Ugh, filtering out social contacts sucks. A friend from high school, who I’d been close to during my anxiety stuff, reached out on facebook, and we started talking again. Now that I’m seeing her newsfeed-reposts, it’s a lot of religious-related content. It was fine at first, because that’s her business. Then I saw some stuff that was shady about lgbt+ topics, and it got squicky for me.

I won’t be broken-hearted if we disconnect again. I’m just pausing, formulating how I want to phrase things. “I appreciate that you reached out to me, but I think I’m in a place now where I’d like some distance again. I’m happy to still send messages. Otherwise, I need to keep things close-to-my-chest. It’s my anxiety stuff acting up again, not a reflection on you.”

Which is true. I cut off ALL contact with people after I moved, even the good people. I already relieved my guilt, when I explained that to her. But yeah, having to actively curate my social circle wears on me, emotionally. I am getting better at turning away from people (politely, quickly, without guilt), thankfully.

hey got some important news. the affordable connectivity program that helps poor and disabled people afford internet is going to run out of funding by april 2024 if we can't convince congress to renew it

i know emailing and calling politicians often seems like a waste of time, but this is gonna hurt alot of people (myself included) if this program is allowed to disappear. we really need to raise some awareness and get this program the funding that it needs. ACP is a game changer for literally millions of people. this is the only way many homes can even get internet, and in this day and age internet access is pretty much a necessity for almost everything. its gonna be a huge blow to have this vital program taken away from those who depend on it.

It's honestly frustrating that I've seen non-Russian queer people almost bragging about how they would be illegal in Russia, labeled an extremist or terrorist. Russian queers are in danger, their government has made it clear where it stands, and it's made this effort for the better part of a decade (even longer, perhaps). This will kill people, don't mistake this for a quirky little proclamation from a government, akin to somebody saying the sky is pink. Russian queer people were already expressing their fear, and the least we can do now is express our love for them, and advocate with them.

Russian queer people, I love you. I love you all so much. I am so sorry, I cannot begin to express the grief that I feel, and I hope that you are safe. Words cannot encapsulate how I feel as a non-Russian, and I cannot hope to comprehend how it feels to actually be in this situation.

This is not something I usually talk about, but I feel like in the character writing landscape some people mistake traumatic experiences and elements in a character’s backstory for actual character depth. What I mean is, if you only tell me that a character’s parents died and they suffered at the hands of an abusive authority and their ex stabbed them in the stomach, well, that’s cool, but how does all that reflect on their character? How did all of those experiences and the rest of their numerous life experiences shape them, make them who they are? What sorts of relationships do they have, what do they fear, aspire to be like, love and hate (other than exes stabbing them in the stomach)?? Those are questions that are not answered with what happened in the past. Similarly you could make a character that literally had nothing bad happen to them ever in their whole life and I think you could “still” make them very interesting and extremely fleshed out and feel as real as you want to. There are several ways to make people care about characters!
