Imagine an ask series about the Greek gods
And that was my way to transition to this:
I wanna make an ask series about the Greek gods
Will anyone engage except for maybe my mutuals? Probably not
Do I have a story in mind? Nope
Will I possibly do it anyway? Absolutely yes , cuz I need to motivate myself to start drawing more and I don't have the mentality to make a comic
So ig ask if you're interested? Idk how this works WILL WORK ON IT 👮
P.S. working on redesigning the gods
2P.S. I came back from the underworld, Persephone says hi

Batboys x reader who is a game/singer streamer
So I'm assuming that s/o is a singer + game streamer from what I can see soooo yeah! I think I went to focus on the gamer part than singer though. Also I could only do this for Dick, Jason and Tim because 😭 sorry ;-;;;
TT o TT
Batboys with a game (mostly) + singer s/o
Dick Grayson
Don’t even get me started on how hype Dick’s gonna be. You game??? And stream?????? Epic-
Dick has played video games with Tim before it’s just that he sucks at playing the modern one sometimes-, so he probably wants to do co-ops with you and maybe join your streams and play with you.
He sucks ASS though in Among Us because he’s bad at lying when he’s imposter and too trusting when he’s just a crew mate. He’s so funny though when you record him while playing with you and your other streamer friends.
“Awww, look at me and s/o walking together and building snowmen! We are so—”
*Kills him* “…” “s/O WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME ARE YOU TRYING TO BREAK UP WITH MEEEEEEE????”*loud sobbing*
Obviously, no, it’s just what you had to do as an imposter and you have to apologise to your sulky boyfriend.
Fun fact: bought your two of those matching cat ears headphones and he’s so sappy, dear god- he loves those earphones.
Also your voice?? IT’S SO GOOD??? You made your own songs and that’s so cool!! No wonder your fanbase is so big, damn-
And he’s obviously your biggest fan! <
Jason Todd
He’s trying, he really is. Because the last thing he played before he died were Game Boys and then he awoken to Wii Games, Nintendo Switches and whatever the fuck those online games are.
Those sus game ads he clicked randomly made him question what happened when he was still dead-
Jason thinks it’s pretty cool you stream gaming content and all, although don’t ask him to play any RPG with you because he’ll rage quit. He will go insane.
Jason keeps insisting on wanting to join your streams in Among Us but like come on- WE ALL KNOW HE’S GONNA START RAGING MORE-
When he gets killed, he calls the imposter a “Joker” 💀 Sometimes you have to calm him down and tell him it’s their role as imposter to do this. Also, when he gets imposter, he’ll kill everyone except you. Like he’s your bodyguard or something and everyone’s out to get you. You don’t even need to be imposter. If you did kill him before, he’ll kill you back though-
He’s okay if you let him play Minecraft together though, he finds it peaceful (on creative mode).
Listens to your songs on repeat while he’s repairing vehicles or hear it live on your stream when he’s reading. Wholesome supportive boyfriend stuff. <3
Tim Drake
Immediately follows all forms of social media you have, and give subs to every time you go live and stream. No hesitation.
He thinks it’s cool you stream games and all, something he wished to do but just doesn’t have much time to do so, and that he has no idea how to start up a fanbase anyways so-
Tim would join your streams every once in a while to play with you and he doesn’t mind any sort of games, he’s pretty good with the controller… well, maybe RPG. Because if he’s doing a multiplayer game like with Genshin needing to join servers and all, most of the time, people wouldn’t listen to his plans and end up dying and then he goes berserk. Only you listen s/o… wHY?? WHY DOES NOBODY LISTEN TO HIS STRATS????
Also, cat ears headphones?? He has one and he looks so cute in it and would ask if you want one too- he only wears those headphones in private though, or in front of you.
Anyways, Tim loves your singing too! Would listen it live or hear it on Spotify if it’s available. If you sing covers, it’s gonna ruin him. He can’t listen to the original track anymore because it’s just not the same-
Overall, gamer boyfriend you got here. <3

hi!
so
I’m a minor
I’m queer
I’m pro Palestinian
and if you’ve got a problem with that, with all due respect, fuck off.
I HAVE AN INSTA NOW LOOK
I aim to type in all lowercase or some weird combination of lower and upper case but I rarely use capital letters at the start of words, I don’t know why, it just seems aesthetically pleasing.
uhm

✨ interests✨
Musicals, especially Les Mis and Moulin Rouge, Hamilton and Six are awesome too
music? I suppose? it depends what’s happening with it
bothering the fuck out of my friends
being as gay as I possibly can
simping over people cause I can and cause they’re sO ATTRACTIVE LIKE WHAT WHO ALLOWED THEM TO BE LIKE THIS
les mis
enjolras, specifically.
more specifically, modern au enjoltaire fanfiction it’s beautiful and the epitome of perfection
marauders
cats. I love cats.
did I mention les mis
languages? I’m learning French and german in school, and according to my teachers I’m good at it, which I’m not so sure about, and I learn Swedish on duolingo

✨music✨
I mean my music taste moves around a lot but some of it is Madilyn Mei, EPIC the musical, musicals in general, Chappell Roan is cool, Leanna Firestone, but other than that it jumps around a bit
I do play instruments but I’m not too good at them I’ve managed to get to grade 7 on one of them and I think I died during the preparation for the exam and now I’m being slowly dragged up from hell it’s not fun
𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊
✨bOOKS✨
I love reading, and I used to read loads but something happened and I don’t read too much anymore which is quite sad but some of my favourite books/series are:
AGGGTM - Holly Jackson
The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins
Harry Potter - that one blonde bitch who abuses her power constantly
Powerless - Lauren Roberts
Gwen and Art are not in love - Lex Croucher
Heartstopper - Alice Oseman
𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊
there more but I can’t remember, which probably isn’t great, and there were some gay books that I read for the gay but I can’t remember their titles or authors which is awesome but they were great
I mean just generally, I tend to be very opinionated and can go on about something for ages, maybe because I have a lot to say, or maybe because it takes me way too long to get to the point
If you’re a pedophile or a groomer or any of those other horrible things or discriminatory in any way whatsoever please stay away from me thank you kindly
I think that’s it I’m not sure
oh I really like making friends but I suck at doing it because according to my friend I have the “crippling inability to have a conversation” and I also have zero social skills and tend to not like people but making friends is great
most of my posts are either a lot of reblogs, having conversations with my mutuals, or les mis stuff that I thought was funny in the moment.
people who should be mentioned cause they’re great:
@unhingedyetstillhere this is Leyla she’s mentally disturbed and one of the gayest kids I’ve ever seen she’s also one of my kids but I have way too many of those
@noahher this is Noah Noah is great we have many conversations and he gave me a pet ferret that I have forgotten the name of I should go find that
(edit) i fOUND IT HIS NAME IS FREDDIE
@k-is-for-potassium I just met them but damn they’re awesome
@forever-bi-panic also just met but they’re so cool and really nice and goes hand in hand with @nu-get who’s also exceedingly awesome
@im-a-skeleton-in-your-closet is up here too, they’re great and they send asks that make me happy :D
@bleep-bloop-boo FELLOW MADILYN MEI ENTHUSIAST IS COMPLETELY AWESOME
@feernflower I tag them in every tag thing I get even though I’ve never interacted with them properly (I’m sorry you seem so cool) and they’re a marauders fan who posts cool stuff go look at it
@nothing-but-glitter-and-lashes HELLO this is my sister she’s great and her blog is cool (I’m in your walls)

Any updates on relationships within the gang? Any improvements?
I don't like Ink very much. I've come to the realization that he could've taken me out of my au at any time, but he just...chose not to? CORE Frisk offered to take me to the Omega Timeline when my au first collapsed, but...they never came back. I would've gone with them if they had come back. You know, I told Nightmare no at first too. But he came back. I think Dream was too scared of me.
Its funny, really, how the most wanted people in the Multiverse, for good reason, are the only ones that have actively tried to help me? That just seems...twisted to me. They aren't that bad, once you get to know them. Gosh, people are going to say I'm brainwashed. I'm really not! Epic and I have started hanging out again, and Nightmare was the one to come up with the idea.
Killer...I really hope he doesn't read this, but I've grown to really like sparring with him. He's a funny guy, but there's also more to him than that. His jokes don't bother me as much anymore.
Dust showed me his comic book collection, and he has really good taste! He's whooped my ass at video games quite a few times. His schizophrenia is an issue, but the others know how to handle it, and I'm learning too.
I met Horror's brother the other day. Horror was really protective of him. I think I understand him a bit more now. He's snarky, a bit of an ass sometimes, but he still cares, and that's a difficult thing to do.
Nightmare...is different. I guess that comes with being immortal. I still don't know much about him, but neither do the others. I don't think Dream ever really knew him either. He told me once, on a bad night, "I suppose we both have shitty parents, don't we?" I guess his mom wasn't the greatest at raising him. But he's done so much for me. For all of the guys. I think that I'm starting to relax. It's...nice.
Gosh, I guess I rambled a bit too long. Hope this answers your question?

I think one of the big differences between Star Trek and Star Wars is that (intentional) silliness is baked into the canon on Star Trek in a way that it's really not on Star Wars.
Like, there are moments of levity in Star Wars (and things that aren't supposed to be funny but are), but it's written as a counterpoint to the big sweeping epic saga going on in the foreground. Like, behold Luke Skywalker, off on his Hero's Journey against the forces of evil! Also featuring a gay robot with anxiety and his peddle-bin pal. If the took the silliness out of Star Wars, it might not be as good, but it would still be legible as a series.
On Star Trek, on the other hand, there *is* no big, sweeping epic that's supposed to absorb your attention, and so the "serious" bits have no pride of place over the "silly" ones. Episodes where the Enterprise has to play a tense game of cat and mouse with a Romulan bird-of-prey or where Jim needs to let the love of his life die to save the future stand co-equal with episodes where the Enterprise is overrun with purring balls of fluff or where the crew needs to short-circuit a conman's sexbots by staging absurdist plays for them. And if you took the silliness out of Star Trek then it wouldn't be Star Trek anymore; you can't have utopianism where everyone is dour and serious all of the time.

For the horror skeletons who would have children, let's say they have two children, a boy and a girl, the kids are hanging out with their dad until there dad went to go do something and by the time the kids look up there dad isn't there anymore and they frantically look around to find him but no luck... but uncle is here
How would uncle's react to their niece and nephew clinging to their side following him like lost ducklings because they can't find his brother?
Horrortale Sans - So, funny story. He was looking for Willow too. Since he saw his brother's kids were looking for him too, he followed them around so they lead him to his brother. Now you're all wandering aimlessly in the farm. Oak doesn't even know what he's looking for anymore after ten minutes and is just confused.
Horrortale Papyrus - For Asgore's sake, not again! Willow goes to search for his brother but can't find him anywhere. That's pretty common, Oak just randomly disappears sometimes. However, it also means he won't be back before ten minutes or four days, which can be a problem. Willow will take care of the kids for now, but he's a little stressed now. He hates it when his brother does this.
Horrorswap Sans - Uuuuurgh. Nugget didn't plan to talk to his brother today and he feels so awkward right now. He was fine just with their monthly conversation, why does he have to be the one bringing the kids to their dad? Nugget is kinda leading the kids like a border collie leads sheeps, towards the house, trying to encourage them to go there by themselves so he doesn't have to talk to his brother.
Horrorswap Papyrus - Pumpkin is always happy to see his nieces/nephews but is much less enthusiastic about seeing his brother. However, he's a bit concerned and angry about the kids being by themselves. He knows his brother is not the best with children, but still, they were in the middle of a field! What's his problem? Don't you know children need supervision? Pumpkin is anxious and nervous now, he just leads the children to the house so they can all wait for Nugget there.
Horrorfell Sans - I mean, he COULD bring the kids back, but that's no fun. So what they're all going to do is play a game. Copper climbs a tree with the kids and they all watch poor Chief completely freaking out, screaming his kid's names and trying his best to push his wheelchair in the mud to run after them. When Chief notices though, he is NOT happy. He's not talking to his brother for three days and refuses to stay in the same room he is in. Copper thinks that's hilarious actually and doesn't regret anything.
Horrorfell Papyrus - He sighs, then takes his phone and texts his brother to ask him where are the kids. Copper immediately answers that they're absolutely with him. So Chief calls him and asks him to let him talk to the kids. As Copper is panicking and trying to justify himself miserably, he just lets one of his kids talk to him, then tells him the kids are at home and that if he doesn't want him to tell his S/O, he better do all the chores in the house before 6 p.m. It's 5:45 p.m. right now. Chief hangs up and chuckles like an epic villain. He can't wait to watch his brother cry at his feet for him to not tell his S/O. Guess what? He plans to do it anyway. He doesn't care if he does all the chores, he just wants to cause chaos. He just wants to remind his brother from time to time that he's still the annoying little brother and that him getting married doesn't change that.
Horrorswapfell Sans - He jumps out of his bones when a random hand grabbed his clothes. He wasn't expecting that and he's a little shaken. What the hell?! Don't just grab him, talk to him so he knows who you are. He can't say he's surprised his brother's kids are on their own, and he's pretty sure Tiger left to commit arson or some shit anyway so he takes them back home. He can still lecture his brother like a baby when he comes back. Tiger hates it, but Bear also hates to babysit children without it being planned so Tiger will sit on the couch and get lectured anyway. Everyone is getting mad tonight.
Horrorswapfell Papyrus - If the kids are there, it means there's a completely freaking out Bear somewhere having a panic attack. Tiger goes looking for his brother and finds him hyperventilating in the middle of the forest because he lost his way trying to find his children. That's ok though. Tiger just leads him back home with the kids and is nice enough to not comment on the accident, as his brother is already quite shaken and needs some time to recover. He at least praises the children for coming directly to him when they lost their dad so they do it again if it happened again.

phew! finally a weekend where i can set aside enough time to type up The Promised Endwalker Stream-of-Consciousness Post. i finished the base story... a month ago? but work has been busy, and i think tumblr benefits from me being quiet sometimes. anyway, what a ride. when you've been building up to the end of your arc for a decade, you want to hit it like an earthquake, and that's exactly what they did.
i think people love endwalker because it fires on all cylinders. it returns - in both story and vision - to the eorzea we love, and the dev team gets to show off everything they've learned. the dungeons and boss fights are dynamic and imaginative and colorful and bring the game's epic sense of scope to bear. the story callbacks are juicy. the music is orchestral again. we're back home, and we're saving the galaxy. what's better than this?
i love that we go to garlemald. i don't - i mean, you know, i don't like garlemald. i shouldn't have to qualify that. but it's hugely narratively satisfying to see the face of the enemy we've been fighting since the first few hours of ARR. you don't think about them when you're beating them up in castrum centri or ala mhigo. they're star wars bad guys. then you meet them on their own turf. you observe firsthand how they starve and cannibalize their own people to feed their obsession with state power and military strength. the wintry environment makes it seem all the more barren and desperate. my favorite part by far. i wish we'd spent more time there.
actually, on that note:
there is an argument that endwalker should've been two expacs. i've heard similar about stormblood - ala mhigo should've been the whole thing, and doma should've been either patch content or an expac of its own. the prevailing theory is that, after ARR, the devs are afraid of letting arcs run long. i can't speak to that, but i wouldn't have minded, that's for sure!
i won't pretend not to be biased. i've noted in many xiv posts that it hurries through its political plots to get to the magic stuff. i felt more conscious of it in heavensward and especially in stormblood. i made peace with it in endwalker. with dessert this good, who am i to complain? i can do small character drama on my own time. for now, the game wants royce to be a big damn shonen hero, and that can be fun, too.
speaking of characters, urianger and estinien have grown on me. this is the arc where, for me at least, the scions have congealed. they're all good, but with any large cast and custom player character, you tend to form the meatiest bonds with a few specific ones. i think royce appreciates urianger's cooler, more mature head. they're both so formal. he realizes she's someone he can confide in. i think she sees estinien as a gifted, but hotheaded whelp, which i find very funny. patience, child. stop sulking. do your breathing drills.
i love thancred's MGS sequence and in from the cold too. they're stressful, but i love that the team tried, you know what i mean? the fact that you can fight enemies in a pinch makes those duties way more bearable than some other games that experiment with stealth.
in from the cold as a whole, honestly. If You Know, You Know
all right, i can't avoid referencing spoilers anymore, sorry. there's a sense of classical tragedy to the whole elpis sequence. it's like watching macbeth or hamlet. you know how it's going to end, and you know you're powerless to stop it, but if they'd just made that different choice! but we had to leave eden. the warrior of light had to end up where they are to finish what elpis started. i don't do fate/destiny plots, but this? i'll take it.
i also knew what would happen going into ultima thule and still came away from it moved. it's strong writing. that's all there is to it. sure, the visuals are haunting, but the dialogue has to sell a gauntlet of difficult character moments, and it pulls it off. on the design side, there's some interesting intentional friction that forces you to linger in the zone and sit with its sense of despair. that part where you have to search the empty park for signs of life? oof
with the majority of the MSQ under my belt, i started sniffing around for what else there is to do ingame. i tried ninja. did terribly. i tried sage. did terribly too, but at least that gave me access to the healer role quests, which, ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). the nier raids are gorgeous. i even did the controversial werlyt quests, and terncliff is so cute. i kind of wish we could have another story there!
what's next? i dunno! right now i'm burning through the hildibrand quests before i continue on with endwalker's patch story. the field operation stuff seems interesting to do after the MSQ, in a "hey, you saved the world, but we have more missions for you" way. i've also contracted Triple Triad Collector Disease, so that'll keep me busy for a long time.
all right. one last thing. Real Gamer Moments: i was in a mount-farming party recently, and i said that i sort of collected mounts, but only used the ishgardian chocobo. it's a roleplay thing - it's the chocobo royce took when she ran away from ishgard. one of the party members said "haurchefant would be proud of you." AUGH

Tag Game: Writeblr Interview
Thanks @tildeathiwillwrite for the tag here!
I hesitate to tag as many people as this is one of those things where there’s no point in doing it twice but tagging:
@xenon-writes-sometimes, @rumeysawrites, @rivenantiqnerd, @leahnardo-da-veggie, @kaylinalexanderbooks, and an open tag!
This is going to be a long post so I’m adding a break here
Short stories, novels, or poems?
I cannot stand most poetry. Maybe it’s because I’m still in school and have to analyse it but I can’t deal with how abstract it can be. I want to write more short stories but my one and only WIP is probably gonna be closer to a novel, if and when I finish it.
What genre do you prefer reading?
Fantasy, especially high fantasy. Murder mysteries and detective stories in general are a close second. Most other genres are reserved for spin offs or fan fiction.
Are you a planner or a write as I go kind of person?
I make a plan that I then actively ignore my OCs force me to not use
What music do you listen to while writing?
Most of the time I listen to the one Reddit podcast I’ve listened to every episode of because I can zone out and I don’t miss anything important. This one is a bit of a bad habit because it distracts me, but EPIC the musical is my current hyperfixation and I listen to that constantly as well.
Favorite books/movies?
Because I have the reading comprehension of an 11 year old we have Murder Most Unladylike (I would die for this series), its spin off the Ministry of Unladylike Activity, The Hunger Games but only really the first book, How to train your dragon but only really the Netflix show and the first movie (the books are great but I haven’t read them in 7 or 8 years and because they’re so different from the movies I’m not sure if I’d like them anymore)
Any current WIPs?
Gold, Greed and Gods which is a vaguely Victorian fantasy about the main cast trying to find a cult before it engulfs the world in literal chaos. And also magical shenanigans and timeline fuckery
Create a character description of yourself:
Honestly I’d rather not. Sorry!
Do you like incorporating actual people you know into your writing?
No it kinda weirds me out. The closest I’ll get is asking my one irl mutual about their experiences with stuff that I (as a someone who is cishet and perisex) do not understand
Are you kill happy with your characters?
I’m not the biggest fan of angst so no. If anyone was gonna die you aren’t allowed to get attached to them so I don’t get attached them hence why the only dead characters in my WIP die before or very soon after it begins. That isn’t to say my characters aren’t affected, but I can only imagine any potential readers will be neither here or there about those characters.
Coffee or Tea while writing?
I don’t really like hot drinks but I hate the smell of coffee so tea?
Slow or fast writer?
A secret third thing which is I wrote 5000 words in 3 hours yesterday so for atleast the next week I won’t be able to string a sentence together
If you were in a fantasy world, what would you be?
A healer would be fun? I wanna be a doctor so I guess that’s close enough. I cannot imagine I’d survive very long without my glasses/ contacts in any case.
Most fav book cliche:
Not really a book cliche but horny bard memes will never not be funny. I also love juxtaposition between characters, if done tastefully, eg. Ray of sunshine is best friends/ dating the grumpiest character alive. I also just love ray of sunshine characters in general. Also, calm/ happy go lucky/ mentor figure characters who have really high body counts and it’s just kind of an open secret are really fun.
Least favorite cliche:
A lot of romance tropes are tied for last place: miscommunication, any reference or idea that firsts=better (virginity, first loves, one true love etc.), not like other girls
Also love triangles. The only good love triangles are the ones that end in polycules. No exceptions (/hj)
I probably just have a problem with like most romance stories
Favorite scene to write?
I love when characters reference unique worldbuilding things that I actually had to think about. Similarly, if I feel I’m doing them well, exposition dumps can be fun.
Reason for writing?
Because blirbos in my head yearn for freedom
On a more serious note, I’ve gotta do something healthy with all this escapism and maladaptive daydreaming.
Questions:
Short stories, novels, or poems?
What genre do you prefer reading?
Are you a planner or a write as I go kind of person?
What music do you listen to while writing?
Favorite books/movies?
Any current WIPs?
Create a character description of yourself:
Do you like incorporating actual people you know into your writing?
Are you kill happy with your characters?
Coffee or Tea while writing?
Slow or fast writer?
If you were in a fantasy world, what would you be?
Most fav book cliche:
Least favorite cliche:
Favorite scene to write?
Reason for writing?
Thanks again for the tag!

📚January 2024 Book Review📚
Tumblr media
I'm trying to come back to all the books I've read this year but going individually through the 80+ book is daunting so let's start with month by month!
January hasn't been very productive : I had just moved to a new city and didn't know where the public library was. I also was just setting up my e-reader so I was reading Farenheit 451 on pdf on my phone, it wasn't comfortable. Nonetheless my new year resolution of reading more consistently was holding so I was thrilled!
Tumblr media
Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb #1) by Tamsyn Muir
Gideon Nav is bored of the Ninth House, an almost dead planet in which she lives with some skeletons, some people so old as to almost be skeleton themselves and Harrowark Nonagesimus, Reverent Daughter and future leader of the Ninth. She was ready to escape when came the order: Gideon has to accompany Harrow as her Cavalier to the First House and help her to take up the challenges to become a Lictor, God's right hand. There's one problem, Harrow hates Gideon's guts and the feeling is mutual.
The Locked Tomb saga was everywhere on Tumblr so I caved and started it. Boy am I glad I did! Gideon the Ninth was an instant favorite that kept on confirming its status.
The plot swept me away, I was so engrossed in the tasks and tests I saw nothing coming! The end had everything I love in novels (epic battles, badass speeches, maybe a bit of romance and more than a bit of angst) and it took all my strength not to open Harrow the Ninth straight after finishing Gideon.
The wolrdbuilding is confusing at first but the confusion is a feature not a bug and quickly I was shrugging with Gideon every time a necromancer said something that made sense for them only. But what we get to see is original and full of details. I loved that in this universe bone magic is the norm instead of being Bad Guy MagicTM as is often is in fantasy.
Gideon is such a good character, funny, quick witted, horny as hell. Harrow too is endearing in her very very different way, mainly to me because we see her through Gideon's eye as the cavalier warms up to her necromancer (enemies to lover done right!) Her duo with Harrow is my second favorite only because nothing will ever top CamPal in my heart.
No need to say I fell hard for that saga and had since read the two following books, I'll come back to them in due time.
Tumblr media
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
In this dystopic future of America, the firefighters don't extinguish fires anymore: they start them, especially when it comes to burning books. Guy Montag is one of them and never doubted the institution until ome day, during an intervention he meets a woman hiding books and "accidentally" steals one. From there starts a chain of events in which Montag will question what he really does, but it's dangerous game.
Having been to school in France mean I haven't read a lot of american classics and I wanted to remedy this in 2024. I'll be honest my choice fell on this one specifically because of one MDZS fanfiction which is peperred with quotes from Fahrenheit 451 among others, so Bradbury it is!
This is fascinating to see both how far and how close science fiction and dystopic novels can fall to reality:
Books are not banned at a global level but book banning in the US is a frightening reality, expecially book by authors of color or lgbtq+ authors or anything that is a bit too critical of the government. I think Fahrenheit 451 is actually on the US banned book list which could be hilarious if it wasn't so sad.
And turning an institution that should be dedicated to public service in a tool for the government to maintain status quo, completely reversing its original purpose if necessary sounds rather familiar...
Rooms with full screen walls are not here but it hits really close to Virtual Reality and ever bigger flatscreen that we have today, virtual meetings too, especially since Covid. Could it escalate to everyone staying home and communicating with frieds and family exclusively through screens? Maybe! I don't know!
And police robot dog are very much here, although they can't euthanize people (yet).
It is also unsettling to compare it with the decline of literacy and critical thinking skills in both adults and school level children. Also maybe of our memory capacity: the omnipresence of video as a news and information format and devices that can remind us of everything everywhere all the time means we rarely have to remember anything by heart today, no phone numbers, adresses, schedules, let alone entire books! If tomorrow it was all we could do to preserve knowledge would we be able to learn it by heart? I had to learn one every weeks in primary school, do kids still do this today?
Doesn't sounds like it from this review but I really enjoyed this book! Montag is deeply interesting and I was really hoping he escapes both the system and the manhunt. It's one of those book that never ages.

La cicatrice by Bruce Lowery
Jeff, 13, and his family just moved in a new place. Jeff would like nothing more but to make friends and blend in but he has a scar "a small cleft lip" which makes him a laughing-stock. By trying to blend in and swallowing up the pain Jeff slowly becomes sadder and more withdrawn, suffering and making those he loves suffer in turn.
Fun fact : Bruce Lowery is American but he writes in French! Yes I needed to put a fun fact here because that summary is bleak and so is the book.
I remember reading La cicatrice (the Scar in french) when I was around 7 or 8 and really liking it (there is one scene in a church which stayed with me even as a teen and I pretty much copied it in a story I wrote at 15). In the years since I had forgotten how sad it was. It wasn't a really fun rereading but it still shook me so that's how good the book is.
Jeff is so 13 year old it physically hurt : the awkwardness, the need to blend in, the pain of not getting the jokes or not being picked up for games, the secrecy with his parents, the closeness with his little brother Bobby. You want to appear bigger than you are and not play with your 7 year old brother, even though you love him so much, because that's for babies. But at the same time you want your mother to hug you and tell you that everything will be alright so hard!
And he does. Everything. Wrong. Or so it seems to 25-year-old-me gritting my teeth through the second hand embarrassment and saying "no Jeff please don't do that" every 5 pages. Everything he does is stupid-kid-who-wants-to-have-friends-so-bad stuff but it's also some stuff I remember doing when I too was the lonely kid trying to make friends. It just turned out very very bad for him.
I still recommend it (I'm not sure if an English translation is available somewhere) with TW for school bullying and child death. It left its mark on me when I was young and still today it hits close to home. Just be warned that's it's a sad story.

Us by Sara Soler
Us is a comic book memoir which tells the love story of Diana and Sara as well as the story of Diana's transition and their exploration of both their sexual orientation.
A teeny tiny bit of levity and a change in color palette! I love the use of blue and pink almost exclusively in this book.
Well, not all of this memoir is levity but this is a really heartwarming story and I really loved it.
It is both funny, tender, hard also sometimes because there are transphobic and biphobic jerks everywhere. Nonetheless as a trans person it is so nice to have someone sharing her story and telling people that it exists, it's possible and if you want it, it can be yours too.
It's also interesting to see how the dynamic shift in the couple with all the changes a trans coming out brings. There's enough story of couple breaking up after a coming out as it is, it's important to see that some people will change for you too.
I admit I haven't read many trans memoir so I have very few reference to compare it with but go and read it, all trans voices matter and it's always nice to have a hopeful queer story at the ready!

they are surprisingly very active during the night, always finding ways to mess around while everybody is asleep
very good friends with the iris kids cause they can make rainbows
has something against cabin 3 because yknow the sun dries up water and stuff so yeah (cabin 3 kind of started it but cabin 7 was petty so instead of making ammends they kinda just...yeah.)
they like shooting/archery games like FPS or Call of Duty
GAYYYYYYYYY GAY GAY GAY SO FUCKING GAY THEY TAKE AFTER THEIR DAMN FATHER grrrrr☀☀
some of the trans apollo campers used bandages as a binder because they didn't really get to go out of the border unless it was a quest until the aphrodite cabin made it their mission to make skirts/dresses/binders for the trans apollo kids
the aroace/ace apollo campers absolutely love their aunt artemis. to be honest, the whole apollo cabin loves artemis because she tells awesome and funny stories
the apollo cabin is fucked up in the head
mostly because half of them jit work for 28 hours at the infirmary, barely getting sleep (RIP WILL😭😭)
and all the demeter kids try to help making natural medicines so that the medics don't have to tire themselves out by using their energy
which makes the demeter and apollo kids good friends
the demeter cabin also offers to help in fhe infirmary making medicines to help the campers
BLACK CAT PARTNER😭😭😭
not always happy and energetic like how others depict them but they're always(?) positive about everything
they either are southern motherfuckers or just have a really hot hidden accent cause DAMN apollo has great taste

they are favored by mr. d (he still calls them wrong names tho) and he lets them make trouble as long as it isn't affecting the camp and others
they have worse ADHD than most campers

What is one book, one tv show and/or movie, and one fic you think more people should try?
Unexpectedly hard question that I've been thinking about for days now, thanks Rifle! Done my best to answer with things I don't see on tumblr all the time.
tl;dr: Book (fiction): The Wizard of Earthsea. Book (nonfiction): Worn: a People's History of Clothing. Movie: The Secret of Roan Inish. TV: skipped in favor of explaining why you should go watch speedrunning to learn how computers work. Fic: The Edge by jplus (link below).
The in depth summaries/rec:
Book (fiction): the Wizard of Earthsea series by Ursula K le Guin. A bunch of short novels investigating what it means to be a person and grow into yourself as seen through the eyes of a number of different characters from different walks of life. Set against the backdrop of some of the most breathtaking worldbuilding I have ever read.
Book (nonfiction): Worn: a people's history of clothing by Sofi Thanhauser. An in depth look into the social history of clothing and cloth, and with a heavy focus on the global commerce's reliance on the fast fashion industry. If you want to know why the clothing market is Like That and exactly how deeply western economies/foreign policies revolve around cheap and exploitive labor, this book is for you. Heads up: it is a very heavy read.
Movie: The Secret of Roan Inish (1994). A story about family and growing up and industrialization taking over nature/the old ways and the sea. And also about selkies. You know that post that goes around about "that one weird movie your parents happened to have (on vhs) that absolutely no one else has heard of and also that changed your life?" Yeah. This one's my very favorite childhood movie.
TV show (but not really): I...really just don't watch any shows anymore, so I'll pivot and answer something that was not asked instead! Which is:
If you want to learn how computers work on a practical level (hardware, software, programming) but it's always been so abstract or confusing or you just can't visualize what is going on and it refuses to stick in your head (...this is me), I cannot recommend watching in-depth technical explanations of video game speedrunning enough. They tend to be an excellent demonstration of the intricacies and delicate balance of programming and exactly what it means to break/screw with that balance, in a way that is a very visual and memorable and often funny. Seriously. 10 university classes on programming don't hold a candle to what I got out of a few well-commentated GDQ speedruns. DM me for specific video recs.
Fanfic: The Edge (series), by jplus. An epic that explores the Star Wars plot from Rogue One onward through the end of the Sequels, the stories of which are all twisted (in excellent directions) to fit into this AU. Mostly follows the separate but interwoven stories of Bodhi (who survived to fight in the Rebellion) and Jyn/Cassian (who are stranded on a planet with only the barest ability to communicate back and yet manage to contribute to the rebellion anyway). Deals with survivor's guilt, ptsd, trauma, healing, growing, and moving on. AMAZING worldbuilding. Told in a non-linear fashion that helps break up what would otherwise be unbearable building plot tension.
This is ultimately a rebelcaptain kid-fic (way down the line) and one of the only one's I've read where I can see "yeah in this specific world they might have kids". Also, since it's my unofficial RO fic litmus test: some of the best characterization of Davits Draven I've ever seen.

I'm really curious about where exactly Doctor Who & spinoffs fit in to the 'scrambled universe' framework
So it's 2012. After a series of mental health events, Dan Harmon is on the rocks with his sitcom The Big Bang Theory, and is looking for a new project to do. He decides to call up his old friend Justin Roiland, who he met almost a decade earlier running Channel 101, and asks if he has any ideas for a cartoon. Roiland decides to file the serial numbers off of his old shock comedy short Miss Wonka, and the result is Adult Swim's Ms. Frizzle. Dan Harmon brings the systematic approach to story structure he honed working on The Big Bang Theory to elevate the project to something with some actual redeeming value someone could care about. The show premieres the next year, in 2013. It is acclaimed and beloved, and for a brief and golden moment in history it isn't even considered cringe.
It's 2018. Year after year, season after season, Harmon's people have edged out Roiland's people in the Ms. Frizzle writing room. Roiland has grown bored and disruptive; the show's staff only really see him anymore when he comes in to record the voices, or when he decides to play some inscrutable Epic Funny LOL Prank on them and waste their time. Meanwhile, Disney's main streaming platform, Hulu, is looking for exclusives that might draw people to subscribe, in a streaming environment that's quickly and unsustainably growing bloated. They have an easy time convincing Roiland to divert his attention to a second project. Roiland announces Dr. Who in an interview; it's the first Dan Harmon has ever heard of it. Mike McMahan (also getting picked up around this time by CBS All Access to do There And Back Again: Gollum) is the cocreator this time. Roiland has learned various bad habits while stagnating on Ms. Frizzle, so he won't put much effort into Dr. Who either, but he will at least get it going.
It's 2020. Granted a sort of captive audience by the recently-started coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Who premieres on Hulu. At a glance, it's a low-effort off-brand version of Ms. Frizzle; Roiland isn't even bothering to do a girl voice this time. If given a deeper look, there is something worthwhile there. It's a riff on an old subgenre of soft sci-fi TV, the idea of an immortal celestial time guardian figure - you see it in the BBC's long-running Quantum Leap, in Constance M. Burge's A Wrinkle In Time, and there are even elements of it in Ms. Frizzle, though they're much more concentrated in Dr. Who. The show is very episodic, though there are more serialized subplots and hints of a deeper-running plot; like Ms. Frizzle, the show is full of undisguised references to other media.
It's 2023. A legal case in which Roiland is accused of domestic abuse becomes widely publicized, followed by the dissemination of various inappropriate text messages he had apparently sent to fans. It becomes common knowledge that Roiland is a nightmare to work with, and every single project he's involved with drops him nearly simultaneously as a brand liability, even the video game development studio he founded to make Gone Home.
Every unaired project on which Roiland was set to do a voice comes up with a different strategy to replace him. Science Time: Rita & Morticia hires a new up-and-coming voice actor to play assorted versions of King Tommy, without comment. Season 7 of Ms. Frizzle replaces Roiland with Jinkx Monsoon; it's a very noticeable change, but she's still basically playing the same character, she's just doing a better job.
Dr. Who is the lesser-known knockoff living in Ms. Frizzle's shadow, so it has less to lose; it decides to make a meta joke out of the whole thing, and whips up a new sketch to start off season 4, in which the Doctor trips, falls down the stairs, and dies in front of his companion Rose Tyler. We are thereby introduced to the just-invented openly-bullshit process of "regeneration", in which the Doctor can come to the brink of death but dramatically cheat it, with the only consequence being that he'll now look and/or sound like a different guy. So, as of the opening scene of season 4, the Doctor is now voiced by Dan Stevens.
And that's how the Doctor on Dr. Who became British.

tuesday again 11/28/2023
tuesday again no problem will be taking a break for the 12/12 edition (not next week but the one after)
listening
previously featured Os Mutantes, a countercultural brazilian rock group, is back bc i heard A Minha Menha on an instagram reel by @/ vintagepulps on a showcase of brazilian pulp magazine covers.
youtube
the SECOND that driving riff hit i experienced a brief moment of fuckor bc this is exactly and precisely the kind of song i like. this translation tells me it translates to My Girl. it's got moon/sun imagery. it's exactly the kind of song to drive around to in the summer while having an absolutely crippling crush on the person in the passenger seat. spotify

you wouldn't download a woman...

watching
I'm No Angel (1933, dir. Ruggles) a 1936 black comedy written by Mae West and starring the babiest Cary Grant you've ever seen. i added it to my letterboxed bc i saw screenshots of this one specific dress. that’s so much sideboob. good for her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
we don't use the term "adventuress" anymore to describe a woman who does various physical or social stunts to land a husband and i think that's a shame. Tira (yes) is a burlesque dancer and (separately) a lion tamer at a down on its luck circus, becomes famous through putting her head in a lion's mouth, and leverages that fame to fall in and out and back into love.
your enjoyment of this movie will hinge on your tolerance for astrologers, circuses with animals in them, and depictions of black housemaids that have not aged super well, even if they're mostly there to stroke her ego. i'm sort of torn on what rating this would get today-- i'm assuming R bc there's a woman expressing desire but nothing actually happens beyond kissing and some sitting in laps. some peril for the lions i guess?
i do not think this particularly nailed its landing, and i'm not totally sure why they got back together, but mae west in straight up burlesque and the shimmiest dresses you've ever seen is so much fun to watch it doesn't really matter. this is sort of sidelining the her very funny, extremely quotable script. apparently any movie she wasn't allowed to write or heavily doctor her own lines just completely flopped, which i also think is very funny.
just straight up on the internet archive

triple header for Things That Came Out This Decade: Genshin Impact (September 2020), Deliver Us Mars (2023) and Gamedec (2021).
brief Genshin update: your main companion in the game, Paimon, the little fairy bitch, has been the recipient of some worrying foreshadowing lately. hey Paimon you wanna tell us anything???
Tumblr media
Deliver Us Mars, free on Epic this week. i want to like this game. i think there should be more weird little eurojank original scifi B-franchises like this and you should be able to feed your family by making them. i do not want to continue playing this particular little franchise.
it's the second game by KeokeN (The Netherlands) and published by Wired Productions (UK, although they are partnered with Koch, which means they’ll be bought up soon), a studio of under 20 counting support staff (some of who are certainly part time or on hourly contracts) and an intern. after doing that basic background research i ratcheted my expectations back a couple notches and deleted a somewhat catty paragraph about video game hair.
this is a sequel to Deliver Us The Moon, which was a successful Kickstarter and Steam greenlight (TM (C) R) and it seems they spent the four interval years mostly polishing up the predecessor Deliver Us The Moon, which i do not own and do not plan on playing.
Deliver Us Mars bills itself as an action-adventure, but during my time with it, it was more of a cinematic movie/walking sim with extremely light puzzle/platform mechanics. there are extensive childhood flashbacks following a dad around as he trains his daughter to be an astronaut. the timing and insertion of these never quite clicked for me-- they take forever and they were never as interesting as what they interrupted.
youtube
this game is not good at signposting or tutorializing. i had to restart a chapter twice bc the unique controls popped up for a brief fleeting moment on screen and weren’t in the keybinding settings. i could never quite get the mouse and keyboard camera sensitivity right, and platforming/vertical elements seem to only be partially implemented: you can only really successfully approach certain segments from extremely specific dead-on angles. there are like three big boxes in your path that you have to clamber over at one point and i do not think it should take a solid minute and a half for me to get over them. some reviewers praised the lack of signposting during the launch sequence (causing you to frantically look around at a million unlabeled buttons and levers to see if any of them were highlighted as a thing you can click) as a fun way to ramp up stress but i fucking hated it.
after two and a half hours, and only just making it to a ship OUTSIDE mars, i decided there are other games in the world. this hits some sort of minimal viable story benchmark for me, i can see why some people love it, but i don’t want to find out what happens bad enough to play through a slow game that handles terribly and isn’t much fun to exist in.
does get points for big fuckoff dishes.
Tumblr media
Gamedec is an isometric RPG, where you are a near-future private investigator who handles delicate personal matters inside wildly popular MMORPG VR games. unfortunately all the trailers suck shit.
youtube
this is catnip to me. i love a no-combat game where i have to walk around and talk to everyone and click on everything and write things down in a little notebook. i loooooooove being nosy. i've played through the first two and a half chapters (kinky second life, racketeering farmville, and real life uh oh) and i'm having a fucking marvelous time. the writing team clearly had a lot of fun, the VR game worlds feel very alive and vibrant-- there's a ton of possible weird little flavor interactions that go a very long way toward making me forget this is a limited-perspective isometric. this is like praising an RPG for doing what it says on the tin and being an RPG, but the most recent RPGs ive played have been fucking terrible. it's not shoehorning me into one-true or main-path choices. extremely forgiving of failure, which is good bc i straight up accidentally killed my first client. i know he was a kid but he kinda had it coming imo. sometimes kids just suck shit
Tumblr media
im so delighted by this shitty little apartment-- it's got to be fucking bizarre to exist in, bc of the ultra-loft ceilings you need to make it be isometric, but it somehow manages to feel like a studio apartment and a seedy back office all at the same time. a game that is in general very fun to Look at. will have more thoughts as i continue playing but this is really scratching some sort of itch for me. commits to the bit. funny but sincere. a pastiche in ways i personally do not find annoying. has not hit me with like konami code style references yet. due to the fact this is also in my epic games store library i believe this was also free at some point

fallow week for me. phil has been regrowing skin at a good clip and i can no longer feel each individual vertebra, AND we have another vet appt on friday to get more/different antibiotic goop and all of her vaccinations and microchipping done. mack made a hairball and is getting put back on an actual wire slicker brush grooming schedule. my beautiful girl seems to have a particularly dense coat among the domestic shorthairs of my acquaintance, although that may be bc she is a new england girlie and we constantly exist in air conditioning?? mixed feelings about scheduled brushies from her, even with short and light sessions. we’ll get there.
helping.
