Since returning to northern Gaza after the Israel-Hamas ceasefire, Palestinians have been grappling with the lack of shelters that could protect them from the cold and rainy winter.

Most have returned to destroyed homes, forced to sleep in makeshift shelters, which have been hit by heavy rain and strong winds over the past week.

While Linda Jarour was sleeping in her neighbour's tent near the ruins of her home in northern Gaza’s Jabalia, a roofing sheet fell onto the tent.

The heavy rain and strong winds had caused it to batter her shelter.

“I thought it was an Israeli air strike,” the 45-year-old told Middle East Eye. “It fell close to me and my husband.”

Her hopes of returning home were shattered when she received a call from a relative. Israeli air strikes had destroyed her house. "

My house was big and well-decorated. It was like a paradise for us," Jarour said.

"Since that day, my husband started suffering from diabetes, and I found out that my blood pressure had become dangerously high.”

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Public Works and Housing, more than 250,000 homes have been destroyed or severely damaged by Israeli forces in 15 months of relentless bombing, which has killed over 48,000 Palestinians.

Meanwhile, Palestinian authorities in Gaza accuse Israel of continuing to hinder the entry of aid, including tents and shelters, in violation of the ceasefire agreement.

Israel's genocidal war on the besieged Palestinians of Gaza has entered its 400th day.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has killed more than 43,500 Palestinians, 70 percent of them women and children, and wounded over 102,700 others, according to local health authorities.

According to a report published by the UN Human Rights Office on November 8, about 80 percent of the victims were killed in residential buildings or similar housing. The most represented of verified fatalities were children aged 5 to 9, between ages 10 to 14, and babies and children from 0 to 4 years old.

Analysts say the estimate is conservative and the actual death toll could be around or beyond 200,000, as thousands of Palestinians remain missing or buried under debris of bombed homes and shops. Another 10,000 have been abducted and jailed at Israeli torture sites.

Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its military campaign in Gaza, where its has uprooted almost all 2.4 million people and continues to starve tens of thousands by blocking crucial aid.

"But Palestinians elected Hamas!"

False. Let's take an analytical look at the reality of the situation and the statistics behind the most recent Palestinian election.

First of all, the most recent parliamentary (and legislative) election in Palestine took place in January of 2006, just over 18 years ago.

At that time, the estimated population of Palestine was about 3,761,904 (reported as of July 2005). Interestingly enough, at this time, just over half of the population of Palestine (52.3%) was under the age of 18. Those numbers alone suggest that Palestinians as a whole could not have voted for Hamas, since the majority of the population was underage.

But of course, there's even more to this story. Of the population that was eligible to vote, only 1,341,671 were registered to vote and only 1,042,424 votes were cast. Of the cast votes, only 990,873 were labeled as "valid" votes. That comes out to approximately 26.3% of the population of Palestine in 2006 having cast valid votes.

However, the plot thickens even further. In 2006, Hamas was under a party called "Change and Reform", which won the election by a slim margin with a majority of 440,409 votes compared to the runner up with 410,554 votes. Doing the math, this means that in the most recent election in 2006, Hamas, under the Change and Reform party, won the election with a vote from approximately 11.7% of the total population of Palestine.

And if those numbers aren't already enough, let's compare that to the current population, seeing as the 2006 election was so long ago. Making the bold assumption that every single person who voted for Hamas in 2006 is still alive, and compared to the current Palestinian population of about 5.4 million people, that comes out to be approximately 8% of the current population having voted for Hamas.

Yes, you heard me right,

Now I know I hardly have any followers and the chances of this post getting any attention are slim to none, but these numbers are so important. When we talk about Hamas, October 7th, and the ongoing, centuries old Israeli-Palestinian conflict, we have to consider the analytical data behind all this. Those of us supporting Palestine have never said we're in support of Hamas, in fact many of us understand the detrimental impacts Hamas has had on the Palestinian political system.

All we're asking is for you to have even an ounce of compassion and understanding for the fact that tens of thousands of innocent civilians are being killed at the hands of the Israeli military. This is a genocide. Israel is an apartheid state. There's no debating that.

Hundreds of pro-Palestine people attended a demonstration organised by the Palestinian Assembly for Liberation-Awda (Pal-Awda) on Tuesday in New York City’s borough of Brooklyn to protest against a real estate event advertising land for sale in occupied Palestine, with protests turning violent.

The protests against the land “expo” by Pal-Awda and many pro-Palestinian supporters turned into fighting between the pro-Palestinian side and far-right Zionist groups that organised a counter-protest.

Betar USA, the US franchise of the right-wing youth Zionist movement, organised a counterdemonstration across the street from the pro-Palestinian protesters.

A statement by Pal-Awda said the pro-Palestinian attendees were “spat on, kicked, harassed, maced, physically struck and punched by Zionists.

One counter-protestor held a lighter to a Qur’an, another made sexual gestures with the Qur’an, and others mocked the [Muslim] call for prayer”.

Various media reports said that a protester affiliated with the Betar group was seen carrying the yellow flag of the Jewish Defence League, a far-right extremist group that has been banned as a terrorist organisation in a number of countries. S

everal members of Betar waved Israeli and American flags and held signs saying “Bring Them Home,” referring to the Israeli captives in Gaza.

As the protest progressed, several members of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community from the neighbourhood joined Betar’s protest and added chants in Yiddish.

A 42-year-old pro-Palestinian protester from Brooklyn was arrested and charged with third-degree assault for punching a 61-year-old pro-Israel protester in the face, according to the New York Police Department.

The “real estate” event was organised by the Getter Group, an Israeli real estate company based in Boro Park, Brooklyn, according to Pal-Awda’s statement.

The Getter Group repeatedly promoted the event on their website and social media channels, referring to it as an “Israel real estate expo”.

The group’s website advertises properties “available” in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, which are illegal under international law.

Here in Gaza, it’s 55°F (13°C), and it’s raining heavily. While many people around the world enjoy the winter under warm blankets or with a hot drink, life here is very different.

Families who lost their homes are living in tents that can’t protect them from the cold or the rain. The ground turns to mud, and the wind cuts through the thin fabric. It’s hard to imagine staying warm in these conditions, but for many here, this is their reality.

For families like Islam’s, winter is a season of pain. His family lives in a tent that barely stands against the rain and wind. His mother is fighting cancer, and his grandfather, who is over 85 years old and has a physical disability, suffers greatly in the cold. Last winter was unbearable for them, and this year is starting to feel just as harsh.

Winter here isn’t magical; it’s survival!!
