i just overheard a guy at my work who claims to be a writer talking about fucking AI and how its helping him so artworks for his "novels" and how he gets all his inspiration from video games and everyone who was listening to his pseudo intellectual bullshit was like "wowww thats so smart! you must get so much writing done like that!" like yeah if all your ideas are taken from elsewhere and you dont pur effort into building characters im sure its very easy to churn out bullshit on a regular basis

but thats not the part that really pisses me off. what REALLY gets to me is that this guy OFFERED TO CRITIQUE MY FUCKING WRITING. and i did send him a sample! and his critique was SHIT!!!!!!! there was like maybe two valid comments (using certain words too much, paragraph breaks) but the rest was just him NOT READING THE FUCKING STORY.

at the end (which by the way i need to mention that i emailed him a pdf of a draft chapter which he printed off, marked in pen like a teacher, then scanned back to me) he had all these questions which, if he had a brain, he would know didnt make any fucking sense .

"how is Owen running in the woods with a long skirt on without tripping?" well, dickhead, earlier in the chapter i actually described how hes wearing trousers now!! it's actually really important that hes wearing trousers because theyre Melody's son's clothes!!! and that's important!!!! ALSO, even when he was wearing a skirt, i described it as SHORT. not long. ALSO ALSO, you can totally run in long skirts. yes even in forests.

he asked me why i didnt show Owen's "anger" more when he "decided" to shoot his father.............. he was scared and pulled the trigger by mistake because his father's yell made him flinch. he was never angry at any point in the whole 2000 words i sent you. he didnt even want to shoot the fucking gun.

at first i thought this might have been my fault for not making character intention clear enoufh in my writing but every other person i sent it to got it immediately and didnt ask the same stupid questions. so.

his other criticism was that Owen's dad wasnt homophobic enough. which i wasnt even going to comment on because what the fuck????

Mona : He thinks hes cute because he looks like a cute cat and sergio likes cute things and cats. Thinks he is charming. Tries to treat him like any other person despite how adorabubble he is. He starts thinking of him as his big brother naturally later on, he really trusts him and tells him things he doesnt tell anyone else, asks him for advice on his problems and thoughts and yeah really values his opinions.

Ann: He figured she was a Loud girl at first without even talking to her, he doesnt have a neutral opinion on women in general tbh so bad start, but as soon as they became friends and he heard her talk about what happened and how angry and frustrated she was he was like.. woaghhhh. no way.

Sergio has historically never been good at talking/making friends with girls or has had much of an interest in doing so, he mostly avoided them, so idk it seems stupid but he was like... woag. At first Sergio in his mind is like. WELL ANN is cool because SHES NOT LIKE THE OTHER GIRLS nope shes COOL AND REAL unlike the Other GIRLS (sergio turn around) BSDDVJBJFVJ. dont worry he figures it out later.

Anywho he thinks shes awesome and so nice to him and he admires how dedicated she is and how she tries to be upbeat but does worry about her and encourages her to break things if angry. Goes on her shopping trips even if he actually hates shopping because he loves Ann. Is encouraging about the things Ann wants to do but still tells her when theyre a bit silly (like in her social link where she sets impossible things to do hahah). Likes talking about more emotional things with her because he feels embarassed to talk about those things with the Boys (sergio turn around again)

Ryuji: Thought he was a bit strange, annoying at first. Just barging in and making him get involved in weird shit. But like with Ann he starts talking to him and they become buddies because they encourage their silly activities. He feels angry for ryuji and what happened to him; he thinks he should kill everyone in the track team actually/j .

Likes spending time with him, he appreciates that ryuji seems to understand him and likes to have fun with him running and excercising and playing videogames etcc. Bro bonding. They do mischievious activities together.

hes so fun to be around and sergio loves how hes such a kind person despite everything : ). They make stupid jokes together. Ryuji stops sergio from killing people sometimes. See, Sergio is like a Bro Character but hes the leader and also he has poor impulse control and is very angry.

Yusuke: He adores Yusuke he thinks hes so talented and everything he does is literally a masterpiece (hes right)

At first yusuke came off as a bit strange and aloof, but sergio was an instant fan as soon as he saw his work LOL. Yusuke appreciates the support. Sergio really admires and respects yusuke, even when he does “weird” things its like. Well its yusuke so. Yusuke = cool, then thing = cool as well right ??!!! normal

Lets Yusuke hug him even if he doesnt like hugs .

Makoto: Sergio thinks at first shes uptight, too serious, no fun, a snitch. I guess hes not wrong per se but ..

He was sooo mean to her at first when makoto hadnt joined the thieves and was spying them LOL. He did feel very sorry later and begrudgingly apologized along with ann and ryuj.

Nowadays he thinks mako is pretty cool, super smart and super strong. he still thinks she should let loose more, have more fun. He recognizes how hard she had it before joining. She appreciates how cunning she is. He had a playfight with her but sergio fights like a rabid animal and mako actually knows aikido . Im not sure if it continued but their fighting styles and what they look for in a fight are so different it didnt work out too well : ( sad. its ok.

Fuba: Fuba is like Sergios little sis : ). He wasnt sure if they should do something at first when the situation came up but he realized fuba was acting kinda like him before, isolating and being angry and sad etc... felt fucked up to not do something or try to help but he didnt want to be super pushy about it because he knew how he felt and how he didnt appreciate anyone who tried to drag him around even if they had good intentions. But yeah his friends made him realize how they ahd kinda pulled him out of a hole too at the beginning and he figured everyone could use a chance like that..

He really cares for her and tries to spend a lot of time with her, play anything she wants and watch her funny animes etc. He absolutely plays along with every game; he has a lot of fun too hes so silly as well. They bully eachother lovingly hehe. Hes willing to accompany her everywhere but i guess he realizes he wont be there for her forever so tries to gently push her a bit to be more independent.

Sees something about himself in her, although different. He tries to be someone that Younger Sergio would have appreciated in his life.

Haru: Sergio respects her a lot and thinks shes super kind perhaps too much.

He tries acting more serious or polite etc at first with her but haru ofc notices and is like. sergio its ok you can be yourself : ).

He still doesnt really act with her like he does with the others because idk theres this enormous barrier of respect that it seems unprope to act like that with her.. She IS sergios friend he just finds it super hard to be casual with her completely.

They like gardening together and showing eachother their plant children so thats something where they can be ever so slightly more relaxed in. Sumi: Sergio doesnt know sumi that well. He just thinks shes a cool , super kind girl whos very talented , polite. He always treated her really nicely. I think he enjoys the tyoe of respect he gets from Sumi even if its embarassing sometimes hahah since he feels she gets a different perspective of him ahah. He starts acting more casual in 3rd sem etc but theres also a barrier of respect here like with haru. Its more like.. welll sumi .. she thinks im cool and responsible i.. must fulfill that...

He is someone so fucking cool in sergios eyes. He considers him his worthy rival and admires him a lot ; hes just so damn cool, talented, smart , strong.. it kinda feels like he always knows whats he doing and even if he makes a mistake sergio finds it charming.

He used to feel envious and jealous of him for having thigs he didnt and apparently being much more succesful in general. But ofc things happen.. he realizes things werent as simple as they seemed and how goro felt quite similar to him.

There is a difference between a Bad Character and a Badly Written Character.

I have actively and fervently disliked many Bad Characters, but they never ruin the viewing experience for me. Why? Because they aren't Badly Written, they are just Bad.

Their role in the story is to be mean and cruel and unlikeable, but not unreasonably so. They aren't overly cruel and if they are it is built up to and makes sense. They don't get away with everything and their Badness is clever and smart and painful.

I have stopped watching plenty of shows because of Badly Written Characters. I don't get angry or annoyed because of the characters, but rather because of how the characters are depicted. Unfortunately, it seems like most villains/antagonists experience this treatment the most and people try to dismiss their evil, mary sue energy by saying, "bUt ThEyRe SuPpOsEd To Be DiSlIkEd." Sure, but they are also supposed to be realistic.

If an antagonist is not treated by the writers the same as the protagonist than when/if the protagonist succeeds over them it doesn't feel earned. The antagonist was never a formidable foe because they were exempt to rules so the writers can just do what they want to move the plot forward rather than actually take the time to make it a hard earned victory. Even if they do put in the effort to make the victory something that is struggled for, it doesn't feel that way because the antagonist was never subjected to established rules.

Obvious examples of Badly Written Characters in MLB are everyone Chloe and Lila, but I think Zoe is an interesting, less explored instance.

Zoe was an unnecessary addition to the story. Zoe was added as a replacement for Chloe. She wasn't added to bring depth to any of the characters or to expand the plot or anything, no she was added to replace a role in the story previously occupied by Chloe (the bee holder primarily).

So from the start, Zoe character was doomed, or at least, to make her an interesting and compelling character would have taken serious work.

I don't hate Zoe like I hate Lila (don't get me FUCKING STARTED on Lila holy shit) because of all the Badly Written Characters in the show, Zoe is the one of the less egregious cases. This is probably due to the fact that she plays a very minimal role in the story, only having, like, 2 episodes about her and otherwise just falling into the background with the rest of the classmates.

To improve Zoe's character she needs more screen time. In the story, she could serve as a great foil to Chloe and the pieces are already in place for this to happen. Show us how similar Chloe's and Zoe's childhoods were. Let us see how they could've been the same person and show us what happened so they aren't. This could be a key event that happens to both of them, a key event that only happened to one of them, a role model in one or both of their lives.

Also push Chloe and Zoe into more situations where they butt heads. Have them face the same problems and come up with different solutions. Create situations where they can be easily compared. This will show how different they are from one another and how "evil" Chloe is in comparison. They both had the same(ish) childhoods, have both face similar struggles, but Zoe was able to rise above this, to be compassionate and kind while Chloe succumbed to cruelty and bullying. This will bring more depth to both of their characters and, more importantly, bring a purpose to Zoe's existence outside of replacing some of Chloe's roles.

What ultimately needs to happen is for the writers and Atruc to get their shit together and actually decide what is going to happen with the show. They need to decide what characters are going to be "bad" and which "good", which characters will grow/change and which will remain stagnant. But if this show has done one thing consistently it's showing us that it can't figure out what is going to happen to any of the characters so MLB will always reside as a great example of what not to do when writing any kind of story.

They're absolutely right...

...It's the writers that deserve the lion's share of the backlash, for poor, innocent, boring-as-hell Zoe is merely a tool of the oppressor, aka Mr Astruc. What's being oppressed, you may well ask? Well, interesting storylines, proper continuity, two-dimensional personalities... I could go on. Everything that makes a show compulsive and rewarding viewing that Miraculous Ladybug conspicuously and utterly lacks in every department due to his increasingly destructive machinations, basically.

This pink-streaked plot device masquerading as a serious character can (along with another equally pointless individual called 'Soquerline' who was so unmemorable I almost forgot she was ever a thing) exists for one reason and one reason only: to diminish Chloe's relevance and role in the show to the sum of precisely nothing. Well after S5, job done I guess guys. Well done. Well done indeed. (Although apparently not... they're bringing Miss Bourgeois back for more torture in the London 'special'. Guess Tommy Boy just can't keep away from his favorite punching bag, can he?)

The irony is though, having such a super-sweet but dull-as-ditchwater Mary Sue to replace a well-established and multi-layered person such as Chloe actually sends out a seriously awful message. Why? Because if I was a bad kid and saw S1-3 Chloe, I'd think 'what a fascinating redemption arc, I can inspired by that and do better.' But after seeing S4-5 Chloe and what an arguable downgrade as a replacement the incredibly tedious Zoe is, I'd be more like 'well, obviously there's no point in trying to be good, because you'll probably turn into a psychopath overnight with no explanation in the middle of your genuine efforts to improve. And if what the show is presenting to me as the ideal for a teenage girl to be is the waste-of-blank-space that Zoe clearly is... then a life of deliquency sounds more tempting with every passing minute! Now, where did I put my spray can?'

The most shameless aspect to this whole argument though, is by those trying to paint the hapless Zoe as some kind of lesbian icon. Pardon? She got a plot-mandated crush on Marinette in one episode and somehow that makes her insipid and needless presence an asset for the gay community? Somehow a few people have got it into their heads if you 'dare' to make someone non-straight in cartoons these days you deserve a big pat on the back for that 'risk' alone. WRONG. They should also be fleshed-out, complex, necessary characters whose sexuality isn't just define them or deflect from deserved criticism as to what the hell they are doing there if they turn up in the middle of proceedings with no prior explanation. And that's all Zoe being gay is... an irrelevant trait Mr Astruc can point to cynically and say ' you're a bigot for disliking her whatever your reasons are, so I'm not listening to you' instead of engaging with the actual argument which is SHE IS NOT AND WAS NEVER NEEDED IN THE SHOW. Everything you required to make Chloe the brilliant character she could've been was RIGHT THERE in the script but you CHOSE to rub it all out and scrawl some hastily scribbled doodle with no personality other than being 'very nice' in her place. A tragedy. The worst case of self-vandalism I've ever seen. No wonder Jeremy Zag wants to start from scratch with his rebooted movies. More power to him, IMHO.

Needless to say, nearly all the above in the quoted post about her father loving her (we haven't met him yet, it's DEFINITELY not Andre Bourgeois, his name ends in 'Lee' for a start) her supposed growth (the only 'growth' she's had is when she turned into that giant golden Chloe after being akumatized) her alleged pansexuality (all in the desperate mind of the OP) her 'abusive' family (I think you'll find Chloe had it FAR WORSE over the course of the show in that regard, so why not idolise her?) is complete bunkum. and to be frank I couldn't compose a much delusional post if I tried. Sometimes I wonder: what planet are some people on to reach such implausible conclusions? I don't understand it, I'll never understand it and quite frankly I feel quite sorry for the arbiters of such risibly deluded takes.

In the death of night laid the chance to let unknown truths be known. The darkness offered solace, but it also allowed anger to burn. And that was exactly what you saw on Childe’s face when he approached you, his friendly facade dropping from their usual joking smile. 

The two of you were dating secretly, for given his position, it would be too dangerous to let the cat out of the bag. He was trying to protect you -- no, save you from the evils he had encountered on his own, the same way he was trying to protect his siblings from the raw, ugly truth. That was where he was wrong. He wasn’t protecting anybody. He was protecting himself. He was selfishly afraid that if you were to see his true self, it would make you love him any less. 

Blue jagged crystals were narrowed for his pair of eyes, piercing through your heart in mirth. His expression was serious, accompanied by emotions of pain and longing. 

You supposed you did cross the line today, but you were growing tired of this routine. 

“[Y/N],” he breathed out, sounding cold. “What makes you think you could waltz into the Northland Bank like that?”

Unfortunately, while you tried to dig deeper, you were kicked out by the one and only eleventh harbringer, Childe himself. He was furious then, breathing out raggedly at your mistakes, but now, he was angry in a calm manner, which, to be honest, was a scarier thing to witness. 

“Am I not allowed to visit my boyfriend’s workplace once in a while?” you spat out, returning a glare of your own. 

“You already know our situation,” he said. 

“And I’m sick of it. What is it that you’re so afraid to show me?”

He stepped up even closer to you, where you could see his clenched jaw and the glisten in his eyes. “I have nothing to show you. You had no right to dig into my life.”

Tears began to the prickle the corners of your eyes. “Are you serious?” you sputtered in disbelief. “You’re supposed to be my fucking boyfriend. Why is it such a crime to want to learn more about you?”

“I told you that it was to protect you, not me.”

“Oh, don’t lie now. I can see through your bullshit.”

“Don’t try to wring it out again,” he snarled. “I have no use for a nosy partner.”

A pang slammed you in the chest. You stared at with wide eyes, hurt spreading through your system. You noticed the way he stiffened up and knew he regretted his words, but it was too late by now. “I see. There’s no trust to begin with here.” Spinning around, you stomped out of the room and closed the door shut behind you. 

The ginger was left to his own devices, his head hanging low in pain. He was so angry, so terrified, so anxious all the time that the spitball fire came rushing out at once. He hurt you -- the one he learned to love, despite every obstacle that hurled his way. 

His gloved hand curled around the edge of the window sill, his eyes locked on the beautiful scenery of Liyue Harbor. The glistening lights and lamps were flickered on in the distance, basking the darkness in its glory. Citizens still milled around in this hour, always willing to make business. He wondered how easy life would be if he was a normal person like everyone else was -- not part of the Fatui, not having to resist bloodlust, and not having to hurt the people around him. 

It would be smart to let go of you, but he was selfish. He was selfish because he he loved you so much and wanted you by his side forever, but he could never let his horrid deeds come out to the light. 

If your face of disgust was ever aimed at him, it would be etched in his mind for eternity. 

The next morning he found you in the kitchen, eating a quick meal for breakfast. His eyes softened at the sight of you, hesitantly joining you at the table. He was surprised you were still here -- still having the patience to hear him out. 

“Comrade,” he murmured uneasily. “I’m really sorry about last night. You’re correct about everything. I’m... afraid of it all. But I’m most afraid that I’ll lose you if you learn the truth. I’ve done horrid things in my life, [Y/N]. There were so many sacrifices I had to make in this path I chose. So I understand if--” 

You shook your head, making eye contact with his sorrowful irises. “Do you really believe I would leave you that easily? I know you’re part of the Fatui and I’m still here. Have more faith in me.” He blinked at you in shock for a second, his pain replaced by utter adoration. His tall form maneuvered around the table until he found you. His arms wrapped you in a hug, his face snuggled into the crook of your neck. Your cheeks flustered at his actions, but you hugged him back anyway. “I’m sorry too,” you muttered. His face lifted, so close to your own that you could see his long lashes. 

“None of this was your fault.”

“Yes it is,” you protested. “I shouldn’t have tried to pry into your secrets for something you weren’t ready yet. I say trust, but I wasn’t being so trusting either.”

He smiled gently and kissed the side of your face, leaving you burning in embarrassment. “I don’t know what I’d do without you, comrade.”
