I just feel like getting this out in the world even if no one sees it.

I am currently studying Political Science and Environmental Geology with an emphasis on conservation. I am senior in college. My dream was to work in government. I’ve loved parks my whole life and I wanted to work to keep our beautiful parks safe.

I was told by my advisor today that despite what I’ve been working toward my entire college career I should change course and instead of parks service I should look into the oil industry. She said that as it stands I have no career, because our federal government and the systems that protect our environment are being gutted.

This isn’t about me or any of the countless others who are getting fired, or are being told that their dreams just got defunded. It’s about how we have turned away from everything for which America stands.

This isn’t just sad it’s dangerous.

This is no ordinary time, and we must understand that what happens now will take years to recover from, or perhaps will be irreversible.

In unprecedented times we must be unprecedented citizens who stand up for our country, not what it has become, but what it is meant to be and what it means to us.

For me, I will continue on my path, and if takes years of eating ramen and not having a real bed frame I will get a job and fight for our country and the beautiful land on which it stands.

i totally support not catastrophizing but the executive orders DO have an immediate impact in some cases! namely, for federal employees! donald trump is now the uberboss of about 3 million employees who he *can* just boss around and fuck over, and there's very little we can do about it unless we're lucky enough to be unionized.

EDIT: i removed the “trump refused to swear on the bible” point because it was being taken as me being an offended christian. i’m not christian, im agnostic. the reason i included it in the first place is because he’s the first president in history to ever refuse to swear on ANYTHING. meanwhile his “conservative christian” followers had no issue with this, and decided to continue to scramble for excuses instead of admitting he may not be as religious as he claims he is. i figured taking that point out entirely is probably better than filling this with an explanation in the middle of the other important issues.

i watched the livestream of trump signing executive orders and answering questions from the press. here are some of the big ones + other things mentioned today:

trump declared a national emergency at the southern border + is getting the US military more involved in stopping "invasions including mass migration"

no one can declare asylum in the US

all existing appointments for people wanting to legally become US citizens are canceled

birthright citizenship (aka the 14th amendment) is now gone

ICE sweeps beginning "soon," not specifying when (though there are rumors it's starting tomorrow in sanctuary cities such as chicago)

mexican cartels are now designated "foreign terrorist organizations" and trump is not opposed to US troops entering mexico to eliminate them

he restored the death penalty for "crimes committed by illegal aliens"

biden had signed an executive order attempting to stop cops from using chokeholds or doing no-knock warrants. trump just revoked that order

25% tariffs on canada and mexico begin on feb 1 2025 — expect a lot of produce imported from mexico to get more expensive soon

tariffs on china will begin soon, not specified when

trump said he intends to take back the panama canal, did not specify when or how

january 6 insurrectionists are to be immediately released/pardoned
