when we spent our morning talking about the connection between trc and christianity as two non-christians. anyway this made me feel insane.
Bear with me here:
I’m rereading Blue Lily, Lily Blue and Adam and Gansey are in his apartment in the church and Gansey is getting anxious which Adam doesn’t want to see so he’s looking away and then! “[Gansey’s] anxiety transubstantiated to wry deprecation” (98). Transubstantiation is the doctrine of the Eucharist in Christianity which is the conversion of bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus while maintaining the appearance of bread and wine. So, Gansey is like, maintaining the appearance of something ordinary while becoming something Godly while sitting in a fucking church.
Adam doesn’t want to watch this transubstantiation maybe because he’s still uncomfortable with his own otherness in his connection to Cabeswater (also religious imagery), and he’s convinced himself that he is inherently different from the rest of the gang because of his deal. If he watches Gansey demonstrate his own Godliness then he has to acknowledge the fact that every one of them has some deeper part of their being, beyond the appearance of something straight-forward like bread and wine, which he’s not ready to confront. So yeah, thanks Catholic school, I guess you’re teaching me something?

omg you’ve read the listeners?? I haven’t seen anyone else from the fandom read it yet, can I hear your thoughts??
obviously spoilers****
YES YES YES!!! let’s discuss PLEASE.
i really loved this book. it was very maggie stiefvater. the magic. the characters. the setting. 10/10.
the sweetwater being of the place and holding the feelings of the people in the place?? so obsessed with this. also very interested in sweetwater’s connection to sweetmetals (the dreamer trilogy). i don’t have any insight on that but i do enjoy the maggie of it all.
in the flashback to tucker’s childhood, the water is not turning because the people are bad or evil, it’s turning because all there is in this place for the people that live there is a mine and death and labor and so the primary feelings those people have to give is exhaustion and grief and loss. this idea of the interconnection of place and people gets me every time.
at the maggie talk i went to, she discussed this idea of luxury and what it really means. that it’s not just about Things. it’s that luxury allows people to be treated as individuals rather than a number or a demographic. i think we see this so well in the listeners, obviously with the treatment of the diplomats in the hotel, but also behind the scenes and in the town. and i think it speaks to people like june hudson and hannelore — the listeners — who recognize the inherent individuality of all people and pay attention to the little things, they hear the things not said. and i think the fact that those people can hear and feel and appease the water speaks both to their innate power/ influence, but also the drain of constantly attending to others.
at the end of the book the water has to be set free and can freely flood the standard of luxury that has been taken as untouchable — the sadness, desperation, and hatefulness of the people that inhabited the land and the building can’t be kept at bay. really what i think the listeners talks about is the continued memory and feelings of the water and the earth.

oh AND something about adam parrish — through scrying — meeting ronan in dreamspace. something about ronan not just being with ronan and ronan and ronan for a little while because adam parrish came to find ronan lynch in his dreams, on purpose.
if everyone in your dreams is you, then ronan’s dreams are all just different versions of him. matthew, in all his goodness, his unfiltered, unrelenting joy is ronan or a part of ronan — an extension of him. that ronan’s night horrors — these terrible, unreal, creatures that only want to kill him — are really just an extension of him. that opal in her orphaned stangeness is just ronan; her childlish wonder, her inherent and complete understanding of the dreaming world, but also her complete terror, her need for a protector is just ronan. that bryde — a dreamt teacher, a man with all the answers — is just a part of ronan that ronan can’t admit he has access to. that everytime ronan dreams of his dad or adam or declan, it’s really just ronan and ronan and ronan. it feels like haunting your own life. in the dream world, ronan cannot escape ronan — every version of himself, weather past, present, or future is meeting and existing and coming into the waking world all at once. in a way it’s a living record of ronan’s life, his subconscious, his past selves.

um yeah and i did get to meet maggie and i did get to tell her about my trc tattoo and she did say “how very page of cups of you” and she did sign the page i have said tattoo for and wrote “excelsior!” of her on volition and she did laugh at my extremely tabbed and annotated books. and i will never be sleeping again.
