I've said it before and I'll say it again: Midst is a perfectly-paced show. I know the story arcs are largely outlined, but it is actually astounding how flawless the pacing is given the improv aspect. It's clearly created by people who understand on an intrinsic level when and how plot points need to land in order for it to flow smoothly. Absolute chef's kiss, infinity/10, perfect pacing, no notes because I am in fact taking notes.

Okay first of all Max looks at the audience and camera in pretty much every scene he's in at least once I had to make a collage to get these examples in here and I still whittle them down

You know who else explicity looked at and sang at the audience in a metatextual way??

Hannah

Hannah, on some level, knows the narrative. She knows the world's nature and the nature of a musical being a 'time loop' of sorts, which is why she sings of tomorrow never coming. A dawn never breaking.

Webby's the Queen of the White, right? And what is dawn, really, if not bringing in the light of day to the darkness of night?

Both characters seem to share an intrinsic understanding of their world, whether comprehensible or not, and on some level are aware of its function. There's a chaos to their worlds and they always end in an apocalypse, but it's all practiced. It's all a loop. (roz and guil moment tbh)

But what I'm proposing, is that Max is a Hannah gone wrong. He can see the audience, understand the narrative and his place in it ("Don't need no-one to tell me, high school will be my peak, so I'm willing to take advantage" ) (" you can leave, but you won't, stay in your seat") but doesn't have the full scope of awareness that Hannah does. Hannah can see Webby and understand the story straight from the source, while Max pieces it together from the audience. Maybe Webby tried to explain things through them and Max just horribly misinterpreted it. Maybe he knows exactly what he's doing and has given up trying to find another solution. Maybe he never had a chance to escape the web in the first place.

Maybe webby gives him directions, tried to explain things to him, tried to get him to see the order beyond the world like Hannah, but it just never landed as well. What could really have spawned a god complex more than getting a glimpse at the True Nature of The World and knowing you're the one to make it happen. But Webby is the queen of the White, so it only seems to reason she brings Light to Darkness.

So not only am I going to say that Max is a Webby prophet, but also I ask you, where do you think his god complex came from?

(also he like deadass controlled the lights like straight up just made it darker the bitch controlled the lights why does no-one else care about that but me-)

TL;DR: Max is a Webby prophet currently stuck on the recieving end of the world's worst game of Divine Interpretation telephone and is taking it Really Well 👍

Any recs for aroace characters?

I wish I could give you some tbh, I am still in search of good ace characters myself. Most medias I’ve come across with aroace characters haven’t been the best or most realistic representation imo (aka the “emotionless character” or a robot or an alien or a villain or whatever the fuck). I’ve heard Jar of Rebuke, Hello from the Hallowoods, and Old Gods of Appalachia have ace characters and I’m considering listening to those but I haven’t yet so idk if it’s good rep. I think I heard The Penumbra Podcast has one too? I’ve heard Bojack Horseman has a good ace rep character but I refuse to watch that show so 😭

another interesting thing i noticed in early access is that for the first few days nobody has a tent at camp and they all just sit around the fire with their bedrolls?? and i initially thought, huh, i guess EA just hadn't added the tents yet.

but then all the companions eventually did get tents!! though unlike the full release they're plain, undecorated and unpersonalized.

makes sense--you could assume that right after suddenly getting abducted and tadpoled, we didn't have much if any gold left on us and after a few days we could finally afford to get individual tents. or more likely they just hadn't designed/implemented the full release tents yet and these were placeholders.

but that makes me think it would've been so cool if the tents kept progressing throughout the game, to become more personalized and include more things that the companions collect or buy or make during our journey, until they eventually became what they currently are in the final release. because it is so crazy to me that everyone just has tons of stuff immediately upon being recruited.

Something I love sm about like neurodivergence being more understood now among ppl my age is that I don’t try and mask my stims anymore and it makes potentially overwhelming experiences so much more enjoyable or easier to handle. Like certain experiences used to be hard for me to be present in because of how overwhelmed I was but now I can wear a mask and headphones and shake my hands and click my teeth as much as I want and suddenly I’m having an amazing time. And I 🫶 my audhd friends for understanding and being the same as me gah it’s nice to be understood 😩💖
