what makes me feel crazy about neve is that as a human mage of such wit and style and sheer talent—a less academically focused mage than emmrich or bellara and yet capable of some of the greatest feats of raw power in the game, yes i’m still not over her ice dome from the intro holding off shots from the archon’s palace—she absolutely could have gotten out of dock town. maybe she’d never have the life or titles of someone born altus, but she could have made it to somewhere comfortable. she’s the one person in dock town with a ticket out, with the unexpected gift that every tevinter non-mage dreams their children will have... and yet she’s still right there working late into the night in one lonely, run-down apartment after another, because these people need her. because nobody else of her ability has ever stayed for them. she tells herself every day that it’s probably a doomed fight, trying not to get her hopes up and her heart hurt, and she still stays!! i wonder if some people there resent her for having that chance and not taking it. she talks about having cut ties with at least part of her family. do they resent her for not taking the chance (and letting them share in the spoils)?

thinking about the effects of Kira being raised in a refugee camp and never (as far as we know) having a formal education never being addressed on the show properly. she's obviously not a scientist or an engineer but her position as first officer still means that she has to supervise all of the engineers and scientists on ds9 to some degree. and as much as the Starfleet characters are uncomfortable with roughing it and the terrorist tactics Kira still needs to use every once in awhile, i think it's a really underrated idea for Kira to be just as uncomfortable with a lot of the high-concept science thrown around between the Starfleet people. she knows all of the practical stuff she needs to – how to repair essential technology, how to fly ships, how to use weaponry – but i could imagine her being really insecure about not fully understanding the underlying concepts the way everyone in Starfleet does.
anyways, i think Jadzia would pick up on Kira's insecurity eventually and would start giving her secret math lessons to get her up to speed so she can join in on all the Science Talk.

The actual nuanced take on homeschooling is that having few to no regulations allows for a much wider variety of standards across families - some children will be far better educated than their schooled peers, some children will receive practically no education as is the case with some "unschooling" families. It's not inherently evil but it's also not inherently better than school, it depends fully on the parent/adult teaching and how they choose to do it. Frankly this shouldn't be a difficult take.

by the way i think making jitka a lesbian and variations on the theme just to clear the way for the gay ship is a lazy way to remove one of the very things that makes hans and henry’s relationship so compelling—its forbidden nature.
if it were just a matter of conveniently getting rid of a woman so they could be together, then what’s left of the tension, the risk, the weight of their choices? hans and henry shouldn’t get to be together because the narrative conveniently removes all obstacles. even the games made that very clear.
noblemen don’t get to love freely. their status binds them to duty, to alliances, to expectations that crush personal desire. for hans, this isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a fundamental part of his reality. he doesn’t get to simply sidestep the expectations placed on him, and neither does henry.
when you erase that struggle for the sake of convenience, you strip away what makes their story powerful. hans and henry love each other not because it’s simple or possible, they don’t get to love each other just because they want to. they love each other despite the fact that the world will never allow it. and that’s what makes it real and heartbreaking.

my Stephanie Brown hot take is that she should get mad bitches now that she's single in comics. Yes yes shipping BUT the one time she had sex she was punished by the narrative via teen pregnancy. I think she should be allowed to have as much sex as she wants with zero consequences. Could be a lot of sex, could be a little. Point is she should get to do it without getting narratively baby trapped this time. she should get them pregnant, actually.
#ramblings of a lunatic#dc comics#dc#stephanie brown#this is a joke post but it also. isn't#like. i understand that what I'm asking for is a very slippery slope especially in the hands of the average comic writers (hates women sm)#but consider that i think it would be neat if female characters in the batmythos had sex lives again...#babs was out here having cybersex with ted kord in the 90s! helena had sex! black canary had sex and was kinda a gotham chara back then!#cass is generally more interested in justice than in sex and i abide by that#(tho user @casscain-mainly has great meta diving into the portrayal of cass' sexuality! good read and was on the brain while typing this)#steph however? canonical sex haver and got done dirty for it#like. personally i prefer to imagine that steph having sex with dean was 100% her choice#idk man she just felt like it! she wanted to bone#and maybe there's other factors at play there- Dean is by all accounts deeply unpleasant as a person so no doubt-#-stephs chronic low self-esteem played into her choice of man here#but again i like to imagine that it was all sane and consensual (tho not safe which again. lots to ponder there-#-like ik dixon was NAWT thinking abt this at the time but Steph's mom is a nurse. a semi-absent nurse but a nurse nonetheless)#(i find it hard to believe that Steph didn't have a basic sex education. meaning it was either a freak accident she got pregnant-#-or a wildly ooc decision on her part. OR some kind of outside pressure put on her by someone/something)#(we'll never know bc dixon hates me personally)#BUT ANYWAY yeah Steph has some kind of canonical sex drive and is just. soundly punished for it#and then she's with Tim (Paragon of Male Virtue in Dixons eyes) so no sex whatsoever no no no ☝️#and she's never had a seriously considered love interest outside of Tim to ever consider having sex with#ALL THIS TO SAY. let Steph have sex again but without the narrative punishment in 2025#if this is what it takes to get her back in bat books so be it#also she should get to hook up with some age appropriate fellow heroes. as like fun one offs#who's in her age range? blue beetle (jaime)? circuit breaker? assuming we're trying to make this canonical and (sigh) can't pull women#I'm blanking on men who aren't vaguely too old/young for steph or gay. or just awkward (i.e like. kon el. that'd just feel weird yknow?)#ANYWAY yeah. I'm so tired, I'm so so tired.
Watching TV shows has become the most tiring thing in this dystopian, late-stage capitalistic hellscape.
It doesn't matter how much we love those shows, how much we talk about them, how much we promote it online. Big streaming services will just cancel them on a Friday night and then let them slowly fall into oblivion. If by SOME MIRACLE the show doesn't get cancelled after the first season, it'll just decline over the years, some crazy writer will cook up a poorly written plot, or they'll just lose interest in the project and then leave the fans in the trenches.
Big corporate streaming services just think that views are gonna materialize out of thin air??? They barely promote their new shows and they DEMAND high views just to let them keep going? It's THEIR JOB to promote shows, but obviously they couldn't care less, they only care about money, and they leave the promoting job to the fans which is batshit insane if you ask me.
Streaming services were supposed to be the solution, the chosen one if you will, but they turned out to be the villains.
Owning a movie or a show is now absolutely impossible because God forbid they release DVDs anymore. Streaming services will just randomly DELETE their cancelled shows and movies from their platforms. Fans are now supposed to be PR teams for Netflix, HBO, Prime and whatever other stupid streaming apps out there because they couldn't be bothered to,,, idk,,, do their job and promote their own shows!? They're literally acting like villains.
It feels dystopic really.
I know I probably sound like a person yelling at a cloud but it's starting to become exhausting.
And I know that there are far worse things out there, that there are more important matters to focus on, but I'm so tired.
They're killing art. There are so many people out there that put all their love and all their passion and skills into creating amazing shows that SO MANY other people love and they feel represented by, but they don't care.
This is literally my last straw.
They're killing art with their greed.

You know what could have been a really cool AvEducation episode?
Animation vs Chess.
We've got Yellow on one side, playing the black pieces. He's the expert, all confident, technically the antagonist of this episode.
And on the other side, we have Blue. Blue knows the rules of chess, enough to play, but he is still a beginner. He will play against Yellow, learning bit by bit as the game continues.
They're in the void, and I think it would be cool if the pieces start out maybe the size of those games of "big chess", you know the ones. For the lawn or whatever. But as the game goes on and Blue falters, the pieces grow until they tower over him and it becomes much harder to get around.
I don't think Yellow would take it easy on him per say, but he might pause, maybe give little hints ("don't move or I'll be able to get you, quick take that pawn", that kind of thing)
Blue not only takes his advice, but actually learns, observing Yellow's own moves and imitating it. Maybe at one point, Yellow would give him a hint that was meant to trip him up a bit, but by now Blue knows enough to not fall for it.
In the end, I don't think Blue would be able to beat Yellow. You don't go from being a beginner to beating a master in one game. But Yellow is a good sport, and Blue wants to get better, so they settle in for another game.

can I also just - so everytime I've come across a piece of Ed art where his skin is too light, I've sent an anon ask or DM to the artist - explaining very politely why they should redo the piece and the history of racism in this fandom. And every single time (except one asshole), artists have reacted well to this and understood my point, and some have even reposted the piece after correcting their mistake.
Idk that makes me happy, to have the freedom to say that and not have to deal with butthurt artists. Most people are kind, but you have to start from a place of trying to educate and idk not start a witchhunt, if you truly genuinely want them to do better.

People will see two characters who are entirely devoted to each other and whose lives are intertwined in cosmic ways, and be like "what if they were just buddies? 😊" But then one second later go ape shit about a more popular ship with less than half the chemistry, but a dynamic that is considered more appropriate for the surface level, overused, interchangeable fandom tropes that have replaced any sort of genuine character interpretation

Reading Arthur's journal. The man has prettier handwriting than I do and then I came across this:
"I love Dutch like a father but in many ways, I love Hosea even more. He's kind and fair and like a human being. Dutch is something else."
Me: "And you stay with Dutch because...?"
The way Arthur writes about Hosea with more fondness than with Dutch speaks volumes. I mean there are parts in his journal where he seems to doubt Dutch in his leadership decisions. That's how his writing comes off to me at least. Sure, you can still love someone as a father but to believe in their leadership is another ball game.
For example, Arthur says "Dutch being Dutch those plans involve robbery and dreams." Dreams is underlined for a reason too.
Oh darlin' you should've left when you had the chance.
