Last month, California, Arizona, and Nevada agreed to conserve 3 million acre-feet of Colorado River water—about a trillion gallons—through 2026 in order to protect their drinking supply. The agreement will likely cause big changes for one especially thirsty user: hay. So-called forage crops such as alfalfa and Bermuda grass, which are used to feed livestock, require large amounts of water to cultivate. For the next three years, the states agreed to pay cities, irrigation districts, and Native American tribes $1.2 billion to use less water, including paying many farmers not to farm.

Agriculture accounts for almost 80 percent of the water consumed in the Colorado River Basin each year, and alfalfa is responsible for more than a third of that drain.

Alfalfa, a nutrient-rich option for feeding dairy and beef cattle, produces a huge amount of protein per acre. But that bounty comes with high water use. Alfalfa has a long growing season (another plus for farmers), a deep root system, and a leafy, dense canopy that needs plenty of moisture to stay green. That’s not the whole story: Water-rights laws incentivize ranchers to use as much river water as they’re allotted, or else risk losing access to the unused portion in the future. And because the Colorado River has afforded cheap water to many western districts, wasteful irrigation methods have not gone out of fashion. That includes a technique called “flood irrigation,” which is exactly what it sounds like: watering hundreds of alfalfa acres at a time by briefly flooding the field.

It’s a popular solution; the practice is simple to implement, might help recharge underground aquifers, and can create temporary havens for migrating birds. But it’s also wildly inefficient. So are those “central pivot” sprinklers that water perfect circles of crops—the ones that look from an airplane window or a satellite like scattered green coins. Those steel arms sweeping across the fields are less wasteful than flood irrigation but below the efficiency achieved by drip systems. Arizona and California alfalfa watered by these sprinklers can soak up several hundred gallons a minute for a 130-acre field. In contrast, a typical eight-minute shower at home uses about 16 gallons. All told, alfalfa swallows triple the water used by everyone in the region to shower, water lawns, and do laundry.

California’s Imperial Valley, a juggernaut of hay output, laps up more water than anywhere in the whole Colorado River Basin, accounting for nearly 80 percent of the state’s allotment. Much of the roughly 2.5 million acre-feet of water that the All-American Canal brings into the valley goes to alfalfa fields. Located in the Sonoran Desert, it’s one of the hottest places in California and one of the driest too. All of that poses a problem for alfalfa, which gets stressed when soil moisture drops and temperatures climb. In order to keep the fields healthy in hot places such as the Imperial Valley, southern Arizona, and central Nevada, farms make up the difference in other ways, primarily by using irrigation. Alfalfa can require the equivalent of dozens of inches of precipitation in a single growing season. Because regions like the Imperial Valley receive a fraction of that, farmers turn to water sources such as the Colorado River to make up the rest.

Farmers working in unforgiving desert climates have their own reasons for cultivating alfalfa. For one, with enough irrigation, it can handle the ferocious summers in the West better than many fruit and vegetable varieties. Alfalfa is also profitable: From 2012 to 2021 in California, it fetched more dollars a ton than any other hay variety. Alfalfa is important to agriculture in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah, among the driest states in the country, all of which depend on the Colorado River.

In fact, much of the Colorado River is exported as hay. Rising demand for dairy products and beef across the globe are driving up the demand; by one estimate, 40 percent of the alfalfa grown in California in 2020 was exported.

When states and the federal government come to the table to finalize plans for the river cuts, they’ll have to balance those financial gains against the water requirements of the Southwest’s people, ecosystems, and other crops. Meanwhile, the federal government still needs to review last month’s deal, and the states and the other parties involved will have to hammer out the finer points over the next several months.

Another Example of Revised Financials

Dentsply Sirona, the world’s largest supplier of dental equipment, filed its latest quarterly report this week. That gives us an excellent opportunity to review how Calcbench can help you study financial restatements — because Dentsply had plenty of facts it had to restate.

For those who don’t know the history, Dentsply Sirona ($XRAY) disclosed back in May that it had begun an investigation into financial improprieties involving several current and former employees. That led to an eye-popping side story about Dentsply’s former CFO, Jorge Gomez, who got fired one day into his new job as CFO of Moderna when Dentsply disclosed its investigation — but we digress. The news here is what Dentsply said in its latest quarterly report, filed on Monday.

First, management gave a summary of its investigation. In the company’s North America operations, the investigation concluded that several former executives, including the former CEO and the former CFO (Gomez, the one fired from Moderna) “did not maintain and promote an appropriate control environment focused on compliance in areas of the company’s business, nor did they sufficiently promote, monitor or enforce adherence to [Dentsply’s] Code of Ethics and Business Conduct.”

The investigation also concluded that executives in Dentsply’s China operations committed intentional wrongdoing by misleading the company’s local accounting teams, and then “lacking truthfulness” in providing information when Dentsply’s board launched its investigation.

That’s the investigation, anyway. Dentsply also restated results for the three- and nine-month periods ending Sept. 30, 2021; and for the entire fiscal year that ended on Dec. 31, 2021.

One could find those restated details by digging through Dentsply Sirona’s footnote disclosures — but who wants to do that? It’s painstaking and causes eyestrain. Calcbench devised a simpler way.

Looking for Revised Facts

To find restated financial disclosures, start by looking at the income statement (or balance sheet, as the case may be) using our Company-in-Detail page. Restated financial disclosures can be found using the “Highlight Revisions” tab on the right side of your screen.

For example, Figure 1, below, shows Dentsply Sirona’s disclosures after they have been restated, but before using our Highlight Revisions feature to see exactly what those restatements were. (We also circled the Highlight Revisions tab in blue.)

Figure 2, below, shows what happens when you do activate the Highlight Revisions tab. All line items that were revised are highlighted for easy follow-up.

That’s a lot of revised facts, but then, Dentsply had a rather far-reaching restatement. Other companies might revise only a few facts, and if a company doesn’t need to revise anything then the Highlight Revisions tab won’t work at all because there’s nothing to see.

You’ll also notice that every highlighted revision has a plus sign next to it. Click on that sign and a box will appear that explains the timing and the size of the revision. Figure 3, below, shows the result when we clicked on the net sales disclosure for Q3 2021.

As you can see from the box, Denstply originally reported $1.069 billion for the quarter back in November 2021. Now, after the investigation and restatement, that number has been cut to $1.04 billion.

Just another way that Calcbench tries to track all financial disclosures in the known universe, and then present them to you in an easy-to-use, easy-to-digest format. Much less painful than a root canal!

Tale of the Nine Tailed: Explanation of Lee Rang’s Death and Lee Yeon’s Ending Scene

Well folks...here we are once again. I did say that I would not write another TOTNT post unless there was anything worth discussing in the finale. I know many of you may feel utterly devastated or somewhat confused by how TOTNT ended, but I hope my post will be able to comfort you somehow. Anyways, let’s put on our thinking caps one last time for TOTNT!

Lee Rang’s Death

One of the biggest complaints many have had is the death of Lee Rang. Many said that the writer did him dirty while others wished that Lee Yeon and Ji Ah would’ve died instead. However, when we looked at his character arc’s as a whole, his death was justified. We mustn’t forget that he murdered hundreds possibly thousands in wake of his anger.

Yes, he did do some good towards the end of his life such as taking in Yuri and Kim Soo, but that shouldn’t discredit all the atrocious acts he had committed in the past. Saving the life of two people doesn’t make up for all of the lives he had taken. Additionally, it is noted that Lee Rang did also assist the Imoogi’s group to bring the Imoogi back to life which caused for a slew of horrible events to occur in the first place.

In the end, it was Lee Rang’s turn to sacrifice for the one he loved. Everything in TOTNT is cyclic if you think about it. First Ah Eum died to save Lee Yeon then Lee Yeon died to save Ji Ah. Therefore, it was only logical that it was Lee Rang’s turn to die for the one he loved which was Lee Yeon.

Everything in life isn’t all rainbows and sunshine, what matters is what you do despite being dealt a bad fate. Both Lee Yeon and Ah Eum/Ji Ah weren’t dealt with a particularly good fate, but yet they still remained good people. Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for Lee Rang. Yes, he was dealt with a bad fate with having been born with a mother who didn’t want him, but he was also lucky because he had been taken in by a brother who greatly cherished him. Instead of appreciating the time he shared with Lee Yeon and remaining a good person even after the events of Lee Yeon leaving for the Samcheon River, Lee Rang still decided to take a turn for the worst.

Over and over again, Lee Rang had escaped the punishment he so rightly deserved. For example, even after killing those villagers, Lee Yeon spared his life. Lee Rang had been basically living off on borrowed time. In a way, Lee Rang was lucky that during that borrowed time he was able to resolve the misunderstanding he had with Lee Yeon as well as have a small family of his own. Finally, if there’s anything TOTNT has taught us, it’s that if something is the will of the afterlife judges, it will be carried out eventually. One can’t escape their punishment.

In my opinion, things could have gone a lot worse for Lee Rang in the end. Meaning he could have been reborn as a shrimp. Instead, the afterlife judges granted him reincarnation as a boy who had a mother who cared for him and granted him his last wish which was to meet his brother again. He got all of wishes fulfilled. Thus, it was a satisfying ending for Lee Rang.

Update 12/07/2020: Does Lee Yeon Meeting Reincarnated Lee Rang Indicate Many Years Have Passed?

No, it doesn’t. The team probably wanted to use the same child actor (Joo Won Lee; DOB: 05/03/2011) as to imply that Lee Rang had been successfully reincarnated. Sure, they could’ve used someone who was a few months old, but how then would Lee Yeon recognize Lee Rang ? Remember that Lee Yeon only met Lee Rang when he was around 9 years old. There would be no way for Lee Yeon to recognize what a few months old Lee Rang could’ve looked like. Get it ? Again, Lee Yeon meeting reincarnated Lee Rang happened in 2021!

Why Does Lee Yeon Still Have His Gumiho Powers?

Initially, when I first watched this I was beyond shocked, left confused, and was rethinking my opinion of Lee Yeon as a good person. However, once I watched it with subs and then did a little research into how Gumihos can become human, the ending scene made sense. Again, everyone should’ve taken Jo Bo Ah’s advice of looking up myths and see to how they pertain to whatever happened in TOTNT.

Anyways, in legends, Gumihos can become human in the following ways:

1) Refrain from killing and eating humans for 1000 days

2) The human who found out a Gumiho’s true nature, must tell no one of its secret for 10 years

3) Over a period of 100 days (other versions say 1000 days or ~3 years), Kumiho must not be detected by the human they are married to. If the Gumiho fails on this quest, they will lose any chance of becoming human and will be a Gumiho for 1000 years

4) Gumiho must consume the livers of 1000 humans over 1000 years. If they do not do this by the end of 1000 years, the Gumiho will dissolve in foam/bubbles

In particular, the ending scenes was in reference to #3. When Lee Yeon had came back to life, he was still technically a Gumiho hence why he could enter the Office of the Afterlife. I know you might ask well why didn’t Taluipa or Shin Ju sense he was still a fox? Because at the same time Lee Yeon was human, but only during the day or nights when there wasn’t a full moon (read further below for an explanation). Additionally, Lee Yeon probably didn’t tell Shin Ju because he didn’t want there to be any possibility that information would get leaked to Ji Ah. Better safe than sorry was Lee Yeon’s personal philosophy!

Although, Lee Yeon did come pretty close to being discovered as a Gumiho when he let it slip that he knew that their child would be a daughter. This all goes back to the intro in Ep 1 where it is said that Gumihos have the “ability to see miles ahead”. Luckily for Lee Yeon, he convincingly tricked Ji Ah and played it off as he was just saying weird things.

Until his 100 days were up, Lee Yeon had to keep his Gumiho nature hidden from the only person who mattered which was Ji Ah. Let’s be honest here, it’s really hard to trick Ji Ah so Lee Yeon had to be super careful around her. Usually in legends, Gumihos fall short of reaching the 100 days because they are discovered by their betrothed. During Lee Yeon’s 3 months transitional phase of becoming human, a situation arose that could’ve have caused Ji Ah to discover that Lee Yeon was still a Gumiho aka Mr Samjae entering into Ji Ah’s life.

This caused a problem because whatever misfortune befell on Ji Ah it would also inadvertently affect Lee Yeon too. Meaning that if Lee Yeon didn’t get rid of the Samjae, it could cause Ji Ah the misfortune of finding out Lee Yeon still was a Gumiho, thus ruining his plan of ever becoming human.

The only way anyone could tell Lee Yeon was still a Gumiho was to have seen him during a full moon. This was in reference to how in legends, werewolves (also in the same canine family as a fox) can only undergo transformation into a wolf when there was a full moon (symbolistic of metamorphosis). So while in the transitional state of Gumiho and human, Lee Yeon was able to take advantage of there being a full moon to be able to transform into a Gumiho. Subsequently, Lee Yeon then used his Gumiho abilities to rid of Mr. Samjae Spirit. Thus, Lee Yeon eliminated a potential threat that could have caused Ji Ah to find out his Gumiho nature before the 3 months of remaining undetected was completed.

Flash forward approximately 3-4 years later after Lee Yeon’s face off with the Samjae, Lee Yeon is now seen as having been successful at becoming a full human as well as having daughter with Ji Ah as seen here in the following pictures (family picnic). My only complaint is that the production/editing team ended up deciding to not include the following scene. I do not know whether it was their decision or the writer’s to not include this. There could be numerous reasons why such as they had wanted to leave the possibility of there being a season 2 or there was limited time allotted for the length of ep 16 or the writer had wanted to leave an open ending. Whatever the reason, I do hope we will eventually show this to us. In doing so, they would give so many of us the proper closure we needed for TOTNT!

Side note, it looks like Lee Yeon and Ji Ah did end up introducing their daughter to her adoptive grandparents. Awww!

Updated 12/07/2020: Timeline of Samjae + Lee Yeon’s Transitional Period

There were also a bunch of questions concerning when exactly the whole scenes with Ji Ah and Lee Yeon had occurred. This occurred in 2021.

Samjae is believed to occur over a three-year period, and follows calculations based on the twelve zodiac signs. The first of the three years is known as deulsamjae (Kor. 들삼재, lit. entering the three calamities), the second, nuulsamjae (Kor. 누울삼재, lit. middle of calamities), and the third, nalsamjae (Kor. 날삼재, exiting the three calamities). The first year in this three-year cycle is supposed to be the most unfortunate.

So doing a little math, one will be able to see what years the Samjae entered (deulsamjae), remained (nuulsamjae), and then exited (nalsamjae). So the Samjae entered into Ji Ah’s life in 1994, 2003, 2012, and 2021. The cycle of every 9 years refers to the time period from one Deulsamjae year to the next (not every 9 years from her year of birth). For example, 1994 + 9 = 2003, 2003 + 9 = 2012, and 2012 + 9 = 2021.

What the show was trying to convey is that when Mr. Samjae came into Ji Ah’s life, it also coincided at the same time as Lee Yeon’s 3 months transitional period. Additionally, there were some who asked, “Aren't we to assume that many years have passed because Lee Yeon did say first root canal, first picnic, first snowfall, etc ?”. No, I took that scene as him mentioning things he either already did or will eventually experience.

Anyways, I really didn’t think I needed to point all of this out because I had assumed you all would’ve put on your thinking caps by now!

Last Remarks.

I hope that this post was able to resolve any confusion many of you may have had about the last episode. The writer did truly keep us on our toes until the very end. But with a little research into myths as well as analyzing everything as a whole, one should’ve been able to understand where the writer was coming from. Again, I want to give a big thanks to the cast, crew, and writer for all their hard work to give us TOTNT!

Reflecting

I can’t help but think now that we’re 5 weeks into this root canal of a break-up how utterly unromantic the relationship really was.

It was founded a long time crush on my part that was never reciprocated until I was emotionally present for her in a hard time. Then, we transitioned to LDR which she hated so much, that she couldn’t stand at all. So I visited in person and she visited in person, and then I stayed there. When she found out the dorms at the college she was likely to go to wouldn’t let her stay in the women’s it was a reminder that her home state wasn’t kind to people like us. I suggested she could come stay with me and my Mom, start working and eventually we could move out together. She would have a chance at the dorms here in Washington too. Without researching she jumped on the plan. When she found out that she needed a year of residency to make tuition affordable, she focused all of her attention on getting money for a car. Then getting us out of my Mom’s and into a studio apartment.

At this time, I was working part-time and going to school and shortly after our move the COVID-19 pandemic began. At first, things looked alright. My job went remote and her’s gave her two weeks paid time off. They created strict control over the situation, not letting customers into the store at all. But while I was working from home and doing zoom school, my ex started resenting me for the privilege of my situation. Resentment only grew, she hated I had support from my family that she lacked, she hated that I could work from home, she hated that I would spend days in our studio apartment focused on work and school and leisure and that for me all of those things were essentially confined to a desk. We spent two years in a studio apartment with resentment fermenting. I tried to be a good partner in every way that I knew how but the situation was already untenable by the time she shook me. Our sex life broke down.

We break up for the first time in July of 2021. I ask my friend to take me somewhere else, I negotiate my way into moving in. I regret not doing that now. I clutch a letter she wrote our first valentine’s day. One of three or four romantic gestures in our whole relationship. I was so starved for love and affection, her texting me asking if we were making a mistake, asking to see me made me crumble. I wanted to eat breakfast together and be okay. We agreed to reevaluate the relationship at the end of the lease. Our sex life never improves. The resentment is still there. But we’re happy to just go back to being comfortable. We can rely on each other. Everything works okay if we just trust each other. We really do love each other, even if we’re so mismatched, right? I tell myself it’s normal I have to fight her tooth and nail for her to tell me any reason she likes me.

We move again. We don’t move to the apartment I want, we move to the one she wants. Old fights flare up harder than ever. I try to address her needs so hard I break my arm. Stop being able to work on driving. She always wanted me to be driving. She leaves for home to see her family. Home is always not with me, I notice. My friend visits, she organizes a trip to Seattle with a third friend. When I go, this is the last straw. Sarah wanted to go to Seattle. We never made time. I’ve been working 40 hour weeks and so has she. We have shared as many days off as I can count on my hands. I didn’t plan a daytrip on any of them. This is the reason it ends. We fight and break up again.

She asks to go to couples therapy like my friend suggested months ago. I ask to think about it. My therapist reminds me this relationship has looked abusive to her for two years. I think about every time I had sex when I didn’t want to. I look at my body’s reaction to her, walking on eggshells, desperate for approval, afraid of her anger. I realize it has been too late for at least a year. It might have always been too late. I was a solution to a problem. My affection and desire were ego boosts. I bitterly think of her sucking the validation out of a man’s cock next time. I get upset with myself for the bitterness and anger that creeps in. I feel used and dirty. Everything hurts for a few weeks. We’re still living together. Ten Days left and I will never see her again. I don’t think I’m going to miss her.

You would think I walked under a ladder, or broke a mirror, or. Or something, I don’t know.

Idk how many people saw my last post (last week...or the week before, I genuinely have a terrible hold on time), where my car decided to give me the finger and not start, and I had to get it fixed for over a grand.

Well. More fun.

Wednesday I woke up in tremendous pain, from one of my teeth. Tremendous. It would fluctuate, I’d have a few okay minutes, but then it would feel like someone was punching me hard in the side of the head - my sinus, my ear, my eye, my entire skull, everything on the right side of my head was in pain. I tried to work, couldn’t, clocked out early & went to the dentist in town. “Oh you need a root canal.”

I don’t know if you remember the dental fiasco in the last year and a half, but let’s see if I can shorten it for you a bit (this all takes place between May 2021 and March 2022): Cracked tooth (named #3 apparently) -> dental tech broke the tooth during cleaning -> Dentist #1 did a filling on both tooth #2 and tooth #3 and said if it didn’t take, she’d do a root canal -> Dentist #1 informs us she DOESN’T DO ROOT CANALS and that’s what I now needed (tbh, that’s a whole shit show of its own) & she would only send my xrays to the endodontist she referred me to (which wasn’t covered by my insurance - there is exactly 1 endodontist in a 2 hour radius on my insurance) so I had to fight her to print them -> went to Dentist #2 for an exam, scheduled me to see their in-office endo (the guy on my insurance) -> root canal done -> crown was made, but first appointment for it to be put in was pushed back (WHILE I WAS DRIVING THERE) bc they didn’t get it back like they planned -> crown didn’t fit, had to be redone -> crown was put on, but after a week I was still in pain -> went back, had an infection, root canal FAILED had to have it done again -> had to have the crown redone as well -> repeat -> more pain, still infected -> endodontist drills it out (after insisting there’s nothing on the xray) and cleans out the infection that IS there, and seals up the tooth, no new crown. By the time it was over, he was legitimately dismissing any concerns I had about the pain - I repeatedly told him, I don’t know why, but I’m still in pain, despite the root canal & antibiotics, etc etc, and he dismissed me, didn’t really have much interest in finding out why.

Back to now. The Dentist here in town (Dentist #3), very nice guy. Looks at the new xray, looks in my mouth, and tells me that my root canal (the fiasco) is actually fine. its the tooth next to it. #2. The other one Dentist #1 filled. They refer me to their endodontist, though assure me I can take their referral to any endo if theirs isn’t covered. Of course their endo isn’t covered - remember how I said there’s only 1 endo in a 2 hour radius that my insurance covers? Same guy who dismissed my pain for the last year. There’s no way in hell I’ll ever go back to someone who doesn’t care that I’m in pain (or someone who flirts with the nurses while his hands are in my mouth, but, also, another day, another story). But there’s also no way I can afford to pay for a root canal out of pocket to see the referred endo, or risk going through a year of visits if the root canal fails again. (And honestly? I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of those repeat visits were because of tooth #2, not the original root canal - but like I said, he - and the other dentist I saw there - dismissed my concerns and didn’t try to figure out why I was still in pain.)

So Friday I went back in. I said fuck it. It’s the back molar. I don’t have any teeth behind it. It’s in bad shape anyway. Fuck it. Take the tooth out. It’s cheaper, it’s faster. Take it. He tried to talk me into doing the root canal (”the structure is sound”, “do you want me to try the root canal?”), but I’m so tired of dental shit. I thanked him and said no and he pulled the tooth. (I already feel better.)

BUT WAIT. THERE’S MORE.

I drove to the store today. Grocery store, maybe 15 minutes maximum of a drive from my house. No problems. Went to get medications for my folks. Driving home. Halfway back. Error pops up on my dashboard - something about the battery service system. I have no clue what that is, but the battery light was also on. I slowed down (I was on a back road near a stop sign & an old folks home, I wasn’t going fast to begin with.) And then I noticed it was getting hot in the car (its south Texas), so I checked the AC temp knob, which is as low as it gets, and my dash popped up a message about AC being turned off bc the engine was too hot. And then, I got the last message, ENGINE OVERHEATED- IDLE ENGINE.

Never, ever saw that message before. Never. I’ve replaced the water pump in this car twice (about 5 years ago, in the span of a year).

You ever have an absolute emotional breakdown in South Texas sitting in your overheated car on the side of the road trying to focus and figure out what to do? Not fun.

I called the folks. My stepdad drove over, followed me with his hazards on while I limped the car to the mechanics - it’s usually maybe a 2 minute drive from where I had stopped the car, took us about fifteen to get it back, I had to keep stopping & turning it off so it could cool down.

Shop doesn’t open til tomorrow. Won’t know what the problem is until after they do. I’m hoping it’s just a thermostat. The coolant tank was full, I opened the engine to look (not that I know much of what I’m looking at tbh).

I don’t know what I did to have this all hit me in less than a month. It’s fucking bullshit, is what it is. I’m so fucking angry, I needed to vent this out but fucking hell, I have no idea what to do if it’s more serious than the thermostat, because I can’t afford another car, I can’t afford a goddamn thing.

Okay. Venting. Ranting. Over.

While the Scorpio full moon we just experienced along with Pluto retrograde would continue to bring things up from below the surface that need to be handled, faced and healed, we would start now working on the future. May would have not just a new moon in Taurus, giving us a fresh boost of self worth and net worth so we can start building our new life on firm grounds, we would also have three fated encounters on 10th, 17th and 31st May which will bring more clarity to our life path which would unfold further with the eclipses we are about to experience end May and June. We will dig deeper into all of this today and then in part 2 delve deeper into May themes by sign.

Right at the onset of May on May Day we have Sun and Uranus making a surprising contact at the very degree we would have solar eclipse - fated new start in April of 2022. The shifts we are bringing this month especially in first half of the month have structural implications on what we are going to grow in 2022 financially and physically. We are taking those first steps of making a change in our life which underlines financial independence, shift in our values and shift in how we create value. Even shift in what we perceive to be stable and what we perceive to be gainful and beautiful. The definition of abundance is being changed and as our values shift so does our external reality. In the same vein definition of love and creativity is being progressively changed as the way we choose changes. The things we did before which seemed to form the structural part of our world, now do not seem to be inline with our new values. Uranus is a trigger which would show us a stale situation which needs changing and its been trying to do so since 2019. Now its entered its second decan, the Virgo dominant decan where we now do something useful and practical to make those changes. It also comes with more flexibility versus the initial rigidity to change we might have experienced.

There is an inner separation from our own old inauthentic identity or even father figure as a new discovery of our unique identity begins.

At 10º41 Taurus we create a new ego, its almost the old identity has been eliminated, weeds are being eliminated one by one and a new self is being born. “As the roots, so the flowers” said Rudhyar of this degree. We are ready for a new bloom and we would become ego attached to a new identity, such is human nature. We would nurture it, water it, love it and expect the world from it. This is the period of “Cultivation”. We must use May for nurturing and cultivation of our new roots. Which would culminate in the full flower supermoon on 26th May which is a lunar eclipse this month - closest full moon of this year.

Remember this is part of our chart where once we make home, we tend to live longer.

So whatever new source of income or new assets or personal resources or investments or heart choices you are cultivating remember you are laying down grounds for the long haul. It would feel that its not going at the speed you want, especially financial aspect of it. Words would be flowing fast, ideas and even documents may be going but that solid growth and ground might look slow. That’s a topic of 2022 when North node comes in Taurus and accelerates that element.

This is a preview period and we will see growth in faith, spirituality, compassion and idealism. We last had this transit in 2010. So you can review what shifted for you in Jan 2010 when Jupiter last just entered Pisces. This preview would also show us the growth we would fully experience in 2022, as well as some over the board optimism or even misleading or inflated expectations. I have put the brief of my previous note on the 2022 Jupiter Neptune cycle at the bottom of this note for your reference. We are more open to choices but all choices aren’t lucrative, this might be a good season to lay some good ground rules. But overall this is a very expansionary transit and Jupiter works very well in Pisces so expansion and growth is greatly supported. This transit especially sprouts creative geniuses.

Contracts, agreements, discussions agreed past 14th May might need some revision as Mercury would go retrograde after 29th May. Fated encounter need a bit more time to be fully understood and messaging of them may not be clear at the onset. We might in early June take a bit of step back to make sense of it all. This would also be supported by Saturn going retrograde, there might be structural changes required in our plans, getting some boundaries and rules right to make what we are initiating is more abundant. After 23rd May till 10 Oct there might be structural reworks which would be needed in our vision and plans to make them more resilient. It will also be the time to evaluate where healthy boundaries need to be built with friend, our network and sibling.

𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝗵𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀

Each of the fated encounters of 10th May, 17th May and 31st May come with the Saturn trine giving us discipline to make the structural changes I just spoke of. It’s the pie in the sky thoughts, ideas and discussions we had in March and April are now being given substance. These dates and a day before / after give great opportunities to have a productive talk with authorities, progress on approvals and guidance from an elder or experienced person. These are the “rising to the occasion” contacts - these are unexperienced grounds of potential. After 10th of May and especially 17th of May you would truly feel yourself free from the past and moving into this unchartered territory we are about to chart together. Stay flexible, open and present as it would require us to leave our old life belief system behind as south node asks us to release our beliefs and replace them with new information.

All of these fated encounter come in close contact with one of the great stars in the sky, one of the four Royal stars of Persia, the Archangel star (Michael), the Watcher in the East, called Aldebaran. Contact with this star has promise of success or happiness but it comes with a test of integrity. We would be faced with an issue of integrity and would have to rise to the occasion. A very famous example is of Edward VIII who fell in love with a divorce and even though the most logical & traditional choice would have been to compromise his integrity he abdicated the throne to marry the woman he loved. We would have to live by the morals even though the temptation to not follow them would be high. Galileo Galilei rebelled against the church announcing that Earth was the one that orbited around the Sun at the risk of being arrested & imprisoned. We would have to rise up for our truth as we encounter some moral dilemma.

Mars met this start on 26th March with influence across end of March - did you had to take a high road on a subject which was tempting ? Were you prompted in some way to change your course to take the road less travelled yet the one thats morally and spiritually more in line with you ? Well I have my natal Venus on Aldebaran so I was. If it was the case for you, you would see more progress, more information on that choice you are making.

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀𝗲𝘀

As we go towards the month end, I do believe activation of this star which has Mars like equalities, we could see our world leaders encounter this very moral dilemma. When Mars met north node in Gemini last in March Biden had called Putin the “murderer” and ofcourse Ever Given went on giving stuck in the Suez Canal. It was also the deadliest days in Myanmar protests. This all coupled with the eclipses, Saturn standing still and Saturn square Uranus becoming exact in June, makes for an intense month end and summer.

Communication would be charged up, transportation a bit haywire as people try to speed and we would want to go hundred miles a minute in our mind, hands and voice. Use your words wisely and its a great opportunity to make once in 19 years progress on our written, creative, verbal, communication, commercial projects and skills.

Due to the eclipse of the month end on 26th May with south node and its history, I do not recommend to travel or be engaged in religious group activities which can lead to crowds. You always have to use your own judgement in whats best for you but astrologically this eclipse comes with a travel or religious incident.

As Saturn would go retrograde on 23rd of May and square Uranus for a second time on 14th June, the Saturn in Aquarius and Saturn square Uranus themes of breakthrough, rebellion, regulations on innovation especially tech become stronger as we approach June. More regulations would be drafted over this period of Saturn strength especially covering innovations in financial system such as digital currency, stock market, investments, land use and at some point food innovation.

This cycle has deep implications for change in religion and spirituality. Also on weather patterns especially linked to floods, hurricanes - the Last Island Hurricane in US which destroyed Last Island was part of last cycle as was a massive church explosion. This was also first year when the Third Party in US called “Know nothing American Party” fought elections. Seeds of American civil war were grown in this cycle as well back in 1856. “

Water Matters

We turned on the spigot. A trickle. Seconds later, nothing.

For over a hundred years the deep well had served three houses, several barns, and all the gardens on our Napa County ranch without a problem. This summer, the well is empty. The bucolic lake built by my Dad and brothers in the former horse pasture served as a family playground, fishing area, and farm irrigation reservoir for decades. In 2021, it is a big basin of cracked clay. There is no water.

In the San Joaquin Valley, an area known to be the breadbasket of fruit and nuts for America, the aquifers and canals are depleted. It is projected that by 2040, 535,000 acres of agricultural production will be lost. If the drought persists and water is not available, double that amount of land will not be planted resulting in food shortages around the country.

Seventy-one percent of the earth is covered in water. Over 96 percent of that water is saline, represented by our oceans and seas. The human body consists of sixty percent water. H2O is a vital nutrient to the life of every cell. People can survive without food for several days, but without water, organ failure commences around the third day of dehydration.

Water matters and water is scarce. Climate change is resulting in rising temperatures and when the soil gets warmer, heat waves worsen. Fifty-five percent of the West is experiencing extreme drought conditions. Some scientists have declared the summer of 2021 the worst drought in over 1200 years.

What is a gardener to do?

Because of the efforts to reduce water usage as well as the higher costs of water, many people have asked me if it would be best to “let their landscape go”. My rapid reaction is a decisive “NO!” Besides the financial burden of relandscaping, maintaining a garden during a drought is essential not only for the aesthetics and beauty a garden provides but for keeping your home cooler and contributing to a fire safety zone. If you let your plants and trees die, your parched landscape could become a fire hazard.

Here are ways to minimize watering while keeping your plants alive.

1. Weed your garden thoroughly as weeds are huge drinkers.

2. Mulch to conserve water. Add three inches of good quality mulch to your entire landscape to suffocate weed growth, conserve water, prevent evaporation, and reduce the heat to the soil.

3. Check for leaks in your sprinkler system. If you find a spike in your water bill, you probably have a broken pipe somewhere.

4. Water deeply and infrequently. Once or twice a week will suffice. Most plants need about one inch of water weekly. Check your soil to make sure that the water is penetrating the soil. Dry soil sheds water as run-off. If this happens, water twice, five minutes apart until the soil is saturated. Deep watering encourages a healthy root system while frequent short showers are wasteful and not beneficial to plant growth.

5. Water early in the morning or early evening when moisture will be retained.

6. Refrain from fertilizing in the summer months as feeding promotes thirsty hyper-growth.

7. Mow your lawns without using the bag. Grass clippings supply nutrients to the lawn with less water usage.

8. Don’t worry about keeping your lawn super-green. Just keep it alive and it will re-green when the weather is wetter.

9. Use soaker hoses around plants to eliminate evaporation. Trees can be especially vulnerable during a drought. Use a deep soaker wand to supply water to the roots.

10. Don’t put your irrigation on a schedule. Instead, check your soil moisture and monitor your plants. Turn your system on when it is necessary but do make sure to run it to keep the system free of invading insects, roots, and stagnant water.

For both firewise and waterwise gardening, permeable surfaces in your hardscape such as decomposed granite, gravel, stones, and mulch are advisable. They provide a fire-safe zone and allow rainwater to percolate into the soil without runoff. 11. Summer is not the time to plant but to plan. Any specimen planted in August will require regular and concentrated watering to establish strong roots. Late fall before frosts will be optimal for sowing.

12. Recycle your household water. Keep a bucket in your shower and bowls in your sinks to catch the water from your faucet. Use it on your houseplants or pour it into your garden. When you steam or boil vegetables, allow the water to cool, then use it on your plants.

13. Minimize your personal water usage. Turn off the water when brushing teeth or when soaping up in the shower. For toilets, we may be approaching the former drought mantra “if it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down.” This is obviously a personal choice.

14. Adjust your expectations for your garden. Accept the fact that your garden may not be as green, lush, and colorful as it would normally be if water scarcity was not an issue. Plants wilt to conserve energy. Many plants are resilient and can deal with hot weather. They will bounce back with winter rains.

During the past two months, I have been busy personally repairing broken PVC pipes, valves, sprinklers, and hoses as hiring anyone to assist has been impossible. Between the marauding deer, shifting soils, and invading roots, the work is endless, arduous, intensive, and necessary. I have also implemented the tips that I am suggesting.

Taking a long, relaxing shower used to be my reward after a day of digging, weeding, pruning, repairing, building, and planting, but for the past few years I’ve resorted to three-minute scrubs to save water.

Living in Lamorinda, we are fortunate to be able to turn on our faucets and have water. Farmers throughout the state are not so lucky. Continue to grow edibles as growing your own groceries will become more critical as the drought continues.

As for now, on our family ranch and vineyards we are buying water. Last year’s grape harvest was 100% destroyed by smoke taint. Because of the three-digit temperatures experienced thus far, we have already lost 20% of our Cabernet. I pray for a winter of maximum snowfall.

Water is life. It’s precious. Don’t waste, conserve.
