What I did instead: wrote 1200 words of a brand new wip that’s already too involved for its own good, and tacked a few hundred onto a February ficlet

For the writing prompts:

“W-who did this to you?”

Buck shouldn’t have shown up at Eddie’s door like this. Not today, not like this. But he has nowhere else to go.

His hand trembles before reaching forward, knocking once, maybe twice. It definitely slides down the wood after, and he has to support himself on the concrete wall to avoid hitting the floor.

Behind it, he can hear Eddie’s steps. He’s talking to someone on the phone, but it seems shallow. He thinks he’s about to hang up.

“Eddie-,” he tries to call, but his voice is faint and undetermined.

Please.

Please open the door.

Then it opens.

The scene in front of him is out of a horror movie. “Buck?” Eddie says, eyes wide, heart in his throat. His phone hits the tiles, a click ringing in his ear.

The man is showered in red. Blood that he can only assume is his going down his body and staining his clothes. He blinks. His lip is busted. Oh, dear god. His knuckles are- his wrist is broken.

“Help,” Buck says, and this is the day Eddie thanks his military training, because he’s able to catch Buck in his arms before he passes out.

It’s possibly hours later that he wakes up. He’s laying down on something, either a couch or a bed, and his head is heavy with pain. He tries lifting his arms but something is pinning him down. “E-Eddie,” he calls, unaware the subject of his need is sitting right in front of him.

“Who was it?”

His eyes adjust at the speed of slugs, and he has to force himself to sit up. He blinks until the world makes sense. “Eddie?”

There’s tears. Salty, whimsy, slow tears going down Eddie’s face, but he’s never looked less sad. Buck gulps. Eddie’s angry.

“Who did this to you?” he asks, breathing heavily. He’s sitting on a chair, legs spread and elbows on his knees. He’s covering his mouth with his fists, observing down Buck’s body.

He hesitates. “Eddie-,”

“Buck, for the love of god, who did this to you?”

This is his fault. After everything Eddie said, after all the things he warned him about. This is his fault.

He tries to move his wrists. One’s broken for sure, the other feels… twisted. He sighs, wondering if maybe he’s in less pain now that his receptors are going wild, focusing on too many alarms at once. “I-,” he starts, cutting himself off.

Eddie wastes no time. He rises from the chair and sinks back down, kneeling in front of Buck and grabbing his face with both hands.

Buck realizes he doesn’t know how to treat him now that he’s so incredibly… unglued.

“Tell me,” he pleads, but it’s an order. He knows him too well. This is the last lock before he unleashes a monster he hasn’t seen in years. “Tell me before I find out myself.”

Buck breathes, glancing down at Eddie’s lips. It’s only a moment he allows himself glory before spilling his guts with truth.

This is his fault.

“I told my dad about you.”

do you happen to enjoy fairy tales as much as (character) Miss Raven does? I got the feeling not just because of- well, you choosing that as a big characteristic on her, but also bc of how you sometimes talk about your fav characters in scenarios where they have "princely" attitudes or stuff like that HHAHSHSHSH plus I think a certain amount of that type of writing shows in your pieces (which I love!!!)

if the answer is yes, then I wanted to ask: what kind of dairy tales are your favorites? is there certain motifs you specially like?

YES 🤡 I’m super into fairy tales! One of my favorite Disney movies is Enchanted, but I also love the Shrek universe (Shrek 2 and Puss in Boots 2, my beloveds) and Ever After High before it quietly got cancelled. I listen to fairy tale-themed songs (I’d recommend Cinderella Step by Daoko; been listening to that a lot lately), read fairy tale retelling novels, collect fairy tale themed blind box toys… All of it 😭 And one of my favorite anime ever is Princess Tutu, which references a lot of classic ballet and fairy tales ✨

As I mentioned in this post, Miss Raven (the OC) is not meant to be a self-insert, but she is in part informed by my own tastes since I did create her. I injected her with my love of fairy tales, but tried to incorporate that in a way that makes sense. While she was still an actual bird, she often people watched and then daydreamed about being a part of “that world”. Her wild imagination eventually leads to this rose-colored expectations of how great “that world” is. She’s expecting a fairy tale but is then slammed with the reality that the students at NRC aren’t exactly the perfect princes she was imagining. Miss Raven copes with it by being delulu daydreaming and penning stories~

Before TWST corrupted me, I love Love LOVED princely/knightly characters… and butlers and bug brother-types still I blame that in part knowing me enjoying fairy tales so much. snvsjwbskwkekdbsk I-I didn’t realize that that kind of dreaminess bled through into my writing 😭

I think it’s pretty obvious by my blog name, but I love Alice in Wonderland for its whimsy and nonsensicalness. Many of the motifs that commonly appear in Alice (mushrooms, card suits, tea and sweets, talking flowers, clocks, white rabbits, etc.) are charming to me. It’s a big reason why I was super into the White Rabbit Fest event. Anything Alice-inspired… I’m so tempted to grab 😔 I once went to an afternoon tea inspired by this story, which was so fun! I’d like to go again someday, and this time with my TWST plushies.

Some other stories I like are Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and The Ugly Duckling (though this one is more a fable than a fairy tale). I also quite like stories told in ballet, such as Swan Lake and Coppelia. If you squint at Miss Raven, you’ll notice that she has elements from each of these stories. I just really enjoy stories with themes of self discovery and/or getting lost but then finding your way. Again, this is also echoed in Miss Raven’s own growth and development journey.

He had seen you dancing before as part of the numerous schemes to get Vox Machina money, so of course learning how to dance was just an excuse to get close to you

OR there was a boxing match that could get the group more gold and he had to show off when you were watching

He likes his “alone, quiet” time in the workshop, but having you with him is also refreshing. There’s a genuine interest to yiur demeanor when you’re admiring his new invention sketches

All about that quality time baby! Any setting that’s intimate for you both is just perfect for him; filled with kisses, cuddles, adoration, just anything that leaves you a melted puddle of affection

Butterfly decoration tutorial

Ohai. Today I bedazzled my living space and realized other might want to as well, since I found it pretty quick and easy to do.

Here's a tutorial in case you'd like one.

What you'll need:

stable cardboard in a color of your choice (roughly 300 g/m²)

pencil

scissors

sticky tape

enough fine motor ability to draw a butterfly, cut curves and a fine strip of paper

(optional) childlike whimsy

Instructions:

If you have a big piece of cardboard, fold it in half and cut it until it's roughly the size that you want your butterfly to be. Then fold it in half one last time.

Mine's roughly Din A5, but you can go bigger or smaller.

Optional: fix your folded cardboard in place with a piece of sticky tape. This will make it easier to cut the butterfly symmetrically since nothing moves while we cut.

Draw one half of your butterfly. You can wing it (hah) or use a model. If you find it hard to draw a butterfly from scratch, you can:

print out a butterfly the size of your cardboard, cut it out and use it to trace the silhouette on your cardboard.

or: pull up an image of a butterfly of your choice the size of your cardboard on a screen that's big enough. Then carefully (!), lightly trace the silhouette with a pencil using the screen as a light box. Cut out and use it to trace the silhouette on your cardboard

Cut your butterfly out from the bottom up until you get to the base of the antenna, then remove the scissor. The antenna is very fragile and it's easy to cut it off by accident, so we won't cut and turn at the same time, instead start cutting again from another direction.

Cut the antenna from the top downwards towards the top of the head of the butterfly. Then stop.

Open your butterfly and finish cutting the antenna individually on each side. Cut from the border of the cardboard towards the top of the head of the butterfly. Then stop.

Finish up by removing the still attached cardboard between the antenna with a careful snip.

Roll a piece of sticky tape with its sticky side out and place it on the middle part of the butterfly which bulges outwards.

Technically you can now also erase the pencil lines, but I didn't bother because no-one will see them anyways on black cardboard (and they face away from the viewer)

Congratulations, your butterfly is now ready to take flight 🦋✨

This is kind of late, but I have a ton of tags drafted and I'm slowly working through them when I find my motivation. Here's the response for my current WIP: A Tale of Frost and Flames (still a working title)

✨What was the first part of your wip that you created? ✨

It all started with a knight kneeling before his princess and promising to be her sword and to mow down any enemies that stand in her way. Now it has evolved far past just that.

✨If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?✨

Definitely a powerful instrumental intro with a touch of whimsy.

✨Who are your favorite characters you've made? Why?✨

Taliesin is certainly a favorite of mine because I wanted to create a strong morally grey character who is also a dragon. Although I'm attached to all of them, especially the ones I have yet to introduce. Rhidian because he's a himbo who just wants to be a good person and is stuck being the 3rd son of a king, so his job is to be married off to make an alliance. Despite this he wants to make his arranged marriage work.

✨What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?✨

Anything with a heavy romance element in an in-depth fantasy world. Other Media with political drama, faefolk, magic, and dragons.

✨What has been your biggest struggle with your wip? ✨

My biggest struggle has been with my pacing. Trying to find the right pace for plot points to unfold themselves. Just recently I decided that my pace was going too fast, so to slow it down I'm refocusing book one into more of a focus on where Eirallia is now/who she is rather than pushing her too quickly into evolving into the character that I imagine for her. I'm slowing it down to focus more on her character journey, but it's been a struggle to take a step back and to make that choice.

✨Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!✨

Regular animals so far. There's natural wildlife in the kingdoms. As for Melione...there are a lot of creatures in the wylds. Animalistic and not. There is another character that I have in mind (without a name yet), but she has a secondary form that's cat-like.

✨How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)✨

Horses and carriages in the human kingdoms, along with ships and other vessels. Melione is a special case where there is an abundance of magic. Some have wings and other gifts that can get them around quicker.

✨What part of your wip are you working on rn?✨

After some rough decisions, I split the draft that I had been working with into the beginning and end of book one. So right now, I am working on Eirallia's slow processing of grief while she is being overloaded with responsibilities that don't belong to her in a place where she knows that she isn't wanted.

✨What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?✨

It's my hope that my themes of adversity and overcoming will shine through and draw people in. Along with the progression of growth that all of my characters have to go through in order to find who they're meant to be when not being forced into a mold created by their parents and the society that they live in. There's a heavy theme of grief and trying to fit into a mold made for someone else. Basically, Eira's life is a mess. Her love life, her family life, everything is a mess. She's learning along the way how to be herself while processing big losses in her life.

✨ What are your hopes for your wip?✨

My hopes are pretty simple with this one: To be able to physically hold my wip in my hands.

Comfort movie(s): Fantasia! I used to watch this movie with my Nan almost everyday when she would visit me, it was always one of my favorite things to do even if I was afraid of Chernabog. It's ridiculous how deeply I've memorized it, I could probably lay here with my eyes shut and watch it in my brain without missing any sections („ಡωಡ„) NATURALLY Peter Jackson's EXTENDED LOTR Trilogy BABYYYY - I cry about 10 times each movie but Frodo is a massive role model for me and I love him a lot! When I found out that I share the same MBTI as him I was like ╭( ๐_๐)╮and then I cried. Don't get me started, I won't stop - this is for your own good. Hercules is another big one, it's just such an easy watch and it makes me happy. I have watched it an embarrassingly amount of times with @magicshadowkitten

Comfort show(s): I didn't really watch TV as a youngin, but I was able to finally get into shows during college - D. Gray Man is one of my favorites! JJBA too - I have a lot of good memories with my friends from both of these! @bells-of-black-sunday showed me Over the Garden Wall and it quickly rooted itself as one of my favorites, its the ✨whimsy✨

Comfort clothing: I really adore feminine, flowy dresses/skirts, and coordinating outfits before hand. I never really had the opportunity growing up to explore a lot of fashion, and I have found out that I absolutely adore looking like a lil fairy, so I never really learned how to put together outfits on the fly. So! I actually have outfits preplanned with accessories, shoes, and bags too because if I don't I won't know what to do. ⁽⁽ଘ( ˊωˋ )ଓ⁾⁾ Its kind of embarrassing but I've accepted it as part of my neurodivergency; its also a lot easier for me to shop for an outfit vs items that can mis and match into various ones. I also work from home so, if I can dress up I will! It makes me feel pretty

Nights in White Satin - The Moody Blues ━━ This song is actually one of my favorites but the reason why doesn't involve me at all? When I first heard it I was in the car driving with my mom, and she got so giddy and explained that this was the song playing when she met her ( still! ) best friend at a bar almost 25 years ago. Tolkien The Divine Comedy ━ Dante Alighieri ( nostalgia ) ━━ I don't really read comforting books so I don't feel like I can continue the list as the books I read have existential content that is not at all comforting! I tend to read stories like Blood Meridian or No Longer Human, and I tend to not revisit them quickly because of the content (ಥ﹏ಥ) because even if I enjoy them I'm a big baby

Comfort game(s): League of Legends ( don't judge me i play with friends and dont flame ) : tbh this is the only game I actually play the rest I mostly just watch playthroughs of because again the content I like to watch is existential as well and I am a very easily frightened person! So ━ I really liked watching my best friend play Resident Evil! I also watched @bells-of-black-sunday play Bugsnax and it is SUCH a cute game, it has amazing characters and a really interesting plotline - !

I have been thinking hard about this, but going forward, I'm going to be handling Lisa like I will Philip Carlyle when I add him - by ✨not✨ having her storyline as her ACTUAL main verse. So she will kind of be an 'oc' in some degree, like how Kylie handles Red from TTS LMAO. I will have a big option for an SSO verse for Lisa, since I know I definitely know a couple others still enjoy that. I'm not taking that away, ofc. It will simply be an AU for those who are interested to delve into it (I will still try to make it as digestible as possible for myself and you). But lbr, the biggest majority here don't even know what SSO is. And those who do try to learn (bless your souls) will find out it's totally overwhelming due to how...badly the storyline had been handled and treated. It had been ripped apart in different places with new things glued in without any forethought about how it would change up the plot. Thus it doesn't make sense. And then some parts of the story are barely hanging in there by a single thread... It's just a big oof and it's unfortunate. And I TOTALLY agree, it's confusing as hell and I even get overwhelmed by it. But I love my country princess and she deserves more than what canon is giving her. Thus, SSO won't be her MAIN verse anymore. Her main will be a lot more digestible and rpc friendly, and fandomless. But no worries, I won't take away the horse whimsy 😊

I love all the comments I get so so much 😭 but there are specific types that just get me squealing and I have three beautiful examples hete

You've got the essays with the quotes from the fic which are really rare but my FAVOURITE, I love when people just ramble their heart out about the fic in the comments it's so cute 😭 then there's the comments on angst fics that just make me giggle, then there are the full caps love letter comments that also MELT MY HEART EVERY TIME

This was so difficult, every time I get a comment notif I freak out 😭

There was also one nasty nitpicky comment I got on one of my first ao3 fics that I didn't take ang advice from but it did shape me as a person and I still giggle about it to this day! Not gonna mix that with these adorable comments tho

Hmmmmm I have a lot but probably that I think walphemia was a thing in their school days...people get real aggressive about that one!

Honestly it depends so much on my mood at the time but for the most part I like my fics canon-adjacent (/canon universe) with a sprinkle of whimsy and a bit less character death

Every so often I'll be in the mood to go completely off the rails for something original and far from the canon universe though so it really depends

3. Description of the worst take you’ve seen on tumblr

There’s a few but the one I’m always haunted by is one that was like “I think we can ALL agree that Ryan smokes weed based on this random line that has literally nothing to do with anything!” Like come on dude keep me out of your grasping shit 😩

8. Common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

This is really nitpicky lol but like I don’t think Simon and Samantha were together long enough for her to be like HIS MOM. Like that works for Hazel since Tuba has literally raised her since she was a baby but it’s not the same for Simon. I’m not trying to say that him being abandoned by her wasn’t traumatic or anything, but I don’t think it’s even kinda enough to justify him being more ✨fucked up ✨ than Grace (since that’s usually what people use this but of lore to do)

This is also a nitpick and honestly this probably isn’t as common anymore. Maybe idk I’m not toooo active with this fandom nowadays. But idk sometimes people acted like Ryan was just way more popular and cool than he really is? In the show I mean. While in actuality it seems a lot more like he’s constantly CONSTANTLY trying to be liked but just. Fails at it. He gives off this vibe that he’d be trying to joke around with the popular kids and they’d laugh more at him than with him, and that he’d just kinda take cuz at least he’s getting attention. He also just does a really good job at keeping up his confident persona even when no one is watching. The only time you see him not perform is when he gets abandoned by Min a second time and he just gets really fed up. Then playing in the bathroom with Min is what makes his number go down, what makes the door unlock, what makes the party successful, WHAT MAKES HIM HAPPY. Cuz the only attention that matters is the positive attention he gets from Min because he cares so much about him and he’s satisfied with no one else watching if it means they can be together. I mean a big part of his character arc is him realizing that chasing attention all the time isn’t gonna make him happy, it’s being with people you love. Also none of what I just said is coherent im sorry I am so exhausted 😵‍💫. Basically I’m a Ryan Akagi stan and I go silly thinking about him

25. Common fandom complaint that you’re sick of hearing

That b4 is bad because it was a low stakes plot. Like sorry that this show has to be so goddamn fast paced that we never get to have filler content and so they gave us a season that was more lighthearted in between what would’ve been two very heavy seasons. Sorry you have no whimsy and are bitchless and don’t understand the power of friendship and playing gay music. You’re not invited to my birthday sleepover and it is because of this 😤
