may i talk a bit about how i like to interpret Travis as a gay man

I just think it would sorta make sense. He was raised in a redneck southern family, where his younger brother who's a father and who had a wife is definitely the favorite child. So this already shows the values of the Hacketts pretty well, they are traditional as hell and this whole "family is the most important" thing.

And Travis is the black sheep of the family. From the scene with Constance, particularly Travis' reaction I believe it was *not* the first time she has gone off at him like that, seeing how he just basically stands there and takes it, like he's used to this. We don't know much about their life before the curse etc, but assuming she has treated him like this for a longer while, him being gay and therefore 'against the traditional family archetype' could be a possible reason for this treatment.

I don't wanna just say "he's single" as an argument because there are many reasons for people to be single, but I just wanna say that looking through this lense at it would also make sense. Once again, given his family background, it would make sense if he just gave up on romance altogether because he'd know his family would never accept it. And family is the most important.

And I also think he absolutely would not come out to them, especially Constance, but she *could* catch on at some point, which would build the distance we see between Travis and the rest of the Hacketts during the game. He still loves them, he covers for them and tries his best to fix their problems - but at the same time it looks like he's not as close with his family as in the past.

(I'd like to think Chris could actually be accepting of Travis if he ever did come out, seeing how he spends the most time with the youth where being LGBTQ+ is more normalized, so he definitely witnessed some non-heteronormative romance among the youngsters. Maybe even Ryan could be the one to come out to him, or at least talk about his sexuality as he's trying to figure himself out, given that Chris is a father figure to him. And from the small amount of knowledge we have, a pretty good one at that. But at the same time I do think Travis would be the type to keep this to himself, and just bottle it up alone rather than vocalizing the internal struggle about being different.)

my thoughts on dead boy detectives season 1

- the season should have had more episodes we should’ve had more time for characters to develop connections and do a deeper dive into the intimacies of charles and edwin’s friendship

- the special effects were slay at times the pain wraith and the angler fish very very cool

- hate hate hate the romance between crystal and charles actually the biggest problem I have with the show even more than the occasionally shit dialogue (which at least did get better as the season progressed)

- devastated that we won’t have cat king in season 2 he deserves to be forever hope he comes back somehow which his relationship with edwin was again tied up with a perfect bow but ig they just wanted to end his arc here I just think he’s an interesting enough character that they could’ve kept him and his toying of edwin going longer

- the genre of this show was baffling and sometimes too harsh of a shift between scenes

- very funny tho aces on the comedy front they were funny guys

- niko and edwin were SoulMates they were the definition of mlm and wlw solidarity and they were the most important relationship of all

- really though niko and crystal would be a thing big bummer on that side

- in a perfect world they would’ve gotten at least 15 episodes to flesh out the world and story at a slower pace and season 1 could be about edwin discovering he’s into boys while season 2 can then be about his Specific boy things just felt too rushed at times (and I know part of that is the limitations placed on the showrunners very limited episodes and you have to conclude your season satisfyingly enough due to the high possibility that you don’t get another season so I Get making the ending like that and having all these boxes checked off so if there is a season 2 you can make new boxes to check but some boxes need to be left unchecked!!! at least for a bit everything just felt too perfectly tied up with a bow I would’ve liked to see less of a resolution in regards to the afterlife catching them don’t love that after 30 years they only now get the Perfect solution to their existence)

My more in depth thoughts on Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies ep 8 (1/4?)

CYNTHIA’S COMPULSORY HETROSEXUALITY

Obviously the whole Cynthia/Shy Guy plot is to cover Cynthia’s compulsory heterosexuality and is quite natural given the time period. I think that’s probably the reason behind the dress and makeup this episode as well - as in its shows her outward desire to conform to what’s expected of her and so she tries to copy the other pink ladies.

Lydia’s “you can’t pull that off” line was really interesting to me though because throughout the series it’s already kind of been established that Cynthia and Lydia can have conversations without ever saying anything to each other out loud. So what I think that line actually directly translates into is “I don’t believe you actually like him”. And this triggers Cynthia because she did the dress, the makeup, all of which make her so uncomfortable in order to hide her true character almost like a suit of armour to protect herself but Lydia STILL sees through it and that scares her so she backs herself further into this corner by calling Shy Guy her boyfriend. And that’s why she tries it on with Shy Guy in the kitchen - almost like she’s trying to convince herself that she can like men but when it doesn’t change anything she projects this onto Shy Guy by saying he’s not a “real man”. It’s another defence mechanism, almost like she’s so sure that if he was a “real man” then she would like it so it’s not her fault. The problem is despite her feelings being valid, she hurts those around her in the process.

I also wonder if we’re seeing her story mirroring Shy Guy’s. If the show does goes down this root of Shy Guy also being queer, it would make sense as to why he seems to like Cynthia out of all the girls because of her masc/butch presentation. And why when Cynthia kisses him, he pulls away because maybe he’s realising that he actually doesn’t like her like that either. I also cant stop thinking about that short scene in ep 8 when he’s stood by the car with a few of the thespian guys (all of the thespians are queer and I will die on that hill) but it definitely looks like they’re nodding towards him - as if they kind of recognise him as queer as well (gaydar anyone?). It would be nice if the show took this root because if so, when he and Cynthia hopefully makeup, it would be cool to see some mlm/wlw solidarity.

Obviously it could also be that he’s feeling self-conscious about Cynthia’s comments - the thespian guys don’t fit into the category of stereotypical masculinity and it may be that he’s trying to figure out how to fit into that stereotype and they make him self-conscious. Shy Guy’s whole character arc seems to revolve around masculinity and how he can show that masculinity and the softness that comes more naturally to his character at the same time much like the subplot in ep 7 with his father and the boxing. So for Cynthia to say he’s not a “real man” probably cuts really deep.

I just hope we get everything between Cynthia and Shy Guy resolved in the next two episodes because I need them to go back to being besties.

The easiest one to explain for obvious reasons— exactly what you see in canon! Long term girlfriends who are romantically involved and very in love♡

-Vaggie and Angel-

Platonic, wlw-mlm solidarity. They're actually really good friends! You would never guess it, considering they argue nonestop, and Angel LOVES to push Vaggies' buttons, lol. But they've built a solid friendship and are absolutely ride or die for each other. And Charlie. The glue that holds them together is Charlie, for sure.

-Angel and Charlie-

Queerplatonic! This one is the most ambiguous and hard to explain; it's definitely platonic but a much different flavor than what Angel and Vaggie are. A little more physically affectionate, I'd say (cuddling, cheek kisses etc) but definitely not romantic.

(I personally hc Angel as aromantic/demi-romantic, but even if he wasn't, he and Charlie would still be platonic. My boy is gay as fuck lol)

The best way i can describe their energy is if you imagined two Girlfriends adopting a cat together. One of them did not want the cat but has become unfortunately attached to it and the other snuggles the cat nonestop and was the one who picked it up off street going "WE HAVE TO KEEP IT :("

And hes very touched by them caring about him, and it feels nice to have such close platonic bonds. The girls were the first people to truly reach out to him and try to help him get better, and i just. I could say so much on it? Obviously, this is what Charlie does. She wants to help people! She saw Angel and immediately knew he was a good person. She saw a part of him nobody else did.

And then you have Vaggie, who yeah at first didn't care much for Angel. But overtime i think she realizes the two of them have a lot in common.

Something Something the mutual bonding of knowing they'd both have never made it without Charlie believing they were both worth helping.

((Also Angel, at least here in my headcanons, has a notable relationship with Husk and Alastor as well! Which has its own brands of romantic and QPR But thats a different post altogether lol Angel has four hands okay one for each of them))

okay this was a random thought that came to me during a combo of rewatching of Word of Honor and reading a post that declared Word of Honor “didn’t count” on their BL list of whatever the fuck and here’s the thought, here’s the vibe, Word Of Honor has a lot in common with Xena: Warrior Princess

Everyone kinda knows that Xena - and by extension Lucy Lawless - as a bisexual/queer woman icon, and that Xena/Gabrielle is probably still one of the most prominent wlw ships in western canon. That’s a huge part of the shows iconography in pop culture. But like, if you rewatch the show, things between Xena and Gabrielle are kept pretty ambiguous but in that ambiguously totally gay way (like WenZhou!). 

The network was actively against Xena and Gabrielle being more than, what fans would probably call nowadays, bait. An executive told producer Rob Tapert that by making Xena and Gabrielle explicit there would be a surge of interested followed by a sharp decline. 

It should be noted that Xena was already a controversial show for it’s era - not just for the gay subtext but under fire from religious groups, anti-feminist groups, and others. 

The showrunners and producers also didn’t intend for Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship to, eh, blossom the way it did. Fans ran with it. Ironically, the intention of the show was to push Xena’s men of color love interests which also made the network gun shy (remember folks racism exists alongside homophobia!). 

Xena and Gabrielle operated in a highly censored space (that still exists in American media btw!! Take it from someone who knows first hand) that was beholden to network hand-wringing, capitalism, and societal homophobia at large.  So their relationship could only live within an ambiguous space. Ironically enough, just like WenZhou, Xena and Gabrielle are also referred to as “soulmates” in the text of the show. But ya know, sometimes soulmates are platonic, sometimes romantic. Which are WenZhou and Xena/Gabrielle? Well that’s up for the viewer to decide b/c the production teams hands are tied. 

Even so, even with the censorship, we all still view Xena as legitimate queer representation within the pop culture space. Why? Why Xena and not Word of Honor?

For me, they both count, especially WoH because it’s source material IS queer. But the filter of censorship snipped and cut the text away so everything would be forced to live within that ambiguous “up to the audience aka gotta make the advertisers comfortable” space. 

I don’t think it’s fair to throw WoH out because the production couldn’t, like they were not allowed, to showcase text on screen. Similar to Xena queer fans knew that her and Gabrielle were in love, soulmates (romantic) by the end (where Xena dies, like literal for reals death she’s ashes carried on by Gabby at the end btw spoiler alert for a 20 year old show at least WK got silver hair and immortality out of his death experience). 

Queer fans appreciated and cultivated what Xena gave us because, no offense but what the fuck else was there? Not a lot, and even less in the fantasy space. Hell, there’s still not a lot of queer representation in the fantasy space we’re only just now going “hey maybe Tolkien’s ultra white British view of things is not the only way to do things?" And now House of Dragon has Black actors in terrible wigs (they’re so fucking bad rip) in 2022. Woooo~ most queer chars in western fantasy media are mainly found in kids cartoons - which, fucking aces there but also - probably why there’s so many adults in those spaces in fandom (not my bag personally) and why I think the popularity of danmei, c-dramas, and k-dramas is on the rise. People are hungry for epic fantasy content, epic romance content, and queer content. 

but like, I think about queer folks who live in China, who watched WoH (ya know, the intended audience, not Americans) who are probably feeling the same thing people felt when they watched Xena. Yeah, Mr. Advertiser Xena and Gabrielle are soulmates (platonic) wink wink, Yeah Mr. Network ZZS and WKX are soulmates (platonic) wink wink

and I think that’s still valuable. idk I just don’t think it’s right for foreigners to be like “no you’re queer media doesn’t count actually because I deem it so” when the reason for the relationship being subtextual is literal censorship. And yet the text is hella gay anyway!! like at the end of the day we’re all battling the crushing weight of homophobia but not everyone’s fight is exactly the same especially country-to-country and I think that should still be respected. given how damn gay WoH is anyway I imagine the producers fought really fucking hard to give audiences what they did. Just like the producers of Xena fought against the network to do what they could.

A stupid headcanon I have

Look, I get that Lightning Lynx (Archie Sonic) was written as an incel. When I read it seriously, that's the take I have.

However, I have one headcanon that I think is simultaneously much funnier and much sadder than canon. What if Lightning was trying to say that he loved Conquering Storm as a sister? I hear you asking, "but Ana, what about the honor duel?" Yeah, dude, siblings fight all the time. I, personally, once kicked my sister's tooth out, and we're besties now. I've not had access to full Archie comics, so I can't verify the exact wording myself, but did Lightning explicitly say (1) that he loved Conquering Storm romantically and (2) that he specified an honor duel?

It would be a bit funny if the whole thing was a misunderstanding, but also, imagine how awful Lightning and maybe even Conquering Storm would each feel? Assuming they were even a little bit close, which I can't recall being specified anywhere (but makes sense because why else would Lightning stake everything on this and why else would Conquering Storm immediately take him back when she wanted an ambassador?), then just imagine it.

On Lightning's end, this sister figure mocks (?) him for his feelings and affection for her and banishes him over what he (maybe) meant to be a friendly version of Sibling Squabbling (TM). On CS's end, this (maybe) friend of hers suddenly out of nowhere declares his love for her, which she thinks is romantic, and challenges her to a duel.

This is made a little funnier again by the fact that I ALSO interpret Lightning and CS as mlm/wlw solidarity.
