands the appeal in that but she still would resist.

There's also J3 and his like. Use of touch and sex to like. Shortcut intimacy while also being terrified of vulnerability. As like. Connective tissue with Biggest Lie, J3 is always telling himself he doesn't need intimacy, he's better without it while also craving it so badly. And then being afraid to ask for it. So like. He wants to be touched, he wants to bridge a gap, he is so lonely and ignored all the time.

And this is part of a recurring thing of like. It's hard for J4 to tell if he wants her or wants someone. Most of the time, when we get in j3's head, there is a little bit of both and so im always leaving it ambiguous. However, I said this before, obviously ppl are free to read it as they like, but i do belief J4's self hatred makes her a bit of an unreliable narrator. Yes, there are thoughts of broad loneliness in j3's head, of wanting someone not just her, but as much as wanting someone vs. wanting her are both thoughts in j3's head, it usually ends up coming back to her. He wants intimacy, not just with anyone, but with J4. it's why he's always picturing her in his head when all he's getting is the mage hand.

She’s still slow, still teasing, she’s enjoying making him come undone and all without touching him, getting right into the rhythm she knows can make him keen like fucking animal, and then he does—it’s not quite the same, but she’s getting the hang of it, and he really needs to get out of her head, because she wants it, too. She wants it to be her. She wants to give him everything.

I think the like. J3 and J4 understanding each other really well thing is very present here. I call it Homophrosyne which was coined to refer to Penelope and Odysseus, when two people think alike. Like. There's the irony of J4 saying J3 should get out of her head when she's the one reading his mind. And her also craving intimacy with him.

I also think this is an LJ3 + Jaceporter parallel. J3 and Porter as people who are ravenous, they want everything. J4 and Jace as the person they truly want most of all yet are always looking past. You are all I want. You will never be enough. And that's where J4's doubt always comes in. How could she truly satiate someone who wants everything?

But the reversal could also be true. We could see J4 as Luxury Sex Object Prison Coded Porter. As a god who wants to bestow all the best onto her favorite worshipper. So he never has to want for anything else every again. (maybe in a way that is selfish on the part of the god. That way, they can truly monopolize the mind of their saint. Be the only thing they will ever need)

Like what you see? he asks, mouth slightly agape as he makes eye contact with her—the intensity of it knocking the wind out of her. Somehow even when he submits, the pull he has on her, it’s unreal. Not a message. A thought. “Yes…” she breathes before she can help herself. Dawning horror, and then, “Do—Do you want me out of your head? “Nah. I like being double-penetrated.” [...]“You are such a freak,” says J4, but she can brave running her nails along the underside of his thigh. He notices, too, gasps.

Again this is like. Calling attention to the IYWD thing of like. The relationship between god and follower being a two way street. The follower has power over the god just like the god has power over the follower. The person submitting having power over the one in control. Which is very like. J4 kryptonite. She wants to have control over her own life, and when she's with J3 she feels weak, not in control, like his mere existence has power over her.

Again, I think there's like. More homophrosyne, or J3 understanding J4. In that he knew that J4 was using detect thoughts on him the whole time. And J4's reaction being. Like. She truly does believe in personal autonomy, so she does feel terrible and guilty about this violation that she was willing to commit. (A violation that is. To take. To invade. Something she is afraid aligns herself with porter, with everything she hates)

And. Ok. I do think the DP joke is funny. Like. I will give myself that. I'm silly but i do think it's clever. This does kinda go in line with my like. I love when J3 is filthy but in my mind he's also the funniest clone and this kinda goes with that. But also, he's not lying. J3 seeks out everything. He is into everything. He wants it all before he goes. And as much as he gets off on being told he's gross and disgusting and he can make jokes about it, a part of him is truly worried those desires are too dark, too unpalatable, they make him too unlovable. J4 does affirm he is a freak as lot, like, half joking, but to me that's not condemnation. It's like. instead of being like "oh no don't worry you're so normal <3" it's like. I love you amidst all your flaws. Because of them. You don't need to be perfect. You are a perverse, but there is nothing wrong with being perverse.

“Would it make you smug if I said you do this better than He does?” “Maybe a little.”  The best part? She knows he means it, too. She'll do anything for him after this.

Listen. I love when LJ3 is good for each other but i love when they're a little bit fucked up. Like. The ambiguity of whether they can escape the narrative!!! They should be able to exist on their own terms!!! They willed this, they chose this, they want each other intentionally, but also. This is such a tie-in to Biggest Lie as well. Because in that, J3 gets off on the idea that Porter thinks he's better than Jace. And here, J4 gets off on the idea that she's better than Porter. Like. It always has to come back to invoking jaceporter. They get off on the idea of transcending their creators, but is that true escape? For them to always be tethered to Jaceporter?

There's also this like. Thing about. Porter wanting to be the center of Jace's world. Remaking jace in his image. Wanting to be Jace's one and only. And is this instinct, this desire for J4, to dominate J3's mind, monopolize it, be the only one for him. Is it Of Porter?

Gonna skip some of the stuff that's just plainly horny that i don't have much commentary on... I will say, her kissing the corner of his mouth and finally getting him off is like. AFTER the "Being better than Porter" confession which is so funny like it takes that for them to broach the intimacy. For her to fulfill her desire and give him what he wants. And like. Nice? Or fucked up? who is to say.

“Come on then,” says J4, flashing him a wink over her shoulder before turning away again. She beckons him forward with the Mage Hand as a final act before it is dispelled. Once in the bedroom, she lays herself upon her master’s comforter, her legs spread. Waiting. The creak of the door being pushed open tells her that J3 is quick to follow her, and J4 smiles to herself. Then he’s on the bed, and the sight of him on his knees, crawling toward her makes her heart skip a beat. She likes to think of herself as the kind of person who takes action, but there really is something thrilling about being chased, isn’t there?

I do like J4 reclaiming a bit of her power here. Like I know she's femdomming for a lot of this but i feel like in her mind she very much perceives herself to be on the backfoot. The wink feels like a moment where she is truly confident.

But also! The willing reversal! J4 usually being the one to act, to take control, and that's seen as an act of power in most ways, but also, it's to perform labor for someone else. The person who commands the attention, who doesn't even have to lift a finger. Do they not have power in their way? And J4 is exhausted. And she wants to be the one to will her own destiny. But that means she's always the one doing the work. Like she has to fight to have her personhood even recognized. And maybe. A part of her wants to be loved simply for who she is.

And so. In this, she wants to be pursued! Especially after so long feeling like a second choice, feeling abandoned when J3 left her for Porter. She's used to him running, returning. Very Orphydice / Persephades. Very Eurydice joining Hades in the underworld.

On a personal note. I want that for her so bad. She deserves it. She deserves to be pursued. Loved for who she is. But also. J4 wants to be her own person so badly. And yet isn't the desire to be pursued, to be chased? Isn't that so unabashedly Of Jace? Here they are, defying the narrative. Carving out their own future. But are they? Have they transcended the Starbreaker Pantheon? Or are they doomed to repeat the cycle? Are they going to make it?

- “There’s a reason [Wu’s] lived as long as he has.” Yeah, because he’s part of nearly every mythical, immortal creature in the book. There’s so many different forms of magical DNA in this guy that, frankly, I’m surprised he isn’t radioactive ❌

- “You guys go ahead. I will stay back and watch [the blades].” Wow, they didn’t even try to argue with him, huh? The DISRESPECT ❌

- Wait, why does Nya like Cole? We saw that the two were assigned as a perfect match, but we never saw hints of Nya actually liking him and now we’re supposed to believe she’s suddenly in love with both of them? What?? ❌

- Seriously though, this is such an awful line considering Jay is her canon love interest. And don’t say they didn’t know Jaya was gonna be canon because I do not believe there was a second they were actually going to make Cole and Nya a thing ❌

- I’m not even gonna sin them for tweaking Garmadon’s design from the end of last season because this one is objectively better ✅

- “Check out the new Sensei… lookin sharp!” Jay is a Garmadon simp confirmed and I really don’t know if that’s a sin or not anymore

- “SILENCE” *WHACK* Ohoh, I’m gonna like him, aren’t I? ✅

- How did Zane not notice the blades being stolen from in front of him? He clearly wasn’t sleeping, and Pixal later even says she wasn’t built for stealth ❌

- “Pixal? What are you doing?” “Discontinuing an old droid!” D*mn ✅

- Was that even a Pixal scream? It sounded a lot like Nya ❌

- “How about we take her apart to find out!” Jeez Kai calm down. Imagine what the others would say if he wanted to dismember a human ❌

- “Relax, not a weapon!” Then why didn’t they just bring them inside in the first place?!?! ❌

- “These nindroids are so much fas-“ Give me perfectly timed cuts for 400 Alex ✅

- “wouldn’t that mean shutting down Pixal too?” “Don’t tell Zane!” The ninja don’t even seem to consider Pixal as a living entity. They only even take her into account as a reference to Zane, nothing else. You can’t convince me they would be this chill about taking out the power if a human’s life was on the line. Basically what I’m saying is the ninja are racist ❌

- “We are all different, but I do not feel so different around you…”⬇️ ✅

- “Ever since we left I’ve been worried about [the students].” “Oh, Dareth’s looking after them.” Was that supposed to ease Cole’s worries cuz I’m pretty sure it made them worse ❌

- “Ya know, Cole, you don’t get the credit you deserve. You always put others ahead of yourself! I know the other ninja get all the attention but I just want you to know, you’re a good guy.” This is literally just the writers trying to convince us to care about Cole at a point in which such a small amount of the fandom actually did. I love Cole, I always have, but I think anyone who was in the fandom prior to the Wildbrain era can attest to how ignored he was as a character. This went off on a small rant so to clarify, I’m not sinning this because of how underrated Cole used to be (personally I think that’s more the fandom at the time’s fault than the show itself). I’m sinning this because it felt awkward and forced ❌

- “Don’t tell Jay.” Why? There was nothing inherently romantic about that line, or this situation in general, so what is there to not tell Jay? ❌

- “This is where all of Ninjago gets its power.” Zane mansplains something that even Dareth should be able to determine Pixal already knows ❌

- “I will call you Mindroid!” *angry mindroid noises* Worry not, Mindroid. One day we will join together and seek vengeance against all those who mock us with labels like “fun-sized” and “vertically challenged.” We are living versions of the pocket knife - cleverly concealed until the final moments in which we are revealed to deliver the killing blow.

- “Stupid technology!” Kai said, to the glass case ❌

- “oh who cares about probability!” this is character development… I have absolutely no idea where it came from or how Pixal developed but it sure is there ❌

- How unlucky was Pix that she just happened to land on the ONE laser we’ve seen throughout this entire episode? ❌

- *Mindroid breaks into office* “Great! Now they come in fun-sized!” ✅

- “This is no time for a lesson, Kai!” Actually, the climax generally is the time for the lesson, Jay

- The nindroids might have Storm Trooper aim but that doesn’t make it okay for the ninja to dodge in the worst possible way just to show off ❌

- Lloyd - beloved Green Bean - you’re supposed to cup the water in your hands, sweetie… not just stick your whole face in the pond like you’re bobbing for apples… ❌

- “This is why I took an oath of peace!” Why? So you and your son could get mauled by a giant, robotic dragon?? ❌

- Mindroid dies, and although killing him is 100% sinnable by death, this is actually a sin because he appears unscathed later on multiple times ❌

- Why does it take so long for Pixal to lose power? ❌

- “Your mission was important. I was not. I am to assist; I assisted.” The show never acknowledges how tragic this scene is. Well, it does, but only with Pixane, not Pixal as her own character. We constantly get to see glimpses of Pixal’s insecurities, but rarely see them built on or developed. ❌

- The only source of power for ALL of Ninjago is operated by this one tower and no one thought that was a bad idea ❌

- “We are compatible?” “Yes, yes we are.” ✅

- Look, Pixane is my favorite canon ship, but I still hate the way it happened. It was rushed, under-developed, and just didn’t feel right. ❌

- But also, Pixal only has feelings for Zane once it’s obvious that he feels that way about her so… recipromantic Pixal canon? ✅

Monkey Wrench is an indie animation cartoon created by Zeurel, an amazing animator that came from newgrounds and is known mainly for his vinesauce animation!! Monkey Wrench story focuses on a team of two mercenaries: ‘Beebs’ and Shrike Sánchez! The series followings them on their many merc adventures in *space*!

YES this wonderful little cartoon is a sci-fi adventure FILLED WITH ACTION PACKED SEQUENCED AND INCREDIBLE ANIMATION it’s humorous!! It’s got witty and dumb humor that makes me laugh!

Not convinced enough yet? Did you know there’s gonna be a whole lotta LORE to be seen? Little hints and puzzle pieces in dialogue and scenes that says “oh? well isn’t That interesting hmm??” So far there’s only 2 episodes up on the main youtube channel but ITS SO SO GOOD!! It’s Zeurel’s and NeatoTito (the lovely co-creator and writer of the series✨) first series that they’ve just put out into the world!! They’re learning along the way of how to make each episode better than the last and MAAAN me being the animation fan i am, I just love seeing this series just being made!! In real time!!

But whew ahah yeah!! It’s a show worth watching!

The Summer Hikaru Died Vol. 1 + 2 // Review & Thoughts

I just finished reading volume 2 and realized I did not talk about vol. 1 at all, so let's talk!

The Summer Hikaru Died (story & art by mokomokuren) is a cosmic horror story with a queer-coded complicated relationship, set in rural Japan. Got your interest? Well, you’re in for a ride!

I honestly don’t remember how I got to know about this… I think someone talked about it in a podcast episode? I remember the concept being very interesting: your friend is gone for a week and when he comes back, it turns out he’s some sort of creature that only our protagonist is aware of.

I read both volumes with a huge time gap—almost an entire year, I think?—and every time I finished one, I was just too stunned to read much of any other thing that day. It’s immersive, it’s creepy, and it has that gay panic vibe only these types of works can give. I love me some fluffy and dramatic romance, but the angsty, scary and out there stuff is what conquers me.

I’ll admit: I thought this was going to be just another BL I’d forget soon enough, so the horror aspect caught me off guard… and I absolutely loved it! It’s intense without being always present. I wouldn’t say it’s psychological horror as the horror is present, but it does not rely on cheap jumpscares. Instead, it builds its tense atmosphere, and the use of cicadas for that is amazing. I remember getting the same anxiety-inducing feeling when reading Higurashi: When They Cry (the visual novel), like the heat is getting to you.

I’m not a huge horror fan. Not that I don’t like it—I love it—but I just can’t find stuff that suits my specific tastes. This one does, and I can’t get enough of it. I love mystery and horror but I hate the kind of horror that relies on visuals to scare the reader. This one managed to have a healthy balance and it serves as the exception.

It has Hikaru’s face. It has Hikaru’s voice. It even has Hikaru’s memories. But whatever came down from the mountains six months ago isn’t Yoshiki’s best friend. Whatever it is, it’s dangerous. Carrying on at school and hanging out as if nothing has changed—as if Hikaru isn’t gone—would be crazy...but when it looks so very like Hikaru...and acts so very like Hikaru…

This story is fantastic. It’s fast-paced, and yet you feel stuck in time, glued to your seat. I sometimes even forgot the background cicada noises I’d play while reading.

This is mysterious, but don’t expect your typical mystery read. This is a slice of life existencial thriller, dealing with bizarre creatures and worst of all—your own feelings.

Mokumokuren’s art is just superb. It’s so unique that if I wasn’t already drawn by the synopsis, I would have read it for the art alone. Not only is the artstyle pleasing to look at, but the way they draw perspectives and play with the shading does wonders to the horror elements.

Also, I have to shoutout to Abigail Blackman (the letterer) and Yen Press! The way the sound effects were inserts in the panels made a world of difference, especially when it comes to the cicada sounds.

The story follows mainly Yoshiki and Hikaru, two best friends in a rural Japanese village. Yoshiki is more of a gloomy kid, while Hikaru (just like his name, “light”) is the sunny, dumb kind. This all changes after the events the synopsis presents, showing Hikaru as more feeling, and even more childish.

These two are so interesting to follow: a co-dependent pair that doesn’t want to admit it and the way this shows through a literal monster is just delicious.

The way Yoshiki feels repulsed towards his friend and his own feelings, while feeling seduced to accept something that might not be so good to him—and yet, it feels right. He misses his friend and feels conflicting feelings towards this new creature inhabiting Hikaru’s body. Is it alright to accept this as Hikaru, or will it never be the same? Are is feelings true when directed to someone who isn’t there anymore?

The way Hikaru tries to come to terms with the meaning for his feelings and what is “Hikaru” and the being’s own identity. His strong feelings of loneliness and feeling overly attached to Yoshiki is something I could definitely relate to.

While there’s nothing explicitely better about queer media, something I’ve noticed is how more subtle and metaphorical dynamics and relationships can be, either because of direct societal prejudice or because of how queer people grow to hide their feelings, in fear of rejection and humiliation. Of course, the latter can also happen with hetero couples, but the feelings of rejection that can lead to co-dependence and loneliness are just that much stronger within the queer sphere, especially amongst gay men—and it’s visceral, to the point of fitting right into the horror realm.

Dealing with the unknown can be scary, and the way mokumokuren portrays this relationship and mixes it with the cosmic horror elements is masterfully done. It feels gross but erotic—like a guilty pleasure you find as a teenager—without ever being pornographic in nature. Hell, there’s not even a kiss or explicit thoughts, it’s all a play of “will they, won’t they” for the readers to munch over. While this is a fast-paced series, it’s also a slow burn when it comes to their relationship.

The writing iself isn’t anything too grand, due to its format. You can’t expect too much of a focus on writing in a visual medium.

I’ll talk about this into more detail in the following paragraphs, but the way the writing mixes with the environment and horror elements is where it peaks. There’s occasional bolding and a play with the font sizes, making it more tense to follow along.

I’ve always loved stories set in rural Japan, but all I’ve read that checked my boxes were set before the 2000s—before smartphones and other modern technologies.

The Summer Hikaru Died is set in contemporaneity and even then, you sometimes forget it. There are occasional shows of a smartphone, and even a mention of the Nintendo Switch, but the rural setting makes it so that feels useless.

When reading Higurashi (which is set in the 80s), I always thought “man, this wouldn’t have happened if they had smartphones” but reading this now, I realize that was a futile thought. Sure, they could use the GPS tracker in moments of panic, or call a friend, but in the moment of fear and paranoia, that could only aggravate a situation. Mokumokuren takes full advantage of that: someone sneaking a glance at a message notification they weren’t supposed to see; being too scared to grab the phone…

The horror elements here were only intensified by the creative use of the format!

The concept for this story by itself isn’t anything unique: things inhabiting our loved ones’ bodies isn’t a new thing. However, the way this trope is used to explore other fears and themes is where it stands out.

The exploration of sexuality mixed with feelings of guilt for both parties; the “what if” scenarios in Yoshiki’s mind that could have saved Hikaru; and the overall way being queer plays into society, especially one such as the rural community in Japan.

It’s not uncommon for queer people to have lost a friend or two, be it to mental health or an STD, and the way homossexuality is sometimes compared to an “illness” by the townfolk, I can see the being inside Hikaru as a personification of his feelings and desires, and how Yoshiki struggles to accept them and his own love.

The series isn’t over, but I strongly recommend checking it out.

The third (and latest) volume comes out in April 16th, and I’m super excited! From the cover alone, it may focus more on the minor cast, such as the group of school friends.

In summary: this is a fast-paced (but slow burn when it comes to the main relationship) horror story, more within the cosmic horror sub-genre. It has BL elements and I personally find it to be the main topic, even if it’s not explicit. If you enjoy these, go for it!

Even if you’re not a fan of BL, I find it interesting and subtle enough most times so even people who aren’t into BL can enjoy it, as long as you enjoy slow-burn horror.

I’ll give all my starts and love to this one, as it’s one of my personal favorites! I’m looking forward to more from mokumokuren!
