im gonna make this unrebloggable to prevent doomspiraling particularly bc its VERY early in the era to be thinking about this but i just wanna get my worries about dw off my chest

im kinda worried about our prospects for next showrunner after RTD cause like. before its been pretty clear cut. moffat won 3 hugos and was nominated for a fourth during RTD's first era, then chibnall had run the first two series of torchwood. but i worry that RTD isnt going to hire any writers of color who are willing or able to take on the position of showrunner. looking it up, it seems like there are plenty of people who would probably be great but the problem is interest. like it would be totally understandable for writers of color to not be willing to take on the big commitment of helming a show as popular as doctor who, especially when it has been (lets be real) pretty damn racist for the VAST majority of its 60+ year history. in fact it would be totally understandable for them to not be interested in writing for dw at all considering how white the show is. RTD is really going to have to make a good environment for them in order to get people on board in the first place but i just doubt if he'll hire writers of color who are willing to take on the show after him. my honest prediction here is i kind of think he'll hand it off to a white woman if even that, which sucks.

anyway heres a (very short) list of people who i think would be good to take over after RTD or at least would be great writing an episode. that said i dont watch basically any TV aside from dw so im basing this off whether theyve done things that seem similar

jo ho: british-chinese woman, created CBBC series spirit warriors

sumerah srivastav: british south asian woman, wrote for lupin

namsi khan: british pakistani woman, wrote for the his dark materials show

anna ssemuyaba: has written a few different things of very different tones (period, action, sci fi, comedy) but what really interests me is this quote from her "I want to create TV shows that explore the inconvenient truths that rule British society, looking at our culture through the prism of subversive humor, rather than being preachy" which i think could serve dw well

daniel lawrence taylor: black man, wrote timewasters which is about a jazz combo that travels back to the 1920s

it is frustrating sometimes watching anime youtubers talk about isekai, and bring up Sword Art: Online, and talk about it in a way that makes it clear that like... the existence of .hack and the fact that like... it was pretty fucking huge and well known and from what I have seen of SAO must have been influential because like. I have not seen or read SAO, and so like, even if the creator of SAO has not played or watched read an entry in the .hack series, he's clearly consumed media influenced by it, right????

like I know .hack didn't create the like... 'trapped in a video game' genre, and I'm not saying all anime in the like... 'quasi-isekai, but it's an MMORPG' genre are .hack inspired, or owe something to .hack as a series...

I don't know exactly what point I'm trying to make specifically. But so much credit goes to SAO, and clearly it inspired a lot of the modern interest and web novels. I understand it's responsible at least for the resurgence of the genre.

But. I also feel like the way some people talk about SAO it's like... "How do I make people become fully aware of this other thing I feel is much better???" which I think is probably very self serving but also like. ugh the .hack series was really cool. I really wish we could bring it back and give it the credit it deserved. Sure not every entry was great, but I loved it. I think many anime fans would be happier with .hack as a reference point instead of SAO...

The Ryoko Kui interview's reception is such a disaster over a pretty normal (yet still flawed) interview between a non-Japanese fan and Japanese artistic. This is discourse for discourse's sake, and it's no surprise that almost every Twitter user I've looked at who's using this interview to parade Kui around as a goated mangaka standing strong against Western ideology is anti-trans.

Like, I do think the interview was kinda wonky with its focus on fandom culture, which Kui clearly didn't have much interest in. But sometimes that happens. Sometimes interactions between two people, especially a fan and a creator, two people who view and interact with a piece of media in completely opposite perspectives, don't click. Does this really need to get blown up into a "West vs. East culture war" issue.

Anyways, Kui saying "I don't consider my audience's interpretations when writing. I leave it to their imaginations, but I have my own read on things too" is the healthiest, most normal thing an artist/writer who wants a non-parasocial audience could say. Artists and writers use this line all the time. If Kui didn't enjoy autistic Laius or Farcille headcanons, she would have probably voiced/signalled her discomfort, like she did on the topic of Senshi fanservice. Overall, Kui handled the interview really well. Props to her to sticking to her guns and keeping a healthy disconnect from the fandom. While I think the interviewer could've/should've been more tactful and restrained, the flaws in their questions is not a symptom of the woke mind virus trying to wriggle its way into the pure Japanese psyche. It's the sign of an over-eager fan who sees a piece of fiction differently than its creator.

Holy shit it’s been another year????? The hell?????

Also! Your art style is gorgeous and that being found in 2023 and then refined throughout late 2023 and the entirety of 2024 really shows, as does your growth in panel layouts, perspective, and — as you said — experimentation. If you ever post your animation or video game art I’m looking forward to it.

As cheesy as it sounds, being able to laugh at funny comics and look at all the details of your art really made my 2024 brighter, even when things were hard. Including looking at your older art— it doesn’t need to be new to be enjoyable! I’m glad your art is well loved and it’s a privilege to have been here since the (near) beginning. I hope you take care of yourself in 2025 and beyond!

Thank you so much for keeping up with my art journey throughout these last two years! Two years!!! I am baffled at how that feels both too long and too short!

Admittedly, my art summary didn't manage to capture the fact that I did a lot of comic layouts that I'm really proud of. I also drew more backgrounds and made some very detailed works (*Dungeon Meshi spoilers for these examples*).

The growth is lot more evident when comparing my 'best' comics of 2023 to 2024:

Sometimes the growth is vertical, sometimes it is horizontal - and damn, sometimes it goes out of sight into the Z-plane. But it is always happening!
