In the face of intense enemy fire, U.S. Marines from the Fifth Marine Division work their way up the volcanic sand slope from Red Beach One, on the island of Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945.
They slowly advanced towards the base of Mount Suribachi which had become completely hidden in the background by smoke.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the battle (1945 - 2025).
