In what will probably be 300 words, I am spending weeks researching.
I love applying my research skills (because it is a skill). I go into a frenzied mode, gathering notes and links and documents and references around me until they are piled so high you'd never know I was at my desk.
Except for my hand which reaches out once and a while to grab a coffee.
Will the scene be perfect? No. Nothing can be. It's impossible to be perfect.
Then why?
Because it's important to me to at least TRY to write this one part with respect for the source material and the traditions where it originated from.
it’s actually so wild to me that this fairly quirky YA type show gave both of its main characters deaths that can, in one way or another, solidly be considered hate crimes. they were both flat out murdered as a result of being A) gay and effeminate or B) brown (south asian, specifically) and you could argue whether or not those kids thought of it that way in the moment or whatever but the bottom line is that they would not have been in the situations that killed them if they weren’t of their respective minorities. like legitimately that is a ballsy choice for this kind of netflix show, let alone for the two Main Characters, and i respect it big time
actually it's kind of funny how people will say Alex's fatal flaw is that he 'doesn't ask for help' and that it's his determination to handle things on his own that leads to his deterioration and eventual death when his whole introduction to the present-day timeline was a very literal cry for help that simply went ignored
tumblr and social media in general has created a bizarre version of the free rider problem where not only do people not financially support websites that they use daily, but they actively shame the people who do. the obstructionist rider problem.
like the typical free rider problem applied here would be like - ao3 is supported by donations, and only a fraction of the people who use the website donate. ao3 meets its goals, though, so thats fine, but then theres a weird crop of people who are like - not only are we going to continue to use ao3 and not donate towards its maintenance, but were going to belittle anyone who does, despite the fact that ao3 would not exist anymore without donations
so not only are you a free rider, you are standing in the doorway of the bus trying to stop other paying riders from getting on, which begs the question of like, why are you on this bus to begin with, if you dont pay for it and you dont want other people to pay for it, what exactly is it that you want this bus to do.
i send my friend suggestions of tourist places to see in his new country (his contract was extended, lucky him!) or messages about friend of friends i have living there that he could maybe meet for fellow americans to talk to, and his response is always that he doesnt have time. and not in that exaggerated way that people do to seem busy. but in that bone tired way i recognize from him here in LA, that i recognize in myself.
getting a handle on mavis is kinda 😵💫 bc on the one hand she's an empath (literally) and is shown to generally have more emotional intelligence/maturity than dr🅰️x/nebs/rocket combined, but at the same time she apparently saw no problem at all whatsoever w kidnapping kevin 🥓 for peter 😭 which is like???? i mean maybe those two things can be true at the same time but like... How. 😭 is she an empath or is she okay w taking people against their will to give as a present to her brother ?
Grggrgg I hope. For the few people who do read that fic (I assume more people might go back to it since the context is important for an rgb-centric thing lmao). That it's really obvious that Nene is 100% not in her right mind and having an extremely severe trauma episode. Obviously that doesn't make what she did okay or what she tried to do okay, but like. Idk. She is deserving of understanding and care
when will genshin give us any sort of information on the underground intelligence network? we don't even have a name for it... GIVE US A CRUMB. A SINGLE ONE, I BEG.
I don't wanna fight exporting a half done picture so here's a picture of my tablet I took with my phone (very scuffed lol, I know)
Long post 🦆
Alright, I do not like moping for long time when physical ailment strikes, so today I:
went and got a brace to keep my thumb still when I'm not using it
looked up a couple extra stretches for my wrist
set a timer on everything I did to be no longer than an hour
finally applied that "drawing from the shoulder" thing my professors try to hammer in
And, as of right now, I feel much better than I did 24 hours ago :D it's definitely still hurting a little, but I don't think I'm gonna have to take more than the recommended amount of ibuprofen and drown my hand in ice just to go to sleep now haha. I'm still very mad this even happened >:( buut freaking out about it last night made me extra proactive about it today, so all is well (relatively)
I was able to work on that project today, I'm very excited to show it off so here's a progress picture :3. I'm only just now realizing I made the left eyebrow/hand shorter than the right lol. Ran out of time for the feathers on the coat, but I think it's in a good spot right now. I only had the face drawn when I picked it back up today, so I made a decent amount of progress. I can't make any clean lines right now (see above), so this is really still just a draft. Hopefully I'll get it done by Monday night!
Last thing; I learned that clip studio can actually record time lapses for you, and doing it this way didn't freak out my computer, so voila (flashing lights cw, I flashbang myself a lot by accidentally removing the background):
It took me so long to draw out the top lol (I made his face really fluffy, and idk yet if I'm gonna keep that change or not)
Just wanna drip by and say Incendiary has made itself a permanent resident in my brain.
Your writing is absolutely amazing, every scene got me gripping my seat in excitement. Seeing someone write a Pyro-focused long fic, let alone texas toast is so so so rare, I think I've only read 3 (including incendiary) that I've liked so far.
I love this little fire guy with all my heart, and I absolutely adore how you didn't make him too much like a child like how many mischaracterize him. There's the childlike wonder in him but he is capable when push comes to shove and I like that a lot! Every single characterizations in this fic is wonderful, I would love to give Engie a little kiss on his bald head.. he's so adorable.
I'm probably rambling but I just love this fic so much. I'm dealing with semester's midterms, stressed as all hell and this fic has been keeping me going. I practically cheered when I saw chapter 10 update in my inbox lmao. I would love to maybe make some fanart when I have the time, should I just tag you on this site?
Thank you so much for writing Incendiary dude, no kidding when I say it changed my life. I can't wait for the story to unfold! Please take care of yourself and rest well. Good luck on the job hunting as well!!
Omg stranger whoever you are, I just about teared up seeing this in my Inbox -
This is the most grandest, heartfelt comment I think I've ever received in my entire writing career and my heart is GUSHING rn!!!! I was literally out running errands when I saw this and I couldn't stop thinking about it -
When I joined the TF2 fandom in like... oh god, 2014 I think, I was really shocked to see throughout the years that there weren't many Pyro-centered stories out there, which blew my mind. Like how could there not be a deluge of fanfic for Pyro, who is this extremely mysterious, multi-faceted character with so much room for interpretation?! When I first watched Meet the Pyro, I KNEW I had to write a novel about Pyro. Who they are, where they came from, and what happened to them before the events of the gravel war. Massively inspired, of course. But still nonetheless, an origin story that could very well be canon if squinted at, hehe.
This rings true for texas toast content, too!! There isn't a whole lot of it out there and it makes me so sad - I love their dynamic so much! When Incendiary is finished, I do plan on writing some more texas toast oneshots on my AO3 to fill that void. <3 One of the plans is to write a short story about their relationship during the gravel wars as well, that takes place after the events of Incendiary. (plus, Incendiary has only just started to crack the surface tension of the slow burn, and it's only a matter of 1-2 chapters away from when the texas toast really starts showing through so there is that to look forward too as well. (。˃ ᵕ ˂ ))
also I literally hollered when I read your comment about Pyro's characterization in this story especially, because THAT is THE ONE THING I have been working so incredibly hard towards holy shit - when I tell you the amount of stories I've read that writes them off as this danger-child that needs supervision - which don't get me wrong is not an entirely bad thing!! they do have this massive childlike side to them, but there is also so much more to them than how the fandom perceives them, not taking into much consideration how they typically canonically act in the comics/in-game, and taking into LARGE consideration Meet the Pyro. I was reeling when I realized that a lot of people seemed to completely forget about that interview. I could go on a whole rant about this sdfghjkl but yes, Pyro is definitely more than capable when push comes to shove! they are in a war, after all ;)
and engineer, oh man. I love that soft Texan so much. :') I could talk your ear off about him too!
man I am definitely rambling now, but I literally cannot even express how genuinely happy I am receiving this message, it means the actual world to me. and FANART?!?! oh my god YES - you can definitely tag me here if you do make fanart for Incendiary!! I would be BEYOND honored omg
Thank you so so much for brightening my entire year with this feedback literally - I'm so honored to have you here as a reader and a fan. <3 And I'm sending you all of the luck with your midterms!! You've got this!!
The reason people like storyboards better is because current Chelsea is an awful twist villain, literally only motivation is " I'm a flipping Mermaid" and a one-dimensional character , the twist villain is obvious, the trident is a Chekov's gun nobody's denying that, the I'm Nerissa is a Hans-level asspull, it has nothing to do with shipping, the twist trades their friends dynamic for nothing in exchange. People don't dislike the twist because of shipping, people dislike awful twist villains.
The reason for the switch was Shock Value and a way to have Agatha without blood on her hands, as per the Instagram posts.
You can tell it's a last minute switch by the murals, where the mermaids are depicted as adults. Good luck portraying the mermaid-kraken war in the future when they're all teenagers.
I think everyone was going into the movie knowing that the mermaid was going to be the villain, especially because of the marketing it had. The movie outright told us mermaids are selfish and bad. The fact that the mermaid is selfish and bad in the end like we were told isn't shocking... We were told... and you also just said it was obvious... Hans was a shock value twist villain because there was no foreshadowing leading to it. Chelsea/Nerissa was simple and predictable but I wouldn't say shocking.
Having Chelsea also be a teenager and pretending to be Ruby's friend as she manipulates her into getting the Trident doesn't add anything substantial to the narrative. You still have her manipulating Ruby for her own gain, all that's really different is that it isn't as strong of a connection to the narrative of "Ruby and her relationships with women in her life" because we've now made her a peer instead. The exact same plot happens... Ruby listens to the idea, thinks it's good, gets the training, gets the Trident, oh no the mermaid is evil, they all come together to beat the mermaid. Like her age has zero impact on the overall "the mermaid is the bad guy" plot of the movie, there will still be a friendship montage and bonding and whatnot because that's the hustle she is pulling, but having her be older ties her story to the theme better than if she was a teenager. Her being a teenager gives the story nothing in exchange.
I've seen people saying it adds depth to the character of Chelsea because then she's not only trying to kill all the Krakens and rule over everything as a tyrant Queen, she's also trying to avenge her mother! You know, the mother that also wanted to overthrow and kill the krakens, so she found a weapon that could do it so that she could be tyrant Queen of everything. It sure is an extra layer to the character, but is that really a layer you guys want? I get that people love to pull out the morally-grey card and have stories do the "both sides are bad" thing, but for the info we got in the movie, the mermaids were the instigators. And once again, the info we have on the mermaids being "opposed and in hiding" comes from our bad guy who, even if she was a teenager, is still a liar and manipulator.
Like as far as real life goes fuck monarchies and the ruling class,,, but this is a movie aimed at younger kids and we have no reason to doubt the lore from Grand Mama being wrong while we have all the reason to doubt what Chelsea says no matter her age.
With what was in the movie, even if we went back to cover more of the war to flesh out teenage Chelsea and her motivations, the Trident would still be your Chekov's gun, and the villain Nerissa would still have the awful motivation of "I'm a flipping mermaid". This would add a story theme of 'history repeats itself' which is something I don't think they were aiming for.
If they kept blood on Agatha's hands by having her kill Nerissa, it would totally add depth to her part of the narrative and how she relates to her mother and ran away so Ruby wouldn't have to grow up in a post-war warlord household setting. I would feel bad that she got blood on her hands when she may not have wanted to. I don't feel bad that she killed someone who was very much trying to kill her people on purpose in a bid for power.
And for your last bit, of it being a last minute change because the murals don't look like teenagers. Let's just put aside the fact that they are stylized. Are you trying to say that adults can't look young like that? That there aren't adults that appear younger than their age because of whatever various reasons there are that cause that exact thing to happen? For mermaids it might just be a quirk of the species. But I will not have anyone using some form of "they look like a teenager so they can't be an adult" as some sort of proof on my blog because being an adult mistaken as a teenager has been a good fucking chunk of my life. I go to a restaurant with my family and we get asked "do you need a kids menu?". There are many middle schoolers taller than me. If people really look at my face they guess I'm around high school age, physical appearance plays a lot into perception of age and having someone who is extremely short, and cis female with absolutely zero signs of boobs makes 14-16 really popular estimations. They are very much wrong and have been so for over a decade. So I personally find it incredibly possible that mermaids might just look like that.
finished swtor update earlier today and im still thinking like. tavon gripping petra by the shoulders: do not trust the empire. do not fucking trust the empire. DO NOT fucking trust the empire.
Very picky about how people write reconciled Crowley and Rowena and even MORE picky over how people write reconciled Cas and Claire. These are the two absolutely devastating spn relationships that you just do not fuck around with in my opinion. Reconciliation plots for them can be done well but if you’re going in on either dynamic without giving the experience of both sides equal consideration then as a writer you have already lost
So I guess it’s time for me to advertise to the entire neighborhood how insufferably neurodivergent I am by blaring a very specific playlist on a portable speaker while I ride my bike around the neighborhood, wearing very specific clothes — holding my hands, face, and posture in a very specific way — and pray to Satan (not really… I’m agnostic just like someone else, unironically) they understand what I’m trying to tell them with the music, and make the connection between the name I’m alluding to and exactly what that name means, and put two and two together that the name will happen to them if they take any pamphlets from my father seriously and decide to convert to the path of “everlasting life on a paradise earth” ahahAhAHAHAHA I AM MAD SCIENTIST!
