Fun fact I used to consume a lot of Land of the Lustrous stuff.

Anyways this is one of my many Land of the Lustrous OCs, Vivianite. Mohs hardness of 1.5, dark green/blue in colour, and very old. Due to the nature of his weak composition, Vivianite can't actually do much of anything, and has had to live under very specific conditions.

Vivianite wears a tight full body uniform to hold any chipped pieces in place, and is kept in a box stuffed with loose cloth to ensure minimal damage. If he comes into contact with light, he begins to oxidize and darken, so he's kept in a windowless room with curtains over the entrance.

That's all to say he's isolated and bored. He spends much of his time inactive, but he'll jump at the opportunity for conversation if there's someone around. Certain gems visit him to chat, get guidance, or give him the recent news. A task given to some gems is to clear his room of dust, and maybe bring him some books if he's up for it.

Vivian sees himself as an older sibling/friend to many of the other gems, and as such he's very keen on providing a listening ear and giving advice where possible to those who need it. He's essentially emotional support in a can.

Other notes/details:

not all gems know Vivian exists! He's hidden away so most gems wouldn't see him unless they were actively looking for him. A lot of the older ones know about him, but the younger ones don't

Rutile is endlessly tired of having to glue him back together so often due to his softness, which is part of why he has a tighter uniform to keep all his broken pieces in place

Vivian struggles with walking, he tends to be slow and stumbly

the tanks in Vivian's room are for jellyfish. Gems who are sent to clean his room have to switch out the jellyfish too. They're there to provide a faint light source so he doesn't go completely inactive

Vivian, despite living in a box in the dark, has a lot of technical knowledge about things as a result of millennia of going through the library collection. He' a living encyclopedia and can usually offer some answers if a gem has questions on a particular subject

his internal structure is basically a lot of shards stuck together like fibers, so he does minor repairs on himself by affixing strands of his hair into empty spots. He's had his fingers repaired and replaced this way often

In the few instances where Vivian has gone outside, he has an abnormally high amount of energy as a result of his inclusions being able to work at full capacity in the light

aw thank you sm! as for the lines i just zoom in the canvas and work that way lol. i use a pretty small brush too (like 3 px usually) but i also make sure the line sizes aren't the same throughout the piece..!! i usually fluctuate between 3px - 6 px but it depends on the piece n how im feeling

like line thickness rlly helps making the lineart look smooth and dynamic imo and i usually put thicker lines on the parts that are in front/parts i want to emphasize (like in that thalia portrait, the lines are thicker on the chin, nose bridge, her jaw shape, the fringe pieces since it sits on top of the face etc.) and i use thinner lines to for the details. i find parallel lines also gives the illusion that something is smoother/neater that's why in my hair lineart or in clothing , i usually add a thinner line right next to the main piece (like the collar/seams, embroidery, etc.) since it makes it look more 'structured' if that makes sense

PUQI SHRINE CAFE EXPERIENCE!

This event went above and beyond my expectations! The hosts were entertaining, the games were immersive and fun, the stamp rally was super silly, and the food was great!

I was lucky enough to secure a spot and enjoy the experience with my best friend, @meeyeahdoodles. We both agreed that the atmosphere was welcoming and friendly, making the experience fantastical! The hard work and love of the staff, hosts, and organizers was clear through everything they put together.

And, my gosh, the artists who made the merch and sold their own at Artist Alley were SO TALENTED! The variety was just right and if we hadn’t controlled ourselves we definitely would have bought so much more!!

MeeYeah and I had so much fun together and I cannot recommend events made by @/tgcfcafe (on Instagram) enough!!

I'm 99% sure you have look at most painting of Napoleon, so I need to ask you this question.

Is it just me is does it seem like a third of all painting of Napolean have one of his hands in his waist coat? I swear there is so many pictures with that pose that I can't stop noticing it. I can't think of a reason why that would be other than artist avoiding drawing hands.

Helloooo! Very interesting question! To quote wikipedia:

The hand-in-waistcoat (also referred to as hand-inside-vest, hand-in-jacket, hand-held-in, or hidden hand) is a gesture commonly found in portraiture during the 18th and 19th centuries. The pose appeared by the 1750s to indicate leadership in a calm and firm manner. The pose is most often associated with Napoleon Bonaparte due to its use in several portraits made by his artist, Jacques-Louis David, amongst them the 1812 painting Napoleon in His Study.

I think Napoleon paintings are very funny bcs he really hated sitting for portraits, so a lot, if not basically most, of his portraits are kinda just the artist's best possible representation. And particularly paintings like "Napoleon Crossing the Alps" is more of like the ideal/image of Napoleon, rather than being super accurate. And I think this hand in the waistcoat pose just became an easy way to characterize him in paintings, if that makes sense? Like of course other historical figures have done that same pose, but when you see it, doesn't it evoke Napoleon in your head?

But I definitely agree with you on the "avoiding drawing hands" part 😭 I actually kinda like drawing hands but 1. They're difficult to draw correctly, and 2. They're difficult to pose. I struggle irl on where to put my hands if I'm standing still, so think about that in the context of painting. It's very hard to avoid it feeling stiff or awkward, right? So oftentimes it's nice to put one of the hands in the pocket and the other resting or pointing or something, otherwise it's very difficult, at least imo.

I talked about it at some point, but I was kinda confused at why so many paintings of Philip V have him pointing, either in the distance or upwards. And sure, you can try to interpret some deeper meaning. But I think a lot of it comes down to "ah man, idk what to do with his hand, I guess I'll make him point."

Tl;dr: Half of it is to symbolically represent his calm yet firm sense of leadership as well as to easily characterize him, so as soon as you see that pose it immediately evokes "Napoleon Bonaparte." The other half is that it's an easy solution to both not having to draw another hand but also avoid the pose looking stiff :D

I think that gets to the heart of what I've been thinking about, that bittersweetness, because despite his best efforts... of course he could never end up anything like Yoko, but he still ended up with an abusive "household." Because in addition to Masato ending up how he did, he has to see those same situations play out, feel that same tension in the air between Jo and Ichi, over and over for almost a decade straight.

Like, in a way, he's forced to put himself in Toshio's shoes when that happens. He can't really get through to Jo, in the same way Toshio can't get through to Yoko, but he can try to step in before lasting damage is done, and he can try to make it bearable for his son. You know. Have a nice talk. Treat him to Peking duck. I'm SO normal about the (drawn-out) parallels of those scenes

So then with Jo... he kind of does become his father, even if he never wanted to (no one wants to), both through his ruinous neglect of Masato at birth and through how he comes to look at discipline and corporal punishment. I'm sure it's not lost on him in Masato's case (owww), but with Ichi, it's not like he has any reason to see him as his son... But How Far Can That Take You.

Because it's like, at the start, he was openly beating Ichi in front of Arakawa and not letting up much when Arakawa intervened. But then you have The Yubitsume Scene and Arakawa walking in on All That and... he looks sorry. Sorry for being caught, probably, but sorry nonetheless. Like... what changed between then and now... have you two had a Heartfelt Conversation... do you know where Arakawa got that scar... are you unable to change your "nature" even then...

Side note bro your SHOE is the size of his TORSO I promise you do not need to kick him with all the strength you've got like what the hell is this 😭😭😭

BUT ALL THAT ASIDE thank you so much for delving into the symbolism! Wonderful read. I don't really have an eye for symbolism, so that makes it all the more enjoyable to revisit the comic and everything with what you've gone into. I think a lot of your experiences resonate with mine, so conversely I'm not sure what others would take away from it, BUT I think there's enough there that's so insightful and evocative that it's effective without personal experience. I don't think there's anything I could add, so. Yeah. For once I am happy to sit back and take it all in... On that note, definitely looking forward to your next comic!

that's literally it though. like no extra notes. except The Obligatory Few i dont think it was an accident that arakawa is set up as the beginning of the game's 'protagonist' and planting that 'troubled family' taste first thing in our mind. i remember how i felt when i first saw arakawa walk in on jo and ichi and then arakawa taking ichi out for dinner i was just like🧍‍♂️Girl No The Cycle.... You're Your Father's Son....

and youre right: jo doesn't have an implicit reason to see how he treats ichi is wrong, hence he similarly doesnt have any reason to stop- not unless arakawa intervenes of course (and i will stand outside my window thinking of the possibility arakawa ever did try to have A Conversation with jo... arms folded behind my back and all like Man™️....)
