The Flavors to Relish at the Top Israeli Restaurant in LA
Tumblr media
Fresh Flavors From LA’s Top Israeli Restaurant
If you’re on a trip to LA, there’s no reason why you should miss binging on these flavors at the Habayit Restaurant, one of the top Israeli restaurants in the city.
Shakshuka
Coming from North America and adopted by Arabs and Jews during the Ottoman Empire, shakshuka didn’t take long to enter the hearts of Israelis. It is the staple food of Israel.
The original recipe used meat and vegetables. But contemporary shakshuka uses poached eggs atop a savory sauce of onion, garlic, tomatoes, peppers, and middle eastern herbs and spices, including coriander, cumin, fresh parsley, paprika, and nutmeg.
Shawarma
If you’re a meat lover, the shawarma is a feast for your eyes. It is a spiced and tangy lamb, turkey, or veal, stacked and roasted on a giant skewer, rotisserie-style. Chefs use an electric carving knife to shave off thin strips of meat, and after browning them on the grill, roll them up in a fresh pita. The dish is completed with salads, pickles, humus, tahini, eggplant, spicy sauce, amba (mango sauce), and fries.
Falafel and Humus
Falafel is regarded as the national dish of Israel. It is popular among vegans because of its high-protein and plant-based ingredients.
Modern falafel comprises ground chickpeas, fava beans, or both rolled to make round-shaped patties with spices. These are deep-fried till perfectly brown. Falafel is served with Israeli salad, spicy sauce, tahini, humus, chips, cabbage, hot peppers, and fried eggplant. Sometimes, they are stuffed inside a pita.
Humus is almost the national anthem of food in the middle-east. It is a spread made using boiled chickpeas, parsley, spices, tahini, and fresh lemon.
Conclusion
The food of Israel promises a dynamic, lavish blend of fiery, comforting, and refreshing flavors. It infuses Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influences to create an absolutely remarkable cuisine, with something to suit everyone’s taste buds.

Israeli police storm Al-Aqsa Mosque, raising fears of wider fighting
The official Palestinian news agency Wafa said dozens of worshippers who were spending the night praying were injured in the police raid.
By The Associated Press
JERUSALEM — Israeli police stormed into the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City early Wednesday, firing stun grenades at Palestinian youths who hurled firecrackers at them in a burst of violence during a sensitive holiday season. Palestinian militants in Gaza responded with rocket fire on southern Israel, prompting repeated Israeli airstrikes.
The fighting, coming as Muslims mark the holiday month of Ramadan and Jews prepare to begin the Passover festival on Wednesday evening, raised fears of a wider conflagration.
The mosque sits in a sensitive hilltop compound sacred to both Jews and Muslims. Al-Aqsa is the third-holiest site in Islam and is typically packed with worshippers during Ramadan. The spot, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, is also the holiest site in Judaism, revered as the location of the biblical Jewish temples. The conflicting claims have spilled over to violence before, most recently a bloody 11-day war between Israel and Hamas, the Islamic military group that rules Gaza.
By early morning, the Jerusalem compound had quieted down. A Palestinian official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media, said the Palestinian Authority was in contact with officials in Egypt, Jordan, the United States and the United Nations to de-escalate tensions.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said that 50 people were injured. Separately, the Israeli military said one soldier was shot in the occupied West Bank.
Tumblr media
--Palestinian media reported police attacked Palestinian worshippers, raising fears of wider tension as Islamic and Jewish holidays overlap.
Crowds of Palestinians gathered around a police station in Jerusalem on Wednesday, waiting anxiously for their loved ones — many of them wearing blood-stained shirts and limping on bandaged legs — to trickle out of detention.
People leaving detention said police used batons, chairs, rifles and whatever else they could find to strike Palestinians, including women and children, who responded by setting off firecrackers and hurling stones. Outside the mosque’s gate, police dispersed crowds of young men with stun grenades and rubber bullets.
Israeli police said they were not immediately able to confirm the reports and videos showing officers beating Palestinians.
Amin Risheq, a 19-year-old from east Jerusalem, lifted his bloodied shirt to show his worried mother red blotches all over his back and his bandaged arm, which he said was struck by a tear gas canister. He said that after being beaten and forced to lay on the floor of the mosque with dozens of others, his hands zip-tied behind his back, he was taken to the police station where he said he did not have access to a toilet, medical attention or water for over six hours. “They treated us like animals,” he said.
Tumblr media
Since Ramadan began March 22, scores of Muslim worshippers have repeatedly tried to stay overnight in the mosque, a practice that is typically permitted only during the last 10 days of the monthlong holiday. Israeli police have entered nightly to evict the worshippers, stirring tensions with young Palestinians who demand to pray at the holy site until dawn.
Tensions over control of the holy site have been heightened by calls from Jewish ultranationalists to carry out a ritual slaughter of a goat in the compound, imitating the ancient ritual sacrifice performed on Passover in biblical times.
Israel bars ritual slaughter on the site, but calls by Jewish extremists to revive the practice, including offers of cash rewards to anyone who even attempts to bring an animal into the compound, have amplified fears among Muslims that Israel is plotting to take over the site. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he is committed to preserving the status quo at the compound.
Tumblr media
After some 80,000 worshippers attended evening prayers at the mosque on Tuesday, hundreds of Palestinians barricaded themselves inside the mosque overnight to pray. Some said they were determined to stay the night to ensure religious Jews didn’t carry out animal sacrifices at the site. After they refused to leave, Israeli police moved into the mosque, descending on Palestinians with batons.
Israeli police said “several law-breaking youths and masked agitators” brought fireworks, sticks and stones into the mosque, chanting insults and locking the front doors. “After many and prolonged attempts to get them out by talking to no avail, police forces were forced to enter the compound,” police said, adding that one officer was injured in the leg, while some 350 Palestinians were arrested.

OJT EATS | The Palomar
Tumblr media
It’s been many years since we have been to either The Palomar or its sister restaurant The Barbary (read about our previous visits here and here) but have always had very fond memories of a couple of great meals.  The other day, we walked past The Palomar and seeing there was no queue (which is pretty unusual), we decided to pop in for a bite.
Tumblr media
You can’t come to here and not get some of their super fluffy pitta breads.  They are only small but they are just so pillowy and soft; absolutely delicious!
Tumblr media
To go with the pittas, we ordered what was on the menu as David’s Hummus.  We don’t know who David is but he clearly knows his way around a chickpea.  The hummus was amazing and just look how gooey that yolk is in that pickled egg!  I could easily have gone through many portions of pitta bread just with this.
Tumblr media
The other dish we got to go with the pitta was the ashkenazi ikura which was essentially sour cream and salmon roe, with a little bit of oil and some chives.  This was another perfect complement to the pitta and tempting as it was to just fill up on sour cream, hummus and pittas, there was more of the meal to come!
Tumblr media
First up of the rest of the meal were these lamb skewers with carob molasses.  These were lovely little meaty kebabs with the molasses going really well with the lamb.
Tumblr media
We also ordered a plate of enoki mushrooms with chuma paste (which I think is a red pepper paste).  It did have a bit of a kick to it but tasted great!
Tumblr media
This was the Jerusalem mix.  A mix of chicken liver, chicken thigh and chicken hearts, this was a great hearty mix of chicken bits that was perfect for a rainy winter’s day.  If you happen to have any pitta left over, that sauce is just asking to be mopped up with it.
Tumblr media
It can be hard to get in without a booking but it’s definitely worth a wait.  The food is amazing and with the open kitchen, always has a great buzz to it.  We definitely don’t plan to wait years for our next trip here!

I have been waiting to taste this סביח /sa-'beekh/ for so long...
... and now, after 17 hours on the road, we arrived at Angel's cafe in Sharon, MA, there they serve the best Sabeekh I have ever had outside of Israel!
Those 17 hours are definitely showing, but I decided to ignore it, and focus on sharing this delight with you...
... not without lessons in Hebrew, off course! 😀
I have a detailed lesson for you on the magical sabeekh which I will post very soon (and others this great place inspired me to make that I think you will love)
but if you know what sabeekh is, tell me in the comments your experience with it, and what do you think about it.
Stay tuned for this and other lessons from Angel's cafe...

𝙂𝙞𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙙 🧀 I’ve got a feeling these meat and cheese pita toasties from @keff.london might be the next craze! They’ve only been open 2 weeks in @camdenmarketldn but they are far from new. They’re serving up Middle Eastern classics with years of experience, such as hummus, shakshuka, labneh, and more. Predominately a veggie and vegan company, they have now added meat to their cheese pita toasties. The lamb is DELICIOUS; it’s meaty, fresh, minty, and full of flavour, and when that’s mixed with the classic cheese toastie taste this is a snack you can’t resist to pick up on the way through. . . . . . #middleeasternfood #camden #camdenmarket #camdentown #pita #pitabread #pitta #toastie #toasties #cheesetoastie #lamb #streetfood #israelifood #israelicuisine #foodporn #foodphotography #foodphotoshoot #foodphotos #foodpicture #foodpicoftheday #londonfood #londonstreetfood #londonfoodblogger #londonfoodie #londonfoodblog #londonlife #london #londoneats (at Keff) https://www.instagram.com/p/COuy9e1ne--/?igshid=17ptmkejzgpkg

I decided to give a whole new flavor profile to Middle Eastern Shakshuka. This one is made with Indian spices and it was a huge success. I tweaked the amounts until I got it right. It’s my choice for New Year’s brunch for my salt-free guests. The salt is optional. Doesn’t really need it because there’s so much flavor. Recipe in the profile and on my blog. #shakshuka #eggs #brunch #newyearbrunch #newyearbrunch2020 #middleeasternfood #indianfood #israelifood https://www.instagram.com/p/B6k_dLNlEhU/?igshid=1bp5v0f97axaf
