2024 reads / storygraph
The Principle of Moments
start of a scifi space opera series
a teen girl in the far future where humans are oppressed learns she has a destiny & a lost sister and escapes
and a young time traveler who’s given up trying to find his father through time, and is about to settle in 1812 with the prince he loves, but is unwillingly thrust into the future
they both learn their fates are entangled by a prophecy, and have to race across the galaxy, followed by a galactic emperor and the legacy of heroes from an ancient religion
#The Principle of Moments#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#this started off pretty good - interesting characters and worldbuilding; easy to read#but it felt like a bit too much was going on and I kinda checked out from the last third and didn’t care anymore.#It felt very much like the plot was just happening to the characters and they didn’t have much effect on it all.#It’s very classic space opera chosen one story! it’s fun and ambitious! a lot of doctor who vibes -#but also like if you tried to fit the entirety of timelord lore into one or two episodes haha.#It also had a couple classic space opera pitfalls.. like how this evil alien race was described as looking evil (in various ways). hm.#I actually really loved the writing style of the excerpt snippets in the beginning and would have been keen for most of it to be like that.#but also probably with the book being shorter.#there’s humor thrown in there that was sometimes funny but also sometimes awkward.#The time travelers speak very modern (despite none of it being set in the present) which like - obviously anachronism is gonna be inherent#to time travelers but sometimes it felt awkward. or like.. the other characters didn’t comment on it?#There were a couple moments that felt like a tv script gag that just came across badly on the page#gay prince romance was cute but kinda was thrown in the deep end then it’s barely relevant for most of the story.#The whole london subplot felt unneccesary. The random romance subplot the girl gets felt out of nowhere.#anyway it's decent! just fell apart a bit and didn't live up to my expectations

I keep seeing criticisms of poor modern interpretations of Shadow as "Vegeta Shadow" and it's confusing because.... which Vegeta are y'all talking about here? You've seen DBZ or Super, right??
Vegeta was overly aggressive and a downright villain up until the Cell saga and partially the Buu Saga. His character arc led to becoming a family man, a friend and fellow protector of Earth. Shadow's initial concept was always meant to be the Vegeta to Sonic's Goku, it's in his original concept art sketch notes. Take Vegeta's arc as a whole and it fits Shadow's pretty neatly from antagonistic enemy -> aggressive rival -> well-adjusted, even friendly equal.
When Shadow's antagonistic with Sonic and co, it's usually because he's on a mission and perceives them as in his way, like his battle against Knuckles in Rivals.
But most of the times after 06, in Rivals, Generations, Forces, TSR, the TSR animations or Sonic Channel's short stories, he's often dismissive, maybe even abrasive, but not an ego-driven jerk. Sonic does agitate and annoy him, just not enough to the point he'll attack for that reason alone. He'd usually just prefer running off if he's ticked off enough. Unless there's a need to start a fight, he won't and is pretty composed otherwise. In fact, Shadow's good-natured enough that when Sonic's challenging him to a fun race or suggests they work together, he's willing to take him up on it without much arguing.
Are people mixing up their criticisms of Boom Shadow with Game Shadow? Because criticizing HIM for being a quarter-inch deep Pre-Cell Vegeta makes more sense but he's barely related to Game Shadow. Boom Shadow doesn't even HAVE a tragic backstory in the context of that series. He's just a brooding weirdo who lives alone in dank caves and has zero reason on why he's like that.
Anyway, I think calling poor portrayals "Vegeta Shadow" is a misnomer and missing the root of the problem. If they are trying to make him like Vegeta, seems they're only going off very early-Vegeta. It's most likely short-sighted writers only referencing SA2 to ShTH Shadow believing that's his entire character arc, ignoring Battle, 06 or anything else after that. :/

Any judgement on (Richard III)’s reign has to be seen as provisional. The critic of the reign only has to consider how the Tudors would now be regarded if Henry VII lost at Stoke, to realize the dangers of too many assumptions about the intractability of Richard’s problems. But it would be equally unrealistic to ignore Richard’s unpopularity altogether. The fact that he generated opposition among men with little material reason for dissent, and that the disaffection then continued to spread among his own associates, says something about what contemporaries regarded as the acceptable parameters of political behaviour. There is no doubt that Richard’s deposition of his nephews was profoundly shocking. To anyone who did not accept the pre-contract story, which was probably the majority of observers, the usurpation was an act of disloyalty. Gloucester, both as uncle and protector, was bound to uphold his nephew’s interests and his failure to do so was dishonourable. Of all medieval depositions, it was the only one which, with whatever justification, could most easily be seen as an act of naked self-aggrandizement.
It was also the first pre-emptive deposition in English history. This raised enormous problems. Deposition was always a last resort, even when it could be justified by the manifest failings of a corrupt or ineffective regime. How could one sanction its use as a first resort, to remove a king who had not only not done [nothing] wrong but had not yet done anything at all?
-Rosemary Horrox, Richard III: A Study of Service
#richard iii#my post#english history#Imo this is what really stands out to me the most about Richard's usurpation#By all accounts and precedents he really shouldn't have had a problem establishing himself as King#He was the de-facto King from the beginning (the king he usurped was done away with and in any case hadn't even ruled);#He was already well-known and respected in the Yorkist establishment (ie: he wasn't an 'outsider' or 'rival' or from another family branch)#and there was no question of 'ins VS outs' in the beginning of his reign because he initially offered to preserve the offices and positions#for almost all his brother's servants and councilors - merely with himself as their King instead#Richard himself doesn't seem to have actually expected any opposition to his rule and he was probably right in this expectation#Generally speaking the nobility and gentry were prepared to accept the de-facto king out of pragmatism and stability if nothing else#You see it pretty clearly in Henry VII's reign and Edward IV's reign (especially his second reign once the king he usurped was finally#done away with and he finally became the de-facto king in his own right)#I'm sure there were people who disliked both Edward and Henry for usurpations but that hardly matters -#their acceptance was pragmatic not personal#That's what makes the level of opposition to Richard so striking and startling#It came from the very people who should have by all accounts accepted his rule however resigned or hateful that acceptance was#But they instead turned decisively against him and were so opposed to his rule that they were prepared to support an exiled and obscure*#Lancastrian claimant who could offer them no manifest advantage rather than give up opposition when they believed the Princes were dead#It's like Horrox says -#The real question isn't why Richard lost at Bosworth; its why Richard had to face an army at all - an army that was *Yorkist* in motivation#He divided his own dynasty and that is THE defining aspect of his usurpation and his reign. Discussions on him are worthless without it#It really puts a question on what would have happened had he won Bosworth. I think he had a decent chance of success but at the same time#Pretenders would've turned up and they would have been far more dangerous with far more internal support than they had been for Henry#Again - this is what makes his usurpation so fascinating to me. I genuinely do find him interesting as a historical figure in some ways#But his fans instead fixate on a fictional version of him they've constructed in their heads instead#(*obscure from a practical perspective not a dynastic one)#queue

Rinzler is done & ready to take on the world!!! :D
This was all very much so a test in accepting imperfections as they are & just having fun creating something from scratch without instructions or help.
Anyways, I've only made one identity disc for him so far [& thanks to the magic of velcro] that can attach to his back & at his hands heheheh

Cat for scale with his ridiculous Rinz-wear♡ I might make more silly things for him, but for now, he's looking fabulous lol
[Also, he has velcro at his neck so I can optionally make an unmasked head for him as well heheheh]

Guess I thought the best way to combat burnout was to do a mildly ambitious star wars illustration!! Also known as, these kids stole a fucking speeder!
During their padawan days, Brea and Anakin were huge troublemakers. Most (if not all) of the time it's Brea pushing him to break rules because she thinks he cares too much what the council thinks of him. It sort of goes too far when she convinces him to hotwire a speeder and take it out on a joyride through Coruscant, which is fun until they get roped into a drag race that ends up putting them in danger. Their masters end up having to save their necks and they get into the MOST trouble they've ever been in, leading the two to fall out of touch and for Brea to buckle down and take her training WAY more seriously. The two eventually do reconnect after the battle of Geonosis, and their friendship comes back stronger than ever!
