Day 25: Favourite fanfic, fanart, or fan-related work (Part 1)

I can’t pick just one, so I am doing two rec lists.  One rec per author.  Lister / Rimmer unless otherwise stated.

This isn’t supposed to be any kind of definitive list, just some personal favourites.  Merry Christmas!

@lord-valery-mimes - “Coitus Interruptus” (M).  Lister and Rimmer get cockblocked by Talkie Toaster.  I said what I said.  Hilarious.

@veronica-rich - “Therapy” (E).  Several years before Snacky, this writer anticipated Doug by having Rimmer get therapy.

RoseCathy - “In My Eyes” (G).  Yes, I said G. ;)  An AU where shy, awkward optician Arnold Rimmer nurses a hopeless - or is it? - crush on his charming young assistant Dave Lister and can’t get up the nerve to ask him out.  Help comes from a most unlikely source…

This is, quite simply, adorable fluff of the fluffiest kind.  Heartwarming.

@cazflibs - “The Morning After” (M).  Hilarious crack where Lister wakes up after drunkenly celebrating his birthday to find he ended up partying with a bevy of recent Red Dwarf guest characters.

Kronette - “Back To Life” (E).  Ace and an alternate version of Lister play Cupid for “Back To Earth” era Lister and Rimmer.

Gingertime (Attheborder) - “The High Road Is Hard To Find” (T).  Technically Lister / Kochanski but mostly gen.  Sadly unfinished, but it’s so good I’m reccing it anyway.  Author summary - It’s Kochanski’s turn to be the hero.

Queen_Fiend (pau22) - “A Record Of My Life As A Human, By Kryten 2X4B 523P” (T).  Kryten’s journal whilst briefly human during “DNA”.  He struggles with his newly human feelings for Lister and a jealous Rimmer.  Yes, a Lister / Kryten fic but it’s human Kryten experiencing one-sided feelings for Lister.  Clarifying that in the hope that this fic will get more readers as it really deserves them.

@downonthepharm-red-dwarf - “Buzz”. Hilarious crack involving a talking vibrator.  Yes, really.

Tunglo - “Ship’s Summer” (E).  Author summary - Rimmer gets what he's always wanted. But it's Rimmer, so of course it isn't that simple. 

Horselizard - “All In The Mind” (E).  Author summary - There comes a time in every Red Dwarf slash writer's career when they must write a Terrorform fic. ;) Porn without plot... almost.  Smoking hot.

Lister's Jacket - just_a_dapper_fellow

Lister leaves his signature leather jacket out on the table in the bunkroom and when he leaves the room, Rimmer decides to put the jacket on. When he does, he realizes a whole lot of feelings that he didn't know were stirring inside of him and he realizes just how much he wants to be in Lister's embrace. Unfortunately, Rimmer can't just tell Lister that outright, Lister has to figure it out for himself.

Hold Me? - just_a_dapper_fellow

While spending the night in their "cells" after meeting Legion, Rimmer gets overwhelmed by his new hard-light status, and scared of losing it and being alone, he seeks out Lister to simply hold him and keep him from drifting away.

Spiders - commanderwoobie

Lister convinces Rimmer to come with him to the little haunted house Hollister approved. Rimmer doesn't fare too well.

Rimmer has a sentimental streak he keeps hidden as well as he has kept Lister’s gifts over the years.

There's an intruder who's crawled into Lister's bed while he was sleeping, giving him a him a hell of a fright. Who it turns out to be, however, is the most disturbing part of all.

When Rimmer struggles with another attempt at the astro-navs, Lister decides to ask him if he's doing ok. This makes the poor hologram shatter. Luckily, Lister is right there to pick up the pieces and hold the broken man together.

It's quite a long fic (and it's still in progress) but OH MY GOD IT IS SO WORTH IT

Do you like Cats, canon compliant repair shop AU's, general cosiness and EXTREME slow burn??? Cause oh boy this fic is ALL THAT AND MORE

Genuinely, I sat down and read all of it in one sitting because this stuff is SO GOOD

Lister is genuinely the most oblivious fool in all of it and GOD is it frustratingly excellent /pos

I really recommend it because it is soso good and probably my favourite long fic ever, HungLikeARainbro writes them and the setting SO well, teach me your ways (also I have a feeling that you might have a Tumblr account but I CANNOT remember i am so sorry, i would be tagging you properly here if i could remember)

Okay this one is fun so here we go! Number one is pretty much set in stone, while 2 to 9 are just in the order they come to me AND are in the fandoms I've been enagged with in recent years, because I move fandoms a lot. Let's say that if I happened to be stranded somewhere with no Internet these are the fics I would like to have with me, at this moment.

desynchronization by Ontogenesis (hikaru no go, Ogata/Sei) It has: an amnesiac displaced out of time who was formerly a ghost and lots of relationship drama. I reread this pretty much every year. One of my favorite things about this is that while it is written in english, the characters' dialogues flow AS IF THEY WERE IN JAPANESE, and I can hear they actually say these senteces. Which to me is an amazing feat.

Game of Stacks by CommaSplice (GoT, multiple ships). Such a well-thought modern AU is hard to come by.

if living can be this by Lise (MDZS, songxuexiao). My fave Yi City redemption fic. Lise is one of my all time fave authors becuase of the excellent characterizaiton and dialogue; I orignally got hooked by their Steve/Loki works in Marvel fandom, which are also amazing.

This Side of Rain by Erinye (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, squarejohn). I love this one for making me see the benefits of unlinear narrative, and what has to be one of the most agonizingly equisite description of pining in fiction.

Unwilling Sleep by Telanu (this author also has other pseodonyms but I don't remember them off the bat (Petshop of Horrors, Leon/Count D) It has: an immortal character becoming mortal, and all it entails.

Listerworld by Kahvi, Roadstergal (Red Dwarf, LIster/Rimmer). One of the most unique plots I've read, befitting the uniqueness of the source material. Also, pining.

The Most Important Thing by NorthenSparrow (Supernatural, destiel). All of their destiel works are amazing but this one has amnesia, which is one of my favorite tropes so ^^

Wizardry By Consent by Sixthlight (Rivers of London, Peter/Nightingale). I love all of this author's works in the fandom, amazing writing.

Не в нашей власти by Ликующий Октаэдр. (SVSSS, bingjiu) This fic is a bit longer than my preferred fic length, which is up to 200k words and moreover still ongoing, but manages to keep the (extremely well crafted) story interesting. Amazing bingjiu interactions.

Дождь и Ветер by Eswet (Nirvana in Fire, Prince Yu/Mei Changsu). A great redemption fic for my favorite evil prince and some proper food to ease the hunger for my favorite rarepair (71 works on AO3 including two paltry attempts of my own T_T) Honorable mentions go to many fics by esama in Hikaru no Go and Harry Potter fandoms out of which I cannot pick a single one, bingjiu fics by xpityx, The Lotus Eaters by aldora 89 (Kirk/Spock). oh wait and also A bit of Fragnance by Silvercistern (now orphaned because the author got harassed by f***ing antis in a different fandom), which is a great arranged marriage AU for Quan Yizhen/Yin Yu (TGCF). And --- I MUST HIT SEND ALREADY BECAUSE I COULD GO ON FOR HOURS TRUST ME (Oh wait you also asked about my nickname, so just a short explanation - Kasasagi means magpie in Japanese and it is how my writing works - I steal the shiny bits of everything I see (and read) and put them together.)

Softlightpen - “Correction” (E).  This one really earns its E rating as Low Rimmer and Sebastian Doyle get it on.  Steamy.

@ohhhyestottytottytotty - “Hop, Skip And A Jump” (E).  Sham-glam Lister from “Timeslides” meets a “The Beginning” era Rimmer.  Sex ensues.

Lauren (Laurenthemself) - “Quick Fix” (E).  Author summary - An alternative method of escaping the psi-moon during 'Terrorform'. PWP.  I also recommend the sequel which is a “fix-it”.

Kahvi & Roadsterguy - “Standards” (E).  I can’t not include these two who’ve written a vast amount of L/R fic.�� Authors’ summary - Yet another supply raid on a derelict leads Rimmer and Lister to an argument, which in turn leads to... something that's still fairly close to an argument. You get lonely in space, but you do have standards.

Janed - “Passion Pod” (E).  Author summary - AU.  Sex pollen!  Yes, one of Red Dwarf’s few sex pollen fics which is sufficient recommendation in itself but it also captures Series 1 Lister and Rimmer’s relationship really well.

@arcanemoody - “Everyone Is Wrong Here” (M).  Author summary - Post “Demons & Angels”.  Lister thinks (and dreams) about what he saw on the Lows’ ship.

Diminua - “Dream Lover” (E).  Remix / sequel to the above fic.  Rimmer finds out.

SugarCrystal - “The Boyfriend You’ve Always Wanted” (M).  Author summary - Fill for Red Dwarf Kink Meme on Livejournal. Prompt was: "Lister/Rimmer. Anything with either Rimmer or Lister seeing the other when faced with a Psiren or Pleasure GELF and the others finding out. Humour please!"

@feline-ranger “Rimmer’s Report” (Not Rated).  Lister / Rimmer and Lister / Todhunter.  Pre-accident fic.  Rimmer realises that Todhunter has feelings for Lister and his own repressed desire comes spilling out in a hilariously revealing rant.

This was interesting, because I had to go with my gut feeling in the moment, but I reckon the contents of this list could easily change at any given time depending on my mood.

1) Revival

Summary: Loki and Mobius take what amounts to a vacation, whilst Loki recovers from his harrowing experience of babysitting the multiverse.

This began as a single-chapter ficlet to fill an ask game prompt. Later, I decided to revisit this version of Loki and Mobius to fill a bingo prompt in ch 2, then a random computer-generated prompt I had in my ideas doc for a 3rd and final chapter. Apart from a little Loki-whump in ch 2, it’s generally a sweet, soft and cozy pre-romance, and very cathartic to write.

2) Within

Summary: Loki and Mobius are marooned on a volcanic nightmare of a world, their survival depending solely on Loki's tenacity.

Part of my ‘Patience-verse’ series, this fic contains some of my favourite tropes, such as ‘trapped together in danger’, ‘magical drain/depletion’ and ‘the power of love’. Also a little twist of UST/URT — gummy bear feeding, my beloved! 😆

3) Sleepless

Summary: Mobius and Loki get stuck in a broken elevator for hours, and as a result Mobius discovers what's been bothering the object of his (as yet unspoken) affection.

Also a part of ‘Patience-verse’, and it’s such a trope-y scenario, you’ve gotta love it. I mean, that was the whole point of the original fic that spawned this series, after all. Basically, my reason for choosing this is not just because I’m absolutely feral for exhausted!Loki and sleepy cuddles, but also because I can’t believe I was able to write 3k+ words about Lokius in a lift. 🤷‍♀️

4) Apokruptein

Summary: A curiosity on an unknown world hurtles Loki and Mobius into peril.

A double bingo prompt-fill for ‘Forest’ and ‘Cursed object/artefact’. This 4-chapter fic is not really my best writing, but it’s the only time so far I’ve gone all-out with a full on adventure style fic, with a little worldbuilding/backstory, a lot of whump, and the lovely trope ‘temporary amnesia’ to boot. I worked really hard on the conception of this one, and I’m pretty proud of it.

5) I’ve lumped together two ficlets for my #5 spot, because they’re both similar in that they are absolutely NOT anything near what I would usually write.

a) Sit Tempus

Summary: Furnishing their new apartment, the last thing on Loki and Mobius’ list is a decent couch.

An idea that popped into my head during a boring drive home… and I wrote, edited and posted the whole thing in one night. 😏 My only ‘established relationship’ fic to date (watch this space.. 👀), although nothing remotely spicy, I should add. Just pure cute fluff, and a very vague S2 fix-it.

b) Unexpectedly You

Summary: A kindness from Loki for a mutual friend causes Mobius to have a ‘Moment’.

Terrible summary, but it’s another little ask game prompt fill, so nothing much happens in it at all. A lot of people seemed to like this one, which kinda made me like it more too. 🤣 It’s simply Loki being a sweetheart, and Mobius being proud of him. 🥹

I also wanted to add two honourable mentions for Reach (Loki/Star Wars crossover) and Reset (Loki/Red Dwarf crossover). I never in a million years thought I’d be capable of writing ONE passable crossover fic, let alone two… so the fact I managed it makes me super proud, even if they’re ludicrously niche.

Jason feels the tension fall completely out of his shoulders. Babyest bird is not feeling unsafe, right now; Tim doesn’t get this bitchy around people unless he trusts them. Random civilians and corporate fuckwits, they get soft-spoken, laughing Timothy Drake. Anyone Tim’s not quite comfortable with-- people he has to impress, like the Justice League-- get the world’s most perfect and efficient Robin. Seriously, it’s terrifying. He wears his competency like a sword and doesn’t bother with a shield. So, a snarky Tim-- a Tim who lashes out, without regard for if he’ll be hit back-- is a trusting Tim. A comfortable Tim.

Tim's missing spleen comes back to haunt him, and Jason is the only Bat and Family Member available to deal with the problem. There are some realizations, and Tam is just so do with these idiots.

Marlboro Reds and Birthday Wishes by crowclxb - Rated T

Tim can't ever remember the quotes he thinks describe his feelings. Also, everyone forgot his birthday. Not Jason, though. Tim just doesn't know that.

Swaddled in Warmth During Cold Times by melennui (orphan_account) - Rated G

Tim is chilly in the manor, but it's summer and it shouldn't be cold. To remedy this, he makes a hammock and gains a nice moment with his brother too.

The better, upgraded version of him; the newer, the shinier, the better version. The kid Bruce wanted Jason to be. The Robin Bruce really wanted. Timothy Jackson Drake.

my notes: i really loved this - both cullen and solas are written incredibly well. it's hot, nuanced, and feels so true to both of them and how they could come together meaningfully

my notes: jazz is an extraordinary writer and they managed to get everyone's voices down so, so well. this is a compelling look at what happens after the events of da2, with all the inherent complexity intact

my notes: okay, i am head over heels with how everyone is written here. solas' characterization is perfect, and both andruil and ghilan'nain are utterly fascinating - as individuals, in their dynamic with each other, and in the way they interact with solas in this. it's hot and messy, mind the tags, and a wonderful examination of arlathan's culture

This seems to startle him enough that he turns to look at Varric. In the dimness of the tent his eyes reflect the light from the fire outside, like a wild animal.

“I would call us that, yes."

“Then won’t you share whatever burden is pressing you down with me? That’s what friends are for, you know.”

“Not this one." Varric sighs.

“Come on, Chuckles. I’ll get back out there and get the Inquisitor to spill it, but it seems like a waste when I’m already here.”

Solas is quiet for a long moment—he has shifted around again, so Varric can only see the rise and fall of his back as he breathes, carefully controlled.

“I am… compromised,” he says. Varric waits. “That damned plant, combined with an errant spell—I have… urges. And I can’t—it is—” He cuts himself off, frustrated, and isn’t that a wonder, Solas out of words? And then,

“Urges?” Varric stifles a laugh. “Do you mean—”

“You know what I mean, dwarf,” Solas hisses, and Varric realizes that his neck is red and the tips of his ears have gone pink, and that the air in the tent is warm and stuffy and a little heady, all of a sudden. He clears his throat.

my notes: i am, of course, always so thirsty for solas/varric content - the world needs more of it - but also this particular fic is delightful. i love the writing, particularly the way varric describes solas' behavior and staring - i've come back to read this multiple times because it's just... really, really good. also hot!

my notes: love this one soooo much - lavellan is fascinating here and the way she takes charge is delightful, i particularly enjoyed how it began so much earlier than in the bedroom - and solas is written so well, love his characterization here. it's very hot and another i've definitely come back to

my notes: love this one so much - every line is just rife with characterization and depth, absolutely love the way kubide conducts herself and her reactions throughout, the physical descriptions are wonderfully done, and overall it's super hot and makes their feelings for each other incredibly clear.

my notes: this was such a delight when i first read it, and still such a delight when i just reread it now ;o; the way everything is described is really beautiful, and the balance between them, the juicy foreshadowing, everything, it's so good. a soft moment that acknowledges what is to come

my notes: i really, really enjoy this fic - the intimacy alongside the uncertainty is wonderfully complex, and the descriptive language for how they manuever around/with each other has never failed to impress me. love this lavellan too <3
