Your silent protagonist doesn't have to use sign language btw. They don't have to write things down, either. They don't have to use language at all. Not every single person who doesn't talk can use words the same as you, or use them at all, so your favorite silent character shouldn't have to use what you consider a grammatical language to communicate in your fanart and fics. AAC exists. Drawing exists. Gestures and body language exist. Btw.
#i said ''your silent protagonist'' bc i feel like that'd hit close with the most people but i truly mean anyone that doesn't talk#ive seen it happen SO MANY TIMES its like ''this character never uses oral words'' and every post about them ignores it or uses sign#or they already have their own language or their language difficulties have been addressed and it STILL HAPPENS. like cassandra cain#who's like me.#inumaki toge#link#link loz#loz#legend of zelda#trainer red#champion red#red pokemon#HES MY FAVORITE HIS SPEECH ARC RESEMBLES MINE SO CLOSELY#pokemon rgby#pokemon hgss#ik sun/moon and usum are there too. so many tags#controversial one here probably but#chell#portal#cass cain#cassandra cain#batgirl#batman#fandom ableism#:)))))))))))#NOT AN EXAMPLE BC IT'S LITERALLY THE COMICS WHO MADE HIM THIS WAY BUT#JONO STARSMORE#language disorder#bi rambles#ive seen exactly one fic where red has an LD. my lifeblood. also shoutout peaks and valleys for his writing difficulties. ask me abt red pls

out of curiosity, would you consider yourself butch?
used to be a blonde underweight twink and now I'm a based jock still got the chanel bag and the sick albeit matured mind of a suckpig to prove it so I'm gonna let you decide whether you wanna call me that word just cuz I got a pussy and short hair. I promise you that there have been enough advancements made in the art of lesbian sexual dynamics in the past 50 years to broaden the vocabulary used to describe the plethora of types of masculine females.
#being called butch just reminds me of how much males have the freedom to navigate between male archetypes and how people pay attention to#the distinguishing features of these varying masculinities#but when a female is seen as masculine it all gets lumped under the “butch” category#her masculinity is seen as unnatural and therefore incapable of being considered genuine or taken at face value as it is with males.#its always brought into question instead of taken in consideration with the rest of the woman's life and experiences and her particularities#Hence... Butch is still being treated as though its a huge lesbian cultural phenomena instead of a specific niche thing#also i dont mean to invite the “you dont pass!!” anons again bc that idiot is missing my point entirely (which is that im truly not trying)#but the fact is that for the past 3 years i have found myself increasingly navigating the male social world#and discovering what it means to me as a female to have access to the ability to take my “masculinity” for granted... relax#forget about it#etc#i think thats entirely antithetical to the Butch thing which seems to rest on the tension of other peoples expectations of her#people broadly are more surprised to find out that im interested in women just as much as they're surprised that im a gym queen iykwim...#ive worked hard for this and now that ive gotten the Woman Social Role thing pretty much entirely out of the way i am living the dream#i think a large part of that is learning as a dyke to appropriate the language of gay men theres a reason their terminology had#staying power even when their scene was *literally* dying meanwhile all that seemed to survive from dyke spaces was butch n femme ??#its because theirs didnt necessitate the building and maintenance of a scene in order for the subculture to hold its head above water#their labels *largely* weren't predicated on their relationships to gender roles and its telling that for dykes it was#their labels rested on the need to simply show up anonymous n be able to easily flag whether they were looking to fuck or be fucked#alongside the set of circumstances under which they would be fucking or getting fucked or what have you#it all comes back to the restrictions of female social blah blah blah and i think the sooner we collectively set down what we see as our#responsibility as lesbians and as feminists to Be A Woman the sooner we can step outside of that#n start thinking clearly about our individual circumstances and the necessity of putting on your own oxygen mask first before helping others

who up seeing their disorder in a fictional character but feel like its not their place to put a name on it
#id have to be waterboarded before i can talk abt how i see a lot of my adhd and personality in mitsumi iwakura let alone post it#idk how to talk abt this without feeling like im talking over or invalidating ppls experiences relating with a character#someone was talking abt how ppl tie laios' autism to special interest and social difficulties but not much else which kinda flattens it#and then went into a respectful in depth analysis of other autistic behaviour that laios exhibits and it wasnt phrased meanly#its fascinating and important to me to hear someone explain a little bit abt traits that they recognized and often go overlooked#because it does help me learn more about it. but i think thats also where hesitancy kicks in when it comes to depicting it accurately#like i have adhd and some of my adhd symptoms overlap with autism (time blindness and pattern seeking behaviour) but that only means#it feels familiar to me even without having autism. on top of that traits arent always cleanly determined as being /caused/ by#a disorder. to understand my environment i compare it to something unrelated but similar to make it more familiar and for the longest time#i thought that was a personality thing and not an information processing thing since i loved playing pretend in my head as a kid#so if you make a character who experiences that hoping to reach people that also experience that and tell them its not weird or#smth youre making up like. thats the goal. ppl who dont get it arent expected to it just means it doesnt cater to them but it helps them#become familiar to it yk? since i dont have autism myself i dont feel confident i can depict it properly or explain it in my own words#but that doesnt mean im trying to dismiss it or try and cut it out completely.. ill just leave the floor open to someone who /can/#a lot of issues around fanon depictions are when smth is baselessly popularized or a characters personality and behavior is flattened#especially to fit them into a trending meme. its harmless and its supposed to be for fun but it gets tricky when you drag things that#need to be carefully explained beforehand or else it gets lost in translation. like that tweet abt 'hyperfixating' on cooking pasta#once it becomes popular language usually the original meaning is left out for the sake of simplifying it for everyone that when it#circles back theres a sort of hesitancy like. am i using it the way it was intended or am i unknowingly using the popularized version of it#actually thats probably why i felt wrongfooted during diagnosis bc it felt like i was misusing the words i heard to describe what i felt#i /know/ i see a lot of myself in mitsumi because our minds are always somewhere else and we tend to put good faith first and for me#that personal connection is enough. but idk it feels like its always gonna have to be 'palatable' first before i can talk abt it openly#mad respect to writers and creators who stick to their story even if theres the looming fear of ppl misinterpreting it and letting them#have it.. its been almost 2 weeks and i am so close to deleting that m3 dunmeshi drawing bc ppl keep saying chilchuck wouldnt have 200 HP#IT LITERALLY SAYS I MADE IT WHILE WATCHING EP 1. I USED EARTHBOUND LOGIC AND I WASNT EVEN TAKING IT SERIOUSLY CHILL#yapping

i dont watch a lot of shows, but its been a while since i saw such an emotionally charged confrontation in a bl show. i believe great acting can elevate any confrontation scene (even if the conflict was contrived) but uh here, we knew this all along. we knew the pain was coming, i did, it was delicious, and braced for impact but i still am in shambles. wei lili packing random packets of food from the house for yuan, unable to focus on eating when yuan sits with that face, getting him to pass stuff just to talk to him. a resounding 'tell me, what's wrong?'. never have siblings been so real lol. also, i deeply appreciate the character of Sanpang, cause i think he's supposed to be the reflection of society, but in a far more gentler, loving way for he actually does care for both of them. lol he himself doesn't know 'what's wrong' exactly, just that something should be cause yk it's Wei Qian. also, he's far more nicer than in the novel i've heard. and not homophobic at the very least.
#unknown the series#chris chiu#kurt huang#i dont know how to write it cause its too big for me to articulate but family dynamics in this show is#so fricking well put together and evocative#i've seen roles like wei qian or specifically 'da ge' the 'big brother' in so many movies i've watched as a kid#in my own language ofcourse#trauma ridden families where due to one or the other reason responsibilities fall to the oldest sibling before they're even done growing up#who's usually not even that apart in age with the rest of the siblings#but suddenly they're not just a sibling but a mother and father too as situation demands#like lili says at some point (not yet aired)#we have an exact word for 'da ge' in my language too lol#that also literally translates to 'big brother' in english#so i find it really easy to relate to qian#in a way that makes me feel way too much stuff#thingamabob#aa mine

Every time I think about what Ahti II would sound like I always have to metaphorically beat myself on the head, “he sounds Swedish!!! He sounds Swedish!!! HE!! SOUNDS!!! SWEDISH!!!!!” I accidentally make him British every single time
#hard to conjure up a swedish accent in my brain for some reason#well to be clear he sounds finnish to people who are not finnish but finns incorrectly clock his accent as swedish instead#this is because the language of surish is like if helsinki slang got to develop on its own for thousands of years#the merfolk population of osmeri is actually quite diverse with people all over the baltic region ehh.. “coming together” to put it nicely#its tricky to find a good headcanon voice because currently what i think is the closest is my sister doing a swedish accent lmao#wow surish. you should get your own post. im not making a whole conlang but surish is nice :)#the english name of the official language of osmeri comes from the english hearing from the scandinavians that the merfolk speak in sjösprå#sjöspråk actually meaning seaspeak which is what people around the baltic tend to call the language. surish is merenpuhe in finnish#(not to be confused with vedenpuhe which means waterspeak; a spell and the act of being able to speak clearly underwater)#sjöspråk evolved a bit. shousprok. surespoke. …surish? surish!#i dont actually know what surish is in surish. ive yet to decide! it would be nice to have a name that means “our language”#i suppose its a good thing surish is a nonexistent language but its a bit hard to come up with words that are like… almost-finnish#wait whoops. i was literally only meant to make a post about ahti sounding swedish lmaoooo anyway yeah lol#ahti II#sirpaverse#not fish

Saw a post that argues that there are some words that just shouldn’t be translated. Think suffixes in Japanese-language texts. They convey plenty of information and English doesn’t have anything close to peer-honourifics. I understand this impulse. In fact it’s a good middle option to convey information quickly: if it’s a frequently used, story-critical untranslatable word, sure, stick in a glossary.
My personal belief is that you can translate everything effectively. There’s always going to be some combination of words that creates the desired effect. Even if the word is linked into a cultural norm that doesn’t transfer, there’s going to be some kind of equivalency you can draw based on the fundamentals of human emotion. Ultimately I think it’s better to translate based on flow and naturalism while including footnotes—if it’s something like a translated novel or a dubbed show. Subbed shows are trickier since the subtitles ought to line up with the spoken words, but you still have a lot of flexibility. There’s always going to be something you can do. Take the suffixes. There are no words in English to quickly convey a relationship, but you can get around that by deploying tone and register. It doesn’t have the guaranteed result of a -chan* *denotes affection of the user or cuteness of the bearer, sometimes used ironically between friends, default for close female friends. It can still accomplish a lot.
#kelsey rambles#if you’re translating to a language. it’s got to stand on its own#much as I will go down and record exact words or look up alt TLs#ultimately: I just want something that immerses me#I don’t want to have to project an imagined version of the story on to an awkward over-formal over-literal translation#the post was about a word that conveys loneliness sun-dappling greenery and fresh water in a folkloric title for a person#simple as. ‘clear-eyed’. 1. sounds like something that would be used to honour a person#2. conveys loneliness by implying that the world at large is unable to see what this individual sees#3. evokes nature through association with the phrase ‘clear sky’#and the biological reality of an eye. you don’t get forest in there but that’s what I came up with in ten seconds.

the not directly articulated thesis of hunting the falcon is that while catherine of aragon took henry's literal virginity, anne boleyn took his emotional virginity.
#and from that point on? he was emotionally slutty.#or maybe he always had been#and it was but waiting to be discovered...#anyway there's my unofficial review#this book was a serious intellectual endeavour#yet at times irreverent in what must be the inside jokes and secret language of its own writer team (married; as they literally are)#certain chapters opened with this sense of gravity#and other chapters opened with 'during this year henry's sheets were likely literally soaked with precum.'#and you would be like ok. wow. you didn't have to do him like that.#this post is going to get flagged. isn't it .

was anybody going to tell me the bald kid is called caillou because it means a pebble smooth like his head or was I supposed to google that because of that vocabulary size quiz. like you know when you've heard a word a million times over the years and suddenly you find out it's a common noun and you need to rethink everything ever or are you chill
#anyway why do english polish and spanish have the same words but french has its own set. whats the science behind that#like i thought thats a standardized sample some words across the board from everyday items to abstract etc#dont judge me im taking this quiz in as many languages as i can to indulge 10 year old me's habits#of reading the same book in different translations#which is pog btw. the way different people dealt with translating poems in alice in wonderland literally shaped my life for 10 years#tumblr user nosygay lore drop lol#ANYWAY#x

Darling: you hate me, it's written all over your face
Reader's resting b*tch face: what?
darling says it just to annoy you lbr. bc no matter how bad your resting bitch face is, the tsaritsa's is worse. darling has had years to learn how to discern the tsaritsa's mood when shes as reactive as a statue.
#asks#pale-value#sagau#tsaritsa#darling#in the tsaritsa's defense it isnt intentional shes just Like That. shes only expressive when she wants to be unnerving#bc whats scarier then blank faced tsaritsa staring you down? tsaritsa smiling. start counting bc you have seconds left#its like 99% body language and its all extremely subtle though. its an art form atp#80% of that body language btw is her ears. its why she hides them bc they give it away so EASILY.#reader being as stone faced is a challenge to darling though. like oh worm??? bet#darling thrives off chaos bc its the only entertainment they get when ur literally g-d#especially if you do not give a shit abt them being the creator. it just makes everything Worse#they r keeping you in a container like a lab rat#also unrelated but im fully taking over darling sorry comrade. my oc now /j#ive been having brainrots abt worldbuilding w darling. they arent even an unreleased character like tsaritsa. im going 2 eat a brick#WHAT WORLD AM I BUILDING HERE. MY OWN PERSONAL HELL?????????#yes. i am. thanks for coming 2 my ted talk gn

for the past couple years ive been slowly. slowly learning beginners japanese and its very fun and im enjoying it a lot but also it has made me painfully aware in ways i wasnt before of how much my specific vaguely ontario accent makes me make out sloppy style with my vowels. i am going at those vowel's tonsils. i am doing things to diphthongs you wouldnt even believe.
#come and meet the letter people. come and visit the familyyy#literally like i dont mind my ontario accent coming through my japanese thats okay BUT i do care about making sure im saying what#im actually trying to say. and sometimes without realizing my vowels have left off somewhere else in the middle of my word#turning it into some manner of other word. i accidentally said picasso bought the mona lisa instead of painted it the other day <3#i dont mind my mistakes but like. i still wanna do my best!!!!#its blowing my mind though. okay as an anglophone here the only way we'll learn anything about our own language is by#1) just having a natural interest in linguistics in general and/or 2) learning a new language#much to my mothers frustration when she came here in the 70s not knowing any english. even the english speakers couldnt help her#BUT luckily i was both interested in linguistics and learning new languages so i got to learn more things after preschool LOL#but like i remember taking french throughout highschool and being like. wait a god damn minute. i understand english grammer now?#it was bizarre. learning japanese phonetics as well has made me realize what on earth i do with my vowels. actually the entire way i talk#i didnt pay much attention to it but in my head i hear everything as my voice but with perfect north american man radio voice pronunciation#which it turns out. is not what my actual voice sounds like. its not even thaaat different its just different Enough. uncanny valley accent#although the reason i specify vaguely with my vaguely ontarian accent is because#in my area half of the native english speakers say stuff one way and the other half a different way. like within the same neighbourhoods#people always giggle at the way i say bagel. in my head i do picture it as bey-gul. but the second it lease my mouth its become BAG-ul#no one in my familiar says it like that. i dont know where it came from. i cant even stop it. im forever BAG-ul. forever.
