[WIP] TS3 UI "Krystal"

I figured it would be cool to finally publicly share what I've been working on behind the scenes, as well as some mockups!

A few of you on Patreon or Discord may have already seen sneak peeks/given feedback. I kept things quiet because I wasn’t sure I’d even do it in the first place as a next modding project, and I didn’t want to let anyone down.

Luckily, @lazyduchess’s Monopatcher made the job ten times easier. The biggest hurdle was that I would've had to make a core mod to override UI code (I’m normally anti–core mod), but the patcher solved that and let me push ahead.

Creating the Mockups

Fun fact: I actually have a degree in UI/UX design! (for websites) While principles like “How wide should this padding be?” or “Which colors send the right signal to the user?”—game UI is a whole different beast.😬

Main Menu

I started with the main menu:

Cut the SimPoints clutter and the “Buy TS4!” banner—after a decade, we get it exists 😉.

Grouped items into clean blocks

Added a text-free “Create New Family” icon

Swapped lot thumbnails for family shots (still baffled by EA’s original choice).

Dropped an options gear in the bottom-left; might label it if it’s too subtle.

Different backgrounds: one solid blue, one closer to the classic gradient.

Not much has changed here! It's just less... busy I suppose, lol!

Moved the Game Tips to the bottom, so the main focus stays on that loading bar 😉

I also have a third option but I'm strongly leaning towards just having the loading bar as it's the most clear!

Live Mode

The hardest of them all lol. Kudos to EA for figuring that one all out! I really struggled with this one in regards to shape and what to even move around/remove!

I figured, it should be nice to pull really into that glassmorphism I've been using over the Mockups! Now I do realise that it can hamper user experience in the sense of not being able to read anything. But these are pictures! So that should be all fine and dandy.

The active item in the queue will now be more "visible". The queued item however, you'll see look a bit more "unactive" compared to what the current version has.

I also completely overhauled the thumbnails for your sims, showing their moods a bit better, and giving the active sim a tiny plumbob! :D

And now the real deal: The control panel! You might notice it's not the whole thing, but I'm still working on that part.

I removed the camera controls from the panel. However, upon feedback, I did hear that it's better to have them as some people are limited in their hand movements on their keyboard and that those controls are really useful. So I will make sure to share 2 versions :)

I also realised I completely forgot the Build/buy mode buttons 😬 So, err, stay tuned for that? lol.

Notifications I really just tidied up :p

I am aware that the space where the text is and the thumbnail is huge, and normally I'd wrap the surrounding text, but apparently in TS3's UI stuff that's practically impossible. Hence that they got this "2 column" effect to them 😉

About releasing the UI:

I'm hoping to release them all in bits and pieces! So first up is the Main Menu (and possibly the Loading screen given it's simplicity).

After that, I hope in my second "update" to release a big portion of Live mode, but that's a bigger task on it's own of course 😉

Something I've noticed in fandom is that when a Black person comes out to talk about the racism they've experienced or are experiencing, most of the time they're told to block and move on and keep creating to spite the haters. I don't necessarily disagree with this sentiment, I'm all for curating your online space, but I rarely, if ever, see people really call out the people being racist? They get some push back like a callout post or two, but a majority of the time it blows over and they're usually still active and, often, more popular than before.

I'm sure no one ever says to block and keep going to be malicious, and maybe this is me being a bit jaded, but having been on the receiving end of fandom racism and its particular brand of awfulness, being told to "just keep creating" felt so...dismissive? I felt traumatized and hurt and sad and angry, I didn't feel like going back to drawing fanart.

It felt unfair that I had to live with this experience and process it and go back to posting while they still get to be out there being racist with little to no repercussions. It feels unfair seeing other Black creators talk about their similar experiences and having that response be "so sorry that happened, but please keep making art/fics/etc for us!" from nonblack people.

And, again, I don't necessarily think it's coming from a bad place. I just wish nonblack people were more mindful of how this effects us and would put more of that energy into not only making a safer space for Black people, but making it an unwelcome place for racists. Do I think that'll happen? No, because as long as someone can draw or write something white people like, they can get away with anything. But I can hope.

You are not alone in this experience, and I'm sorry that you had to have it at all.

I feel the same way, fr. I'm jaded to it, but not enough for it to not cause resentment. It burns me deep inside that there are people who are or have been openly antiblack, to me and in general (fandom and non), and they get to continue on like shits okay and they're "so cool".

You'll see posts from "supportive allies" saying "oh don't stop creating, you're welcome here! I like Black people!" But they're nowhere in sight when it's time to actually defend you from the racism that makes you want to leave 😐. No one's willing to give up their comfort, to give up the shield of the status quo to actually be an ally. "Tumblr's for entertainment" yeah and apparently a lot of people are entertained by racism 😅

Like... 👀👀👀 So you were all talk lol. You want me to stay and feel valued because I create and you're entertained, not because you actually value me as a human. It's a avocado! Thaaaaaanks. I always say it's the thought that counts but the action that delivers. Nobody knows that you "aren't racist" in your head or through empty words. We make that judgment based off your actions.

And a lot of people's actions speak of complicity, unfortunately. It's easier to tell you as the victim to block and move on than it is to take that next step and say "damn, I guess I can't be such and such's friend anymore". It's easier to deny outright that something is racist (because if that thing is racist, and they like it, then- EGADS-) then to realize that "hey, I need to be more open to engaging with this in a more inclusive way". Fandoms not a vacuum, unfortunately.

It's an ongoing battle. What's the meme- "I'm doing my part!"

Apologies for rambling, but I feel the need to get this off my chest.

I decided long ago I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for HL3, to the point where I had no idea Half-Life: Alyx had even been a thing until my boyfriend notified me of its release the day that it dropped. There are several reasons for this.

Firstly, because putting all of your hopes and dreams in the hands of a corporation is seldom a good idea, even if it is Valve we're talking about. What if they make something mediocre? Then we'll have waited and wished and hoped for nothing over the past seventeen years.

Secondly, because good art takes time. If they never drop HL3, cool, because I'll still have had mods and art and fanfic to fill that hole. If they do, also great, but overall my emotional well-being shouldn't hinge on it. I would be fine if HL3 never arrived. At this point it would be a pleasant surprise, but it's not like I'm going to die without it. I actually kind of think if my attitude was more the latter, it'd only sour the experience if anything was less than perfect with the game.

Thirdly, because it's annoying to see people work themselves into a lather every time Valve so much as moves their desks around.

There's getting hyped, there's making memes, and then there's visiting a psychic while mentally LARPing as Gordon Freeman just to get a crumb of information on a game they may or may not be developing and writing a freaking VICE article about it:

In fact, I'd wager this kind of self-sustaining hype bubble may be part of the reason why the team's creative enthusiasm for HL3 has waned over the years. Not to say they don't bear any culpability in the delays and such, but it is understandable that the sheer conspiracy surrounding the title would become off-putting.

Ending stories is difficult even in the best of circumstances, and they'd be developing the game in a pressure cooker. There are so many loose ends they'd have to tie up, so many mysteries to solve, all while providing an entertaining experience and implementing innovative gameplay and bringing the entire series to a satisfying conclusion.

Given Valve's general standards of quality, it's almost like they fear anything short of an orgasm in digital form will crash and burn: a notion the internet does absolutely nothing to refute when people tweak out over the most minute of signs.

Of course they drifted toward lower-stakes projects. You can't create anything with room to grow and breathe when your fandom is constantly setting the stakes that high.

Which brings me to my next point: why are we waiting on Valve to tell us how this ends, anyway? Any version of HL3 they could make will never live up to the version of HL3 you have in your head, by simple virtue of their inability to mind-read.

Especially salient, since I genuinely believe the tone of HL3 will retroactively dictate the tone of the rest of the series. Was it always a treatise on human resilience? Cosmic horror? Who knows? It's still up in the air. They still have space to back out of any corners they've written themselves into. Once they commit to a plot, that's it. They can't walk it back.

Valve have waited too long to put a period on that sentence; the hype that has built up in its absence is astronomical. And while I generally respect their policy of "suck is forever" and agree that it'd be better to wait for high-quality games than to see them pump out slop at a faster rate, they might also be shooting themselves in the foot by thinking every new title needs to be a genre-bending pioneer. Perfect is the enemy of good and all that.

And, frankly, between Epistle 3 and the fact that HLA was essentially a means of retconning the end of Episode 2, I'm starting to doubt that Valve themselves even know how the story ends. This is like, the fifth game now where G-Man swoops in to pluck the characters off the tabletop and set them down elsewhere, without a single hint as to where any of this leads. The constant kicking of the can down the road is starting to wear a little thin.

That being said, I wouldn't want them to conclude the series unless they had a crystal-clear vision of what they wanted to do, and only if they had a deep intrinsic desire to work on the project. Which, honestly, at this point may be impossible.

I mean... They were surprised that players grew emotionally attached to Barney Calhoun, a comedic relief side character who they probably didn't put much thought into, over more major characters they spent time fleshing out (cough, Alyx). If HL3 had released back in 2017 and followed Marc Laidlaw's written treatment, Barney wouldn't have appeared, which probably would have gone over like a lead balloon. The creators' priorities inherently are not going to 100% align with fan interests.

I literally could not think of anything worse than an HL3 made just to shut us up, you know what I mean? Not that they ever would, of course, but seeing various other IPs deteriorate due to a desire to keep the tapes rolling has made me appreciate the value of a good self-contained story all the more.

All this to say, if you want HL3, don't rage against Valve for failing to deliver on promises they never purported to make in the first place. Channel that energy toward more productive ends. Write fic. Read fic. Support promising mods like Interlude. You have more control here than you think.

🦄 Mane 6 Redesign! 🦄

Aaaaaa my first redesign post!! I had so much making this and been looking forward to finally share it. (but my hand hurts right now from drawing lolol)

To those new to me: I do this thing where I redesign characters as a challenge (+ have fun being creative with design tweaks (✿◠‿◠)) , I don't dislike any of the OG designs, I just like to give myself something fun to do :'D

OK so starting off with species differences:

I make it a point to make each species unique from one another with different tail + ear shape for each kind of pony

in order to explain away how do ponies in this iteration get conveniently matching body markings, I imagine that fillies are born without markings but slowly get them after receiving their cutie mark. the markings slowly leaves changes on the coat/mane as they grow into adulthood :D

also gave all species hoof markings, the shape of the hoof corresponds with the pony's cutie mark

for unicorns– they also have horn markings that correspond with their cutie mark. OH and, horn magic color corresponds with the color of the pony's eyes

for pegasi– the tips of their wings would match with the color of their manes

not mentioned in the images attached but the eye light shape also corresponds with the ponies' cutie mark >_< (fillies just have regular circles until after they get their cutie marks-)

misc feature: ponies may or may not have leg tuffs, like with some ponies you'll see below, some may have fuller leg tuffs that goes all the way around.

Alright now that you know more about the species design notes, I'll get into each ponies' design choices

Pinkie Pie

Starting off with Pinkie, I made her coat fluffy, matching her mane, her mane was shorten a bit and also gave her a white streak in her bangs + added a hair accessory + confetti in her hair from throwing parties (my headcanon is that she doesn't bother to pick them out so she just leaves em there)

she has pebble shaped markings on her face and coat running down her back. In her pink form, those markings are commonly mistaken as large freckles

her desaturated form takes inspo from how she looks as a filly, also her mane shape may or may not have been inspired by the shape of pinata paper strips.

Among all the ponies, Pinkie is also the shortest. I try my best to give each pony a different height, hope that was noticeable haha

Applejack

Next up, Applejack, now for her design (+ most of the mane 6's designs) there isn't too much change. For her, I gave her coat more texture akin to actual patterns from real horses. Similar to pinkie, Applejack's back has pebble-shaped spots (feel free to believe that I intentionally added it there to link AJ + Pinkie as distant relatives haha)

In comparison to pinkie though, I used a lot of sharp lines while drawing AJ, also made her look more muscular / "box" shaped compared to the other ponies. (which fits too as I imagine her farm work made her pretty fit)

As mentioned, AJ's hoof tuffs go all around

Twilight Sparkle

For twilight, I tweaked her colors to be more Purple and included a bit of orange to create a small contrast as I noticed her OG palette was a lot of Purple. (cool colors) + I wanted her palette to resemble more of a twilight color (?)

I also noted that some other people felt that Twilight doesn't match the archetype she was meant to represent so I gave her glasses in an attempt to make her appear more "studious"

Her unicorn form is also shorter compared to her alicorn form. (gave her slightly shorter horn + legs)

Rarity

Okay Rarity's has to be my favourite redesign HAHA. I also have a feeling a lot of you will point out she resembles the last unicorn a lot 🥲 to that, i'm deeply sorryy

Anyway, for Rarity I changed her palette a lot more compared to the others because I wanted her palette to match her name sake 'Rarity', so what better way to set her apart as being a pony with a different mane/tail color!! + heterochromia which means her horn magic is 2 different colors. (that's my headcanon of what might constitute as 'rare' in pony genetics. ALSO off topic but is it just me or has there never been a pony in the show that actually has heterochromia? 🤔 tbh I can't remember)

I also gave her some gem accessories that she wears as a necklace, oh and a matching earring as well

Fluttershy

ah yes, my other favourite design. For Fluttershy, I softened her colors and also added some green

also, among rainbow and twilight, Fluttershy's wings are purposely designed to be fluffier. I imagine as opposed to rainbow who actively trains her wings for athletic flying > sharpens them to become aerodynamic, when fluttershy flies, she takes her time, so they aren't as worn down as RD's.

I imagine Fluttershy uses floral-scented shampoo that she handmakes with flowers from her own garden which attracts the butterflies that rest in her mane

I also purposely designed fluttershy's ears to be down on default, playing into her 'shyness'

Rainbow Dash

last but not least, rainbow underwent a few changes. Firstly you'll notice I shortened her hair + added white streak bangs & side tendrils that cup her face. (now that I'm looking at it, her hair resembles the pony life RD 😭)

Additionally, RD's wings are sharper, more chipped due to active use.

also among the rest of the ponies, Rainbow is also on the shorter side but she's also more lean/fit. I took into consideration her being an athlete (and a flyer at that) would influence her body shape, I feel that in order for her to fly fast, her body shape suited her nicely.

I also gave RD some googles as accessories.

Anyway, congrats on making it to the end! here's a height lineup ref for the mane 6!!

gimmie sooty lore they look cool

Well, that guy is probably one of my least traumatized OCs and that's just because I prefer to keep most of his trauma as a 'what if' scenario that never actually happens in canon.

But I guess before I explain that, I shall explain how his world works.

Well, I like to think that the Earth as well know it (in this universe) has some sort of funnel shaped mist on top of it.

This is just a messy sketch, and probably even accurate too because the mist is so much that you probably won't see the complete shape of it, such everyone just thinks it's funnel shaped

So basically this... thing, generates souls. Nobody is too sure what exactly happens inside it that souls are created, because this mist can only be seen on certain days (If you're someone who doesn't have the gift too see it 24/7) when there's lots of traffic going on (Lots of souls being created or lots of soul 'returning to their origin')

When you die, your soul leaves your body and floats back up into the mist, most people have agreed that when that happens, your soul is broken to its most basic components and recycled, for a new soul to make use of. Sometimes this process isn't entirely clean, as some people have reported having memories of things they don't think they've done, which was something that fueled the idea of past lives.

Anyways, souls are usually given traits on what sort of body they are meant to inhabit (human, monster, animal) but sometimes mistakes happen and they enter the wrong body. When that happens, the current that they are in starts together traits of the sort of vessel that they were actually supposed to be inside (For Sooty's case, he was meant to be a wolf, but his soul entered a human vessel, so the body adapted to the soul and got wolfish traits)

Children who died as soon as they were born, is a result of no soul claiming the vessel during gestation period.

Some souls weren't created from the mist, sometimes two or more very powerful individuals can be able to create a unique soul as they produce offspring, but it's a risky practice, as th mist doesn't accept souls that didn't come from it and the souls would now just be referred to as 'lost souls' floating around until God knows what happens to them. They are other ways a soul can be created, but maybe that will be another topic ig.

Now, enough with that, time for Sooty's lore. Well, since he's technically a wolf, he obviously will have some animalistic behavior. His parents (he never knew them) dumped him in the woods when he was barely a year old, because they got scared by the fact that he was having wolf ears ( there was a time where people didn't accept these sort of things and saw them as failed humans) but luckily for him so ironically got adopted by a pack, because apparently him being in a human body wasn't near to enough to severe the connection between the species he was actually meant to be.

But he didn't really stay with them for long. He wasn't that old when he realized that this sort of thing wouldn't work out in the long run, so he left them, surviving by himself. A lone wolf, if you want to call it. This guy was just around 7 when he did that, btw. That also didn't last for long, because child protective services found him, and were trying to educate him and teach him more human ways. It surprisingly worked out, but Sooty didn't have a legal name so they were still fishing around for names that will good for him.

So after that, they didn't want him to be lonely, so they took him to an orphanage where he met Eli (that one is another story on its own lmao). Eli didn't really like him (or anyone really) but after a while these guys became inseparable. And it was Eli that suggested the name Sooty to him to use.

So ye that's all basically.

Alrighty. I hate saying this, but. I'm probably going to delete the ship discourse asks in my inbox. Too many in there now and my mind is too clear to want to answer them

I think we've all been harsh with each other recently. Shouldn't have had to sleep on that, shouldn't have taken me longer than a few minutes to realize that, but idk. I went to bed last night and woke up this morning and... remembered how old I am and that I have better things to care about lol. But seriously, this recent update has really gotten to people's heads, mine included unfortunately, so I think we all need to take a step back and reevaluate ourselves

To try to explain (not excuse) myself personally. I, my friends and acquaintances, and our little fan community have gotten so much harassment for so long that now that the story is sort of tipping in our favor, I felt... vindicated. TOO vindicated this time around lol. For years and years now we have all been viciously mocked, shunned, called misogynists, called abuse apologists, we've been told to kill ourselves, we've been told bad things should happen to our loved ones. I couldn't help but feel smug when episodes 7 and 8 dropped, and then episodes 9 and 10 pushed me into being legitimately petty and mean. Like, all of this harassment was already pointless, now it's even more pointless because BxA is canon. Sore winner, "they hated Jesus because he told the truth" type shit lol

But... That's dumb. All of this is dumb. They're just video game characters. I'm an adult with adult responsibilities lol. None of this is worth getting bent out of shape about, on any side. Nothing wrong with respectful conversation and debate, but it hasn't really been that this time around. It's been gloating. Teabagging. And that's not cool. So I'm sorry for that. I'm sorry if I've upset anyone with anything I've said. I'm happy about Eternalberry but I've gotten TOO happy haha. I've regained mental clarity and thus the realization that I've started becoming part of the problem. I'm genuinely sorry for that. I want to go back to regular dork levels. Being spiteful and petty sucks, even if it's "justified"

Since I feel bad for leaving those asks awaiting deletion, A) mea culpa mea maxima culpa to those who sent them, nothing against any of you I just want to put the discourse to rest, and B) they all more or less say the same things so I'll just go ahead and bullet point my responses:

Hero/villain ships are as old as human civilization and fandom nerds today have gotten really uptight about them, it's dumb and honestly really bizarre considering how prevalent it is in almost every piece of media, if someone doesn't like the trope that's perfectly fine it's not for everyone it does get pretty dark but a lot of people seem to put on gestapo uniforms when they're brought up now and it's a waste of time and energy. No one is holding a gun to your heads you guys, you don't need to do it to anyone yourselves

It's nice that I've apparently managed to convince some people to be more open-minded about BxA and hero/villain shipping as a whole, welcome to the club glad to have you, I'm sorry you've had to see some of us do our "obnoxious clown" routine recently, don't worry I'm washing my makeup off rn

I'm disappointed but unsurprised that BxA fans have been getting death threats in places, unfortunately that's how it's always been and it will continue to be that way even if all 5 pairs marry and have sex onscreen. No amount of canonizing in the narrative will change some people's minds. No amount of reasoning or olive branches will make them realize how ridiculous they are. Just have to accept it and ignore them

Cookie Run Kingdom is Baby's First Fandom for a lot of people, and a lot of them are actual, literal children, so all the black and white thinking and lack of understanding and respect makes sense, sadly. This is why I put my age in my blog description haha

Rule of thumb for me personally is to just block people who post hate in ship tags tbh. Spare us both the trouble. I've only responded to one post ever, and it was because the person was asking an honest question in a reasonable way so I thought it was fine to engage. I'd rather not engage people who want to attack and not actually talk. Blocking does us both a favor, I don't have to see meaningless hate on my dash and in tags I follow and they don't have to see content about ships they don't like from me. Win-win

Now, with all that said, I want to say some things I've said before, but would like to reiterate loudly and clearly one more time:

You do not have to like Beast x Ancient. It's perfectly fine and reasonable if you don't. It's not for everyone. Whatever your reasons are, I believe and accept them. I post about them a lot because I love them a lot, and I like talking about things I like. I do my best to tag properly so my weirdo babble is easier to filter out. My posts are more or less just preaching to the choir, I think lol. It's fine if you don't like that, it's fine if you don't like BurningCheese or Eternalberry, it's fine if you don't like Beast x Ancient. I am not your mortal enemy if you don't like them. I'm happy to talk to and be friends with people who don't. I already do so often haha

Furthermore, I want you all to know that no matter what I say about ships I don't like, I don't care if you do like them. I am not out to get you for liking things I don't. Which dolls you decide you like to make kiss is not my problem. I am not your mother, I am not your dictator, I am not God. My opinions are just that, no one is obligated to listen to me or take anything I say to heart. Yes, there are ships I legitimately hate with a passion, but I do not hate the people who like them. Not at all. That's a stupid thing to dislike someone for. I talk to and am friends with lots of people who like things I don't, both on here and irl. The world gets really lonely really fast if you refuse to engage with people who don't march lockstep with you. Especially with regards to fucking Cookie Run lol

Let's all give this nonsense a rest now. This is dumb. I'm dumb. We're all dumb. Let's stop being dumb. I'm happy to coexist peacefully with others. We'll all live happier lives focusing more on things we love than things we hate

Funny enough, this is the exact same thing they did with Lila - At the start, she was just this new girl who made up a bunch of stories to make herself look cool to her classmates, and Marinette only took it personally because Adrien was among her targets and basically created her own civilian antagonist for Ladybug by going out her way to humiliate Lila via transforming and publicly calling her out for lying to “protect” Adrien (which was unnecessary since Adrien already knew and was handling it) and gave a pretty halfhearted apology afterwards, causing her to shut herself in at home, and then later had her manipulated and used by Gabriel during Heroes Day. She could have honestly gone either way in terms of her role.

But because acknowledging any of that would no longer make precious Marinette the victim, they instead made Lila out to be this horrible composite liar (with multiple identities and women she’s somehow brainwashed into believing that she’s their daughter) that only Marinette could see through who’s going out of her way to destroy her life because…um, evil I guess?

Exactly. I’ve repeatedly said that Marinette made her own villain in Lila because she has a habit of bullying any new girl who's too close to Adrien. She did it to Lila, she did it to Kagami and she did it to Sublime. Except Lila, the one Marinette harassment the most severely, has been made more and more evil which each appearance to retroactively justify Marinette's treatment of her. The fandom treats the Marinette versus Lila situation as Marinette alone understanding what a threat Lila is to everyone and how harmful her lies supposedly are, when the inciting incident is still that Marinette hated Lila on sight for getting close to Adrien and just wanted to uncover her lies to publicly humiliate her in retaliation.

That's what actually happens in ‘Volpina’; Marinette bullying the new girl for having a crush on the boy she's claimed. But we can't have Marinette be in the wrong, so Lila lashes out in retaliation, which supposedly makes it okay Marinette bullied and harassed her. Miraculous often leans into the idea of perfect victims, that only victims who silently suffer in dignity and never truly get angry and resentful at the people harming them are deserving of sympathy, and any type of lashing out makes you actually worse than the person harming you. Lashing out is only okay when someone else is being harmed, because then you're seeking justice. Try not to get a headache from this.

However, you can't actually use someone's reaction to getting bullied as a justification for said bullying, and I think the writers realized that when they suddenly made Lila into a secret supervillain who's been brainwashing people long before she met Marinette. But, like, anyone can go watch ‘Volpina’ and ‘Chameleon’ and see that everything Lila does to Marinette in those episodes is a retaliation, and the worst she really does is get Akumatized on purpose (something Marinette herself was going to let happen to get Cat Noir to kiss her) and threaten Marinette with her actions having consequences (ala, if she kept publically bullying Lila, their classmates wouldn't think she's cool anymore). It doesn't matter how long Lila has been secretly evil, Marinette didn't know any of this stuff when she decided to hate her on sight.

hold on continueation from that first post i forgot to say. another reason i envy homestuck fandom in part with the different interpretations of characters is how like. you will see a dave strider that looks nothing like dave strider from homestuck comic but yeah its still dave strider. yeah shes a girl now and also black and has a totally different outfit and shes smoking weed or something but despite everything its still dave strider

was refreshing myself on some old myth for a bit and i read the french and english wiki page for the Charybdis' mythos, and i'm noticing something that i don't know if it's just the wiki being inaccurate or an actual difference (from the linguistic page it seems to be an actual difference) but

In English there's this expression about choosing between two equally bad horrible situations by saying "choosing between Scylla and Charybdis"

But in French the expression is "to fall from Charybdis to Scylla" and instead of a choice it's about managing to get out of a horrible situation only to get thrown into an even worse situation (the equivalent of the English's expression ""falling out of the frying pan into the fire")

if i believe the linguistic page there was a bit of borrowing around and technically both expressions are used in both language, but you're more likely to find the first one in English and the second one in French (very likely because Victor Hugo popularized "to fall from Charybdis to Scylla" with Les Misérables) (does not mean it started in French the origin of the expression is still Greek anyway, just talking about why the saying is more popular in French with weirdos like me)

idk i think it's cool on a sort of metatextual perspective that English People saw this myth and when "oof imagine picking between those two" while French people just chugged a bottle of wine and went "And it's a BINGO and LIFE SUCKS and it NEVER GETS EASIER you get BOTH OF THEM BABEYYY"

i mean.

is it unwatchable? no. but also it is not good for sure. would love for it to be a case of "so bad it circles back being somehow good", but unfortunately no, becasue in order to achieve such a thing coppola should have gone camp and embraced the style instead of taking himself too seriously.

there are. ideas. that considered by themselves sort of make sense if you are desperate to find sense in this insanity of a movie, but whether within or without context for the large part they remain disjointed. and are anyway very cringe at core. i don't know how to put it kindly but the script just sucks. and choices were made.
