Tumblr media
Us is Sara and Diana’s love story, as well as the story of Diana’s gender transition. Full of humor, heartache, and the everyday triumphs and struggles of identity, this graphic memoir speaks to changing conceptions of the world as well as the self, at the same time revealing that some things don’t really have to change.
Mod opinion: I haven't read this book yet, but it sounds sweet and I'm hoping to check it out at some point.

📚January 2024 Book Review📚
Tumblr media
I'm trying to come back to all the books I've read this year but going individually through the 80+ book is daunting so let's start with month by month!
January hasn't been very productive : I had just moved to a new city and didn't know where the public library was. I also was just setting up my e-reader so I was reading Farenheit 451 on pdf on my phone, it wasn't comfortable. Nonetheless my new year resolution of reading more consistently was holding so I was thrilled!

Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb #1) by Tamsyn Muir
Gideon Nav is bored of the Ninth House, an almost dead planet in which she lives with some skeletons, some people so old as to almost be skeleton themselves and Harrowark Nonagesimus, Reverent Daughter and future leader of the Ninth. She was ready to escape when came the order: Gideon has to accompany Harrow as her Cavalier to the First House and help her to take up the challenges to become a Lictor, God's right hand. There's one problem, Harrow hates Gideon's guts and the feeling is mutual.
The Locked Tomb saga was everywhere on Tumblr so I caved and started it. Boy am I glad I did! Gideon the Ninth was an instant favorite that kept on confirming its status.
The plot swept me away, I was so engrossed in the tasks and tests I saw nothing coming! The end had everything I love in novels (epic battles, badass speeches, maybe a bit of romance and more than a bit of angst) and it took all my strength not to open Harrow the Ninth straight after finishing Gideon.
The wolrdbuilding is confusing at first but the confusion is a feature not a bug and quickly I was shrugging with Gideon every time a necromancer said something that made sense for them only. But what we get to see is original and full of details. I loved that in this universe bone magic is the norm instead of being Bad Guy MagicTM as is often is in fantasy.
Gideon is such a good character, funny, quick witted, horny as hell. Harrow too is endearing in her very very different way, mainly to me because we see her through Gideon's eye as the cavalier warms up to her necromancer (enemies to lover done right!) Her duo with Harrow is my second favorite only because nothing will ever top CamPal in my heart.
No need to say I fell hard for that saga and had since read the two following books, I'll come back to them in due time.
Tumblr media
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
In this dystopic future of America, the firefighters don't extinguish fires anymore: they start them, especially when it comes to burning books. Guy Montag is one of them and never doubted the institution until ome day, during an intervention he meets a woman hiding books and "accidentally" steals one. From there starts a chain of events in which Montag will question what he really does, but it's dangerous game.
Having been to school in France mean I haven't read a lot of american classics and I wanted to remedy this in 2024. I'll be honest my choice fell on this one specifically because of one MDZS fanfiction which is peperred with quotes from Fahrenheit 451 among others, so Bradbury it is!
This is fascinating to see both how far and how close science fiction and dystopic novels can fall to reality:
Books are not banned at a global level but book banning in the US is a frightening reality, expecially book by authors of color or lgbtq+ authors or anything that is a bit too critical of the government. I think Fahrenheit 451 is actually on the US banned book list which could be hilarious if it wasn't so sad.
And turning an institution that should be dedicated to public service in a tool for the government to maintain status quo, completely reversing its original purpose if necessary sounds rather familiar...
Rooms with full screen walls are not here but it hits really close to Virtual Reality and ever bigger flatscreen that we have today, virtual meetings too, especially since Covid. Could it escalate to everyone staying home and communicating with frieds and family exclusively through screens? Maybe! I don't know!
And police robot dog are very much here, although they can't euthanize people (yet).
It is also unsettling to compare it with the decline of literacy and critical thinking skills in both adults and school level children. Also maybe of our memory capacity: the omnipresence of video as a news and information format and devices that can remind us of everything everywhere all the time means we rarely have to remember anything by heart today, no phone numbers, adresses, schedules, let alone entire books! If tomorrow it was all we could do to preserve knowledge would we be able to learn it by heart? I had to learn one every weeks in primary school, do kids still do this today?
Doesn't sounds like it from this review but I really enjoyed this book! Montag is deeply interesting and I was really hoping he escapes both the system and the manhunt. It's one of those book that never ages.

La cicatrice by Bruce Lowery
Jeff, 13, and his family just moved in a new place. Jeff would like nothing more but to make friends and blend in but he has a scar "a small cleft lip" which makes him a laughing-stock. By trying to blend in and swallowing up the pain Jeff slowly becomes sadder and more withdrawn, suffering and making those he loves suffer in turn.
Fun fact : Bruce Lowery is American but he writes in French! Yes I needed to put a fun fact here because that summary is bleak and so is the book.
I remember reading La cicatrice (the Scar in french) when I was around 7 or 8 and really liking it (there is one scene in a church which stayed with me even as a teen and I pretty much copied it in a story I wrote at 15). In the years since I had forgotten how sad it was. It wasn't a really fun rereading but it still shook me so that's how good the book is.
Jeff is so 13 year old it physically hurt : the awkwardness, the need to blend in, the pain of not getting the jokes or not being picked up for games, the secrecy with his parents, the closeness with his little brother Bobby. You want to appear bigger than you are and not play with your 7 year old brother, even though you love him so much, because that's for babies. But at the same time you want your mother to hug you and tell you that everything will be alright so hard!
And he does. Everything. Wrong. Or so it seems to 25-year-old-me gritting my teeth through the second hand embarrassment and saying "no Jeff please don't do that" every 5 pages. Everything he does is stupid-kid-who-wants-to-have-friends-so-bad stuff but it's also some stuff I remember doing when I too was the lonely kid trying to make friends. It just turned out very very bad for him.
I still recommend it (I'm not sure if an English translation is available somewhere) with TW for school bullying and child death. It left its mark on me when I was young and still today it hits close to home. Just be warned that's it's a sad story.

Us by Sara Soler
Us is a comic book memoir which tells the love story of Diana and Sara as well as the story of Diana's transition and their exploration of both their sexual orientation.
A teeny tiny bit of levity and a change in color palette! I love the use of blue and pink almost exclusively in this book.
Well, not all of this memoir is levity but this is a really heartwarming story and I really loved it.
It is both funny, tender, hard also sometimes because there are transphobic and biphobic jerks everywhere. Nonetheless as a trans person it is so nice to have someone sharing her story and telling people that it exists, it's possible and if you want it, it can be yours too.
It's also interesting to see how the dynamic shift in the couple with all the changes a trans coming out brings. There's enough story of couple breaking up after a coming out as it is, it's important to see that some people will change for you too.
I admit I haven't read many trans memoir so I have very few reference to compare it with but go and read it, all trans voices matter and it's always nice to have a hopeful queer story at the ready!

Picked up my copy of Season of the Bruja from Powell’s this week! It’s written by Aaron Durán in Portland, Oregon who has self published other comic titles La Brujeria, Dark Anna and the Pirates of Kadath, as well as writing for Dark Horse, Image, and Activision. Aaron is also the author of The Forgotten Tyrs series, and many other projects. One of which is co-hosting the podcast Geek in the City, it’s a weekly show common topics are local events, comics, Star Wars, Star Trek, tabletop gaming, D&D, Legos, working in retail, etc. The show is available on most if not all the major streaming platforms.
Illustration was done by Sara Soler in Barcelona, Spain I’m not familiar with her other work but she does beautiful work, the art is wonderful and the story is engaging and well structured. I’m a little sad I read it all in one go to be honest.

Girlfriends - Sara Soler

hi hi hi!!
Name your favourite artists who inspire you! Your arts are so cute
Other ship aside Armin/Annie?
Do you plan to draw more Aruani?
oh hiiii !!! 😊
1.
This is very difficult aaaaaa :_) obviously all the aruani related artists that I follow inspire me a lot, maybe we have very different art styles but I love seeing their art and they encourage me to embrace and enjoy the fandom as I am still a bit self-conscious about that "nerdy" part of myself.
I am kinda shy to mention specific people but let's see...... @nobluesea, @annawayne, @lidatan, @brbarou, @phyroblue, @ghostieking, @pepperjackets, @catfein ... aaand I have to mention @kalruani who I think is my fav aruani artist but I don't think they're on tumblr...... 👉👈 I don't wanna make anybody feel bad if I forget them, so if I follow you, consider yourself part of the list PLEASE :_)
some other non tumblr related people:
Ana Galvañ • Sara Soler • Gabriel Picolo • Bryan Lee O'Malley • alessandro barbucci • Núria Tamarit • Miguel Gallardo (RIP) • Maria Herreros • Laura Brouwers • Gretel Lusky • KAZLAND • Cristina Daura • So Lazo • Dakota Cates • Ingrid Arbiol • Paw Salcés • Xulia Vicente • Beatriz Fletes • LUCIA CUÑAT ORTEL • Paco Roca • Fran Riolobos • Ian • Sha'an d'Anthes • Lucy Zhang • David Ramírez • Julia Kaye • Alex Norris • AND some friends that are also great artists: [RAMUNE] - Alba Flores - Natalia Lucas - Joaquín Guirao
I'm forgetting people for sure aaaaaaaaa I tried my best.........
The alternative / punk / fanzine / local scene inspires me a lot, shows like Adventure Time, videogames like NITW or Omori with great art, and MUSIC!
2.
at this moment tbh I am super aruani focused... but I've shipped a lot through my life haha when I was a child I was obsessed with TK + Kari (digimon) and I usually shipped my fav character from anything, which usually was the misfit / weird / nerd one (I still do btw) 😅 Some ships that I also like at this moment could be zutara, bubbline, tomgreg from succession (in a fun way tbh), OBVIOUSLY tayley from paramore but they are real people so..... HAHA idk if you ask me what do I think of some specific ship I'll tell you my take!
3.
YES!! 🥰
thank you for asking!

Not in this life. Part 1 (Gavi fanfic)
Two years ago:
Sara had convinced Nuria to go out with her and other friends from school. Despite being very close friends since they were little, the two were very different. Sara hated that Nuria no longer liked going out since Ferran had left.
"You are wasting your youth." Sara had told her. "I just need to focus on school for now." Nuria had said. "Fine, let's go." She had agreed to Sara's pleas that day.
The group of friends had agreed to meet in Las Ramblas at sunset and walk until they found something to do. This was a regular hangout place for teenagers, so they were bound to run into someone or find something fun to do eventually.
As Nuria, Sara, and some of their friends were walking to get some food, Nuria saw a small group of boys nearby. One of them in particular caught her attention. Their eyes met and Nuria smiled. The boy gave her a sheepish smile and looked around, almost as to check if anybody else had seen the interaction. Nuria and her friends kept walking. After a few minutes she realized that the group of boys was close again. One of them approached Nuria "Have you met my friend?" he said as he pushed the boy from before towards Nuria. Nuria chuckled. Sara and the rest of the group looked at Nuria who smiled at the young man and held out her hand. "Nice to meet you."
The young man who had a worried look on his face stepped forward and shook Nuria's hand. "Excuse this idiot. We didn't mean to upset you." Nuria smiled. "It's not a bother, my name is Nuria Soler."
"Pablo". The boy bit his lip and looked curiously at Nuria. “Pablo what?” Asked Sara.
“Pablo G- we’ll just Pablo.” Nuria smiled. “Well nice to meet you, just Pablo.”
Their respective groups of friends remained close. "Do you want to go for a walk?" asked Pablo. Nuria looked at Sara who, with her look, asked her if she was okay. Nuria shook her head indicating that everything was fine and Sara and the rest of her friends began to move away from her. Seconds after Nuria and Pablo left the group, she received a message from Sara. "Take care. Text me to meet up. Kisses but not many." Nuria looked at the screen and smiled.
"Your friends?" asked Pablo.
"Yes." Nuria said putting her phone in her pocket. "I know this is weird," Pablo said. "My friends say I need to go out more and they saw me staring at you." Nuria giggled. "You mean you don't always walk up to strangers at las ramblas and ask them to walk with you?" they both laughed.
The two walked for a long time but it didn't feel like that to them. The conversation was easy. They talked about a lot of things but about nothing at the same time. They eventually found themselves at the beach, which meant they had been walking for a while, now far away from las ramblas. The boy bought a beer for each of them, the kind they sold on the street, and they sat down on the sand. "I didn't think I would end my day in La Barceloneta." said Nuria. Pablo laughed. "But you're having a good time, right?" The boy looked at Nuria with hopeful eyes."Yes," she answered.Everything was quiet except the waves crashing and a group of people dancing in the distance.
Nuria felt that the young man was getting closer to her. The air was a bit chilly and she could feel the boy's warmth. "I never do this." he said. Nuria turned to him. "Do what?" the boy moved closer to her. His gaze moved from her eyes to her lips. "Just do it." she said daringly. The boy closed his eyes and leaned in to kiss Nuria. The kiss was soft and tender. He made Nuria feel things that she had never felt before, he scared her.
"Pablo I - I'm not looking for anything serious." said Nuria. Gavi felt his heart break. Despite having just met the young girl, he felt something for her and her kiss had solidified his feelings. "It's okay." he said. "I know we just met but I can tell you're different Nuria. Don't worry. I understand." Nuria felt her throat close and a tear fell from her eye. "It’s not you, there’s someone else". she told Gavi. "You have a boyfriend?" Gavi asked surprised.
"No. He was, but we're not together anymore. He had to move and I hear he's doing great and I can't move on." Nuria told Pablo. Pablo remained silent. "A pretty girl like you shouldn't cry for a bastard like that.”
That night the two decided that they would not exchange contact information. Nuria believed that if this was meant for something more than what it had been, they would meet again. Instead, Pablo had made his promise, hoping one way or another to meet her again. Nothing else happened that night apart from that kiss. Finally, the boy accompanied Nuria back to where she would meet her friends. Pablo took her hand and gave her a kiss on her cheek. "It was a pleasure. And remember stop crying over a bastard." She smiled. "Take care, just Pablo."

I'm still trying to get the hang of the whole "posting content" thing, but I think providing a reading wrap-up every month will allow me a little more to work with. January was a fairly standard reading month. I was able to get through ten books, though I added quite a few to my TBR. Kind of had a mini heart attack when I realized that, according to my Storygraph, I have about 1,731 titles on there. Well, at least I know I'll never run short of reading material.
Total Books Read: 10
Total Pages Read: 3,689
Books Read:
The Devil Aspect by Craig Russell - (Review) (3.5/5)
Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster by Jonathan Auxier - All I have to say is that the best kind of children's fiction tends to be the ones that expertly balance the harsh cruelties of life, especially during the Victorian era, with an unshakable sense of hope and a lot of heart. Sweep is one of those books that doesn't shy away from the reality and history of children in peril, but there is a warmness in its pages that comes from feeling and seeing the love and protection of dear ones long since passed. Definitely a bit of a tearjerker, but in a good way. (4/5)
The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu - (Review) (4/5)
Property of the Rebel Librarian by Allison Varnes - Looking at the world around us, this book couldn't be more relevant, as book bans are sweeping across schools and kids are left without a choice in what they want to read. Though it presents a somewhat simplistic scenario of censorship gone wild, it's definitely meant as an accessible way for young readers to be introduced to the process of book banning and what can be done to make your voice heard. (4/5)
Season of the Bruja Vol. 1 by Aaron Duran and Sara Soler - A really beautiful graphic novel that highlights the conflict of surviving indigenous traditions vs. religious colonialism. Stories that point out the hypocrisy and brutality of the Catholic church scratch such a good itch for me. The world is a little shaky though, not much is exactly explained and you almost need some prior knowledge of Mexican mythology going in, but it's worth checking out. (3/5)
A Winter's Promise by Christelle Dabos - (Review) (4/5)
Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison - (Review) (4/5)
The Ivory Key by Akshaya Raman - Though it takes a while to get going, The Ivory Key does have a great readability to it as the action finally kicks in about maybe halfway through. Up until then, the book spends a great deal laying the foundation of this world: tensions between cities, the role and history of magic in this society, the dynamics of the main characters. I will say, being introduced to at least seven different important characters in the span of 30 pages is a tad overwhelming at first, but it levels out the more you keep reading. While I did enjoy it, there was nothing particularly exemplary about the story that wowed me. The Indian-inspired setting and mythology makes it stand out, but everything else used the same tropes, beats, and twists that I've seen time and time over with little to add to them. I liked it enough to want to read the second book coming out later this year, but probably not enough to keep it on my personal shelf. (3/5)
Black Panther: The Young Prince by Ronald L. Smith - Read this one in a day and was fairly satisfied with it. It'll definitely appeal to middle grade readers looking for Marvel tie-in stories, as it has a quick pace and a good amount of action and mystery. For me, I don't think I enjoyed it enough to continue with the sequel, but it was nice to see a younger T'Challa and M'Baku out of their element away from Wakanda and how dynamic changed over the course of the book. (3/5)
Scavenge the Stars by Tara Sim - For a book inspired by The Count of Monte Cristo, the story itself was incredibly simple and told fairly straight-forwardly, but I think that works in its favor. I'm at the point where I'm starting to tire of long-winded society dramas so I appreciated it for having a bit of focus. Everyone's motivation is clear, with a natural twist or two popping up along the way, plus a great amount of casual queerness. Though the world-building wasn't exactly intricate, there is a good sense of aesthetic and personality in the setting of Moray from its high status venues to the seedy gambling dens. I'm interested to see where the story goes in the sequel! (3.5/5)
Average Rating: (3.6/5)
