FFXIV Write Entry #15: Lux Solaris
Tumblr media
Prompt: deodate (free write) || Master Post || On AO3
A/N: Spoilers for Dawntrail.
---
It was in the heart of the Meso Terminal, before the throne of the Queen Eternal, that Synnove discovered just what the fuck had been going on with her Dreadwyrm Protocol.
The Protocol was the most strictly-maintained of all her spells, the one most rigidly bound off from every array in her grimoire with pages of page-blocks to ensure its core programming didn’t leak into any of the carbuncles. It was also the spell that had seen the fewest modifications—in fact, beyond locking out Galette and then ensuring the smooth linking between it and her Phoenix Protocol, it was otherwise unaltered from what Prin had given her years ago. It was a perfectly functional spell, did exactly what it needed to rain down untold destruction, and if Synnove never had to manipulate the Dreadwyrm’s aether again in her life, it would be too soon.
(Too, there was the fact Synnove was still mad as hell that Prin hadn’t exactly divulged just what the spell it had gifted her had been. The coding had been so alien to her eyes that she hadn’t recognized it not being a mere variation on Allagan egis, and, well, she always did her initial testing with Galette—
IDENTIFY THE ENEMY YOU WISH TO ANNIHILATE.
—suffice to say it was a good thing she’d gone out to test the damned thing on Seal Rock when the island wasn’t being used for wargames. Bad enough both she and Galette had spent the next sennight coming down from the resulting panic attack.)
But that meant she was keenly aware of when the Protocol began to behave oddly. It was how she had first noticed Phoenix’s aether beginning to strengthen, back on the First, which in turn had led to her and Urianger and Alphinaud and Alisaie losing their collective minds as they build out a demi-primal array from scratch.
The past few moons hadn’t seen quite as a drastic change in the Protocol as had been on the First. No, it had been far more subtle; strange bits of
not stagnation, but frequent shifts toward umbral polarity, even a faint hint of Light at some points. Less rage had filtered through the Protocol, that millennia of hatred barely tempered by its filtering through a mere demi-primal that always accompanied an activation of the Dreadwyrm Protocol, instead more of a cool, calculating regard.
And now, here in this space made of levin and electrope, Synnove had activated the Protocol, and what had answered was not the lesser form of the Dreadwyrm.
This demi-primal was white as Light, and its draconic shape was more closely aligned with what a son of the First Brood would have looked like, and not the warped abomination he become under Ascian influence. Its head lacked eyes, however, and strange crenellations crested its head and neck. A crown of Light wheeled above that crest, and its wings—
—its wings were gods-be-damned fucking SWORDS.
It was only a heartbeat between the activation of the Protocol and Ivar becoming the control core of the demi-primal. Synnove could feel her youngest son’s bafflement in the back of her mind, and knowing he was all right was about the only way she didn’t panic in the middle of a battle.
And then, in a cool, crisp voice, echoing with multiple tones through her mind like clarion bells:
LIGHTWYRM SUBROUTINE NOW ONLINE. SUMMONER PRIME LOCATED. DESIGNATION: SYNNOVE GREYWOLFE. REFULGENT LUX GRANTED TO SUMMONER PRIME. SUNFLARE GRANTED TO SUMMONER PRIME.
“What,” Synnove said intelligently, “the fuck.”
The demi-primal stretched its right wing, and one the Queen Eternal’s attendant drones slammed into and broke into pieces. Synnove, jolted back to awareness, dodged through the chaos to return to the safety of Heron’s back and rejoin the battle properly.
“Synnove, what the fuck?!” Rere somehow made the question a part of the ballad she was weaving to bolster their attacks.
“I don’t know!”
ANNHILATION TARGET DETECTED. QUERY: SUMMONER PRIME, DOES THIS UNIT HAVE PERMISSION TO ENGAGE?
“Yes,” Synnove said, already casting a Ruin III spell. “With extreme prejudice!”
The strange not-quite-a-dragon seemed to regard the Queen Eternal. And then it opened its mouth, and R O A R E D.
PROTOCOL: EXODUS ACTIVATED.
Light filled the Interphos, the same brilliant radiance that had answered Hydaelyn’s call during Her test, deep in the aetherial sea. And then it exploded, and the Queen Eternal howled her rage.
“SYNNOVE WHAT THE FUCK.”
“I DON’T KNOW!”
--
“So, I think I know what the fuck.”
Nearly a moon after successfully saving the world—again—the mages of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn (sans Urianger, who was still off somewhere with Thancred, and he was going to be outraged he’d missed this) clustered around the table in one of the conference rooms of the Baldesion Annex. Synnove sat cross-legged on the table itself, fist propping up her cheek, Galette around her neck, and Ipomoea primly loafed in her lap. The Highlander knew she looked as she always did after a research binge: hair a disaster, clothes wrinkled from being slept in, circles beneath her eyes.
The only thing missing was chalk dust, and that was only because she’d been up to her eyeballs in unspooled carbuncles for the past damned moon.
Krile reached forward and tapped at an Allagan projection device built into the table. It lit up immediately, copies of a subset of arcanima array now floating in the air for easy view.
“Let the record show we’ve got a segment of the Dreadwyrm Protocol on display,” Synnove said tonelessly.
G’raha, acting as the meeting scribe, chuckled quietly, but did as requested.
“This bit is the manifestation coding, it’s basically the mathematical image of the Dreadwyrm that the Allagans put together. What’s on display now is what Prin gave me. And this—”
Ipomoea blinked her eyes with an audible shuttering sound. The array changed.
“—is what it looks like as the Lightwyrm Protocol.”
“Well, that’s a significant change,” Alphinaud said slowly, his eyes wide. “I can see the similarities that we can assume are for ‘dragon,’ but what commands for unaspected aether are now for Light.”
“I want the bits that make the sword wings,” Alisaie said. “That is inspired work.”
Alphinaud barely restrained a sigh, glancing heavenward instead for strength as everyone else chuckled.
“I can see where the commands are branching off to affect spells like Astral Flow,” Y’shtola murmured thoughtfully. “Still following the framework you created for demi-primals. But you can still access the Dreadwyrm Protocol?”
“Mmm,” Synnove said. “But have to do this one first. Then in sequence, it’s Dreadwyrm, back to Lightwyrm, then Phoenix, then the cycle repeats. I can’t say I’m not too mad about that, s’nice not to have my trauma shoved in my face whenever we need some extra firepower.”
“Probably has to do with balancing the Light aether, though I can’t figure out how just yet,” Krile said.
Synnove inclined her head. “That’s my theory at the moment, but I’ll need to do more testing. Regardless, that brings me to this.”
Ipomoea blinked again. A different array now floated above the table, causing everyone to frown.
“Is that a message array?” Alisaie said. “Like the Arcanists’ Guild uses for courier work on their carbuncles.”
“It is very similar,” Synnove said, and gently tapped Ipomoea’s head. The sapphire carbuncle twitched her left ear a perfect fifteen degrees, and the array display zoomed in. “You all see this bit of sigilwork and equation here?”
Murmurs of ascent.
“The one time I saw this,” Synnove said, enunciating clearly, “was in Elpis. When Venat sat down with me and the girls, and showed us the full spell frame for her traveler’s ward.”
Five pairs of eyes just stared at her. Synnove raised her eyebrows, waiting. She’d had her moment of garbled cursing three days ago when she’d found that damn signature.
“Are you telling us,” Y’shtola said slowly, “that this new Protocol was made by Hydaelyn Herself?”
“My dearest, darling friend and partner in magical crime,” Synnove drawled, “that is exactly what I’m telling you.”
Krile was covering her face with her hands. “Oh, great good gods, we’re going need to put this under the strictest lock they have in Noumenon,” she groaned.
G’raha was still frantically writing. “I’m not wholly sure I’d trust it to stay safe even there,” he said. “My vote would be to store it up at Bestway Burrows, or perhaps with the Watcher.” He glanced up at Synnove. “This is more for my own amusement than any record keeping, but what did Rereha say about this particular revelation?”
“She said, quote: ‘Oh, cool, Mom decided as a last hurrah that she could get in a last round of one upmanship on the Ascians and design a better dragon.’”
Alisaie and Krile were both giggling before Synnove had even finished talking. Alphinaud didn’t try to stifle his sight this time, while Y’shtola and G’raha exchanged rueful looks.
Synnove merely shrugged, ignoring Galette’s resulting grumble. “She’s probably not wrong.”
“Oh, the loporrits are going to adore that,” Krile said around her giggles. “Sword wings.”
“Sword wings,” Synnove said. And grinned.

AGUNGALUDA was an odd one... I could pick out the world GARUDA easily enough as the mythic bird in Hindu lore, but for the longest time the "AGUN" bit confused me, but I think it's supposed to be AGUNG, in reference to the volcano, Mt.Agung, on the island of Bali in Indonesia. In fact Indonesia and Bali in particular assign particular cultural significance to the Garuda even among the broader umbrella of Buddhist cultures. So it's AGUNG-GARUDA, the Garuda of Mt.Agung.
SIMURGH is a giant bird of Persian myth, said to have the body of a peacock, claws of lion, and the face of either a dog or a man.
HRESVELGR a Jotuun in Norse myth who takes the form of an eagle and commands great and terrible winds.
SUNFLAYER could in fact be be "SUN FLAYER" but might actually be "SUN FLARE." If it is "Flayer" then thematically that feels like it should somehow be almost Aztec adjacent(?) but I can't quite find anything to make that stick, so maybe that's just my bad hunch. SUN FLAREs are at least an actual thing, but I can't quite link it to the monster as a concept...
WISGLOVER is something i've fussed over as a WA fan for years... The Japanese is written WI-ZU-GU-RO-U-BAA[ォィă‚șă‚°ăƒă‚ŠăƒăƒŒ]. Assuming it's got two roots and the first is in fact WIZ[ォィă‚ș] feels like a safe enough bet(it could also be WITH but that only contributes to the nonsense), but then GU-RO-U-BAA[ă‚°ăƒă‚ŠăƒăƒŒ] becomes this weird dead end... GLOWER? GLOVER? GROVER? GLOW-BAR? Nothing makes any more sense than not.
JOHN DEE we covered with the boss polls. A reference to the classical occultist, alchemist, and spy JOHN DEE; prototype of the modern wizard archetype and the origin of the 007 moniker.

Chapter 75 - Frozen Crystal - The Glitch
“Could you please explain it to me once more?” I asked, feeling uncertain about the plan. There was a brief silence before Raphael answered. “We have to meet with the council and act as if nothing is wrong. Then Kryo will lead us to the crystal, fix ourselves, and then we can leave.” I nodded, trying to sound confident. “All right, let’s go see the council then.” We followed Kryo, who took us to the rooms of ice, a vast hall where the council members were waiting for us. They were supposed to confirm my identity as Nox, the king of the kingdom of the Whispering Wind. Some of the ice dragons recognized me from their previous visits to my kingdom or by accidentally seeing me in the Kingdom of Aura, but there were others who had never seen me before. The Kingdom of the Frozen Crystal had no king anymore. It was ruled by an oligarchy of elders who were elected by their peers. Kryo introduced us to them with a formal tone. “Honorable council members, I present to you Raphael and King Nox, who have come to our kingdom seeking our assistance.” One of the elders spoke up. “Nox? Is that really you?” Another one echoed the question, so I decided to play along. “I am King Nox of the Whispering Wind. I have come out of hiding after many years to ask for your help.” The council looked at me with curiosity and suspicion. They turned their attention to Raphael, who was standing next to me. “And who is this other creature with you?” Kryo explained quickly. “He is Nox’s original form. Nox is a shapeshifter, and his true name is Raphael. They are both part of a prophecy that foretells the defeat of the dark lord, who is growing stronger by the day.” Another elder nodded and said “Thank you for the clarification, Kryo. But may we hear from him directly?” I nudged Raphael gently and said, “This is your chance to tell them something about yourself, if you want.” He looked at me with a puzzled expression and then asked the council. “Are you sure you want to know more about me? Great council of the ice dragons?” They replied in unison. “Yes, we do. Please speak.” He hesitated for a moment and then said, “All right, but promise me that you won’t harm me or Nox for what I’m about to reveal. It’s something that only I know, and it’s very important.”
Raphael began to recount his tale: how he came from the land of the Hidden Shadows, where he tried to lead a normal life despite his extraordinary powers. How he lost his abilities multiple times for reasons unknown to him. How he faced the dark lord in a "friendly conversation". How he tested my immortality and betrayed the dark lord’s trust, and how he rescued me at the last moment when he recognized me. As he narrated, I filled in some gaps. He did not know what brought me to his land, so I told him, "I was searching for the Kraken with the Water dragons when our expedition went awry. I transformed into a fire eagle by choice and flew away from a secluded island. I landed in a strange territory that turned out to be the land of the Hidden Shadows, where my powers failed me and have not returned since." The council listened to our story with interest and admiration. “You have shown great courage and integrity,” they said. “We respect your values, and we wish to help you restore your frozen powers. We suspect that they have something to do with the dark lord’s influence.” I asked them, “How do you know that? If I may inquire.” They explained, “The dark lord has the power to freeze the abilities of others on his domain. Only we, and the SunFlares, have dared to explore his lands and learned how to unlock our elemental powers from his grasp.” They seemed to know a lot. More than I did, certainly, but perhaps not more than Raphael, who appeared to be well-versed in the secrets of those lands and their inhabitants. The council then made us an offer: “We will grant you access to the Frozen Crystal. It can unfreeze your powers, but only if you are worthy of them. Otherwise, you will be turned into a statue of ice by the crystal. Are you willing to take the risk, King Nox and Raphael?” I hesitated. Becoming a statue of ice sounded like a horrible fate, and even without my powers, I still had a life to live and a family to reunite with after many years. I expressed my doubts to Raphael, who reassured me: “Don’t worry, we’ll be fine. Both of us. We are protected by the prophecy of Kryo.” I said, “It’s not the prophecy of Kryo. Akira saw it and told it to him.” He replied, “I know that. The dark lord told me about her too. She’s dangerous, that one. She has been causing trouble in our land. Luckily, she never found our cities.”
We followed Kryo to another chamber, where a staircase descended into a subterranean wonderland. Sculptures of ice adorned the walls and the floor, reflecting the colors and patterns of the frozen water. The architecture was stunning and original, unlike anything I had ever seen. We reached a large gate that radiated a soft blue light. The council members halted, and Kryo stepped forward.
“The crystal is on the other side of these doors. Please follow me.” He said, touching the gate. It unlocked with a click and swung open by itself.
We entered a circular room with a high ceiling. In the center, there was a gigantic crystal that shone like a star. I gasped at its beauty and power. Raphael whispered in awe, “It’s like the core of heaven.”
I looked at him curiously. “The what?”
He shook his head. “Nothing! Sorry.” He seemed embarrassed.
I decided to let it go. Kryo cleared his throat. “I can’t go any closer than this. This is your moment. We aren’t forcing you to use the crystal. It’s dangerous, but we hope that it will help you. You just need to get close to it and touch it. Don’t try stealing it; otherwise, it will turn you into a statue of ice for sure.”
I swallowed hard and hesitated. Raphael, however, didn’t waste any time. He walked towards the crystal, leaving a trail of snow behind him as he approached it. I shouted, “Be careful!”
He gave me an okay sign and reached out his hand to touch the crystal. As soon as he did, the crystal activated with a flash of light that blinded me for a moment. When I could see again, he was standing there with his wings, looking fine.
He smiled at me. “Don’t worry, it’s nothing exceptional. Just touch the crystal, and don’t be afraid. You’ll feel nothing. It’s just a bit cold.”
I stared at the crystal, feeling nervous. Then I gathered my courage and started walking towards it. With each step, the floor felt colder under my feet. I felt as if the crystal was trying to freeze me to the ground, and the snow trail followed me too, swirling around my neck with a chilly breeze. I reached out my hand and touched the crystal.
The same thing happened: a bright light that burned my eyes, then nothing. I didn’t feel different psychologically, but I felt relief and power. I transformed into a cloud of light, and then I moved away from the crystal.
I felt a surge of joy as my powers returned to me. I quickly resumed my original form and exclaimed, “It works!” I turned to Kryo with a radiant smile, like a child who had just made a wonderful discovery and wanted to share it with his parents. “Thank you, Kryo, thank you so much. How can I ever repay you and the others for this?” He chuckled and said, “You already know what you have to do.” I tilted my head and said, “I’m not sure I do. What is it?” He looked at me with a serious expression and said, “You have to stop the one who tried to kill you. What else?” I said, “That sounds like revenge.” Raphael chimed in, “Revenge is never a good motive, but I agree that we need to stop him. Kryo, can we speak with you and the rest of the council again? I want to know how the Dark Lord is progressing. He should have reached the main continent by now, right?” Kryo nodded and said, “They have. They’re not hiding anymore.”
Raphael was skilled at gathering information and analyzing it with his existing knowledge. He had helped the shadow dragons with their expansion plans, and he knew what their next moves would be. He revealed them to us: more and more invasions, a race for resources, and then the creation of hybrid dragons and machines, like something out of a sci-fi movie. This world was no match for such technology, even with magic. It was doomed to be conquered. Raphael also said, “The Dark Lord never intended to wipe out the other dragons. He only wanted to strip them of their elemental powers. And he has the means to do it, as we have seen.” I said, “But we have the frozen crystal, don’t we?” A council member said, “Don’t get too confident. Not everyone can wield it. You’re fortunate to be worthy of it. Others would just become frozen statues, like we warned you.” I glanced at an ice statue of a dragon, a king, and asked, “Like that one?” He said, “Exactly.” I was surprised and asked, “Was that a real dragon or just a sculpture?” Kryo said, “That was the tyrant who ruled this kingdom for centuries and a distant relative of mine. Unfortunately.” I said, “That’s unfortunate indeed. So he wasn’t worthy of the crystal, huh?” He said, “Apparently he tried to steal the crystal and take it away from the kingdom. That’s what he got for his greed.” I thought that was a tragic fate and a remarkable council. They had treated me and Raphael very well. Before we left, I asked, “Can this crystal also restore your powers after a portal glitch?” Kryo asked, “A portal what? How do you know about that?” I said, “I thought I told you that I experienced it once.” He said, “Oh right. Well, yes, it should work for that too. It has never failed.”

Dracogenesis
Teirsym Stillwater was not one for flights of fancy. She was known for being a very practical, obedient girl. She was not one to do reckless, impulsive things.
Now, sitting in a carriage transporting her from one gilded cage to another, she couldn’t stop thinking about throwing the door open and bolting into the woods.
She sat there, her hands gripping the crushed velvet fabric covering the plush carriage seats with a white-knuckled intensity that was unbecoming of someone of her stature. She stared over at her brother, Jonah, as he absorbed himself in a book.
They looked similar, the two of them. Their square faces and aquiline noses were inherited from their father, along with their blonde hair. Their brown eyes and slight statures were both from their mother--though Teirsym had gotten their father’s thin hips.
Despite Teirsym’s lack of conventional attractiveness, she was on her way to an arranged marriage.
The carriage door was so close, the gilded handle glinted in the sunlight, it beckoned to her with a honeyed light that reminded her that freedom was so close--if she only had the bravery to take it.
Teirsym Stillwater had never been brave before.
The little door separating the driver from their carriage opened, jerking Teirsym out of her thoughts. She shifted, a little guiltily, as the driver spoke.
“We’ve heard rumors of dragons in this part of the mountains.”
Teirsym perked up at that. She had a fascination with dragons ever since she was a child, and she wondered briefly if there were any metallic dragons that lived near the home of her betrothed--they did live high in the mountains-
“Chromatic or metallic?” Jonah’s inquisitive dark eyes have lifted from his book and were turned to the guard driving the carriage.
“Chromatic.”
Teirsym’s heart rate picked up in her chest.
“Odd,” Jonah commented. “Isn’t that fishing village with the dragon guardians supposed to keep the chromatic dragons out of these parts?”
“They are, Sire,” the guard affirmed. “It seems they’ve become lax in their duties. Either that, or the chromatic dragons in this area are docile enough to not warrant extermination.”
“Alright. Keep a sharp eye on the horizon.”
The guard nodded and shut the door.
“Are we in danger, Jonah?” Teirsym’s voice was soft, hesitant. She spoke with a Roostian accent--posh, sophisticated, strained.
“No.” Jonah has gone back to his book, and sounded bored with her question. “That village I mentioned wouldn’t abide an evil dragon to nest in these parts. If anything, we might get stopped by a dragon and go on our way. The worst that could happen is that we barter your dowry for safe passage.”
“Wouldn’t that make the Sunflare Clan upset?”
“They’d understand if it meant the safety of the new addition to their household.” Jonah looked up from his book and gave her a smile, seemingly missing the shiver of disgust that ran through Teirsym at those words and the thoughts they brought. “We’ll be alright, Teirsym. As long as I’m here, nothing bad will happen to you.”
Teirsym felt soothed by his words. Jonah had taken years of fencing and knew how to defend himself. Nothing could get to her while he was around, not even a dragon.
She sat back in her seat. Despite the relief that Jonah’s words brought her, she couldn’t seem to get rid of the tension knotting her body.
Her arranged marriage awaited her on the other side of the mountains. A forced arranged marriage, because her mother had caught her sleeping with her childhood best friend and had decided that Teirsym needed to marry a man immediately in order to save her from homosexuality. She didn’t want this. She didn’t want to be married off to the first man who would take her just so her mother wouldn’t have to look at her anymore. She didn’t want to keep living the rest of her life with her mother’s voice in her head telling her that she had brought shame to their family by daring to sleep with a woman.
She couldn’t imagine spending the rest of her life with a man instead of someone she could actually love.
She looked down to hide the tears springing to her eyes. She hated this, she hated every second that brought her closer to the man who would have her for the rest of her life--every jostle and bump of the carriage made her knotted stomach clench harder.
She turned her gaze to her brother and bored holes in him with reddened eyes.
For the entire trip from the island nation of Raven’s Roost to where they were now in the Splinter Mountains that split the nearby continent of Westfall, Teirsym had debated telling him the real reason for this journey. He didn’t know, he just thought that it was Teirsym’s time to get married, and that she had picked this man out of the ones their mother had presented to her.
She didn’t know how he would react, and that kept her mouth shut. Her mother had reacted with fury and disgust, her father hadn’t said a word, and she doubted Jonah would react in any way positively.
A loud sound interrupted her thoughts. She couldn’t quite distinguish the origins of it, and that had her looking to Jonah in a panic.
“Some animal, Teirsym, nothing more.” His voice was dismissive as he turned the page in his book. “We have armed guards with us, nothing is going to hurt you.”
Teirsym nodded. She clenched her hands back into fists around the seat and tried to calm the anxiety that was starting to churn in her gut.
The next hour or so passed in silence. Teirsym had gotten out her embroidery, and had almost forgotten about the whole thing until the little window opened up again.
“Sire, there’s smoke on the horizon.”
Teirsym paused, her needle poised to draw another pink thread through the peony she was embroidering.
“Which direction?”
Jonah was still sounding bored, and some part of Teirsym wanted to strangle him for not taking this seriously.
“It seems to be coming from the coast.”
“Odd. Perhaps it’s a wildfire? In any case, steer us well away from it.”
“Understood, Sire.”
The window closed again.
“It’s probably nothing, Teirsym,” Jonah assured her before she had a chance to ask anything. “Probably a burn that got out of hand, nothing more.”
Teirsym nodded, but a certain sense of dread had welled in her stomach and didn’t seem as if it was about to leave any time soon.
Her hands shook as she stabbed the needle through the fabric. In the fabric, tug till taught, back through. Back and forth, back and forth, breathing life into this flower one stitch at a time.
It was about fifteen minutes later that they heard it.
Heavy whooshing sounds, audible even from inside the carriage.
“Jonah-?!”
“I don’t know. Hold on.”
He opened the little window just in time for an earth-shattering roar to shake the carriage and the earth it stood on. Jonah’s book slid off the seat, and Teirsym clutched her embroidery with white-knuckled hands.
Teirsym’s heart plummeted as the guards outside screamed a word she had never really associated with fear before that moment.
“Dragon!”
Her eyes widened, and her mind stubbornly stuck on one detail instead of anything useful. On Raven’s Roost, there was a shield around the entire island that protected it from dragons. She had never even thought to fear being attacked before.
Jonah threw open the carriage door and leapt out, drawing the sword he kept stashed under the seat in case of emergencies. He turned to Teirsym and spoke.
“Stay here, stay quiet, stay safe.”
Then the door slammed shut and the carriage shuddered to a halt.
Teirsym’s hands shook from where they held her embroidery hoop. She listened intently as she could.
She could hear shouting, guards conversing, and the heavy whooshing coming ever-closer.
She squeezed her eyes shut as tears slid down her cheeks. She hated it, hated how she could only cry, she was stuck in this blasted carriage and couldn’t do a damned thing about it-
There was another roar, and then the carriage was upside down.
Teirsym blinked, dazed, as she realized she was now haphazardly laying on the ceiling of the carriage. It took her a moment to right herself, and it took another moment to realize it was getting hot, fast.
She threw open the door to the carriage and crawled out, getting to her knees amid fire and flames. She looked around wildly.
She saw guards firing into the sky, she saw the horses kicking from where the carriage had been knocked over. They screamed in pain, the guards yelled, and the sound of crackling flames was deafening. She felt like it was all coming to her from behind a pane of glass, like her brain was having trouble connecting what was happening at that moment with her.
Her hands flew to her mouth as she saw a guard not fifty feet from her get his top half bitten off by a giant, red maw.
Teirsym backed up rapidly, tripping and falling in her attempt to escape.
She found herself frozen as that red snout turned and sniffed. The earth shook as the dragon--because she was now realizing that this beast in front of her that boggled her mind with the size of it was in fact a dragon--moved over to the carriage.
Teirsym squeezed her eyes shut just in time for the last image she saw to be the dragon’s jaws snapping shut around one of the horses. The screaming still seemed to be muted, but Teirsym clapped her hands over her ears anyway because the only thing worse than the screaming, she was finding, was the crunching.
There was another heart-stopping scream and another set of horrible crunching, and then the world seemed to stop.
Teirsym opened her eyes and lowered her hands after a moment, trying to see if the dream was over and she could finally wake up.
The dragon stood before her, larger than anything she had ever seen, larger than buildings and larger than her, with eyes as green as the glass bottles champagne was served in. Those great green eyes were wide, crazed, boring into her with an animalistic fury.
Teirsym couldn’t move. She was frozen in place, and she couldn’t move. Her heart was pounding in her head, she felt like she was going to be sick, she couldn’t move, couldn’t think, couldn’t breathe-
The earth shook as this, this thing took another step, and that’s when the spell was broken.
Teirsym turned and scrambled to her knees and then to her feet and took off for the woods. Her shoes slapped desperately on the earth and the woods were so close-
Two more steps made the world quake from behind her, and then she was pinned by something far larger than she could ever dream of being, or even comprehend with her mortal brain that wasn’t built for the mysteries of the world or the infinities she was finding in and around this beast.
She was turned over, and she stared up at the blood-stained maw of this dragon, those glass green eyes blinking sideways as they inspected her.
One large, scaled hand rose and with the care and delicacy of a calligrapher, the dragon pressed its claw to Teirsym’s forehead and drew a line down, curving around the side of her face and past her lips.
Teirsym screamed. She screamed until her voice was raw and she thrashed desperately and she was useless. There wasn’t a damn thing she could do in the face of this beast’s seemingly limitless strength.
Her heart pounded against the inside of her ribcage and Teirsym felt so despicably, sickeningly, infuriatingly small--like a fledgling sparrow pinned by a hunting cat.
The first line finished at her jawline, and a second was carved into her face with the same sadistic care, starting near her ear and crossing the first to end under her eye.
Blood streamed down the side of her face and down her neck, and Teirsym couldn’t help the great, heaving sobs that wracked her frame, or the futile tears that ran down her face.
The dragon pulled that claw from her face, admiring its handiwork. Blood dripped from its maw onto Teirsym’s face, mingling with her blood and her tears.
Suddenly, the hand holding her down was gone, and Teirsym looked to see that the dragon had whirled around to face a single survivor, and-
“Run!” Jonah’s voice was a roar, a plea, a desperate command. “Run, Teirsym!”
She gaped at him helplessly, but the dragon roared in response and that was all it took for her to scramble to her feet and bolt for the woods.
She didn’t dare stop, but she threw one final look over her shoulder just in time to see her brother locked in battle with this dragon.
Tree branches whipped at her as she ran, but she didn’t let them slow her down, because if she slowed down she might be caught and if she was caught-
She didn’t let herself stop until her lungs burned and her legs collapsed beneath her.
She fell to the forest floor in a heap, barely catching herself with her hands. Pine needles dug into every inch of skin that pressed against the forest floor, but they were just prickles compared to the fire coming from her face.
The situation finally caught up with her, and the realization of everything she had seen set in. She violently emptied her stomach onto the grass and pine needles until there was nothing left to come up except bile.
She crawled away from the pile of what had been breakfast and curled up next to a tree. A careful investigation of the mark on her face told her that the blood had caked and dried in a mess on her cheek, and the rivulets trailing down her neck had done the same.
The reality of the situation hit her.
She had no idea where she was, she had no way home, and she had lost her brother.
Teirsym Stillwater did what she could in the face of these facts.
She curled into herself and she sobbed there on the forest floor.

The Misfits - Fantasy AU
This has been on my mind for awhile, and decided to finally do something with it
So! Basically, there are different creatures in this one realm I'm calling Rikki. These creatures can vary, from humans and elves to dragons and witches. Humans live on the main island, however the other creatures do inhabit the outskirts and are welcomed into the inner parts. But most stick to their own islands, which circulate around the main one.
In this specific AU, the sides are these creatures. You'll see more about which ones later. They're pretty much a very, very diverse crew of pirates, but instead of stealing gold and such, they help those with troubled pasts, because they can all understand how person they're helping is feeling. They're known as the Misfits on the main island, and when trouble actually arises, are looked to for help.
But I suppose you're done hearing me blabber, so here are the character designs and some of their traits!
Damien (Deceit) Andrews
Tumblr media
Damien, commonly going by Dee or Deceit(only close friends can call him Dee), is a shapeshifter
His human form is defective, and he has patches of dragon scales all around his body. Largest patch is around his left eye, that matches his dragon form
His dragon form is his favorite
He doesn't have control over what his animal form will look like(i.e. if he chose to become a bird, he'd have no control over which bird)
He used to live on the main island, but most humans really didn't like him because he looked really strange. His last straw was when he got into a fight with someone and they pulled a knife on him; they had cut his arm and a few minutes later the humans watched as a dragon flew off towards the horizon.
Absolutely adores flying, almost as much as he does sailing
He loves the ocean, away from anyone who might ridicule him for his appearance
Was the first "Misfit"
He's terrified of thunderstorms; lost many precious ships to them, along with his pet dog(he was devastated and cried for a literal two months)
Will murder anyone who tries to harm his crew
Virgil Shay
Tumblr media
Virgil is a witch, however he only knows healing spells
Was the second one to join the Misfits, and is Dee's right hand man
He's not very useful in a fight, and has been kidnapped on multiple occasions
The others try to teach him how to fight but Virgil just can't seem to get it
Joined Damien because the shapeshifting pirate seemed nice and also saved him from a different crew- whatever happened to them, Virgil doesn't know
Whacks people with his broomstick whenever they annoy him
Sometimes the others will ride with Virgil on his broom. On those days, whoever's not on the broom ride on Damien's back(when he's in dragon form, of course)
Curses like a sailor
He loves the night and the stars
Mornings are not for him
Logan Lowell
Tumblr media
Logan is a winter elf
His fascination with the idea of realm jumping and space quickly got him into trouble though, since the other winter elves are stubborn and quite passionate about the cold and don't really like anything else
Has the ability to control and create ice, but needs to rest if he uses it in large amounts
Believes there are other realms like theirs, like alternate realities, but has never gotten the chance to try collecting much proof
Became a part of the "Misfits" after nearly drowning and being saved by them, he says he's forever in their debt
Was the third member of the Misfits to be recruited
Actually really skilled in fighting, but he doesn't want to ruin his coat
His coat is the one thing that if he lost it, he'd be incredibly upset. It helps him keep calm and relax whenever stressed.
Virgil's the only other person who can wear it
He's the brains of the Misfits. Most of the others are idiots(cute idiots in Logan's opinion, but still idiots)
Roman Sunflare
Tumblr media
Fire elf/human hybrid
Roman has the ability to create powerful weapons, usually making daggers that can burn through almost anything
His skin radiates a warmth, and he's practically immune to the cold
Dramatic boi
Joined the Misfits after a mishap happened in his village, where he may or may not have burned down a few houses with one of his swords
Magic comes from his horns; if they are cut off, he loses all his magic and can possibly die from it
The tallest of the Misfits
Will cuddle you to death
Giant sap and sucker for romantics
When he falls for someone, he falls hard
Already had met Logan, but it was long ago, and was travelling with Patton Carter before meeting Damien, Virgil, and Logan
Patton Carter
Tumblr media
Patton is the only human in the Misfits
He commonly wears pastels, and you can never get him away from his scarf
Loves to wear skirts, they're just easier to move around in
Is the "heart" of the group, and the others will defend him with their lives
He would be absolutely devastated if any of them died though
Despite what some may think, he can fight. He just really, really, really hates fighting
Emotional support of the group
Oldest in the group, but shorter than all of them(except Virgil)
Was travelling with Roman after he ran away from home; his father had died and his mom grew bitter, to the point she was abusing him despite his efforts to help her
Before he met Roman though, he was taken advantage of and found himself in a near-death situation with a disgusting asshat of a man
Can't be around those who yell, he'll flinch and start to tremble and tear up. If no one notices and he can't leave the situation, he ends up breaking down
Initiates the most hugs
Typically stays back with Virgil whenever the others get into a fight, and helps him create some healing mixtures to give them so they'll heal faster
Is always the first person someone new on board turns to, because he's just so bubbly and adorable and sweet despite the shit he's gone through and there's just something about him that make people trust him
C U D D L E P I L E S
Well, here's my AU! I'm planning on turning this into a full-blown fanfic, and the first chapter should be up sometime this week!
Have a wonderful morning/noon/night everyone!

SPR’s Horde characters
Draggka ♀ Darkspear troll Hunter (Marksmanship)
Younger sister of Dranka, Draggka has protected Azeroth and its people with her loyal raptor companion Spike from the numerous threats that have arisen. During the campaign to stop Garrosh in the Alternate Draenor, she fell in love with Archmage Khadgar, they later married after the Legion’s 3rd invasion. Despite being loyal to the Horde, Draggka has unofficially left, due to Sylvanas’s actions. She is currently pregnant with her and Khadgar’s first child, Zal’ria.
Dranka ♂ Darkspear troll Druid (Feral)
Old brother of Draggka, he was presumed dead after being kidnapped by Zalazane’s thralls. However, he escaped and lived with the druids, becoming one himself. He finally returned to Draggka after the Echo Isles were retaken, and reintegrate himself into society. He was instrumental in getting his sister and Khadgar together, and looks upon the relationship favourably. After Draggka retired from adventuring due to her pregnancy, Dranka took up a Heart of Azeroth and the Speaker of the Horde mantle in her place.
Zal’ria ♀ Half-Troll Mage (Frost)
Oldest daughter of Draggka and Khadgar, she was accidentally conceived on their honeymoon, coming into the world sometime during the war between the Alliance and Horde. Raised both in Karazhan and Dalaran, she grew into an accomplished mage, not least due to her father and her Uncle Medivh, who has taken her under his wing as his apprentice. Although she identifies more with the Horde due to her mixed race, Zal’ria is not part of either faction, and refuses to engage in combat with any of them.
Khara ♀ Half-Troll Shaman (Enhancement)
Youngest daughter of Draggka and Khadgar, even though it seems the other way around, Khara was also a happy accident. Unlike her sister, however, she is boisterous and almost always ready for a fight - woe betide anyone who insults her family. Instead of the arcane arts, Khara heard the elementals, and was trained by several shaman to harness her powers. She is closer to the Horde than Zal’ria, but has refused to take the Blood Oath, under advice of her mother.
Harnaka Fireforge ♀ Orc Shaman (Enhancement)
An orphaned orc adopted by a troll and orc pair, Harnaka was going to follow in the path of her mothers by learning how to smith. The discovery of her connection to the elements led her to becoming a shaman, although she uses them in her smithing now. She has known Draggka since they both began inventing, and they are very close friends. She has recently began a relationship with Cayeli.
Aiyaona Grimtotem ♀ Tauren Paladin (Protection)
One of the few Grimtotem that remain in Thunder Bluff, Aiyaona constantly harbours guilt about her tribe’s actions, and tries do things so that other members of the Horde never question her loyalty (which is becoming challenged in light of Sylvanas’s leadership). Painfully shy, the only people she really opens up to are Draggka and her group of friends. However, she is getting much closer to the Highmountain tauren Jeipuh, and some suspect romance is in the air between them.
Elizabone ♀ Forsaken Warlock (Demonology)
Once a priestess of the Light, Elizabone turned to darker magics after her mind was freed from the Scourge, believing the Light had forsaken her in her darkest hour. Although possesses a cynical attitude, her time in the Plaguelands and long friendship with Draggka and the others softened Elizabone’s grudge against Life. She always wears a veil to cover the lower half of her face for a reason she will not divulge.
Cayeli Sunflare ♀ Blood elf Monk (Windwalker)
Cayeli is one of the two black sheep in her staunchly arcanist family - her older brother Solaen was lost and presumed dead, only to be revealed in the Legion’s 3rd invasion that he’d become a demon hunter. Choosing to learn to brawl with her bare hands and feet, she later refined these ways when the Pandaren came to Azeroth, becoming a monk. In a move that is likely to annoy her family further, she has began dating Harnaka.
Tinkerspring ♀ Goblin Priest (Holy)
In typical goblin fashion, Tinkerspring uses her ‘faith’ in the Light to make money, and when that doesn’t work, she has health potions to sell too. However, unlike her twin brother Fizzlespring (a mage who has a habit of setting fire to his debtors), she possesses a softer heart, and will occasionally treat people for free in dire situations. Her friends rely on her skills and appreciate her courtesy at not charging them for her healing powers.
Lasai Vustri ♀ Nightborne Mage (Fire)
A privileged mage in Suramar, Lasai subtly aided the Nightfallen resistance against Elisande by providing masquerades to rebels and arcwine to the needy, as well as sabotaging the disguises of Elisande’s infiltrators. Excited to explore the outside world, Lasai befriended Draggka and later managed to provide Khadgar with a Zandalari disguise so he could meet her in private. She also sews in her spare time, and made the magic carpet she relies on for transportation.
Jeipuh Proudleaf ♀ Highmountain Tauren Warrior (Protection)
Whilst Jeipuh came from a line of herbalists and druids, she decided to become a warrior, and distinguished herself enough to become one of Mayla Highmountain’s bodyguards. She met Aiyaona during the Legion’s 3rd invasion, and the two became fast friends. When Mayla granted Jeipuh indefinite leave, she joined Aiyaona to see the world beyond the Broken Isles.
Tamorn Mellowbrew ♂ Orc Monk (Brewmaster)
Orphaned as a baby, Tamorn was found by a Pandaren pair and raised as their own, hence his unusual surname and upright posture. He learnt the ways of a Brewmaster from his parents, and has become a loose friend of Draggka and her company, who often come to him if they need someone to distract the enemy. When not fighting, he is often formulating other brews or maintaining his hair and beard braids. Tamorn was wounded after the Battle for the Undercity, and has taken up carpentry while he recovers.
Razla Forewatch ïżœïżœ Mag’har Orc Hunter (Survival)
A member of the Warsong tribe from the alternate Draenor, Razla was only too happy to come to Azeroth, to test herself against the wilds. She used to hunt alone, until she came across a hyena she bonded with after it  inexplicably defended her from an ambush. With Shenzi by her side, Razla continues her mostly solo exploits, helping the Horde only when its motives satisfy hers.
Jala’wi ♀ Zandalari Paladin (Retribution)
A prelate of Rezan, Jala’wi devotes her life to protecting Zandalar, though always nursed a curiosity about what was beyond the island’s shores. Her questions were answered by the arrival of the Horde, in the tow of Talanji. After Rezan was killed, she found a new Loa in the form of Torcali, drawing on her vow to protect her people. She has also now left Zandalar to protect her people from the threats that seek to destroy them and Azeroth. And seeing the rest of the world is a good bonus too.
