- before events of the game -

kris came into class a little late again, slept in again. they'd been doing that more often lately. …how long had that been going on actually? noelle hadn't noticed when it first started and the frequency was so gradual that it now being twice or three time a week wasn't even shocking. had something been wrong? was something keeping them up at night? did they have nightmares like she did?

a tap on her shoulder made her jump, but luckily she didn't make a sound.

she looked over her shoulder to see kris reaching out to her. they didn't speak, alphys was talking a little too loud for their normal soft voice to be heard, so they just mouthed "pencil?"

she smiled and huffed a sigh through her nose. she reached in her desk to grab a pencil, one with christmas sugar cookies printed on the outside, and passed it back into their waiting hand.

kris' mouth opened again. they didn't say thank you. instead their brows furrowed looking at her. had she made an odd face?

whatever they were going to say was interupted as alphys turned back toward the class and asked "any questions?"

so noelle turned back toward the front of the room and kris leaned back into their chair. the interaction ended.

she never found out what they were going to say, but after lunch when she got back to her desk, her pencil had been returned. along with it was a little eraser, with a pumpkin making a blushy smily face printed on the top.

noelle laughed fondly and looked back at kris. "thanks for the present, kris!"

"mhm." they didn't look up from whatever they were writing in their notebook.

but they'd smiled.

noelle thought it was gonna be okay.
