Tell us about new ships! I know it takes a lot for anything romantic to catch your eye, so I'm curious. But also - any new group dynamics that are intriguing to you?

I'm definitely not the biggest shipper these days and writing wise most ship fics i write are gifts but I probably could be talked into just about any ship if the dynamics are interesting enough lol.

New ships I'd be interested in writing this year:

1. Billy Batson x Marcus Shugel-Shen

I love these two separately and I love their dynamic together. Whether they're friends, rivals, crushes, or boyfriends I could get behind writing them!

2. Duke Thomas x Izzy Ortiz x Riko Sheridan

Literally any combo of these three would be so good. They are so ride or die for each other like instantly. The whole We Are Robin gang has such amazing and underutilized dynamics that got tossed aside when Duke became an official batfam member. I'd love to see them together again, even if I have to do it myself.

3. Jou Kido x Mimi Tachikawa

Im semi-secretly a huge Digimon nerd and these two were always my favorites. I always thought they'd be super cute together in an opposites attract kind of way. I know middle school me would be thrilled to see me write something for them.

I'd also love to explore Sapphic Mary Marvel but I don't have any specific ships in mind for her!

New group dynamics:

I want to explore more civilian group dynamics like the cast of the Daily Planet or WHIZ radio.

I'd also be interested in writing more freddy centric pieces so him with his own teen hero team would be a lot of fun to explore (especially with secret identity shenanigans and misunderstandings)

the femslash shipper to radfem pipeline should be studied. I'm not claiming this person is radfem but I feel like she's almost there.

it all started with me shipping snamione a couple years ago and my friend who is only into femslash ships was sort of rolling her eyes and not saying anything bad just little things about the age gap but whatever, she never liked age gaps. So it was fine. I was writing a lot of fanfics and she was reading some of them, and she mildly started getting interested in the fics where I wrote F/m relationship and she kept saying how important that is that the roles are reversed, what a wonderful work am i doing and it felt nice cause my fics were never that popular in the fandom to begin with. so it got better for a time. and last year I got into some mlm ships, oh my god you should've seen her face, you should've seen her disappointment when I stopped writing snamione abandoned a few wips even and started writing mlm ships, and then like around two months ago she sent me a whole ass rant about Edward/Envy ship from the full metal alchemist unprompted! Mind you I never shipped Edward/Envy I'm in totally another fandom! And she just decided to sent me that and blabbering how people should respect canon and Edward/Envy is shipped because of the way Envy is looking. And when I asked her to elaborate why, she went on and on how Envy is feminine looking man and that people are replacing Winry with a man because they hate women in ships. When I pointed out how wrong that is she started yelling that mlm ships are overall made because people don't like seeing women in their work the whole anti-fujoshi rant you know? And today she sent me a message saying she will not be talking about fandom stuff iwth me because she's anti-mlm ships and doesn't like them... 👁️👁️

this is entirely unprompted on your end, but i love your darcy and faramir takes and wanted to get your opinion on aragorn/faramir as a ship.

i'm salivating over it and nobody. cares. but i just love how it can show the possibilities of book faramir being a "threat" to aragorn's kingship in a way that nobody else is...how they can relate through their shared ancestry but the entirely different ways it impacted them in their respective lives - something about aragorn being the heir of isildur, growing up surrounded by elves, arnor. something about faramir being distinctly aware of the legacy of the stewards, his numenorean heritage and how it's fading away in the world of men, gondor (my fav world in lotr, you are so under-appreciated, gondor.) i personally adhere to the stewards-were-most-likely-also-royalty headcanon because of that extra juicy tension. throw in the i-knew-your-father-as-a-young-man aspect, the whole steward-quite-literally-serving-in-wait-of-the-true-king aspect? it's everything.

i dunno. the natural cause and effect of "return of the king" & "departure of the steward" is so interesting to play with in a romantic context, especially if it keeps both of them in the limelight when naturally, it should only be one of them? i think it's the aragorn ship that pushes his character and ambition the most, and in the same way, it can push faramir to show more machiavellian traits, more of him utilizing his political power and/or personal strengths. especially since his canonical fate is extremely satisfying but also...very conclusively an *ending* if that makes sense.

i might just want to see faramir clashing with aragorn wanting to wage more war. let him cook! let the man speak about "queen among other queens: not a mistress of many slaves"!!!!

also must admit that it's my contrarian ass wanting to rebel against the fanon "aragorn never ever wanted to be king" + "faramir is a pathetic meow meow" headcanons. the existing faramir x aragorn fics i've read all adhere to it which is frustrating.

Anon, this is my #1 Tolkien ship and actually one of the only m/m ships I've ever been super into. I used to guiltily sneak-read Aragorn/Faramir as a teenager because I grew up in a conservative community and hadn't come to terms with my own queerness at the time, and was still figuring out how to get by in that community just as a Democrat, much less a lesbian.

Anyway, I got a huge kick out of your ask because it's basically point-for-point my own feelings about them. If you haven't seen it, I even wrote a ship manifesto for them over ten years ago.

And unfortunately I do also agree that the (very PJ film-inflected) fanons around both characters have made it very difficult to find fic for the ship that isn't deeply OOC for the original versions of the characters (tbh the last time I looked, it was hard enough to even find F/A fics where Faramir had black hair, much less his deeper canon characteristics). Add in the fanon depictions of Gondor and the Stewardship, and a lot of what appeals about the pairing is lost for me. I read some good ones a longggg time ago, but wouldn't begin to know where to find them now.

(I know I should be the change I want to see and write some myself, but apart from the AU f/f and m/f/f versions, I think the closest I ever came to it was this post about a mostly-the-same-as-LOTR AU only with Faramir/Aragorn and this feeling explosion about "Faramir actually does accepts the dream-visions obviously intending him to be the one going to Rivendell but also it's Faramir/Aragorn.")

I feel like with the advent of the whole debate surrounding how fiction affects reality and whether shipping xyz makes you a bad person, there have been two shifts; treating fictional characters like they're real people capable of feelings and wants, and, on the flipside, treating real people like they're fictional characters.

The first shift has been talked about... honestly a lot, so I won't repeat it. However I feel like the second shift has been on the rise too, and I haven't seen much on it, so I want to talk about it here.

As you may well know, I'm an author. A transgressive author, I guess, if you want to give what I do a name. I write about topics that aren't socially acceptable, like rape, incest, violence, grooming, et cetera. I'm aware a lot of people don't like what I do, and thankfully so far those people have left me mostly alone.

There are a lot of people, however, who do like what I do, and do appreciate the stuff I write. And those are the people, it seems, who often forget that I'm a real person too.

Over the past year I've gotten multiple messages from people who enjoy my fics, especially the darker ones, who take the subject matter of my stories as a carte blanche to tell me whatever. I've been told, unprompted, about childhood trauma, recent trauma, explicit sexual fantasies and more, and on one particularly nauseating occasion, someone decided it'd be fine to tell me they wished they'd been raped as a child.

I would like to remind all of you that I am a human being.

I'm not your therapist, I'm not your parent, I'm not your partner, and for the majority of you, I am not your friend. I may be closer and more accessible than a traditional author because I have a Tumblr and a discord server and the like, but that does not make me your buddy. Even my close friends cannot just tell me anything they'd like unprompted without my permission, because I am a human being too, not a therapy chatbot.

I have boundaries, and I would like them to be respected.

5. If you could make only one of your OCs popular/known, who would it be?

well honestly Selene is already what I would consider a popular oc because like. more than a handful of people know who she is and have said nice things about her and people have ??? drawn her ??? unprompted ??? which is WILD shoutout to the Selene fandom once again. so if I had an option to make one (1) oc popular on a larger scale it would probably be her because I already know she'd click with people (and also she's my favorite and I'd never get sick of talking about her/seeing other people talk about her).

but also as a secondary option, Aqun and/or Adina because I feel like they have some fun nuance to them and I'd be kind of curious to see different people's takes/opinions/interpretations of them

7. Are your OCs part of any story or stories?

most of them are part of the story of their associated videogame, and then there's all the fic I'm writing. I do also have some non-fandom characters/settings rotating in my brain, but it's nothing concrete enough to talk about

no OCxOC ones, but a lot of OCxcanon ones tbh. if we narrow "OTP" down to One True Pairing as in "I can't envision them with anything else" then it's Selene and Edér (surprising no one) and Mae and the Devil of Caroc (which also shouldn't be surprising). if we interpret it as "favorite ship regardless of whether this PC has other ships", then I'm adding SolAqun to the list bc they've also been on the brain lately. the holy trinity of Doomed Yaoi, Undoomed Yuri and Impending Doom Het Ship

25. The OC that resembles you the most (same hobby, height, shared like/dislike for something etc?)

funnily enough probably Aqun. we look nothing alike but Aqun🤝me (multicultural, multilingual, single child, STEM, Logic and Rationality as a coping mechanism, inclined towards Making Things, burning hatred of Social Overcomplication)

Adina would 1000% be on here and her blog would be red-themed with yellow/blue/green accents, have a custom HTML theme she edited herself with artwork BY her, and it would be just all of her interests in one big pile with a barely functioning tagging system. she posts her vitaar designs a lot and her pfp is Her Actual Face with her favorite vitaar design up to date. she uses all caps/keysmashes a lot and vibes perfectly with tumblr's more absurdist kind of humor. Funny Nonsense comes to her effortlessly

LORENZO. he's trying so hard to figure out how to People and having the physique of a Death Omen + an evil voice in his head is not helping. also he was a slave for the first 24-ish years of his life and old habits of Be Quiet Be Helpful Don't Speak Unless Spoken To die hard

making you look at: the guy from the previous question. he's a runaway slave. he's a Ghost Bard. he was briefly possessed by the god of death and killed everyone in his master's estate with a song. he can sing ghosts into existence. he's haunted by his evil past life. he doesn't speak Aedyran (Eoran English) that well yet. HE'S SHY.

@curiouslavellan I have to shout you out again because brainstorming Selene and Helaine plotlines in real time in DMs has been one of this year's highlights for sure. the people don't even know about the soul merging in POE1 and the Selene Is Dead drama in POE2. they don't even know about the werewolf au (well. one other person knows about the werewolf au)

I’m rewatching ‘World Enough and Time’ so I thought I’d write another Doctor Who oneshot about Bill and the Master as Mr Razor during their years on the colony ship. The concept of my fic is too crack to put into sensible words, so for a New Years’ Eve gift from yours truly, here’s a snippet that gives you the general gist:

Hello internet people, I’m the Doctor, I’m a Time Lord from the planet of Gallifrey… I have a feeling that you probably already know that. If you don’t know who I am and how I ended up travelling the universe, perhaps you should go to a different webpage to read about people you’re more familiar with? I’ll cut right to the chase - despite being a time traveller, I often feel that time really is of the essence. 

Anyway, a long time ago, I was on a colony ship with Cybermen and two versions of my ex(-best friend), and during that time my friend Bill ended up stuck with one version of the Master for years. I’ve hacked into the camera footage from her time on the ship, and I’ve discovered some interesting stuff, like the one day where the Master launched into a lengthy unprompted monologue about his made up backstory which somehow involved not one, but two talking animals and a beat-for-beat retelling of the young adult novel ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar. However, one of the most interesting things I discovered was the one afternoon where poor Bill made the mistake of asking ‘Mr Razor’ for advice on romance. 

I’ve written a transcript of that conversation on this webpage for my own amusement as well as yours, because I’ve got a few hours without any planets to save and sometimes reminiscing on the past cheers me up a lot. To make things easier, I’ve written the Master’s speech in plain text, since that regeneration had an awful habit of rambling so I’ll have to write more of it, whilst Bill - who, for this conversation, presumably felt that brevity was the soul of wit and therefore said less - will have her brief interjections written in bold text to give them more importance. Have fun, I know I did.

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?

Ahhhhhh, this fic. I had a lot of fun with this fic, trying to find a serviceable Jak voice when we don't exactly get him doing a lot of expository dialogue, and also I had a lot of feelings that led to it. I love Jak and Daxter so much, the games and also the guys, and their relationship and all its little layers is so fascinating to me. Some Doylist (and meta) descriptions of them and also Jak in general kind of drive me up the wall because it seems like the writers/developers wanted Jak to be this hardened, badass, grimdark jerk who's constantly on the edge of flying off the handle, including at Daxter, and I legit just don't get that from the actual games. I get a lot of warmth and heart between Jak and Dax, and again Jak in general, and so when I mindlessly replay the games I tend to do a lot of musing about relationship stuff we don't see in the game because of time constraints but also sorta get implied through character development (and also cut content). And I've just always really enjoyed Jinx and found it funny how similar he and Daxter are—despite the travesty of having neither Jak nor Daxter actually interact with him (and Grim and Mog) in the sewers—to the point where I genuinely decided that I think Jak would feel a certain level of comfort with Jinx's nonsense purely because he's so used to Daxter's nonsense.

Which of course leads to a bit of introspection in the ficlet itself about how basically nobody besides Daxter treats Jak like just a normal dude, and Keira and Samos are outright disturbed by the changes he's undergone, so it must be a breath of fresh air to meet a dude compulsively incapable of being normal to Jak but in just an annoying Daxter-ish way. And of course I love a dumb ship and it drives me absolutely crazy just how incredibly gay Jinx's little nicknames for Jak were. Like I get that this was like 2002 and the culture was different and all but come on.

In a 15-minute mission Jinx derisively calls him "pretty boy", sassily calls him "sugar" (pronounced suga'), randomly brings up his hair, calls him "blue boy" because he apparently didn't want to say pretty twice in a row, says the words "You're pretty handy with that iron, blondie" in cold blood completely unprompted, says he's "got the magic, man" after Jak saves his life for the dozenth time, admiringly says "nice moves", again completely unprompted snickers "sweet as a ballerina" while Jak is jumping because he is abnormal and unwell, tries to encourage Jak by yelling "knock 'em silly, Jak", yet again calls him Pretty Boy and then also "tough guy" if Jak wonders away from the group, commits a third Pretty Boy Crime™ if you smack into him a couple times, and caps it all off with a smarmy little "buddy" at the end of the mission. He drives me insane. I'm sure the reason for all of *gestures* that is because they just let Cutter Garcia let loose and have fun in the booth but what they ended up with is a 30something-year-old man who is down horrendously for an obnoxious, over-powered teenager and simply unable to be normal about it. I love it, 10/10, no notes.

ANYWAY, I wrote it like that because I'm obsessed with Jak and Daxter (and also Jinx) in a way that is mildly concerning to feminism, thank you for asking.

So, yeah- When Scott first meets Knives, and I'm not entirely sure how much time passes between then and when they start dating, it was *literally* her seventeenth birthday, as I am reminding myself reading back over these panels presently. And then at the start of book six, the first time we see (real, non-dream,) Knives, she has apparently been eighteen for a week!

Now, I'm going to preface with a little something before I go further into this: I am totally fine answering this ask and others like it I think! but, I will note, I do get like a (not fun) physical sensation in my chest- partly anxiety (lol) but also something else I think- thinking about them like 95% of the time- it's gotta be like. Handled The Right Way, if that makes sense. Let's get into it.

So, first off, I'm just gonna re: some of the stuff relative to this I've posted here before- both nonrp and rp, since I use RP to develop my read on Kim and shed some light on how I see things I guess!

I think I've gone over my feelings a little bit in the discord as well, and there might even be more rp stuff relative to it, but I'm not going to go back and get any of that honestly- at least, not right now, or unless requested, since I don't really feel like it's necessary, if it does exist. This gives a pretty good glimpse in I'd say- especially that second to last one there.

So. Yeah.

Used to ship it; have expanded my horizons since then. I don't really want to knock it because like... for some people this is a legitimate life experience for them- one that might have even turned out well, miraculously. And there also a lot of minors in this fandom evidently, so like, any other baby gays out there just wanting to Project for a minute? I feel that. Sincerely I do. It's not the wisest choice but better to read fanfiction about it than go out and actually make out with a 23 year old, Gods forbid. (Genuinely felt sick thinking about that; fucking gross. Any minors out there: Please Make Good Choices. Look out for yourselves. Begging you. There are too many freaks in this world- I promise you whoever you're thinking of probably isn't the magical exception.)

But there are definitely things to consider about them that are very interesting to me, still, so like. I'm in this weird state of conflict; I don't know if it's just me being like "it happened, you can't escape it" or having been desensitized/some sort of Brainwashed by how many times I had to use Knives in the game to quick heal- maybe something else but I just don't feel like flaying myself open like that unprompted for just anyone- but like. Oh man.

Sorry, gathering/writing this that feeling like went away but came circling back for this last bit, it seems. Which makes sense I guess. I feel like I'm setting myself up for a Pyre right now eugh shfsgkjfhjg

I dunno. I'm not gonna lie and pretend like I know it to be some big formative ship for me in my early teen years, but it was kind of important in finally coming around to realizing how queer I was, I think. My memories of the time are fuzzy, but it would have been one of the things- there were likely larger ones, my current obsession could be recoloring my past here so I'm trying to acknowledge that.

But there is like. A dynamic that is posited by them that is also one I'm a really big sucker for. More so now than I was then, so I find myself grinding my teeth about that a fair bit at times.

I definitely still really like it as something unrequited no matter what I think; I like the idea of Knives having a really big crush on Kim, genuinely. I think it's cute and funny as hell for how uncomfortable it would make Kim, who's just trying so hard not to be a fucking creep while this ray of sunshine hangs off her- something she absolutely does not deserve (in her eyes.)

I'm obviously more partial to Kim resisting any advances made at her, but I can understand so, so badly why someone might be attracted to the idea of Knives managing to thaw some of Kim's frigidity with that. Ugh.

If they work for me, I think they'd have to work for me after Knives is gone at college for a bit. Kim would need to know Knives for longer than she knew her as a minor- and they'd have to be FRIENDS in that time, quite strictly. Kim would need to not feel (intensely, because frankly, she would unavoidably feel this way at least a little no matter what,) like she was a fucking groomer going into it, basically. I don't know what I think past that.

You know, I'll put my feelings like this: with the exception of a fic I saw recommended to someone that intrigued me, I have managed to resist reading any/many fics featuring them, despite it being a large majority of the wlw Kim fics that exist, and also kinda just Kim fics generally. It's kind of Insane, especially considering how much Kimona SCREAM at you from the pages of the comic itself- but I digress....

I've been working on this for like over an hour now I think so I really should cut myself off. I am like,, too hungry and mildly stoned to be rambling off about this maybe. If you want more concise/specific thoughts, I recommend prompting! I can try and channel the responses easier with a bit more direction, maybe?

when i tell you that we can do this for literal hours and it's some of the most fun i've ever had. the amount of sheer creative energy and enthusiasm that comes from a single one of these conversations is literally greater than from anything else i've ever experienced.

two days ago @knightinpinkunderwear and i watched a movie we hadn't seen before (nuvvostanante nenoddantana) and then we talked for over two hours about the main character from that and the main character from chirutha. and it was so much fun. this is also not to mention this past new year's, when knight and i talked about two of the blorbos from brindavanam and magadheera for... i don't even know how long, but hours and hours definitely. and now BOTH of us are posting fic to ao3 about it.

@pistachioinfernal and i have had hours- (or even days-) long conversations about various blorbos from temper and chirutha and rangasthalam and jai lava kusa.

@ririsasy and a few other people (i think??? pie and atlin and lux???) once spent days talking about what ended up being a MASSIVE crossover between rangasthalam, jai lava kusa, and neevavaro (and also included a 7-person polycule, and devolved into speculation about how they'd procure a mattress big enough for all of them).

seriously. i used to be so simultaneously jealous and intimidated when i'd see posts like this, with people @ ing tons of other people and talking about doing stuff together. or even just in author's notes on ao3, when they'd thank multiple people for helping with their stories. it felt like watching the cool kids playing together, you know?

my hand to the gods up until thirteen months ago i had literally no fandom or tumblr friends AT ALL. and then i watched rrr and somehow worked up the nerve to dm two people on tumblr - @stars-in-the-distance, sweetest person ever, who'd left a comment on my one rrr fic with her url, and @druidfox, who i had the gall to actually speak to unprompted - and they invited me to the discords, and suddenly i had friends.

the rrr/rrreu/south indian movies fandom(s) are tiny but hopping, especially on discord. if you write fic your hit count won't be high, but your comments- and kudos-to-hits ratio will be enormous. and if you show even the slightest indication that you'd like to talk? pretty much everyone is super friendly.

Bite me if I say I used anything tangentially appropriate. Since I have only my phone, I used Pages from apple, but everything is sooooo sooo shitty if your battery health is under 80%. Oh! And the cloud only deletes the Pages’ App files after a bit they are stored, completely unprompted, so if you have like… an iphone to write and use cloud be vigilant! General Relationship Headcanons - Floyd and Riddle

CW: Canon x Canon shipping (obvs), enemies to lovers but also idiots to lovers (? Its complicated), learning to communicate and some very touch and go parts, Trey Clover's prolonged migraine, Azul and Jade's meddling.

As is mentioned in canon, Riddle and Floyd first met during their orientation. Floyd was kicking up a fuss and well... Riddle kicked his ass. There was no two ways about it, he threw Floyd around like he was a bag of grapes before collaring him and he was pretty thoroughly outmatched by his magic.

Riddle unknowingly created a torment of his own making that day. See, Floyd has always really admired strength and, fortunately or unfortunately, Floyd was fascinated by him. He was so small and regal looking that Floyd would have never guessed that he was capable of magic that strong. He wants to see more-- wants to learn what makes Riddle tick and how he got so strong.

That means, while Riddle sees Floyd's pestering in a negative light (which is 100% valid, Floyd is really irritating and intentionally pisses him off) Floyd never has. His teasing and rough play are pretty common types of affection under the sea. Floyd has been just as abrasive toward Azul and Jade in the past, they just know better than to rise to meet his energy.

However, Riddle's reactiveness... feeds into Floyd's bad behavior. He becomes Goldfishie entirely because when Floyd says it, Riddle gives him attention, even if it's negative attention. He doesn't really examine his own emotions beyond that, he just knows that he really likes when his Goldfishie friend pays attention to him.

Now, as for how they got together... it was a very complex sort of domino effect, and had things not fallen into place the way they did, Riddle likely wouldn't have ended up dating Floyd.

So, the first thing that really occurred was that Floyd developed a crush on Riddle..... that he wasn't aware about. Floyd has such a hard time untangling his own emotions that sometimes things slip under the radar. He's always been this way about crushes, and because of it, he tends to be the last person to notice it. Instead, usually the first person to catch on is Jade, and then shortly after him, Azul.

It doesn't take much for Jade to realize it-- he recognizes the signs as soon as Floyd starts going out of his way to seek out Riddle. That's always the first, then followed by him noticing Floyd talking about his admiration for Riddle unprompted shortly after. He didn't realize it was serious though, until Floyd would start to slip up and call him Riddle. Just Riddle. While it wasn't even significant enough for it to be something Riddle noticed, Jade caught it immediately. Fish pun names were common, but actually sticking it through to learn and use someone's given name was less so.

Jade picked up on it right around their sophomore year, and he would take a few occasions to get a temperature read on how Riddle was feeling about his brother. He certainly was probing when he asked Riddle if he actually missed being teased by Floyd.

Needless to say, Jade's impression of Riddle's feelings... aren't hopeful. He can tell that Riddle really, truly resents him for the teasing and how volatile his mood is. He doesn't believe he will be heard out if he's the one to bring it up to Riddle, either, as he knows Riddle already sees him in a similar light as he does Floyd so he defers to Azul and asks him to assist in the situation.

Azul asks for a private meeting with Riddle, and when Riddle arrives he really wastes no time in laying things out as they were from his perspective: Floyd had developed feelings for Riddle and despite how much of a pest he could be, Azul wanted to request that Riddle go easy on him when he let him down.

Riddle was baffled. He can already feel the heat rising to his face as he feels his anger starting to flare. How dare Azul ask to meet him privately for this foolishness! It was such a waste of time to play these silly little games, and Riddle suddenly felt stupid for assuming that Azul would know better than to play these kind of jokes simply on the merits of being another housewarden.

"Really, Azul, this isn't funny." His expression is sour, and he stands smoothing his uniform jacket. Azul's eyes widen a fraction as he looks at him, eyebrows giving away his surprise. "I had expected better of you. I'm sure you think this is hilarious, but I never would have thought that you would stoop so low as to make a joke that I could see Floyd pulling."

He turns on his heels, and only makes it so far as the door when he hears the scrambling of Azul behind him as he stands from his desk.

"Riddle, hold on. This isn't a joke." Riddle freezes, hand lingering on the doorknob. He wants to be angry at himself for thinking that Azul sounds genuine. This is surely an elaborate scheme of some kind, but in spite of himself he turns enough to level Azul with a glare.

Except Azul looks sincere. Perhaps even worried-- like he's the one who couldn't believe this was a joke. Was it a joke? Riddle's suddenly unsure-- Azul didn't usually get roped into helping Jade and Floyd in their impulsive ideas.

"I'm being serious. I'm fairly certain that Floyd... has feelings for you." Azul clears his throat, adjusting his glasses with a careful coolness that seems to be an attempt to cover his prior unveiled concern. "I know that he has been nothing but irritating to you, and that you don't owe him any kindness after the amount of pestering he's done... however, dorm leader to dorm leader, I would like to request that you don't reject him too... intensely."

There's something there-- Riddle can tell. A genuine concern of some kind, even if he can't quite see what exactly for. He gives Azul a skeptical look, knowing it was unlikely for him to play all of his cards at once, though. There has to be something else-- he knows Azul well enough to know that much.

"Forgive me if I'm having a hard time believing that Floyd has a crush on me, Azul." He deadpans, frowning.

Azul mirrors the frown, dragging a hand down his face.

"Perhaps... there's been a misunderstanding of sorts. I know Floyd, and I have known him for years. I realize how counterintuitive this sounds, but the name calling and the encouraging you to play tag with him by taking your things, that's... that's his love language."

"That's his what?"

"Floyd isn't great at understanding his own emotions, let alone anyone else's. I'm afraid if you don't make your intentions incredibly, forcefully clear for him it can sometimes go over his head. He likely thinks that you're just as excited to play along with his games as he is."

"So his idea of flirting with me is to tease me and consistently disrespect me?" Riddle's lips pull into a thin, irritated line. He's starting to tip back in the direction that this is some kind of long-winded, cruel prank.

"Teasing, yes, but I'm afraid I can't say I agree on the disrespect front."

"You're joking."

"I'm not. Floyd respects you highly, even if he's not very adept at showing it."

Riddle can't help but to scoff. Azul rolls his own eyes, holding up his hand and beginning to count.

"Let's see, he talks about how you 'picked the biggest magic textbook off the shelf with tons of hard words' to study and then took a few minutes to explain it to him, how you're 'super dedicated and responsible for your dorm leader stuff', how 'Goldfishie broke up a fight with ten people like it was nothing', how 'Goldfishie threw him around like he weighed nothing with his magic and he wants to learn that too', how you're 'the only one around here who isn't afraid to stand up' to him, how--"

As the list grows longer, Riddle can feel himself growing red again, though this time he's pretty sure it's not from anger. Somehow despite the fact that Azul is surely paraphrasing, it's very easy to hear Floyd's voice saying these things. Hell, Riddle had often been too annoyed to realize it at the time, but he had said a lot of similar things to him directly.

"I see." Is all that Riddle can manage to think up to respond with. "You've certainly given me plenty to think about. Now... if you'll excuse me."

Riddle opens the door and slips out, and Azul stands a little dumbfounded for a moment. What kind of response was that??

"Riddle?" Azul calls after him, following. However, he finds the hallway empty when he walks out. "Riddle!"

But Riddle has already gone, and Azul can only hope that he hadn't just accidentally endorsed Floyd's misery for however long it took him to overcome the hump of realizing his Goldfishie didn't like him in the same way that Floyd liked him.

Riddle spends a while flipping back and forth between whether he thinks that Azul must be using this as some sort of plot and whether he genuinely believes that Floyd has feelings for him. He's more inclined to believe that Floyd genuinely has feelings for him, but he can't be sure if that's just him wanting to give Azul the benefit of the doubt that he wouldn't toy with his own feelings. (He wouldn't, but this is not about that.)

It was... strained on Riddle's part. He is pretty emotionally constipated in his own right, and him reexamining and recontextualizing the past interactions he has had with Floyd through the realization that he was largely just trying to instigate play with him sort of changes his feelings toward them. Of course, he still really, really dislikes the teasing and intentional irritation, but, as he realizes, it might be partially his own fault. He realizes that while Floyd gets on his nerves, he has never continued to do something after Riddle outright asked him not to do it or was explicitly clear that he didn't want him to do it.

Eventually he realizes that what Azul said made an unfortunate amount of sense, and that perhaps his irritation with Floyd was a matter of learning how to communicate with him instead of the both of them just being incompatible as people.

Now a big key to how the next step played out was that Riddle was aware of Floyd's feelings, but Floyd had no idea of his own feelings. Of course he did have romantic feelings toward Riddle, but he never clocked that he was catching feelings.

The situation ended up being that Floyd was irritating Riddle, as he did often, but it went differently than it usually did. To start with, Riddle was the one who got physical with him first-- he used his magic to throw him once again. He had been pushed to his absolute limit and was finding it hard to sleep because the thought of Floyd having a crush on him had been eating him. It definitely doesn't help that Riddle's starting to notice his own signs of attraction. Floyd was a little shocked, because to him he hadn't done anything to warrant it and he wanted Riddle to apologize, but before he could even open his mouth to say as such, Riddle was already starting to talk right over him.

"You are insufferable." Riddle says it, and it makes something in Floyd's chest tighten up when he does. His eyes widen a little, and he's starting to wonder what he did differently today to warrant that severe look in Riddle's eyes.

"Goldfishie?"

"Shut up and listen." Floyd would normally never let anyone talk to him like that, but something in Riddle's tone makes him actually shut his mouth. It feels serious. He watches, waiting for Riddle to continue. "I really hate it when you do this. Make me chase you around by stealing my things. And I hate it when you seek me out just to interrupt what I'm trying to do. I want you to knock it off."

There's no room for argument in his tone. So Floyd doesn't. Really, he wishes Riddle had said as much sooner, because this isn't something fresh and he can tell. And Riddle isn't even going red in the face-- this is a cold anger. Floyd has never seen anything like it and it's terrifying.

"Goldfishie...?" His voice is uncomfortably unsure.

"And stop calling me that. I hate that nickname." His tone is measured, and he steps forward, further into Floyd's space so that he has to look up at him. Floyd's stomach flips, and he doesn't know why. "Do you understand?"

"Yes." Floyd swallows around his heart in his throat. Riddle looks at him, and he realizes he's waiting on Floyd to speak his peace. He isn't sure what to say, so he settles on the words he first finds. "I didn't mean to make you actually mad, Riddle."

And something about Floyd saying his actual name makes Riddle snap. All of his composure is thrown right out of the window, and in spite of the anger and confusion he is feeling, he hauls Floyd up by the collar and kisses him soundly.

And Floyd is stunned. His thoughts become loud and chaotic in an instant-- Why was Riddle kissing him? Hadn't he just told him he hated everything he did? What had made him even think of kissing him? And why did it feel so good?

He doesn't have enough time to respond, body stiff and feeling heavy. He feels a bit like he's going to die with how much his chest feels like it wants to burst, and his stomach can't decide which way is up. And as if that all wasn't bad enough, Floyd can feel this strange hot, burning feeling in his face that's making his cheeks hurt. Riddle pulls back from the kiss, and it's all Floyd can do to just stare at him for several seconds.

And then instinct kicks in. Floyd's head is empty of thoughts as he scrambles to his feet, and he turns, and he flees. Eels are cowards, after all.

Riddle is pretty shocked at himself, too. He isn't sure what came over him-- he'd just felt kind of overwhelmed by the urge to just kiss him in the moment when to any reasonable person that should have been the last thing on his mind. Not to mention that it was a rather public venue where their little spat (?) had taken place, so the school was abuzz with the rumor within the hour.

"So... clearly you have feelings for him as well, then."

He's greeted by Trey a couple of hours later when he more-or-less breaks into his room with a "You did WHAT!?" It takes some explaining, but Trey gets a quick grasp on the situation and immediately lets out the biggest sigh and starts feeling a headache coming on.

"Huh?!" Riddle spits, flushing and looking a little offended. Trey does his best not to level him with his 'are you fucking serious' look, but he must not be entirely successful because Riddle seems to wince a little.

"Riddle, you kissed him. Even if it was on impulse you were having some kind of feelings."

"... I conceed that much."

"So, you probably still have some kind of feelings toward him. What are they?"

"... I feel like I shouldn't answer that on the grounds that you will ask me what's wrong with me, again."

Oh yeah, that headache was really coming on.

"First, I didn't ask what was wrong with you, I asked what you did. Second, I'm doing this to try and help you."

It takes a long conversation, but Riddle eventually lands on the fact that he does have some interest in Floyd. He suspects it might be romantic, but he can't put his finger on it, and doesn't think he would feasibly be able to unless he were to actually sit and be in Floyd's presence voluntarily for a while.

Jade and Azul assumed that Riddle had just rejected Floyd, and that's why he'd been in his room and moping for the last several hours. It takes Trey reaching out to them to talk about what happened for them to realize that it hadn't gone exactly how they had thought it had, and their response was more or less the same as Trey. "What did you DO!?"

Riddle learns from the two of them that Floyd likely needs the time to come to peace with his own feelings on his own time, and that he will need space to do that, so he stays back for the time being.

Meanwhile, Floyd is mulling over the entire scenario and doing his own consideration of their past conversations and realizing that yeah, he'd definitely kind of had a massive crush on Riddle without even knowing he had and that's why he'd gotten so flustered and unsettled when Riddle had kissed him out of nowhere. Well, that and because it had immediately been preceded by a verbal and physical lashing.

As much as I wish it was more interesting, the honest reaction of the people around them in both dorms was... shock. They would never have expected their typically antagonistic relationship to shake out like that, nor did they expect Floyd nor Riddle to be hit so hard by what happened. The only slightly interesting reaction would have been Ace who was likely prepared to tease the both of them until Trey made a few not-so-thinly veiled threats to his wellbeing if he did.

Riddle lets Floyd be the one to make the next move-- after all he'd kind of made a jackass out of himself by jerking Floyd in several different directions with that kiss. And eventually, Floyd does reach out again, though not in his typical fashion-- he sends a letter via Jade asking to meet.

It's definitely awkward when they meet up in person again, and Floyd seems very low and sober. Truthfully, he doesn't want to be having this conversation because he knows it's probably not going to end in a good way, but he also knows that he's probably going to just remain in his rut unless he does. Plus it was getting very annoying having Jade and Azul constantly on his back to do something.

They both end up apologizing to each other. Riddle for being so harsh and then just kissing him out of the blue, and Floyd for not keying into the fact that he was getting genuinely irritated with him. Floyd explains that he's really not good at picking up on subtle cues and he often needs to be told things directly or he will miss them entirely.

"One other thing..." Riddle huffs, glancing away from Floyd. "I suppose if you must, you may still call me goldfish. Just... try not to refer to me exclusively as that."

Floyd laughs-- not the normal bright, manic laughter Riddle usually hears from him. This is a more subdued contentment, and when he looks at him, Riddle notices the way that the corners of Floyd's eyes wrinkle a bit.

"Why did you change your mind on that?"

"Against my better judgements... it seems to me that it's a kind of endearment."

"Nah, I was definitely teasing you when I said it, but whatever you'd like, Goldfishie~." Floyd sing-songs.

Riddle feels stupid for it, considering what had ended them up in this situation in the first place, but he feels overwhelmed with the urge to kiss him again. He tamps it down rather aggressively, not wanting to damage whatever tentative thing they were working on here. Apparently he's not subtle enough, because in the instant he glances at Floyd's lips and back, the other is grinning toothily.

"You didn't learn your lesson the first time, did you?" Floyd challenges. Riddle can't quite place if it's intentional flirting or not-- feels like it must be.

"Perhaps you'll have to teach me again." The words leave Riddle's mouth before he can stop himself long enough to process what he's said. Then, rather flustered, he adds: "I've always found it most helpful to review the material a few times."

Floyd's eyebrows quirk upward toward his hairline, but he doesn't make to move at all. Ah, right, like they'd discussed-- he was trying to be better about their boundaries. Riddle sighed, despite this being something he specifically asked for.

"Floyd?"

"Yes?"

"Kiss me, you oaf."

"Sure thing, Goldfishie~!"

thinking incredibly earnestly about like why i unironically love bite me (a google slides social media au) as much as i do and why it’s so fucking funny and i think a huge part of it is that it lays bare the process of total decontextualisation that generally is at work within the self-contained world of like, fic in general. like, in many ways most fic is the same fic. i think we can generally agree on this. obviously there are like fics that transform the way you view the source text, or fics that generate their own world and fandom (down to agincourt), or fics with profound complex thematic engagement (so says the sword) or fics that have their own specific cult status (my immortal, twist and shout). but like the reason the fic ecosystem chugs along, the reason bajillions of fics are posted to ao3 every day, is because of the kind of fic that is so clearly based off other fic, maybe just shifted 2 degrees to the left.

like fanfiction IS by and large a repetitive medium that is often primarily interested in working off and re-articulating very widely accepted tropes. think of all the largely identical 15x20 fix-it codas you may have read. or this harry potter au i wrote when i was fourteen years old that could not have ANYTHING less to do with the actual characters dean, cas, or charlie as written in-show, or even like, anything to do with hogwarts as a setting. there was NO reason it needed to be a harry potter au. why the hell were the x-men there? there was no characterisation. the presence of potions homework, and gryffindor dean, and “charlie ships it,” were all just empty signifiers towards a narrative that i knew better from reading other fics than from watching the show itself. actually, i think at this point i hadn’t even watched any charlie episodes, but you wouldn’t be able to tell! because i lifted my concept of charlie wholesale from other fics that asserted that this was her “characterisation” and her place in the story. like it Was a 1600-word exercise in copy-paste, which is what large amounts of fanfiction are and historically have been. and is so fundamental to why we keep coming back to them

and i’m not saying this as like. a normative or “judgmental” statement in any way! i think there’s no point in insisting that all fic be like. deeply grounded in discrete characterisation or a sincere engagement with the complex themes of the original text, or whatever. firstly because a) most people writing fic ARE young teens/young adults who do so as a kind of participatory gesture, a low-effort way to signal their earnest investment in a particular ship or imagined narrative, and b) decontextualisation is like… at the beating heart of what fanfiction is. like most fanfiction is not “literary” (in huge skeptical quotes bc of how contested that very term even is) but it also feels like it’s a mistake to… ask it to be? i’m thinking along the lines of this post, where gothhabiba asks that we “articulate an actual theory of how and why fanfiction is created, its relationship to other kinds of media and writing, and what it does for the people who write and read it,” rather than “arguing about whether or not it’s ‘good’” . because that is truly a moot point!

i think as most of us return for the renaissance, some 6-7 years older, we’re now at the point where we’re able to engage (more) critically with the substantive text of the show, the actual themes it engages and (mis)handles, the cultural context in which it was produced, the texts it builds off of, intentionally or unintentionally, and the critical frameworks we can apply to it. and all of that is like overall a very good and interesting thing!! but it’s also so interesting when paired alongside the decontextualising impulse that drives a LOT of fandom engagement

ANYWAYS. all this to say that like 95% percent of the joy of bite me is how unapologetically ooc it is. like this is the continuous thing i’ve been talking about other people with. you could copy-paste any characters from any broadly popular media into this situation and the characterisation/speech would be no more or less jarring; it would still make the same amount of “sense” from an in-universe perspective. nothing about this au is really about dean and cas so much as it’s about decontextualised figures LABELLED dean and cas (and again, this is not some literary condemnation or smth, the majority of fic does this in some way! i’m just using bite me as an example). we are told to believe that sam winchester, a grown white man & published author, says “yall wildin” unprompted and that kaia nieves tweets things like “oomf famoose” and it’s fucking hilarious. it’s so good. because intentionally or not, it DOES reveal how much of fic, as a genre, is utterly separated from the characters they propose to be telling a story about.

i said earlier today that bite me is a social media au written in a riverdalian fashion, and i don’t just mean that in a general “it’s bad but good but outrageous” way, but more specifically that both bite me and riverdale decide on something objectively absurd and instead of shying away from it or trying to cover up the writer’s lack of knowledge, it faces it head on. like we ARE told unapologetically and continuously that actors live in their trailers when they’re filming a movie, that a hashtag trending for one day is enough to get a magazine writer that hasn’t been accused of sexual misconduct fired, that dean and cas are starring in a gay romantic comedy called fucking trainspotting. and the writer doesn’t/won’t/shouldn’t apologise for a word of that. in the same way that riverdale will look you dead in the eye and say “archie is going to war and world war ii-era combat aesthetics never ended even though it’s 2020” or “jughead got into the iowa writer’s workshop despite never having been an undergrad” and like what are you supposed to do? make fun of it?? the text doesn’t CARE if you make fun of it! it’s light years ahead of you! it’s so totally unconcerned with this “realism” you’re supposedly chasing that the joke doubles back on you.

so like tldr: bite me is emblematic of the decontextualising urge at the heart of your average fanfiction, lays bare its own ridiculousness, and raises genuinely fascinating questions abt what fanfiction as a text is meant to be or do. also kaia and claire fall in love on stan twt.
