For Christmas I got Portico by Leah Koenig, which is a book of both recipes and essays about the culture of the Jewish community in Rome; I used recipes from Portico to cook my New Year's feast in 2023, but I didn't own a copy until now. I've been selecting recipes I want to try, and I had most of the ingredients for this one so it came first -- this is Pasta e Ceci, chickpea stew. You simmer chickpeas in a sauce of seasoned diluted passata (strained tomato puree) and then mash some of the chickpeas to thicken the stew, adding pasta (in this case ditalini) towards the end.
I made some modifications -- I added some meatballs I'd made last week, and when I tasted it at the end I felt it needed a little herbal sharpness so I added some shredded basil. It's very simple and filling, sort of like a less sweet baked bean dish, and this amount (a halved recipe) will probably feed me for a week. Next time I might add some caramelized onions, and while the recipe calls for water to be added to the passata I think probably replacing half the water with red wine would add a nice depth to it.

i know at this point i shouldn't be surprised at nationalism- but why is it so obvious in the wikipedia/google intro blurb of bicultural & multicultural celebrities.
#audrey hepburn was british-dutch. heck she was the daughter of a dutch duchess. but i checked like 10 languages of wikipedia pages#and apparently she's only british-dutch instead of just british in the intro blurb of the dutch & german wikipedia#sure it's mentioned. but the intro blurb. that's the summary of their identity right? is it suddenly not their heritage anymore?#sandra bullock has german citizenship and grew up there... but she's only german on german wikipedia not english#BUT timothee chalamet is french-american on wikipedia? is he simply too french to hide it?#bruh i just found out that the van halen brothers are dutch-indo! theyre called american on wikipedia. unfair to them & their fam#like i know it doesn't seem like much. but why are some people identified by their cultural identity and when are they claimed as a certain#cultural identity without being able to have a say in it#i remember stephen fry articulating it as well. he's claimed by the public as quintessentially british#kind of negating his jewish heritage#americans put a lot of focus into labels like irish-american italian-american etc to refer to their cultural identity#but when they're famous enough this cultural identity is scrubbed out of their personal blurb and BOOM! theyre american now#idk its very interesting to notice. esp when looking through different language's wikipedia pages

In the fall of 1943, a group of Italian doctors (left to right)—Giovanni Borromeo, Adriano Ossicini, and Vittorio Sacerdoti—got together to come up with a fake disease called Syndrome K.
Their goal was to save the Jewish people of Rome who had fled to their hospital seeking protection by spreading rumors of a deadly, disfiguring disease that was so contagious that the Nazis would want to be nowhere near the vicinity of the patients.
Concocting a fake disease also allowed the Italian doctors and hospital staff to easily distinguish actual patients from the Jewish people who were seeing refuge. “Syndrome K was put on patient papers to indicate that the sick person wasn’t sick at all, but Jewish. We created those papers for Jewish people as if they were ordinary patients, and in the moment when we had to say what disease they suffered? It was Syndrome K, meaning ‘I am admitting a Jew,’ as if he or she were ill, but they were all healthy ... The idea to call it Syndrome K, like Kesselring or Kappler, was mine," said Ossicini in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Stampa in 2016.
"Kesselring" was a reference to Albert Kesselring, the Nazi commander who was in charge of the occupation of Italy. "Kappler" was a reference to Herbert Kappler, a Nazi police chief in Rome who was responsible for the killings of 335 hostages (including 57 Jews) during World War 2.
There were special rooms designated for those infected with Syndrome K and Jewish children were encouraged to cough to discourage Nazi inspectors from entering. “The Nazis thought it was cancer or tuberculosis, and they fled like rabbits,” said Vittorio Sacerdoti in an interview with BBC in 2004.

The world’s first printed book in Hebrew was Rashi’s commentary on the Bible, printed by Abraham ben Gart in Reggio di Calabria, Italy, in 1475.
Unfortunately, very little is known about the personal life of Abraham ben Garton. Most scholars believe he was born in Spain, and emigrated to Southern Italy's Calabria prior to the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. Many other Spanish Sephardim also emigrated to Calabria following the expulsion.

The 1475 edition Abraham Garton created and employed, for the first time, a typeface based on a Sephardic semicursive hand. It was this same style of typeface that a few years later, when commentary and text were incorporated onto one page, would be used to distinguish Rabbinic commentary from the text proper. Ultimately, this typeface would be known as Rashi script.

something that really irks me in video games is this certain treatment of religion. specifically: when there is an explicit religion or belief system (explicit here meaning it has a name, describes specific beliefs or practices, or has its Creation Story described) and it's the Only One. no thought given to what other cultures might believe, hell, sometimes there's not even variations in the belief itself. worst though, is when this One Religion is also implied, or directly stated, to be True and Correct. Even whenever the game itself just. treats it to be True and Correct, and often so do fans!
of course, there's often a Singular Exception to this in a token athiest (or anti-theist) characterwho is often grouchy, grumpy, or Troubled in some way shape or form. their story arcs tend to revolve around them seeing the Truth of this particular (and only) religion, in a way that is often Miraculous.
a good example of this would be a certain popular farming sim which i'm not going to name because i'd rather this post Not explode.
in this farming sim we are only introduced to this one religion, something that even the ancient beings and cultures (possibly otherworldly) are shown to believe. some charaters believe more strongly, some believe more passivly, and one activly does not believe and drinks beer, is grumpy and grouchy, and generally a mean character at the start. we get Lore about this belief system, including excerpts from its religious text, items that mean to imply this belief system is True, and there's even a place of worship. as far as i am aware, in the base game we're simply not shown any other beliefs aside from the Lack of Belief (and look how good That character has it (no shame to him of course, i love him, but unfortunatly it is a fact of his character))
The entire thing, quite frankly, strikes me as Incredibly Christian. The lack of consideration of other religions, or what they may or may not believe, and how these religions are tied to different ethnicities and cultures and historie. thestrong beliefe that this One Religion is correct, absolutly so, and furthermore the importance placed upon the fact that it must be correct. The almost Evangalism of these atheist characters being shown to be depressed and miserable without this One True Religion, until their lives are made brighter and happier, usually after witnessing something that cannot be explained in a way Other than the One Religion being True and Correct. This last part doesn't always happen, but it does occur with enough frequency.
It's also incredibly frustrating as well with the homoginization of things, because in real life many many *many* religions are tied to herritage and culture and identity of shared history! It's frankly a touch disturbing seeing such a prominent lack of diversity in a setting, with such a heavy emphasis on all the characters sharing This Religion. No different histories, no different accounts, no different cultures.
i, personally, would just like to see more religions presented in video games, without one of them being Directly Confirmed to be the Good and Correct one that the other characters should be shamed for Not Following
#don't get me wrong: i'm a religious* person myself! i'm just saying. perhaps we diversify. and stop it with the stereotypes#(op was raised with like 4 or 5 different religions. i am inventing shrimp religions here)#but yeah i've noticed this especially in more fantasy settings and. yikes#cw religion#cw christianity#i still like the video game i discuss here mind you but. it fucking irks me man.#queue the music#*it's complicated. it's really complicated. interfaith and jewish and all the Italian Stuff is just. listen. it's complicated#ask to tag
