I can’t pick just one, so I am doing two rec lists.  One rec per author.  Lister / Rimmer unless otherwise stated.

This isn’t supposed to be any kind of definitive list, just some personal favourites.  Merry Christmas!

@lord-valery-mimes - “Coitus Interruptus” (M).  Lister and Rimmer get cockblocked by Talkie Toaster.  I said what I said.  Hilarious.

@veronica-rich - “Therapy” (E).  Several years before Snacky, this writer anticipated Doug by having Rimmer get therapy.

RoseCathy - “In My Eyes” (G).  Yes, I said G. ;)  An AU where shy, awkward optician Arnold Rimmer nurses a hopeless - or is it? - crush on his charming young assistant Dave Lister and can’t get up the nerve to ask him out.  Help comes from a most unlikely source…

This is, quite simply, adorable fluff of the fluffiest kind.  Heartwarming.

@cazflibs - “The Morning After” (M).  Hilarious crack where Lister wakes up after drunkenly celebrating his birthday to find he ended up partying with a bevy of recent Red Dwarf guest characters.

Kronette - “Back To Life” (E).  Ace and an alternate version of Lister play Cupid for “Back To Earth” era Lister and Rimmer.

Gingertime (Attheborder) - “The High Road Is Hard To Find” (T).  Technically Lister / Kochanski but mostly gen.  Sadly unfinished, but it’s so good I’m reccing it anyway.  Author summary - It’s Kochanski’s turn to be the hero.

Queen_Fiend (pau22) - “A Record Of My Life As A Human, By Kryten 2X4B 523P” (T).  Kryten’s journal whilst briefly human during “DNA”.  He struggles with his newly human feelings for Lister and a jealous Rimmer.  Yes, a Lister / Kryten fic but it’s human Kryten experiencing one-sided feelings for Lister.  Clarifying that in the hope that this fic will get more readers as it really deserves them.

@downonthepharm-red-dwarf - “Buzz”. Hilarious crack involving a talking vibrator.  Yes, really.

Tunglo - “Ship’s Summer” (E).  Author summary - Rimmer gets what he's always wanted. But it's Rimmer, so of course it isn't that simple. 

Horselizard - “All In The Mind” (E).  Author summary - There comes a time in every Red Dwarf slash writer's career when they must write a Terrorform fic. ;) Porn without plot... almost.  Smoking hot.

Red Dwarf but Regency. Do I need to say more? The writing, the speech, the mannerisms. All absolutely in character but historically accurate. Beautiful.

Rimmer is a vampire. That is all I need to say. Plus you know, it was written by one of my favourite authors so you know I went running as soon as I found out about it. Plus there's a sequel.

Fifty Shades of Smeg by @feline-ranger

Let's be honest, you all knew it was coming. Is this my favourite fanfic of all time ever? Yes, yes it is. Have I read it so many times it's almost embarrassing? Also yes. If you were put off by the source material don't be, because this one stands head and shoulders above that by a country mile. The sequel is an absolute stunner as well.

Easy as Anything by Komodobits

The author of this fic needs to get a job on the show, because the understanding of the characters is absolutely stunning, to the point you can actually HEAR them in your head. Again, chuck in some angst, longing, pining and a healthy dose of some outstanding honest to god love scenes and I am there.

Space Corps Directive #1215225 by spreadyovrwings

The first Red Dwarf fanfic I read when I fell back into my hyperfixation, and honestly if it wasn't for this fic I never would have started writing myself. Literally there would be no Persephone if not for this fic. If you like slow burns you'll love it.

Lister leaves his signature leather jacket out on the table in the bunkroom and when he leaves the room, Rimmer decides to put the jacket on. When he does, he realizes a whole lot of feelings that he didn't know were stirring inside of him and he realizes just how much he wants to be in Lister's embrace. Unfortunately, Rimmer can't just tell Lister that outright, Lister has to figure it out for himself.

Hold Me? - just_a_dapper_fellow

While spending the night in their "cells" after meeting Legion, Rimmer gets overwhelmed by his new hard-light status, and scared of losing it and being alone, he seeks out Lister to simply hold him and keep him from drifting away.

Spiders - commanderwoobie

Lister convinces Rimmer to come with him to the little haunted house Hollister approved. Rimmer doesn't fare too well.

Rimmer has a sentimental streak he keeps hidden as well as he has kept Lister’s gifts over the years.

Okay this one is fun so here we go! Number one is pretty much set in stone, while 2 to 9 are just in the order they come to me AND are in the fandoms I've been enagged with in recent years, because I move fandoms a lot. Let's say that if I happened to be stranded somewhere with no Internet these are the fics I would like to have with me, at this moment.

desynchronization by Ontogenesis (hikaru no go, Ogata/Sei) It has: an amnesiac displaced out of time who was formerly a ghost and lots of relationship drama. I reread this pretty much every year. One of my favorite things about this is that while it is written in english, the characters' dialogues flow AS IF THEY WERE IN JAPANESE, and I can hear they actually say these senteces. Which to me is an amazing feat.

Game of Stacks by CommaSplice (GoT, multiple ships). Such a well-thought modern AU is hard to come by.

if living can be this by Lise (MDZS, songxuexiao). My fave Yi City redemption fic. Lise is one of my all time fave authors becuase of the excellent characterizaiton and dialogue; I orignally got hooked by their Steve/Loki works in Marvel fandom, which are also amazing.

This Side of Rain by Erinye (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, squarejohn). I love this one for making me see the benefits of unlinear narrative, and what has to be one of the most agonizingly equisite description of pining in fiction.

Unwilling Sleep by Telanu (this author also has other pseodonyms but I don't remember them off the bat (Petshop of Horrors, Leon/Count D) It has: an immortal character becoming mortal, and all it entails.

Listerworld by Kahvi, Roadstergal (Red Dwarf, LIster/Rimmer). One of the most unique plots I've read, befitting the uniqueness of the source material. Also, pining.

The Most Important Thing by NorthenSparrow (Supernatural, destiel). All of their destiel works are amazing but this one has amnesia, which is one of my favorite tropes so ^^

Wizardry By Consent by Sixthlight (Rivers of London, Peter/Nightingale). I love all of this author's works in the fandom, amazing writing.

Не в нашей власти by Ликующий Октаэдр. (SVSSS, bingjiu) This fic is a bit longer than my preferred fic length, which is up to 200k words and moreover still ongoing, but manages to keep the (extremely well crafted) story interesting. Amazing bingjiu interactions.

Дождь и Ветер by Eswet (Nirvana in Fire, Prince Yu/Mei Changsu). A great redemption fic for my favorite evil prince and some proper food to ease the hunger for my favorite rarepair (71 works on AO3 including two paltry attempts of my own T_T) Honorable mentions go to many fics by esama in Hikaru no Go and Harry Potter fandoms out of which I cannot pick a single one, bingjiu fics by xpityx, The Lotus Eaters by aldora 89 (Kirk/Spock). oh wait and also A bit of Fragnance by Silvercistern (now orphaned because the author got harassed by f***ing antis in a different fandom), which is a great arranged marriage AU for Quan Yizhen/Yin Yu (TGCF). And --- I MUST HIT SEND ALREADY BECAUSE I COULD GO ON FOR HOURS TRUST ME (Oh wait you also asked about my nickname, so just a short explanation - Kasasagi means magpie in Japanese and it is how my writing works - I steal the shiny bits of everything I see (and read) and put them together.)

Janed - “Passion Pod” (E).  Author summary - AU.  Sex pollen!  Yes, one of Red Dwarf’s few sex pollen fics which is sufficient recommendation in itself but it also captures Series 1 Lister and Rimmer’s relationship really well.

@arcanemoody - “Everyone Is Wrong Here” (M).  Author summary - Post “Demons & Angels”.  Lister thinks (and dreams) about what he saw on the Lows’ ship.

Diminua - “Dream Lover” (E).  Remix / sequel to the above fic.  Rimmer finds out.

SugarCrystal - “The Boyfriend You’ve Always Wanted” (M).  Author summary - Fill for Red Dwarf Kink Meme on Livejournal. Prompt was: "Lister/Rimmer. Anything with either Rimmer or Lister seeing the other when faced with a Psiren or Pleasure GELF and the others finding out. Humour please!"

Lemon Doesn't Belong with Coffee and Chocolate (Or Does It?)

For the like 2 people who follow me who have heard of red dwarf.

Sometimes I spend too long thinking about Rimmer and the fact he's a hologram and what that actually means for him (and Lister) physically. So I wanted to make a list of some of my personal hardlight hologram Rimmer

🌟Headcanons🌟

(At least one or two of these things might just be actual canon but I think about them a lot so they're going on the list) 👇

Being made of light, I don't think he produces any sort of notable body heat. Any small amount of heat generated by his light bee doing its thing isn't enough to make him feel warm to anyone else. Though he might feel solid and human to touch, his body would perpetually remain at room temperature.

(Lister loves to cuddle with him, when he can get away with it (which isn't often). He runs hot, especially at night, so having someone constantly room temperature to leech some of his heat helps to keep him cool)

He also can't feel external temperatures at all, unless hot enough to burn, at which point the false pain receptors would kick in and tell him it hurts - though he still wouldn't register heat.

While he might appear to produce certain bodily fluids such as tears or sweat, I think they would simply cease to exist the moment they stopped making contact with his body. For example, a tear might leave a trail down his cheek, but once it drips from his chin, it will never land. (This is convenient for avoiding any potential messes, but still not human)

The above goes for clothing, too. Once removed, his clothing disappears the moment it is no longer making contact with his body. Meaning he also has no need of getting dressed, as his clothes are generated directly onto his body.

(Rimmer forgets simple things to do with dressing himself that he once knew well, like how to tie a tie?)

He has no scent. Everyone produces a subtle, natural scent, but not him. Light doesn't smell of anything.

He can just... casually go without eating or drinking anything? Without ever feeling hunger or thirst? And I think he often would, because even though he is capable of eating, he is NOT capable of digesting. Ew.

When he was first upgraded to hardlight, he spent hours at a time sitting perfectly still and touching nothing because the sensation of physical touch after years was so overwhelming.

Because of the way he has to be patched into TIVGs (show version) they feel way more real to him than to Lister or the Cat, because the sensations are simulated for him in exactly the same way real world sensations are.

This was interesting, because I had to go with my gut feeling in the moment, but I reckon the contents of this list could easily change at any given time depending on my mood.

1) Revival

Summary: Loki and Mobius take what amounts to a vacation, whilst Loki recovers from his harrowing experience of babysitting the multiverse.

This began as a single-chapter ficlet to fill an ask game prompt. Later, I decided to revisit this version of Loki and Mobius to fill a bingo prompt in ch 2, then a random computer-generated prompt I had in my ideas doc for a 3rd and final chapter. Apart from a little Loki-whump in ch 2, it’s generally a sweet, soft and cozy pre-romance, and very cathartic to write.

2) Within

Summary: Loki and Mobius are marooned on a volcanic nightmare of a world, their survival depending solely on Loki's tenacity.

Part of my ‘Patience-verse’ series, this fic contains some of my favourite tropes, such as ‘trapped together in danger’, ‘magical drain/depletion’ and ‘the power of love’. Also a little twist of UST/URT — gummy bear feeding, my beloved! 😆

3) Sleepless

Summary: Mobius and Loki get stuck in a broken elevator for hours, and as a result Mobius discovers what's been bothering the object of his (as yet unspoken) affection.

Also a part of ‘Patience-verse’, and it’s such a trope-y scenario, you’ve gotta love it. I mean, that was the whole point of the original fic that spawned this series, after all. Basically, my reason for choosing this is not just because I’m absolutely feral for exhausted!Loki and sleepy cuddles, but also because I can’t believe I was able to write 3k+ words about Lokius in a lift. 🤷‍♀️

4) Apokruptein

Summary: A curiosity on an unknown world hurtles Loki and Mobius into peril.

A double bingo prompt-fill for ‘Forest’ and ‘Cursed object/artefact’. This 4-chapter fic is not really my best writing, but it’s the only time so far I’ve gone all-out with a full on adventure style fic, with a little worldbuilding/backstory, a lot of whump, and the lovely trope ‘temporary amnesia’ to boot. I worked really hard on the conception of this one, and I’m pretty proud of it.

5) I’ve lumped together two ficlets for my #5 spot, because they’re both similar in that they are absolutely NOT anything near what I would usually write.

a) Sit Tempus

Summary: Furnishing their new apartment, the last thing on Loki and Mobius’ list is a decent couch.

An idea that popped into my head during a boring drive home… and I wrote, edited and posted the whole thing in one night. 😏 My only ‘established relationship’ fic to date (watch this space.. 👀), although nothing remotely spicy, I should add. Just pure cute fluff, and a very vague S2 fix-it.

b) Unexpectedly You

Summary: A kindness from Loki for a mutual friend causes Mobius to have a ‘Moment’.

Terrible summary, but it’s another little ask game prompt fill, so nothing much happens in it at all. A lot of people seemed to like this one, which kinda made me like it more too. 🤣 It’s simply Loki being a sweetheart, and Mobius being proud of him. 🥹

I also wanted to add two honourable mentions for Reach (Loki/Star Wars crossover) and Reset (Loki/Red Dwarf crossover). I never in a million years thought I’d be capable of writing ONE passable crossover fic, let alone two… so the fact I managed it makes me super proud, even if they’re ludicrously niche.

Only a few months into his time on board of Red Dwarf Dave Lister becomes witness to Arnold J Rimmer's bizarre exam preparations. Everyone on the ship tells him to just ignore it, but fearing the Second Technician is in a very bad place Lister can't. Soon it is clear he was right to worry.

Feverish - just_a_dapper_fellow

Rimmer contracts a holovirus but attempts to keep it hidden due to a fear of being locked back up in quarantine. Of course, he only manages to make it on his own for so long before Lister catches him.

Take Care - just_a_dapper_fellow

Rimmer picks up a holovirus on a derelict that gives him a nasty cold, but years of conditioning from his childhood make it hard for him to accept the fact that he needs rest. Luckily, Lister is there to help.

Lovesick - SeparateWaysTogether

Lister's appendix is about to burst. Rimmer sinks into a neurotic spiral of worry for his ageing bunkmate. Who's more sick?
