I really like this apartment, plus I don’t know if I’ll be financially able to move next summer when the lease is up, so I might have to renew again for another year. But I really don’t wanna be here right now.
On top of that a bunch of old people with nothing else to do have been outside banging on buckets for months now protesting a homeless shelter that’s being built in the neighborhood. I wasn’t able to hear it from my house until recently, but I’ve been home all weekend trying to study and all I can hear is banging. I called 311 on Saturday and they stopped for a while, but now they’re back

China revealed this week it aims to spend more than a billion dollars to bolster manufacturing and domestic tech in a bid to remain globally competitive, while divulging little new support for the struggling real estate market.
Industrial support clearly ranked first on Beijing’s priority list for the year ahead, according to three major plans released this week as part of China’s annual parliamentary meetings.
One of those reports, from the Ministry of Finance, said the central government would allocate 10.4 billion yuan ($1.45 billion) “to rebuild industrial foundations and promote high-quality development of the manufacturing sector.”
While that’s down from the 13.3 billion yuan earmarked for the same category last year, the sector overall gained greater prominence. In 2023, plans to spend on industrial development came second to support for consumption.
“Unlike other economies that went through a wrenching adjustment in their housing market, China’s investment rate isn’t falling,” HSBC’s chief Asia economist Frederic Neumann and a team said in a report Friday. “Instead, [capital expenditure] is shifting towards infrastructure and, importantly, manufacturing.”[...]
Chinese authorities in 2020 intensified a crackdown on real estate developers’ high reliance on debt for growth. Property sales have since plunged while developers have run out of money to finish many projects, cutting into what was once about 25% of China’s GDP when including related sectors such as construction.[...]
Despite widespread attention on whether Beijing would bail out the property sector, real estate got no mention in the finance ministry’s spending plans, and limited attention in a ministry-level press conference about the economy during the parliamentary meetings. Instead, the housing minister was included in the lineup for a press conference about people’s livelihoods.
“Supporting the modernization of the industrial system” came first in the finance ministry’s report, followed by “supporting the implementation of the strategy of invigorating China through science and education.”
Within that second priority, the finance ministry said it would allocate 31.3 billion yuan for improving vocational education. Amid high youth unemployment, especially for university graduates, electric car company BYD and battery maker CATL are among those working with vocational schools to train staff for their expanding workforce.[...]
The report from the National Development and Reform Commission, the top economic planner, reiterated government plans to support some developers’ financing needs — under the eighth item on the priority list that called for preventing financial risks. The government work report presented by Premier Li Qiang gave real estate a similar level of prominence.

China will improve home sales in a "forceful" and "orderly" way, Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Ni Hong said on Saturday (Mar 9), as weak demand in the country's beleaguered residential property market persists.[...]

But China will insist that "housing is for living in, not for speculation" when formulating a new development model for the sector, Ni said, reiterating an official line against property speculation.

ATLANTA (AP) — A new reactor at a nuclear power plant in Georgia has entered commercial operation, becoming the first new American reactor built from scratch in decades.
Georgia Power Co. announced Monday that Unit 3 at Plant Vogtle, southeast of Augusta, has completed testing and is now sending power to the grid reliably.
At its full output of 1,100 megawatts of electricity, Unit 3 can power 500,000 homes and businesses. Utilities in Georgia, Florida and Alabama are receiving the electricity.
Nuclear power now makes up about 25% of the generation of Georgia Power, the largest unit of Atlanta-based Southern Co.
A fourth reactor is also nearing completion at the site, where two earlier reactors have been generating electricity for decades. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Friday said radioactive fuel could be loaded into Unit 4, a step expected to take place before the end of September. Unit 4 is scheduled to enter commercial operation by March.
The third and fourth reactors were originally supposed to cost $14 billion, but are now on track to cost their owners $31 billion. That doesn’t include $3.7 billion that original contractor Westinghouse paid to the owners to walk away from the project. That brings total spending to almost $35 billion.

The third reactor was supposed to start generating power in 2016 when construction began in 2009.
Vogtle is important because government officials and some utilities are again looking to nuclear power to alleviate climate change by generating electricity without burning natural gas, coal and oil.
“This project shows just how new nuclear can and will play a critical role in achieving a clean energy future for the United States,” Southern Co. CEO Chris Womack said in a statement. “Bringing this unit safely into service is a credit to the hard work and dedication of our teams at Southern Company and the thousands of additional workers who have helped build that future at this site.”
In Georgia, almost every electric customer will pay for Vogtle. Georgia Power currently owns 45.7% of the reactors. Smaller shares are owned by Oglethorpe Power Corp., which provides electricity to member-owned cooperatives, the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and the city of Dalton. Oglethorpe and MEAG plan to sell power to cooperatives and municipal utilities across Georgia, as well in Jacksonville, Florida, and parts of Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.
Georgia Power’s 2.7 million customers are already paying part of the financing cost and elected public service commissioners have approved a monthly rate increase of $3.78 a month for residential customers as soon as the third unit begins generating power. That could hit bills in August, two months after residential customers saw a $16-a-month increase to pay for higher fuel costs.
Commissioners will decide later who pays for the remainder of the costs of Vogtle, including the fourth reactor.

Serbia’s Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Goran Vesic, has signed a contract with Affinity Global Development’s director Asher Abehsera on revitalizing the former Army General Headquarters in Belgrade, demolished by the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999.
Affinity Partners is Jared Kushner, former US president Donald Trump’s son-in-law’s, investment firm. It has $2 billion in funding from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, among other foreign investors, media have reported.
“We are very excited,” the New York Times reported Kushner as saying in an interview in March about planned projects in Belgrade and Albania. “We have not finalized these deals, so they might not happen, but we have been working hard and are pretty close.”
The former military HQ is in the Belgrade city centre, right across from the gvernment building.
According to the ministry press release, Vesic said the government had leased the premises for 99 years but did not specify at what price.
“The investor has assumed the obligation that, if he does not complete the investment within the period specified in the contract, he will return the land and what will be built until then to the Republic of Serbia without compensation,” Vesic said after signing the deal on Wednesday*.
The press release said the investor will also be obliged to build a memorial complex “dedicated to all the victims of NATO aggression” from 1999 on the plot.
“The memorial complex will be financed by investors and will be owned by the Republic of Serbia, which will decide on the program content of the complex and will manage it,” Vesic said.
The design of the memorial complex will be determined at an international architectural competition.
Abehsera said the project includes a unique aspect of cooperation in which Serbian architects and designers will be invited to submit their ideas for the Memorial Centre.
Kushner previously confirmed plans on X (former Twitter) to invest in this complex as well as in two locations on the Albanian coast. The samer New York Times report in March said that Kushner been working on the Balkan deals with Richard Grenell, who served briefly as acting director of national intelligence under Trump and also ambassador to Germany and special envoy to the Balkans.
According to the NYT, the investment in Belgrade will be a luxury hotel and 1,500 residential units and a museum. It also reported that Trump himself had showed interest in working with this complex in 2013, but Kushner claimed he did not know about this.
The former Yugoslav army HQ was severely damaged in two 1999 NATO air attacks, beween April 29 and 30 and between May 7 and 8. Part of the premises were demolished between 2014 and 2017 for security reasons.
Information that a US company will take over the demolished HQ was first revealed by the Serbian opposition in March, drawing criticism because of suspicions of corruption but also because of the damaged HQ’s architectural and cultural value. It was claimed that the land on which the HQ lies was being leased free of charge.
The building was constructed in 1965 and designed by the famous Serbian architect Nikola Dobrovic.

Veer Towers, NV
Veer Towers are twin 37-story condominium towers within the CityCenter complex, located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The inclined buildings were designed by Murphy/Jahn Architects and tilt in opposite directions at a five-degree angle. Veer Towers opened on July 15, 2010, and is the only all-residential property at CityCenter. The property includes 670 units, divided between the two towers.
Veer Towers was announced in October 2006, as part of the CityCenter project by MGM Mirage. Perini Building Company served as the project's general contractor. The 37-story towers rise 480 ft (150 m), and tilt in opposite directions at a five-degree angle. Both towers use a parallelogram-shaped footprint.
Rebar errors were discovered in the towers during construction. By 2009, the issue had been remedied by wrapping fiberglass jackets around the columns. Veer Towers was originally meant to open with the rest of CityCenter in December 2009. Completion of the towers was delayed, however, opening instead on July 15, 2010.
Veer Towers was designed by Helmut Jahn and his design firm, Murphy/Jahn Architects. Lobbies and public spaces were designed by Francisco Gonzalez Pulido, an architect at Jahn's firm. The lobby design includes metal and exposed concrete walls. The lobby walls of both towers feature mud drawings, titled Circle of Chance and Earth, by artist Richard Long. He diluted mud that he brought to Las Vegas from the River Avon in England, and applied it to the walls with his hands. The corners of each tower are lit in subtle neon by an LED system, programmed by lighting designer Yann Kersalé.
Because of its environmentally friendly design, Veer Towers received a LEED Gold certification on November 20, 2009. The tower design includes yellow paneling on the glass exterior to reflect sunlight and reduce energy cost.
Veer Towers is the only component of CityCenter that is dedicated solely to residential space. It has a total of 670 units, with 335 in each tower. Units range from 500 to 3,300 square feet (46 to 307 m2). Upon opening, condominium owners had the option of renting out their units.

In Brazil, a nature reserve near Rio de Janeiro is being threatened by a tourist resort
Overflown by butterflies, scrub vegetation thrives on this eight-kilometre-long unspoilt beach nestled between the sea and the lagoon. The restinga of Maricá, just over an hour’s drive from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, is a habitat with unique biodiversity – already described by Charles Darwin in the 19th century in the notebooks of his voyage to the Americas. On 6 April 2023, the soundtrack to this heavenly setting began to crackle. For over a month, the usual sound of rolling waves was accompanied by the to-and-fro of construction machinery along the coastal path. A luxury resort, designed by the Spanish company IDB Brazil, could be erected there by 2026.
The master plan for ‘Maraey’ not only includes hotels and residential buildings, but also a shopping complex, a conference centre, an equestrian club, an aquarium and a golf course. According to the estimates of the Maricá Restinga Researchers’ Forum, the development could draw up to 300,000 visitors a year, or as many as 8,000 cars a day.
While the advertising boards planted in the middle of the dunes promote it as “the best sustainable tourist and residential destination in the Americas”, many researchers and environmental associations, whose conservation campaign began some 15 years ago, are warning of the threat to local biodiversity.
The site is part of the Mata Atlântica or Atlantic Forest, a tropical rainforest declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, stretching from the Brazilian coast to northern Argentina. It is one of Brazil’s most extensively studied restingas (the term used to describe this type of sandbar covered in vegetation influenced by the marine environment). “It is one of the rare remnants of this ecosystem associated with the Atlantic Forest in the state of Rio de Janeiro,” explains Anderson dos Santos Portugal, a biologist and professor at Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ).

Woodstock Tower, in the center of the complex, is the tallest tower of the group, and was originally topped by a flèche, a gothic spire. Tudor City's original shops included three restaurants (providing room service for a fee), grocery, liquor, and drug stores, a barber shop, and beauty parlor.
