Mio, in her typical fashion, had seemed fine. Concerned for her beloved uncle, but largely unaffected. Her eyes had been sharp and analytical in the way they were when she was still processing. Kimi was sure she would have a flood of questions coming her way later, but for the time being, the Chibi-hime was just fine.

Kichi, on the other hand, was a bit more rattled. 

The tween boy sat on the couch, reeling from the fresh revelations, and the panic-inducing sight of his uncle covered in blood.

"Konpeito?" she squatted in front of the couch, "Little sweet, are you alright?"

"I dunno," he mumbled absently.

She hummed, brushing his hair behind his ear.

"Do you wanna talk to Mama about it?"

"Is Uncle Kenshi a bad man?"

Humming again before sighing, she rocked back on her heels before steadying herself.

"I think, that is a complicated question, with no simple answer. It will depend on who you ask."

"What do you think?"

"I think society would tell you he is. I think I've never much cared what society thinks. I don't always agree, or approve, of everything your uncle does. But I accept it, because I accept and love him."

He pursed his lips, less agitation, more confusion, trying to muddle through the concept.

"Think of it this way, you don't like it, or agree or approve, of Mio-hime eating the last cookie right? But even if you're upset with her, you'd never do anything to hurt her because of it."

He blinked, owlish and open.

"This is the same. We may not always like what Uncle Kenshi does, but we love him. He is family. We protect our family. That means keeping quiet about what he does. We support him and keep him safe."

"Family first. Always. Right?" He sought approval, to smooth his confusion and insecurity.

"Yes, Konpeito-Kichi, exactly. It doesn't matter what Uncle Kenshi does or doesn't do. We protect and love him. Because he is ours. You have to decide for yourself how you feel about his actions and choices but…"

"Family first," the boy seemed a bit more sure of himself. Settled.

She smiled, cupping the boy’s face, laughing when he put on an exaggerated grimace to the kiss she planted between his brows.

"He may not fit conventional accepted standards, but he's our Kenshi-Tenshi, and he's perfect the way he is."

The boy smiled back at her, still a bit subdued but much more settled, and started to say something when-

"Uncle Tenshi is the best!" 

The woman let out a soft “oof” as the child shaped missile plowed into her side, and knocked her off balance.

Kimi laughed at her youngest, and after a second’s pause Daikichi joined her.

"Indeed little princess, indeed."
